Though unsettling, this Donald Duck cover from Feb. 18, 1971, was actually about something not of nightmares: “Disney on Parade” coming to the War Memorial. The show would combine film animation and stage performance for a night of magical entertainment.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19) Climbing moun-

tains has been a popular adventure since the 19th century, but there are still many peaks around the world that no one has ever ascended. They include the 24,591-foot-high Muchu Chhish in Pakistan, 23,691-foot Karjiang South in Tibet, and 12,600-foot Sauyr Zhotasy on the border of China and Kazakhstan. If there are any Aries mountaineers reading this horoscope who have been dreaming about conquering an unclimbed peak, 2019 will be a great time to do it, and now would be a perfect moment to plan or launch your quest. As for the rest of you Aries, what’s your personal equivalent of reaching the top of an unclimbed peak?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Eminem’s song

“Lose Yourself” was a featured track in the movie 8 Mile, and it won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003. The creator himself was not present at the Oscar ceremony to accept his award, however. He was so convinced his song would lose that he stayed home. At the moment that presenter Barbra Streisand announced Eminem’s triumph, he was asleep in front of the TV with his daughter, who was watching cartoons. In contrast to him, I hope you will be fully available and on the scene for the recognition or acknowledgment that should be coming your way sometime soon.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) While enjoying its

leisure time, the peregrine falcon glides around at 50 miles per hour. But when it’s motivated by the desire to eat, it may swoop and dart at a velocity of 220 miles per hour. Amazing! In accordance with your astrological omens, Gemini, I propose that we make the peregrine falcon your spirit creature for the next three weeks. I suspect you will have extraordinary speed and agility and focus whenever you’re hunting for exactly what you want. So here’s a crucial question: What exactly do you want?

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Now and then

the sun shines and rain falls at the same time. The meteorological name for the phenomenon is “sunshower,” but folklore provides other terms. Hawaiians may call it “liquid sunshine” or “ghost rain.” Speakers of the Tangkhul language in India imagine it as “the wedding of a human and spirit.” Some Russians refer to it as “mushroom rain,” since it’s thought to encourage the growth of mushrooms. Whatever you might prefer to call it, Cancerian, I suspect that the foreseeable future will bring you delightful paradoxes in a similar vein. And in my opinion, that will be very lucky for you, since you’ll be in the right frame of mind and spirit to thrive amid just such situations.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A study by the Fidelity

financial services company revealed that in 43 percent of all couples, neither partner has an accurate knowledge of how much money the other partner earns. Meanwhile, research by the National Institute of Health concludes that among heterosexual couples, 36 percent of husbands misperceive how frequently their wives have orgasms. I bring this to your attention in order to sharpen your focus on how crucial it is to communicate clearly with your closest allies. I mean, it’s rarely a good idea to be ignorant about what’s going on with those close to you, but it’ll be an especially bad idea during the next six weeks.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Torre Mayor is one

of the tallest skyscrapers in Mexico City. When workers finished its construction in 2003, it was one of the world’s most earthquake-proof buildings, designed to hold steady during an 8.5-level temblor. Over the course of 2019, Virgo, I’d love to see you erect the metaphorical equivalent of that unshakable structure in your own life. The astrological omens suggest that doing so is quite possible. And the coming weeks will be an excellent time to launch that project or intensify your efforts to manifest it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Multitalented Libran singer and actor Donald Glover uses the name

BY ROB BREZSNY of Childish Gambino when he performs his music. How did he select that alias? He used an online random name generator created by the rap group Wu-Tang Clan. I tried the same generator and got “Fearless Warlock” as my new moniker. You might want to try it yourself, Libra. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to add layers to your identity and expand your persona and mutate your self-image. The generator is here: tinyurl.com/yournewname. (P.S.: If you don’t like the first one you’re offered, keep trying until you get one you like.)

Gift Certificates this Valentines Day, the Perfect Fit!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Leonardo da

Vinci’s painting “Salvator Mundi” sold for $450 million in 2017. Just 12 years earlier, an art collector had bought it for $10,000. Why did its value increase so extravagantly? Because in 2005, no one was sure it was an authentic da Vinci painting. It was damaged and had been covered with other layers of paint that hid the original image. After extensive efforts at restoration, the truth about it emerged. I foresee the possibility of a comparable, if less dramatic, development in your life during the next 10 months, Scorpio. Your work to rehabilitate or renovate an underestimated resource could bring big dividends.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) There are two

kinds of minor, boring little tasks. One is when you’re attending to a detail that’s not in service to a higher purpose; the other is when you’re attending to a detail that is a crucial step in the process of fulfilling an important goal. An example of the first might be when you try in vain to scour a permanent stain on a part of the kitchen counter that no one ever sees. An example of the second is when you download an update for an existing piece of software so your computer works better and you can raise your efficiency levels as you pursue a pet project. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to keep this distinction in mind as you focus on the minor, boring little tasks that are crucial steps in the process of eventually fulfilling an important goal.

According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you will be able to see more than you usually do. The world will seem brighter and deeper and more vivid. your own head? Not many people can. It requires great flexibility. Before comedian Robin Williams was famous, he spontaneously did just that when he auditioned for the role of the extraterrestrial immigrant Mork, the hero of the TV sitcom Mork and Mindy. The casting director was impressed with Williams’ odd but amusing gesture, and hired him immediately. Let me add a few corollaries. First, stave off any temptation you might have to believe that others know what’s good for you better than you do. Second, figure out what everyone thinks of you and aggressively liberate yourself from their opinions. Third, if anyone even hints at not giving you the respect you deserve, banish them for at least three weeks.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION

Several of Ryk Edelstein’s friends in Montreal, Canada, had their requests for vanity license plates turned down for being “offensive.” “I found it mind-boggling that innocent-sounding family names or place names were being rejected,” Edelstein told the Montreal Gazette. So he decided to order his own vanity plate, requesting the word SMEGMA, which he was certain the Societe de l’assurance automobile du Quebec (SAAQ), which issues the plates, would check, “and in a million years it would never be approved.” But it took SAAQ fewer than 24 hours to approve the request and issue its congratulations to Edelstein, who now sports the plate on his car. He reports that his wife thought it was funny at first, but now she is “none too pleased about this plate.”

TUBER STAKES

Retirees Marli and Paulo Ciquinel of Meleiro in southern Brazil discovered a fetishist’s dream in the vegetable garden behind their home: a 17 1/2-pound potato that had grown into the shape of a huge human foot (with six toes). The “toes” descend in size, much as human toes do, and the largest has roots that look like hair. The “foot” portion of the tuber reaches up almost to knee-height. Marli told The Mirror, “We have never seen anything like it.” Paulo said he was “a little bit scared when we harvested that potato.” The couple doesn’t plan to eat it.

GARDEN PARTY

A pothole in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, got a new life as a vegetable garden last summer after area residents grew weary of waiting for the city to repair it. The hole, which is several feet deep, had been expanding for months, neighbors said. So they filled it with tomato plants, which ripened and got so tall they required wire cages for support. Now, “It’s sort of, like, become the community garden,” resident Bryan Link told CBC Radio. Finally, Mayor John Tory has agreed to not only fill the pothole, but to move the tomato plants to a community garden.

CURSES, FOILED AGAIN

As his trial got underway on Aug. 22, Chinese University of Hong Kong associate professor Khaw Kim-sun pleaded not guilty to a breathtaking murder plot. Prosecutors say that in 2015, Khaw filled a yoga ball with carbon monoxide, then left it in the trunk of his wife’s car, where it slowly leaked the noxious gas and killed his wife and their 16-year-old daughter. The BBC reported that Khaw was angry because his wife wouldn’t di-

WHAT’S OPERA, DOC?

After 16 years, neighbors of “Eva N.” in Sturovo, Slovakia, have gotten relief from her particular brand of torment, reported the BBC. From morning until night, the woman had played a four-minute aria from Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata over and over, with her speakers on full blast. “The whole street is suffering,” complained one resident. At first, the music-lover played the music to drown out a neighbor’s barking dog, but continued the practice until Aug. 6, when she was arrested for harassment and malicious persecution. If found guilty, she could face between six months and three years in prison.

vorce him so that he could be with a student with whom he was having an affair. When colleagues caught Khaw filling the ball, he said he was going to use it to kill rabbits, but in his statement to police, he said the gas was to kill rats in his home. He was convicted of two counts of murder in September and sentenced to life imprisonment.

FOOD FIGHT

Jeffrey Tomerlin, 45, was charged with assault on Aug. 19 after he hurled a soft, fluffy, edible weapon at his ex-girlfriend. When Tomerlin saw his ex in a car with her new boyfriend, he walked up to her window and threw a biscuit at her face. He also charged the car, banging on it and saying he would kill them, reported WKRN, earning additional charges of public intoxication and vandalism. It was not clear whether the biscuit damaged the ex-girlfriend’s face.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

On Aug. 20, The Miami Herald endorsed Republican Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, who was running to replace Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen to represent Jen Sorensen

a district that includes parts of Miami and Miami Beach. (She lost her primary bid on Aug. 28.) Rodriguez Aguilera has been a city official and a business executive, the Herald noted, but conceded, “We realize that Rodriguez Aguilera is an unusual candidate.” Before she was a candidate, Rodriguez Aguilera appeared on Spanish-language television programs to talk about her experience of being abducted by aliens when she was 7 years old. Three beings, two women and a man who reminded her of Jesus Christ, spoke to her “telepathically” and took her aboard their spaceship. Inside, she saw “round seats that were there, and some quartz rocks that controlled the ship,” and she said she has communicated with them several times since then. However, editorial page editor Nancy Ancrum didn’t think Rodriguez Aguilera’s beliefs or past experiences compromised her as an effective public servant. “Here’s why we chose her: She’s not crazy,” Ancrum told The Washington Post. “I don’t think we went off the rails here.”

SMOKE SIGNALS

Mohamad Zayid Abdihdy, 24, declared that he’s “going back to a hookah” after a fiery incident on Aug. 25 involving his e-cigarette. The cellphone store worker was in an HDTV Outlet store in Anaheim, California, buying a new television when the smoking device exploded in his pants pocket. “The gentleman, he is running, and he is screaming and yelling,” store manager Antelmolare Guzman told NBC4. “Apparently, all of his right leg was completely burnt all the way down. Part of his private parts were also kind of affected.” While Abdihdy ran to the restroom to see to his burns, Guzman put out the still-flaming e-cig on the store’s floor. Abdihdy, who did not go to the hospital, said he still can’t walk on his leg.

NEW WORLD ORDER

Kimberel Eventide, 36, believes her purpose here on Earth is to help other humans become elves, just like herself. A resident of Illinois, Eventide identifies as a Pleiadian Starseed, an Otherkin who first realized she was an elf after reading and watching the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien. She spends her time dressing as an elf in silk, velvet or

nature-inspired clothing and pointed elf ears — but she doesn’t wear them all the time because “my own ears have a slight point to them.” Eventide’s husband supports her elfdom but “he does not understand it and does not watch many of my videos,” she said. “I am an Elven spiritual teacher who offers personal Skype online sessions to help individual souls,” she explained to the Daily Mail. Her mission, called “Projectelvenstar,” is specifically to help humans transform themselves into High Elves — “ears are optional but can become a byproduct of becoming extrasensory and hearing better over time.”

OVERREACTION

Bryan Tucker of Sandston, Virginia, was fed up with kids littering his lawn as they waited at the Henrico County school bus stop adjacent to his property. So on Sept. 4, he installed a battery-powered electric fence. “They don’t respect other people’s land,” Tucker told WTVR-TV. “I pick up trash every day.” Officials informed him later that day that the fence was placed on county property, not his own, so Tucker took it down. But he still thinks the point was made: “The message has gotten across,” Tucker said. “Parents are posting and talking about it.”

GAME OVER

Pavel Matveev, 15, of Mogochino village in the Tomsk region of Russia, apparently despairing of having lost a video game, was found in his yard Sept. 4 after committing suicide by decapitating himself with a chain saw. According to the Daily Mail, Russian media reported

the teen’s single mother had bought him a computer, at which he “spent hours,” said one unnamed source. “This is what killed him.”

SMOOTH REACTION

A naked man opened the door to firefighters responding to a house fire in Niceville, Florida, on Aug. 27 and said “I’m sorry” before closing the door in their faces. James Cunningham, 53, later admitted to police he’d had two liters of vodka and had smoked marijuana before trying to bake cookies on his George Foreman grill, reported WPLG Local 10. The experiment went wrong when the grill and cookies caught fire, so he covered them with a dry towel, which also caught fire. Firefighters said if he’d been in the house any longer, he could have died from smoke inhalation.

OOPS!

New Jersey resident Gregory Lazarchick, 56, made a bad day worse on July 21 when he told greeters at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, he’d been sent by al-Qaida to “blow the place up.” According to The Orlando Sentinel, the greeters told Orange County deputies Lazarchick complained of having a bad day before issuing his threat, but deputies found no bomb-making materials in Lazarchick’s hotel room. The man’s sister reported he had suffered a head injury several years ago and sometimes said inappropriate things. The remorseful Lazarchick posted bond after his arrest for false report of a bombing.

OUT TO LUNCH

Knox County (Kentucky) Sheriff’s deputies responded on Aug. 24 to a home in Corbin, where Kenneth Ray Couch, 35, had reportedly stolen a handgun. As they searched for Couch, they learned he had been transported to the hospital in an ambulance after staging a heart attack at nearby Dixon’s market. When police arrived at Baptist Health Corbin, WYMT reported, they found Couch in the cafeteria, which had apparently been his goal all along. Couch was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and falsely reporting an incident.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINAL

Taiheem M. McKay, 23, of Riverhead, New York, made it easy for Suffolk County officials to track him down after suspecting him of breaking into 10 different homes over the course of seven months, stealing cash, jewelry and designer accessories. According to Newsday, the Suffolk County Department of Probation traced McKay to the burglary locations through his GPS ankle monitor, which he was wearing as a result of a February 2017 second-degree reckless endangerment conviction. McKay has additional pending indictments in other burglaries.

their thang,” as Mitchell described it. The Smoking Gun reported that when Port St. Lucie police officer Clayton Baldwin approached Mitchell’s car around 11:30 p.m., after the park had closed, Mitchell told him the kids “aren’t out there stealing, they are just having sex. They could be out there doing worse.” When the teenagers returned from the nearby soccer field, Mitchell’s son told the officer they were “just smokin’ and f---in’.” Mitchell was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a misdemeanor.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES

In what the Porter County (Indiana) coroner later called “a blatant disregard for human life,” two men posted a video of themselves “horseplaying” with a third man, 21-year-old Kyle Kearby, who was slumped over, suffering from an apparent drug overdose, on Sept. 9. The video shows one man tying cords to Kearby’s hands and manipulating his arms like a puppet, and the other pumping Kearby’s chest and moving his mouth while singing “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” Kearby’s father told The Times his son returned home about 5:30 a.m. and went to bed, but later discovered him not breathing and covered with vomit. He died at a hospital. Porter County Sheriff Dave Reynolds said he does not suspect foul play.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (left), shown here as he snarfs down a sausage sandwich during the 2018 New York State Fair, wants to muck with mug shots. Michael Davis photo

THINGS THAT MATTER

ANDREW CUOMO, SECRET AGENT

In his latest brainstorm, the guv wants to hide criminals’ mug shots from the news media

N

BY LUKE PARSNOW ews about crime is very much the focal point of modern-day journalism, especially in local newsrooms. The public has long accepted this, despite most of those stories having absolutely no relevance to their lives. But when they are relevant, that’s when people depend on newsrooms most to tell them who is responsible and for what. That’s what Gov. Andrew Cuomo now apparently wants to take away. In his 2020 executive budget, the governor has proposed banning the public disclosure of “mug shots” and “booking information” compiled by law enforcement agencies whenever they make arrests. Such a change would require amending New York’s Freedom of Information Law.

6

Cuomo believes that releasing a person’s arrest photo or other booking information to news media, as is current general practice, would constitute an “unwanted invasion of personal privacy.” The only thing more ridiculous than this proposal is Cuomo’s motivation behind it. The intent is to curb illegitimate “news” websites from posting a suspect’s information and mug shot and then charging that suspect hundreds of dollars to take them down. Now it’s not like that in itself isn’t a major problem. It certainly is. But there must be better measures that can take this issue directly to the websites instead of a foolish outright ban on information that the public is entitled to know. If the back door of your house is broken, you don’t go buy a new house.

02.6.19 - 02.12.19 | syracusenew times.com

Again, that man who was arrested for having cocaine at his home isn’t likely to impact you that much — unless that man turned out to be the principal of the school your kids go to. Cuomo’s proposal could prevent us from knowing that the man who lives next door is a sex offender; that the woman who cuts our hair defrauded her customers; that our bus driver was driving drunk; that our mayor stole money from the treasury; or even that our own brother-in-law who babysits our children was recently arrested for domestic abuse. The governor’s allies argue that this isn’t a “ban” and that police agencies would have a great deal of discretion on what gets released to the public. That’s even worse: Instead of full disclosure, we get selective disclosure. Police can choose what information we should know. Do you think they would choose to release the name of a suspect if it was a police officer who was arrested? And worse yet, such secrecy could lead to excuses not to release information on our political leaders accused of wrongdoing. Gov. Cuomo’s life would have been a lot easier if he didn’t have to answer questions about the arrests of state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, to say nothing about Joe Percoco, his for-

mer top aide he likened to a brother who was charged and convicted in a bribery scheme. This is not just about the safety of the public, either, but also the accused. Withholding arrests and mug shots could prevent any potential witnesses from coming forward with evidence or testimony proving a suspect’s innocence. And if a suspect was mistreated by law enforcement, like being interrogated or coerced into admitting to something they didn’t do, would we ever find out about that? Cuomo and his office claim this extreme measure is the only effective way to go after these websites that exploit crime news to make money. “Passing legislation that prohibits websites from charging fees for removing photos has been tried by 15 other states and is not working — mug shots keep popping up online,” Cuomo spokesman Jason Conwall recently told reporters. True as that may be, eliminating such a known level of transparency — the purpose of which is to inform and protect the public — is hardly a good alternative. Try something else, Gov. Cuomo. It’s a terrible solution to a problem that, in turn, would just cause another problem.

the Smallest Showon Earth WINTER FAIR, A MINI-VERSION OF THE NEW YORK STATE FAIR, PREMIERES AT THE EXPOSITION CENTER

A

8

BY KIRA MADDOX

s a Polar Vortex plummeted temperatures into the negative double-digits across Central New York last week, many have been contemplating about warmer days on the horizon. That’s when Syracuse’s annual festival season kicks off, with its crown jewel being the New York State Fair. A new venture could give residents a teaser of what’s to come. Winter Fair, a miniaturized version of the State Fair, will be open for business Friday, Feb. 8, through Sunday, Feb. 10, inside the Exposition Center at the west end of the fairgrounds. Winter Fair became a topic of discussion for the 110,000-square-foot venue almost as soon as it was completed last summer. The Expo Center is one of the largest of its type between Cleveland and Boston, outside of New York City venues. Whereas the summer fair sprawls across the fairgrounds, the Expo Center still has ample space to work with. 02.6.19 - 02.12.19 | syracusenew times.com

“This is something that came to me and we said, let’s give it a try. And it looks like we hit a nerve,” said Steve Becker of Premier Promotions, which is mounting Winter Fair. “It’s something for the family to come out and enjoy together.” The event aims to compress all the nostalgic joys of the New York State Fair into one indoor space. The midwinter bash also creates a way to continue Syracuse’s buzzing festival mentality into the offseason, Becker said, as the annual summertime lineup features mainstays including Taste of Syracuse, Arts Week and Blues Fest. “I’ve been a part of this community for many years, and the highlight for me every year is the New York State Fair,” Becker said. “And it’s expanding every year; there’s so much to see. We want to capture some of that.” Winter Fair’s wow factor will begin when visitors walk into the Expo Center (which is 90 feet tall) to see a towering, opera-

on hand. Snowmen made by area youth groups will be outside the Expo Center as part of a contest, where fairgoers can vote on their favorites. Each child on the winning team will receive a $100 savings bond, Becker said. There will also be chances to win tickets to the New York State Fair and other prizes during a basketball-shooting game, where proceeds will be donated to the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, earmarked for the Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse. Worried about carrying around a jacket? Use the inexpensive on-site coat check, with proceeds to be donated to the local chapter of the NAACP, Becker said. This will be Winter Fair’s inaugural year, but Becker is already planning on expanding the concept for later editions. Perhaps Premier can take over a few more nearby buildings in years to come, or beef up the outdoor attractions to take advantage of the snow. “It’s really a reflection of our community,” Becker noted. “People go to the State Fair and remember that it’s a lot of fun, so we want to see that with Winter Fair, too.” From left, rides on a slide, juggling antics from Hilby and Native American dancing will be some of the attractions at this weekend’s Winter Fair. Michael Davis photos

tional Ferris wheel twirling around in the background. There will be about a dozen rides lined up for a “mini-Midway,” with the classic merry-go-round, Tilt-A-Whirl, giant slide and more, Becker said. Each ride costs $3, with an all-access pass available for $15. Aside from rides and games, one of the State Fair’s biggest draws is the food. Will Winter Fair live up to those gustatory standards? “We’re planning to have a nice cross-section of food,” Becker said, “so people will say, ‘Wow, this feels like the fair!’” Those accustomed to seeking the A-frame peaked roof of Paradise Companies’ Villa Pizze Fritte as soon as they hit the fairgrounds won’t be disappointed. The Villa is booked for this weekend, serving up its doughy fritte favorite along with ice cream. Peppino’s, Bosco’s, Limp Lizard and others will handle various State Fair treats like sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza. Nearly 30 food vendors are slated for Winter Fair, serving up State Fair fare and newer taste treats. Menu options can be found on the Winter Fair website: nyswinterfair.com. The summertime State Fair also places

an emphasis on inclusivity with the Van Robinson Pan-African Village and Indian Village. And in a music-loving city like Syracuse, no festival is complete without live shows. Where will those fit into Winter Fair? They’ll all be there, Becker assures, with both villages being present, and a lineup that will include Native American dancers, a martial arts demonstration and more. Central New York musicians such as Jess Novak, Joe Driscoll, Paul Davie and the Custom Taylor Band will take the stage throughout Winter Fair. Even Hilby, “the skinny German juggling boy,” will be roaming around the Expo Center on stilts or juggling on his unicycle, just as he does in the summertime. Local crafters and artisans will also get a spot at the table. Bruce Block’s City Market, normally held during the spring and summer months at downtown’s Everson Museum Plaza, will set up at Winter Fair, with more than 18 crafters ready to sell their locally made goods. “It’ll definitely have a Central New York feel to it,” Becker said of Winter Fair. The iconic sand sculpture will not make an appearance, but Becker said that a professionally created ice sculpture will be

NAUGHTY BUT NICE Maria Muldaur’s bawdy tribute to blues singer Blue Lu Barker earns a Grammy nomination BY RUSS TARBY

Maria Muldaur, the jug-band chanteuse who scored a surprise pop hit with 1973’s “Midnight at the Oasis,” released her 41st album last September, a 13-track disc that pays overdue homage to the late New Orleans–born singer Blue Lu Barker. More good news for both Maria and Blue Lu: Don’t You Feel My Leg: The Naughty Bawdy Blues of Blue Lu Barker has been nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Born Louisa Dupont in New Orleans, Louisiana, Blue Lu married guitarist Danny Barker in the late-1920s when she was still a teenager, and they both worked as entertainers in Harlem.

After a decade of marriage, Blue Lu wrote a slightly suggestive tune and Danny put the words to music. She sang, “Don’t you feel my leg ’cause if you feel my leg you’re gonna feel my thigh, and if you feel my thigh, you’re gonna go up high.” Such candid lyrics were somewhat shocking in the 1930s, but the blues tradition had always been rife with ribaldry. So-called “dirty blues” ditties date back to Buddy Bolden’s “If You Don’t Shake It, You Get No Cake” circa 1900, Tampa Red’s “It’s Tight Like That” from 1928, and Blue Lu’s Manhattan-based contemporary, Lucille Bogan waxed the unforgettably explicit “Shave ’Em Dry” in 1935.

Blue Lu Barker, accompanied by Danny Barker’s Fly Cats, first recorded the song under the title, “Don’t You Make Me High,” on Aug. 11, 1938, according to Decca Records archives. Produced by Arkansas-born blues songster J. Mayo Williams, “Don’t You Make Me High” became a national hit, opening the door for Blue Lu to make appearances with Cab Calloway and Jelly Roll Morton. Thirty-five years after it was first waxed, Maria Muldaur, then a 29-yearold veteran of the Even Dozen and Jim Kweskin jug bands, brought the song back to life when Mac Rebennack (a.k.a. Dr. John) suggested she record it for her first solo album for Reprise in 1973. A terrific trio, with Rebennack on guitars and piano, Klaus Voorman on bass and Jim Keltner on drums, laid down the track, which ended up as the first song on side two of Muldaur’s self-titled LP. While “Midnight at the Oasis” became a Top 10 smash single, “Don’t You Feel My Leg” remains one of the most requested songs over Muldaur’s impressive 50-year career in American roots music. “‘Don’t You Feel My Leg’ was considered quite risqué in its day,” Muldaur observed. “But compared to the overamped, kinetic, frenetic, bumpin’, grindin’, booty-shakin’, in-your-face, X-rated explicit lyrics that prevail in today’s music, I find its playful, sly, tongue-incheek innuendo to actually be a much sexier approach. Imagination is always the best aphrodisiac.” In the late-1980s, Maria and Blue Lu formed a friendship that lasted until Blue Lu’s death in 1998. In 2016, Muldaur was invited to New Orleans to perform a tribute to her old friend. While researching material for the tribute, she was surprised to discover that the Barkers had written and recorded dozens of songs equally bawdy, witty and clever as “Don’t You Feel My Leg.” “I put together a wonderful ‘all-star’ band of stellar New Orleans players, and we had a blast performing this fun material to a sold-out audience,” Muldaur recalled. “The response was overwhelming, and after the show people swarmed up to the CD table all clamoring to buy a CD of the sassy, naughty, bawdy material they had just heard. At that moment we all realized that this delightful collection of songs needed to be recorded and shared with the world.” The disc features prominent New Orleans musicians such as pianist David Torkanowsky, bassist Roland Guerin, drummer Herlin Riley, guitarist Chris Adkins, trumpeters Kevin Louis and Duke Heitger, reedman Tom Fischer and trombonist Eric Trolsen. For an extra au-

thentic touch, guitarist Steve Masakowski loaned out Danny Barker’s guitar for use on the sessions. As a result, Don’t You Feel My Leg remains true to the spirit and soul of New Orleans and Blue Lu’s material. Most of the Barkers’ blues were recorded in New York City in the late 1930s and early 1940s with some of the finest jazz players on the NYC scene, such as trumpeter Henry “Red” Allen. While the lyrics made her chuckle, Muldaur found herself mesmerized by Blue Lu’s delicate, high-pitched vocals. “Besides the wonderfully funny, suggestive lyrics, I was really struck and quite charmed by Blue Lu’s delivery of these tunes,” Muldaur said. “Her singing is droll, sly, full of sass and attitude, yet understated, a bit girlish and coy. Her cool nonchalance and crisp ladylike diction in contrast to the naughty lyrics made them smolder with innuendo all the more. These were songs by hipsters, for hipsters.” The new disc’s baker’s dozen tracks include “Georgia Grind,” “Loan Me Your Husband,” “Scat Skunk,” “Nix on Those Lush Heads,” “Bow Legged Daddy,” “Trombone Man Blues,” “Handy Andy,” “Never Brag About Your Man” and, of course, “Don’t You Feel My Leg,” which clocks in here at four minutes and 20 seconds. “These are all basically hip, fun happy songs,” she said, “and I think we could all use a big dose of happy right about now.” Blue Lu’s biggest hit, “A Little Bird Told Me,” also graces the Grammy-nominated CD. “A Little Bird Told Me” was released by Capitol Records in 1948, reaching the Billboard chart on Dec. 18, 1948, where it remained for 14 weeks, peaking at number 4. The Barkers moved back to New Orleans in 1966, where Danny led the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, which was pivotal in producing generations of new talent, including Wynton Marsalis, Leroy Jones, Tuba Fats and Lucien Barbarin. Blue Lu was inducted into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame in 1997, three years after Danny’s death and one year before she passed in New Orleans, at age 84. CBS will air the 61st Grammy Awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 10, 8 p.m., on WTVH-Channel 5. And it’s a good bet that Muldaur will perform “Don’t You Feel My Leg” during her July 18 concert at the Clayton Opera House, 403 Riverside Drive, Clayton. Tickets are $20, $25 and $30. Works by Rob Glisson, Karen Jean Smith and Adriana Meiss are featured at Edgewood Gallery.

ART

FROM CERAMICS TO COWS

Four artists display their unique works at Edgewood Gallery

T

BY CARL MELLOR

he Edgewood Gallery’s current show, Nature of Things, offers landscape paintings depicting scenes from Cape Cod and upstate New York, flowers by a house and, yes, lots of cows. It also presents ceramics suggesting wood surfaces and jewelry by an artist who makes necklaces, pendants and earrings. Most importantly, even though Edgewood is a small venue, the show offers a full selection of works by all four artists. For starters, the exhibition provides exposure for Rob Glisson’s oil paintings. He doesn’t do straight-up figuration, preferring instead to interpret landscapes by emphasizing colors or one aspect of a subject. He often seeks to communicate an emotion or mood. His painting of an outdoor scene in winter captures snow sticking to a tree, covering a shed, sweeping across the ground. Among other things, the work projects solitude. “Late Day Light on Water,” meanwhile, takes a different approach as it portrays a scene in a harbor. There’s one boat with a wispy sail, a second boat with a mast, and then boats in the distance whose presence is marked only by their masts. The painting influences viewers

12

02.6.19 - 02.12.19 | syracusenew times.com

to speculate about what’s happening in the painting’s background. “Resurrection of Seneca Lake,” a large painting, doesn’t focus solely on that body of water. There’s certainly a lake in the artwork, but it’s accompanied by trees, sky and hillsides. Again, the painting conveys Glisson’s impression of the scene. Karen Jean Smith has bowls, tumblers and cups in the exhibit, with the pieces all referring to wood in some manner. Smith creates tiny motifs that look like knotholes and pays close attention to the surfaces of the works. It’s easy, for example, to look at one of her tumblers and wonder if it’s really wood. Similarly, there are larger pieces suggesting a block of wood that’s been cut. Cows, as previously mentioned, play a role in the show, in most of Adriana Meiss’ paintings. These aren’t one-dimensional portrayals. In one work, the cow’s brown-and-white colors contrast with green pastures and trees. A second painting depicts a mother and calf, communicating a sense of their connection. And a third piece references autumn time, with orange and green colors popping out and reflecting on the cows. Meiss also has a painting, “Shady Porch,” on display,

and it highlights flowers close to a house. Beyond that, it affirms that the artist isn’t fixated on cows. In the past, her paintings have depicted florals, barns and scenes from the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes regions. Dana Stenson, the fourth artist, has displayed her jewelry at Edgewood for several months. She works with sterling silver and various stones and has indicated that she’s very much influenced by nature. She shows her work at venues such as the Plowshares Craftsfair and Peace Festival held every December at Nottingham High School, the Cornhill Arts Festival in Rochester and Buffalo’s Allentown Festival. Nature of Things works off of its theme and does a nice job of presenting pieces by a quartet of artists. Like the vast majority of Edgewood’s exhibitions, these are all local artists. The exhibit runs through Feb. 22 at the Edgewood Gallery, 216 Tecumseh Road. Hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call (315) 4458111. SNT

MEET THE

Ultimate Date Night FINALISTS Colin & Capri

Ryan & Ashlee

We met in college at SUNY Cortland and fell out of touch for more than five years. Through the powers of social media, we reconnected and quickly realized we didn’t want to let each other go for a second time. Although we were dating over 2,400 miles apart (San Francisco & Cazenovia), we both knew we wanted to make Central New York our home. It’s hard to put a price on being close to friends and family. This past July, we moved to the outskirts of downtown Syracuse and have loved exploring local restaurants and hidden gems. We love our community.

We met on E-Harmony. The first day Ashlee signed up, she got matched with me. Almost two years to the day after we met in person, we were married. Ashlee went back to nursing school after having twin girls and graduated while nine months pregnant with our son. She works 12 to 16-hour days at the hospital so she can spend more time at home with the kids. Finding time to do things together is tough with our schedules, and this would be a great gift for the love of my life!

Joan & Roger

We were Married Dec. 20,1969. A few months prior to our wedding, my husband bought, at auction, a house that had previously been the Hazard Branch Library (I had gone to that library as a child). At the time, I was the “acting” librarian at an elementary school in Syracuse. I later earned my MLS and became a school librarian. My husband said, “a librarian should have her own library.” He renovated the house and we and my two children lived there happily for 20 years. That is part of my “happily ever after story.”

Tina & Rick

Rick and I were brought together by our angels. Rick lost his son, Justin, in a car accident on 11/18/13. He was 18 years old and lived in Painted Post, NY. I lost my daughter, Kelsey, to leukemia on 11/1/05. She was 12 years old. When Rick and I met, we didn’t know about each other’s loss. About three weeks into dating, it was mentioned. We had tears and had so much to share that only parents that lost a child would know. We have been dating for nine months now, and it has been wonderful. We understand each other on so many levels. We both grew up loving Arctic Cat Snowmobiles and now ride together. We rode to so many places on Rick’s Harley Davidson this past summer. We are living life to its fullest and finally enjoying life with each other. We are truly soulmates.

Shirley & Jim

My daughter kept telling me about this really nice man that lived a couple of houses away she wanted me to meet. I kept saying no, I was happy with myself. A couple of months later, I was taking a nap after working summer school when a knock came on the door. I opened the door, and there stood my daughter and this man! I apologized to him and told him I really wasn’t up to meeting anyone. After they left, I felt like I had been rude. I got up and baked a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies and called my daughter in the house. I asked her to take the cookies to him with my apologies if I was rude. After that, Mr. White started coming by to see me, and that was almost 26 years ago. We’ve been married for 20 years in April.

Alice & John

We met when I was 12 and he was 15 on the west side of Syracuse. For months after meeting, we were inseparable — that is, until my mother found out. As soon as school let out for summer, she sent me to my aunt’s in Tonawanda. When I returned in August, he had moved. Mom was happy, but my heart was broken. I prayed every night that I would see him again. That didn’t happen until I was 15. I saw him running down the street and yelled to him. After talking, we agreed to meet up that night. He let me know that he was here on leave from the U.S.M.C. Two weeks later, he asked me to marry him when he returned home in May. I would be 16 by then. I threatened my mother that I would go to California with him now if she wouldn’t sign the papers for me. On June 1, 1974, we were married. We are still together and happy.

P.J. & Janet

Lori & Josh

Walking down the street one sunny day afternoon, I saw this little blonde girl sitting on a grassy hill. How did I know we would fall in love soon. We would work and play, grow older each day. Then she would give us a beautiful family, what more can I say? As the years fly by, and our hairs turn grey. Our dreams still go on, each and everyday. For fifty-three years, she has always been mine. The one and only, My Valentine.

Teresa & George

When we were engaged, his friends at work had bets that he wouldn’t go through with the wedding! Thirty-five years later, we’re still going strong! We survived my pancreatic cancer and his open-heart surgery. His health forced him to retire, and then I retired because you can have all the money in the world, but you can never get back time. We know how lucky we are that we still have each other. And we live our happily ever after every day! So much so that last year at age 57 I got “Happily Ever After” tattooed on my foot! My husband also got a tattoo, something we swore we would NEVER do and never allowed our kids to do while they lived in our house! LOL! Boy, were they shocked! My husband and I are basically together 24/7, and it still feels like we’re in our 20s. He still makes me laugh, and he still grabs my boobs from behind when I’m washing the dishes! I can’t sum up our love story in 100 words because ours is a life story, and we’re not done living it!

Josh and I met online playing “Call of Duty” on PlayStation 3. We started calling, texting, talking on PS3 every chance we could, and Skype video calling for about five months before Josh decided to move to New York from California to continue our relationship, and we couldn’t have made a better choice. Eight years and three amazing children together, with our four-year wedding anniversary coming up, we still fall more in love every day.

George & Kathy

George and Kathy have been married 50 years. With six kids and eight grandchildren, they are always there for us when we need them. My dad still works full time, owning his own real estate company in Chittenango and driving car parts from Napa to Penn Yann three days per week, while my Mom goes just to keep him company. I admire their glowing love for each other. They deserve this opportunity because they have taught me that marriage is more than a relationship — it is the perfect balance of a partnership between two people willing to sacrifice their own lives for each other’s wellbeing. Having parents who are still obsessed with each other, at my age, is something rare. I feel like this date night was meant for them! Submitted by their daughter Colleen.
