IN THIS ISSUE CENTRAL NEW YORK WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

A video shot earlier this week of a Dunkin’ Donuts employee pouring water on a homeless man who had been sleeping in the North Salina Street restaurant has gone viral online and has been picked up by many news outlets across the country. Jeremy Dufresne had been using the business to charge his phone to call and say goodnight to his family. He put his head down while he waited for it to charge, according to Syracuse. com. An employee then came up behind him and poured a pitcher full of water over his head and saying, “How many times to I got to tell you to stop sleeping in here,” while another filmed it and laughed off-camera. The two employees were fired, and a protest was held outside the store with threats of a boycott.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

At the Royal College of Art’s annual London fashion show in June, one graduate unveiled a unique approach to accessorizing garments: crystallized bodily fluids. Alice Potts displayed a pair of ballet shoes decorated with crystals formed from sweat, along with a fake fur adorned with urine crystals. Potts told Reuters the “more natural materials” could offer environmental benefits not possible with traditional plastics.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINAL

In Youngstown, Ohio, police responding to a call about multiple gunshots on June 10 spotted Dai’ryon Mitchell, 21, speeding away from the scene in an SUV. He refused to pull over but finally left the vehicle and ran into a home, where he climbed through a window and hung from the ledge. Mitchell tried to climb back in, The Youngstown Vindicator reported, but lost his grip and fell directly into the arms of officers below, who handcuffed him.

a bus, painted it in Mexico’s colors and booked passage for themselves and the bus on a ship going to Spain, where The Daily Mail reported, the friends planned to drive the bus to Russia. But just before they boarded the ship in April, one of the five, Javier, told his friends his wife had put the kibosh on his trip. So the remaining four did the next best thing: They made a cardboard life-size cutout of Javier, looking grumpy and wearing a shirt that says, “My wife didn’t let me go,” and set off for Russia. The cardboard Javier was very popular at the soccer venues, attracting female admirers, appearing on the big screen, crowdsurfing and being photographed with fellow football fans from all over the world.

LUNAR LANDING

Many citizens of the world are weary of the war and strife that seem to be consuming the news, and about 200,000 of them have already signed up to put it all in the rear-view mirror by becoming citizens of Asgardia. This coming-soon colony on the moon is led by Igor Ashurbeyli, a Russian engineer, computer scientist and businessman who was inaugurated as its leader on June 25 in Vienna. Asgar-

Kyle McAleer, 20, a Chicago Cubs fan from Iowa, adopted a goofy “rally cap” idea from former Cubs player Starlin Castro a few years ago: a plastic bucket. But no one’s laughing now: As McAleer and his family watched a game from seats under Wrigley Field’s manual scoreboard on July 24, a 6- to 8-inch metal pin fell out of the board and onto McAleer’s head, where he had only moments earlier secured the bucket. Although he suffered a cut requiring five staples, McAleer is crediting the bucket for saving his life: “It might have fractured my skull. It definitely could have been fatal. I am extremely lucky,” he told the Associated Press. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said the incident has been ruled an accident, not a structural issue, and the team has sent McAleer some swag, including a jersey.

HERE’S TO ABSENT FRIENDS

dia’s parliament plans to set up “space arks” with artificial gravity in the next 10 to 15 years, where its projected 150 million citizens can live permanently, Reuters reports, and Ashurbeyli hopes settlement on the moon will be complete within 25 years. Asgardia is named after Asgard, a “world in the sky” in Norse mythology. Its leaders hope to attract a population from among the “most creative” in humanity, perhaps using “IQ tests,” according to Ashurbeyli. Best of all: For the time being, becoming a citizen online is free.

EWWWWWW!

Susan Allan of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, was driving with her son on May 9, enjoying the beautiful weather with the sunroof open, when they were suddenly hit with a cold material that smelled to them like feces mixed with chlorine. “Like a clean poop smell if that’s possible,” Allan told Vice. “My son threw up, and we had so much in our faces. Both of us, our faces were covered in poop.” Apparently, poop is falling from the sky all over Canada; Transport Canada has received 18 such reports this year. But the government has not issued Jen Sorensen

an explanation for the phenomenon. Allan thinks it is related to airplanes flying overhead and the Canadian government is covering it up. But Transport Canada pooh-poohed her theory and has declined to comment further.

OH, FUDGE

KCCI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa, reported on June 27 the loss of a tractor-trailer load of chocolate when the truck caught fire near Dexter, Iowa. The trailer, full of chocolate from Hershey, Pennsylvania, was westbound when it experienced brake problems that caused it to ignite. The driver pulled off and was able to detach the trailer from the cab before it caught fire. No injuries were reported, except to the chocolate, which was a total loss.

WEIRD SCIENCE

Montgomery, Alabama, resident Kayla Rahn, 30, had been trying for months to lose weight, but instead experienced dramatic weight gain and pain in her stomach. She became out of breath just taking a short walk. Finally, in May, Rahn’s mother took her to the emergency room at Jackson Hospital, where doctors discovered a growth attached to her ovary and removed what turned out to be a 50-pound, benign cyst, reported WSFA 12 News. The cyst resembled a large watermelon in size. “This is one of the largest I have ever seen,” Dr. Gregory Jones told reporters. “We are very excited things went well for her.”

BARE NECESSITY

Travelers aboard a Delta Air Lines flight that had just landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta on June 26 were startled when a nearly naked man ran up to their plane and jumped onto a wing, then attempted to open an emergency exit. Jhyrin Jones, 19, had scaled a fence topped with razor wire to reach the runway; just minutes before, he had jumped on some parked cars at a nearby construction site and threatened to “kill y’all, I’m going to blow this place up, trust nobody, you better believe me,” according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A police report indicated Jones “appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.” He was charged with criminal trespass and public indecency, among other things.

THINGS THAT MATTER B y L u k e Pa r s n o w

CUOMO GIVES COLD SHOULDER TO EXPLAIN STATEWIDE EXODUS It’s now October. That means another long and cold upstate New York winter is on our doorstep. And it’s those winters that Gov. Andrew Cuomo apparently believes are mainly responsible for New York’s ongoing crisis of residents fleeing the state in droves to live elsewhere. “People will make demographic choices about where they want to live,” Cuomo told reporters last week after an economic-development speech to the state Business Council. “Some of them are climate-based. Some of them are based for personal reasons. So the diminishing population in upstate is not new. People were leaving upstate New York because they had to in the past.” According to the Associated Press, the governor said that while job losses and high taxes once drove people to leave

New York, his administration has ended that trend and improved the local economic situation. “If somebody wants to move to Florida because they want to move to Florida, God bless them,” Cuomo said. “They want to fish; they want the warm weather. But we were chasing people from the state. We are now attracting people to this state.” Cuomo, who is up for re-election to a third term in November, isn’t wrong that the climate has played a role in citizens’ decisions to migrate elsewhere. But he is incredibly wrong in implying that the weather is the reason for people leaving and concluding that the exodus has slowed, let alone reversed course. Most of us know people who have moved out of New York in recent years. According to United Van Lines, a St.

Louis, Missouri-based moving company, New York ranked as the third most moved-out-of state in 2017. It has ranked in the top three states for the last seven years in a row. The highest percentage of people leaving — 46 percent — left for job-related reasons, the study found. Nearly 20 percent of people left for lifestyle and family reasons, 5 percent left for health reasons and 29 percent left for retirement reasons. You could argue that all of the aforementioned reasons could include cold weather. You could even argue that the “job-related” category is also affected by the weather, as warm-weather careers like construction are going to be more plentiful in states where it’s not cold half the year. But it’s unlikely that the weather is the primary reason why 1 million people have moved out of New York since 2010. And to point out the obvious, it was also cold and snowy here long before large portions of the population decided to pick up and leave. Yes, it is true that the warm-weather states of Florida, Texas, Arizona and the Carolinas are the ones that have seen the most population increases over the last 20 years. Florida even surpassed New York in 2014 as the nation’s third-most populous state. But Minnesota, South Dakota, New Hampshire and Maine have all seen population increases, and those locations wouldn’t exactly be considered balmy.

Are the governor’s comments silly? Yes. Yet his statements may imply that he believes the economic restoration of New York — particularly upstate — is somehow complete and that the mass exodus crisis is over. But we are still in a crisis. Between July 2016 and July 2017, the 50 counties that make up upstate lost a combined 3,596 residents, according to U.S. Census data estimates. Central New York is certainly not immune to this problem. Tompkins County is the only regional county that has seen a population increase since the 2010 census, while New York City and the downstate area also see population boosts. “Young people were leaving because parents were saying, ‘You better leave. There are no economic opportunities here.’ That is no longer the case,” Cuomo also said last week. While the number of young people coming into the state is higher than those leaving, nearly 20 percent of those who moved out in 2017 were ages 18 to 34. That is still significant, and it’s unlikely young people who moved out for economic reasons just a few years ago are still leaving at the same rate because of the weather. While upstate has seen some gradual improvement in the last decade or so, people fleeing from this state remains one of New York’s most pressing dilemmas. And we will get no closer to solving this problem if our governor believes the weather is to blame. SNT

Making friends with monarchs at the SkyRiver Butterfly exhibit at the New York State Fair. Bill DeLapp photo

BUGGING OUT

A FOND FAREWELL TO THIS SEASON’S MONARCH BUTTERFLIES

M

aybe you have noticed them, flashes of orange and black flitting about the asters in your backyard garden, or around the flowerbeds bordering your neighbor’s home, in the fallow fields, or even amid the landscaping at more unlikely spots like Wegmans in DeWitt. They are the celebrated royalty of the lepidoptera world: the monarch butterflies. And they are on the move.

After all, it is early October, and these fragile, striking insects are on their way back to the homes of their ancestors, far to the Southwest. Arguably America’s favorite bug, these Danaus plexippus (named for the mythological king of Egypt and descendent of Zeus) are not the same butterflies that you may have seen arriving in midsummer but their progeny, the fourth generation of an annual life cycle that began months earlier in the high Sierra Madre mountains of central Mexico. Some of this is familiar, a classic study in insect propagation and metamorpho-

8

sis: Monarchs mate, the female lays eggs, then four days later a distinctively striped yellow, black and white caterpillar hatches. Feeding for the next two weeks on the milkweed plant where it originated, the sated caterpillar then spins itself into a chrysalis and, after a serious, 10-day transformation, emerges as an adult monarch. Then things get complicated. Since monarchs are coldblooded and can’t endure or function at low temperatures, their “winter-over” habitat in Mexico’s Michoacon Hills (and California’s Pacific Grove for those west of the Rockies) pro-

10.3.18 - 10.9.18 | syracusenew times.com

vides the requisite climate where millions hibernate until February. Summoning the last of their strength, these butterflies then fly north in search of milkweed, the only food the larvae eat, lay eggs, and, their evolutionary mission completed, die. This reproduce-and-die cycle will repeat itself twice more, through March and April and then through May and June as the monarchs move steadily northward, with expendable lives lasting only two to six weeks. The fourth, and final generation, however, is blessed. With expanded life spans of six to eight months commencing in

late summer and early fall, this is the final strain that inhabits your arrays of late-blooming flowers, sipping nectar through a proboscis that functions as a straw and coils up when not in use, and pollinating your garden. And, when the time comes — around mid-September and beyond hereabouts — heading home. Watching monarchs fly belies their epic fortitude and their daunting mission. At 2.5 to 2.75 grams they seem weightless, wafted by the ficklest of breezes, and driven by four gossamer, dappled wings that beat in short bursts at 300 to 720 beats per minute, a lower rate than most other butterflies. And their flight pattern, full of quick turns, swoops and rises, can seem erratic. But by riding thermals, or warm updrafts, and coasting at speeds estimated to be anywhere from 8 to 25 mph, and replenishing their energy along the way, these peripatetic vagabonds manage to cover 2,500 miles back to the winter home of their great-grandparents. Even more mysterious is the monarch’s guidance system, an unexplained ability to somehow navigate an unfamiliar course of thousands of miles, arriving at a refuge they have never seen. Like many other species, however, monarch butterflies are feeling the negative pressure of human activity. Their Mexican winter habitat has suffered from illegal logging, and their larval food source, milkweed, has diminished from agricultural land practices, pesticides and herbicides. “Monarch butterfly populations are declining due to loss of habitat,” according to Chip Taylor, director of Monarch Watch, a research and support facility at the University of Kansas. “To assure a future for monarchs, conservation and restoration of milkweed needs to become a national priority.” Karen Oberhauser, an entomologist and educator at the University of Wisconsin and director of the UW Arboretum, cites “the risks posed by global climate change and pest control practices to monarch butterflies” as significant factors in the threat to the species. Noting that monarch population numbers are lower than they have been in the past, and that those numbers fluctuate, Oberhauser reiterates Taylor’s point.

“The loss of breeding habitats, areas that have milkweed that the larvae eat and nectar plants that the adults eat also affects the ability of the monarch population to rebound from fluctuations,” she emphasizes. The migration itself is described as a “threatened phenomenon,” due to habitat loss and drought. As a result, some estimates suggest monarch “over wintering” population losses in the tenfold range during the last decade. A 2015 study estimates a 1 billion population drop since 1990. Other factors include predation and car strikes. Not all the news is bad, however. The Mexican habitat, where hundreds of millions of monarchs have spent the winter, was enlarged by the Mexican government to 62 square miles in 1986 and further added to in 2000. And there is great concern and support in the scientific community. Monarch Watch director Taylor has described the 2018 migration as “promising,” with conditions favorable for monarch population growth “better this year than any year since 2001.” Oberhauser’s signature curriculum,

Monarchs in the Classroom, is designed to educate students and teachers on biodiversity, especially as it relates to monarchs. For the rest of us, the website monarchwatch.org offers updated information on monarch activity, support and conservation (like cultivating milkweed) as well as links to other supportive sites, and monarch-butterfly.com details the monarch’s vital information. The 2002 book by Sue Halpern, Four Wings and a Prayer (Penguin Random House), although lacking in current statistics, offers a hands-on, comprehensive overview of the lives of Danaus plexippus, and the efforts to preserve them. By now the bulk of the northeastern monarchs have passed through Central New York on their way home to cluster in the oyamel firs of the Sierra Madres and sleep the winter off. And then begin their annual odyssey once again. A close encounter with a monarch fluttering past on a warm October breeze is an enduring tableau of the change of seasons, and a paradigm for the cyclical nature of their fragile existence. SNT

ART

By Carl Mellor

Neil Shigley with portraits of homeless people Michael (Pastor Shelby), Wayne and Juan: “They have been discarded and forgotten. The portraits provide a doorway into that life.”

LENDING VOICES TO LONELY STREET PEOPLE Over the last 15 years, Neil Shigley has created 40 “Invisible People” portraits, a series of prints intended to acknowledge the humanity of people who are homeless. Each portrait originates with a street encounter in which Shigley talks to a homeless individual, asks permission to take a photo and poses some questions. Some of the conversations are brief; others last for an hour. Shigley, an artist based in San Diego, is showing his work at the ArtRage Gallery. His solo exhibition, Invisible People: Portraits of the Homeless, features 17 pieces that are large, intense and evocative. The subjects include Willie, a veteran who refers to himself as Sergeant Willie; Mark, who talked about his capacity for helping other people on the street; and Dorcie, a 62-year-old woman with a history of 17 years living without a permanent residence. For Bella, a 7-year-old girl, Shigley spoke to her and her mother at a time when they and Bella’s sisters were staying either at shelters or on the streets. They, and other people the artist has spoken to, lead lives where survival is an ongoing struggle and social stigma a con-

10

stant. “They are people who have been discarded and forgotten,” said Shigley. “The portraits provide a doorway into that life.” In discussing the people he’s met, Shigley emphasizes there is no specific reason explaining why they are homeless. Instead, each person has an individual narrative. One man had a workplace accident; he lost his job, income, and ultimately his apartment. Another served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a steelworker before his life disintegrated. Bella’s family fled Los Angeles and moved to San Diego to escape domestic violence. Several individuals have psychiatric problems. To tell their stories, the artist began creating large black-and-white prints that clearly stand out in a gallery space. Most of the prints are at least five feet high; the portrait of Wayne, a 35-year-old man, is more than six feet high. “When these prints are displayed in a gallery, they can’t be ignored,” Shigley said. “I’m trying to make invisible people visible.” The prints reflect Shigley’s fine-art background and a life devoted to art. He teaches art at San Diego State University,

does commercial work for various companies, and has created public art such as a large mural combining several images of Martin Luther King Jr. That mural is located near a San Diego freeway. For him, Invisible People is an ongoing, essential project. He continues to approach homeless people in the neighborhood near his studio, to make portraits and show them. The prints have been exhibited not only in Southern California but also at venues like the National Portrait Gallery, part of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. After Shigley entered a portrait competition, his portrait of Michael, also known as Pastor Shelby, was displayed at the national gallery And from time to time he runs into people who appear in the portraits. He reports that Bella’s family is doing much better. “They broke the cycle,” he said. “They have stable housing, and the kids are in school. Bella’s mom is working.” In addition, Shigley supports several San Diego organizations that provide services for homeless people. Monarch School, for example, serves children who don’t have a permanent home. During a five-day stay in Syracuse, he connected with John Tumino, founder of

In My Father’s Kitchen, a homeless outreach organization that feeds people and also works to link them to services. That group is co-sponsoring the ArtRage exhibit. On Sept. 10, Shigley accompanied Tumino on a day spent traveling around Syracuse. Ultimately, he interviewed and photographed several people; those encounters may lead to portraits in the future. Shigley says that his portraits try to communicate homeless people’s strength and vulnerability, their hopes and pain. “I’ve talked to people who are so lonely,” he said. “They are happy that someone stopped to talk to them.” Invisible People: Portraits of the Homeless is on display through Oct. 27 at ArtRage, 505 Hawley Ave. It’s open Wednesdays through Fridays, 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. In conjunction with the show, on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m., Mark Horvath will discuss the work of Invisible People, a group using video and social media to change the way we think about people experiencing homelessness. Edward Koolakian: “I tend to think of myself as somebody who creates style and will leave it to the individual to determine what their style is.”

CLOTHES ENCOUNTERS Classic threads are always the fashion at Edward Koolakian’s menswear shop in Hanover Square BY WALT SHEPPERD

I

n 1905 George Koolakian opened a tailoring and coat-making shop overlooking the Erie Canal amid a downtown focus of activity including Hanover Square and Clinton Square. Current owner Edward Koolakian, 70, has been on the downtown Syracuse scene since 1970, continuing the family’s tradition that began when George brought Edward’s father and his uncle Haig into the business in the 1920s. Edward’s reflections on that tradition conjure a sense of history, with buildings dating back to the mid-1850s, many even earlier. “As a youngster,” he recalls, “I would come down to my dad’s store in the mid-1950s. One of my first things was the restrooms where the fountain is. Back then it looked like a subway station. One side was ladies’, one side was men’s. It had an arched entry and you would walk downstairs to the bathrooms. It was unusual. You wouldn’t see that in the suburbs. That was

my first impression of Hanover Square.” Edward Koolakian believes there is a future for his business at 132 E. Genesee St., with people who don’t want to have to deal with electronic sales and malls. But he must wait and see about the potential for a family future in the business. Both his son and daughter have careers in other fields. There is a nephew, however, who is still in college and has not dismissed the possibility.

put anything else behind it? Out of style? Then it becomes quick and obsolete.

What determines your style?

I believe my style is predicated on classic clothing that is going to transcend a number of years. Needs to last. Custom garments, I tend to do a lot of suits and sport coats and slacks. Obviously, if you’re spending over $1,000 for a custom suit you don’t want anything that will be in style that year and then I’m going to tell them the following year or two that the suit they bought is out of style.

What will they be spending?

A suit will be $750 or more. Custom is probably $1,200. A suit off the rack probably around $600, $700 or $800.

So much of this is determined by culture. Is there a dominant culture downtown?

The culture is changing. Twenty or 30 years ago it was totally a business cul-

ture. At 5 or 5:30 p.m., it was bye-bye birdie; downtown became deserted. The culture today is driven more by the people that are coming back into Syracuse to live. Younger people, older people. The older people probably want to downsize. An example of that is probably the number of new apartments in the State Tower Building. They may be retired, but they want to live downtown. They don’t want to maintain a yard or have to worry about snow removal.

What is the future of downtown? The future of downtown is the neighborhoods, Hanover Square, Armory Square, the Montgomery Street corridor, Salina Street. There are different components, but I believe the future of downtown is residential, with places for people to be able to dine, recreate, shop. It’s not going to be the 9-to-5 culture we had 25 to 30 years ago when not many people lived downtown. SNT

Sartorial splendor: Koolakian’s Menswear offers snazzy selections of ties, suits and more duds. Michael Davis photos

You spoke of the early days, when there was the Erie Canal and the railroad. Did either of those influence dress and style? Hanover Square and Clinton Square were the first commercial districts. People needed to come into the area to conduct commerce. They needed to dress.

What’s something that hasn’t changed a bit over the years? The square itself is still here. The exact shape, pretty close to what it was way back. Many of the buildings are the same. You can see that from old photographs.

Do you set the trends for local fashions or do you follow them? I’m no slave to fashion as a menswear store. I tend to think of myself as somebody who creates style and will leave it to the individual to determine what their style is. People want something that will have

longevity, and will last in its quality. I don’t consider that fashion. I think fashion is kind of fleeting, here one year, gone the next. My clients tend to be people who want sport coats, suits and dress slacks to last them. That doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t change from one season to the next. If somebody’s a slave to fashion, they could be in the spring of one year and be gone the following spring.

What determines fashion? People who want things that change rapidly. If you look at the runways in Milan and you see some of the new fashions coming through, you’re going to scratch your head and say, “What am I missing? That’s fashion? That seems absurd.” So sometimes fashion can be, in the least sense of the word, something is new and just come in. When I say new, has it transcended anything else? MUSIC By Jessica Novak

The Palace Theatre’s memorial concert for Nick LaVerne (right) will feature music from (clockwise from bottom left) The Trend, the Screaming Meemies and Wallmen. Michael Davis photos

LOCAL ROCKERS UNITE FOR NICK LAVERNE BENEFIT A quintet of area bands will celebrate the memory of Nick LaVerne during a fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 6, 7 p.m., at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St. LaVerne, a local guitarist known for his work with the 1990s-era outfit Screaming Meemies and with the recent Ithaca band Stone Cold Miracle, died March 7 at age 50. The event, titled Loud Love Live for LaVerne, will feature band reunions of the Meemies, Wallmen and The Trend, as well as performances from Stone Cold Miracle and the Gary Frenay-Arty Lenin Band. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. For information, visit https://loudlovelive4laverne.brownpapertickets.com. On Sunday, Oct. 7, 5 to 9 p.m., the bands will reconvene for more musicmaking at Shifty’s, 1401 Burnet Ave. Guitarist Kris Heels was LaVerne’s first cousin, although he considered him more of a brother. “We were close family members and fellow musicians, Yankees fans, Star Wars fans, guitar maniacs,” he says. “He was/is someone I love so dearly and unconditionally. Anyone who knew Nick can attest to his kindness and gentility of spirit. His smile was infectious and his sense of humor and wit was spectacular and universally recognized. He made everyone in the room smile.”

Heels teamed with family members as well as two of LaVerne’s closest friends and former bandmates, James Dower and James DaRin, to organize the event. “The bands that have donated their time are a true testament to how cherished Nick was as a man, musician and fellow human,” Heels says. Although the music will be played in somber memory, “Brace for a rocking set,” warns the New Jersey-based Dower. “In our day the Meemies shared the stage with The Tragically Hip, Primus, Masters of Reality and we played and traveled frequently, gaining fans all over New York state. We were a prolific band.” Wallmen haven’t performed in close to 20 years, so the reunion promises to be a major milestone. “Their music is one of a kind,” Heels says. “They’re amazing and should not be missed.” Local singer-songwriters Frenay and Lenin are well known for their stints in several bands such as The Flashcubes and Screen Test. Dower recalls seeing them on an MTV music-video competition years ago: “They were big time. And they continue to inspire and deliver the goods.” The Trend, a blistering post-punk outfit from the 1980s, will also be celebrating a CD release on the same night. Surviving band members Paul Doherty (drums) and Larry Roux (guitar) will be on hand to conjure those new wave music memories. And Stone Cold Miracle was LaVerne’s last project before his death. As a founding member, LaVerne helped establish the band as a heavy, soulful project with unending energy and intensity.

“He was really elated with how quickly Stone Cold gained a buzz and rose to critical acclaim in and around Ithaca,” Dower says. “We are thrilled that they will deliver a very tasty opening set for us at the Palace.” All of the bands serve as a sonic snapshot of a specific era in the local music scene. “There was an amazing time for independent and alternative music in Central New York from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s,” DaRin says. “There was a whole scene of do-it-yourself bands that wrote highly original music and performed it unapologetically as creative and innovative music, performed in alternative spaces and ultimately they made amazing records. On the night of the benefit, people can come and see a piece of that history and listen.” Proceeds from the event will benefit LaVerne’s wife, Kate, and their 7-year-old son, Benjamin. The bands, food, raffle items and event space at the Palace were also donated for the occasion. “Nick was a truly special person,” DaRin says. “I am moved to do this because the loss has been so great and I know he was not done living and creating music and ultimately he leaves behind a wife and a beautiful son. James, Kris and I started talking about a benefit the week he died. We were so distraught and we were trying to find a way to redirect our grief into something positive. “It has been therapeutic to work on this benefit and we have been willing to do whatever it takes to make this happen. We’re actually considering doing this annually in some capacity.” SNT

BLUE COLLAR DOGGIE DAYCARE

“Seeing dogs thrive in an environment like this and getting along is so great,” says Critter Sitters owner Stephanie Perotti. Michal Davis photo.

WHERE EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY CRITTER SITTERS

In the village of Chittenango, at the end of a long driveway is a brown house near a forest. Parked in the driveway is a van embossed with the faces of dogs frolicking, their tongues hanging out. Next to the garage door is a sign that reads: “Shhhhhh! Crazy Dogs: Do Not Knock! They will bark, slobber will fly, and I will be annoyed.” Welcome to Critter Sitters, which offers pet boarding, daycare, pet transports, and even poop scooping. Owner Stephanie “Critter” Perotti didn’t grow up having dogs, but now she owns five — Serena (“Sissy”), Monarch, Blue, J.J., and Alta — and they follow her everywhere. Perotti opened her business in Syracuse 19 years ago. She had worked in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, but she decided that she wanted to do something that she had always loved. A friend had given her a yellow Lab puppy, whom she named Jordan. It was love at first sight, and Perotti began pet sitting. She bought the property in Chittenango 10 years ago to create a space where dogs could have the time of their lives. There are seven acres of land for up to 60 dogs to roam on and five separate play yards, each with different terrain and toys. Play yard No.

2 is particularly special: It is an enclosed pond, six feet at its deepest, surrounded by decks for the dogs to jump off. “When they come out here to this play yard, we call it ‘pondemonium,’” Perotti says. “They love this yard the best.” There is another play yard that is primarily dirt and structures for the dogs to play on. Perotti did the landscape design herself, all with the dogs in mind. Another play area is called the “namaste zone,” a gravel area where new dogs are first introduced to the pack and where Perotti and her staff of nine bring the dogs to calm them down. “Each yard that we have for them to play in is different. We rotate them based on the amount of activity and what we want to do. I spread them out based on personality and how long we’ve been caring for them,” Perotti says. Another of these play yards includes an in-ground pool, which is used mostly for her personal dogs, small or older dogs, and dogs with injuries. “Watch this,” she says, and throws a ball into the water. Instantly, the dogs charge toward the pool. Perotti’s German shepard, Monarch, launches himself into the water, retrieves the ball, and emerges sopping wet and triumphant. To help pet owners manage their schedules, Critter Sitters has a pick up and

drop off service. “That’s biggest thing that sets us apart. I started my business in Syracuse, and when I moved out here, my clients were not driving out to Chittenango.” Critter Sitters has four cars that shuttle dogs to and from their location, but also to places such as the groomers, the vet, or the trainer. Every member of the staff has been with Perotti for over five years and they do everything the business requires, from leading the pack, to cleaning up after the dogs, mowing the property, changing water or food, or scheduling. “I was not allowed to have a dog growing up. My parents said no, that they would end up taking care of it, which is so true,” Perotti says. Nevertheless, her passion for dogs was evident. “There were little things along the way. I was always buying dog books at those school book fairs. Dogs that people couldn’t get near I always had a special knack with.” In the end, Perotti has found herself surrounded by dogs, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. “Just seeing dogs thrive in an environment like this and all getting along is so great, which is something that people can’t even do sometimes. The trust and loyalty the dogs have for me and my staff is amazing. What’s cool is that we take

Jim and Debbie Miller have been married for 29 years and dogs were not always in the picture for them. Jim was in the Air Force and their family moved around a lot. “It’s easier to move with a cat,” Debbie says. “As we were starting a family, we had a few dogs on occasion, but it was hard because we moved so much. I’m from Syracuse and when we moved back here we looked into getting a dog that would fit our lifestyle.” Eventually, they settled on the Rhodesian Ridgeback. They have two, Khala and Shiva. Debbie says, “We did research on breeds and found a breed that fit into our family, not just going and finding one that we thought was cute. You don’t want to have that realization that what that dog was bred to do doesn’t fit with your family.” In December 2017, Jim and Debbie were informed that the daycare facility their dogs attended would be closing. Khala and Shiva were going to need a new day home. Their breed can become destructive if they get bored or don’t have enough exercise. Debbie was doing research on other facilities, but the costs were high. She said to her husband, “Well, what are we going to do?” Jim’s response: “What would it take to open one ourselves?” That’s all it took. On Jan. 1 they helped close the former dog facility. The owner didn’t need a lot of his supplies, and he offered to let the pair take what he wasn’t using. Jim and Debbie then created Blue Collar Doggie Daycare, found their location, and opened March 1. Blue Collar Doggie Daycare is located near 690 at the corner of Thompson Road NEXT PAGE

One was the actual physical location. It doesn’t take people out of their way. The other thing is that the building itself is located in the village of East Syracuse and they are amazing to get permits and to get the authority to be here. Because of our urgency to open, that was important,” Debbie says. The name of the business is a nod to Jim’s Air Force days as well as a hint at their mission. Debbie says, “The blue collar came up partly because we want to be for people who can afford it. We don’t want to charge a lot or make it unaffordable for people because we care so much about the dogs and we want the dogs to be here.”

SYRACUSENEWTIMES.COM Customers can earn a free day of daycare for themselves when they refer a friend who becomes a paying customer. Blue Collar offers an array of services including obedience training, boarding, daycare, and service or therapy dog training. Prices are $10 for nail trimming; $15 for vaccinations; $30 for grooming; and several daycare packages, which range from $16 for a half-day, to a 20 full-day package for $440. The business averages around 20 dogs in care a day. Both Jim and Debbie agree that education is imperative for people considering adopting a pet. “When thinking about getting a dog, you have to ask yourself: What do I want the dog for?” Jim says. “One of the reasons we do training is to help people who adopted a dog and it may not act the way they want it to act,” Debbie continues. “We can help educate

them on the breed, we help educate them on how to get the dog to do what the owner wants, whether it’s basic obedience, or to be a service dog, so that hopefully it helps to keep dogs from shelters. We don’t want people rehoming their dog because it’s not working for them. If we can help them and train the dog properly, then everybody’s happy and dogs stay in homes.” They are also one of a hundred retailers for a company called I Heart Dogs, which donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of their products to provide food and toys to shelters as well as help to pair veterans with service dogs. The retail section includes gifts for dogs as well as owners. Their selection includes jewelry, wine glasses, coffee cups, and greeting cards, pet vitamins, as well as products from a local crafter who makes pet beds and clothes. There is even a section specifically for products a service dog may require. The dogs in care have 5,500 square feet indoors to run and play, with an additional outside play area, the door to which is left open when the weather is nice so that the dogs can come and go as they please. Inside is a sizeable doggy jungle-gym that even a fully grown Great Dane can romp on. Outside, there is a kiddie pool, a bench, a tire, and toys galore. One of the Millers’ Rhodesian Ridgebacks lounges on one of many mats where the dogs can relax during the day. Additionally, the Millers have four cameras set up so their customers can log on anytime and watch the dogs play. Jim and Debbie’s office sits at the back of the play area, where they can keep an eye on the animals. “Having them all around you and wanting to be pet and kissed, it’s just the best,” Debbie says. “The dogs are my favorite part.” Jim agrees. “You can have a bad day at work and come here and hang out with the dogs, and after a while it’s like, ‘All right, that’s enough loving. I’m good!’” Blue Collar Doggie Daycare, 3101 Erie Blvd E., is open Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information, call (315) 907-3454 or visit bluecollardog giedaycare.com. SNT

by Rob Brezsny tion-packed story written by ancient Greek playwright Sophocles. It features epic characters taking drastic action in response to extreme events. In contrast to that text is Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time, which draws from the sensitive author’s experiences growing up, coming of age, and falling in love, all the while in quest for meaning and beauty. Author Virginia Woolfe compared the two works, writing, “In six pages of Proust we can find more complicated and varied emotions than in the whole of the Electra.” In accordance with astrological omens, I recommend that you specialize in the Proustian mode rather than the Sophoclean. Your feelings in the next five weeks could be as rich and interesting and educational as they have been in a long time. Honor them!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Researchers in

Maryland have created a new building material with a strength-to-weight ratio that’s eight times better than steel. It’s an effective insulator, and in some forms can be bent and folded. Best of all, it’s biodegradable and cost-effective. The stuff is called nanowood, and is derived from lightweight, fast-growing trees like balsa. I propose that we make it your main metaphor for the foreseeable future. Why? Because I think you’re primed to locate or create your own version of a flexible, durable, robust building block.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) The U.S. secretary of defense paid an official visit to Indonesia early this year. The government arranged for him to observe soldiers as they demonstrated how tough and well-trained they were. Some of the troops shimmied through broken glass, demolished bricks with their heads, walked through fire, and bit heads off snakes. I hope you won’t try stunts like that in the coming weeks, Gemini. It will be a favorable time for you show off your skills and make strong impressions. You’ll be wise to impress important people with how creative and resourceful you are. But there’s no need to try too hard or resort to exaggeration. CANCER (June 21-July 22) i confess that i

have a fuzzy self-image. With odd regularity, i don’t seem to know exactly what or who i am. For example, i sometimes think i’m so nice and polite that i need to toughen up. But on other occasions i feel my views are so outrageous and controversial that i should tone myself down. Which is true? Often, i even neglect to capitalize the word “i.” You have probably experienced some of this fuzziness, my fellow Cancerian. But you’re now in a favorable phase to cultivate a more definitive self-image. Here’s

Continued from page 21 a helpful tip: We Cancerians have a natural talent for inspiring people to love us. This ability will come in especially handy as we work on making an enduring upgrade from i to I. Our allies’ support and feedback will fuel our inner efforts to clarify our identity.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) “I am a little afraid of

love, it makes me rather stupid.” So said author Simone de Beauvoir in a letter she wrote to her lover, Nelson Algren. I’m happy to let you know, Leo, that during the next 12 months, love is likely to have the opposite effect on you. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, it will tend to make you smarter and more perceptive. To the degree that you expand your capacity for love, you will become more resilient and a better decision-maker. As you get the chance to express love with utmost skill and artistry, you will awaken dormant potentials and boost your personal power.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your theme in the

coming weeks is the art of attending to details. But wait! I said “the art.” That means attending to details with panache, not with overly meticulous fussing. For inspiration, meditate on St. Francis Xavier’s advice: “Be great in little things.” And let’s take his thought a step further

with a quote from author Richard Shivers: “Be great in little things, and you will be given opportunity to do big things.” Novelist Tom Robbins provides us with one more nuance: “When we accept small wonders, we qualify ourselves to imagine great wonders.”

a service like this near where you live, Scorpio. The next two weeks will be a perfect time to relieve pent-up worry and sadness and anxiety through cathartic rituals like crying. What other strategies might work for you?

friendly feelers! Sling out interesting invitations! Figure out how to get noticed for all the right reasons! Make yourself so interesting that no one can resist your proposals! Use your spunky riddle-solving powers to help ease your tribe’s anxieties. Risk looking odd if that will make you smarter! Plunk yourself down in pivotal places where vitality is welling up! Send out telepathic beams that say, “I’m ready for sweet adventure. I’m ready for invigorating transformation!”

Neil deGrasse Tyson offers this observation: “When you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. [But] the most successful people in life recognize that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation.” I think Tyson’s simple wisdom is exactly what you need to hear right now, Libra. You’re primed for a breakthrough in your ability to create your own fate.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Japanese entre-

preneur Hiroki Terai has created a business that offers crying therapy. His clients watch short videos specially formulated to make them weep. A professional helper is on hand to gently wipe their tears away and provide comforting words. “Tears have relaxing and healing effects,” says an Okinawan musician who works as one of the helpers. Hiroki Terai adds, “It has been said that one drop of tear has the effect of relieving stress for a week.” I wish there were

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) “Someone

spoke to me last night, told me the truth,” writes poet Doeianne Laux. “I knew I should make myself get up, write it down, but it was late, and I was exhausted from working. Now I remember only the flavor.” I offer these thoughts, Capricorn, in the hope that they’ll help you avoid Laux’s mistake. I’m quite sure that crucial insights and revelations will be coming your way, and I want you to do whatever’s necessary to completely capture them so you can study and meditate on them at length.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) As a young man,

Aquarian poet Louis Dudek struck up a correspondence with renowned poet Ezra Pound, who was 32 years older. Dudek “admired him immensely,” and “loved him for the joy and the luminosity” of his poetry, but also resented him “for being so magnificent.” With a mix of mischief and adulation, Dudek wrote a poem to his hero. It included these lines: “For Christ’s sake, you didn’t invent sunlight. There was sun dazzle before you. But you talk as if you made light or discovered it.” I hope his frisky tone might inspire you to try something similar with your own idols. It would be healthy to be more playful and lighthearted about anything or anyone you take too seriously or give enormous power to.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) In his book Till We

Have Faces, C.S. Lewis writes, “Holy places are dark places. It is life and strength, not knowledge and words, that we get in them. Holy wisdom is not clear and thin like water, but thick and dark like blood.” In that spirit, and in accordance with astrological omens, I suggest you seek out dark holy places that evoke wonder and reverence, even awe. Hopefully, you will be inspired thereby to bring new beauty into your life. You’ll be purged of trivial concerns and become receptive to a fresh promise from your future life.
