Pot for Pets

As nine states next month ask voters to approve some form of legalization of marijuana, a “new customer base” for the product — pets — was highlighted in an October New York Times report. Dogs and cats are struck with maladies similar to those that humans report in cannabis success stories: seizures, inflammation, anxiety, arthritis and other pain and subsequent social withdrawals. The “high”-producing THC element cannot be used because it is notoriously toxic to dogs, but other elements in the drug seem to work well not only for dogs and cats but, by anecdotal evidence, pigs, horses and domesticated wild animals.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin declared Oct. 13 Oilfield Prayer Day to cap a statewide initiative of mass wishing for improved performance of the state’s energy industry, which has been in the doldrums recently with the worldwide drop in oil prices. Although the initiative’s founders, and the associated Oil Patch Chaplains, were largely Baptist church leaders, the governor emphasized that all religions should be praying for a more prosperous industry.

Perp With Bad Peepers

In September, Charles Lawrence III, 60, was sentenced to eight years in prison for attempted sexual assault despite his claim that it was just bad eyesight that caused the problem. He had arrived at a house in Fairfield, Conn., to have sex with a male he had met online, but the event turned out to be a To Catch a Predator sting. Lawrence, an accountant, claimed that, in text messages with the “boy,” he had seen “18” as his age, when, according to police evidence, the text read “13.” Lawrence also knew Predator newsman Chris Hansen socially and commuted daily on the train with him, according to Lawrence’s lawyer.

Compelling Explanation

A 23-year-old woman on a bus in Istanbul, Turkey, was attacked by Abdullah Cakiroglu, 35, in September because, as he told police, he had become “aroused” by her wearing shorts. Initially, he was not arrested, but after a protest on social

media, police came to get him — although for “inciting,” not assault. He told police, “I lost myself” because the woman had “disregarded the values of our country,” and “my spiritual side took over, and I kicked her in the face.”

Kevin Jones told Washingtonian magazine that there were no problems in getting gun-shop and firearms-instruction permits from state and federal agencies, but several local-government roadblocks delayed the coffee-sales permit: the property being zoned for “retail” but not food or drinks; permission to open certain businesses near residences; and a coffee shop’s need to have “parking.”

In September, a court in Paris upheld France’s government ban on people smiling for their passport and identity photos. One official had challenged the required straightforward pose (“neutral,” “mouth closed”), lamenting that the French should be encouraged to smile to overcome the perpetual “national depression” that supposedly permeates the country’s psyche. The baseball-like “pesapallo” might be Finland’s national game, reported The New York Times in September, despite its differences from the American pastime. The ball is pitched to the batter — but vertically, by a pitcher standing next to the batter — and the batter runs the bases after hitting it, although not counterclockwise but zigzag style, to a base on the left, then one on the right, then back to the left. The game was invented in Finland in 1920 and has achieved minor notoriety, with teams from Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Australia vying for a “world cup” that so far none has been able to wrest from Finland. Reassuringly, however, “three strikes” is an out in Finland, too.

In an October profile of tech developer and startup savant Sam Altman, The New Yorker disclosed that “many people in Silicon Valley have become obsessed with the simulation hypothesis” — that “what we experience as reality” is just some dark force’s computer simulation, as in the movie The Matrix. “Two tech billionaires,” the magazine reported, are “secretly engag(ing) scientists” to break us out of this alternative universe we might be trapped in. One prominent member of the tech elite remarked at a Vox Media conference in June on how the “simulation hypothesis” seems to dominate all conversation whenever the elites gather.

JACKIE WARRENMOORE: WHERE SHE’S COMING FROM

A

mong the acknowledgements of poems in Jackie Warren-Moore’s new book Where I Come From (Nine Mile Press, $12/softcover) which have also been published elsewhere, two are noted as included in Nikki Giovanni’s The 100 Best African-American Poems. While proud to be in such company, the locally based poet, playwright, theatrical director and teacher, whose work has reached an international audience, does not identify with the distinction. Is there a difference between African-American and Caucasian poetry? “No, they just happen to be written by African-American people,” Warren-Moore says plainly. “My mother used to say, ‘There are no new feelings under the sun, and everybody has the same feelings.’ There are cultural nuances to our poetry, but they’re all about the same feelings. That’s what poetry is about.” Watching her mentor my then pre-teen daughter Lorca as they prepared for a performance at the nation’s Bicentennial Celebration, at which they both read original works, and sensing the drive of a blue flame anger under the calm of melodic control as she recited for the uncaged souls at an Auburn Prison workshop, both reinforce the distinction she draws on the militancy often attributed to her presentations. “Not mean,” she writes calmly, “just very self-assured.”

Jackie Warren-Moore hosts her book release party Friday at ArtRage. Michael Davis photo

And for those anticipating some deep existential meaning behind her new book’s title, her response is all the more literal. “Actually I was born here,” Warren-Moore notes, “but a lot of my younger growing up from age 4 to 12 was in Elmira. When I was 12 we moved back.” She remembers Elmira as a very hard time. “Kind of

country,” she reflects. “I went to Catholic school, the only black student. It was not nice. My father had just been killed in Syracuse by a police officer, who, coincidentally, was black, one of the first black police officers who was also my father’s best friend. He accidentally killed him playing around with his gun. “I started writing out of fear. I didn’t know what to do about all those feelings about my father, being the only black kid in the school, walking from my black neighborhood through the white neighborhood, and I started making up stuff. I wrote poems to the flowers and the cracks in the wall. I had a lot of anger, and the poetry helped me with that. In seventh grade I recited ‘Casey at the Bat,’ and a teacher said I was good. I showed her a couple of poems I had been writing since probably second grade. She encouraged me, and I’ve been writing ever since.” In the 1960s Warren-Moore connected with the Westcott Nation literary scene; her first poem was published in the Nickel Review, the underground newspaper of that time. Since then, she has not had the best of experiences with editors, one of whom told her she couldn’t use the word penis. She says she is cautious in determining whether an editor is capable of sharing her feelings, noting that she made an almost immediate connection with Bob Herz, Nine Mile Press publisher of Where I Come From. And indeed, Warren-Moore maintains, the poems are from Syracuse and Elmira, and a little bit from Oswego, where she went to college. “If you share poetry with someone, you’re open,” she says. “That’s why it’s so special. You connect with people. And they connect with you if they’re open. I can look at an audience and know who’s connecting with me.” Warren-Moore will be checking out an audience for her book release party at ArtRage Gallery, 505 Hawley Ave., on Friday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. Pizza and wine will be available. T

here has been good news and sad news surrounding the Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest in recent weeks. The good news concerns the now-quelled controversy that the 2017 festival will stay put next summer at the Onondaga Community College campus. The sad news is that Oscar L. Peterson Jr., Jazz Fest board president, won’t be around to witness the 35th anniversary edition. Peterson died Oct. 3, eight days short of his 55th birthday. “Oscar was my brother from another mother, and my best friend for the past three decades,” said Jazz Fest founder Frank Malfitano. “On a personal basis, his loss is unfathomable, but his spirit and ever-present smile will stay with me all of the remaining days of my life.” Peterson was best remembered for his 10-year run as Jazz Fest board president, as well as his former gig with WAER-FM 88.3 as the weekly host of his Jazz Express program, which would always open with Peggy Lee’s sultry composition “I Love Being Here With You.” Malfitano’s friendship with Peterson began in the mid-1980s when both collaborated on two Legends of Jazz series at the Mulroy Civic Center. Peterson also served as vice chair for the city of Syracuse’s Republican Party. When Peterson first came to town from Atlanta, the Marine Corps veteran didn’t have to register in a party to be politically active. “I picked up a copy of the Syracuse New Times,” he recalled in a 2015 conversation with writer Walt Shepperd, “and saw Stanley Dean, a person of color, was chair of the Republican City Committee. I had been a Republican for a while, mentally, and when I met him he encouraged me to get involved.” Health issues eventually led to Peterson’s move to a Baldwinsville facility oriented to his mobility challenges. Along the way, the wheelchair-bound Peterson switched political parties and ran as the primary candidate on the Conservative line for the 2015 Onondaga County executive race. “Conservatives have always been closer to my personal beliefs and values,” Peterson said to Shepperd, “and when I went to my last (annual party fundraiser) clambake, I knew I just wasn’t going to be a Republican any more. I filled out a voter registration form and checked Conservative.” Malfitano announced that the 2017 M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest at OCC in 2017 will be officially dedicated to Peterson. “Oscar was truly a one-of-a-kind individual and the kind of irreplaceable human being who touched everyone he met or knew in a positive way,” Malfitano said. “He was the kind of special friend that comes along once in a lifetime.” SNT

MORE GOODIES FOR A GOOD CAUSE

J

ohn and Leigh-Ann Tumino are the founders of In My Father’s Kitchen (IMFK), a faith-based nonprofit organization on Hawley Avenue that offers outreach and assistance to the chronically homeless and refugee communities in Syracuse. One of the ways they build relationships is through food, delivering chef-prepared, comforting meals to people living on the street and people newly arrived and finding their way in a new country. Last year, John Tumino, a chef and co-founder of Asti Caffe on North Salina Street, introduced Taste and See pasta sauce as a way for people to “eat with purpose” at home, as well as a funding stream for IMFK. The sauce is based on his grandmother’s recipe and made at the food incubator at Nelson Farms in Madison County. Tumino has sold nearly 600 cases of the sauce in the last year, which naturally has him thinking about expanding the Taste and See product line. Starting this week, you’ll be able to “eat with purpose” more often. Like coffee? The Tuminos are collaborating with Nelson-based micro-roaster Peaks Coffee Company to offer New Horizons whole bean coffee. Tumino describes the custom blend as smooth and sweet, and says the name “New Horizons” is a reflection of the ultimate goal of In My Father’s Kitchen: to bring chronically homeless people in from the street and help them cross the bridge to a new life. A 10-ounce bag costs $10. The second Taste and See product is New York state maple syrup. Tumino receives barrels of dark amber maple syrup from Shaver-Hill Farm in Harpersfield, which is reheated at

Nelson Farms and bottled in plastic jugs with the Taste and See label. If the syrup in your cupboard is run-of-the-mill maple-flavored syrup, your taste buds are in for a treat. A 16-ounce container sells for $11.75. The new products were introduced to the public last weekend in Cazenovia, where a “Murder at the Mansion” benefit event to support the work of In My Father’s Kitchen was held at Hillcrest Jephson Estate. “One of our goals is using the marketplace to generate revenue and bring awareness to what we do,” Tumino says. “It’s a platform for people to see what we’re doing and to build our brand.” Taste and See maple syrup, coffee and pasta sauce are available for purchase on Fridays, noon to 4 p.m., at the In My Father’s Kitchen storefront on 501 Hawley Ave., next to ArtRage Gallery. The sauce is also available at Wegmans and some small shops in Central New York, including Syracuse Soapworks and Metro Home Style. For more information, call 529-3640 or visit inmyfatherskitc hen.org or facebook.com/inmyfatherskitchen.

If you attended the Tuesday farmers market in downtown Syracuse during the long hot summer, you might have enjoyed a refreshing iced tea from a vendor known as The Little Tea Cart, and headed home with a custom blend. This week, Little Tea Cart owner and operator Melanie Cutillo is launching a “pop-up” shop at 208 Jefferson St., featuring teas, vintage and new teaware and handmade creations by local artisans. The downtown shop, called The Little Tea Cart & Friends, will feature custom-blended organic teas, scones, breads and other baked goods, local honey and paintings, pottery, fabric arts, upcycled home furnishings and more by local artisans. “As more artisans join, we seem to be taking on an interesting theme (of) part farmers market/art festival/vintage market,” Cutillo said in an email. “And we are looking for more artisans, especially those who are currently not in other shops downtown.” The Little Tea Cart & Friends is having its soft opening this week. Cutillo plans to have the shop open Mondays through Wednesdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours may be adjusted for the holiday season, Cutillo said. The modest crowd had come for the second summertime installment of Hip-Hop Saved My Life, a performance showcase for Syracuse hip-hop artists to share their craft. Underground both literally and figuratively, it was hidden in plain sight, much like the culture that birthed the art form. The history of hip-hop within Syracuse is deep-rooted. During the golden era of the early 1990s, the city hosted shows for legends of the culture including Public Enemy, Gang Starr and Big Daddy Kane. Even the coffin of the late Biggie Smalls was built by the now-defunct Marsellus Casket Company, according to records from the Casket and Funeral Supply Association of America. Syracuse, despite its size, has cultivated a strong local arts scene, giving musicians platforms to showcase and grow their audience. The city is home to acts such as Sophistafunk, whose fusion of live

funk and hip-hop have landed the trio on the national festival circuit. Hip-hop, however, remains on the fringes of the Syracuse music scene and many artists feel a level of discrimination exists from those outside the hip-hop community. “When you go to a different city or different state, everyone shows love; when you’re here, everyone’s hating,” said local rapper Brandon “B Gates” Gaeta. “The Syracuse scene is low. We need more venues to show love for hip-hop. It is a prejudice at the end of the day. A lot of these venues aren’t open to hip-hop.” That prejudice Gaeta speaks of is the perception of hip-hop as violent. Historically and still today, mainstream hip-hop artists have featured lyrics that invoke rape, drug use and gun violence. But other artists whose material focuses on world politics, social issues and advocating equality and community spirit are forced underground, relegated to the sidelines. This lack of knowledge of the diversity in hip-hop, and thus the misperception that all hip-hop is violent, causes venues to shy away from booking the genre. Still, many artists in the city are working hard to change that view by pushing music with a more positive message. Xavier “Exoticz” Sanchez is a founding member of Last Hope Entertainment, a collective of hip-hop artists promoting a message of peace, unity and personal

freedom. “We preach and stand for a message of positivity and that’s what I want to get out to other people,” said Sanchez, a lifelong resident of the Syracuse area. “One person can make a difference and it all starts with making that conscious choice to be the change you want to see in the area.” Last Hope Entertainment’s movement of positivity has worked to unite the local hip-hop community through curating events like the Hip-Hop Saved My Life series, which showcases the diversity of talent within the city. Shows can mix the aggressive, streetwise sound of Southside Syracuse group G4S 500 Boyz with the soulful lyrics and acoustic melodies of Gatea, who performs with an accompanying guitarist. The Last Hope team has begun to cultivate a self-sustaining scene of artists looking to build in their hometown and develop a grass-roots movement. “I feel as though everyone’s dream is to make it in their hometown, as hard as it is,” Sanchez said. “I’m always going to preach (Syracuse area code) 315. There’s a bunch of talent here, there’s a lot of love here, there’s a lot of good people here. If everyone were to take the first step to showing love instead of waiting on it to be shone on them, we’d be in a way better place.” Despite all obstacles, many artists feel

a renewed sense of hope for the budding community. “The scene is on the incline. There’s a lot of fresh talent out here,” Last Hope artist and co-founder Brandon “Sk8board” Mathis said. “Being in touch with the fans is key, make them feel like they’re a part of it, because they are a part of it; we’re all a part of it.” While Syracuse lacks the same hip-hop infrastructure as some of the East Coast’s bigger cities, there are plenty of local strongholds nurturing the area’s wealth of talent. Subcat Studios offers industry-level recording experiences without breaking an artist’s budget. The mixing, mastering and overall experience goes a long way in developing amateur artists into seasoned professionals. “There’s tiers. There’s kids making music that could be good, but they’re recording terrible quality,” said Gaeta, who also engineers a lot of his own work. “They’re wasting their time on a song that, if recorded and engineered correctly, could be a hit. They have the passion, they just need the platform.” Culture comes in waves, and as members of the new generation of talent look to establish their own voices, they know that shifting the older generation’s attitude about hip-hop is crucial for the scene’s success. There was a lot of love that evening at Funk N Waffles. The respect and cama-

raderie was evident from artists of all backgrounds and skill sets. Everyone was there for the same purpose: to share their love for the music. In between hosting and performing, Sanchez spent his time in between sets mingling with fans and making sure everything ran smoothly during the three-hour show. As the Last Hope team took their turn onstage, the energy they gave was reciprocated by the hometown crowd’s cheers and applause. “There’s a lot of ambition here,” said Aaron Hicks, a local musician and house sound engineer for Funk N Waffles. “It’s just the generational gap that keeps things stagnant. There needs to be a cultural change in the city of Syracuse.” For now, hip-hop artists remain on the outside of the local music scene. But change is in the air as the committed few continue to build their movement, show by show, fan by fan, one day at a time. PIP PIP HOORAY When theatergoers hear that Syracuse Stage’s season opener of Great Expectations (through Nov. 6) features a whopping cast of six, count ’em, six players, the initial reaction is that the show will be more of a lampoon, akin to other productions such as The 39 Steps and Around the World in 80 Days that offer quick-change artists scampering about in multiple roles. The expectation that the 1861 Charles Dickens classic will serve as farcical fodder never materializes, however. This sweeping adaptation by Gale Childs Daly offers lots of diverting challenges for its game cast, all of whom are up to the task. And that sense of

fun spills over to the rapt audience, even as the many characters begin to pile atop each other. Even for the uninitiated, Childs Daly’s sleek approach to the original 500-page tome will leave few perplexed by the constant comings and goings. Protagonist Pip (Robbie Simpson) begins his long process from orphan to gentleman, thanks largely to a mysterious pair of adult benefactors. The escaped convict Magwitch (Anthony Cochrane, with a lowdown Bob Hoskins accent) starts Pip on his journey. Meanwhile, the curdled Miss Havisham (Linda Mugleston), spurned years ago at the altar (her uneaten wedding cake is Exhibit A regarding her hatred of men), threatens to ruin Pip’s chances

for happiness by sending her bewitching ward Estella (Marina Shay) to seduce and abandon him. Along the way, Pip’s progress as an ambitious gentleman also threatens to transform him into an upper-class jerk; at one point he even disdains his longtime friendship with his blacksmith brother-inlaw Joe (William Oliver Watkins). Robbie Simpson, the only actor who doesn’t have to switch characters in this production, nevertheless expertly charts Pip’s moral shifts while always retaining his essential goodness, such as secretly supplying needed funds to help bankroll the business venture of his chum John Wemmick (Seth Andrew Bridges). Director Michael Bloom quickens this Dickens with smooth aplomb, as he negotiates the many costume changes that come with the colliding character arcs. The rotating turntable set from scenic designer Michael Schweikhardt is an indispensable asset for Bloom’s artistic vision, most memorably in the dazzling, nautical scene concerning Pip and Magwitch’s rowboat escape from the authorities. Childs Daly’s multiple-role approach is also much less of a gimmick when it actually enhances several of Dickens’ characters. Instead of having separate players incarnate Estella and Biddy, the latter as an unrequited love interest for Pip, actress Marina Shay easily shifts in successive scenes from Estella’s haughty, unattainable femme fatale to portray Biddy’s virginal sweetness. Five members of the Great Expectations cast also get to humorously cut loose with two plays-within-the-play interludes, as Pip takes in productions of Hamlet and a Gilbert-and-Sullivan type of musical opera that are mounted by a rowdy theater troupe. The performers’ overt exuberance plays to the back row, and perhaps into the lobby as well, during these scene-stealing treats. Great Expectations officially kicks off the tenure of new Syracuse Stage artistic director Robert Hupp, although former artistic director Timothy Bond actually plotted the 2016-2017 schedule before his departure. Hupp could not have asked for a more endearing parting gift. SNT

STAGE

By Bill DeLapp Korrie Taylor (left) notices some strange window dressing during Night of the Living Dead at Central New York Playhouse. Michael Davis photo.

APOCALYPSE CHOW ON ZOMBIE MENU

T

he inexplicable mania for all things zombie continues to grow, spurred by the successes of cable TV series (The Walking Dead) as well as novels (World War Z, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) that have led to cinematic spinoffs. There’s obviously a demographic that grooves to these end-of-days considerations involving the carnivorous undead, which meld the concepts of an episode of Survivor with the dining experience at a Chinese buffet.

It all started, however, with director George A. Romero’s low-budget, trend-setting 1968 horror feature Night of the Living Dead, the creepshow that raised the bar in terms of relentless nihilism and shocking gore. The Central New York Playhouse pays scrupulous Halloween-time homage with its streamlined stage adaptation of Night of the Living Dead (running through Nov. 5 at the company’s Shoppingtown mall venue), in which seven people are stranded in an abandoned Pennsylvania farmhouse as they attempt to stave off an attack of carnivorous corpses. Lori Allen Ohm’s adaptation focuses mostly on the nightlong farmhouse siege, while condensing other elements that could not be transposed to the stage, such as cemetery visitor Barbara (Lynn King) and her escape from the ghouls during the movie’s long opening sequence. Then again, audiences who take in the floorboards version are surely fans of the sick flick, whose public domain status (the movie was

never copyrighted) only increased its popularity by becoming more readily available through numerous TV broadcasts and as a VCR perennial. And those aficionados are familiar with the film’s pop-up shocks, as well as nuances such as the reason why the basement door is mysteriously locked. They also know certain dialogue exchanges by heart, as Ohm retains the many keepers: “The cellar is the safest place,” “They’re coming to get you, Barbara,” and the infamous closing line, “That’s one more for the fire.” Director and set designer Dan Rowlands is no stranger to the zombie oeuvre, having helmed Evil Dead: The Musical as the 2014 Halloween attraction at the playhouse. Rowlands adheres to the movie’s stark black-and-white visual style, with the cast members’ clothing and the single living room set all dressed in shades of greyscale. Unlike the flesh eaters’ shambling cadence, Rowlands’ show moves at a fast clip, although there are some unavoidable

moments when it feels like a radio play. Yet like those zombies lurking outside, the audience is also peeking into the farmhouse window, which adds a neat touch of voyeurism. On occasion, Rowlands will also dispatch some members of the pastyfaced walking dead (including a nun, a bride and a child) to prowl the perimeter while the audience watches the show, as the zombies lurch around like patrons at a Palermo happy hour. Living Dead is mostly played with straight faces by the ensemble, with James Sanders as anti-hero Ben leading the serious tone. (Ben was played in the movie by black actor Duane Jones, an example of Romero’s colorblind casting that added an unexpected race-card wrinkle to the proceedings.) Sanders’ Ben has plenty of convincing moments, especially when his character resorts to clobbering cadaver craniums with a crowbar. In a stage production devoted to perverse hunger games, Josh Taylor as the antagonistic Harry Cooper ably chews the scenery, although he also has the show’s meatiest role. “Play with the rabbit ears!” he snarls, as the survivors try to find newscasts on an old TV set. Korrie Taylor (Josh’s offstage wife) plays Harry’s long-suffering spouse, Helen, in scenes of domestic strife that fleetingly recall Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? There are several tongue-in-cheek moments, notably when a getaway truck with two passengers (Katie Tucker and Matthew Soffietti) explodes offstage, sending their body parts into the clutches of the munch-mode zombies for some impromptu bone appetit. The amusing artistic success of Night of the Living Dead might lead Central New York Playhouse and Rowlands to consider adapting director George Romero’s 1979 movie sequel Dawn of the Dead, which is set in an empty mall. The company wouldn’t have to venture very far for inspiration to mount that show. SNT

MUSIC

By Jessica Novak

LOCAL HOP Chris James & Mama G. Swamp Grass Tonic (independent). Since 2012, Chris James and Mama G (Anna Gustafson) have delivered their version of bluegrass, known as swamp grass: high-energy songs that maintain an old-time vibe. Their first album puts it on full display, keeping a raw element to the music and showing off their true chops. The disc captures the duo’s live show beautifully, which speaks to their tight harmonies and instrumentals. The songs, all written by James, burst open with “Highest Meadows,” a tune with flying lyrics that they throw out with ease: “There’s something left and I’m gonna take it/ climb the mountain and live butt naked/ buy me a home in the highest meadows/ safe away from those nasty fellows.” Employing a similar tempo, “Bad Boy” and “Accidentally” bump along with that familiar bluegrass chunk. “Homestead Wings” has harmonies reminiscent of the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider,” while Gustafson and

James show off on their respective axes, mandolin and guitar, for “Fight Worth Being Won.” “Without Love” showcases James’ lyrical sensitivity and “Settle For More” combines long vocal lines with intricate instrumentals for an engaging juxtaposition. The album — recorded, mixed and mastered by Josh Russell at Sprung House Studios — impressively captures what the duo has honed for four years; you can tell it wasn’t overly produced, taken apart and put back together. The CD’s endearing liner notes also prove how important their musical family has become to the tunes themselves. James and Gustafson won’t let their brothers and sisters down with this disc. For more information, visit facebook. com/Chris JamesMamaG. Coffee & Beer. Souvenir (independent). Although it’s the fourth track on Souvenir, “Grass for Your Pillow” is the type of song that gets stuck in your head with its beautifully delicate harmonies:

“Grass for your pillow/ leaves for your bed/ stars for your cover/ a dream for your head/ I’m staying home/ until the seasons change/ and snow turns into rain./ And we’ve been wandering for years/ looking to lay down straight lines/ there’s no use crying any tears/ no sense remembering our time.” The band’s members — including Jim O’Connor on drums and percussion, Ben Alexander on guitar and vocals and Leif Olsen on vocals, guitars, bass and harmonica — are joined by vocalist Liz Strodel on “Grass for Your Pillow,” making the middle of the disc like the cream in the Oreo cookie. Most of the songs were recorded and mixed at More Sound Studio with Andrew Greacen (“The Philosopher” was done at SubCat Studios), and those tracks offer the right combination of intelligent lyrics, mellow vibes and laid-back vocals, all making for easy listening. For more information, visit facebook.com/coffee andbeertheband. Second Line Syracuse. (independent). Formed in summer 2015 after winning a grant from Salt City Dishes, Second Line Syracuse works a genre that has been popularized in recent years by acts such as Trombone Shorty, as they mix modern and traditional New Orleans-style brass band music with touches of jazz, funk and hip-hop. Guided by multitalented trombonist-vocalist Melissa Gardiner, the unit nabbed a prime spot at last summer’s

Syracuse M&T Jazz Fest, and they prove why they earned that booking with this disc. Mixing energetic originals with covers that honor everyone from Sonny Stitt to the Rolling Stones, the album hits hard with tracks like “Ditty Bop” and settles down easy with “Coucher du Soleil.” Gardiner leads a prime pack of musicians: saxophonist Kiel Clark; Jeffrey Stockham, Nicholas Fields and Gabriel DiMartino on trumpet; trombonist Nicholas Abelgore; Matthew Rossi on sousaphone; William Gorman on organ/keys; and Byron Cage, Joshua Dekaney and Jon Kane on drums and percussion. Kane also recorded, mixed and produced the disc with co-producer DiMartino. New interpretations of songs like Jason Derulo’s “Trumpets” and a jazzed-up take on the Rolling Stones’ “It’s All Over Now” are easy favorites, although Gardiner’s originals stand strong among the covers. “Funky Duck” (Vulfpeck) is wildly infectious, and so is her own “Ditty Bop,” with “Ode to Fela” serving as a brilliant tribute to Nigerian musician and composer Fela Kuti. “Second Solstice,” another Gardiner original, mixes just the right groove with popping horns. This album is a breath of fresh air and hopefully not the last from this rising band. For more information, visit secondlinesyracuse.com. SNT

he Robert Shetterly show Finding Your Power, on display at the ArtRage Gallery, presents portraits of 24 people, all of them involved with struggles for civil rights or economic fairness, for a healthier environment or self-determination for indigenous peoples.

Some subjects are national figures, others best known in local communities. All appear in vivid portraits, with the subjects’ images set against green, blue, gold and red backgrounds The paintings come from the Americans Who Tell The Truth series, a project Shetterly began more than a decade ago. It now consists of more than 200 works and continues to grow as the artist paints new subjects. At ArtRage, the paintings provide a cross-section of Shetterly’s portfolio. The portrait of Bob Moses is vibrant and expansive, filling most of a canvas. He was an organizer for civil rights in 1960s Mississippi and later founded the Algebra Project, which teaches math to underserved children. Shetterly’s portrait of Fannie Lou Hamer, a major advocate for political participation and voting rights in segregation-era Mississippi, takes a different approach. Her image is positioned in the lower half of the canvas, leaving more room for a sky-blue background. Another set of paintings depicts activists ranging from Lois Gibbs, instrumental in demanding remediation for the horrific Love Canal pollution in 1980, to Tim Dechristo, a current-day activist who works to preserve wilderness.

Shetterly also did a portrait of Kim Wasserman, part of a neighborhood coalition concerned with the impact of coal plants on a Chicago neighborhood. Wasserman isn’t a household name, and her inclusion in the series reflects Shetterly’s commitment to painting portraits of everyday people who took a stand on an important issue. In that vein, Claudette Colvin’s portrait hangs at ArtRage. On March 2, 1955, she protested public-transit policies in Montgomery, Ala., by refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger. Her arrest came nine months before Rosa Parks took similar action on a Montgomery bus. The timeline for those depicted in the portraits extends across a roughly 50-year period, stretching from the late Cesar Chavez, whose efforts to organize farm workers intensified during the 1960s, to Ai-Jen Poo, a present-day activist who campaigns to improve conditions for domestic workers. The exhibition also has ties to Central New York, as seen in several portraits. Phillip Berrigan was born in Syracuse and later spent many years protesting against nuclear weapons and economic inequality. Shetterly also created a portrait of Mara Sapon-Shevin, a writer, professor at Syracuse University, and advocate for the

FingerLakesMTF.com

principle of inclusive education. A third portrait depicts Oren Lyons, faithkeeper for the Onondaga Nation, and recognized internationally for speaking out for the rights of indigenous peoples and on climate change. Finding Your Power is just one thread of a larger project. Indeed, Shetterly has displayed his portraits in 26 states, in venues such as libraries and universities, a San Francisco courthouse and even a sandwich shop. The exhibits are selected from a portfolio encompassing Abraham Lincoln and Dwight Eisenhower; Dorothy Day, a founder of the Catholic Worker movement; and Nicole and Jonas Maines, transgender activists. Each portrait appears in a 30-by-36 format, combining Shetterly’s interest in art, narrative, and the series’ possibilities for education. Long before he began the Americans Who Tell The Truth project, Shetterly was a full-time artist who created many paintings and prints. He did a series of etchings based on “Proverbs of Hell” by writer William Blake. Finding Your Power continues through Nov. 12 at ArtRage Gallery, 505 Hawley Ave. The venue is open Wednesdays through Fridays, 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 218-5711. COLLEEN DEACON The Democratic candidate is willing to work across the aisle if she’s elected for the 24th Congressional District seat By Walt Shepperd Michael Davis photos

C

olleen Deacon is Westcott born and raised and never, even now, more than two blocks from where she started. H.W. Smith Elementary, Levy Middle and Nottingham High schools. Thirteen years of working for Syracuse mayors and a U.S. senator. Now Colleen Deacon is stepping out to run for office herself, as a Democrat challenging first-term incumbent Republican John Katko to represent the local 24th Congressional District. “My first thought,” she observes now, “was that this is a big step, a risk, and I’m not a risk taker.” She asked her 13-year-old son for perspective. “Mom, you have an opportunity to make a difference,” he told her. “If you don’t take this chance, you’re going to regret it for the rest of your life.” Elected two years ago to a youth council which excited him with a tour of the Capitol in Albany, Deacon’s son has otherwise shown little interest in politics. “Maybe he wants to go out a winner,” his mother reflects. With polls showing Katko holding a commanding lead, Deacon feels her personal story to be more relevant to the race than political posturing. “As a single mom I needed Medicaid and food stamps,” she notes. “I put myself through Syracuse University with minimum wage jobs and student loans, which I just paid off last year. How many in Congress have had to use the programs they debate?” In advance of the Nov. 8 election, The Syracuse New Times discussed the issues with Deacon. Next week, we’ll publish a conversation with John Katko. Is the stalemate in Congress a permanent way of life, or can there be a breakthrough in decision making? What would it take? I think it can absolutely be broken. You don’t see anything getting done since 2010. This Congress has passed the least amount of bills that have ever been passed. I think we can correlate that to the amount of money that’s in politics. That’s what it boils down to: the fact that members of Congress spend so much time raising money as opposed to actually working on issues, working on legislation, working to solve 10.26.16 - 11.1.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

problems. We have to repeal Citizens United. We have to make sure that dirty money, special interest money, gets out of politics and get the Congress moving again. What are our foreign policy priorities? The No. 1 priority that’s not negotiable is to make sure we’re doing everything to keep Americans safe, not only at home, but abroad as well. What we’re seeing right now is ISIS, this terrorist organization which has been able to fill a vacuum. We have to do everything we can to not only contain, but eliminate the threat of ISIS, both here and abroad. We have to make sure we’re working together with our allies, gathering intelligence, working with our generals, hearing directly from the people who are over there about what the situation actually is, what we can do to help. We have been able to reclaim 45 percent of the territory. We have been able to take out their No. 1 online recruiter. We’ve had to make 13,000 air strikes and we are making ground, but it’s not enough. We have to do more to stabilize the Middle East, to work with our technology companies and our online social media organizations, What kind of economic development can really touch our degree of local poverty? We’re one of the most impoverished cities in the country. We’re No. 1 in the concentrated poverty of the black and Hispanic communities, and that’s unacceptable. Absolutely No. 1 is jobs and the economy. We have to figure out ways to provide opportunities for people to be able to go to work and feed their families. If you’re working 40 hours a week, you should not be in poverty. There are solutions we can do right now, if there is a minimum wage, to provide paid family leave, to have a program in place that allows people to stay home with a newborn child or a sick parent without having to worry about putting food on the table or paying the bills. We are the only industrialized nation in the world that does not offer paid family leave. And providing affordable day care, making sure there are tax credits for our families, whether they are middle class or low income, so that they can afford to send their children to safe, quality day care. But it’s back to jobs and the economy.

What can we do to encourage small business growth?

Have you heard anything in this campaign that changed your mind on any issue?

Let’s bring federal dollars back to the region. Small business is the backbone of our economy. Let’s work with public-private partnerships. Let’s work with our academic partners.

I’m out all the time, talking directly to the voters, hearing about their needs, their complaints. I’ve learned a lot, I’ve been able to hear new issues and concerns that I haven’t thought of before, but nothing to change my mind about.

Can we stop the jobs moving out of the country? How? It’s not a level playing field. We can’t compete with other countries when they don’t have the same laws that we do. But one place they can’t take our jobs is infrastructure. If we fix our roads, our bridges, our water, we can put thousands of people to work. And our infrastructure won’t be leaving the country.

How can we begin a resolution to the conflicts between police and communities of color?

How is the media handling politics in this campaign? I think the media is becoming more fact-based than it used to be. I think the information is better, people just have to make sure they are accessing it. There is really excellent journalism going on in these campaigns, but voters can be misinformed, so they have to sort out the true stories. Which presidential candidate do you support, and why? I support Sen. Hillary Clinton. I’ve been supporting her since she announced her campaign. She understands the issues. She has worked hard. She negotiated treaties all over the world. She understands foreign policy better than anyone I can think of. She’s built relationships. She knows how to get things done. And she cares. She understands this isn’t about the wealthy, but it’s about getting things done for people, solving problems for people from all walks of life.

By listening. First and foremost, what’s lacking right now is the fact that we’re not listening to each other. We have to bring people to the table. People are not protesting just because they want to protest; people are protesting because they are seeing injustice. And injustice is not solved by injustice. We’ve got to come together to nationally address this issue. Understand that it’s not about defending your side, it’s about fixing this problem, actually looking at it from maybe another perspective. Not just screaming at each other. Has free trade begun to cost us? Where is the balance? I’m all for free trade as long as it’s a level playing field. We’ve lost thousands of jobs, good jobs that can support families. We’re exporting fewer products than we’re importing, and that’s a problem. Let’s go back to the table and see where we can put our own people to work, and not outsourcing our jobs to China, outsourcing our jobs to India, but putting our own people to work here at home. What is a realistic strategy for immigration and those living here illegally? I think the lack of immigration reform is one of the biggest examples of the failure of Congress. There is a bipartisan piece of legislation that was passed a couple of years ago and the House wouldn’t even take it up. A

How will you be pro-active in Congress? As far as legislation goes, I am somebody who wants to get things done. When I worked in the senator’s office we worked with Republican mayors, independent town supervisors, it didn’t matter as long as we were getting things done. But it’s not only about getting legislation passed. It’s about having relationships and solving problems. number of the senators who actually drafted the legislation wouldn’t even support it in the end. It just shows the partisanship that goes on in Congress. I thought it was a great bill. It addressed a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants who are in this country. It provided funding for adequate border security, making sure we are keeping our borders protected. And it also allows for people who are here to become citizens as long as they are law-abiding, don’t have a criminal history, and they want to work their way up to become tax-paying citizens who could become entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, Congress didn’t take up this issue. What is most unique about you in pursuit of public office? I’ve been here for so long working in Sen. (Kirsten) Gillibrand’s office, working directly with the people of this district, really building relationships, solving problems and fighting hard for the people. I’ve worked with small businesses to help them cut through red tape. I’ve worked with our veterans communities to connect up to some local jobs. I’ve worked with our seniors to help them avoid financial scams. I was in the mayor’s office for six years and I understand how government works on all levels. I know the challenges we face and the potential that we have. And that’s what I want to do. I understand what it’s like for so many families that are struggling. I understand what it’s like for so many people across this district who haven’t had a fair shake. SNT syracusenewtimes.com | 10.26.16 - 11.1.16

You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home.

Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. Sources of Information and Assistance. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the tollfree helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877BANK NYS (1-877226-5697) or visit the Department’s website at www.banking. state.ny.us. Foreclosure Rescue Scams. Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. fantasize about what your four great-grandmothers and four great-grandfathers may have been doing on Nov. 1, 1930. What? You have no idea how to begin? You don’t even know their names? If that’s the case, I hope you’ll remedy your ignorance. Your ability to create the future you want requires you to learn more about where and whom you came from. Halloween costume suggestion: your most interesting ancestor.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) At any one time, more than 2 million frozen human embryos are stored in tissue banks throughout Europe and North America. When the time is right, their owners retrieve them and bring them to term. That’s the first scenario I invite you to use as a metaphor for your life in the coming weeks. Here’s a second scenario: Scotch whisky is a potent mind-altering substance. Any particular batch must mature for at least three years, and may be distilled numerous times. There are currently 20 million barrels of the stuff mellowing in Scottish warehouses. And what do these two scenarios have to do with you? It’s time to tap into resources that you’ve been saving in reserve -- that haven’t been ripe or ready until now. Halloween costume suggestions: a woman who is nine months pregnant; a blooming rose or sunflower; ripe fruit. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) To create a bottle

of Cabernet Sauvignon, a winemaker needs about 700 grapes. Compare this process with rainmaking. When water vapor that’s high in the sky becomes dense enough, it condenses into tiny pearls of liquid called cloud droplets. If the humidity rises even further, a million of these babies might band together to form a single raindrop that falls to earth. And what does this have to do with your life? I suspect that in the coming weeks, you will have both an affinity and a skill for processes that resemble winemaking and rainmaking. You’ll need a lot of raw material and energetic effort to produce a relatively small marvel -- but that’s exactly as it should be. Halloween costume suggestion: a raindrop or bottle of wine.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Some Brazilians

eat the heads of piranhas in the belief they’re aphrodisiacs. In Zimbabwe, women may make strategic use of baboon urine to enhance their allure. The scientific name for Colombia’s leaf-cutter ant is hormiga culona, translated as “fat-assed ant.” Ingesting the roasted bodies of these critters is thought to boost sexual desire. Since you’re in a phase when tapping in to your deepest erotic longings will be healthy and educational, you may want to adopt elements of the aforementioned love drugs to create your Halloween costume. Here are other exotic aphrodisiacs from around the world that you might be inspired by: asparagus, green M&Ms, raw oysters, wild orchids, horny goat weed.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Do you know how

to repair a broken zipper or patch a hole in your bicycle tire? Are you familiar with the art of caulking a bathtub or creating a successful budget? Can you compose a graceful thank-you note, cook a hearty soup from scratch, or overcome your pride so as to reconcile with an ally after an argument? These are the kinds of tasks I trust you will focus on in the coming weeks. It’s time to be very practical and concrete. Halloween costume suggestion: Mr. or Ms. Fix-It.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) In the film Terminator 2, Arnold Schwarzenegger played a benevolent android who traveled here from the future. As a strong, silent action hero, he didn’t need to say much. In fact, he earned $30,000 for every word he uttered. I’m hoping your speech will pack a comparable punch in the coming days. My reading of the astrological omens suggests that your persuasiveness should be at a peak. You’ll have an exceptional ability to say what you mean and mean what you say. Use this superpower with flair and pre-

cision! Halloween costume suggestion: ancient Greek orator Demosthenes; Martin Luther King Jr.; Virginia Woolf; Sojourner Truth; rapper MC Lyte, Winston Churchill.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s the prosperi-

ty-building phase of your cycle. Let’s celebrate! Let’s brainstorm! Are there rituals you can create to stimulate the financial lobes of your imagination, thereby expediting your cash flow? Here are a few ideas: 1. Glue a photo of yourself on a $20 bill. 2. Make a wealth shrine in your home. Stock it with symbols of specific thrills you can buy for yourself when you have more money. 3. Halloween costume suggestions: a giant bar of gold, a banker carrying a briefcase full of big bills, Tony Stark, Lady Mary Crawley, Jay Gatsby, Lara Croft, the Yoruban wealth goddess Aje.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) During this Halloween season, you have cosmic permission to be a bigger, bolder and extra-beguiling version of yourself. I trust you will express your deep beauty with precise brilliance and imagine your future with superb panache and wander wherever the hell you feel like wandering. It’s time to be stronger than your fears and wilder than your trivial sins. Halloween costume suggestion: the superhero version of yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) I won’t offer you the cliché “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Instead, I’ll provide alternatives. How about this, from the video game Portal 2: “When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! Say, ‘I don’t want your damn lemons!’” Or you could try this version, from my friend Barney: “When life gives you lemons, draw faces on them like Tom Hanks did on his volleyball in the movie Cast Away, and engage them in sexy philosophical conversation.” Or consider this Brazilian proverb: “When life gives you lemons, make caipirinhas.” (Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail.) Suggestion: Play around with these themes to create your Halloween costume. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) All of us are creators and destroyers. It’s fun and healthy to add fresh elements to our lives, but it’s also crucial to dispose of things that hurt and distort us. Even your body is a hotbed of both activities, constantly killing off old cells and generating new ones. But in my understanding, you are now in a phase when there’s far more creation than destruction. Enjoy the exalted buzz! Halloween costume suggestions: a creator god or goddess, like the Greeks’ Gaia or Prometheus; Rainbow-Snake from the Australian Aborigines; Unkulunkulu from the Zulus; or Coyote, Raven or Spider Grandmother from indigenous North American tribes. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) In 1938, a chef

named Ruth Wakefield dreamed up a brilliant invention: chocolate chip cookies. She sold her recipe to the Nestlé company in return for $1 and a lifetime supply of chocolate. Maybe she was happy with that arrangement, but I think she cheated herself. And so I offer her action as an example of what you should NOT do. During the next 10 months, I expect you will come up with many useful innovations and intriguing departures from the way things have always been done. Make sure you get full value in return for your gifts! Halloween costume ideas: Thomas Edison, Marie Curie, Hedy Lamarr, Leonardo da Vinci, Temple Grandin, George Washington Carver, Mark Zuckerberg.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Speaking on

behalf of the cosmic powers, I authorize you to escape dull realities and go rambling through the frontier. Feel free to fantasize twice as hard and wild as you normally do. Avoid literalists and realists who think you should be more like them. This is not a time to fuss over exacting details, but rather to soar above the sober nonsense and see as far as you can. You have permission to exult in the joys of wise innocence. Halloween costume suggestions: bohemian poet, mad scientist, carefree genius, brazen explorer
