IN THIS ISSUE CENTRAL NEW YORK WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Once upon a time, Black Friday conjured nightmares of fisticuffs, campouts and trampling in an attempt to get some of the best shopping deals of the year. Although there are still flareups (two men were stabbed on the notorious holiday at Destiny USA), the rise of weekendlong doorbusters and Cyber Monday seem to have taken some of the edge off the mad dash from the dinner table to the mall parking lot. How many of you head out for Black Friday? If not, when or where else do you prefer to do your holiday shopping? Let us know in our poll! How often do you go out shopping on Black Friday?

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED

Among the gazillion other products and services available from Amazon is the behemoth’s facial recognition software, Rekognition, marketed as providing extremely accurate facial analysis. But when the American Civil Liberties Union gave it a go, the results were startling. Using Rekognition, the ACLU scanned photos of every current member of the U.S. House and Senate and came up with 28 matches to a mug shot database of people who had been arrested for crimes. The ACLU announced its findings July 26 and admitted it used Amazon’s default settings, to which Amazon responded, “While 80 percent confidence is an acceptable threshold for photos of hot dogs, chairs, animals or other social media use cases,” Amazon would advise customers to set the threshold at 95 percent or higher for law enforcement. The ACLU told NPR that the legislators who were falsely matched were men, women, Republicans and Democrats of all ages. However, the software did misidentify people of color at a higher rate.

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW

Armed thieves in New Delhi, India, left a craftsman deep in debt after they made off with 500 pounds of wigs and raw hair worth more than $20,000 on July 27, according to the Associated Press. “People think wigs are cheap, but they cost a fortune to make,” wig-maker Jahangir Hussain said. In fact, he had borrowed more than $17,000 to buy hair last month from South Indian wholesalers. India exports wigs and hair extensions to the tune of $300 million a year; much of the raw materials are collected at Hindu temples where people shave their heads as a religious sacrifice, a practice called tonsuring.

UNFRIENDLY SKIES

Chicago cellist Jingjing Hu, a student at the DePaul University School of Music, found herself being escorted off an American Airlines flight on Aug. 2 after trying to return to Chicago from Miami with her instrument. Hu paid in advance for an extra seat for her cello, worth almost $30,000 and housed in a hard case, Jen Sorensen

and had no trouble on her flight from Chicago to Miami, where she participated in a music festival. But on her return trip, after boarding the Boeing 737 and settling herself and her cello into their seats, a flight attendant approached her and told her she would have to leave the plane because the aircraft was too small for her instrument. Hu was booked on a flight the next day on a 767. American blamed the incident on a “miscommunication,” according to WBBM-TV, but Hu’s husband, Jay Tang, said, “I don’t think we did anything wrong here, and I think the way they handled it was humiliating.”

PROBLEM-SOLVER

The list of offenses was long when Franklyn Williams, 32, appeared in Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Common Pleas Court on July 31 to be sentenced for aggravated robbery, kidnapping, theft, misuse of credit cards and more — including cutting off his ankle bracelet late last year and fleeing to Nebraska, where he claimed he was hit over the head and lost his memory. But it was his courtroom behavior that spurred Judge John Russo to call for an extreme measure: During the hearing, Williams would not stop talking, even interrupting his own lawyers repeatedly over about 30 minutes. Finally, Russo ordered deputies to tape the defendant’s mouth shut, reported FOX 8 in Cleveland. Williams continued to talk until deputies applied more tape, and finally Russo sentenced him to 24 years in prison.

SO MANY QUESTIONS

When an employee of Sarabeth’s restaurant in New York City opened the walk-in freezer door on Aug. 5, a man jumped out, yelling, “Away from me, Satan!” and grabbed a knife from the kitchen, which he used to threaten restaurant staff. Carlton Henderson, 54, of Cave Creek, Arizona, struggled with workers but eventually fell unconscious and was transported to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, The New York Post reported. Authorities don’t know (1) why and how he entered the freezer and (2) why he died, but they did determine he was charged last year with two 1988 cold-case murders in Boston. He had been released on bail the week before

the freezer incident and was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 14.

THE NOSE KNOWS

West Valley City, Utah, has a malodorous mystery on its hands. The community stinks, and for the past year, officials have been fielding complaints about the smell, which city communications director Sam Johnson described as “a musty sewer smell that you can smell in certain parts of the city stronger,” according to FOX 13. The city has now launched a campaign recruiting residents to help pinpoint the source of the odor: “If you smell something, say something.” They’re hoping more complaints will spur Salt Lake County and Utah’s Department of Environmental Quality to investigate and take action.

NEWS LEAK

In Paris, the designer of a recently installed “urinoir,” a sidewalk urinal, on the Ile Saint-Louis, says the new device offers “an eco solution to public peeing.” But Reuters reports that nearby residents and business owners are unhappy about the urinals, saying they are “immodest and ugly” and will “incite exhibitionism.” The “Uritrottoir,” a mash-up of the French words for urinal and sidewalk, looks much like a plastic trash receptacle, and local mayor Ariel Weil says they’re necessary: “If we don’t do anything, then men are just going to pee in the streets.”

SPELLING BEE

Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado, is footing the bill for a possible $46,000 reprint job after a recent graduate found a typo on his diploma. Alec Williams, former editor of the school’s newspaper, was examining his sheepskin when he found a line reading “Coard of Trustees,” instead of “Board of Trustees” under one of the signatures. “There was this moment of laughing at it. . . and the more I thought about it, the more frustrated I got, because I’m sitting on $30,000 worth of debt and they can’t take the time to use spellcheck,” he said. CMU president Tim Foster told The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel that the school will send out corrected diplomas to 2018 grads — but the typo goes back to 2012 diplomas. Those graduates can request a new diploma if they want to. “This mistake is all ours,” he said. syracusenew times.com | 11.28.18 - 12.4.18

Open House and BIGGEST SALE of the year! Dec. 2, 1:30-5:30

Almost $3 billion. That’s what New York state and New York City will be giving in tax breaks to Amazon as it plants half of its second headquarters in the Big Apple. The state alone will be granting $1.53 billion in tax credits and grants. That will help fund, among other things, a new helipad for CEO Jeff Bezos. After more than a year of fierce competition, Amazon recently announced it will split its second headquarters between Arlington, Virginia, and the neighborhood of Long Island City in Queens. The online retail giant promises to create 25,000 jobs in New York City, most of them new. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been giddy about the prize, calling it “one of the largest, most competitive economic development investments in U.S. history.” Yet the same governor who has spent the last year railing against the new federal tax law — calling it a tax break for corporations and the rich — is now fine with giving tax breaks to a trillion-dollar corporation whose CEO is the richest man in the world. The same governor who calls himself a champion of labor and livable wage is fine with giving tax breaks to a company that just weeks ago was pressured to raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour because thousands of people who work for one of the richest companies in history are living on food stamps. Despite the image of an open competition that flooded Amazon with 238 proposals from cities across the United States with pitches on what makes them the best location for its second headquarters, we always knew that New York City was on the company’s shortlist. The city has all the things the company wants: a huge metropolitan area with direct access to major highways, international airports and a mass transit system, as well as close proximity to prestigious colleges and universities that can provide the career talent in the technology sector that Amazon requires. Amazon played the nation for suckers. Many hoped that this would be the opportunity of a lifetime for a small city in the Midwest or the South that has been left behind by a changing economy fueled by companies like Amazon. Yet the king of online retail is instead taking billions of dollars to move into the corporate capital city of the world. The economic irony is already being

played in upstate New York. On the same day that Cuomo and downstate lawmakers were celebrating Amazon’s announcement, Major League Baseball cap manufacturer New Era Cap Co. announced it would be closing its Buffalo-area factory, putting 200 people out of work, and legal services firm Thomson Reuters announced the shuttering of its Rochester office, cutting 304 jobs. Where is their gigantic tax break? Cuomo and city officials say that the income taxes Amazon will pay, along with its investments, will eventually result in billions of dollars in new state revenue that will dwarf the billions of dollars in incentives we are providing. We’ve heard this story before: New York is the king of using sweeteners to drive business development. The state spends approximately $8 billion a year on job-creation programs — more than any other state — and yet a lot of that money continuously goes to initiatives that in many cases fall far short of expectations. The Empire Zones program gave big benefits to companies but many of them didn’t return the favor by providing new jobs or investments. The Start-Up NY program, which provides 10-year tax breaks for companies and their employees, cost $53 million just in advertising and has only created a handful of jobs. And the Las Vegas-style casinos that were supposed to revitalize upstate New York are seeking bailouts because they aren’t making the mountains of revenue that the government boasted they would. Cuomo predicted Amazon would generate $27.5 billion in new state revenue over the next 25 years, but that figure relies on Amazon creating 40,000 new jobs in New York City — far more than the initial 25,000 that it has promised. That calculation also factors in the number of employees that other businesses will have to hire to fill the needs of Amazon’s new second home, which also may be way overestimated. That very well represents the fundamental flaw in this Amazon deal. We really have no idea what we’re getting, we only know how much we’re paying for it. Maybe that doesn’t mean too much to our state leaders or Jeff Bezos and his helipad, but when billions of dollars in taxpayer money is involved, we are right to be concerned. SNT

GETTING CRAFTY FOR YULETIDE GIFTS

E

ven in an era of 21st-century technology, artists and artisans still make things by hand and still seek audiences for their work. Over the next month, various local venues will showcase hand-crafted items. Here’s a survey of six of those sites.

Art Mart, now in its 64th year, offers pottery by Marcus Acervedo and Michael Greenfield, Johanna Wall’s jewelry, and Nancy Kieffer’s photos of outdoor scenes such as Fillmore Glen, a state park. Look for David McKenney’s glass jewelry, Sue Murphy’s oils and watercolors, and Vanessa Johnson’s mixed-media fetish doll. These and other artists are part of a holiday-time cooperative that divides up shifts and the expense of renting a space at 499 S. Warren St. Art Mart is open Mondays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Sunday hours on Dec. 9, the day of the Holidays in the City event. Art Mart runs through Dec. 24. Wildflowers Armory, 225 W. Jefferson St., employs a hybrid pop-up model. The shop operates at one location but has some changes in its roster of artists. Every three months, some artists stay on board and some go. There’s a group dynamic in place; participants work shifts, pay rent for their individual space, and donate a percentage from sales. Wildflowers, which springs from previous pop-up sites originated by Michael John Hegearty, features prints by Maria Vallese, Ryan Wood and Cayetano Valenzuela, as well as M.A. Gaut’s poetry, Dan Bingham’s nature-influenced works, and Jenna Paulson’s paintings and prints. It’s open Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m. The Eureka Company, better known as Eureka Crafts, has operated year-round at 210 Walton St. since 1983. The shop displays ceramic work by Ken Nichols and Ann Bliss Pilcher, woodworks by Tom Hourican and Dan Romagnoli, Tom Stoenner’s glassworks and Sharon Alama’s jewelry. Specialty items include Mike Fisher’s piece with a clock set into wood, and Mike Mikutowski’s “possibility boxes,” small wood boxes inscribed

with quotes from John Lennon, Gandhi and other sources. Eureka is open Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. From the Earth CraftsFair, at the Onondaga Nation School, takes place Saturday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It features varied works by indigenous artists: paintings and sculptures, beadwork and baskets, jewelry and wood lacrosse sticks. Traditional and nontraditional foods will be served, and Onondaga dancers and singers will perform. The Plowshares Craftsfair and Peace Festival runs Saturday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 2, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Nottingham High School. The event combines works by more than 120 artists, food served by the Mission Restaurant, and tables staffed by peace and social-justice organizations including the Syracuse Peace Council and Alliance for a Green Economy. Its roster of artists includes Tom Huff, who creates stone and clay sculptures; Betsy Menson Sio, creator of tin jewelry; and Carol Crolick, who makes hand-crafted baskets. Plowshares is a fundraiser for the Peace Council; admission is $2 to $5, on a sliding scale. Finally, ArtRage Gallery, 505 Hawley Ave., hosts its annual Fair Trade Sale on Friday, Dec. 7, 3 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale, which has free admission, is intended to promote fair and ethical trade with handcrafters around the globe. The event will display quilts from India, textiles from Guatemala, and coffee, ceramics and additional items from other nations. Some of the items come via ArtRage’s partnership with SERVV International, the grandmother of alternative trade groups. It was founded in 1949 to help refugees after World War II. TRENCH BLENDS MUSICAL GENRES FOR DEBUT CD

n the basement of a formerly abandoned, now halfway-renovated factory on Syracuse’s West Side, a tiny room overflows with guitars, amps and microphones. The cramped space is illuminated by string lights hanging from exposed pipes. Wires corkscrew around the pieces of equipment, leaving only the occasional glimpse of carpet below. It is here that the local fourpiece band Trench rehearses. The space, although drafty and ramshackle, feels like home to 28-year-old Chris Reilly, Trench’s lead singer and guitarist. “I’ve been coming here for more than two years now,” he said. “This is where it all happens.” The outfit, which describes its style as “moody, ambient rock,” was founded in late 2015 by Reilly, who at the time was performing solo gigs around Central New York yet feeling uninspired. After years of painstakingly searching for the right lineup, he eventually assembled bandmates Bob Becerra, Ron Ballweber and

10

Dan Sanborn, and that’s when things fell right into place. Trench will celebrate their debut CD release, Ritual Love, with a show on Saturday, Dec. 1, 6 p.m., at the Lost Horizon, 5863 Thompson Road. The concert will also feature a set by Jimmy Stadt, frontman of Polar Bear Club, a post-hardcore band that originated in Syracuse and has gained national popularity, along with support from three local bands, Goodnight Forever, Difficult and Lily Grave. Admission is $10 in advance, $12 at the door. While Trench is currently flourishing within the local music scene, it was an uphill battle to get to this point. Three years ago, Reilly posted a flyer at Gorham Brothers Music store looking for other artists to form a band. By the time he arrived home from the shop, he already had received an email from local bassist Becerra. The two met to have a “preliminary jam session,” and immediately hit it off. The duo then began hunting for a drummer and a second guitarist to match their vibe, although this was not a smooth endeavor. “We had so many musicians come

11.28.18 - 12.4.18 | syracusenew times.com

and go,” Becerra recalled. “They either moved away or weren’t that interested and me and Chris were just left to pick up the pieces when people quit.” It wasn’t until 2017 when Reilly and Becerra hooked up with guitarist Ron Ballweber and drummer Dan Sanborn and began making music together. “It was the first time I felt really connected both musically and personally,” Reilly said. “Before it never really felt natural. I kind of felt like ‘you play this and you play this’ but everything felt solid once (Ron and Dan) came in. Now it feels like we’re actually playing off of each other instead of just in a room together. It’s like we finally have our true band.” Ritual Love features a shoegaze, rock and dream-pop blend of genres. The nine dynamic tracks on the LP are both loud and delicate, gritty and gentle, and exactly what Reilly, who is Trench’s primary songwriter, hoped his work would one day sound like. “I knew I had good material,” he said. “And once we got the right people to play it, it became exactly what I expected it could be.”

Scott Dixon, a deejay with WAQX-FM 95.7 (95X), has been playing Ritual Love on his Locals Only radio program since its release. The band credits their growth in the local music scene to Dixon’s unwavering support and the considerable airtime he gives them. “You can actually see how much hard work, love and dedication they put into their craft,” Dixon noted. “It’s refreshing. And it deserves to be rewarded with airplay and the ability to have someone (the band) can rely on in media to help get the word out about the music.” Trench has no plans of slowing down now that they have finally established their dream lineup. Even though Ritual Love just came out, there are already five or six songs that Reilly has begun working on. “I’m hoping that we can keep the momentum going and not wait too long to put something else out,” he said. “Now that we have our final form, it feels right.” SNT Alexa Piwowarski is a graduate student with the Goldring Arts Journalism program at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School.

SEASONAL CHEER FROM LOCAL MUSICMAKERS The Christmas season is a time for touring acts to bring their yuletide shows to Central New York, with everyone from Donny and Marie Osmond to Jim Brickman on the concert slate. Yet for those who want to add some local flavors to their musical schedule, the History of Syracuse Rock’n’Roll music series will host its annual holiday shindig on Sunday, Dec. 2, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Holiday Inn, 441 Electronics Parkway, Liverpool. Series producer Ron Wray again partners with morning-drive radio host Nick Caplan from The Dinosaur 95.3 FM for the event, which differs from the series’ usual menu of reunions featuring long-ago local groups. “The Christmas show is more of a spectacular,” Wray notes, “filled with entertainment, fun and dancing.” Leading the musical charge is Ménage À Soul, the longtime retro-funk outfit that was formerly known as The Coachmen — until a midsummer personnel change led to the band’s new name. The rest of the gang is still present and accounted for, however, including lead singer Kia Worrell, John Saltamach on trumpet and lead vocals, Michael Davis on organ and electric piano, Dave Frateschi on sax and flute, guitarist Dickie Cappotto, bassist

James Spivey and Rock Carbone on drums and vocals. Ménage À Soul’s songlist, featuring throbbing covers of Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music,” The O-Jays’ “Love Train,” Rick James’ “Give It To Me Baby” and many more, will ensure that there will be no parking on the dance floor. Aside from their sets, however, Ménage À Soul will also morph into the evening’s house band to lend support to a pair of other acts. Tom Gilbo, perhaps the area’s bestknown Elvis Presley specialist, will bring his swivel-hips show to the party, along with some seasonal rockers. Also on the bill will be the Blues Brothers Review, as musicians Eddie Riley and Bob Bowie will pay homage to the famed John Belushi-Dan Aykroyd Chicago blues routine. Ménage À Soul will provide backup for both, making them the hardest-working band in show business — at least for a couple of hours. Plus, they will also be sharing the stage for a musical cameo with Dino deejay Bob Brown. The History of Syracuse Rock’n’Roll’s Christmas party is co-presented by Hearth Cabinets, Subcat Studios, Safe Harbor Wills and Trusts and the Syracuse New Times. Admission is $10. Dinosaur Bar-B-Que co-founder John Stage celebrates 30 years of the Salt City’s classic rib joint BY RUSS TARBY

D

inosaur Bar-B-Que co-founder John Stage has outplayed the George Soros conglomerate. Or at least he outlasted it.

Last month, as he celebrated the 30th anniversary of Syracuse’s sauciest restaurant, which he co-founded here, Stage announced that he’d amicably ended a nearly decade-long partnership with Soros Strategic Partners, part of Soros Fund Management, LLC, an investment management firm said to be worth $30 billion, making it one of the most profitable companies in the hedge-fund industry. “I feel like I’m back in the game,” Stage told the Syracuse New Times. “Something went right with the universe.” Stage now owns about 56 percent of the Dinosaur, a multifaceted culinary concern that grew from an express takeout joint at North Franklin and West Willow streets to include eight restaurants across the Northeast, a line of bottled sauces and rubs, retail food packages, fiery fabric merchandise and a best-selling cookbook. These days, the Dinosaur employs some 900 cooks, servers, bartenders and office staffers across the Northeast. Stage shares co-ownership with Fresh Hospitality, a Southern company that now owns 30 percent of the Dinosaur. Longtime local investors remain as partners, including I. Stephen Davis, who makes Gianelli sausage, and Andrew Boucounis, who owns Andy’s Produce, and the eight managing partners at each restaurant also have a stake in their locations. Syracusans Nancy and Larry Luckwaldt, who came on board in 1990 to help capitalize the Dinosaur barroom, also maintain a small percentage. The Soros partnership started in 2008 when Stage befriended David Wassong and Mark Pinho from Soros Strategic Partners in New York City. After the Luckwaldts sold many of their shares to the conglomerate it soon took over majority ownership just as the Dinosaur was expanding into other markets. When Soros bought in, Stage still owned 25 percent of the action and had a say in most operations. But he no longer ruled the roost. Although the franchise generally thrived during its Soros years, it also suffered a few setbacks which Stage attributes to “an accelerated growth period.” Perhaps prompted by corporate ambition, more than a half-dozen new Dinosaur locations opened between 2010 and 2015. Two of those seven

new sites — restaurants in Chicago and Baltimore — shut down within a few years. “It was too much too soon,” Stage says. Stage, now 58, has been taking time recently to reflect on the passing years while looking forward to the future. And while the Syracuse restaurant may be celebrating three decades, Stage insists on delving deeper. “Actually it’s 35 years, when you count the road stuff,” he said, referring to those first few years from 1983 to 1988, when it was just him and his partners Mike Rotella and Dino (pronounced Deen-O), who demurs when asked to share his last name. So 35 years ago, motivated by the lack of good food at biker gatherings such as the annual Harley Rendezvous near Albany, the threesome sawed a 55-gallon oil drum in half length-wise, borrowed some secondhand restaurant equipment and hauled that jerry-rigged gear up and down the East Coast behind their howlin’ Harleys. At each destination, they grilled burgers, steaks and sausages. Dino — who dropped out as a partner in 1985 but has returned to function as Syracuse’s friendliest bouncer — maintains that the road-weary Dinosaur Productions was named after him despite the pronunciation difference. Stage doesn’t dispute Dino’s claim. After all, the bossman said, “Dino was an original partner and a big SOB to boot, so that seemed to fit.” But two other factors contributed to the monstrous moniker. One was the fact that John, Mike and Dino each rode “prehistoric” bikes. Stage owned a 1957 Panhead, Rotella had a 1967 Triumph and Dino rode a 1955 Flathead. “Then there was a Hank Williams Jr. song called ‘Dinosaur’ about a guy who revisits his favorite honky-tonk only to find, much to his chagrin, that they had turned it into a disco,” Stage said. “We could definitely relate.” In 1984 they changed the name to Dinosaur Concessions and started working state fairs and regional festivals, still serving three basic sandwiches — Italian sausage and peppers, hamburgers and sliced steak — and occasionally chicken. The following year, Dino moved to Arizona while Stage and Rotella perfected their own original slathering sauce, which they dubbed Story continued on page 15

the “Mutha Sauce.” So they changed the business name again, this time to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. But the constant roadwork took its toll. “During our midnight rides, our conversations kept turning toward owning our own joint,” Stage remembers. In 1987, they found “the perfect place”: the old N&H Tavern, a shot-and-beer bar operated by the late Tommy Hrim and frequented by bus drivers, cabbies and newspaper reporters. “The N&H served good home cooking and was located under the local motorcycle shop,” Stage said. “It was beautiful.” Stage and Rotella and their skeleton crews remained on the road in order to fund the remodeling needed at the N&H. One afternoon in Hagerstown, Maryland, an elderly Southerner asked them why they called their food Bar-B-Que. “Sure, he’d enjoyed his Delmonico steak sandwich with our special barbecue sauce on it,” Stage recalled, “but he said that wasn’t real barbecue.” No, the interloper explained, real barbecue was cooked slowly over hickory-wood fires in open and closed pits. For Stage, it was an epicurean epiphany! “It hit me that Mike and I were just two guys of Italian descent from Central New York,” Stage said. “What the hell did we know about real Southern barbecue? The

more this good ol’ boy went on, the more intrigued I became.” So Stage kick-started his Panhead and headed South. Starting in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Stage rolled on to North Carolina, Mississippi and finally Memphis, Tennessee, which he calls “the Shangri-la of barbecue.” There the Yankee pilgrim became a total convert to the Dixiefied process of slow-smoking meat in a hickory-wood-fired pit. Stage’s culinary conversion to “trueblue barbecue” would pay off plenty in the long run, but it didn’t happen overnight. He and Rotella — who has since retired to Florida — opened the place on Oct. 11, 1988, as the single-room, cafeteria-style Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Express. The partners kept dreaming the dream even though business remained excruciatingly slow until 1990 when the Luckwaldts joined up to open the second room, the barroom. Stage and Rotella tore out the old N&H bar and installed one that had previously done business at Farone’s restaurant on the North Side. The first house beer was Ape Hanger Ale by Middle Ages Brewing, and the first dinner special was Not Your Mama’s Meatloaf. Hip nostalgia set the scene as the interior walls of the Syracuse Dinosaur are busily bedecked with performance posters, rusty license plates, musicians’ photos, bawdy B-movie lobby cards, paintings

of classic blues greats by George Frayne (a.k.a. Commander Cody) and iconic offbeat murals created by Syracuse artists Jeff Davies and Elliott Mattice. And Stage remembers the first image he hung there: a humble charcoal portrait of a Native American girl still visible high in the southwest corner of the front dining area. The ambiance was awesome, and its soundtrack was American roots music. Synchronicity smiled on the Dinosaur one Thursday night in 1992 when Kelly James a.k.a. Dr. Blue played a live set, and the burgeoning Syracuse blues scene had a new place to call home. Live music is booked six and sometimes seven nights a week, showcasing top-notch local and touring blues acts. When the Syracuse New Times decided to celebrate the city’s blues scene in 1996, it invited scores of local musicians and roadies to pose for a classic photo inspired by Art Kane’s 1958 jazz photo, “A Great Day in Harlem.” The photo shoot for Michael Davis’ “A Blue Day in Syracuse” took place in front of the Dinosaur on the evening of June 17, 1996. It was published July 17. The marriage of blues and barbecue turned the Dinosaur into the place to be for everyone from citified yuppies to tattooed outriders, from jocks to jerks, from South Siders to suburbanites, from lawyers to losers. And the rest is history.

“You’ve got to remember that we started this whole thing back then when there was no internet, no barbecue cookbooks and barbecue was served exclusively below the Mason-Dixon Line,” Stage said. “Now in Brooklyn, there are seven barbecue joints within a one-mile radius. I’m sure we’ve influenced a few.” Two years ago, Stage and former Dinosaur employee Paulie Messina opened Apizza Regionale, at the former Mimi’s location across the street from the Syracuse Dinosaur. That project “rekindled my love for the restaurant business,” Stage said. “It was fun again.” And as Dinosaur’s majority shareholder now, he’s having fun again with the BarB-Que chain. “Right now, it’s all about looking inward,” he said. “The biggest thing is the culture.” Business experts define “culture” as a texture, a vibe, the heartbeat of a company. It’s something that lights up the entire system. “Our culture is our people,” Stage said. “That’s our special sauce! Our people are invested. I feel it personally. They feel it personally. We found that the restaurant biz was a lot like a Broadway show. When the curtain goes up, you better be ready. Our wait staff brings the show to the table. . . having fun and mingling with our customers. Our staff feeds on the down-to-earth, real-life vibe of the joint.” And so do those hungry customers! SNT

The yuletide season doesn’t really begin in Central New York until the Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place at downtown’s Clinton Square, as throngs of frigid onlookers gathered for the annual post-Turkey Day festivities on Nov. 23. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh (top left) got his first chance to flip the switch, and this year he was accompanied by movie actor Ian Petrella, who portrayed annoying kid brother Randy in the 1983 holiday classic A Christmas Story. A visit by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, musicmakers making merry and displays of ice skating rounded out the evening.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19) Every year the bird

known as the Arctic tern experiences two summers and enjoys more daylight than any other animal. That’s because it regularly makes a long-distance journey from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again. Let’s designate this hardy traveler as your inspirational creature for the next 11 months. May it help animate you to experiment with brave jaunts that broaden and deepen your views of the world. I don’t necessarily mean you should literally do the equivalent of circumnavigating the planet. Your expansive adventures might take place mostly in inner realms or closer to home.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) When the Ameri-

can Civil War began in 1861, the United States fractured. Four years later, the union was technically restored when the northern states defeated the southern states. At that time, African American slavery became illegal everywhere for the first time since the country’s birth decades earlier. But there was a catch. The southern states soon enacted laws that mandated racial segregation and ensured that African Americans continued to suffer systematic disadvantages. Is there a comparable issue in your personal life? Did you at sometime in the past try to fix an untenable situation only to have it sneak back in a less severe but still debilitating form? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to finish the reforms; to enforce a thorough and permanent correction.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Does an elusive

giant creature with a long neck inhabit the waters of Loch Ness in northern Scotland? Alleged sightings have been reported since 1933. Most scientists dismiss the possibility that “Nessie” actually exists, but there are photos, films and videos that provide tantalizing evidence. A government-funded Scottish organization has prepared contingency plans just in case the beast does make an unambiguous appearance. In that spirit, and in accordance with astrological omens, I recommend that you prepare yourself for the arrival in your life of intriguing anomalies and fun mysteries. Like Nessie, they’re nothing to worry about, but you’ll be better able to deal gracefully with them if you’re not totally taken by surprise.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Does moss real-

ly “eat” rocks, as Cancerian author Elizabeth Gilbert attests in her novel The Signature of All Things? Marine chemist Martin Johnson says yes. Moss really does break down and release elements in solid stone. Gilbert adds, “Given enough time, a colony of moss can turn a cliff into gravel, and turn that gravel into topsoil.” Furthermore, this hardy plant can grow virtually everywhere: in the tropics and frozen wastes, on tree bark and roofing slate, on sloth fur and snail shells. I propose that we make moss your personal symbol of power for now, Cancerian. Be as indomitable, resourceful and resilient as moss.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Let’s shout out a big

“THANKS!” and “HALLELUJAH!” to the enzymes in our bodies. These catalytic proteins do an amazing job of converting the food we eat into available energy. Without them, our cells would take forever to turn any particular meal into the power we need to walk, talk and think. I bring this marvel to your attention, Leo, because now is a favorable time to look for and locate metaphorical equivalents of enzymes: influences and resources that will aid and expedite your ability to live the life you want to live.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “Every dreamer

knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground,” writes author Judith Thurman. I’m guessing you will experience this feeling in the coming weeks. What does it mean if you do? It may be your deep psyche’s way of nudging you to find an energizing new sanctuary. Or perhaps it means you should search for fresh ways to feel peaceful and well-grounded. Maybe it’s a prod to push you outside your existing comfort zone so you can expand your comfort zone.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Venice, Italy, consists

of 118 small islands that rise from a shallow lagoon. A network of 443 bridges keeps them all connected. But Venice isn’t the world champion of bridges. The American city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds that title, with 446. I nominate these two places to be your inspirational symbols in the coming weeks. It’s time for you to build new metaphorical bridges and take good care of your existing metaphorical bridges.

Book your BACHELOR PARTY – our place or yours!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) To aid and sup-

port your navigation through this pragmatic phase of your astrological cycle, I have gathered counsel from three productive pragmatists. First is author Helen Keller. She said she wanted to accomplish great and noble things, but her “chief duty” was “to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.” Second, author George Orwell believed that “to see what is in front of one’s nose” requires never-ending diligence. Finally, author Pearl S. Buck testified that she didn’t wait around until she was in the right mood before beginning her work. Instead, she invoked her willpower to summon the necessary motivation.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Blackjack is

a card game popular in gambling casinos. In the eternal struggle to improve the odds of winning big money, some blackjack players work in teams. One teammate secretly counts the cards as they’re dealt and assesses what cards are likely to come up next. Another teammate gets subtle signals from his card-counting buddy and makes the bets. A casino in Windsor, Ontario, pressed charges against one blackjack team, complaining that this tactic was deceptive and dishonest. But the court decided in the team’s favor, ruling that the players weren’t cheating but simply using smart strategy. In the spirit of these blackjack teams, Sagittarius, and in accordance with astrological omens, I urge you to better your odds in a “game” of your choice by using strategy that is almost as good as cheating but isn’t actually cheating.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What has

become of the metaphorical seeds you planted during the weeks after your last birthday? Have your intentions flourished? Have your dreams blossomed? Have your talents matured? Have your naive questions evolved into more penetrating questions? Be honest and kind as you answer these inquiries. Be thoughtful and big-hearted as you take inventory of your ability to follow through on your promises to yourself. If people are quizzical about how much attention you’re giving yourself as you take stock, inform them that your astrologer has told you that December is Love Yourself Better Month.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) If you want to

play the drinking game called Possum, you and your friends climb up into a tree with a case of beer and start drinking. As time goes by, people get so hammered they fall out of the tree. The winner is the last one left in the tree. I hope you won’t engage in this form of recreation anytime soon—nor in any other activity that even vaguely resembles it. The coming weeks should be a time of calling on favors, claiming your rewards, collecting your blessings, and graduating to the next level. I trust your policy will be: no trivial pursuits, no wasted efforts, no silly stunts.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) In his song “Hap-

py Talk,” Academy Award-winning lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II offered this advice: “You gotta have a dream. If you don’t have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?” Where do you stand in this regard, Pisces? Do you, in fact, have a vivid, clearly defined dream? And have you developed a strategy for making that dream come true? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to home in on what you really want and hone your scheme for manifesting it. (P.S. Keep in mind Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s idea: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”)
