What’s Up, Docs?

Practicing physicians in Cairo, Egypt, opened a surgery-themed restaurant called D.Kebda in July, where they wear surgical scrubs and prepare their only offering: grilled beef-liver sandwiches, behind a glass partition. Kebda is a popular street food in Egypt, but it can cause food poisoning if not prepared carefully. “We tried to take our career values and apply them to this other field,” said Mostafa Basiouny, one of the owners. “There is no contradiction between them; we are still practicing doctors.”

Can’t Clutch This

Criminal justice student Jordan Dinsmore, 20, of Columbia, S.C., had her car’s manual transmission to thank for her safe escape on July 26. Three men approached her around 1 a.m. and pointed a gun at her. After robbing her of her phone and purse, the men forced her into her car, threatening to kidnap and rape her, but when they realized none of them knew how to drive her stick-shift car, one of the criminals ran away. The other two forced Dinsmore to drive to an ATM to withdraw cash. As she drove, Dinsmore removed her seatbelt, then put the car in neutral and jumped out, screaming, “Call

911! Call 911!” to passing motorists. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old in the kidnapping and robbery.

Least Competent Criminals

Surveillance video from a July 27 break-in at the home of John C. Burbage, 59, of Naples, Fla., showed a surprisingly familiar picture of the perpetrators: Harold Russell Lanham, 22, and his dad, James Edward Lanham, 41, both of whom Burbage employed and both of whom were wearing their work uniforms. The Lanham duo stole a safe containing more than $30,000 worth of cash and property from their boss’ home.

Here Comes The Judge

Jordan Wills, 22, of Dover, England, provoked the ire of Judge Simon James of the Canterbury Crown Court in Kent when he appeared before the court. Wills called the judge a prick, and when James asked him to refrain from using obscene language, Wills said, “Who are you to tell me what to do?” James replied. “Well, I am the judge . . . and I need to make it clear to you and others that such behavior is not going to be tolerated.” Wills was Jen Sorensen

found in contempt of court and sentenced to two weeks in jail.

Your Cold, Cold Heart

A police officer on maternity leave was ticketed and fined 110 pounds after she pulled her car into a bus stop in west London to help her newborn baby, who was choking in the back seat. Rebecca Moore, 31, of Aylesbury, said her son, Riley, was “going a deep shade of red in the face, his eyes were bulging and watering, and he was trying to cough but was struggling.” Moore appealed the fine, but the Harrow Council rejected her appeal, as did the London Tribunals. “The law about stopping in bus stops is exactly the same everywhere in London,” a council spokeswoman said. “You can’t do it.”

Just Say Neigh

One reveler at an Aug. 19 street festival in Worcester, Mass., caused a dust-up when he aggressively confronted a police horse. Donald Pagan, 59, was cutting through a column of mounted police when an officer asked him to stop. Instead, Pa-

gan raised his fist “in an attempt to punch the horse in the face,” a police statement said. The horse jumped backward, away from Pagan, which officers noted could have injured Pagan, the horse or the mounted officer. Pagan was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and interfering with a police horse.

Social Media to the Rescue!

Epping, N.H., resident Leslie Kahn, 61, found herself trapped in her swimming pool on Aug. 11 after the ladder broke.

She was not strong enough to pull herself out of the pool, so she used a pool pole to drag a nearby chair, with her iPad on it, closer. On a community Facebook page, Kahn posted her desperate situation under the heading “911,” and soon police and neighbors showed up to rescue her.

Rise of the Machines

When Louise Kennedy, an equine veterinarian from Ireland who has worked

in Australia for the past two years on a skilled worker visa, decided to stay in the country, she had to take the Pearson Test of English as part of her requirements for permanent residency. Imagine her surprise when, as a native English speaker with two university degrees, she flunked the oral component of the computer-based test. “There’s obviously a flaw in their computer software when a person with perfect oral fluency cannot get enough points,” Kennedy said. For its part, Pearson has denied that there is any problem with its test or scoring “engine.” Kennedy will pursue a spouse visa so she can remain with her Australian husband.

Seniors Gone Weird

Guests at Scotland’s Macdonald Loch Rannoch hotel were terrorized by Robert Fergus, 72, and his wife, Ruth, 69, in February when the Troon couple rampaged through the lobby with scissors and threatened to shoot other guests. The incident apparently began when Mrs. Fergus pounded on a hotel room door at

1:45 a.m., leading the guest within to call front desk staff, who Mrs. Fergus told her husband treated her “with hostility.”

That’s when Mr. Fergus “reacted disproportionately” by running naked into the lobby with scissors, cutting communications cables and shouting that he would “slit” and “kill” onlookers.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Fergus told staff she was going to “get a gun and shoot you,” according to prosecutor Michael Sweeney. Staff and guests ran out of the hotel, while Mr. and Mrs. Fergus returned to their room to pack and took off in their BMW. They were apprehended when they flagged down a police car to accuse the hotel staff of abusing them, and Mr. Fergus could not pass a breath test.

At their sentencing on Sept. 1, their attorneys blamed overconsumption of alcohol for their behavior, noting that Robert Fergus “had previously been of good character.” Nonetheless, they were fined 4,100 pounds and ordered to pay 800 pounds to cover the cost of damage to the hotel.

THINGS THAT MATTER

THE PEARL HARBOR ATTACK, AND HOW COUNTRIES CAN CHANGE On Dec. 7, 1941, a quiet, uneventful Sunday morning turned into a day that would live in infamy. A reluctant America, still weary from its involvement in World War I, turned into a united nation determined to defeat a new enemy. And a young country that hadn’t lived up to its potential entered a war that would forever change its role on the global stage.

Yes, a lot changed on the day waves of Japanese bombers and submarines struck the unprepared Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, killing more than 2,400 Americans in one of the most surprising, daring and consequential attacks of all time. But the changes go much further than that fateful day on the island of Oahu.

In 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor, the United States declared war on Japan, a conflict that would consist of four years of fighting over jungle islands and hills in a form of brutality that taxes our imagination.

In 2001, Japan fought alongside the United States in combating the newfound global terror threat. Once a member of the Axis Powers, Japan was now a member of a coalition fighting an axis of evil.

The United States spent four years steadfast in destroying the economic powerhouse that drove the Japanese war machine. It would then spend the years after the war transforming Japan’s economy into a free market capitalist system, one that now ranks as the third strongest economy in the world.

The Pearl Harbor attack was largely a result of the U.S. trade embargo against Japan, which prevented the empire from receiving crucial materials like steel and fuel. Now Japan is one of America’s top trading partners.

Japan fought World War II with violence and religious fervor. Long before they attacked Pearl Harbor, the Japanese military occupied China and committed

atrocities against the South Asian countries it conquered.

At the Battle of Iwo Jima, 21,000 Japanese soldiers were involved; only 217 were left alive at its end to be taken prisoner. An estimated 1,000 civilians chose suicide by leaping off cliffs at Saipan instead of surrendering to the “barbarian” American forces. Aircraft manned by able-bodied pilots rained death from the sky with their kamikaze attacks on the U.S. fleet.

Such extreme defiance to surrender led to the U.S. decision to drop atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, killing 100,000 civilians instantly and thousands more afterward.

Japan is now governed by strict pacifism and its constitution outlaws war as a means to settle international disputes. As the best witness of what such great power can do, any sort of nuclear weapon is still barred from Japan’s arsenal.

At one time, the United States’ objective was to bring Japan to its knees. Now one of its major responsibilities is to protect Japan from adversaries like North Korea, a country whose own ideologies are

actually the remnants of imperial Japan, instilled during Korean occupation.

Just as the rallying battle cry said, we should always “remember Pearl Harbor.”

Yet we should also remember how much our country has changed, how Japan has changed and how different we are toward one another.

It would have been difficult to imagine on Dec. 7, 1941, that years later, Japan and the United States would be such crucial partners. Who would have imagined when Franklin Roosevelt passionately cried for war against Japan that Barack Obama and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would one day peacefully stand together at the very same location that once brought them to war? Who would have imagined they would be standing at the same spot where an atomic bomb once obliterated an entire city to end that war?

The events of Pearl Harbor, and the four years of carnage that followed, provide a significant example of what horrible things we are capable of doing to each other. The 76 years since then have also taught us what humanity is capable of — with a little assistance from the hands of time. SNT

FROM CHALK CUES TO SCRATCH SOUPS Salt City Billiards Pool halls, once a popular destination in Central New York, nearly lost another location earlier this year. An early morning fire on Feb. 7 ravaged the Route 11 business Salt City Billiards, a local staple since 1992. When the previous owners decided not to continue operating, that’s when Brian Lipes stepped in with plans to reopen the hall at another spot.

Lipes, who was a regular at the former North Syracuse business, also bought the Salt City Billiards name because of its large Facebook and online presence, figuring it would still attract many outof-towners that play in tournaments. “I bought everything I needed,” Lipes said, “and at the end of April started looking at real estate and applying for all of the licenses such as food and alcohol.”

Lipes and his partners, Mike Farrey and Jason Oot, looked at potential properties in Cicero and North Syracuse before settling on an available 4,500-square-foot space within a small Mattydale plaza at 1900 Brewerton Rd., just across from the AMF Strike ’N Spare bowling alley. This location was perfect, Lipes noted, because it was near the city and every business in the plaza closed daily at 5 p.m., leaving plenty of room in the parking lot for pool customers.

His wife, dad and several friends helped to set up the new location. “On Aug. 12 we started the remodeling by taking out the rug and putting a new one in, then we

painted and remodeled both of the bathrooms, and finished up the ceiling tiles and the kitchen,” Lipes said.

In the early going, Lipes initially only used the back 40 feet of the building and featured only three tables. On Aug. 30, however, the renovated venue was officially opened for business, with 10 9-feet tables, five 7-feet tables and a heated billiard table that features three cushions and no pockets.

Lipes had to make trips next door at Dee’s Diner to grab food for hungry pool players, but the new kitchen area will make it easier to prepare basic bar foods such as boneless wings and pizza. Lipes also received a liquor license Dec. 5, with plans to serve wine and beer beginning this weekend.

People of all ages, anywhere from 20-somethings to seniors, stop by to rack them up. Weekdays attract an older demographic. Lipes estimates more than 30 regulars visit in the daylight hours, while weekends around 8 p.m. can get fairly busy. The price to pay all day is $8, while it costs $5 if you play for an hour or less.

“Since we opened, we have had the best players in the country come to play tournaments,” Lipes said. He noted that in early January more professional players will be coming in before they head to the Turning Stone Resort and Casino’s Event Center, where the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour takes place Jan. 4 to 7.

Or splurge an extra 50 cents for a piping-hot Broken Lasagna bowl, with thick lasagna noodles

accompanying an even thicker tomato base. Abbondanza!

Sandwiches, all named after musical genres, run the gamut from the Americana (turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce and cranberry mayo; $6.50) to the Rock Star (roast beef, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and horseradish; $7.50), with the Emo, featuring peanut butter, banana and fluff, retailing for $4. Maybe it should have been titled the Elvis, instead. All are served on Kaiser, multi-grain, bread or wraps, plus a side of potato chips.

Salads include the Hardcore Cobb and Calypso Chicken Caesar (both $7.50, plus baguette), and there are also cupcakes available for dessert. The Palace Commons is open weekdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Do you feel a greater responsibility because you carry the tradition of New Orleans in your music?

Yes. We’re responsible for the brass band tradition. We know there have been bands before us and it’s time to carry on the tradition and legacy to younger guys. It’s always exciting to continue the inspiration.

Young guys come in and we want to inspire them to do this type of music. There are so many new, different genres: rap, reggae, hip-hop, electronic. When guys want to do this old style of music, just pick up a horn or a drum, that’s inspiring.

The people around us. Whether it’s when we’re traveling around or the city of New Orleans, people give us the motivation to keep doing what we do. You always want to play. You don’t get tired.

Bass drummer Keith Frazier took a few minutes at his home to talk by phone about the New Orleans tradition.

How do people react to your music around the world?

It’s different reactions. Sometimes people are up and ready to go, other times we need to bring them into it. It’s always different and depends on how people feel.

Then it’s the energy we get from the audience: what we give and what they give us.

Were you ever surprised by a crowd’s reaction?

In 1996, we ended up in Damascus, Syria. We were supposed to go to Algeria, but there was a civil war, so they said, “We’ll send you to Syria.” That’s the Middle East,

What inspired you?

My brother Philip. He was playing in a few horn bands and asked me, “Do you want to play with us?” I picked up a bass drum and he got me in. Today, the excitement of the audience, the joy we bring to people of all walks of life, that keeps me going. Music brings people together.

Your bandmate Derrick Tabb developed The Roots of Music, a nonprofit after-school music program for kids.

Tell me about that.

We try to get kids involved in music. It’s how we all started, with marching band.

It’s for kids ages 9 to 14 and based in New Orleans, but we do lots of outreach programs and talk to kids at schools. Kids are getting away from really playing music, so we try to keep them involved. Physically playing music is exercise for both the mind and the body. Standing up, marching, whatever you’re doing, it’s physical.

And in order to play music, you use math.

It helps in that regard, too.

Have you seen many success stories?

Lots of success stories. It’s for at-risk kids in New Orleans. They join music and get inspired. They realize, “If I can do this, I can do better in other classes, too.” Their average goes from C to A. Some have even started their own musical careers.

What advice do you have for people who want to do what you do?

If you want to do it, just do it. Just like our song, “Do Whatcha Wanna.” Do something positive in your life and for the people around you.

Why should people come to your show?

Our shows are all very improvisational.

There’s no telling what we’ll do or how people will react. There’s no set list. We get there and whatever happens happens.

LOCAL MUSICIANS ASSEMBLE FOR SUKOSH FEARON TRIBUTE

A

lifetime of blindness has never kept Sukosh Fearon from becoming one of the most well-loved musicians in Central New York, or walking the streets of Oneida to and from his job at the local bank, or even hitchhiking on his own all the way across the state.

Now his friends and fans are expecting his recent cancer diagnosis won’t hold him back much, either. The singer-keyboardist will be honored with “A Day of Music With Sukosh Fearon,” which takes place Sunday, Dec. 17, 1 to 5 p.m., at the Rusty Rail Party House, 3231 Seneca Turnpike, Canastota.

Fearon himself is planning to start the festivities with a few solo songs, and then his current group Handpicked will take the stage. There will also be a reunion of the surviving members of his first-ever band, Savannah, and more music from other groups. There are more than 40 individual musicians already confirmed to play during the party.

Fearon, whose given name was Robert Henry Fearon III, has always been known as Sukosh because it is the moniker given him by the nurses at the Japanese hospital where he was born in 1953. He was two months premature and weighed barely a few pounds. The hospital staff called him “Sukoshi,” meaning “little one” in Japanese. As he grew up, he shortened that to Sukosh because he felt Sukoshi wasn’t really to his liking, he said.

Fearon attended the New York State School for the Blind in Batavia, where he started taking piano lessons. He admitted he never liked reading the Braille sheet music, so he developed his talents to be able to hear a musical passage a few times and then duplicate it.

He said the school gave him the chance to make lifelong friendships, with a family feeling of becoming as close as brothers and sisters with the other blind and sight-impaired kids there. Many of those friendships have lasted to this day. Fearon said he is expecting some of his School for the Blind pals to attend the party.

He came home to go to Oneida High School for his junior and senior years, graduating in the class of 1972. He then majored in radio and television broadcasting at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, graduating in 1979. Fearon worked at WAER radio station, starting his announcing career under the professional alias of “Sukosh Lanier.” He also worked many years with Jim McVicker, the Singing Mailman, and has even performed and recorded with Americana folk legend Pete Seeger.

The cancer diagnosis was a surprise to Fearon and his wife, Pat. In the late summer, he began to feel increasing pain, but he attributed it to a change in medications he was taking. Feeling that nothing was really wrong, he even visited his parents, Robert and Ada May Fearon, in Florida. But then he found that he had lost 50 pounds. A CAT scan in October revealed the cancer.

Fearon has since adjusted his diet to the condition, finding clementine oranges really help take away the pain, he said.

Keeping up with work at NBT Bank, where he has been since the days when it was Oneida Valley National Bank, is a big part of his own personal therapy.

Likewise, so is listening to music.

“I’m feeling pretty good, and even when I don’t, I work through it,” he said as he munched on a clementine.

Walking the streets of his Oneida hometown is now just a small feat for Fearon, who has hitchhiked across New York state, something that even a sighted person might be leery to try. It was on one of those trips, as he was along the Interstate 81 roadway heading toward the Thousand Islands, where he met the man who introduced him to Pat. Fearon was actually picked up by her late husband Lyle Malbouf, and taken to the Malbouf home for one of Pat’s dinners before being delivered to his destination. Malbouf passed away in 1992.

Perhaps by destiny, Fearon arrived to play a Savannah gig in a taxi in 1994. Pat was there collecting tickets at the door.

Fearon sat with her, and then she gave him a lift back to his house. The couple married on Sept. 16, 2000.

“She’s my darlin’ darlin,’” Fearon is fond of saying.

Now he is looking forward to spending a fun afternoon playing alongside his musical friends. “I am getting psyched,” he said. “I want the endorphins to flow and for everybody to have a good time. It will be great to see so many of my friends from all over the state.”

FIVE DECADES ON THE MARRIAGEGO-ROUND

F

ifty years of marriage.

Nineteen songs. Two characters (with frequent costume changes). And one set: a four-poster bed.

The Tom Jones-Harvey Schmidt musical comedy I Do! I Do! was long a staple of area dinner theaters, and came close to wearing out its welcome, much like its older sibling, the oft-produced JonesSchmidt hit The Fantasticks. But when we encounter the show again after a long absence, such as the welcome Redhouse Arts Center revival running through Dec. 17, we can see its longevity is based on something substantial. There is more to it than mere winsomeness.

I Do! opened in 1966, a year after The Beatles packed Shea Stadium. The Jones-Schmidt musical idiom is a later chapter in the Great American Songbook that began with Jerome Kern about

1913. There is not a hint of jazz or urban rhythms. They also love to play with styles from before 1966, like the soft shoe of the 1920s.

Counterintuitively, this music has aged better than the early rock’n’roll that displaced it, which is why Grease is played as a comedy. Even though the narrative span of I Do! spans a half-century, every musical number takes place in the present.

The musical is based on Jan de Hartog’s 1951 Tony Award-winning play The Fourposter. It was widely produced, filmed in 1952, and never neglected.

In stretching the span of the marriage from the play’s 35 years to 50, Jones and Schmidt recognized that the premise allows for a wide variety of tones, from the naïve embrace of love through bitter conflict and acceptance, presenting two characters with ever-changing emotional colors. (In de Hartog’s original conception, the couple get married in the 1890s, which would better explain their unfamiliarity with how babies are made on their wedding night.)

Director Temar Underwood has cast two young out-of-town professionals for

this long, lyrical journey. Lanky Luke Hamilton brings a ready wit and the body of a Tommy Tune-ish dancer to the role of husband Michael, a pop novelist who sounds like a male Danielle Steel who aspires to be compared with Tolstoy.

Soprano Caroline Strang, seen last year in the Redhouse’s Beauty and the Beast, keeps her mischievousness under a serene façade as Agnes, a stay-at-home mom who sings of emotions ahead of her time.

Having players who appear to be in their 20s reverses the thinking from the original production. Back in 1966 Robert Preston and Mary Martin, both past their prime, sang the roles of Michael and Agnes. The youngsters tip the center of the action toward the beginning of the first act, which celebrates young love with numbers like “Together Forever,” ”I Love My Wife,” and especially “My Cup Runneth Over,” the best-known song of the show, and a standout for Hamilton.

shoe in bare feet. For Michael’s boastful number, “It’s a Well-Known Fact,” Hamilton takes up a top hat and cane and jumps up on the bed. These are young people’s performances. But by the end of the second act, they can mime an arthritic body set, even with their gym-flattened tummies and toned muscles.

From pregnancy to child-bearing and -raising, 50 years do not pass without tension. Agnes favors their son, whom Michael often finds wanting. Michael favors their daughter but rants that she is marrying an idiot at the time of her marriage. Agnes complains that she dislikes boring literary parties where she feels out of place, and Michael corrects her grammar. She tells him his fiction is mediocre, and — whoosh! — he admits to an affair with a younger woman.

Although the musical assignments are equitable, Agnes gets some of the stronger numbers as the action grows. Among them is the show-stopping “Flaming Agnes,” where she responds to Michael’s infidelity as an opening to her liberation, fantasizing about the wild life of an exuberant divorcee.

Even more affecting is her “What Is a Woman,” a preview of the feminist angst not yet on the horizon when the show opened. Agnes and Michael reconciled after his cheating, but with the children grown and gone, she feels superfluous and unwanted. Only an author’s wife, what accomplishments were her own? Ready to announce that she is fleeing the nest herself, Michael responds with the love of the opening scenes, renewed at the end of the cycle.

Of the dozen or so I Do! productions mounted locally over the years, this Redhouse version is by far the richest and best realized. Aside from Strang and Hamilton being peerless young pros, every physical aspect of what’s on stage is the best, starting with Camille Charara’s costumes and Tim Brown’s set, where the four-poster bed is backed by empty picture frames and includes a white, draping scrim. And lighting designer Marie Yokoyama’s black-on-white images of the passing scene includes head shots of Elvis and style excesses of the 1970s. Indeed, this I Do! I Do! transcends time. SNT

MINER DETAILS Mayor Stephanie Miner reflects on her eight years in City Hall

Outgoing Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner probably began considering her political options at a young age, stuffing envelopes with local candidates’ campaign appeals at her grandmother Cooney’s Eastwood kitchen table.

Term-limited, she says she is looking forward to taking lessons learned from the Syracuse experience and bringing them to a classroom at New York University’s Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service. Miner will be at NYU as a Visiting Distinguished Urbanist, “teaching the next generation of urban scholars, political scientists and government leaders.”

Elected as a citywide common councilor in 2001, she was re-elected in 2005, receiving more votes than anyone on the ballot including the incumbent mayor, Matt Driscoll. She was elected mayor in 2009 and re-elected in 2013 with 68 percent of the vote.

After graduating from Syracuse University with concentrations in political science and journalism, Miner worked on Geraldine Ferraro’s Senate campaign and served as Central New York regional representative for Gov. Mario Cuomo. She earned a JD degree from SUNY Buffalo.

Like former Mayor Tom Young (witness Armory Square), Miner will probably not be credited right away for her accomplishments in City Hall. But she has been recognized as a “Trailblazing Woman in Public Finance” by the Northeast Women in Public Finance. Her work in developing one of the first land banks in New York state contributed to IBM’s naming Syracuse as one of the nation’s 100 Smarter Cities, which should help counter its recognition as one of America’s most segregated and poverty stricken.

Political options for the future are opening for Miner. Originally maintaining that she had no interest in challenging Republican Rep. John Katko for his 24th District congressional seat, a logical next step in the minds of many Democratic activists, she recently refocused on a possible run, energized by opposition to the tax bill being debated by Congress. She scheduled a Dec. 5 “Tax Town Town Hall” meeting at City Hall to share her opposition with local

elected officials, maintaining that the bill raises taxes on working families, increases the deficit and cuts taxes for billionaires.

Miner has also expressed interest in challenging Gov. Mario Cuomo in a Democratic primary, an effort that one recent poll showed might reveal a lack of support for Cuomo statewide, especially outside the New York City area.

How was your term as mayor?

It was a great privilege, one that I am thankful for every single day. It was a terrific adventure. I got to work for people that I have a great deal of affection for. Got to work with people that I enjoy, and got to do the kind of work that is intellectually and emotionally challenging and rewarding. What more could you want out of a job?

What’s coming?

Cities are downhill from all levels of government, and we are seeing a tremendous tumult in the federal government and also in state government. Cities are the future of economic development, and with the global economy that we have, you have to have the kind of creativity and energy that comes from people coming together and thinking about things and building on each other.

So Syracuse has the assets to really flourish in the future. But it needs to have public policy from both the federal and state level that is thoughtful and focused on doing really good and thoughtful approaches to government and public policy.

What are the city’s assets?

There are a ton of them. You start off with the fact that we have a work force that has a tremendous work ethic. We have institutions of higher learning and hospitals, so we have very highly educated, highly skilled personnel who are not going to get up and move someplace else.

We are right between Canada and New York City. Canada is our largest trading partner. They have to come through Syracuse in order to be that.

We have lots of infrastructure, that while old, can be brought up to the 21st century relatively easily if it’s made a priority and a focus. We’re right on the cutting edge of having all the assets necessary in order to thrive in the 21st century.

In all the eight years, what was absolutely the best thing?

I can’t answer that question because it was almost all good. The challenges, the people that I got to work with, the issues I got to work with, the people that I got to know. It was challenging personally and professionally in a really profound way.

And there is really something rewarding about looking at the work that you do and knowing that you have an impact at a time and a place that it matters.

I worked with terrific people here in City Hall. The workforce here is above and beyond to make sure that they answer the call of the people who are in our city, whether they are residents or citizens or just people traveling through. Working with the people I got to work with, working on the issues I got to work with that are on the cutting edge of where we are as a country, and thinking about what government should provide, and what it shouldn’t provide and how do we meet these challenges.

Was there one thing that made you want to quit?

It’s not in my genetic makeup to quit.

It’s just not part of who I am. But at the lowest point, clearly gun violence. It’s just irrational, and too often it’s young men who one day would be the victim

and 48 hours later could be the aggressor.

And the lowest point was really when the toddler was shot in his car seat when someone was trying to kill his father.

There’s a current street logic that says, “Yo, if we had jobs, we wouldn’t be shooting each other.”

I think there’s something to be said for that generally, but I also think there’s a certain responsibility that people have to own as well. It is deviant behavior to pick up a gun and shoot at another young person and take their life. If we had a better economy, could we interrupt the violence? I think it would be much easier to interrupt the violence. But when a 17-, 18- or 19-year-old picks up a gun and shoots at someone he knows, often there’s a whole breakdown in society that has caused that to happen.

At this point to say it’s the lack of a job, there are family breakdowns, there are neighborhood breakdowns, there are school breakdowns. And what we have also seen is that, relatively speaking, it’s a small group of offenders. Trying to break that cycle is really hard because you can take them out of that place for a period of time but then they go right back in with all of the same stimulus and the same kind of outcomes. Chicago, Baltimore, New Orleans, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, we are all experiencing the same kind of issue.

What does Donald Trump represent as president?

I think it’s important for our country that we have to determine what kind of national government do we want. Do we want

a national government that aims all its policies at taking care of rich people? Do we want a government that says that only rich people can have health care, access to clean water and good infrastructure? That only poor people and middle-class people will pay taxes? Or do we want a government that says we want to make sure that everybody has opportunity?

That’s being played out every day in our country, every day in our cities. I think you’re seeing more and more people understand that in a democracy everybody has a responsibility to make sure they have the kind of government that they want.

What kind of congressperson would you make?

I think that people in Central New York deserve to be represented by someone who can see how the local is global. As mayor, I’ve tried to raise the profile of issues impacting our community, notably education through Say Yes and the need for more investment in infrastructure.

I have also prided myself on having an open office, attending and hosting community meetings, and responding to the people of Syracuse. I think the priority of any elected official needs to be listening before acting and hearing their constituents out. It builds respect and trust and helps leaders enact better public policy What kind of governor would you make?

I think, by definition, I would be iconoclastic. The last upstate governor was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, so it’s not a

bad person to follow. I think, as Michelle Obama said, the job doesn’t give you character, it exposes what kind of character you have. I think that the past eight years as a mayor, and before that as a city councilor, people have seen that I’m an aggressive advocate, somebody who speaks to the issues the way I see them, regardless of how powerful, how moneyed or what party the person on the other side is. That I’m a truth-teller. That I believe in public policy. And I believe in policy that will help everybody take advantage of the opportunities of this country, not just a select few.

What would be the most fun if, as has been suggested, you and state Sen. John DeFrancisco toured together to promote your potential gubernatorial candidacies?

Sen. DeFrancisco has a litigator’s training, so he’s got a great verbal spark to him. And I would enjoy playing off of that because the senator and I are different political parties, we have different political philosophies.

But what I have found with him, which is so refreshing, is that you can have these political disagreements in public and it doesn’t become personal. He is smart.

He is thoughtful, so you better bring your A-game when you’re coming to him on a policy or on a discussion.

We have had times when we agreed.

We have had times when we disagreed.

But we have always been able to work together to forward the best interest of our constituents. SNT

SILVER ANNIVERSARY FOR WOMEN ARTISTS DATEBOOK The notion of committee work typically receives mixed reviews. Decades ago, one wag remarked that a zebra is a horse designed by committee. However, the Syracuse Cultural Workers have long used a committee structure to launch their Women Artists Datebook, a pocket-sized (5-by-7-inch) publication now in its 25th edition. The 2018 datebook ($16.95) is currently being sold not only in Syracuse but across the country: via online transactions, at independent bookstores, food co-ops and small museums.

Last December, selection of poems and artworks for the datebook began with a two-track process. Georgia Popoff, the committee’s poetry editor, reviewed submissions from roughly 300 poets and narrowed them down to 30 or 40. The other committee members, Lisa Mattes, Karen Kerney and Maxx Hill, looked over pieces sent in by almost 100 artists. There was a day of intense review on which they viewed images of works that had been pasted all over the walls of a large room.

After further deliberation and consultation with other members of the Cultural Workers staff, the committee chose 16 artworks and 15 poems for the datebook.

The art comes in various styles. There are pieces in lavish color like Sandy Bot-Miller’s “Coping with Life Through the Lens of a Labyrinth” and stark works such as “New Growth,” a pen-and-ink drawing by Aimee Bungard. Figurative work like Veronica Winters’ “Rosa Parks’ Dreamer” appears, and so does “Break the Cycle,” a mixed-media collage by Maureen Farrell. Lucie Wellner’s watercolor, “Winter Scene Study,” subtly interprets snow-covered trees and sparse vegetation.

Lori Chilefone created “The Commute,” cover art for the 2018 datebook. It shows a woman in flight over a city, involved with traveling to work, childcare, getting the day started.

The poems include observational poems such as Nancy Dafoe’s “A Piece of the Berlin Wall”; intensely personal work like Andrea Potos’ “Mother, Leaving”; and “Hard Work,” in which Kathleen Aguero describes hope as the final stage of a journey full of striving and struggle.

Callard, echoes the abolitionist’s voice during a trip southward to help lead slaves to freedom. And “Inquiry,” by Signature Mimi, both investigates and affirms self discovery.

The publication has, well, lots of dates but the notations follow a different path from most datebooks or calendars. There are holidays listed for multiple faiths: Christian and Jewish, Hindu and Muslim, Buddhist, Baha’i and Wiccan. In addition, the datebook references the Haudenosaunee calendar by including the 13 moons of that lunar calendar. Human-rights observance is also a priority, with mentions of the Armenian Day of Remembrance, World Press Freedom Day, and National Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Kerney notes that the datebook is hardly a mass-consumption item. With its content and publication by an independent cultural group, it falls into a small-market niche. Yet from year to year, the Cultural Workers continue to work with a press run of 4,000, selling almost all the copies of a particular edition.

The Cultural Workers also produce the annual Peace Calendar, in its 47th edition. The 2018 calendar moves from

a community art space in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood to a mural in Belfast, Northern Ireland, depicting Frederick Douglass, Bob Marley and other figures, from a photo collage detailing protests at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City to images of the Jan. 21, 2017, Women’s March on Washington, D.C. Other illustrations focus on permaculture, the refugee crisis in Syria, and months of demonstrations at Standing Rock, S.D. Such products originate in the Cultural Workers’ office at 400 Lodi St., within the Hawley-Green neighborhood and a hub of grassroots organizations. That office is a half-block from the ArtRage Gallery and the storefront for In My Father’s Kitchen, an organization that feeds and supports people who are homeless.

Kerney says that the office has both a local home and a national imprint. “In some ways, we’re better known nationally than locally,” she said.
