WINNERS AT WINTERFEST

BY KIRA MADDOX Syracuse’s snowy-weather staple Winterfest once again graced the streets of downtown Syracuse this month, promising foodie fare and musical nostalgia of all kinds. But things apparently needed shaking up for the 35th year, as several newcomers took home the gold in their annual mix-offs and cooking competitions. Held from Feb. 15 to Feb. 24, Winterfest saw swarms of city residents and suburbanites head downtown to make their way through the available menus, one participating restaurant or bar at a time. More than 20 businesses showcased their best in booze and food, with the festival wrapping on Sunday with the Hammond Jammin’ XV musical event at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. The free six-hour party celebrated the history of the Hammond B-3 organ, the 400-pound instrument that used to be a fundamental part of any serious rock, soul or blues band. This was also when winners were announced and presented with their plaques. Alcoholic Mix-Offs covered martinis, cosmopolitans, margaritas, sangrias, bloody Marys and
beer. Food contests were for the Culinary Cruise (general appetizers, entrees and desserts), chili, chowder, sandwiches and chicken wings. Défi Cuisine Corp., the locally sourced bistro that opened last May at 208 W. Water St., flexed its new-kid-on-theblock status by winning first place in the Chili Cook-Off and the Wing Walk, dethroning the Syracuse Suds Factory and Otro Cinco, respectively. The PressRoom Pub proved they have the scoop on service, netting a medley of top-three wins and coming in first place in the Sandwich Stroll, beating last year’s winners Shaughnessy’s Irish Pub, and in the Beer Tasting event, held for the first time this year. PressRoom opened at 220 Herald Place last April. Other notable outcomes were Empire Brewpub, which ran away with the cosmopolitan category in both taste and presentation, beating out last year’s winners The Stoop Kitchen and Eleven Waters, and San Miguel Mexican Restaurante, proving they’re still sultans of sangria by winning for best taste and presentation for a second year. It wasn’t supposed to work out this way. The Syracuse University men’s basketball team first notched an impressive 69–49 victory against No. 18–ranked Louisville on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Carrier Dome (facing page), with plenty of excitement building for the upcoming Saturday, Feb. 23, Dome rematch with No. 1 Duke. But a Wednesday-night automotive tragedy on I-690, which involved a vehicle driven by Coach Jim Boeheim and led to the death of Jorge Jimenez, changed those priorities. Boeheim soldiered on for his team, however, as the sold-out Loud House grew quiet for a moment of silence for Jimenez. Then a stoic Boeheim hugged Duke coach — and his longtime pal — Mike Krzyzewski (lower right), before the game commenced. The Orange lost to the Blue Devils, 75–65, in what was surely the most emotionally draining game in Boeheim’s career.

GENOCIDE TO GENDER POLITICS SU Drama show recalls a shocking slaughter, while Le Moyne students offer a fun workplace musical BY JAMES MACKILLOP From a distance, Jackie Sibblies Drury’s 2012 play with the 27-word title, a Syracuse University Drama Department production running through Sunday, March 3, appears to be a drama about the horrors of imperialism. White colonial invaders slaughtered up to 80 percent of the Hereros tribe — thousands of people, more or less for the hell of it — as the first genocide of the 20th century. The playwright examines some artistic and philosophical questions: What are the ethics of making theater out of the most vicious cruelty? And can metatheater, or more broadly post-modernism, break out its distancing irony and deliver hot passion? In the name of accuracy, the full title is We Are Proud to Present a Presentation about the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, From the German Südwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915. Drury should be advised that ungainly titles discourage new productions. Arthur Kopit’s excellent black comedy, Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feeling So Sad, has been pretty much ignored for more than 50 years. At the beginning of the action, six actors troop in from a far corner door of the barest of stages. Three performers are white, three black, and everyone gets along

swimmingly, with snacking on junk food and conspicuous hugs implying shared affection. From the group emerges a spokesperson, cited in the program as Actor 6 (Brittany Adebumola), wearing an African-style turban of colorful scarves. She has to begin with a lecture. Many audience members might not be able to find Namibia on a map and are unaware that Germany once had a colonial empire. Too much exposition is generally deadly in drama, and so Drury, enhanced by director Gilbert McCauley, a newcomer specializing in black theater imported for this occasion, tries to lighten things up. This might require players to mime the outlines of neighboring countries, like Zimbabwe and South Africa. We are heading for heavy dramatic material, and this gratuitous facetiousness grows wearisome as well as needlessly diverting us. The Germans, knowing little of the vast land they were occupying, initially favored the Herero over the rival Nama, much as the Belgians had once favored the Tutsi over the Hutu in Rwanda. Things went smash after the financial losses from the failure to build a railway to the interior. The colonists began seizing land from both tribes, and when the Herero objected an “extermination order” went out. Some tribesmen were forced into indentured la-

bor while others were filled with bullets. A substantial photographic record survives, but when it comes to words about these years we have only the letters sent home by German soldiers. None of the Herero or Nama can speak, a common fate of the colonized in imperialism. Many of these are love letters addressed to Sarah (Amanda McCormick), standing for all the girls at home. This prompts black players Isaiah Brooks and Gabriel Cano-Garraway to ask in their own voices, “Are we just going to sit here and watch some white people fall in love all day?” and “Where are all the Africans?” The lighter-skinned Cano-Garraway, with spiky braids, is usually the more aggressive, while the darker Brooks is more reflective. Drury is confronting one of the conundrums of post-modernism: How much can we measure reality beyond the text? The soldiers were not reporters nor were they subverting Germany’s colonial claims. And bland or even insipid as the letters might appear, when given a close reading they do reveal telling matters in the nooks and crannies. The concept of treating the play as an artifice and having actors comment of how they feel about playing it goes back at least to Luigi Pirandello 90 years ago.
Namibia, however, seems closer to Annie Baker’s well-received Circle Mirror Transformation (2009), as the out-of-text conflicts between actors rival those of the characters in the play. A continuing question is how much performers can bring from their own experiences into the building of dramatic characters. After all, none of the players are German, and how many of us have been to Namibia? Drury’s Namibia is a drama, not a history lecture. When we don’t know, we have to project. Some of this breaking-through-thewalls effect can be amusing, even though it not may be related to our comprehending the slaughter of the Herero. A delicate little German tune gains heavier rhythm from stomping feet, which leads to an African beat and finally morphs into a rap lyric. A German soldier (Weston Barnwell) begins to pluck a banjo and another (Alex Giganti) starts to speak in an accent from one of the former states in the Confederacy. Barnwell’s white guys often speak expansively, while the round-faced Giganti gets the hotheads. Drury also has characters compare the slaughter of the Herero to the Holocaust. From this point Namibia merges with the Jim Crow South. During the time of the German colony, Americans lynched between 300 and 350 black men every year, often in a kind of celebration with families attending. Amid throbbing music, a black actor has a mask put over his face, and we prepare for an onstage execution. It’s a theatrically thrilling experience, providing substance that the perception of Namibia was not so far away, and that the United States was equally vile. But it’s not the catharsis 100 minutes of lively action led us to expect. Whereas Namibia is unusual territory for SU Drama, the acting students at Le Moyne College tackle an equally rare challenge: a musical, which hasn’t been the standard fare at the college’s Coyne Center for the Performing Arts. Dolly Parton’s bouncy 9 to 5: The Musical runs through Saturday, March 2. Under artistic director Matt Chiorini, the drama department was once characterized more by modernist masterworks like Garcia Lorca’s Blood Wedding. But given the ubiquitousness of the musical, training students in that vibrant form seems like a prudent academic idea, plus it’s also fun. To take everybody in a new direction Le Moyne has imported a New York City-based rising star, Scott Scaffidi, who has also appeared at SUNY Geneseo, to run the thing. If he thought working at Le Moyne would add luster to his resume, he
has come to the right place. Parton’s 9 to 5 was less than a smash when it opened in 2009, and is based on a 1980 movie with three female leads and a male villain. But Parton, like her character Doralee, is easily underestimated. She has mastered the whole range of musical repertory, punching out rhythms and idioms we did not know she had in her. At most there are two numbers that might be classed as country. Otherwise her heart is on Broadway, not in Nashville. The book by Patricia Resnick, who also wrote most of the original movie script, has enlarged the action so the four principals are now part of a crowd, with a male and female chorus who fill the several production numbers. These are fabulously choreographed by Scaffidi, taking full advantage of the Coyne stage, including a second level above the rest of the action. Among the most arresting is the opening title song, with workers getting dressed and ready to go. The initial theme is work itself, not just women’s roles in it. By being time-specific, back when keyboarding meant a Smith-Corona typewriter and Mad Men–style male chauvinism was unchallenged, the staging also reminds us how uncannily prescient the original movie was. The overbearing boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (Tino Laterza with splendid smarm), may fall short of contemporary predators like Harvey Weinstein or Roger Ailes, but his aggressions are more
readily staged. His petty piggery fosters his leering and condescension, like knocking a cup of pencils off his desk so that his “girl” has to get down on her hands and knees to pick them up. The musical follows the trajectory of the movie, except that characters here may seem fuller when singing their hearts out. Into the bustling offices of Consolidated Industries stumbles the shy, awkward divorcee Judy Bernly (Morgan Smith), easily flummoxed by a Xerox machine. She is taken in charge by the self-assured Violet Newstead (Megan Lees), who explains how things work in the duet, “Around Here.” Violet warns Judy against associating with the buxom blonde Doralee (Danie Merrill), thought wrongly to be sleeping with the boss. At one glance any of the three might be considered the lead, starting with Doralee and her two big production numbers, “Backwoods Barbie” and “Cowgirl’s Revenge.” Merrill’s physical evocation of Dolly, and even more the hot-trotting insouciance, will probably be the aspect of the show audiences remember most conspicuously. But Resnick and Parton did not write it that way. In a display of uncommon artistic generosity, Parton has written even bigger numbers for the other two women as well as for the traitor to her gender, Roz Keith, the office suck-up to power. Roz (Samantha Overton) would eager-
ly snitch on any office worker disloyal to Hart. Her first-act declaration of lust, “Heart to Hart,” done in gospel style with choir, is a show-stopper that ranks with the most hilarious moments of 9 to 5, of which there are many. Dangerous as she may be, any crumb of attention from the man in charge can mollify her. The role of the top woman in the office, Violet Newstead, originally belonged to Lily Tomlin but was tailored for the takecharge Allison Janney on Broadway. Taking charge is what she does with the second act’s opener, “One of the Boys,” which also pulls in the entire ensemble. Director Scaffidi adds hilarious glitz to Violet with Lindsey Quay Voorhees’ Disneyesque costumes for “Potion Notion,” a fantasy involving disposing Hart with poisons from the Brothers Grimm. In the film the naïve newcomer Judy was
played by Jane Fonda, cast wildly against type. Here Judy traverses the largest arc, from mouse to tigress, and takes over the show. As Judy, tall Morgan Smith is a graduating senior and the most experienced member of the cast. She provides variety never asked of Fonda, such as in the Warner Brothers movie spoof “Dance of Death.” She concludes the show with the most trenchant feminist declaration, “Get Out and Stay Out.” The Coyne Center may be one of most protean venues in the area, but before 9 to 5 it has never had to accommodate a pit orchestra. Music director Greg Giovanni has assembled 12 players, including two trumpets and a trombone, and has placed them behind the double-decker set. EMERGENCY BRAKE So-called political crises can lead to abuses of authority BY LUKE PARSNOW
A
n emergency room is appropriately titled. We are always there for something serious and urgent. We don’t call it a “mild illness room” or a “can wait until later room.” It’s an emergency room. We’re not in an emergency room right now, but we are in an apparent national emergency. After a two-month-long legislative battle over funds for construction of a wall on the southern border, President Donald Trump recently declared a national emergency over the matter. Trump intends to divert as much as $6.7 billion from other programs to fund a wall on the Mexican border. It’s a move that allows Trump to go around Congress — the branch of government responsible

for allocating federal spending — to fulfill his most famous campaign promise. This isn’t practical, it’s political. Despite the apocalyptic image the president paints of what goes on at the border, there is no emergency. While Trump has thrown everything at the wall in his arguments that a national emergency was necessary, he has done just as much to prove that it isn’t. The notion of a national emergency has been floated by the president since at least Jan. 5 amid a government shutdown, and since then he has gone back and forth on his position on it. He even said just six days later that he wasn’t looking into declaring a national emergency, saying on immigration, “This is something Congress should do.”

When he finally did declare one on Feb. 15, he said, “I didn’t need to do this, but I’d rather do it much faster.” Nothing says an emergency like waiting for 35 days, then asking Congress, and then when finally doing it, saying it wasn’t needed. This is not about border security. It’s not about stopping drugs or crime. And while hardly anyone denies those things to be problems, they don’t rise to the level of an emergency. Regardless, they can be classified as such by the president. And now they are. Critics of the president are waging a legal battle on this declaration, claiming it to be unconstitutional. That’s a tough argument to make, since the National Emergencies Act of 1976 is pretty clear on what authority the president has during an emergency, but is just as broad on what exactly defines an emergency. Regardless of what one may think of the border, it’s disturbing to say that the president’s decision was politically motivated. While the National Emergencies Act is a necessary statute for serious crises, it should not be used as a way for a president to fulfill an agenda that Congress didn’t approve of. That is a direct repudiation of the standard of checks and balances that this nation was founded upon. Congressional Republicans will likely go along with the president in this instance, but many have expressed concerns that this will set a new precedent for presidents going forward. If they allow a Republican president to skirt Congress to get what he wants, what’s to stop a Democratic one in the future from declaring a national emergency solely on political grounds on climate change or gun control? In New York, we’ve already seen an indication that an executive’s emergency
powers can be exploited at levels of government beyond the presidency. In the New York state Constitution, there is the provision of a “message of necessity.” Since 1938, this has given the governor the authority to waive the required three days of debate, discussion and oversight of bills so they can get rammed through the Legislature. Like the National Emergencies Act, the “message of necessity” has been incredibly abused for political convenience in recent years by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo to declare what have come to be called “midnight emergencies” on bills that clearly were not. The SAFE Act, perhaps the most controversial state law of the last decade, was classified as a “midnight emergency” and rushed into law in the dead of night in 2013 with absolutely no hearings, no testimony and no feedback from opponents and constituents. When it passed, the gun law was about as much an emergency as the southern border is now, and is just as much an example of loopholes in executive authority. The law is hardly alone. Same-sex marriage, teacher evaluations and pension reforms, among many other things, were considered midnight emergencies in Albany. Challenges to these emergencies did not hold up. Then-Attorney General Eric Schneiderman made clear Cuomo’s actions were justified because the constitution gives the governor discretion on what constitutes an emergency, the same argument Washington Republicans are now making in favor of Trump. Defining an emergency. That’s the actual emergency right now. At the very least, emergency power laws, whether they be for the president or the governor, are due for a checkup.

A
HOY Comics is what happens when two former Post-Standard colleagues, writer Hart Seely and artist Frank Cammuso, start brainstorming. “Well, me and Frank were sitting around one day,” Seely recalls, “and we were trying to figure out what the hell we were gonna do, and we just kinda said, ‘Why don’t we start a comic book company? Why don’t we have a small boutique line of comics and do what we wanna do?’ And (comics veteran writer) Tom Peyer was perfect for it. And that was that.” Seely, Cammuso and Peyer started to plan AHOY Comics in January 2017. They spent that year learning the nuts and bolts of publishing and contracts, assembling expert help, lining up the company’s first projects and hiring creators. Seely took on the publisher’s reins, with Peyer as editor-in-chief and Cammuso as chief creative officer. After a long gestation period, AHOY published its first comic, The Wrong Earth, in September 2018. It was quickly followed by three other monthly titles: the religious satire High Heaven, the bizarre anthology Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror and the outer-space antics of Captain Ginger. The company has announced a second wave of new titles:
Bronze Age Boogie and Planet of the Nerds in April, Hashtag: Danger in May and the one-shot pilot showcase Steel Cage in June. AHOY will also have the superhero issue Dragonfly and Dragonflyman available during the annual Free Comic Book Day, which takes place May 4 at area comic shops. The price for each 40-page AHOY issue line will be $3.99. Peyer notes that he took a cue from the old Gold Key Comics line of the early 1960s, with a reprint of the front cover on the back, sans logos and subheads. The stories even have page numbers, another old-school touch. AHOY is an acronym standing for Abundance, Humor, Originality and Yes!, although longtime local fans of the former AHOY award bestowed each year by Peyer and Seely on an undeserving national figure will know another phrase for the acronym. Yet the AHOY honchos figure the time is ripe for a start-up comics company that offers unique storytelling, quality printing and unorthodox humor. “As editor-in-chief, it’s my job to make sure the comics are good in a way that I want comics to be good, and to make sure they come out on time,” Peyer notes. “I always say, ‘My job is if anyone tries to kill the comic book, it’s up to me to kill them.”

We have a phrase we like to meditate on: “Smart, good-looking and funny.” One of your heroes, Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee, said that when he started out people would ask him what he did, to which he responded with “I’m a writer.” And when they asked “What do you write for” and he told them, they’d walk away. Are people still walking away? Tom Peyer: No, they’re not. I am really
full of admiration for people who worked for comics in the 1950s. They were maligned, they were badly paid, they didn’t own any of their work, and yet they still did amazing work and pushed the medium forward. To me, they’re martyrs. And Stan Lee is one of the reasons we don’t have to be martyrs anymore, because he started writer comics that older people could enjoy. And he was such as great pitchman with this amazing reputation as an important media figure, and that helped everybody. Frank Cammuso: No, when people ask me what I do and they find out I’m a cartoonist, they actually get excited. I think they find it very interesting; they ask where I draw comics for, or where they can find them. Comics aren’t the dirty little secret they used to be. Hart Seely: No, not at all. In fact, comic books have achieved an amazing prominence in American culture these days. The simple fact that there are comic book conventions all across the country is an amazing evolution. And the subculture of comic books is incredible, In the 1950s and 1960s when all of this was building, comic books did have a reputation for being simplistic and such. Nowadays they are the cutting edge of movies with the CGI (special effects) that is in every movie about a comic book hero. If they put out a superhero movie these days, it’s a $100 million breakout blockbuster. Nobody does a comic book movie on the cheap anymore. Comic books are huge.
Stan Lee pointed to energy as being a major factor in the change. Tom: I don’t know if he was referring
to energy from the audience, but that is a great thing from the readership, and again, he really helped that whole situation. I was a kid when Stan’s comics were coming out. We were all on a firstname basis: He was Stan and he had this wonderful disc jockey patter in the letters

pages and in the text pages he wrote. He made it feel like he was our pal. So there’s a great back and forth with the readership, and he’s one of the reasons why.
You have made the point that you don’t worry about the kids, you worry about the parents. Should there be limits on access to comics based on age? And what would you call it: an adult comic book? What do you call it? Tom: Well, families differ from each
other. Some families are open to a wider range of materials than others that they would approve of letting their kids see. What we, and most comic companies do now, is if something is really intended for adults, we label it “Mature.” Generally, most comics break down into all-age books, teen books and mature books, so there is a rating system in place, and we follow that format. Frank: I think there are limits, but since comics are visual you can really tell. A certain art style, more cartoon-esque, will appeal to younger kids, whereas older kids will probably go for a more realistic art style, and that’s really how a lot of visual literature is disseminated. If you have a certain look to your work, you’ll be in a certain age group. My work skews what you call “Early Grade” and “Early Reader” and that really is a good way to tell. For example; young kids love Mickey Mouse, whereas an older kid would be more drawn to Batman. And that’s as much as I’d differentiate an adult comic from a kid’s comic. Hart: We have had different targets for each of our books. The Wrong Earth is a send-up of comics, and Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror is a send-up on a great American writer. They definitely go for the adult audience. High Heaven goes after the Catholic church and it’s a send-up on religion. Those comics are shooting for a certain demographic. But Captain Ginger, the book about cats in space, is all ages. We don’t have any swearing in there or anything that would be offensive to kids, so we’re going for the old-style comic book market there.
Are they still considered “funny books”? Hart: Yes, that is our goal with every
one of our books. We’re trying to use humor. It’s what Peyer does best, it’s what I

know Cammuso does best, and it’s what I think I do best. We have simply tried to feel as though we can touch any subject and breach any social taboos as long as we are funny while we do it.
What would you say your content is? Tom: I think that’s a big question. It’s
something an adult could read and get a kick out of. We are going to be doing comics for children at some point, but I would say what we have isn’t really it. Actually, we have a phrase we like to meditate on: “Smart, good-looking and funny.” There’s a range of art and writing styles that are a good fit for AHOY. The comics are not all the same, they don’t feel the same, but they’re all kinda funny. And I think they’re smart and good-looking, too.
There seems to be significant stereo-
types associated with comic books as a whole. How do you feel about that? Tom: I guess there is a stereotype, but
when I hear the word stereotype I think of the way comic book readers are stereotyped, like on The Big Bang Theory sitcom. Personally, it’s not something I give a lot of thought to it because I’ve reached an age where I honestly don’t care what strangers think of me, but I think the stereotypes of comics has changed. In the old days, the 1950s and 1960s, the stereotype was that if an adult is reading a comic book, that adult must be stupid. Now the stereotype is they must be geeky, nerdy, brainiacs, which is very different.

bunch of pages with action.” Is this a stereotype of the art form? Tom: Yeah, that would have been Mar-
tin Goodman, his boss who owned the company. And that was a pretty smart way to do comics, because the pages are still and you need to keep the action going, which I try to keep things moving. There are limits to how many words you want in a panel because who wants to plow through all those words when you’re reading a comic book? So, if you ask me, he wasn’t entirely wrong. Frank: That’s not so much the nature of my work because I specifically do comics for kids. The words are of a certain reading level. I like where I’m at, which is “Middle Grade” which is grades 9 to 12, and the kids can grasp some deeper concepts at that point. It’s a fun age group. Hart: There is always a need for action
in a comic book. In comic books, they’re like the movie, just without the budget, OK? You can imagine anything and have an artist draw it. It could be a machine that stretches from earth to the next panel, it could be anything in the world. You are not limited by budget at all with comic books, you can do anything you want. Along those lines, there’s no sense in just having one face in one panel speaking, and having another character speaking. You do need action. A long time ago, comics were seen as the low end of the intellectual spectrum; that was always the way it was in the 1940s and 1950s. Today we have great writers. The Walking Dead started out as a comic, and now it’s one of the biggest shows on television.
What would you say your style is?

Frank: Fairly humorous, it’s a kind of
humorous, friendly open style. People say I have a lot of action in my work, which I like. I like mythology-type stories, I like adventure tales, things like that. Hart: To be honest, I don’t think we’ve been around long enough for us to claim a style.
Where did it all start for you? Frank: It started by drawing comics,
and seeing comics. Watching things like Popeye, reading the Peanuts comic strip, and drawing cartoons at the local newspaper. But the best advice (to budding cartoonists) I can give is just draw! Tom: Well, I’ve been doing this a long time. Before I got into comic books, I was a cartoonist at the Syracuse New Times for 12 years. Before that I was
learning to draw and I really wanted to be a cartoonist. I would volunteer and do spot illustrations for a peace group or some sort of alternative paper. What I remember is getting you, Walt Shepperd, to publish some of my drawings, but there was an obstacle: I didn’t own any good pens. So you bought me some drawing pens to use, and that’s when I started drawing for publication.
Where is it heading? Hart: Well, that’s an interesting ques-
tion. I didn’t see us becoming a giant company. I want us to be known as a small company that puts out three to four comics at a time, but they were really good comics, and that’s all we need.
What’s the best thing you ever did? Tom: The best thing I ever did? I hope I haven’t done it yet.
