After several mail bombs were sent to a hit list of Democrats across the United States and 11 Jewish people were shot and killed in a Pennsylvania synagogue, some are wondering whether there should be a domestic terrorism law on the books like there is for international terrorism. The absence of a clear-cut law leads prosecutors to go after a hodge-podge of other related charges and leaves no way to track trends in quantity or outcome, reported the Associated Press. People who favor the idea also say white supremacists and others who kill for ideology should “get the same terrorism label as Islamic State group supporters.” However, others worry that in our current political climate, the label — and the tools used along with it, like communications monitoring — could be abused based on movements the government does not support or infringe on people’s civil liberties. Do you think there should be some sort of domestic terrorism law? Take this week’s poll, and view last week’s results at www.syracusenewtimes.com.

The Oct. 25 exhibition game between the Syracuse University men’s basketball squad and the College of Saint Rose at the Carrier Dome went pretty much the way Orange faithful would expect, with SU on top 80-49. But there was a Fayetteville freshman on the team that garnered some attention: guard Buddy Boeheim, the son of Orange coach Jim Boeheim (far right). The younger Boeheim joins an impressive roster that also includes forwards Marek Dolezaj (lower right) and Elijah Hughes (bottom left), as well as fellow guard Tyus Battle (below) and center Paschal Chukwu (right). The Orange has another exhibition tune-up at the Dome on Wednesday, Oct. 31, for a Halloween contest with Le Moyne College.

Onondaga Small Business Development Center Helps Local Entrepreneurs Launch Businesses Have you ever been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, dreamed of being your own boss, have a business you’d like to buy or start — but don’t know where to begin? Onondaga Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is the place to go. Onondaga SBDC is a group of seasoned business professionals based in Central New York that provides aspiring entrepreneurs with high-quality business consultations and workshops with services such as choosing the correct legal structure, performing market research, developing a business plan, creating a financial plan, seeking financing, crafting a marketing plan, hiring employees, setting prices and conducting business operations. SBDC provides this to both start-up and existing businesses at NO COST in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego and Seneca counties. Mike and Cindi Fowler had a dream to start their own preschool in Liverpool. He was a landscaper and former pharmacist; she was an educator with special needs teaching experience. They found SBDC through recommendations from friends and business acquaintances who encouraged them to reach out for advice. They described their vision to
SBDC consultant Melissa Zomro Davis, who helped them develop the concept, draft a business plan and find a developer to construct a building. Current plans call for the Fowlers to start construction with Builder/Developer VIP Structures on True North Children’s Center, a 15,000-square-foot, 12-classroom preschool in Liverpool during the fourth quarter of 2018. According to Mike, they received valuable information from SBDC: “They supported the idea from the beginning and encouraged us every step of the way while directing us to the resources we needed to make a successful plan. SBDC helped us to create a workable business plan so we could acquire the financial resources. Their services are highly recommended.” Charlie Preuss, a retired veteran, imagined a concept to create virtual reality/video conferencing software specifically for project management in the construction industry. His idea was to develop a solution where a construction project could be built in virtual reality with people collaborating remotely that would allow everyone to see all aspects of the project on one screen and to anticipate and resolve

design conflicts before they arose on the job site. He met Mike Cartini from SBDC while he was trying to start his business from the Tech Garden, a small business incubator space in downtown Syracuse. Mike provided resources to perform market research on the viability of the business, and also helped create a pricing model and develop a launch plan. Today Imajion is a veteran-owned business with four employees that has been in operation for two years. They have raised more than $1.5 million in private investment to fund the growth. Charlie sees a bright future for the software. He credits Cartini’s input and ongoing market research, which provided access to high-quality research data that he would never have been able to find or afford on his own. Cartini’s help also allowed Charlie to conserve time and financial resources so he could concentrate on the launch of the business. What are you waiting for? KATKO-BALTER CONGRESS CHALLENGE DRAWS NEAR
F
our years ago, Central New York prosecutor John Katko was swept into Congress as part of an election in which the GOP won its largest majority in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1928. After he beat Democratic incumbent Dan Maffei by 20 points, Katko insisted he would be an independent and bipartisan voice for New York’s 24th Congressional District on Capitol Hill. “We deserve better for this district and we deserve better for this country than what we have,” Katko said during his victory speech. “Both sides of the aisle. It is not just a Republican thing and not just a Democrat thing.” Four years later, Katko is counting on that same image to keep him afloat in what many forecast to be a Democratic wave in next week’s midterms. But while he faces a convincing challenge from Democratic opponent Dana Balter, Katko is really fighting a twofront war: Balter and the Democrats on one side and members of his own party on the other. Katko, who represents Onondaga, Cayuga, Wayne and part of Oswego counties, has not held back his criticism of Republican-controlled Washington. He has said that he did not vote for Donald Trump for president, instead writing in U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s name. Katko openly blames the extreme conservative wing of the GOP for stonewalling bipartisan legislation in the House on major issues like immigration and infrastructure. And he voted against some of the party’s most controversial bills that have been at the top of President Trump’s priority list: the effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act; the 2018 Farm Bill because of its proposed cuts to food stamps; and Trump’s 2018 budget resolution. “I love my party and I believe in fiscal conservatism and I believe in smaller government,” Katko said during a CNYCentral town hall in 2017. “But I also believe there is a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things and that’s why I voted the way I did on that healthcare bill.” Katko co-chairs the Tuesday Group, made up of 50 moderate House Repub-
6
licans who counter the more conservative House Freedom Caucus. He is also a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, an evenly divided group of Democrats and Republicans seeking bipartisan cooperation on issues. He has been consistently ranked as one of Congress’ most bipartisan members; the Lugar Center ranks him seventh out of all 435 legislators. Katko handily defeated his Democratic rival Colleen Deacon in 2016. In a district that leans Democratic, Katko managed to come out of 2016 as one of just 23 Republicans in the entire nation who won in a district that voted for Hillary Clinton for president. But don’t be fooled by this in-yourface independence, Dana Balter argues, because Katko is as reliable a Republican vote as any other. One of Balter’s favorite points is that Katko votes with President Trump 90 percent of the time. That’s according to FiveThirtyEight, which takes into account Katko’s frequency of breaking with his own party, if that tells you anything about how partisan Washington is these days. While Balter labels Katko’s healthcare vote and others as a politically calculated one, she reminds us that he supported the Republican tax plan, which includes reversing the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act, which renders the landmark law moot. Balter points out that Katko, who says he believes climate change is real and that humans contribute to it, voted to repeal an Obama-era coal mining regulation meant to protect waterways from mining remnants. He also supported repealing two regulations Democrats fought fiercely to protect: internet privacy rules that block service providers from using individuals’ data for ad-
10.31.18 - 11.6.18 | syracusenew times.com
vertising purposes, and rolling back financial stipulations on big banks that were put in place after the 2008 financial crisis. Balter has also ridiculed Katko for hosting local visits from prominent Republicans this year, including Vice President Mike Pence, Ivanka Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan. “It shows voters very clearly that John Katko stands with Paul Ryan,” Balter recently said. “And Paul Ryan’s agenda, which he is very open about, is to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.” If Balter wants to win, her task is to
bring under her umbrella the quarter of registered Democrats who voted for Katko two years ago, since most traditional Democrats will vote for her anyway. If Katko wants to win, he has to keep those Democratic voters and reassure his more conservative voters that his splits with the president or his party leadership don’t alienate them. Will Katko’s moderate image help him survive in the tumultuous era of Donald Trump and a Republican Congress? Or will Balter have the message, timing and luck that propel her to victory just like it did her opponent four years ago? Stay tuned. SNT

DEAD HEAT REFLECTS DIVIDED DISTRICT IN TENNEY-BRINDISI SHOWDOWN Rep. Claudia Tenney won her first congressional term in 2016 just 5 percent ahead of her Democratic opponent Kim Myers. Amid a closely watched contest punctuated with bitter personal and partisan jabs, a recent poll put the 22nd Congressional District’s Republican incumbent 1 percent behind Democrat Anthony Brindisi. Nine percent of voters are undecided, according to a Spectrum News/Syracuse.com/Siena College poll released Oct. 24. “This is a district that is as closely divided as it can be about whether or not to reelect its freshman Republican representative,” Steve Greenberg, a spokesman for the Siena College Research Institute, said in a press release. The survey was conducted Oct. 15 to 18 by telephone calls in English to 501 likely 22nd District voters. This poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.7 percentage points. The October results (46 percent to 45 percent) echo those of an Aug. 29 poll, with Brindisi leading 46-44. “While the campaign, the ads and the attacks have been heated over the last eight weeks, the reaction by voters has been muted, as voters appear to be locked in with little change in their views since August,” Greenberg said in the release. “The race was virtually dead even in August and it’s virtually dead even today. Brindisi has become a little better known and still has a positive favorability rating. Tenney’s favorability is exactly the same as it was in August.” As of last week, Politico and the Cook Political Report called the race a tossup. The district covers all of Madison, Oneida, Cortland and Chenango counties and part of Oswego, Broome, Herkimer and Tioga counties. Within its borders lie Colgate University (Tenney’s alma mater), SUNY Cortland and Remington Arms. Tenney, 57, of New Hartford, represented the 101st Assembly District from 2011 to 2017. She lost a congressional bid to incumbent Richard L. Hanna in the 2014 primary by 6 points. She is a single parent whose son is a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Brindisi, 39, of Utica, has represented New York’s 119th Assembly District since a September 2011 special election. He previously served on the Utica School Board and practiced as an attorney. He and his wife, Erica, have two children. The state Board of Elections listed about 127,700 active registered Democrats and about 158,600 active registered Republicans. Another 23,000 people are registered as Independent, and more than 80,000 voters are not affiliated with a party. Donald Trump’s unanticipated 2016 win over Hillary Clinton warns against forecasting election results. And election trends highlight the district’s unpredictability. Within reliably blue New York state, Trump beat Clinton by nearly 16 percentage points in the district. But in 2008 and 2012, the district — by a hair — voted for Barack Obama. President Trump, first kids Eric Trump and Ivanka and outgoing Speaker of the House Paul Ryan have visited the district stumping for Tenney. In August, Ivanka Trump joined Tenney at Suit-Kote, a Cortland asphalt company, where the two touted the benefits of Trump’s tax cuts. “(Tenney) is incredible: She voted for tax cuts,” Eric Trump said, according to the Utica Observer-Dispatch account of an Oct. 23 visit to Tenney’s New Hartford campaign headquarters. “Look at our country, we’re winning at absolutely everything we do,” Eric Trump said. The 100 or so Tenney supporters at the event ate it up, according to the Observer-Dispatch account. A few days earlier, Hanna, a moderate Republican who represented the 22nd District from 2011 to 2017, endorsed Brindisi. (He endorsed Clinton in 2016.) The New York Times also endorsed Brindisi, calling him “hard-working, refreshingly earnest and moderate.” Former President Obama did not endorse in the 22nd District. Brindisi supports abortion rights and said Tenney’s May 2017 vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) influenced his decision to run for Congress. The American Health Care Act would
have eliminated the ACA’s individual mandate and removed federal protections for pre-existing conditions. Brindisi earned an A from the National Rifle Association (NRA) after he voted against Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2013 gun control legislation. He supports expanded background checks and other gun safety legislation, and the NRA recently lowered his grade to an F. Tenney retains an A from the NRA. The Times said Tenney “has wrapped herself around Trump-style politics.” Following the Parkland, Florida, school shooting Feb. 14, for example, Tenney said in a Feb. 21 interview on Albany’s Talk 1300 Radio that “so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats.” Her March 21 claim on Utica’s Talk of the Town program on WUTQ-FM 100.7 that the “Deep State” was to blame for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development’s Ben Carson’s $31,000 furniture drew Jimmy Kimmel’s mocking. Earlier last month, Tenney’s campaign issued a memo widely interpreted as alluding to organized crime and criticizing Brindisi’s Italian heritage. The memo said Brindisi has “used political connections to get away with violence, intimidation, and thuggish behavior for years.” Tenney said she did not send the memo, which was obtained by The New York Post. The candidates continued sparring in an Oct. 25 Spectrum News debate filled with interruptions and nasty asides on issues including health care, tariffs, FEMA and immigration. Tenney blasted the ACA, saying. “It’s not working. It’s a tragedy. It’s a disaster” that’s hurting small business owners. She said she supports
coverage for pre-existing conditions “in a way that doesn’t soak the taxpayers.” She criticized Brindisi for supporting single-payer health care. He said single payer is “right for New York right now,” but not on a national level. He said he supports fixing the ACA, which “is not working because of the constant two-year attack by people like Tenney.” Tenney called Brindisi “a chameleon, somebody that has a far-left voting record” and will side with Rep. Nancy Pelosi. “The people I care about are the people in this district; those are my bosses,” Brindisi countered. “That’s who I’m going to listen to after I’m elected.” “In the final days we will continue to make sure voters understand the clear choice in this race,” said Tenney campaign manager Raychel Renna. “A vote for Claudia Tenney is a vote for President Trump’s agenda that is cutting taxes for working families, helping family farms and supporting our veterans. A vote for Anthony Brindisi is a vote for Nancy Pelosi’s gun-grabbing agenda and socialist health care plan that would end Medicare as we know it.” “This district has a history of electing members of Congress from both parties who can be independent and focus on the needs of upstate New York,” Brindisi said. “I’m going to continue meeting with voters to make this case. While the other side is relying on super PACs, our campaign has one of the best grassroots volunteer teams in the country who will knock on over 100,000 doors across the district to talk to voters and turn out as many people as possible.” SNT Renée K. Wild fantasies: Meghan Lees, Jade Miori, Megan Hill, Danie Merrill and Michael O’Sullivan in Le Moyne College’s She Kills Monsters.
FROM SPOOKY SAWTOOTHS TO DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS For Baldwinsville Theatre Guild’s production of Dracula (running through Saturday, Nov. 3), the first task for director Korrie Taylor is to create a sense of the noxious undead, creepy horror and imminent threat — in a family-friendly venue like Baldwinsville Presbyterian Education Center. Taylor starts with spooky scenery from set designer Josh Taylor, haunting, offstage noises like baying hounds from sound designer Sean Connolly, and plenty of dark, barely-see-yourhand lighting effects. Then she has a full-bearded Dan Rowlands, sporting a calm Masterpiece Theatre accent, tearing off his formal wear and turning into the raving, bug-eating maniac Renfield, scaring the bejesus out of the first five rows. It’s Rowlands’ most dazzling performance ever and still packs a punch more than two hours later. Steven Dietz’s 1996 version of Dracula cleans away all the inadvertent campiness of the Hamilton Deane-John L. Balderson 1927 stage show, which
8
formed the basis of the 1931 Bela Lugosi movie classic. This version gets back to the tone of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, going so far as to quote lines from it. The second task, both for Taylor and producer Colin Keating, is to reinvent the familiar. Scarcely any member of the audience will enter without knowing many elements of the drama, from neck bites to garlic. A simultaneous set speeds the action so that we see lover Jonathan Harker (Corey Hopkins) composing letters in Transylvania on an upper stage; meanwhile, two lovelies, his intended Mina (Julia Jeremko) and her red-haired pal Lucy (Alyssa Otoski-Keim), read them in England on a lower stage. Not a moment is lost to set changes in a narrative that spans a dozen locations. Keating, together with costumers Heather Jensen and Kate Kisselstein, pull out the stops to give the show an upmarket feel, with deadly swords, suits of armor for Count Dracula’s castle, and a splendid anti-vampire cross that bursts into flame on cue.
10.31.18 - 11.6.18 | syracusenew times.com
While much of the drama is physical, such as driving stakes through hearts, the appeal of Dracula relies extensively on excellent voices, starting with veteran player Trevor Hill in the title role. He has fewer lines than other characters, so he has to make them all matter. Yes, he has an accent but it’s never exaggerated. His opposite number is the hyper-articulate Simon Moody as Prof. Van Helsing, the embodiment of enlightenment. His implied subtext is often stronger than his dialogue. Newcomer Jaremko makes a smashing debut as Mina, the character with the widest shading of color, and Otoski-Keim as Lucy is unrecognizable from her previous roles. And Michael Richard King convinces as Dr. John Seward, the rejected lover who knows what’s what. Psychological thrills are resurrected from a character’s haunted past in The Piano Teacher, running through Sunday, Nov. 4, at Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre. “He hated children: That’s why we didn’t have any,” says Mrs. K, the title character in Julia Cho’s drama. Mrs. K (played by Beth Dixon) is speaking of her late husband, whose name is never given; they were married 36 years, and he’s been dead for some time.
In Mrs. K’s rambling but obviously needy opening monologue, she breaks through the fourth wall to offer the audience some cookies. A guy in the first row accepts. These are all devices to disarm us from preparing for the shocking secrets to be revealed. In an empty boast about her former students (one won a geography bee), we notice that not one is a musician. So what happened to all those pupils after all these years, she wonders. What lessons did they take from her? She begins to call, using one of those sturdy, once ubiquitous Western Electric tabletop cradles, upon which the phone itself can be slammed in disgust. Her first attempt reaches a somewhat distracted Mary Fields (Amelia Windom), who is amiable enough but holds back a greater emotion. When coaxed she agrees to come for a visit. Subsequent calls veer into the ugly, from rude responses to hang-ups. At last the veneer of the bland teacher from the “suburb among suburbs” is punctured and she lets loose with the four-syllabled m-bomb. In shame, Mrs. K puts her hand to her mouth and asks, “What would my husband say if he heard that?” Her second student, the insinuating, snarly Michael (Matthew J. Harris), might not have needed a call. Was he waiting in a car across the street? A close observer, he tells Mrs. K what she had been struggling to forget. When The Piano Teacher opened off-Broadway in 2007, playing the role of Mrs. K won a host of plaudits for Elizabeth Franz, who has also been a Syracuse Stage favorite. Mrs. K has perhaps 80 percent of the lines, travels the longest arc, and carries the most emotional weight. For the Kitchen show, Beth Dixon brings a lengthy list of credits, including Broadway. Yet as craftily directed by Diego Arciniegas, she speaks so rapidly and softly we can barely catch the details. Emily Woods Hogue’s costuming puts Mrs. K in a baggy, rayon housedress, possibly purchased during the Carter administration. Experienced playgoers know that this is like exposition at the beginning of an Agatha Christie mystery, deliberately unemphatic. One of these banal items will rise up to bite. Surprises are more abundant than

shocks for She Kills Monsters, performed by Le Moyne College students in a Boot and Buskin Drama Club production (running through Saturday, Nov. 3). In his curtain speech director and theater program head Matt Chiorini announced that Qui Nguyen’s She Kills Monsters is far and away the biggest production of the 19 he has overseen since arriving at Le Moyne. Costumer Lindsey Voorhees and set designer Karel Blakeley have conjured up waves of eye-catching surprises, but just how big Monsters is does not become evident until the last 15 minutes. More importantly, Monsters connects local audiences with the edgy, New York City contemporary theater scene as no other company has. Vietnamese American Qui Nguyen is playwright-in-residence with Brooklyn’s ultra-hip Vampire Cowboys, the company that helped produce She Kills Monsters at TriBeCa’s Flea Theater in 2011. The “monsters” of the title are a tip-off to the play’s nominal subject, Dungeons and Dragons and role-playing with mythical identities. Unusual for any college production, the show’s program includes a color insert with advertisements for local entrepreneurs and clubs. Admittedly, audience members who arrive with the D&D definition of “module” in mind begin with advantages of those who do not. But that’s a little like saying Anglo-Catholics begin with an advantage on the Narnia stories. You can enter without joining.
The principal character in Monsters is the drab-looking teacher Agnes (Meghan Lees, dressed to look older), who probes the notebooks of her recently deceased 15-year-old sister Tilly (Megan Hill), who was killed in a car crash. As a D&D player, Tilly had created an alternative role as Tillius the Palladin, appearing in an alluring costume. Uninitiated, Agnes always wears the same costume as she enters into the fantastical. Agnes’ initial A is more important than her name itself because it links her to Lewis Carroll’s Alice, as she goes down a rabbit hole and through a looking glass at the same time. The time is the pre-digital year of 1995, and the setting is Athens, Ohio. Because Athens is an ancient name with mythological links, we can forget that the town is the seat of Ohio University. And Ohio is the state most associated with normality; think Bye, Bye Birdie. Agnes’ entry is through a comic book dealer, Chuck (Jean-Luc Saliva), where she meets exotic roles created by Tilly’s pals Lillith (Danie Merrill) and Kalliope (Jade Miori), as well as the horned jokester Orcus (Michael O’Sullivan). Bullying cheerleaders turn into canine-toothed predators Gabby (Celina Rescott) and Tina (Morgan Smith). Sparkling dialogue accompanies the visual abundance, with a tart-talking counselor (Samantha Overton) and a scowling fairy named Farrah (Samantha Lee), who comments “Why should I be nice? I’m not Canadian.” SNT

State St. This year’s event is being held in memory of Mary T. Schoeneck, daughter of the not-forprofit’s founder and executive director Therese Schoeneck, and in honor of Wegmans. The evening kicks off a year of celebrating the organization’s 40th anniversary of providing comfort, compassion and services to the bereaved of the local community and beyond.
10
Headquartered at 4500 Onondaga Blvd., Hope for Bereaved is dedicated to helping grieving children, teens and adults by providing services such as support groups, counseling and monthly newsletters, all free of charge. Proceeds from the annual dinner help pay for these services; the organization does not receive annual institutional funding from any source. “We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the celebration,” wrote a 2017 attendee in a note to Hope for Bereaved. “It was a wonderful time with an awesome silent auction and dinner. What a great way to support the much-needed services they provide.” Like every parent who has grieved the death of their child, so has Therese Schoeneck. Forty-one years ago on Aug. 21, 1977, her daughter Mary, age 21, was killed in a car accident. “I didn’t think we would survive or ever be happy again,” recalled Schoeneck. “If there had been a support group anywhere in the state, I would have attended.” But there were none at that time. She, her husband David, and Mary’s brothers and sisters were forced to find other ways to cope with grief and carry on. The following year, as Schoeneck and her family faced another holiday season, she decided to hold a meeting for other parents grieving the deaths of their children. The parents asked to meet again and Hope for Bereaved was born. “It is heartwarming to hear the bereaved reflect ‘how helpful, even life-saving’ Hope is,” Schoeneck said. Hope for Bereaved’s 2018 goal is to expand its support, services and outreach to the bereaved, with emphasis on helping grieving youth, and to financially solidify Hope for decades to come. 10.31.18 - 11.6.18 | syracusenew times.com
Community chairs Jeffrey and Dorothy Booher and the Celebration of Hope committee members have planned a special evening with music, dancing, raffles and a live and silent auction. Among the items to be auctioned: seven days in Acapulco, an overnight stay at Mirbeau Inn & Spa, and a composite ruby and diamond pendant. WSYR-Channel 9 news anchor Dan Cummings will serve as master of ceremonies and auctioneer. Hope for Bereaved will continue to accept donated items or themed baskets for the silent auction. These items may be donated in honor or in memory of a loved one, and may include a short write-up and photo. Items or baskets should be at least a $40 value; gift certificates should be a minimum of $25. Ideas include art, children’s items, home decor, holiday decorations, jewelry, sports and gift certificates for golf, hotels and restaurants. Admission is $125. The Benny Bunch Mayor Ben Walsh’s new administration members pump fresh air into the old system

n politics, they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Witness Syracuse’s 2017 mayoral election, which began, some who were there insist, with an unconventional announcement in a black barbershop, without the generally accepted clamor, without an inch of ink to document the effort as real. The Democrats, with Juanita Perez Williams at 9,701, wondered where their city’s overwhelming numbers had gone. Eyebrows were also raised at Laura Lavine’s Republican low of 673 behind the Green Party’s Howie Hawkins at 1,017. Joe Nicoletti had not campaigned, but logged 305 on the Working Families line. While so many things seemed to be changing, a sameness had emerged: a member of a prominent political power family sitting in the Big Chair. His early moves have brought a calm to the transition, team building, trash pickups and a search for staff people appropriate to the current challenges, with more developments on the way. Given the final number, however, the 35 percent of registered voters who turned out on Election Day 2017, his biggest challenge may be getting people to believe that the system can work. NEXT PAGE

Ironically, the effort was mounted by a member of one of the area’s prominent political families, whose consistency produced a mayor and two congressional representatives, leading eventually to the current City Hall residency of Ben Walsh. His path to the Big Chair, however, could never have been predicted by those who preceded him. The still-new mayor recalls the encounter, which he describes as a social drop-in on North Salina Street, but notes that it occurred well after the formal announcement of his campaign. The location has significance, however, as the site of the taping of a television campaign commercial. In terms of electoral experience the most major change, from first glimpse of the ballot, was Ben Walsh listed twice, but neither name on the Republican line. Oddsmakers had just begun to sense the quiet momentum his candidacy was building, but his final 13,584 tally moved many of those surprised closer to shock.

DIVERSE WORKS AT DOWLING CENTER’S WEEKEND OPEN HOUSE One of the season’s first holiday-time exhibits takes place this weekend during an open house at the Dowling Art Center, 1632 Hawley Ave. The mid-size group show has a roster of 20 artists and diverse media ranging from Kathy Dolbear’s baskets to Ryan McCammons’ photos and bowls and vases created by Susan Borker. And it encompasses Terry Cameron’s mixed-media pieces, prints and photographs collected by John Dowling and Mark Topp’s landscapes, cityscapes and portraits. Beyond that, the show features artists in various stages of their careers. For Wendy Harris, this has been a busy autumn. Aside from the Dowling Center, she’s also taking part in exhibitions at the Clayton Art Center, near the St. Lawrence River; at the Imagine Gallery in Skaneateles; and at Auburn’s Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center. In the Dowling exhibit, Harris will showcase a slew of small abstract pieces, a large floral painting, and several pastel landscapes. Robert Glisson will display his distinctive landscapes. Among other things, he interprets a landscape by drastically accentuating color. He’s shown his work at local venues, at the Allentown Art Festival in Buffalo, at galleries in Corning, and at the Alden Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Stacey Pope taught art in public schools for more than 30 years. In retirement, she’s focused more on creating artworks. This summer, she won a firstENTER TO WIN BY prize award at the Sackets Harbor Plein Tuesday 25 @herNoon Air Festival. Sept. At Dowling, paintings will include a night view of the marina within that harbor. Penelope Rakov has taught classes in ceramics, pottery and glass blowing, but is best known for her glassworks, particularly rings and necklaces. During November, she will be artist-in-residence at the Corning Museum of Glass. Because this is a holiday-time exhibition, several artists will display pieces that aren’t part of their primary body of work. James Skvarch, for example, has
created many etchings, including fine works referencing architectural subjects. The exhibit will hang both etchings and his oils depicting scenes at Pompey Hills and Otisco Lake. Similarly, Michelle Da Rin will show handmade handbags as well as her signature work, wearable art jewelry. She makes bracelets, necklaces and other pieces with materials including forged and enameled copper, silver, leather and gemstones. Her jewelry has been discussed in articles appearing in publications such as Tango and W and on TV programs such as NBC’s The Today Show and WSYR-Channel 9’s Bridge Street. The exhibition is broad-based, with a portfolio including both functional and non-functional works. Suzanne Masters often explores spirituality in her artworks, as seen in her piece “Fetish Prayer Ritual,” which combines acrylics, ceramics, dyed textures and found objects. In addition, David “Hongo” Robertson will present pieces from his Meditation Art series. They and other artists will be on site at a space that isn’t a typical gallery. The building is home base for Dowling’s photography business. Yet from time to time he has hosted several shows including Vistas Cubanas, a highly successful 2016 exhibit, and a 2017 holiday-time group project. Linda Esterley, curator for this weekend’s show, stated that she enjoyed the challenge of hanging a 20-artist exhibit in a space that’s clearly not jumbo-size. While the show’s No. 1 objective is to provide a showcase for the artworks, it provides other benefits. “I like seeing other artists’ work,” said Wendy Harris. “There’s an opportunity for conversation and connection with those artists.” The Dowling Art Center’s open house/ fine art sale runs Saturday, Nov. 3, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 4, noon to 4 p.m. It’s free and open to the public. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You have officially
arrived at the heart of the most therapeutic phase of your cycle. Congratulations! It’s an excellent time to fix what’s wrong, hurt or distorted. You will attract more help than you can imagine if you summon an aggressive approach toward finding antidotes and cures. A good way to set the tone for your aggressive determination to feel better is to heed this advice from poet Maya Angelou: “Take a day to heal from the lies you’ve told yourself and the ones that have been told to you.”
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) U2’s singer Bono, born under the sign of Taurus, says that all of us suffer from the sense that something’s missing from our lives. We imagine that we lack an essential quality or experience, and its absence makes us feel sad and insufficient. French philosopher Blaise Pascal referred to this emptiness as “a God-shaped hole.” Bono adds that “you can never completely fill that hole,” but you may find partial fixes through love and sex, creative expression, family, meaningful work, parenting, activism, and spiritual devotion. I bring this to your attention, Taurus, because I have a strong suspicion that in the coming weeks you will have more power to fill your God-shaped hole than you’ve had in a long time.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) “Most of our de-
sires are clichés, right? Ready to wear, one size fits all. I doubt if it’s even possible to have an original desire anymore.” So says a character in Gemini author Tobias Wolff’s short story “Sanity.” Your assignment in the coming weeks, Gemini, is to refute and rebel against this notion. The cosmic rhythms will work in your favor to the degree that you cultivate innovative yearnings and unique urges. I hope you’ll make it your goal to have the experiences necessary to stir up an outbreak of original desires.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) If you’re a typical
member of the Cancerian tribe, you’re skilled at responding constructively when things go wrong. Your intelligence rises up hot and strong when you get sick or rejected or burned. But if you’re a classic Crab, you have less savvy in dealing with triumphs. You may sputter when faced with splashy joy, smart praise or lucky breaks. But everything I just said is meant to be a challenge, not a curse. One of the best reasons to study astrology is to be aware of the potential shortcomings of your sign so you can outwit and overcome them. That’s why I think that eventually you’ll evolve to the point where you won’t be a bit flustered when blessings arrive. And the immediate future will bring you excellent opportunities to upgrade your response to good fortune.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) “Each of us needs some-
thing of an island in her life,” said poet John Keats. “If not an actual island, at least some place, or space in time, in which to be herself, free to cultivate her differences from others.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, Leo, you’ll be wise to spend extra time on your own island in the next two weeks. Solitude is unlikely to breed unpleasant loneliness, but will instead inspire creative power and evoke inner strength. If you don’t have an island yet, go in search! (P.S.: I translated Keats’ pronouns into the feminine gender.)
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) I’m rooting for you
to engage in experimental intimacy, Virgo. I hope you’ll have an affinity for sweet blends and incandescent mixtures and arousing juxtapositions. To get in the right mood for this playful work, you could read love poetry and listen to uplifting songs that potentize your urge to merge. Here are a few lyrical passages to get you warmed up. 1. “Your flesh quivers against mine like moonlight on the sea.” —Julio Cortázar 2. “When she smiles like that she is as beautiful as all my secrets. —Anne Carson 3. “My soul is alight with your infinitude of stars . . . The flowers of your garden blossom in my body.” —Rabindranath Tagore 4. “I can only find
you by looking deeper, that’s how love leads us into the world.” —Anne Michaels
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Of course I want you
to have more money. I’d love for you to buy experiences that expand your mind, deepen your emotional intelligence, and foster your ability to create inspiring forms of togetherness. My soul would celebrate if you got access to new wealth that enabled you to go in quest of spiritual fun and educational adventures. On the other hand, I wouldn’t be thrilled about you spending extra cash on trivial desires or fancy junk you don’t really need. Here’s why I feel this way: To the extent that you seek more money to pursue your most righteous cravings, you’re likely to get more money.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “Penetralia” is a
word that means the innermost or most private parts, the most secret and mysterious places. It’s derived from the same Latin term that evolved into the word “penetrate.” You Scorpios are, of course, the zodiac’s masters of penetralia. More than any other sign, you’re likely to know where the penetralia are, as well as how to get to them and what to do when you get to them. I suspect that this tricky skill will come in extra-handy during the coming weeks. I bet your intimate adeptness with penetralia will bring you power, fun and knowledge.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarian
poet Rainer Maria Rilke suggested that we cultivate an alertness for the ever-present possibility of germination and gestation. On a regular basis, he advised, we should send probes down into the darkness, into our unconscious minds, to explore for early signs of awakening. And when we discover the forces of renewal stirring there in the depths, we should be humble and reverent toward them, understanding that they are as-yet beyond the reach of our ability to understand. We shouldn’t seek to explain and define them at first, but simply devote ourselves to nurturing them. Everything I just said is your top assignment in the coming weeks.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’re in a
phase of your cycle when your influence is at a peak. People are more receptive than usual to your ideas and more likely to want the same things you do. Given these conditions, I think the best information I can offer you is the following meditation by Capricorn activist Martin Luther King Jr. “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarian envi-
ronmentalist Edward Abbey spent much of his life rambling around in the great outdoors. He was an emancipated spirit who regarded the natural world as the only church he needed. In an eruption of ecstatic appreciation, he once testified that “Life is a joyous dance through daffodils beneath cerulean blue skies and then, then what? I forget what happens next.” And yet the truth is, Abbey was more than a wild-hearted Dionysian explorer in the wilderness. He found the discipline and diligence to write 23 books! I mention this, Aquarius, because now is a perfect time for you to be like the disciplined and diligent and productive version of Abbey.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) For renowned
Piscean visual artist Anne Truitt (1921–2004), creating her work was high adventure. She testified that artists like her had “to catapult themselves wholly, without holding back one bit, into a course of action without having any idea where they will end up. They are like riders who gallop into the night, eagerly leaning on their horse’s neck, peering into a blinding rain.” Whether or not you’re an artist, Pisces, I suspect your life in the coming weeks may feel like the process she described. And that’s a good thing! A fun thing! Enjoy your ride.
