Move over, Mace. Women in China are buying “anti-pervert flamethrowers” that can be carried discreetly in a handbag and launch a scorching rebuff up to 50cm (about 20 inches) when needed. Chinese police have warned that the devices are illegal, but one vendor called them a “legal, non-lethal tool.”

People Different From Us

Barbara Rogers, 42, of Coolbaugh Township, Pa., said she was just following directions when she shot her boyfriend, Steven Mineo, 32, in the forehead on July 15. Rogers said Mineo asked her to kill him because he thought a cult they belonged to was led by a reptilian pretending to be a human. Rogers called 911 to report the shooting, after which she was charged with criminal homicide.

Animal Kingdom

An African grey parrot named Bud may have been the key witness in convicting 49-year-old Glenna Duram of White Cloud, Mich., in the shooting death of her husband, Martin Duram, 46. The investigation of the 2015 shooting dragged on for a year before Martin’s first wife, who inherited the parrot, shared with a local TV station a videotape of Bud imitating two people having an argument, including the words “Don’t (expletive) shoot.” Three weeks later, Glenna Duram was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, and on July 19, she was found guilty.

Paranormal Activity

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division issued an alert on Aug. 9 in advance of the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21 asking South Carolinians to be “vigilant” and look out for Lizardmen

Customers at a Flying J truck stop in West Hanover Township, Va., got quite the show on Aug. 14 when Craig Troccia, 54, of Roanoke smashed the windshield of his truck and poured a cup of urine onto the interior. Wait! Did we mention Troccia was naked? He then yelled a racial epithet at a black man and flashed his genitals at everyone within sight. Next, (still naked) Troccia pointed a gun at the same man and then at another man and threatened to kill them both. After state troopers loaded Troccia into their cruiser, he “slammed his body and head on the various panels of the vehicle,” they reported. He was charged with 34 criminal counts, including public drunkenness.

Ow! Ow! Ow!

On June 25, Doug Bergeson of Peshtigo, Wisc., was framing the fireplace of a home he was building when his nail gun slipped from his grasp and shot a 3 1/2-inch nail into his heart. Bergeson said it stung, but when he saw the nail “moving with my heart,” he realized he wasn’t going to get any more work done.

So he washed up and drove himself to the hospital 12 miles away, where he alerted a security guard that he had a nail in his heart and said, “It’d be great if you can find somebody to help me out here.”

Bergeson underwent surgery to remove the nail, which his doctors said barely missed a main artery in his heart.

Everett Lee Compton Jr., 49, told Siloam Springs, Ark., police that marijuana “makes him do sick things” after they apprehended him for abusing female donkeys. The donkeys’ owners, Emert and Joyce Whitaker, had set up a surveillance camera and recorded Compton on three occasions putting a bag over a donkey’s head and placing his pelvis against its rear end. “It just made me sick to my stomach,” said Joyce Whitaker. “To know that she couldn’t tell nobody and that she was having to go through this.”

Edward Kendrick McCarty, 38, of North Huntingdon, Pa., came away with more than good tips after deejaying a wedding reception. The morning after the wedding, bride Ashley Karasek of Turkeytown noticed that her box of wedding cards was mostly empty. McCarty had been in charge of the box during the reception, and Karasek noticed people handing him cards to put in it throughout the evening.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board is investigating in Navi Mumbai, India, after stray dogs started turning blue. An animal protection group there contends that dyes being dumped into the Kasadi River by nearby factories are causing the dogs’ fur to turn a bright shade of blue.

A school resource officer at Lexington Middle School in Lee County, Fla., caught a glimpse of something alarming on Aug. 15 as he looked out a second-floor window toward the parent pickup lane.

Christina Hester, 39, of Fort Myers was using her iPhone to cut and snort cocaine.

After seeing Hester use a straw to inhale the substance, the SRO asked her to come inside the school. He retrieved her purse and found .5 gram of cocaine inside, and she was charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Twelve-

year-old Spencer Yeager commented: “That’s crazy. That’s just so irresponsible and they shouldn’t be doing that.”

Drive-Thru Rage

Michael Delhomme couldn’t abide a Delray Beach, Fla., McDonald’s having run out of ice cream on Aug. 15. So while he and his friend, Jerry Henry, 19, waited in the drive-thru line, Delhomme asked Henry to get the “stick” out of the trunk. A McDonald’s employee watched on surveillance video as Henry went to the trunk and removed a replica AR-15 airsoft rifle, then got back in the car. The workers couldn’t tell that the weapon was not authentic and called 911, and Henry was charged with improper exhibition of a firearm.

Nakedness does leave one a bit vulnerable, as Travis Tingler, 32, found out on July 16 as he stood unclothed outside his girlfriend’s house in Manitowoc, Wisc., shouting and threatening to hurt the people inside. When police arrived, they tried and failed to get Tingler back into his pants, so they handcuffed him. As they struggled to put him in the police car, Tingler picked up a lighter off the ground, and a probe from an officer’s stun gun struck the lighter, igniting Tingler’s chest and beard hairs. An officer was able to pat the fire out.

Dilworth, Minn., police officer Brad Browning suffered a bout of bad luck on Aug. 2 after he pulled over a car with a burned-out headlight. The driver, Stephen Hietala, 27, of Perham, had a warrant out for his arrest. When officers tried to handcuff Hietala, he resisted, prompting one officer to fire his Taser, which missed Heitala and hit Officer Browning instead.

EXTRAS! READ ALL ABOUT IT! The former A.V. Zogg Middle School in the village of Liverpool will soon come to life as a backdrop for a teen-geared movie comedy set to begin filming through December. And the American High production company is on the hunt for extras who will fill the school’s hallways.

The Liverpool School of Cinema, as Zogg has been rebranded, is the brainchild of Hollywood writer-director Jeremy Garelick. His American High concept, which came from his love of high school movies, especially Brat Pack auteur John Hughes’ films of the 1980s such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Sixteen Candles, led Garelick to acquire the two-story Zogg building in order to create several low-budget high school-type movies.

“I started collecting what I believed to be the best material on the subject matter,” Garelick told the Syracuse New Times in a March interview. “People were

submitting high school screenplays to me because the studios weren’t making these kinds of movies anymore. So I’ve been looking to basically create a high school universe much in the same vein of the Marvel superhero universe.”

The cameras will start rolling next week for the comedy Eskimo Sisters.

Handling the direction will be Benjamin Kasulke, an acclaimed cinematographer who was born in Syracuse and is an Ithaca College graduate.

The shooting schedule that will involve extras will take place Sunday, Nov. 26, Monday, Nov. 27, Wednesday, Dec. 6, Thursday, Dec. 7, and Sunday, Dec. 17.

RECALLING REV. BETTY BONE SCHIESS’ LEGACY

I

n August 1980, longtime Syracusan Betty Bone Schiess joined 11 women who chained themselves to a railing outside the Washington, D.C., offices of the Republican National Committee. The women wore white and purple — colors associated with women’s suffrage — and burned a copy of the party platform, which the previous month reversed its 40-year tradition of supporting the Equal Rights Amendment.

“The fact that the Republicans withdrew support of the ERA from their platform is a scandal,” Schiess told The Washington Post at the time. (Although Congress approved the ERA in 1972, the amendment failed to get approval from three-fourths of states, required for it to be added to the U.S. Constitution.)

The protest came six years after Schiess, who died Oct. 20 at age 94, made history fighting for gender equality in the Episcopal Church. She was among the Philadelphia Eleven, women ordained priests in a July 29, 1974, Philadelphia ceremony that church officials called “irregular” because church law did not allow women to become priests.

The ceremony drew praise and condemnation, The late Bishop Rev. Ned Cole, spiritual leader of the local diocese, called the ordination “a mutinous use of Episcopal power.” He suspended Schiess “from all ministerial actions” and refused to recognize her ordination as a priest.

Schiess filed a sex discrimination lawsuit against Cole and the diocese in federal court. After the church approved female priests in 1976, she dropped the case.

Schiess, a native of Cincinnati, earned a master’s degree from Syracuse University in 1947. She and her husband, William Schiess, a physician, attended St. Albans Episcopal Church in Syracuse before moving to Grace Episcopal Church.

Grace, a parish known for its social activism, sponsored Schiess for ordination.

She served as a chaplain at SU and Cornell University and as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Mexico (Oswego County). She also served as president of the Greater Syracuse Chapter of the National Organization for Women and on Gov. Mario Cuomo’s Task Force on Life and the Law. She was inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls in 1994. She is survived by her husband of 70 years and two of their three children.

In Why Me Lord? (Syracuse University Press, 2003), Schiess wrote that she fought for women’s ordination “to save the church from sexism.” Twenty-nine years later, she questioned whether she had succeeded.

“Problems in the church and society — problems we had identified and hoped to resolve — are still with us,” she wrote

in the book’s preface. She cited racism, sexism, sexuality, ecumenical relations, and “the outworn mechanisms by which the church governs itself ... are part of our unfinished agenda.”

Schiess tackled that agenda — plus war, immigration, religious freedom and other causes — for decades through rallies, protests, public service and letters to the editor. Her memoir serves as a scrapbook of the civil rights and women’s movements, with cameos by local and national leaders. Close friends included Karen DeCrow, the late Syracuse-area attorney who served as national president of the National Organization for Women in the 1970s. The late Constance Cook, former New York state assemblywoman who sponsored a 1970 bill to repeal state anti-abortion laws, represented Schiess in her lawsuit against the Episcopal Church.

Although Schiess wrote with regret of “the still unresolved issues of gender stereotyping and the meaning of sexuality,” she did live to see significant changes in the church. In 2003, church representatives elected Gene Robinson the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop. In 2006, Episcopalians elected Katharine

Jefferts Schori the first woman to lead the national church.

“I’m amazed and, yes, delighted,” she told The Post-Standard at the time. “My little footnote is, ‘let’s not stop there.’”

In August 2016, Central New York Episcopalians elected DeDe Duncan-Probe bishop — the first woman to lead the diocese that denied Schiess ordination more than 40 years ago. Bishop Duncan-Probe praised Schiess’ legacy. The Philadelphia Eleven, in the tradition of suffragists from Seneca Falls, “showed courage in the face of prejudice,” she said. “Women’s ministry has been a deep and profound positive step for the church.”

Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, former pastor of Syracuse’s Grace Episcopal Church, last October was elected 11th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis, becoming the first black woman to lead an Episcopal diocese.

Serving at a parish connected to Schiess was “huge,” she said.

“My sense of her was that she knew that she made history but was forward-thinking about where the church needed to go,” she said. “Women’s ordination was the first of many barriers that needed to come down.”

Baskerville-Burrows spoke with the Syracuse New Times after the Indianapolis diocese ended its annual convention.

At that event, Episcopalians adopted a resolution supporting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. What would Betty Bone Schiess think of that? “I think she would just say,

Not just for yourself, but also to carve a path for others to follow, to lead by example, to show others you can take your struggles and weaknesses, and create purpose to make a better society.”

THREE PROFILES OF MILITARY WOMEN, THEIR STRUGGLES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

inger Peterman learned a long time ago that a person must create her own opportunities in places that seem impossible to do so, especially if she is limited by society.

Peterman was 23 when she joined the military, and was almost immediately deployed to Iraq. She served as a truck driver from March 2007 to December 2009. During her time in Iraq, she was sexually assaulted and experienced sexual harassment on a regular basis.

“The military culture is one that is not necessarily friendly to women,” she said. “People treat you as if you’re just there to look pretty and have sex. And if you don’t want to, they will force you.”

According to Peterman, many military authorities downplay sexual harassment and assault, especially if the victim was able to get away.

“I didn’t really feel validated that I was experiencing military sexual trauma, and having PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) as a result of that experience,” Peterman said. “At first I thought nothing happened, I’m fine. I’m good. But it’s the same thing: You still suffer the same sort of consequences even if you got away.”

After serving in Iraq, Peterman says she felt like a completely different person. “I didn’t want attention from guys anymore because of all the harassment and sexual advances I had gotten in the military,” she said.

It also affected her ability to trust others. Although Peterman received support from family, friends and colleagues, she said she still felt very isolated, and saw everything around her in a different light.

“It’s kinda like that movie Monsters Inc. Don’t you think it would be better if we gathered laughs instead of screams? Instead, we’re in a world that gets its energy from terror, from people screaming,” Peterman said.

Now 33, Peterman is a Ph.D student at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, where she is studying biomedical engineering. She hopes to create a device for veterans with PTSD, and has already received $3,000 in seed funding to start up a prosthetics company.

Peterman also has a 7-year-old son, Charlie. Although it has been hard for her to connect with him at times, she hopes to show him what she has learned from her experiences.

“I try to explain to him how things are socially constructed. Things were built before I was born, and those things are still standing,” she said. “They can change, but it takes time, it takes disaster, it takes strength and resilience, it takes people who care.”

Parker is now the program manager at the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF), where she leads the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) and Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) programs.

After teaching for two years, Parker decided she wanted to join the military.

Her brother had joined the Marine Corps just a year before that, and Parker was intrigued. She wanted to be in the action, not behind a desk.

She contacted officer recruiters in the Marines but got no response. Desperate, she approached the officer who had recruited her brother and was able to apply.

Parker was the only woman in a class of 46 people. When her batch was about to graduate, she learned that she was going to be held back for a week because the authorities did not want to put a female through by herself.

whom she could share her experiences and feelings. When asked what she would tell herself if she could go back in time, she said she would tell herself to seek out healthy friendships.

“I would go back and pull other young female Marines alongside me, whether it be for friendship or mentorship.”

“When I heard that was happening, I went to anybody that I could talk to, and I said, ‘If you want me to sign something, I’m not going to sit here and wait for a week,’” Parker said.

She was being held back due to safety concerns, but she ended up graduating with the rest of the batch. But her fight was just beginning.

All of her peers were sent to their prospective units, but Parker was placed in the company office. At the time, she didn’t know why and wondered whether it was because she was a woman.

At the office, Parker completed paperwork and worked as the commander’s driver. Although she learned a lot, helped many people, and picked up skills that she would use later in her career, she was not happy. “I was very frustrated, but I kept on going and did my thing,” she said.

Her situation worsened when she dis-

covered there were some people working in the office who were only there because they had done something wrong, such as driving under the influence. Parker later published a paper titled “Office Hours,” which detailed the implications of trusting people with a history of offences with important information in company offices. Her paper was published by the Marine Corps.

Shortly afterward, Parker was offered a job at a legal office, after which she was sent to a deployable unit with 40 males and no other women.

According to Parker, being the only woman was both good and bad. “I didn’t have anyone I could really connect with, but I also didn’t have to deal with any drama,” she said. “If I could do it over again, I’d probably do it the same way.”

However, Parker said there were times when she struggled to find people with

Christine Tarnowski Christine Tarnowski has always wanted to be part of something bigger than herself. This could have been the reason why the current senior director of operations at the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF) found herself walking into an Army recruiter’s station in 1987.

After enlisting, Tarnowski moved up the ranks, from working in a warehouse to holding a top position in the Army.

Tarnowski has been married, divorced, pregnant and remarried, and has worked throughout most of her life, primarily because as a woman, she felt she had to prove herself in a field that hasn’t traditionally been accommodating of women.

Because of her busy work life, her children weren’t able to participate in a lot of activities growing up, especially because Tarnowski was a single parent for a while.

However, Tarnowski also said there are more support systems for veterans with families, like day care centers for children, help from friends and family, and an overall sense of community.

However, there were times of struggle, and one event catalyzed Tarnowski’s decision to leave the military and move

on to the next thing, ultimately bringing her to Syracuse. Tarnowski’s commander purposely took her off a deployment list without consulting her, because he felt it was more important for her to stay at home and take care of her children.

“It was very thoughtful of him, but without a deployment, I wouldn’t be able to get promoted,” Tarnowski said. “It was probably the right decision for my family in that point of time, and I don’t regret leaving, but had I been a man, I don’t think the same outcome would have transpired.”

However, Tarnowski said her experiences in the military have greatly affected her view of life. “I would not trade it for the world because it is very rewarding. You completely understand what the level of commitment means and how different that can be from civilian life. It makes you appreciate the smaller things in life.”

She also advised aspiring and current young women in the Army to be conscious and careful. “Be cognizant that your actions have a direct reflection not only on yourself, but on others.” SNT

Amazon is looking for a second home.

And New York state, particularly the upstate region, has joined many other parts of the country in showcasing their individual neighborhoods as the hip place to be.

The online retail giant announced in September that it is searching for a place in North America to build its second headquarters, the first of which is in Seattle. Commonly referred to as “HQ2,” the company plans to invest $5 billion in building and developing its second home and to create 50,000 jobs, most of them new.

The company has been flooded with some 238 proposals from cities all over the United States, pitching what makes them the best location for HQ2, and of course, what business incentives they offer the internet corporation. Proposals were due on Oct. 19.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration advanced proposals from four regions of the state: New York City, Albany, Central New York and the Mohawk Valley, and a combined Buffalo-Rochester package.

Amazon is looking for a suburban or urban location with a metropolitan population of at least 1 million people within close proximity to major highways and an international airport, with direct access to mass transit. It also needs to be a strong epicenter for respected colleges and universities.

And while the cities of upstate New York lack some of these qualities, they have done a pretty decent job at advertising their unique strengths for HQ2.

Rochester and Buffalo tout their combined university infrastructure, including a number of their college alumni who already work at Amazon. They also pitch their considerable amount of real estate options and high rankings for quality of life. Albany is proposing up to 8 million square feet of office space straddling the Hudson River between Albany and the neighboring city of Rensselaer, as well as showcasing the region’s focus on technological innovation.

What does Central New York have to offer? A combined Syracuse and Utica-Rome metropolitan area package highlighted the region’s affordable cost of living and low cost of operation, as well as its newly shared interest in the

drone industry, something Amazon has invested significantly in lately, as it hopes to use the devices to deliver packages in the future. Syracuse also took a unique approach and used its high poverty rate among African Americans and Hispanics to stress a necessity for mass job creation.

There’s a lot here to encourage Amazon to seriously consider any one of these areas in upstate New York for HQ2. What we should not encourage, however, is the way we are doing the offering.

New York state is dangling a package of tax breaks and business incentives in front of Amazon. The only problem is we have no idea what is in that package.

Empire State Development, the agency that coordinated the proposal to Amazon, is keeping secret those incentives, arguing that releasing that information to the public would jeopardize New York’s efforts against other states.

True as that may be, these are public dollars the state is playing with. The cost of the tax breaks we’re offering could total millions, even billions, of dollars.

That’s not something that should be kept behind closed doors.

The most detailed public information we have is that the submissions sent to Amazon “are supported by a full complement of state incentives, including Excelsior tax credits tied to potential job creation and other assistance with the development of office space, workforce development, educational programming and research collaborations,” which was written in an Oct. 19 press release from Cuomo’s office.

Other states seem to have no problem releasing the financial specifics of their proposals. In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie publicly released that the state is

offering $7 billion in tax breaks over the next 20 years should Amazon select the city of Newark for HQ2.

If HQ2 does come to New York, we may never know if what we paid outweighs the benefits from it. New York spends $8 billion every year on economic development projects, but they have continuously produced lackluster results.

That might explain the state’s reluctance to hold businesses accountable for what they promise in exchange for incentives, and it might explain the state’s regular stonewalling of reports evaluating if those promises are kept.

Indeed, state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli has claimed before that many economic development efforts have not only failed to create anywhere near the number of jobs forecast, but that Empire State Development didn’t even have any reporting standards in place to hold companies benefiting from tax breaks to their job number promises.

In several cases, Empire State Development actually lowered the job-creation requirements for individual companies after their numbers were released so it would appear like they matched their requirements.

If the state plays these types of games with our own programs, there’s no reason to believe it wouldn’t do the same with a massive corporate expansion from Amazon.

It is unlikely that upstate New York will ultimately be selected for HQ2, although Moody’s Analytics recently listed Rochester in the top five among those competing.

But even if it isn’t selected, New Yorkers deserve to know what price we’re offering. And if it is selected, we deserve to know if that price was worth paying. SNT

GETTING CRAFTY WITH YULETIDE GIFTS

O

n the one hand, there’s a world of overcrowded malls, news reports regarding which stores are open on Thanksgiving, and mass-produced goods. On the other, there’s a shopping circuit emphasizing hand-crafted items made by independent artists and artisans. Here’s a preview of that circuit in the Syracuse area.

Art Mart, at age 63, shows no sign of slowing down. It’s a cooperative of 40 local artists who band together to create a marketplace for six weeks during the holiday season. They split the rent for a storefront at 499 S. Warren St. and work a total of 15 hours on site to keep the operation going.

As in past years, there’s a variety of work on sale: Rebecca Wing’s ceramics, individualized pillows by Penny Stoffle, David McKenney’s glassworks, Judy Lieblein’s jewelry, and photos

by Nancy Kieffer, who shoots scenes in Central New York, the Finger Lakes region, and the Adirondacks. Mossi Village, a trio of artists including Cathy Lobdell, Jackee Johnson and Vanessa Johnson, creates items with distinctive patterns, including blouses, coasters and scarves.

presenting a shopping opportunity one week before Christmas.

This isn’t the only cooperative operating downtown. In Armory Square at 201 Walton St., Infinite Pop brings together 31 artists who split a rental expense and responsibility for staffing the seasonal venue. The items on display are diverse: Rebecca Wing’s ceramics, fine-art prints by Dan Bingham, Amber Blanding’s glass pieces and Sara Seib’s candles. Michael Gaut, a.k.a. Mic Tha Poet, is selling books of poetry and artworks; he’s a skilled writer and performer at poetry-slam events.

And Kara Cook is displaying pieces from her “Abandoned Spaces” series, which references abandoned buildings. One of her works shows the movie theater Cinema North in an advanced state of decay. That structure opened in 1965, was closed and neglected, ultimately getting demolished last August.

Infinite Pop is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to

8 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m. There are going to be poetry readings and music at the pop-up shop. This is the second year for the project, the brainchild of Michael John Heagerty.

Plowshares, organized by the Syracuse Peace Council, takes place Dec. 2 and 3 at Nottingham High School, 3100 E. Genesee St. It’s a jumbo-size festival combining work by 110 crafters and artists, food catered by The Mission restaurant, and tables staffed by groups such as Alliance for a Green Economy and the Worker’s Center of CNY. Objects on sale include Christy Lemp’s watercolors, Gary Quirk’s ceramic tiles, jewelry by Michelle Darin and Barb Floch, eatables such as Magda Bayoumi’s baklava and Lillie Harris’ pies and cookies.

Ken Nichols, who will be selling mugs, bowls and votives, says holiday-time events have multiple benefits: It’s an opportunity to sell items during a primetime period, and a chance to build connections to consumers. “In the summertime, I have a booth at City Market on the Everson Museum Plaza,” he said. “I run into people who say they saw my stuff at Plowshares.”

Plowshares runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 2 and from noon to 5 p.m. on Dec. 3. Admission is $2 to $5 on a sliding scale, free for those 65 or older, or younger than 16. Proceeds benefit the Peace Council.

ArtRage Gallery, 505 Hawley Ave., will host its seventh annual Fair Trade Sale, which displays goods made by cooperatives in Guatemala. Textiles and decorations, candles and coffee will be for sale.

The event is slated for Dec. 8, 3 to 7 p.m., and Dec. 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

From the Earth Arts and Crafts Festival will be held on Dec. 9, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Onondaga Nation School, Route 11A, Nedrow. Baskets, pottery, beadwork, silver work and wood lacrosse sticks made by master stickmaker Alf Jacques will all be on sale. There will be performances by Onondaga singers and dancers.

AFFIRMING LIFE FOR KITCHEN’S INNOVATIVE COMEDY

T

he words “includes audience participation” can provoke the same wariness in a playgoer that “some assembly required” do in a gift-giving parent. Will you become the tongue-tied stooge of an intrusive performer just for sitting in the wrong place?

In Duncan Macmillan’s new play Every Brilliant Thing, running through Dec. 10 at Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre Company, perhaps 20 audience members sitting in different places get into the act, but most of the time it’s painless, like reading a one-syllable word, on cue, off a Post-it note. But the dialogue between player and audience, the complete deletion of a fourth wall, is unlike any other play ever to appear in these parts.

Macmillan, a hot British youngster still in his 30s, is known for accessible, audience-friendly material and radically innovative packages. His Lungs (March 2014),

a love story, is set on an absolutely bare stage where actors had to prowl around without so much as a single taped marker on the floor. He’s part of the school called the Apathists along with fellow Britisher Mike Bartlett. Their nearest American ally would be Annie Baker.

For the first 15 minutes of Brilliant, it doesn’t feel like watching a drama at all.

The already intimate Kitchen Theatre has erected more seats on the stage so that the performance space, now in the round, is at the widest, no more than 12 feet across.

favorite in Ithaca, is still handing out Post-it notes as he begins the dialogue Macmillan has written. When an audience member breaks into an (apparently unscripted) extended coughing fit, he consoles her without dropping a beat. Most of the audience knows him, dressed casually in a plaid overshirt, and we’re never quite sure when he ceases to be Karl and becomes the protagonist.

We’re into the action when we hear the resonant date, Nov. 9, 1986, repeated several times. The protagonist’s mother attempted suicide, a shattering experience for an 8-year-old. Most of the action, including the interaction with the audience, is a means of responding to this trauma.

But whose trauma?

A little legwork reveals that Macmillan based the play on a short story titled “Sleeve Notes,” and he appears to have been born about 1980. But in the three years the play was in development at venues like the Edinburgh Fringe, where it was a huge hit, the protagonist was played

by Jonny Donahue, a roly-poly comedian with a working-class accent. Donohue not only took the role to New York City and several U.S. cities, but his name is cited on the program, not as co-author, but a more tentative “ . . . with Jonny Donahue.” Yes. Comedian. Brilliant confronts suicide and depression with comedy.

With the help of veteran Kitchen director Wendy Dann, the role is tailored to fit Karl Gregory. He speaks the lines with American stage diction in American idioms. When he and a lover repair to a gay retreat it’s Provincetown, not some spa in the United Kingdom.

The most British part of the play is the word “brilliant” in the title. We tend to

inflate it to denote conspicuous excellence, as in Einstein was brilliant. In Britain it can mean merely satisfying, apt or spot-on.

Thus when the protagonist asks for consoling things that make life preferable to suicide, the “brilliant” list begins modestly: Ice cream. Water fights. Staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV. The color yellow. He acknowledges that these are things an 8-year-old might crave. Thus brilliant things need not be extraordinary, like dinner at Maxim’s or climbing Mount Everest, but they can include the arts. The narrator favors black American singers like Billie Holiday, and even more Ray Charles’ “Drown in My Own Tears.”

The monologue examines some of the romantic appeal of suicide, which is traced back to J.W. von Goethe’s Sorrows of Young Werther and the dreadful beguilement of celebrity suicides like Marilyn Monroe’s. Death’s beckoning arises from more than disappointment or a sense of worthlessness.

Optimism has a poor reputation among intellectuals, but has fared better in popular culture. Irving Berlin’s 1954 hit “I Count My Blessings (Instead of Sheep)” anticipates Macmillan’s intentions, but it’s a bit sappy. Every Brilliant Thing grabs you by the lapels and makes you laugh and listen. The audience is pulled in, even the woman who must remove one shoe and one sock and turn that sock into a hand puppet. Karl Gregory, a dynamic comic actor instead of a mere comic, argues for life, even up to a million brilliant things. SNT

ORANGE FROSH WILL DEFINE THE HOOPS SEASON

T

hrough the early part of this college basketball season, you could make the argument that the Syracuse University men’s basketball team has improved along with the quality of its opponents. And that’s a good thing, because the schedule is about to get a lot tougher.

The Orange opened this season with wins over Cornell, Iona, Texas Southern and Oakland. Cornell is a middle-of-the-pack Ivy League team, Iona (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) and Texas Southern (Southwestern Athletic Conference) are mid-majors that made the 2017 NCAA Tournament, and Oakland was the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League.

And on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 7 p.m., at the Carrier Dome, the Orange will continue its march through the mid-majors when it plays a Toledo team from the Mid-American Conference that defeated Oakland 87-74 Nov. 18 as part of the round-robin Hoophall Miami Invitational that also includes Syracuse, Texas Southern and Kansas.

After Toledo, the Orange faces a three-game gauntlet against Maryland in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge Monday at the Dome, No. 4 Kansas Dec. 2 in the Hoophall Miami Invitational championship game in Miami, and Connecticut Dec. 5 in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“I feel like these young guys are getting more experience out there and every game we’re getting better,” said Geno Thorpe, a senior graduate transfer from South Florida. “We’re making mistakes but we’re able to learn from our mistakes and coach (Jim Boeheim) is obviously, you know, on our young guys and me especially about making the right play. So I think by the time our schedule gets a little harder we’ll be prepared.”

Having lost six key players from last year’s team (Tyler Lydon, Andrew White, John Gillon, Taurean Thompson, DaJuan

Coleman and Tyler Roberson), the Orange entered this season with only one returning starter — guard Tyus Battle — and a lot of question marks. In the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference media poll, Syracuse was picked to finish 10th in the 15-team league — the lowest the Orange had ever been selected in all its years in the Big East Conference and ACC. But so far, the Orange has overcome an inexperienced roster that includes only three players who appeared in a game for Syracuse last season (Battle, point guard Frank Howard and center Paschal Chukwu). Battle has been spectacular, Howard’s shot and decision-making are improving and the 7-2 Chukwu has given SU size and a shot-blocking threat in the middle of its 2-3 zone defense.

Freshman forward Oshae Brissett is oozing with potential, freshman center Bourama Sidibe is pushing Chukwu for more playing time, and freshman forward Marek Dolezaj has become a fan favorite as “he goes after the ball better than anybody on our team,” Boeheim said. Watching Dolezaj and Sidibe run the high-low on offense as freshmen makes you wonder what they can accomplish as seniors if they stay that long.

Redshirt freshman forward Matthew Moyer and freshman guard Howard Washington are still finding their way, while Thorpe flashed his promise with 13 first-half points against Texas Southern while Battle sat on the bench with two fouls. Thorpe had been bothered by an ankle injury at the start of the season and said he’s “still working my way back.”

While this year’s team won’t match the offensive firepower of last year’s squad, it appears that it will play far better defense.

The Orange limited Cornell to 25 percent shooting and Iona to 36 percent before Texas Southern shot 44.9 percent in a game Syracuse led by 22 midway through the second half before winning 80-67.

Against Oakland, the Orange cooled off guards Kendrick Nunn and Martez Walker, who entered the game averaging a combined 52.3 points per game. Walker and Nunn combined for 26 points and 27.5 percent shooting (8 for 29).

“We’re bigger at the guard spot and we’re moving up on the shooters better than we did last year,” Boeheim said after the Oakland game. “We discouraged them from taking them, and when they got in the post they have to deal with Paschal in there.”

Battle, whose spin move along the baseline and thunderous dunk against Texas Southern will make NBA scouts drool, said the team is improving but cautioned that the young players will have their ups and downs.

“We’re still learning, so there’s going to be some bumps in the road,” Battle said after the Texas Southern game. “We’re so young and it’s the first time we’re playing together, but I definitely see our improvement over the last three games.”

How much they’ve improved is about to be tested against Maryland (5-0, including a win over Butler), powerhouse Kansas, and a 5-1 Connecticut team that upset the Orange 52-50 last year at the Garden.

Looking ahead, and knowing how the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee has emphasized non-conference wins and losses in recent years, this stretch could help determine whether the Orange makes the NCAA Tournament.

“That’s why I came to a school like this, a big school, so I could play those big games,” Brissett said. “Everyone’s excited, we’re ready to play those big and better teams and then we’ll really know who we are as a unit. Everyone’s excited for that.”

No Bowling for SU Football

After the Syracuse football team’s 27-24 upset of then-No. 2 Clemson Oct. 13, the 4-3 Orange appeared to be a lock to win two of its final five games and reach a bowl game for the first time in four years.

But after getting blasted by Louisville 56-10 Nov. 18, the Orange is still looking for its fifth win and now won’t qualify for a bowl game even if it defeats Boston College on Saturday, Nov. 25, 12:20 p.m., at the Dome.

Saturday’s season finale is Senior Day and will include a salute to the 2017 senior class that includes such stalwarts as wide receivers Steve Ishmael and Erv Phillips, linebackers Zaire Franklin and Parris Bennett, and kicker Cole Murphy.

B&B Lounge’s upcoming closure signals more change in the neighborhood

In November 1989, two Billy Rays got together and opened up the B&B Cocktail Lounge at 310 South Ave. Billy Ray “Little Bill” Denham and Billy Ray “Big Bill” McDonald had met at work at Carrier Corporation. “We wanted to make a statement to the community,” Little Bill recalls. The South Side destination will close Dec. 30 following a 28-year run.

The location had previously housed Otto’s, with a primarily Caucasian clientele, but the neighborhood was changing to predominantly African-American. The Tippin’ Inn, having moved from East Fayette and Beech streets, had already established itself as a “black bar” two blocks down the street.

“We wanted a place that all people could hang out and have a good time and meet and conversate with friends,” says Little Bill. “That was our goal. We didn’t want no club or hotspot. Over the years we got to be a landmark.”

“The first time I came here,” Samuel U. Adams remembers of the B&B’s opening night, “I wasn’t the first one that paid a dollar but I bought a couple pitchers of beer. I came in the following weekend and have been hanging ever since. I live next door.”

Tiana Tyler remembers the first drink she made as a bartender seven years ago. She messed it up. “People who come in here regular are more than regulars,” she says. “It’s like a family. Your second family.”

“We’re like family,” Adams agrees. “And like any family, they cuss you out, you get mad at them, you cuss them out. But you know that these are your people.”

“It’s like a home away from home,” says Terrie Green, a B&B patron since its opening. “I can say that out of the 28 years I’ve been coming we’ve probably only had maybe six months of bad times.”

when he turned 21. “Everybody gets along,” he says. “You learn advice, they teach you things, they give you wisdom.”

“Can you imagine how many people that worked at B&B Lounge have progressed their education?” Little Bill asks. “They worked here. Some of them became lawyers. I have a few people that worked here and ended up being nurses. People that worked here have ended up owning their own businesses.”

“We built this place,” Little Bill maintains. “We put this place in action as a community place.”

The many community activities sponsored by the B&B include the Baby Boomers Basketball League, several bowling leagues, and the Syracuse Golf Association junior program.

One member of the Syracuse Golf Association, Barbara Moon, taught at Blodgett and Fowler schools before retiring. She often finds herself the only white person at the B&B. “I’m the only white spot in there a lot of times,” she says. “But to me it’s a very diverse bar. What I love about it is that everybody is welcome. All different stripes come through there. And diverse in terms of age. There’s professional people, there’s working people. It’s just a great mix.

“I know one thing for sure. B&B has been part of the solution and not the problem.

They have not been treated fairly in the paper (the thrice-weekly Post-Standard) all the time. If something happens in a 10-block radius, B&B’s name and the picture of the front of the bar gets flashed on the screen.

“One of the best nights of my life was the first time Barack Obama got elected. It was like there couldn’t have been a better place on Earth to be than to be at B&B that night. ’Cause you know, a lot of the older folks in there are from down South. They grew up

under Jim Crow laws. When I look back at that, I feel privileged to have been a part of that.

“So I can’t really explain my own set there. I just know I feel a part of it. It’s where we go after a funeral when you don’t want to go home yet. You just want to be around people that knew where we go.”

“People love coming here because we do know how to deal with people,” Little Bill explains. “We know how to treat people. Over the years people come to me and come to Bill: ‘How can you guys do this? How can you stay in business so long and never get shut down?’”

Last month, however, the two Billy Rays announced that the B&B will be closing at the end of the year. What happened?

“It was a lot of fun up until about five or six years ago,” Big Bill says. “Then everything changes. Community changes, people change, we changed. We get older.

You get a little bit more wiser so things is a lot different. One of the different things is myself. I’m 74 years old. I don’t have that energy anymore to do these things.”

For Little Bill, the changes reflect what is happening in the neighborhood. “Back in the 1970s, back in the 1980s, we was dealing with baby boomers. And baby boomers are definitely a great group of people. They were young, energetic, working, had jobs, and they were patronizing businesses. But now things have changed. The baby boomer is my age and older, 70, 75, or 80. So they are not coming out anymore.

“And you got this young generation and everything is totally different. We don’t want to cater to the young generation.

They say you have to change with time and we changed with time, but we refused to change 100 percent. The crowd is out of my hand.”

“This is my neighborhood that I’ve grown up in since the age of 10,” Green explains. “At one point in time I could walk to the bar and walk back home late and there wasn’t any issues. But now since time has changed I won’t do that.”

“When B&B first got here it was a beautiful neighborhood,” Adams observes.

“Everybody got along. Everybody came to this bar. Came here on every holiday, every party, every Christmas, every anniversary. Owners’ birthdays, barmaids and bartenders’ birthdays.

“But it’s the fact that what’s going on in the street can destroy any business, especially if you can’t control it. They’ve been struggling for those past three years. You don’t want it to leave here but all good things come to an end.”
