ELECTION ROUNDUP

An Independence, Missouri, city councilman who was not on the Nov. 6 ballot managed to let his temper get away from him that morning at a church polling station. Witnesses told KSHB-TV that councilman Tom Van Camp was in the parking lot of the church when another man yelled at him, “Tom Van Camp, you SOB!” Witness Lee Williams said the man then approached Van Camp, and the next time she looked up, Van Camp and the man were “down there on the grass and they’re punching each other. I was just shocked to see my councilman in a fist fight.” A voter called police, who responded, but both men had already left the scene in separate vehicles. Van Camp is under fire in Independence for spending public money on personal travel. He is up for re-election in 2020.

SUPERMARKET SWEEP

While shopping at a Peoria, Illinois, Walmart on Sept. 20, an unnamed 30-year-old woman filled her cart but also added a few items to her backpack: leggings, pencils, a quart of oil and a “Jesus Calling” Bible. After she paid for only the items in her cart, a loss prevention officer stopped her before she left the store. Peoria police were summoned, reported the Peoria Journal Star, and the woman explained to them she was hop-

POLITICS IN VIRGINIA

The Associated Press reported on Nov. 7 that Virginia’s 5th Congressional District has a new Republican representative: Denver Riggleman, who beat Democrat Leslie Cockburn despite Cockburn’s suggestion in July that Riggleman was unfit for the office because of a Bigfoot erotica book he had written, The Mating Habits of Bigfoot and Why Women Want Him. While Riggleman is indeed the author of Bigfoot Exterminators Inc.: The Partially Cautionary, Mostly True Tale of Monster Hunt 2006, he says the erotica book was a joke among himself and buddies from the military. By the way, Distillery owner Riggleman entered the race when incumbent Tom Garrett dropped out after announcing he is an alcoholic.

ing the Bible could help her spiritually: “(She) told me that it sounds strange, but she was trying to be more Christian,” an officer reported. She was charged with misdemeanor theft.

COMPELLING EXPLANATION

After trying repeatedly on Sept. 12 to pull over a Toyota Prius driving with expired tags on I-5 near Marysville, Washington, a Washington State Patrol Jen Sorensen

officer finally caught up to the car at an intersection and verbally instructed the unnamed 42-year-old woman driver to pull over, reported the Everett Daily Herald. “I will not. I drive a Prius,” was the woman’s reply. The officer then asked her to step out of the vehicle, which she also refused to do, so he forced her out. “I will own your bank account,” she told him. “I will own your house.” When he asked her name, she responded, “None of your business.” Finally, she was arrested for failing to obey instructions, failing to identify herself and obstruction.

WILD KINGDOM

An unnamed 26-year-old British woman appeared at Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria Hospital emergency room in Mojon de Arona, Tenerife, in the Canary Islands on Sept. 15 with extreme pain in her groin area. El Pais reported the doctor who examined her was surprised to find a dead, immature Chinese pond turtle lodged in her vagina. The woman told police she had attended a beach party the night before but could not remember what happened. (Given that the freshwater species is sold in pet shops, it’s not likely that it got there by accident.) Police suspect she may have been the victim of a sexual assault, but she chose not to file a complaint.

MURDER, SHE WROTE

Romance novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy, 68, was arrested on Sept. 5 on charges of murdering her husband, Daniel Brophy, 63, in Portland, Oregon, after apparently following her own advice, written in a 2011 essay titled “How to Murder Your Husband.” In the essay, Crampton Brophy suggests that hiring a

hit man is “never a good idea” and poison is traceable. Instead, reported The Oregonian, she allegedly shot her husband on June 2 at the Oregon Culinary Institute where Daniel was a beloved chef. Police did not release a motive, and a neighbor said Crampton Brophy “never showed any signs of being upset or sad.” On Sept. 17, she pleaded not guilty in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

BARE MARKET

The Martin County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office has received repeated calls about a man in a Stuart neighborhood who conducts chores around the outside of his house in the nude. “I came out Sunday night to put the trash out, and I look over and he is bent over, winding up his hose, and I’m like that is my view of the neighborhood,” huffed Melissa Ny to WPBFTV on Sept. 19. Other neighbors are taking a more measured approach. “Literally they are the nicest people you’ll ever meet; they would give you their clothes if they had them on to give them to you,” neighbor Aimee Canterbury told WPTV. The sheriff’s department says there is nothing they can do as long as the man is on his own property and not touching himself inappropriately. The nudist declined to be interviewed, saying he and his family are private people.

BUGGING OUT

2018 was a banner year for the spider population of Aitoliko, Greece, according to the Associated Press. Fueled by a huge increase in the numbers of lake flies, which the spiders eat, the spiders reproduced unusually fast and have covered coastal trees, bushes and low vegetation with blankets of thick, sticky webs. The webs ran along a few hundred meters of the shoreline in the western Greek town and, according to residents, had the unexpected advantage of keeping mosquitoes away.

EWWWWW!

A husband and wife have been exposed as murderers and cannibals in Krasnodar in southern Russia, reported The Express on Sept. 28. Natalia Baksheeva, 43, has confessed to killing and eating dozens of victims with her husband, Dmitry, 35, over 18 years. Investigators were tipped off to the couple’s gruesome culinary tastes after a 35-year-old waitress, Elena Vashrusheva, and Natalia fought over

accusations that Vashrusheva was flirting with Dmitry. Natalia ordered her husband to kill Vashrusheva: “Following this demand, the man took out the knife that he always kept in his bag and stabbed the woman twice in her chest. The victim died from her injuries on the spot,” investigators reported. Police charged Natalia with one count of goading her husband into killing the woman after they found “steamed,” pickled and frozen human remains belonging to Vashrusheva in the couple’s kitchen. A photo found in their apartment from 1999 showed a human head served as dinner, garnished with mandarin oranges. Dmitry, who has tuberculosis, will be charged at a later date.

ABUSED by CLERGY in

NEW YORK?

SELFIE-INFLICTED

Tu Thanh Nguyen, 32, of Sunnyvale, California, made two crucial mistakes while she was visiting Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan on Sept. 19. First, Nguyen was hiking alone, reported WLUC News. But her fatal error was stopping at a point along the North Country Trail to take selfies, where she slipped and fell 200 feet to her death in Lake Superior. Two kayakers witnessed her fall and retrieved her body, which they moved to Chapel Beach. However, first responders were unable to revive her.

ANIMAL FARM

Three cheeky raccoons jolted a Toronto, Ontario, Canada, woman awake late on Sept. 18 when they broke into her kitchen. Jenny Serwylo heard noises coming from her kitchen and approached the critters with a broom, which scared away two out of the three. But a third wouldn’t budge, barricaded behind her toaster oven and munching on a package of English muffins. “He was like, ‘I’m eating, get out of here,’” Serwylo told The Toronto Star. She tried calling authorities but couldn’t get any help, and her contest of wills with the raccoon lasted for more than a halfhour. “I was growling at him and hissing at him,” she said. As she pointed the broom handle at the animal, it would grab the end and “yank it really hard.” Finally, having consumed all the bread in the kitchen, the raccoon calmly went out the window, which Serwylo locked behind it. Toronto Animal Services spokesperson Bruce Hawkins told the Star that such encounters are unusual, but you be the judge: The city has created a guide for residents about how to deal with raccoon intrusions.

“For the state Senate to oppose Amazon was governmental malpractice,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo stated on Feb. 8. “You’re not there to play politics. You’re there to do what’s right for the people of the State of New York. And what they did here was wrong.” Michael Davis photo

THINGS THAT MATTER

BLOCKING AMAZON State Senate could derail tech giant’s plans to build a New York City headquarters BY LUKE PARSNOW Gov. Andrew Cuomo has had a very good month. With a new Democratic majority in both chambers of the New York state Legislature operating at breakneck speed, he has been able to sign off on a flurry of progressive bills that he has wanted for years, from codifying Roe vs. Wade into state law, to providing financial assistance to illegal immigrants, to extending the statute of limitations for child sex abuse victims.

6

This honeymoon phase hit a serious roadblock last week, however, when it came to one of Cuomo’s most touted accomplishments of 2018: the deal to build half of Amazon’s second headquarters in New York City. In an incredible signal of defiance, state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins decided to name Sen. Michael Gianaris to the Public Authorities Control Board, a panel that is not well

02.13.19 - 02.19.19 | syracusenew times.com

known but may carry enough weight to sink the whole agreement with the internet retail giant. Gianaris has been a fierce critic of the Amazon deal, which over the last two months has received backlash from both the most progressive liberals and traditional conservatives in state government. That’s because of the nearly $3 billion in tax breaks New York will be giving the company to build its facility in Queens. “Our governments bend over backward to provide billions in benefits for the one corporation that needs it the least,” Gianaris said in December. Gianaris’ position on the control board could prove decisive. Any member has the power to stop projects that come before it. And the board has sank other major deals in the recent past, including one for a new stadium in Manhattan under Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration. That’s not to say Cuomo is powerless. Far from it. He must first approve Gianaris to the board. And even if he does and the board ultimately votes to stop the deal, Cuomo can veto their decision. But this seems like the first time in a long time that the Legislature has flexed its muscle as a co-equal branch of government. And boy, is it ever nice to see. Until January, Cuomo had presided over a divided Legislature for his entire eightyear tenure, usually keeping in line with his fellow Democrats against a common opponent in the Republican-controlled Senate. Now there is no Republican chamber to stop Cuomo from doing what he wants to do. But that doesn’t mean Democrats should be willing to bow to his every command. And why should they? The Child Victims Act, the Dream Act and other laws

like it have been extremely popular in Democratic circles, but there are many Democrats who have had a lot of reservations about the state’s agreement with Amazon. Offering almost $3 billion in tax giveaways to the richest company in the world in the same year where the state suddenly suffers a $2.3 billion budget deficit should make most of us uneasy. Add in the facts that this deal with Amazon was made in secret with little or no public input, and that Cuomo used a state development process in order to crush opposition from the city. It’s no wonder that the Legislature decided to wield their power and pump the breaks on Cuomo’s Amazon wish list. It’s a nice signal to Cuomo, a proven micromanager who knows how to use his authority to get what he wants, that the Legislature should make more use of. All too often in the recent past, its members seemed to follow Cuomo’s marching orders even when they disagreed with him. Last year, Cuomo once again vetoed a bill that would offer a better retirement plan to corrections officers who work in county jails. That was the third year in a row that the bill received almost unanimous bipartisan support in the Legislature. It passed the Assembly, 141–2, and the Senate, 61–0. Cuomo says every time that the measure should be negotiated into the state budget, which is his usual scapegoat because he holds a heavy hand when hacking out the state’s finances. Then the Legislature surrenders to that notion, as lawmakers shrug and say they’ll try again next year. If they think the bill is important enough to bring to the floor every year with such huge support, they should at least consider overriding the governor’s veto. They definitely have the votes for it but never seem to have the guts to act without his permission. Thankfully, Sen. Stewart-Cousins believed that the stakes of the massive Amazon agreement were too great for New York taxpayers for Cuomo to act alone without any kind of oversight. It’s not about sending Gianaris in there just to disrupt the entire process. It’s about having a crucial voice in the room that is not an automatic “yes man” to Cuomo. As Stewart-Cousins wrote in a letter, Sen. Gianaris “will bring an important perspective and accountability to this board as it reviews numerous projects.” That voice is something Cuomo is not used to, but maybe he better get used to it. His party may have the majority in Albany, but that still doesn’t mean he has total control.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19) When directors of

movies say, “It’s a wrap,” they mean that the shooting of a scene has been finished. They may use the same expression when the shooting of the entire film is completed. That’s not the end of the creative process, of course. All the editing must still be done. Once that’s accomplished, the producer may declare that the final product is “in the can,” and ready to be released or broadcast. From what I can determine, Aries, you’re on the verge of being able to say, “It’s a wrap” for one of your own projects. There will be more work before you’re ready to assert, “It’s in the can.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) In accordance

with astrological omens, I invite you to create your own royal throne and sit on it whenever you need to think deep thoughts and formulate important decisions. Make sure your power chair is comfortable as well as beautiful and elegant. To enhance your ability to wield your waxing authority with grace and courage, I also encourage you to fashion your own crown, scepter and ceremonial footwear. They, too, should be comfortable, beautiful and elegant.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) In 1995, astronomer Bob Williams got a strong urge to investigate a small scrap of the night sky that most other astronomers regarded as boring. It was near the handle of the constellation known as the Big Dipper. Luckily for him, he could ignore his colleagues’ discouraging pressure. That’s because he had been authorized to use the high-powered Hubble Space Telescope for a 10-day period. To the surprise of everyone but Williams, his project soon discovered that this seemingly unremarkable part of the heavens is teeming with more than 3,000 galaxies. I suspect you may have a challenge akin to Williams’, Gemini. A pet project or crazy notion of yours may not get much support, but I hope you’ll pursue it anyway. I bet your findings will be different from what anyone expects. CANCER (June 21-July 22) A study by the

Humane Research Council found that more than 80 percent of those who commit to being vegetarians eventually give up and return to eating meat. A study by the National Institute of Health showed that only about 36 percent of alcoholics are able to achieve full recovery; the remainder relapse. And we all know how many people make New Year’s resolutions to exercise more often, but then stop going to the gym by February. That’s the bad news. The good news, Cancerian, is that during the coming weeks you will possess an enhanced power to stick with any commitment you know is right and good for you. Take advantage!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Are there two places

on earth more different from each other than Europe and Africa? Yet there is a place, the Strait of Gibraltar, where Europe and Africa are just 8.7 miles apart. Russia and the United States are also profoundly unlike each other, but only 2.5 miles apart where the Bering Strait separates them. I foresee a metaphorically comparable phenomenon in your life. Two situations or influences or perspectives that may seem to have little in common will turn out to be closer to each other than you imagined possible.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgo basketball

star Latrell Sprewell played professionally for 13 years. He could have extended his career at least three more seasons, but he turned down an offer for $21 million from the Minnesota team, complaining that it wouldn’t be sufficient to feed his four children. I will ask you not to imitate his behavior, Virgo. If you’re offered a deal or opportunity that doesn’t perfectly meet all your requirements, don’t dismiss it out of hand. A bit of compromise is sensible right now.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) In 1992, an Ethiopi-

an man named Belachew Girma became an alcoholic after he saw his wife die from AIDS. And yet today he is renowned as a Laughter Master, having dedicated himself to explore the healing powers of ebullience and amuse-

BY ROB BREZSNY ment. He presides over a school that teaches people the fine points of laughter, and he holds the world’s record for longest continuous laughter at three hours and six minutes. I nominate him to be your role model in the next two weeks. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you will be especially primed to benefit from the healing power of laughter. You’re likely to encounter more droll and whimsical and hilarious events than usual, and your sense of humor should be especially hearty and finely tuned.

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE

DELAYED

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) A study published

in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science suggests that people who use curse words tend to be more candid. “Swearing is often inappropriate but it can also be evidence that someone is telling you their honest opinion,” said the lead researcher. “Just as they aren’t filtering their language to be more palatable, they’re also not filtering their views.” If that’s true, Scorpio, I’m going to encourage you to curse more than usual in the coming weeks. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, it’s crucial that you tell as much of the whole truth as is humanly possible. (P.S. Your cursing outbursts don’t necessarily have to be delivered with total abandon everywhere you go. You could accomplish a lot just by going into rooms by yourself and exuberantly allowing the expletives to roll out of your mouth.)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) In the mid-

1980s, a California carrot farmer grew frustrated with the fact that grocery stories didn’t want to buy his broken and oddly shaped carrots. A lot of his crop was going to waste. Then he got the bright idea to cut and shave the imperfect carrots so as to make smooth little baby carrots. They became a big success. Can you think of a metaphorically comparable adjustment you could undertake, Sagittarius? Is it possible to transform a resource that’s partially going to waste? Might you be able to enhance your possibilities by making some simple modifications?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Mongolia is

a huge landlocked country. It borders no oceans or seas. Nevertheless, it has a navy of seven sailors. Its lone ship is a tugboat moored on Lake Khovsgol, which is 3 percent the size of North America’s Lake Superior. I’m offering up the Mongolian navy as an apt metaphor for you to draw inspiration from in the coming weeks. I believe it makes good astrological sense for you to launch a seemingly quixotic quest to assert your power, however modestly, in a situation that may seem out of your league.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “A freshness

lives deep in me which no one can take from me,” wrote poet Swedish poet Gunnar Ekelöf. “Something unstilled, unstillable is within me; it wants to be voiced,” wrote philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. In accordance with your astrological omens, I propose we make those two quotes your mottoes for the next four weeks. In my opinion, you have a mandate to tap into what’s freshest and most unstillable about you — and then cultivate it, celebrate it, and express it with the full power of your grateful, brilliant joy.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) According to the Encyclopedia of Occultism and Parapsychology, the word “obsession” used to refer to the agitated state of a person who was besieged by rowdy or unruly spirits arriving from outside the person. “Possession,” on the other hand, once meant the agitated state of a person struggling against rowdy or unruly spirits arising from within. In the Western Christian perspective, both modes have been considered primarily negative and problematic. In many other cultures, however, spirits from both the inside and outside have sometimes been regarded as relatively benevolent, and their effect quite positive. As long as you don’t buy into the Western Christian view, I suspect that the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to consort with spirits like those.

LIFE IN KOKOMVILLE Photographer Michael Greenlar explores the Algonquin settlement in Quebec, Canada, in a two-site exhibit BY CARL MELLOR

tarting in 1988, Syracuse photographer Michael Greenlar visited an Algonquin community in Quebec, Canada, several times a year. In a remote area 90 miles from a city, the members of the First Nation Algonquin Band of Barriere Lake live on a 57-acre reserve or in settlements located farther back in the bush. Greenlar stayed at and photographed a who lived from 1913 to 1997. across a lake. In another image, her grandson, Jacob Wawatie, strides across a frozen lake in midwinter as he sets out to trap beaver. The people living at Kokomville survive by hunting, trapping and fishing, and some of the best images document that work. For example, Lena and Jacob sit on a moose he shot. The animal was later dressed and processed, supplying not only many pounds of meat but also moose hide used for several purposes. In a companion photo, Lena Nottaway’s daughter, Lena Jerome, stretches hide to make webbing for snowshoes. And several images document community events: Lena Nottaway blessing a baby; her grandson’s wedding, which blended Algonquin customs and Roman Catholic ritual; and her funeral. A photo taken at the gravesite depicts a floral wreath decorated with an image of a pipe; Lena was known for the pipe she carried with her. The exhibition documents life at Kokomville but certainly doesn’t romanticize it. Lena Nottaway outlived two

husbands, both of whom died in hunting accidents in which they drowned. Moreover, the community survives only by working hard, by making use of natural resources and sharing them. When Jacob shot the moose, the meat was shared with the entire community. In addition, it’s sometimes necessary for Kokomville residents to seek work elsewhere. Greenlar was photographing migrant workers in western New York during the 1970s when he first encountered Jacob Wawatie. He and others from the settlement were working at a mink farm. Those ties led to a long-term friendship, to an initial visit to Kokomville in 1988 and to subsequent trips. Ongoing contacts made it easier for Greenlar to take intimate photos. They include images of a child in a cradleboard, Jacob and his son in a canoe and the funeral service for Lena Nottaway’s son, Dolphis Jerome. These photos provide emotional depth and elevate the overall project. This isn’t the first time Greenlar has done in-depth work. He has photo-

In addition, he’s worked as a staff photographer for the Syracuse Post-Standard. Kokom Lena of the First Nation Algonquin is on display at ArtRage through March 23. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Fridays, 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. There will be several presentations in conjunction with the ArtRage exhibit. On Feb. 28, 7 p.m., Oren Lyons, faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy, will discuss ongoing attempts to erase indigenous culture and language. On March 4, 7 p.m., Greenlar will deliver an artist’s talk. Both events are free and open to the public. And at Ska-nonh, 6680 Onondaga Lake Parkway, Greenlar’s show runs through April 30. The center is open Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. SNT syracusenew times.com | 02.13.19 - 02.19.19

LIVIN’ LA VIDA LOW CARB

Fat is where it’s at with the keto-centric menu at Dolce Vita BY MARGARET MCCORMICK

A

ntonietta Vigliotti remembers the moment she decided to introduce a keto-friendly menu at her restaurant, Dolce Vita World Bistro, 907 E. Genesee St. After a long day at the Renzi Food Show in Lake Placid last year, Vigliotti returned to her hotel room and ordered a salad, with a special request: no tomatoes, no croutons and no bread on the side. The salad arrived with a half-loaf of Italian bread, which she strictly avoids as part of her low-carb way of eating. Frustrated, she walked down the hall and tossed the bread in the trash. On the drive back to Syracuse, she had time to think. When you go out to eat or order food from a restaurant, dietary restrictions and accommodations are an important consideration. “How can I be upset at a restaurant for not offering keto options if we don’t?” she recalls thinking to herself.

12

In June, Dolce Vita offered the first of its “Keto Thursdays.” They posted about it on Facebook, shared the entree and dessert offerings and welcomed a few tables of diners. Each week, Vigliotti welcomed more guests for “Keto Thursday” and eventually told her kitchen staff to prepare to do keto every night. “It has been a keto takeover,” she says. Dolce Vita is not the only restaurant where you can “do keto,” but Vigliotti believes it is the only restaurant in Central New York with a dedicated keto menu for lunch and dinner and a selection of decadent keto desserts made in house every day. That’s in addition to the restaurant’s regular lunch, dinner and bar menus. For the uninitiated, keto is short for the ketogenic diet, a low-carb, high-fat way of eating that is similar to the Atkins weight loss program. The diet involves drastically reducing the intake of carbohydrates (think pasta, potatoes,

02.13.19 - 02.19.19 | syracusenew times.com

bread) and replacing carbohydrates with fat. The reduction of carbs puts the body into a metabolic state known as ketosis, which forces the body to burn fat rather than carbs. On keto, people count the macronutrients (grams of fat, protein and carbohydrates) they need to eat rather than counting calories. Keto-friendly foods include meat, poultry, seafood, cheese, butter, cream, olives, nuts, avocados, olive oil and coconut oil, berries and non-starchy vegetables like kale, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and spaghetti squash; the latter two are popular replacements for pasta. For Vigliotti, 48, creating a dedicated keto-centric menu has been relatively easy. She lives what she calls “the keto life” and has lost more than 150 pounds in three years. For the restaurant, she started by thinking about what she eats at home and some of the foods she misses sometimes, like bread and pasta. “Almost

everything can be ‘keto-fied,’” she says. On the menu, diners will find keto pretzels served with Dijon mustard, keto pizza with an almond crust and traditional toppings like cheese and meat, zucchini noodles (zoodles) and keto tacos with crispy shells made with cheese and the usual fillings and garnishes. Zoodles are one of the bestsellers, Vigliotti says, served with either three-cheese sauce or Cajun cream sauce; add meat if you like. If steak is your thing, there’s a ribeye entrée with cauliflower mash on the side. Craving a burger with a bun? Keto buns, made with almond flour, are baked in house. Or you can have a bunless burger. You can also order anything off the regular menu and substitute keto sides, like sriracha cauliflower mash, for potatoes. The dessert selection changes regularly, but you might find pound cake, birthday cake, double chocolate cake and a rotating roster of cheesecake selections. Cheesecake lends itself especially well to keto, Vigliotti says. The cheesecake rotation includes Snickers cheesecake, Reese’s Cup cheesecake (peanut butter and chocolate) and espresso Irish cream cheesecake. Most desserts are made with almond flour (or coconut flour on occa-

sion) and the sugar substitute Xylitol. “The response has been fantastic,” Vigliotti says. Vigliotti’s weight loss journey began several years ago. She was inspired by the story of Ronnie Brower, a Syracuse man who lost more than 400 pounds and transformed his life with help from trainers Nick Murphy and Jill Rupert at Mission Fitness. They introduced her to keto and to regular fitness training. Vigliotti is Italian American and food has always been a big part of her life. At family dinners, pasta is often on the table, along with Italian cookies and other treats. “I’ve kept the weight off for more than a year,” she says. “I feel great. I have more energy. Your desire to be healthy has to be more than a temporary feeling of satisfaction.” At Christmastime, she says, she got “a little off-track” from keto. She’s back on it now, she says, and would like to lose an additional 30 pounds. Critics of the keto diet say its emphasis on fat makes it an unhealthy way to eat and lose weight. Vigliotti says she is thrilled with her results, she’s in it for the long run and happy to share what she has learned with others. Dolce Vita hosts “Keto Mix and Mingle” events and Vigliotti also has a “keto life” podcast. “I’m not an expert,” she says. “I can only share what works for me, my own experience with keto. At the end of the day, you have to do what works for you.” Margaret McCormick is a freelance writer and editor in Syracuse. She blogs about food at eatfirst.typepad. com. RYAN McMAHON THE NEW ONONDAGA COUNTY EXECUTIVE DRIVES AN AMBITIOUS AGENDA BY WALT SHEPPERD

R 14

02.13.19 - 02.19.19 | syracusenew times.com

yan McMahon, who was recently elected Onondaga County Executive by the County Legislature, believes he is the only person in the history of the county to have gained a unique perspective on running the governments of both the county and the city of Syracuse.

“I was a city councilor,” he reflects. “I was the chair of the County Legislature, and I am now county executive. I’m learning every day that you have to drive an agenda and be a voice for the region when going to Albany or (Washington) D.C. on every issue big and small.” McMahon says his current agenda is dominated by “three issues we talk about every day, and our team gets sick about hearing them. But they’re all related and we need to improve on every one of these issues or else we can’t meet our potential as a community: our modernization of our infrastructure; reapplying and reworking our efforts on economic development; and then the third, which I think is our community’s moral calling, is poverty. So the question becomes: What do we do, and how do we get the message out to the public?” McMahon says that if we educate the public on these issues and address why they’re important, we’ll have the will from the community to get the agenda through whatever legislative body we need to get the agenda through. He is working to educate the public on his issues through town hall meetings ranging from Fayetteville to the Southwest Community Center, including Cicero, Skaneateles and Salina, as well as collaborating with groups like Leadership Greater Syracuse and the NAACP. Among other age-unique perspectives, McMahon’s colleagues on the County Legislature elected him their chair, the youngest ever to serve in that role, at age 38. He first sat on that board to represent constituents in the City of Syracuse and the towns of Geddes and Onondaga. He will probably not, however, be doing too much boasting about another job he has inherited with the county gig: major mover for the water system. “Our sewer system, in particular, is failing,” he notes. “Part of the problem that we and the DEC agree on is that the pipes are the problem.” The problem is compounded, McMahon observes, by the county not owning the pipes. They are owned by the city and towns that don’t have the money to fix them. “It means new pipes,” he says, “and we need to figure out who pays for the pipes, and we (the county) are not going

to pay for the pipes unless we own the pipes. Once our infrastructure is in good order, we have the ability to take advantage of our greatest resource we have in Central New York, which is our water.” As much time as is required to enhance the economic development that McMahon seeks — asking business owners what are their plans to expand, who do they do business with and how can we get them here — he insists his most important job is being a dad. “I have a wonderful wife, and she needs help at night. So we still get our kids off to school in the morning, and I’m there most nights to put them to bed, and on weekends I’m still coaching my son’s basketball and soccer teams. So we’re going to make it work for our family.” To make it work for other county families, McMahon knows his administration must foster opportunity. “Where do we have industries that make sense to be here?” he asks. “We need to develop the jobs of tomorrow that kids can get an education in high school and move into without having to go and get four-year and six-year degrees to do it. I met with BOCES and the city school district’s adult education team, and they’re tied into a lot of workforce development.” For McMahon, one target for development is the actual engagement with the issue of poverty. “We have severe poverty in our minority communities,” he admits, “When you’re looking at percentages, we’re making progress. It was 35 percent two years ago, and it’s 32 percent now. I think the community has started to wake up to this issue. We are in the human services business, so we are the government that is tasked with poverty every day. With that it seems we have moved on from the initial problem to the core of the poverty issue.” Reflecting on his several public service identities, McMahon senses a momentum in the community. “In many categories we overachieve compared to other communities our size,” he projects. “I think the partisan bickering in Albany and D.C. isn’t here right now, so we are really focused on listening and fixing our problems. We’re listening at all our town halls. We’re a community that when we have gotten knocked down, we have gotten up again and improved every day.” SNT

MEET THE

Ultimate Date Night COUPLE

George & Kathy George and Kathy Bettinger had their love story submitted by their daughter, Colleen Osborne. Having won the first Ultimate Date Night contest in 2017, Colleen wanted her parents to have a shot at making the same loving memories she and her husband did. Married for 50 years, George and Kathy have raised six children and have eight grandchildren, and are active in all of their lives. Every wrestling match, tennis match or concert, Kathy and George can be seen sitting in the stands cheering on and supporting their family members. George owns a real estate company in Chittenango and delivers parts for NAPA Auto Parts out to Penn Yan in Yates County two to three days a week, and Colleen said Kathy will regularly tag along for the nearly two-hour journey just to keep her husband company.

HOW THE CONTEST WORKED:

“They have taught me that marriage is more than a relationship, but it is the perfect balance of a partnership between two people that would sacrifice their own lives for the other while also being best friends on top of that,” Colleen said in the entry. “Having parents that are still obsessed with each other, at my age, is something rare.”.

MEET THE RUNNERS-UP

THANK YOU TO THE OTHER FINALISTS:

Ryan & Ashlee

Ryan Hannon entered the Ultimate Date Night contest without telling his wife, so it was an extra special surprise when their love story appeared among the Top 10 finalists! The pair met on the popular online dating platform E-Harmony in 2009 and struck gold immediately, with Ashlee getting matched with Ryan the first day she made a profile. Two years after meeting in person, they tied the knot. The pair now has three children together – two twin daughters and a son, whom Ashlee was pregnant with when she graduated from the St. Joseph’s College of Nursing. She now works there as a registered nursing, pulling long shifts that sometimes go for 16 hours straight. “Finding time to do things together is tough with our schedules,” Ryan said in his entry. “This would be a great gift for the love of my life!”

HAPPY

Couples submitted photos and write ups sharing their real-life happily ever after love stories. Judges at the Syracuse New Times selected the Top 10 finalists and published their submissions in the Feb. 6 issue and on the SNT Facebook page. The public, along with contestants’ families, friends and coworkers, were asked to vote by Facebook “liking” and sharing the photos and stories of their favorite couple. The couple with the highest number of “likes” (votes) was named as the winner. The runner-up couple had the second highest number of confirmed votes.
