Curses, Foiled Again

Steven Gomez-Maya, 20, handed tellers at the TD Bank North in Seymour, Conn., a note on Aug. 19, demanding money. He apparently failed to notice that his note was written on the back of his girlfriend’s pay stub, and when he tried to return to the bank (presumably to retrieve the note), the doors were locked. Seymour police tracked down the owner of the pay stub, and when they arrived at the girlfriend’s home, they caught Gomez-Maya as he was driving away. The hat he wore during the robbery and “a large amount of $10 bills” were found in the car, and he was charged with first-degree robbery.

Criminal’s Remorse

An anonymous Australian tourist mailed back a small stone he lifted from the Cwmhir Abbey in Wales, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1176, in August.

The thief included a note explaining his remorse: “I have been an avid follower of the Welsh kings and their history, and so I took this rock. Ever since, I have had the most awful luck as if Llewellyn (sic) himself was angry with me.” Llywelyn ap

Gruffudd, the last native prince of Wales, was beheaded and buried at the abbey in 1282, and legend says his ghost haunts the abbey. The trust that manages the abbey put the returned stone and the note on display, presumably to deter future sticky-fingered visitors.

Compelling Explanation

Andrew Shaw, 44, of Lancashire, England, appeared before the Blackpool Magistrates Court on Aug. 29, facing three counts of possessing obscene images of children on his computer. Shaw and his wife arrived at the court with their guide dogs, as both are legally blind (Shaw has a small amount of sight in one eye). His attorney explained, “It may be argued that difficulty with his vision makes it difficult to put an age to images he downloads. He may think he is looking at 16-year-olds.” Shaw was granted bail.

Most news items about sinkholes highlight the large size of the hole. But a man in Brooklyn, N.Y., was trapped by a sinkhole in the middle of the street that was

just big enough to swallow his leg. Steven Suarez, 33, was making a delivery with a hand truck on Myrtle Avenue on Aug. 29 when his foot disappeared into the pavement. “I was scared,” Suarez said. “It was my whole entire right leg, up until my tailbone basically.” Suarez was trapped for nearly an hour as bystanders directed traffic around him and rescue workers tried to free him. Co-worker Joe Grunbaum, 32, said Suarez seemed to be in a lot of pain, but the only casualty of the incident turned out to be Suarez’s right sneaker.

In Wenzhou City, China, an 11-yearold boy underwent surgery in August to remove 26 magnetic Buckyballs from his penis. The balls caused a blockage in the boy’s urethra, which caused bleeding and swelling. He told pediatrician Wang Yongbiao that he put the toys in his penis because he was “curious.” (Bonus: The boy was identified in news reports as “Pi Pi.”)

A Turkish homeless man who was sentenced to house arrest in June has had his sentence altered to better reflect his circumstances. Baris Alkan, 31, had been confined to a specific area, an empty spot enclosed by metal plates, near a bus station after being detained for using and selling drugs. “I don’t have a home address, so I have to stay here,” he said.

“Even though I don’t have a house, I’m under house arrest.” The court subsequently lifted the house arrest order and now requires Alkan to sign in at a nearby police station once a month.

LOCAL COP COMEDY MERITS FREEBIE PALACE SCREENING

I

n a world full of superheroes, where does the average police officer fit? And what happens when one of these cops stumbles upon a conspiracy big enough to shake an entire city?

These are the questions co-directors Kevin Losani and Michael Widger set out to answer in Officer Pigsley, which is ready for its close-up Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre.

The film “speaks to the true heroism that’s not about the fame and glory,” said Widger, who around 2007 won Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys) in his rapper guise DooWiTTle. The producers call their action comedy a “dark, twisted thrill ride.” The trailer shows a collage of shots featuring underappreciated Officer Marvin Pigsley (Jody Pucello) as he tries to do his job in fictional Cusetown while being bested by flying superkids. Widger said there’s a theme of self-sacrifice that should leave viewers rooting for Pigsley as the film goes on.

The feature has been in development for about three years and was shot throughout the city of Syracuse and surrounding suburbs, Widger said. Although the movie was supposed to wrap earlier, the amount of post-production visual effects set them back. Yet he believes these images are what make Officer Pigsley one of the most ambitious flicks made locally.

Every sky in the movie is replaced by watercolor paintings made by Widger’s grandmother. A slew of green-screen explosions, flying vehicles and one scene

Widger also cites the number of authentic stunts in the film. The shooting schedule began before the Federal Aviation Administration cracked down on drone use, so Widger said many of the aerial shots over busy downtown Syracuse streets would be more difficult — if not impossible — to get in the present day. They also had an actual helicopter that flew near South Warren and Harrison streets, and several retired police cruisers on hand as Cusetown cop cars.

The film originally had a $2,000 budget, but with the number of things the moviemakers were able to borrow, have donated, or do themselves, such as costumes, sets and film editing, both Losani and Widger estimated Officer Pigsley probably would have cost closer to $10,000 to create.

“We challenged ourselves to really think limitlessly,” Widger said.

Officer Pigsley screens Tuesday, Dec. 17, 8 p.m., at the Palace Theatre, 2384 James St. Doors open at 7 p.m. with music from the film played by local alt-rockers Professional Victims. STATEWIDE CASINO EXPANSION COULD BE A RISKY BET Canadian singer-songwriter Ian Tyson once wrote about blackjack, “Never hit 17 when you play against the dealer, for the odds won’t ride with you.”

When it comes to its casino expansion initiative as a vehicle for economic prosperity, New York seems very eager to keep hitting. But it’s a gamble that, at the moment, doesn’t appear to be paying off.

Three new upstate commercial casinos opened this year: del Lago Resort and Casino in Waterloo; Rivers Casino and Resort in Schenectady; and Tioga Downs in the Southern Tier. All have failed to produce the amount of revenue that was initially predicted.

The three casinos are estimated to produce a combined $220 million less in revenue this year than they promised to state regulators when they won their bids to build the casinos three years ago.

Del Lago has generated $113 million in gambling revenue in its first nine months, far short of its $263 million projection.

State officials and casino owners argue that any new revenue from these casinos is good for the communities they’re in.

The three new casinos’ slots and table games have raised more than $88 million, 80 percent of which goes to public schools across New York. The amount those schools get is not affected by casino revenue fluctuations because of set rates.

The rest of that revenue goes to county and municipal governments.

The establishments have also provided jobs and boosted local economic activity.

New York State Thruway Authority data shows that traffic at Exit 41, where del Lago is located, has increased nearly 50 percent since the casino opened. As a result, the Magee Diner, just a stone’s throw from the casino, is in the process of expanding its restaurant and obtaining its liquor license.

The New York State Gaming Commission is quick to quell any concerns over revenue shortages, saying it’s too early to draw any conclusions about future earnings. The addition of hotels to the casinos is expected to help bring in more money. Del Lago premiered in February but its hotel didn’t open until the summer.

And Tioga Downs just opened its hotel on Dec. 1.

But there are more casinos on the horizon. The $1.2 billion Resort World Catskills in Sullivan County, the last of the four commercial casinos approved by the state in 2014, is scheduled to open in March. Within seven years, the state will approve three more casinos, initially all planned for the New York City area. But the regional Indian tribes will have several new casinos built long before then.

The Oneida Indian Nation, which operates the popular Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, opened the Yellow Brick Road Casino in Madison County in 2015. It is now constructing the $50 million Point Place Casino in Bridgeport, 10 miles from North Syracuse. That location is set to open in spring 2018. The Nation and Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. are also in the early stages of planning a new casino in downtown Utica. A marketing study is due to be released sometime next year.

Yes, these new facilities can do good things, but oversaturating New York with casinos and casino-like facilities is what many analysts blame for the shortcomings of del Lago, Rivers and Tioga Downs.

When Turning Stone opened 24 years ago, it was the only land-based casino in the entire state. Now there are nine just between Batavia and Albany, with more on the way.

A 2014 article in The New Yorker chronicled what it called “a nationwide casino arms race.” It noted that in 1978, Atlantic City, N.J., got its first commercial casino as a way to create jobs and improve economic stagnation. Sound familiar?

The casinos in Atlantic City poured in revenue from its own citizens, as well as visitors from neighboring states. Frustrated that their residents were driving across state lines to contribute millions in tax dollars to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut began building their own casinos. Then the neighboring states of those states saw the same problem and built their own casinos.

As commercial gambling has expanded

across the country, particularly in the densely populated Northeast, Atlantic City has been trying just to keep above water. Several of its casinos have closed or filed for bankruptcy, some of which have since been sold for way less than what it cost to build them.

The consequence of risk in business, perhaps, but casinos aren’t just any other business. They have a strong partnership with the state, which collects tens of millions of dollars in casino license fees, and then hundreds of millions more in tax revenues. Add in that they also employ hundreds of people, and you’ll find that state governments aren’t too willing to let casinos just fail when they face financial hardship.

So what’s the alternative? The state bails them out.

In 2014, three facilities in Delaware demanded financial concessions from the state in order to stay open and preserve jobs. They got it. Then in 2015, they came back asking for more.

After a casino in Rhode Island filed for bankruptcy in 2009, the state considered buying it outright. Even when an investment group purchased it, the state gave it $3.7 million in annual subsidies.

With casinos multiplying in New York, could that happen here? Actually, it already has.

Jeff Gural is chair of American Racing and Entertainment, the owner of Vernon Downs, a harness track and racino with video lottery terminals in Oneida County.

Gural said last spring he would have to shut down his entire operation and lay off

300 people by year’s end if he didn’t get a big tax break from the state. The state Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo agreed to cut the fees the racino pays on its slot machine revenues.

Problem solved, right? Well, now that the state helped him “break even or maybe even make a few bucks” in 2017, the owner said in November he plans to cut the number of slot machines in 2018, a necessary move as he faces possibly more competition in the already casino-saturated Mohawk Valley.

Facing competition from Rivers in Schenectady, Saratoga Casino Hotel also cried for help. The state answered by amending tax law to allow the racino to use 4 percent of its net winnings to make capital improvements. It’s a temporary relief deal, but Rivers still sits just 30 miles to the south. And Massachusetts, which approved its own commercial casino initiative in 2011, is constructing a new casino in Springfield, just 125 miles from Schenectady.

New York is already doing what casino proponents promised they wouldn’t do: use taxpayer money to subsidize gaming facilities that were supposed to revive economically stressed upstate regions.

Are Vernon Downs and Saratoga just the beginning? We can’t say for certain now, but as casinos continue to pop up, we should remember the rules of blackjack and the history of casino expansion: The more you keep hitting, the better the odds of busting. SNT

THE STOOP RETURNS, WHILE CHITTENANGO GETS SPIRITED “Come hang out” was the mantra for The Stoop when it originally opened in Armory Square back in 1994. The bar, located 24 steps above Trio Italian restaurant and Slices Pizza at 311 W. Fayette St., had a cult following because of its laid-back atmosphere and speakeasy feel, according to owner Eric Alderman.

After more than a decade of business, Alderman shuttered all his Fayette Street businesses, when he couldn’t devote enough time to them while juggling his full-time job as a lawyer. The Stoop would remain closed as Alderman pondered its future.

“What I really wanted to do was a place where the bar and the restaurant were equal,” he said.

The Stoop reopened Oct. 5 as the two-floor Stoop Kitchen, in the same space it once inhabited. The nostalgic tequila bar remains upstairs with the same brickwork, the same bathroom art, and the same bar with old newspaper and magazine clippings under glass, while the first floor is a high-dining, locally sourced eatery and bakery.

Alderman, who designed the space himself, said he wanted to keep the same “hangout” feel of the original Stoop.

Outlets and USB ports were strategically placed within reach of the tables downstairs, and the dining space has five different seating arrangements to cater to different needs. Clam-shaped goldenrod booths are good for indulging in intimate conversation, while longer tables in the back accommodate larger parties, or customers looking to engage with their neighbors.

The bathrooms are intentionally gender neutral. The accessories, handpicked

by Alderman, include a trio of antique theater chandeliers with wrought-iron accents, a community table with seats from a Vermont craftsman, a framed mirror more than four feet wide, and a tiny pigeon statue (a nod to the Stoop Kitchen’s logo) inconspicuously resting in a corner near the booth seating.

The upstairs bar now has about 168 types of tequila; Alderman said they hope to start live music, like in the old days, on New Year’s Eve. The kitchen space downstairs has a six-week cycling menu based on what farmers have available — it’s currently serving rabbit tacos, pork chops, and hot and sour eggplant — as well as its own wealth of liquors that help create six seasonal cocktail specials.

Alderman allows nonprofits and other groups to use the space free of charge on Mondays and Tuesdays. He said he would like to start hosting Coffee with a Cop, an existing initiative by the Syracuse Police Department to engage with the community in a relaxed setting. A corner in the front acts as a mini-marketplace for local products like olive oils and coffee.

Alderman said he wants the Stoop Kitchen to be a place that does “things for, not just in, the community,” and invited community members to make memories in the reinvigorated space.

Hours for the Bakery Café are Wednesdays through Fridays, 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dinners are served Wednesdays through Saturdays, 6 to 10 p.m.; Sundays, 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday brunches take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bars at both Stoop venues begin service on Wednesdays to Saturdays at 4p.m., Sundays at 10 a.m.

THE TIN WOODMAN’S FLASK

Oneida Nation Enterprises has expanded its business reach in Central New York with the debut of a wine and liquor store in Chittenango.

The Tin Woodman’s Flask sits at 710 W. Genesee St. in the Emerald City Plaza, between the Tops supermarket and the nation’s Yellow Brick Road Casino.

The Oneida Nation is investing in the Chittenango community because of its tourism value, said public relations manager Kelly Abdo. The town’s claim to fame is as the birthplace of L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It hosts the annual celebration Oz-Stravaganza, with the nation as a regular sponsor.

The nation broke ground on the construction project last July, she said. They went with an alcohol store because it was an amenity the company deemed was lacking in the area.

Rows of glass bottles are set up in the industrial-designed space. The flooring is a knotty hardwood, and the ceiling features black painted exposed ductwork.

A large section of one wall is accented with wood paneling, acting as a backdrop to the space’s tasting station.

Nation officials described Tin Woodman’s Flask as an alcohol “superstore.”

With 17,000 square feet with more than 100,000 bottles of wine and spirits, it’s one of the largest liquor stores in upstate New York, Abdo said.

And whatever can’t be found on the shelves can be special ordered, with a complementary 5 percent discount, she said.

“We don’t want them to say, ‘Oh, Tin Woodman doesn’t carry my favorite brand, guess I’ll have to keep going to the other place,’” Abdo said.

The store hosts weekend tasting events, where customers can taste different beverages and ask about their history, the brand and other questions. A schedule can be found at tinwoodmansflask.com/ tasting-events.

First, Navales clearly is comfortable with operating on the move. She shifts from a long quilt using actual leaves to “#16 Tree,” a piece made with fiber paste, silk, acrylic and other elements. A third work, “#20 Ginko,” was made from batik and cotton, while “#10 Bumble Bee” combines text, orange color, and the outline of a honeycomb.

In addition, straight-up figuration isn’t a constant in Navales’ work. Certainly, one piece portrays a crow, but others faintly depict trees or have no figuration at all.

And the large number of works on display at Edgewood makes it clear that the artist is comfortable with multiple approaches. Her digital prints reflect an arts-and-crafts sensibility. Yet she also created an artwork merging linen, fiber paste, acrylic and a small metal object, with the metal playing a key role. Elsewhere, “#29 Art Quilt” emphasizes a green mass flanked by abstract patterns.

The exhibition also presents other types of work by Navales: jewelry, tote bags and purses. They further document the artist’s versatility, and her interest in various media.

Askey-Cole, meanwhile, has a variety of work in the show. Her lattice sculptures, as the name implies, use an open framework, with space between stripes of clay. Her mosaics work off of disparate elements. “Sailing,” for example, encompasses a small sail shape that helps define the piece. A second mosaic features traditional patterns and a bird on a limb.

Beyond that, there’s a selection of the artist’s “torn” vases on display. These pieces aren’t broken or chipped. They are made with a ceramic technique enabling an artist to create a work with a jagged edge, a tiny or large opening, or an area of surface with a chunk missing. Askey-Cole’s pieces fit into the third category. This doesn’t merely provide a different look; it also allows the artist to challenge viewers’ perspective of ceramics.

She steps up her game by skillfully employing color in many of her works. In “Blue Stripe,” the stripe contrasts with earth colors. In another sculpture, green and gold interact, producing a striking effect. And in a tall vase, a green segment brings the work to another level; it’s a very pretty piece.

The holiday show and sale works nicely by providing ample room for displaying the two artists’ works. It’s easy for viewers to get a sense of Navales’ grasp of materials such as silk, leather and fiber paste and Askey-Cole’s expertise in working with various ceramic forms.

In addition to the main exhibit, Edgewood is also displaying a few of David McDonald’s ceramic works and Sherry Gordon’s hats and scarves.

METS MANIA BEGINS DURING CHIEFS HOT STOVE On a scale of 1 to 10, what does it mean to Dee Perkins to have the New York Mets as the Syracuse Chiefs’ major-league affiliate?

“A 15,” cracked Perkins’ husband, Mark.

Dee Perkins, of Liverpool, grew up in Queens, the home of the Mets, and she’s a lifetime fan of the team. She’s also a deputy program director for Syracuse Challenger Baseball, a league for children and adults with disabilities that has a close relationship with the Chiefs. And in recent years, Perkins and Chiefs general manager Jason Smorol often joked about the Mets coming to Syracuse.

“The last time we talked about it, Jason said I might have something for you,” Perkins said. “I thought Daniel Murphy was coming to town. The biggest dream I allowed myself to dream was Daniel Murphy.”

Murphy, one of the heroes of the Mets’ 2015 National League championship team, is now with the Chiefs’ current major-league affiliate, the Washington Nationals.

“And then, it was the Mets buying the Chiefs and I lost my mind,” Perkins said. “This has been years in the making that him and I have been going back and forth teasing each other about the Mets and then for it to actually happen, it was literally a dream come true for me.”

Wearing her Mets jersey, Perkins was one of about 700 fans who attended the Chiefs’ 58th Hot Stove Dinner Dec. 8 at the Pirro Convention Center in downtown Syracuse. Although the Chiefs have

one more season with the Nationals before the Mets come in, the Hot Stove was all about the Mets as Smorol, Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney and others welcomed the Mets to Syracuse, and former Mets Ron Darling, Tim Teufel and Edgardo Alfonzo were the special guests.

Smorol said the turnout was the second-best in Hot Stove history next to the 900 or so who attended the January 2016 event featuring Pete Rose. So clearly, even before the sale of the Chiefs to the Mets was finalized (that’s supposed to take place this week), the relationship is off to a fast start.

The money question, though, is how it will finish. The Chiefs’ management and board recommended the sale — and the team’s shareholders approved it — because the Chiefs have struggled to turn a profit and owe $1 million to cover two loans.

The affiliation between the Mets and Chiefs starts in 2019 after one more year with the Nationals. The lease between the Mets and Onondaga County for the use of NBT Bank Stadium runs through 2025. Can this partnership resuscitate the fan base to the point where the team is making enough money that the Mets aren’t tempted to move the team to another location?

Marty Nave, a lifelong Chiefs fan from Syracuse, said the fans and this community need to embrace the team whether it’s winning or losing — and for most of the last 40 years, it has been losing. Nave said fans should appreciate the level of

baseball that is being played — Triple-A is just one level below the majors — and understand that if Triple-A baseball does leave, Syracuse isn’t going to get it back.

“You’ve got take the money out and support the team. The future of baseball in Syracuse is in the hands of the baseball fans,” Nave said. “You can’t say I’m going to the game expecting they’ll have a great winning season but to support baseball and support these players.”

Longtime Chiefs season-ticket holder Dave Smolnycki, of Camillus, agreed that it’s “put up or shut up” time for Central New York baseball fans. Smolnycki praised the work that Smorol and his staff have done to secure corporate sponsorships and fill the advertising space at the stadium but said that obviously hasn’t been enough to keep the team in the black.

“If you love baseball, you better start coming out now and in the next eight years,” Smolnycki said. “Because if you don’t, it may not be here any longer,” Smolnycki believes the Mets’ affiliation will help the Chiefs’ traditionally poor attendance because it’ll be easier for fans here to follow former Chiefs since the Mets are on the radio and television every night in this market. And while this remains a New York Yankees town, the Mets are a close second and starting in 2019 Mets fans from Syracuse can watch the team’s top prospects before they reach New York City.

Eric Gallanty, the Chiefs’ director of broadcasting and media relations, has traveled with the team throughout the International League and said there’s not always a correlation between attendance and a Triple-A team’s proximity to its major-league affiliate. For every Lehigh Valley that flourishes with the Philadelphia Phillies only an hour away, Gallanty said, there’s a Gwinnett that finishes last in attendance even though it’s close to the parent Atlanta Braves.

“But I know this: We get more fans when the Yankees are here (in Syracuse) than on a normal Tuesday,” Gallanty said.

“That’s absolutely true and should be the case with the Mets.”

Smorol said the Chiefs will receive full support from the Mets, who are thrilled to be moving their Triple-A team from Las Vegas to Syracuse. Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, the son of principal owner Fred Wilpon, visited Syracuse Dec. 7 with some of the Mets’ front office staff to meet the Chiefs’ staff, answer questions and “welcome everybody to the Mets’ organization,” Smorol said.

“They obviously know our (financial) numbers, they know what we’ve done, they’ve talked to us, and they’re going to let us go,” Smorol said. “And then they’re going to take a look and see where they can make improvements, or where they can lend a hand and their expertise.”

For Dee Perkins, who celebrated her

birthday at the Hot Stove by getting autographs from Darling, Teufel and Alfonso, the Mets can’t get here fast enough. And she said fellow Mets fans feel the same way. She’s a member of a Facebook group called “Delusional Mets Fans” who live around the state and many are planning on making trips to Syracuse starting in 2019.

“So I think it’s a huge win for Syracuse, and I think it’s a huge win for Jason Smorol,” Perkins said. “The excitement we have now when we go to games is just off-the-charts fantastic. So now the combination of a team that’s in New York state and what Jason brings to the table in terms of running the team, I think it’s great news for Syracuse.”

Meet the Mets, Greet the Mets

Former Mets players Ron Darling, Tim Teufel and Edgardo Alfonzo were the special guests at the Dec. 8 Hot Stove Dinner. (Another former Met, Mookie Wilson, couldn’t make it because of a delayed flight.) Here’s what Darling, a color commentator for the Mets and TBS, and Teufel, the Mets’ roving infield instructor and a former minor-league manager in their system, had to say about Syracuse and why the Mets are thrilled to be coming here: Darling on Syracuse: “You always judge towns if you’re a Triple-A player by what do they have to offer as far as where to eat, where to hang out, where to do stuff and Syracuse was always at the top of that list. So in that respect, I’m really happy that the Mets have made a financial commitment to Syracuse and its baseball team.”

Teufel on the difference between Syracuse and Las Vegas, the Mets’ current Triple-A city: “Currently we’re in Las Vegas and it’s 116 degrees out there in the summer and the ball flies and it’s hard to grade out our players evenly with the teams in the International League in this type of climate. So I think it gives us a better chance to evaluate our talent better when we’re in that same kind of location, same kind of temperature, same kind of environment.”

Darling on the proximity between Syracuse and New York City: “The proximity, of course, is a game-changer for the Mets.

The ability to, after a ballgame, have an injury to a player and be able to throw him in a car here in Syracuse and have him there for the next day, it’s just going to be a chance for a great partnership.”

Teufel on having the Mets’ Triple-A team in the International League: “As far as our organization is concerned, we have some talented young guys who are going to come up through here. What we’d like to see is them get ready for the big leagues. And this is a great city, a great spot for us for a couple of reasons: It’s the same climate that they’ll play down

in Citi Field when they get up there; and second, when they come here, they’re going to be in a position where they’re going to be playing top-notch players in the International League getting them ready for the big leagues. It’s a perfect stop for them.”

Darling on the fit between Syracuse and the Mets: “I think I know my history here in Syracuse. The Yankees had an amazing run, you know, (Ron) Guidry played here and Thurman (Munson) and others. Toronto had a great run and now I think it’s the Mets’ turn. I have a lot of friends here in Syracuse that I went to college with, and they seem evenly split from Yankees fans and Mets fans and it seems natural that a New York team would be here.”

Orange Slices

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team improved to 8-1 Dec. 9 with a harder-than-it-sounds 72-58 win over the Colgate Raiders at the Carrier Dome. The Orange overcame a sputtering offense and a barrage of 3-pointers by the Raiders to tie the all-time Division I record for most consecutive wins against one opponent.

The Orange against Colgate (19632017) and UCLA against California (1961-1985) hold the record with 52 consecutive wins. Syracuse also owns the two longest active streaks in the country against Colgate and Cornell (38 in a row).

Syracuse has this week off before traveling to face former Big East Conference rival Georgetown at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, and Coach Jim Boeheim said the youthful Orange is using this week to clean up issues on both ends of the floor.

“We’re still trying to get together offensively as to what we can do, and we got a lot of work to do to get better,” Boeheim said. “We played a lot of games, relatively, in the first part here, so it’s good to

have a week to try to get a little bit better at some things.” . . . Syracuse recently announced that it’s going to retire the jerseys for former basketball standouts Lawrence Moten and Dennis DuVal later this season. Moten’s No. 21 jersey will be retired during the March 3 game against Clemson at the Carrier Dome, while DuVal’s No. 22 jersey will be retired during the Jan. 6 game against Notre Dame.

They will join a group of 10 other Orange players who have had their numbers retired: Carmelo Anthony (15), Dave Bing (22), Derrick Coleman (44), Sherman Douglas (20), Billy Gabor (17), Vic Hanson (8), Billy Owens (30), Rony Seikaly (4), Wilmeth Sidat-Singh (19) and Dwayne “Pearl” Washington (31). . . . The postseason honors continue to roll in for Syracuse senior wide receiver Steve Ishmael, who was recently named to the Walter Camp All-America Second Team. Ishmael, the first SU player to earn Walter Camp All-America honors since Dwight Freeney in 2001 and the 16th overall, was also named to the All-ACC First Team, SB Nation’s All-America First Team, and the All-ECAC First Team. . . . Syracuse’s non-conference football game against Notre Dame on Nov. 17, 2018, was moved from Notre Dame to Yankee Stadium as part of the Irish’s Shamrock Series. The Orange is 7-1 overall at Yankee Stadium with two recent wins in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl against Kansas State in 2010 and West Virginia in 2012. . . . nice sunny day.” The next day, I thought, “What a nice sunny day.” The next day, I thought, “Oh my God, I never realized how much I appreciated the sun!” I’m a Syracusan at heart and still have a deep appreciation for the sun.

How did growing up in Syracuse influence you as a person and musician?

It’s kind of who I am. Salt potatoes and Hofmanns (hot dogs) are in my blood. I think coming from that area and listening to WAER-FM 88.3 as a kid, there was a big jazz influence. When I was growing up, there was meat-and-potatoes rock’n’roll and jazz. There weren’t folk or roots outlets that I was aware of, so classic rock mixed with great jazz singers became the roux of my sauce.

What music moved you most as a kid?

I remember finding an old copy of Abbey Road in my basement. I wasn’t familiar with The Beatles until I found that vinyl with the Apple (logo) on it. I put it on the turntable in the attic. It was unbearably scratched, but that amazing, beautiful rock’n’roll shined through. I fell in love with The Beatles in the late 1970s when I was in sixth grade. I started getting guitar lessons and learning tunes off of Led Zeppelin records, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. The rest is history.

You’re bringing the Martin Sexton Trio this time. Tell me about it.

This is more bluegrass and country-folk music. There are more three-part harmonies. It’s fun. Chris (Anderson) is a great bass player out of New York, more on the pop side. Boo (Reiners) is a multi-guy.

He’s been working a lot with Dispatch.

He’s got a real deep wealth of knowledge with American roots music and brings a twang to the sound. But we still maintain the spontaneity of the solo show.

What was it like getting the show together?

We started rehearsals up at my camp in the Adirondacks last summer. We’d be on

the screened porch working out musical arrangements, get burnt on that and hop in the boat. We’d go on the lake, work on harmonies, get burnt on that and jump in the lake. It was a neat place to work.

Boats would pull up to listen to us: a free show in the middle of the lake! Our first show was around Labor Day. Now we’ve gotten to that nice point, real comfortable.

We know what each other will do.

You’ve been at this for a long time.

What continues to inspire you?

It’s still a lot of the same stuff, everything and anything. People I meet on the road, things I see on TV, but most recently, it’s been my family, family events, family members. On the Mixtape of the Open Road record I’ve got a song for my mom called “Virginia.” I’ve got a song about my son (Shane) called “Set in Stone.” It’s about how everything changes in the world — people’s views, the weather — but one thing that doesn’t change is the love for family. That’s set in stone and it’s not going anywhere.

Is your son into music?

He sings in the chorus at school, but it’s hard to get him up on stage. I don’t force it. I know he’s got the musical inclination gene that my grandfather had, my father had and I have. I try to entice him rather than force. Maybe in a couple years I’ll step on the gas a little more. My mom didn’t force me, but she did enforce practicing. I took guitar lessons she paid for, so she made sure I practiced that guitar.

To this day, I thank her for that guidance.

When did you know music was it for you?

Once you learn three chords, you can play half the songs ever written. I’d play a record and think, “I can do that.” I got my book of chords and started making up my own stuff. I even started trying to write my own songs at an early age, 13 or 14.

With very little success, I might add.

Do you remember any of those songs?

I still play one or two songs I wrote as a teenager. One song, called “13 Step Boogie,” is kind of a lot of inside jokes.

I’ve had many experiences with 12-step programs. It’s a little jazz tune, fun to sing, nice beat and melody, cheeky lyrics.

I often say when I introduce it that I wrote it when I was 19 because there are lines about trying to pick up a teenage girl. It helps people to know that I was myself a teenager!

What’s next for you?

I think my next project will be some kind of cover project: classic country. It’s what I’ve been dreaming on. I’ll record some George Jones, Merle (Haggard), Willie (Nelson), some real classic country songs sung in the way I sing them. I’ll go to Nashville, hook up with some cool dude and go old school: vintage instruments and amps, right to tape, recorded live, fuzzy sounding.

How does it feel to come home?

When I moved out, there was no fertile field of rootsy, lesser-known music.

Everything (touring artists) was household names at the Carrier Dome or the Landmark Theatre. I’m happy to hear there’s a groundswell (of local music) going on now.

What advice do you have for people who want to do what you do?

Be true to your heart. Don’t listen to people who say you can’t do it. If you really feel a commitment, then do it. I’ve seen a lot of artists or bands do it half measure. They really have something, but they have kids or day jobs. They can’t commit.

You need to tour your ass off. Get a publicist. Try to get a label, get management, something to help this catch fire.

It takes risk and courage. You could fall flat on your ass and probably will in this business.

My hat is off to anyone who’s just starting out. Step on the gas. Make use of all the wonderful avenues you have now that I didn’t.

How did you “step on the gas”?

My career was a million baby steps, not one big break. For me, it’s really grassroots and it’s remained that way ever since I started. The fans are galvanized. It’s like they’re related to me.

They keep coming back. It’s not fleeting, like something I just heard on YouTube.

People have a life experience attached to the songs and stay interested and engaged.

JFK: THE UNSOLVED MYSTERY

Assassination researchers continue to connect the dots from previously declassified files

By Russ Tarby Thousands of previously classified documents have been released this year, but no new suspects have surfaced in America’s most famous cold case: the Nov. 22, 1963, murder of President John F. Kennedy.

While it’s too early to fully assess information from the long-awaited document dump mandated by the JFK Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, analysis of previously released files and testimonies points to a handful of suspects. Several names repeatedly crop up as likely participants in planning and carrying out the assassination and, even more strongly, in its cover-up.

Conspirators believed to have orchestrated the shooting in Dallas include CIA Operation Mongoose honcho William King Harvey; his buddy, mafioso Johnny Roselli; CIA black ops contractor David Sánchez Morales; and CIA psychological warrior David Atlee Phillips, a Latin American specialist who apparently acted as Lee Harvey Oswald’s case officer in 1963.

Before he died in 2007, Watergate mastermind E. Howard Hunt, a former CIA agent, identified Harvey, Morales, Phillips, Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis and an unidentified French sharpshooter as the brains and brawn behind the president’s killing.

A prime mover in the cover-up was Jack Ruby, the nightclub operator who shot Oswald in the Dallas Municipal Building basement two days after the president’s murder. As Ruby pumped a .38 slug into Oswald’s abdomen while he was handcuffed to a Dallas policeman, the shooting was broadcast live by NBC-TV. A native of Chicago, Ruby functioned

as an informant for both the FBI and the Dallas Police Department, and he associated with gamblers, pornographers, dope dealers and gunrunners from Las Vegas to New Orleans to Havana. Although researchers believe that his police contacts helped him pull off his very public murder of Oswald, it would be a great surprise if any of the new documents proved once and for all who or what motivated Ruby to sacrifice his own freedom by eliminating Oswald.

Cover-Up Conundrums

Such revelations are highly unlikely according to John Newman, author of the groundbreaking 1995 study of the accused assassin’s intelligence files, Oswald and the CIA. Scores of documents “were shredded exactly before the House Select Committee on Assassinations investigators started asking for them” in 1976.

“There’s no control of some things,” Newman said at JFK Lancer’s annual November in Dallas conference on Nov. 19, at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. “We have no idea, for instance, how many soft files (non-record working papers) were tucked away in desk drawers.”

But we know beyond a doubt that a handful of powerful men in Washington coordinated the cover-up, including former CIA director and Warren Commission member Allen Dulles; FBI director J. Edgar Hoover; and CIA counterintelligence chief James Angleton, who served as the agency’s liaison with the FBI as it investigated the Kennedy killing for the commission.

A less well-known CIA officer, George Joannides, continued to misdirect investigators during the late 1970s when he

was called out of retirement to become the agency’s liaison to the House Select Committee on Assassinations.

Joannides was a curious choice for that task. Years later, declassified documents showed that in 1963 Joannides oversaw the anti-Castro Student Revolutionary Directorate in New Orleans. Accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald had publicly clashed with the anti-Castro group that summer while he ostensibly represented the pro-Castro Fair Play for Cuba committee.

Just as Dulles and Angleton had the agency’s back during the Warren Commission investigation, Joannides stonewalled the HSCA. The foxes were guarding the henhouse.

Information on Joannides remains under lock and key.

Former Washington Post investigative reporter Jeff Morley painstakingly documents Joannides’ undercover work in New Orleans, as well as his assignment to undermine the work of the HSCA, in his 2016 eBook, CIA & JFK: The Assassination Files.

Meanwhile, Morley has sued the CIA for its Joannides records. “In the course of that litigation, the CIA acknowledged holding 295 documents about Joannides’ career that they say cannot be released in any form,” Morley said.

Trump and the Document Dump

This year’s JFK document dump is a mountain of molehills: thousands upon thousands of previously classified documents from the FBI, the NSA, congressional committees and, of course, the CIA.

In fact, three-fourths of the documents originated with the agency.

“It’s all mixed together, and you can’t tell what’s what,” said Russ Baker, author of Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America’s Invisible Government, and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years.

Baker runs the website whowhatwhy. org, and his staff plans to examine each and every newly released file. “It’s a huge job,” Baker said. “And no other news organization in the world is looking into all of the documents as we are doing.”

The declassification of the files was mandated by a 1992 law which set Oct. 26, 2017, as the deadline for the National Archives and Records Administration to release records that had been redacted to protect methods and sources.

But Rex Bradford — who manages maryferrell.org, likely the largest single private repository of assassination information — characterized the 2017 process as “chaotic,” and said massive redactions remain. “The impression that only agent and informant names and the like are being withheld is mistaken,” he said.

“Entire pages in some documents remain redacted.”

Thousands of documents remained classified or redacted when the JFK Assassination Records Collection Act was passed following the release of director Oliver Stone’s flamboyant assassination film, JFK (1992), A quarter-century later, as the release deadline approached this year, 441 files were released early, in July.

Another 626 files came to light in October and November, and some 30,000 other documents that had been partially opened over the years were set to be released in full.

But on Oct. 26, President Donald Trump decided to hold back some documents for six months while the CIA and FBI pleaded with him to keep them secret, citing “national security, law enforcement, and foreign affairs concerns.”

Or because they could blow the covers of longtime spooks.

After 54 years, most people involved in the JFK investigation have retired and died. But San Francisco civil rights attorney Bill Simpich thinks he knows why Trump caved in.

“The wiretap operators in Mexico City, it’s quite possible that some of those people are still alive,” Simpich said at this year’s JFK Lancer conference. Alleged assassin Oswald reportedly visited the Cuban Consulate in Mexico City some seven weeks before the president’s shooting, and CIA operatives are believed to have tape recorded his telephone calls there.

Simpich authored the book State Secret: Wiretapping in Mexico City, Double Agents, and the Framing of Lee Oswald, which is available for free at maryferrell. org.

Regardless of why Trump decided to hold back documents, researchers remain frustrated. Dan Hardway, a former investigator for HSCA, is one of them.

“There has been no explanation of why the intelligence community has requested this delay,” he wrote in a Nov. 3 letter to a U.S. senator. “It was made in secret.

What kind of pressure have they brought to bear? How can they force a president to so blatantly disregard the law?”

Larry Hancock, a longtime Cold War historian from Oklahoma and author of the JFK tell-all, Someone Would Have Talked, agrees that Trump is catering to the intelligence community. “The quantity of redaction is clearly not what Congress intended or what the president promised, so at this point the release does not appear to be in compliance with congressional

intent regardless of how you spin it,” he said. “And as far as NARA is concerned, these redactions are the president’s prerogative.

More Questions Than Answers

The newly available documents are a mishmash. Hundreds of the freshly opened files involve post-assassination Soviet defector Yuri Nosenko, including audiotapes and transcripts, many in Russian. Such material illustrates the famous paranoia of James Jesus Angleton, the CIA counterintelligence chief from 1954 to 1975, who obsessively feared Soviet infiltration.

Angleton’s Special Investigations Group office had maintained Oswald’s “201 personality file” since 1960. At the Lancer conference, Newman cited evidence of agency interest in Oswald even before the ex-Marine’s dubious defection to Russia in 1959, suggesting that Angleton knew things about Oswald that were not even shared with the CIA’s own Soviet Division. In any case, Angleton’s counterintelligence people tracked Oswald closely up until the weeks prior to Kennedy’s murder in Dallas.

Fortunately, we have a new biography of the mercurial Angleton: The Ghost: The Secret Life of CIA Spymaster James Jesus Angleton by former Washington Post investigative reporter Jeff Morley.

The son of an Office of Strategic Services officer and a Mexican mother, Angleton is depicted as a man haunted by the threat of KGB infiltration of U.S. intelligence operations, a man who remained loyal to former CIA director Allen Dulles, a man who went to great lengths to keep secret the CIA’s pre-assassination knowledge of the accused assassin. During his early years with the agency, Angleton earned Dulles’ undying trust by conducting sensitive operations in Eastern Europe and Israel.

A 2015 book by San Francisco investigative journalist David Talbot, The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America’s Secret Government, indicts Dulles for orchestrating the Kennedy assassination at the behest of corporate leaders such as David Rockefeller, who perceived the president as a threat to Third World corporate expansionism, specifically into Latin America. After the assassination, Dulles lobbied Lyndon Johnson to be appointed to the Warren Commission, which he dominated.

Angleton biographer Jeff Morley spoke at the November in Dallas conference, as did Baker, Simpich, Hancock and others. “Angleton was an ally of Bill Harvey,” Simpich said. The pistol-packing, hard-drinking Harvey partnered with special ops Col. Ed Lansdale to lead Operation Mongoose, a covert operation against the Castro government. “And Angleton was an opponent of the Kennedy brothers.”

Harvey shared that animosity. His widow, C.J. Harvey, called JFK and his family “scum.” Angleton and Harvey had both been involved in assassination plots against Castro.

In the fall of 1962, Hancock asserted at the conference, CIA deputy director of plans Richard Helms directed Harvey to activate a new executive action program, a death squad dubbed “the magic button.”

Hancock studied Harvey’s notes from those meetings, an eye-opening list of murder dos and don’ts, many utilized in the JFK matter, such as “blame the Soviets” and set up a patsy with “forged and backdated documents.”

Angleton was “deeply involved” with anti-Castro Cuban exiles, Hancock said, and had closely examined the state of Cuban intelligence agencies following the Bay of Pigs.

On May 23, 1963, six months before the bullets echoed over Elm Street, Angleton wrote a memo regarding Cuba and mentioned the ease with which an American citizen might secure a visa for travel to Havana at the Cuban Consulate in Mexico City. Oswald apparently enacted that exact scenario when he visited the Mexican capital some seven weeks before the assassination.

To summarize his view of Angleton’s culpability, Morley writes, “Dulles wanted to steer the (Warren) commission’s investigation away from the CIA, and Angleton was obliging. A conspiracy theorist would say Angleton masterminded the JFK cover-up. A prosecutor would say he obstructed justice. A bureaucrat would say he covered his ass. In every practical sense, his actions were invisible.

In the tragedy of Dallas, Angleton played a ghost.”

So, researchers have their eyes peeled for more on Angleton and his officers in the new releases, but have so far been stymied. “Information on Angleton’s

activities were dispersed throughout the agency,” said British researcher Malcolm Blunt. “There are no official Angleton files anywhere at the CIA.” None. And Angleton held a top-level post for 13 years!

New Leads To Pursue

A few intriguing tidbits have surfaced.

The mayor of Dallas in 1963, Earle Cabell, had been granted a CIA security check and clearance. His brother was Gen. Charles Cabell, the CIA’s second-in-command under Allen Dulles before Kennedy fired them after the Bay of Pigs. Earle Cabell had been in charge of JFK’s motorcade on Nov. 22, and it was his police department that failed to protect Oswald from Ruby. “So that does raise some questions,” noted Dick Russell, author of On the Trail of the JFK Assassins.

Another revelation sheds light on a violent anti-Castro group known as Alpha 66, a memo from Mongoose leader Lansdale ordering a hold on Alpha 66 and its sabotage of Cuban shipping. “So here we have a document suggesting that either Lansdale was totally clueless about Alpha 66 or that the CIA did have some sort of highly cutout operational control over them,” Hancock noted. “Which tells us nothing about the JFK assassination per se but might tell us something very new about what would have been a deeply buried CIA operation.”

And the new file names have identified the Dallas IRS informant – Robert Vanderslice – who officially reported that Ruby had advance knowledge that something would happen in the motorcade. In fact, on the morning of Nov. 22, 1963, Ruby invited Vanderslice to come down and “watch the fireworks,” as reported in Larry Hancock’s book, Someone Would Have Talked.

Alan Dale, an editor at the Assassination Archives and Research Center (aarclibrary.org), emceed this year’s Lancer conference. He views the document dump as proof that “there are a lot more cards in the deck than we realized. Now it’s up to serious, disciplined researchers to put together the pieces.”

Dale footnotes his optimism with a note of caution. “Documents don’t always mean what they say or say what they mean. What they purport to reveal is seldom complete and may not be accurate, perhaps even false, especially when they are issued by intelligence agencies whose tradecraft includes deception and maintenance of ‘plausible deniability.’”

This year’s document dump may be a mountain of molehills, but there just could be a rat lurking in one of them — if only we dig deeply enough. SNT

REDHOUSE CURTAIN CALLS BEFORE ITS MOVE TO SALINA STREET The Redhouse Arts Center has sat on the edge of downtown Syracuse for more than a decade, along South West Street between bustling Armory Square and the West Side.

The venue opened in 2004, debuting with David Auburn’s drama Proof, performed in a theater with fewer than 90 seats.

The Redhouse will close its doors following its performances of the musical I Do! I Do! this weekend. The theater is getting a new, larger home on South Salina Street, with a March 8 opening slated for On Golden Pond.

“We need to grow because we need a larger house to bring in higher ticket revenue,” said Laura Austin, a founding artistic director at the Redhouse. “Our programming has not changed, but the demand for it has grown, and we need more seats so that more people can see the shows.”

The three-story brick building, which dates to the days of the Erie Canal, was once a dilapidated boarding house. Where others saw decay, a group of local artists saw promise. In 2001 they decided to turn the building into an arts center, with Redhouse opening three years later.

The renovations alone cost around $1.5 million, raised predominantly through fundraising. The building was to be a multipurpose arts facility and year-round venue for live theater, music, film and gallery shows.

“We quickly learned that we were trying to do too many things,” Austin reflected.

“We had to tighten our vision and specialize in what we do now, which is professional theater production and arts-based education.”

At its inception, the small space was alluring to the founders. The old-style urban setting was reminiscent of California backroom show spaces and avant-garde New York City show halls, members of the group told the Syracuse New Times during the Redhouse’s premiere.

But the demand for seating has outweighed the aesthetic ideals, according to Austin. In 2004 the founders bought a conjoining alley to expand the space, but the theater still only has fewer than

90 seats. Redhouse would regularly host sold-out productions and it became unrealistic for the number of people who wanted to attend the shows each year.

Behind the scenes, staff members are beginning to get cramped with shared office spaces, executive director Samara Hannah said. While Redhouse may have been roomy when there were only three full-time employees, the increase to nearly 50 full-time and about 100 part-time employees has strained the administrative facilities.

Conversations about moving to a different location have been on the table for about five years, Austin said. In March, those conversations will become reality: The Redhouse will relocate to City Center, 400 S. Salina St., in the former

“We are excited to be working closely with other arts organizations,” Hannah said. “The location to South Salina Street puts us in proximity to the MOST (Museum of Science and Technology) and the Landmark Theatre, creating a critical mass of arts organizations in that part of downtown.”

The $10 million investment will allow the Redhouse to operate three theater halls: a large main stage with room for more than 300; a smaller stage that seats more than 100; and an intimate black box space for about 50 viewers, Austin said.

There will also be expanded office space, two larger rehearsal halls, classroom space, places for set and prop construction and storage, and more.

The group has raised about $8 million to fund the move through community donations, Hannah said. Construction is already under way at South Salina Street, and she’s confident the organization can raise the remaining funds to meet their goals.

The quirkiness of the South West Street building will not be easily forgotten, Austin said. Making the building work for the last 13 years has changed the way the Redhouse approaches theater, and she said they plan to take that outside-the-box thinking to City Center.

While the groundwork is being laid for the future, the Redhouse is holding its last production at its South West Street home.

The Tom Jones-Harvey Schmidt musical comedy I Do! I Do! was chosen specifically as the closing show because of its emotional parallels to the Redhouse’s history. I Do! follows two characters as they navigate married life over 50 years.

Austin said the emotional ups and downs, and the theme of survival, is relevant to the venue’s own history.

When Austin saw the Nov. 30 preview, as photos of previous plays flashed across the projector at the end, she teared up.

Going through the building’s basement and seeing old memorabilia has also been an emotional journey, much like I Do! I Do! “It really is the perfect piece to bid farewell to our space and this chapter of our life as what I fondly call ‘the little theater that could,’” Austin said.

I Do! I Do! wraps its run with performances on Wednesday, Dec. 13, and Thursday, Dec. 14, 7 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16, 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 17, 2 p.m. Tickets are $32 for adults, $27 for seniors and students.

He announces that he’s going to see action and that he’s leaving his horn behind.

Other directors have taken this as a cue to switch the mood to a Casablanca-like world weariness, yet director Catchouny emphasizes a more upbeat tone, as the cast climaxes with “I’ll Be Seeing You.” SNT

DIALING IN MUSICAL MEMORIES FOR RETRO RADIO SHOW It’s a snowy night in New York City, Dec. 21, 1942, as the live action of the Manhattan Mutual Variety Cavalcade goes on the air, broadcasting from the seedy studios of radio station WOV. It is the golden age of the American popular song, when Gershwin’s “Love is Here to Stay,” Harold Arlen’s “That Old Black Magic” or Rodgers and Hart’s “Blue Moon” are heard every day.

As reprised in Walton Jones’ The 1940s Radio Hour, running through Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Central New York Playhouse, everyone also knows the menace of World War II after a year of combat. And we know that the world of make-it-up-as-you-go artistry would soon be blown away.

Jones conceived Radio Hour in 1979, when post-modernism was invading popular culture. Action begins deceptively with a techie named Stanley (Dan Randall, actually the lighting director for this production) is checking lights, while the sleepy, gray-bearded watchman Pops (Phil Brady) is taking illegal bets on a pay phone. The players gradually arrive, dolled up in Barb Toman and Kate Kisselstein’s delicious period costumes.

There is no real plot, only the drive to get the broadcast on the air, then over and done. Neither is there a hero, anti-hero or protagonist. We see the characters without picking a favorite. Some are really talented, others are just boastful.

Soon we realize that the tallest member of the cast, Clifton Feddington (Matthew Green), is doing most of the heavy lifting.

He’s the general manager in a time-sensitive enterprise plagued with laggards, so he has to keep cracking the whip. This requires working closely with the self-important barking manager, Lou Cohn (Keith Arlington), who also controls the sound effects.

Clifton is also the custard-voiced on-air announcer, which makes everything he says, like giving the station’s name, sound like a smarmy commercial. The cast and company look too young to remember those voices, but older members in the audience know that Green hits the mark. He’s also the baritone lead singer in the rousing opening number, “Chattanooga Choo Choo.”

As the others flood into the studio, several singers are introduced as types, like young Connie Miller (Hali Greenhouse), a

teenager with Veronica Lake-styled long blond hair, or curlytopped soubrette Ginger Brooks (Jackie Bleich), who chews gum like a mixmaster. The roles get fleshed out with fuller characterizations during the second act under Patricia Catchouny’s direction.

We learn, for example, that the crooning Sinatra-wannabe, Johnny Cantone (Eric Feldstein), was a welterweight fighter and has a wife at home named Angel. Dressed in a tuxedo, Feldstein gives Johnny a distinctive style, and sets him apart from the pack. There has also been something between him and redhaired singer Ann Collier (Leila Dean), which must be on the wane as Johnny is making noises about breaking out to Hollywood.

This behind-the-microphone tension is what keeps The 1940s Radio Hour from being merely a nostalgia-filled jukebox musical. While many numbers are indeed broadcast-worthy, such as “I Got It Bad (and That Ain’t Good)” from Geneva (Martikah Williams), the only black singer in the cast, and Ann Collier’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” there are often two levels of interplay a few chairs back.

The broadcast players can also be rough practical jokers.

The onstage musicians, including pianist Abel Searor (also music director of The 1940s Radio Hour), gang up on bearded, pipe-smoking Neal (Christopher James) as he attempts to warble “Blue Moon,” finally depantsing him in mid-phrase. WOV listeners are never the wiser.

The horseplay punctuates compiler Jones’ anti-romantic deflation of radio’s golden era. Not only were very few people making very much money, but quite of bit of the job was degrading to someone aspiring to stardom, like doing commercials.

Some of these, such as the jingles for “Pepsi Cola” or “Chiquita Banana,” are just as familiar as numbers by Sammy Kaye or Burton Lane, if somewhat saccharine in comparison.

Worse, the radio players had to take speaking roles in commercial vignettes that turned on questions of personal hygiene, like body odor. Hard-luck player Neal supplies a convincing groan of constipation in a Sal Hepatica ad. Performers were muscled into being hucksters up until the early days of television.
