ON THE COVER
President Donald Trump faced major domestic and international backlash over canceling last Saturday’s visit to a World War I ceremony in France due to rain. In a statement, the White House said the appearance had to be canceled “due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather,” Reuters reported. The soggy weather meant the president’s helicopter could not be taken to the site, and there were security concerns in arranging a motorcade at the last minute. Criticism flew from all angles, including from former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel; Nicholas Soames, a British politician and grandson of Winston Churchill; former Secretary of State John Kerry and more, The Hill found. Many said it was an embarrassment and an insult to the fallen soldiers.

THINGS THAT MATTER B y L u k e Pa r s n o w
KATKO SURFS ABOVE MIDTERM BLUE WAVE Democrats called it a “blue wave,” but last week’s midterm elections were more like a “blue splash.” The party was the clear winner after it won control of the U.S. House of Representatives, ending its eight-year stretch of being in the minority and the one-party dominance in Washington that President Donald Trump has enjoyed for his first two years. But in Central New York, Republican Reps. John Katko in the 24th Congressional District, Elise Stefanik in the 21st and Tom Reed in the 23rd all won re-election with comfortable margins. Meanwhile, Rep. Claudia Tenney in the 22nd is the underdog in a tight race against Anthony Brindisi that will be decided by absentee ballots. Katko’s victory over progressive challenger Dana Balter, with the backdrop of a Democratic triumph in the House, is a departure from recent history. Not since 2006, when longtime Rep. Jim Walsh squeaked out a win over newcomer Dan Maffei in a Democratic wave election, has the Syracuse-based district broken from the national trend in a federal election. In 2008, Maffei was elected to his first term while Barack Obama won the presidency and Democrats maintained majorities in Congress. In 2010, the rise of the Tea Party helped Republicans topple 63 Democratic seats in the House. One of them was Ann Marie Buerkle, who defeated Maffei by a super-slim margin. In 2012, Obama won re-election and Democrats won back some seats in the House, including Maffei’s after he defeated Buerkle in a rematch. In 2014, Republicans took control of the Senate and won their largest majority in the House since the 1920s. That’s when Katko unseated Maffei by a 20-point margin. In 2016, Republicans maintained their congressional majorities and Trump was elected president, with Katko easily winning a second term. That pattern — which briefly made the district hold the status as the swingiest district in the entire nation — has kept
Katko a prime target for national Democrats hoping for a pickup since he first came into office. But now after he’s won three times, Democrats will probably begin looking elsewhere in future elections to spend their time and resources. Balter was by far the most formidable opponent Katko has faced. Whereas he won his first two elections by 20 points and 22 points respectively, Balter managed to close the gap to just 6 points. She was also Katko’s first opponent to win Onondaga County, which accounts for nearly 70 percent of the district’s active voters. Yet Katko turned out to be a better Republican candidate than Balter was a Democratic one. He painted himself as the independent bipartisan moderate congressman that he has portrayed himself as in past elections. Not only did he win once again in a district that has slightly more active Democratic voters — a sign he was successful once again at getting a significant percentage of Democrats to vote for him — but Katko was one of the few Republicans who were re-elected in districts that Hillary Clinton carried in 2016. While Balter was a robust grassroots
candidate, she had no political experience, little name recognition for most of the campaign, got distracted by a late primary challenge from Juanita Perez Williams and didn’t initially have the support of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. But most fatal for her was the same tactic that led many of her Democratic colleagues to victory. While she wasn’t wrong about Katko’s reliable Republican vote on most issues, she relied too much on associating Katko with President Trump, which probably made her appear too partisan to too many voters. In a district that isn’t crazy about the president but appears to like Katko, weaponizing Trump isn’t going to be a winning message. In a national election that was very much a referendum on Trump’s first term, in Central New York it was a referendum on Katko’s first two terms. Now that he will be returning to Washington and serving for the first time in the House minority, Katko’s image as an independent bipartisan moderate — the same image that helped him get elected three times — will be put to the biggest test yet. BROADWAY’S HUNTER FOSTER NAMED REDHOUSE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The name and face are already familiar. Last weekend Hunter Foster, the new Redhouse Arts Center artistic director, arrived in town. Foster was nominated for his first Tony Award as Seymour in the 2003 revival of Little Shop of Horrors. He got the role after his smashing success as Bobby Strong in Urinetown. He also appeared as Leo Bloom in a Broadway revival of The Producers and Ensign Pulver in the Kennedy Center production of Mister Roberts. TV audiences know him as Scotty Simms in
the ABC Family cable-TV show Bunheads. At age 49, he’s put his entire life into performing, writing, and in the last five years especially, directing. In announcing Foster’s appointment, Redhouse executive director Samara Hannah said that in the board of trustees’ extensive national search, his name immediately stood out. Along with his numerous national credits, Foster is currently artistic associate with Bucks County Playhouse in suburban New Hope, Pennsylvania. There he has been noted for his high-spirited direction of classic musicals like Guys and Dolls, 42nd Street and Ain’t Misbehavin’. His recent mounting of Stephen Sondheim’s Company attracted the attention of the Wall Street Journal’s often dyspeptic Terry Teachout, who described Foster as “an up-and-comer.” A University of Michigan graduate who spent some of his youth in Georgia, Foster in interview voices a high anticipation about living in Syracuse. He already knows upstate, as his wife Jennifer Cody grew up near Rochester. She is also a Broadway star whom he met during a production of Grease. They occasionally appear together; last year the couple costarred in A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia at Rochester’s GeVa Theatre. Foster speaks highly both of the new

Redhouse venue on South Salina Street and the buzz of the downtown neighborhood. “All the fundraising has been done” for the $10 million, 40,000-squarefoot theater, with the state-of-the-art technology ready for him to take charge. “It’s one of the most impressive new theater spaces I have ever seen. The new space allows us to produce shows
in many varied and experimental ways which will make the Redhouse a unique cultural destination in Syracuse.” The energy of adjacent Armory Square, an enterprise 20-plus years in the making, is an asset Foster cites in his decision to move here. He and Cody will live nearby. He may be able to walk to work. Before taking over, Foster must return to New York City for the off-Broadway comedy The Other Josh Cohen, which he earlier had helmed at GeVa. He will be back in early December to work with executive director Hannah on the programming of the 2019-2020 season. The Redhouse will still be rooted in the community. Foster says, “My hope is to bring to the forefront and help cultivate new artists in the Central New York region who will have the opportunity to work side by side with established professionals from Broadway and around the country.” One of those professionals could be his sister, two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster, remembered for many musicals, including Shrek and The Drowsy Chaperone. She was also the star of the aforementioned TV comedy-drama Bunheads. SNT

STAGE
By James MacKillop
TALES FROM THE DARK SIDE WITH COMEDIES AND DRAMAS One-hit wonder Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band honestly merits the designation “legendary” of all the stage works of the last half-century. Audiences were shocked to see a room full of gay men contending candidly about their loves, fears and desperations, even more so than by The Changing Room or Steambath with mostly nude casts, but now forgotten. Despite the self-flagellation in Boys, the enthusiastic reception in gay Manhattan is widely thought to have emboldened the belligerent reaction in the Stonewall riots of the following year. What is most surprising in this 50th anniversary revival from Rarely Done Productions, running through Saturday, Nov. 17, at Jazz Central, is how many gags still hit the mark. It’s a dark, dark comedy, with dialogue such as, “Wanna see a happy homosexual? Look for a gay corpse.” Although two of our best wits, Oscar Wilde (cited in the play) and Noel Coward, happened to be gay, Crowley has little in common with either of them. Instead, The Boys in the Band unmistakably derives from Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, which this production beats on the laugh-o-meter, along with bitchy humor, games-playing and cruelty. Some commentators reach higher for comparison: Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party and Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit. Director Dan Tursi brings a personal authority to this production, having previously played the role of the party’s host Michael, an alcoholic lapsed Catholic who appears to speak for the playwright. Tall, hairless Jason Timothy delivers a tense and brittle Michael, whose squabbles with boyfriend Donald (Jonathan Fleischman) set the tone for two hours. Donald has fled to the Hamptons and while not wanting to return to the closet seeks to separate himself from the gay lifestyle on the Upper East Side. Five friends are gathering for the birthday of Harold (David Minikheim, unrecognizable in a frizzy black wig), who will arrive last. Scowling, suit-wearing Hank (Jimmy Curtin) is leaving his wife to take up with irascible fashion photographer Larry (Joshua Kimball). The one black man, Bernard (Michael Dean Anderson), the “queen of spades,” must endure Archie Bunker-ish taunts, among the most dated lines in the play. Mincing, effeminate interior decorator Emory (Michael Stephon) might irritate the other guests and would win only cringes on Gay Pride Day. But he gets more than his share of gag lines and Stephon never fails to deliver. There are also two interlopers, Michael’s anxious straight friend, Alan (Michael Reicke) and Harold’s birthday “gift,” a sex-for-hire cowboy (scene-stealing Josh Ammons). This revival of Boys allows us to see how prevalent guilt and self-accusation once were. Leo Varadkar, the

gay prime minister of Ireland, and Jared Polis, just elected governor of Colorado, have none of that. Staying on the dark side, Geoffrey Nauffts’ Tony Award-nominated comedy of ideas, Next Fall, made quite a splash when it first opened off-Broadway (2009), then on Broadway (2010). Several local thespians have been hankering to get to it, but the Syracuse University Drama Department jumped first; their production runs through Saturday, Nov. 17. SU Drama’s superior resources allow director and department chair Ralph Zito to solve the problems of telling a story out of sequence. Action begins on a harshly lighted platform above the stage, a hospital waiting room, while everything else unfolds below, flashing back five years. But Breanna Zahakos’ set and David Jackson’s lighting design mean we never forget that we’re all facing the prospect of death. The unseen Luke has been hit by a taxi. Waiting are his pals Holly (Talia Wernick) and Brandon (Michael Sloan), joined by his flighty motor-mouthed, Southern-accented mother Arlene (Kendra Kirby). With hand-sanitizer dispensers everywhere, it’s a grim scene, lightened by Arlene’s overly candid admissions, such as, “I used to be a loose cannon.” Late arriving are Luke’s divorced father Butch (Rupert Krueger), who begins by complaining that taxi drivers are immigrants without green cards. There is also tall, bearded Adam (Nick Turturro), Luke’s friend. Blue state audiences will perceive that Luke and Adam are lovers and that the parents are oblivious. Just as playwright Nauffts was slow in introducing Luke’s trouble-generating father, he is even slower in getting to Next Fall’s unique premise. Adam is an untroubled atheist, while Luke (Justin Slepicoff) is a convinced fundamentalist. They met when Luke, then a waiter, saved Adam’s life with the Heimlich maneuver. That led to the bedroom in an apparently long-term relationship. Luke brushes off Deuteronomy’s (apparent) condem-
nation of gay sex because he has accepted Jesus as his personal savior and can be forgiven. So would, he blithely explains, the murderers of Matthew Shepard in 1998. Less fortunate, he admits, would be Shepard himself, unless he repented and was born again. Strange to say, the name “Donald Trump,” then known only as a B-list celebrity, is cited in the dialogue. Nauffts’ play is prescient, as the reader will have deduced, even though the playwright could never have foreseen that Trump would be idolized and accepted by large swathes of the Christian right. Nauffts never hectors, like George Bernard Shaw or Paddy Chayefsky, but he unmistakably wants us to look at ourselves anew in relation to others. Nick Turturro gives Adam much nuance; he’s no atheist saint. Justin Slepicoff makes Luke an appealing Parsifal-like innocent. And Kendra Kirby resists running away with Arlene’s wild excesses, while appearing to be 40 years older than herself. Few people knew the dark side better than the subject of the new production from Central New York Playhouse, running through Saturday, Nov. 17. The oneword title Nevermore comes with advantages, even more when the subtitle Edgar Allan Poe: The Final Mystery is added. We know going in who it’s about and that it’s spooky. Its author, Julian Wiles, is a prolific playwright who founded Charleston Stage in South Carolina in 1978, and produced Nevermore there in 1994. Since then professional companies have ignored it, and neither Broadway nor off-Broadway opened a door. In his second outing at the helm, however, director Christopher Lupia has again made literary prestige a prime target. His first was George Orwell’s 1984 (August 2017) in the neglected Robert Owens adaptation. He favors little-known paths to well-known works. Poe was only 40 when he died in Baltimore, in October 1849. There are several controversies about his death; Wiles follows the one that Poe (played by a husky
Ethan Washburn) was supposed to have left for New York City on a steamer five days earlier and never arrived there. He was found wandering in the street wearing someone else’s clothes and murmuring about a man named “Reynolds.” Even before Wiles speculates on what could have happened in those five days, he asserts autobiographical connections with all the familiar poems and stories, starting with Annabelle Lee (Lisanne Petracca), who haunts the entire production in a hooded white gown. Did Poe board what he thought was the steamer under the gimlet-gaze of Captain Amos Nimrod (Simon Moody)? While Nimrod is usually thought of as a hunter in Genesis, the biblical commentator Flavious Josephus says he is an enemy of God and Abraham. We get the picture. While Lupia’s default set is the steamer’s deck, action tends to sprawl from a
lecture hall to a bedroom and banquet tables. By the time we touch on all the narratives, “Masque of the Red Death,” “Hop-Frog” or “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the set has changed a dozen times, a challenge energetically met by producer Keith Arlington. All that rumbling of furniture, however, undercuts the fog machine and offstage sounds, such as the crow-like call of the Raven. In less than two hours’ running time (with intermission), we hear from 14 men, seven women and two children in 41 speaking roles. Strong presences come from experienced reliables including Lynn King, Michael King, Michaela Oney, Kathy Egloff and David Simmons. Derek Washburn, an experienced supporting player in his first lead, provides the heavy lifting, although he’s stronger in the several mad scenes than in the lowkeyed dialogue. SNT

Election night buzzed with anticipation in Onondaga County as supporters gathered to see who’d win their respective seats. Counter-clockwise from top left, Republican Bob Antonacci and his “mascot” (top left) celebrated a win for Sen. John DeFrancisco’s seat during the GOP’s annual election results at the Sheraton University Inn (Bill DeLapp photo); congressional incumbent John Katko’s stop at Our Lady of Pompeii Church’s spaghetti dinner ended up being a good-luck charm to inch a 6 percent victory over Democratic challenger Dana Balter, who watched the returns at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown; Rachel May, who shut out David Valesky in the Democratic primary for the 53rd District, used her momentum to win the final run; and Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh was spotted with new County Executive Ryan McMahon during the daylong pasta feast. Meet the SALT Awards winners. Michael Davis photo
Stage Struck
Laughs, tears, songs and dances highlight the annual SALT Awards ceremony By James MacKillop Brighter, faster, classier but still as upbeat and raucous as ever. This year’s Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) Awards roared into the new Austin and Allyn Auditorium of the Redhouse Arts Center on Salina Street. Every seat was filled, and those seats were kind to the tush for more than three hours. Josh Mele, this year’s show producer, had streamlined the presentations and disciplined the loquacious. The early awards for sound, lighting, sets and costumes went especially quickly. Even if the evening did not end until nearly 10 p.m., it did not feel that long. Laughter and applause were still spirited in the last half-hour. Syracuse Stage was once again a big winner, with artistic director Bob Hupp taking home a crate full of trophies, many for out-of-town professionals who could not attend, but also a sweet one for himself: Best Director of a Musical for Next to Normal. In a reconfiguration of categories, Syracuse Stage now competes with Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre Company and Auburn’s Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival and its Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, whose Brett Smock won for Best Choreographer for Mamma Mia! The other summer companies, Cortland Repertory Theatre and Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre, now compete in the regional category with Syracuse’s Redhouse. Cortland Rep’s Kerby Thompson was the second-busiest man of the evening, especially for the risk musical Newsies, and the Hangar was shut out. Mele was judicious in selecting the evening’s presenters: Skaneateles’ Bradley Benjamin, now on tour with Pippin, and TeNesha Murphy of WSYR-Channel 9’s morning infotainment show Bridge Street. They graced through some

of the more obscure names in community theater. Murphy was so poised that when she was given the wrong page for an intro, she turned it into an asset. Mele also went with still-admired veterans: costumer Eugene Taddeo introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award to octogenarian Marie Felice, the spark plug behind the fondly remembered Pompeian Players. That prompted the evening’s first standing ovation. Bob Brown, the mellifluous baritone, did the Hall of Fame Award introduction for the late Armond Magnarelli with a heartfelt but light tribute. A memorial tribute to troupers lost this year featured “Beautiful City” sung by Nic MacLane. The best known of these was singer Lee Dreamer. Lightening the timing was newly svelte and blonde Jennifer Pearson as a vamping Vanna White-styled award presenter. She made sure there was never a slack moment but did not overstay her welcome. When he accepted an award for his direction of Our Town, Cortland Rep’s Thompson noted that, given the current world events, he thought it was time to return to a simpler era. Yet director Justin Polly topped that sentiment when he won for his direction of Central New York Playhouse’s Frost/Nixon: “When I looked at the current political situation, I thought it was time to bring back Richard Nixon.” Exploiting a link to the same production, Tom Minion accepted his award for Best Actor with his fingers in the V-sign and a creditable Nixon mimic — only his full white beard was in preparation for playing Kris Kringle in December’s Central New York Playhouse production of Miracle on 34th Street. The Syracuse University football squad’s hopes for a season-ending bowl bid keep getting better all the time, as the Orange improved their record to 8-2 after steamrollering the Louisville Cardinals for a 54-23 victory Nov. 9 at the Carrier Dome. More than 42,000 fans rocked the Loud House for the team’s final home game, which also included a Senior Day farewell for players such as quarterback Eric Dungey (right), as well as festivities that commemorated Veterans Day weekend (top).

Dark Hollow members Mike Vincitore and Mike O’Hara.
DARK HOLLOW HELPS CELEBRATE WESTCOTT THEATER’S 10TH BIRTHDAY The Westcott Theater, 524 Westcott St., will notch its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 8 p.m., Thanksgiving Eve. To celebrate the occasion, local Grateful Dead tribute band Dark Hollow will take the stage — just like they did when the Westcott first opened in 2008. Now with a new lineup, Dark Hollow is feeling stronger than ever, bringing cherished and rarely heard Dead tunes to life. Original members Mike Vincitore and Mike O’Hara started brewing the band in 1996, when O’Hara was 16 and Vincitore was 21. “He was just a young kid,” Vincitore recalls. “I’d go to his mom and dad’s house to give him guitar lessons. But I heard him sing and was like, ‘You may be onto something.’ He was like a vocal chameleon. He could sing Eddie Vedder or Pigpen (Ron McKernan) or Jerry (Garcia) or Dave Matthews.” The duo would try out material during Thursday open mikes at Coleman’s Irish Pub, building a powerful arsenal of songs. When friends started joining in, the band was formed. By late 1997, Dark Hollow included Vincitore, O’Hara, John Callahan on rhythm guitar, bassist Christian Walker, Michael Callahan on keys, drummer Chris Chatterton and contributors such as Jenny O’Hara, Shawn “Skip” Philippon, Marty Spagnola and Matt Sanford. But there was already a major Grateful Dead group in town. The Homel-Alaniz Band performed 330 consecutive Monday shows at the former Sutter’s Mill from 1987 to 1993, followed by subsequent gigs at Hungry Chucks and the Phantom Club. “Those guys were like rock stars,” O’Hara remembers. “People went bonkers for Monday nights. It was a real big thing.” But as Homel-Alaniz was breaking apart in the late 1990s, Dark Hollow was coming together. The new group eventually took over the weekly Wednesday slot at Phantom Club, with several members of Homel-Alaniz coming aboard, such as David “Ese” Alaniz, Tim

Bergen and Dave Desiro. Alaniz’s sons Jacob and Josh also hopped in, while Kat Alaniz (Ese’s wife) would occasionally sing backing vocals with the group. “It was intimidating (to take over for them),” Vincitore says. “But it was really exhilarating. I was honored to be playing with some of those guys. A lot of the alumni spilled into Dark Hollow. We’ve always been connected like an extended family.” During the 2000s O’Hara took a break from the band and Matt Sanford took over lead vocals, although O’Hara always kept some involvement. But within the last five years, the group has built a solid roster featuring Vincitore, O’Hara, Jeff Roney (drums), Aaron Fried (bass), Mark Nanni (keys), Jack Jarvis (drums) and Mike Hamilton (rhythm guitar). The lineup works hard to hit a blend that stays true to the Grateful Dead, and to the players themselves. “The Dead’s music, it’s so flavorful,” O’Hara says. “The music’s always moving in a different direction. Even though it could be the same notes, it’s always played in a little bit different way. In the past five years, we’ve taken the music more seriously and it’s definitely starting to show. Our crowds are consistent and the sound has gotten better and refined. We’re starting to really gel.” O’Hara points out that members like Nanni help “put a nice bow around things and keep it fresh,” while Hamilton “adds a lot to the band as well. He plays very much along the lines of what Bobby’s (Weir) doing. That helps to really get a more authentic sound. I think we represent the Dead, but we sound like ourselves.” On the technical side, Vincitore emphasizes the band’s use of certain effects and equipment to get the genuine Dead sounds. With his Alembic Tribute Guitar, Lieber/D.I.G. Tiger Blonde guitar, McIntosh MC2120 Power Amp, Sarno SMS Preamp (Jerry Garcia modification) and various pedals spanning delay, reverb, Strymon Mobius (modulation), OctaFuzz and more, Vincitore has homed in on the many tones of Garcia.
“But a lot of it is in the technique,” he says. “I can do it (Jerry’s sound) on an acoustic guitar. I don’t need all of the bells and whistles. His sound is a musical gumbo of so many styles and it’s about embracing them and combining it into your own player. Bluegrass, reggae, funk, blues, jazz, all of those genres.” Vincitore got his start playing Dead music the old-fashioned way, by learning from bootleg tapes and patiently figuring out the basics of the song one note at a time. “David Homel and Ese (Alaniz) would say, ‘I use this to get this sound,’” Vincitore says. “We had a professional relationship there. And Ese would have me come over to his house sometimes and play acoustic. I’d ask, ‘What chord are you using on “Saint of Circumstance?”’ There were books, but everything really had to be learned auditorily. And the real challenge was the bootleg tapes. They were spun so much, they would be a quarter or a half-pitch off and you’d think, ‘Man! I’m really out of tune!’ It was good for ear-training in hindsight.” Vincitore never got the chance to see Jerry Garcia live, yet he knew that he wanted to play his music by the time he was 19. O’Hara also fell in love with the band as a teenager: “They gave me chills. There were so many influences. I just knew it was good and the lyrics jump off the page. They give you such a visual story. They just never get old. The words are so captivating.” Dark Hollow continues to book shows throughout the area, including the Auburn Public Theater on Saturday, Nov. 17, and the Dec. 8 Christmas party at Sharkey’s Bar and Grill. The band also breaks down into a duo (Vincitore and O’Hara) and a trio (Vincitore, O’Hara and Nanni) several times each month. But the main vein of what makes them successful always stays the same. “It’s the chemistry,” O’Hara says. “Vincitore and I have always had chemistry since day one. It’s been really awesome that it’s continued through the years. Now, Mark adds his own flair. Everyone does and it makes it our own.” SNT

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19) Interior designer
Dorothy Draper said she wished there were a single word that meant “exciting, frightfully important, irreplaceable, deeply satisfying, basic, and thrilling, all at once.” I wonder if such a word exists in the Chamicuro language spoken by a few Peruvians or the Sarsi tongue spoken by the Tsuu T’ina tribe in Alberta, Canada. In any case, I’m pleased to report that for the next few weeks, many of you Aries people will embody and express that rich blend of qualities. I have coined a new word to capture it: tremblissimo.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) According to my astrological intuition, you’re entering a phase when you will derive special benefit from these five observations by poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau. 1. “There are truths that you can only say after having won the right to say them.” 2. “True realism consists in revealing the surprising things that habit keeps covered and prevents us from seeing.” 3. “What the public criticizes in you, cultivate. It is you.” 4. “You should always talk well about yourself! The word spreads around, and in the end, no one remembers where it started.” 5. “We shelter an angel within us. We must be the guardians of that angel.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Adolescence used
to be defined as a phase that lasted from ages 13 to 19. But scientists writing in the journal The Lancet say that in modern culture, the current span is from ages 10 to 24. Puberty comes earlier now, in part because of shifts in eating habits and exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals. At the same time, people hold onto their youth longer because they wait a while before diving into events associated with the initiation into adulthood, like getting married, finishing education, and having children. Even if you’re well past 24, Gemini, I suggest you revisit and reignite your juvenile stage in the coming weeks. You need to reconnect with your wild innocence. You’ll benefit from immersing yourself in memories of coming of age. Be 17 or 18 again, but this time armed with all you have learned since.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Cancerian base-
ball pitcher Satchel Paige had a colorful career characterized by creative showmanship. On some occasions, he commanded his infielders to sit down and loll on the grass behind him, whereupon he struck out three batters in a row—ensuring no balls were hit to the spots vacated by his teammates. Paige’s success came in part because of his wide variety of tricky pitches, described by author Buck O’Neil as “the bat-dodger, the two-hump blooper, the four-day creeper, the dipsy-do, the Little Tom, the Long Tom, the bee ball, the wobbly ball, the hurry-up ball and the nothin’ ball.” I bring this to your attention, Cancerian, because now is an excellent time for you to amp up your charisma and use all your tricky pitches.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) “Everyone tells a story
about themselves inside their own head,” writes fantasy author Patrick Rothfuss. “Always. All the time. We build ourselves out of that story.” So what’s your story, Leo? The imminent future will be an excellent time to get clear about the dramatic narrative you weave. Be especially alert for demoralizing elements in your tale that may not in fact be true, and that therefore you should purge. I think you’ll be able to draw on extra willpower and creative flair if you make an effort to reframe the story you tell yourself so that it’s more accurate and uplifting.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) In describing a man
she fell in love with, author Elizabeth Gilbert wrote that he was both “catnip and kryptonite to me.” If you’ve spent time around cats, you understand that catnip can be irresistible to them. As for kryptonite: it’s the one substance that weakens the fictional superhero Superman. Is there anything in your life that resembles Gilbert’s paramour? A place or situation or activity or person that’s both catnip and kryp-
tonite? I suspect you now have more ability than usual to neutralize its obsessive and debilitating effects on you. That could empower you to make a good decision about the relationship you’ll have with it in the future.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “I had to learn very early not to limit myself due to others’ limited imaginations,” testifies Libran astronaut Mae Jemison. She adds, “I have learned these days never to limit anyone else due to my own limited imagination.” Are those projects on your radar, Libra? I hope so. You now have extra power to resist being shrunk or hobbled by others’ images of you. You also have extra power to help your friends and loved ones grow and thrive as you expand your images of them. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) The United States
is the world’s top exporter of food. In second place is the Netherlands, which has 0.4 percent as much land as the United States. How do Dutch farmers accomplish this miraculous feat? In part because of their massive greenhouses, which occupy vast areas of non-urbanized space. Another key factor is their unprecedented productivity, which dovetails with a commitment to maximum sustainability. For instance, they produce 20 tons of potatoes per acre, compared with the global average of nine. And they do it using less water and pesticides. In my long-term outlook for you Scorpios, I see you as having a metaphorical similarity to Dutch farmers. During the next 12 months, you have the potential to make huge impacts with your focused and efficient efforts.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “The world
is like a dropped pie most of the time,” writes author Elizabeth Gilbert. “Don’t kill yourself trying to put it back together. Just grab a fork and eat some of it off the floor. Then carry on.” From what I can tell about the state of your life, Sagittarius, the metaphorical pie has indeed fallen onto the metaphorical floor. But it hasn’t been there so long that it has spoiled. And the floor is fairly clean, so the pie won’t make you sick if you eat it. My advice is to sit down on the floor and eat as much as you want. Then carry on.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Novelist Ani-
ta Desai writes, “Isn’t it strange how life won’t flow, like a river, but moves in jumps, as if it were held back by locks that are opened now and then to let it jump forward in a kind of flood?” I bring this to your attention, Capricorn, because I suspect that the locks she refers to will soon open for you. Events may not exactly flow like a flood, but I’m guessing they will at least surge and billow and gush. That could turn out to be nerve-racking and strenuous, or else fun and interesting. Which way it goes will depend on your receptivity to transformation.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “Miracles come
to those who risk defeat in seeking them,” writes author Mark Helprin. “They come to those who have exhausted themselves completely in a struggle to accomplish the impossible.” Those descriptions could fit you well in the coming weeks, but with one caveat. You’ll have no need to take on the melodramatic, almost desperate mood Helprin seems to imply is essential. Just the opposite, in fact. Yes, risk defeat and be willing to exhaust yourself in the struggle to accomplish the impossible; but do so in a spirit of exuberance, motivated by the urge to play.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “Never invoke the
gods unless you really want them to appear,” warned author G.K. Chesterton. “It annoys them very much.” My teachers have offered me related advice. Don’t ask the gods to intervene, they say, until you have done all you can through your own efforts. Furthermore, don’t ask the gods for help unless you are prepared to accept their help if it’s different from what you thought it should be. I bring these considerations to your attention, Pisces, because you currently meet all these requirements. So I say go right ahead and seek the gods’ input and assistance.
