Better Late Than Never

An unnamed man in Frankfurt, Germany, called police 20 years ago to report his Volkswagen Passat missing, believing it had been stolen. In November, the car was found just where the driver had left it, according to Metro News — in a parking garage that is now scheduled to be demolished. Police drove the 76-year-old to the garage to be reunited with his car, which is unfit to drive, before sending it off to the scrap heap.

What’s in a Name?

Death Wish Coffee — a cold-brewed, canned coffee the company touts as “fiercely caffeinated” (as much as four and a half times more caffeine per fluid ounce than regular coffee), with a skull and crossbones logo — recalled its 11-ounce cans on Sept. 20 because they could possibly contain the deadly toxin botulin. Company founder Mike Brown, 37, said no incidents have been reported, but he is very serious about the safety of his product. “I know our logo and name might not seem like it reflects that,” Brown told The Washington Post. Production has been halted, and customers can request refunds from Death Wish’s website.

Mermaid Aries, 18, of Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, likes to wear her specially made mermaid tail when she swims at local pools. But the Dolphin Centre in Bromsgrove, under new management, has banned her from using the flipper because “they worry I might hit someone with my tail or might get into trouble in the water and drown,” Aries (real name Leia Trigger) told the Worcester News on Sept. 22. “It is my ambition to become a professional mermaid that attends children’s parties and other events.

The only problem is that I have nowhere to swim.” After the story made headlines, the Perdiswell Leisure Centre stepped up. Aquatic development officer Vanessa Bale welcomed Aries to the pool, offering her “early mornings and late evenings.”

Aries is thrilled: “I am absolutely ecstatic.

I never thought I’d be able to swim with my tail ever again.”

Briefs Encounter

Even Superman underwear couldn’t protect Nathan French, 19, from Halewood, Merseyside, England, as he climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Wales, the 3,600-foot Snowdon. French managed

asked him to step out of his car because they had spotted contraband inside.

Kingsbury complied, but then took off running, heading toward the beach — and didn’t stop when he hit the ocean. According to the Port City Daily, Kingsbury continued swimming for almost an hour as police tracked him with a drone-mounted camera, which allowed them to also see the shark trailing him in the water. At that point, said Surf City Police Chief Ron Shanadan, the chase “became a rescue operation,” and multiple emergency crews were dispatched to pick up the fugitive.

Kingsbury was taken into custody in North Topsail Beach and charged with resisting arrest and possession of marijuana and methamphetamine.

Most Considerate Criminal

Miles Hill of the Llanberis mountain rescue team noted, “We hope Mr. French is back in the mountains soon, perhaps in the full suit (cape optional), rather than just the underwear.”

Exploitation 101

Jerry Sargeant, 39, of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, England, who claims on his website to be able to cure cancer via Skype, has been convicted in Westminster Magistrate’s Court of violating the United Kingdom’s 1939 Cancer Act, which prohibits advertising services that “offer to treat any person for cancer.” The Daily Mail reports that Sargeant, who calls himself “The Facilitator,” says he discovered his talent for “Star Magic” when he

saw a woman’s soul fly out of her body during a car accident in Romania. He also claims to have flown to Alpha Centauri on a spaceship and returned to Earth just minutes later. Sargeant’s healing sessions cost 90 pounds for 15 minutes, but he told police that appointments can go up to an hour because “you can’t put a time on magic.” He was fined 4,700 pounds (U.K.).

Errant Butt-Dials

The New York court system’s former spokesman David Bookstaver, 59, is under investigation after accidentally admitting to a New York Post reporter in August that he “barely shows up to work.” The incident happened after Bookstaver had talked with the reporter on his cell phone.

Without realizing it, Bookstaver redialed the reporter’s number, and the reporter listened in as Bookstaver talked with two other people about how little he works.

Bookstaver was six weeks away from retirement at the time of his Aug. 17 firing from his $166,000-per-year job.

Least Competent Criminals

Police officers in Surf City, N.C., stopped Zachary Kingsbury, 20, of Lynnwood, Washington, on Aug. 30 and

Nelly’s Taqueria in Hicksville, N.Y., suffered a break-in on Oct. 3, but the burglar redefined the term “clean getaway.” Surveillance video showed a man donning food-service gloves and starting a pot of water to boil before hammering open the cash register. He secured $100 in his pockets, leaving a dollar in the tip jar, then started “cooking up a storm,” owner Will Colon told Newsday. Cameras recorded as the thief cooked beans, sauteed shrimp and chicken, and helped himself to a cold soda before enjoying his meal standing up. “The way he handled that pan, man, the dude had some skills,” Colon said. Afterward, he carefully stored the leftovers in the refrigerator, cleaned his pans and wiped down all the surfaces he had used. Then he took off through the back window, the same way he had come in.

Sex Therapy

Zookeepers believe China’s 4-yearold giant panda Meng Meng, currently on loan to the Berlin Zoo, displays her displeasure with her surroundings, food or caretakers by walking backward. “Meng Meng is in puberty,” zoo director Andreas Knieriem explained to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper on Oct. 22. “The reverse walk is a protest.” To address the situation, zookeepers will introduce Meng Meng to Jiao Qing, a male giant panda three years older, who presumably will ease her frustration by engaging in sexual activity with her.

Former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner: Could still be a thorn in Cuomo’s side.

TWO CENTRAL NEW YORK POLITICIANS HARBOR ALBANY AMBITIONS Two months ago, they were both brought together in Albany to talk politics: two longtime Central New York politicians with two different political ideologies representing two different constituencies, but who soon may seek the same office.

Former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner and state Sen. John DeFrancisco dropped hints last year about their possible ambitions to challenge Andrew Cuomo in the 2018 race for New York governor. Within the same week, one of those hints became stronger and the other became reality.

On Jan. 30 Republican Sen. DeFrancisco, the Senate’s deputy majority leader who has represented the Syracuse area in the state Legislature for 25 years, formally announced his candidacy for the state’s highest executive office. Days before DeFrancisco’s announcement, Miner told The New York Times that she was still eyeing a Democratic challenge to Cuomo, while no longer weighing a run for Congress.

Could either DeFrancisco or Miner put together a campaign that could carry them to their respective party nominations, and ultimately, the governor’s mansion? To defeat the two-term incumbent, they both face an uphill climb.

DeFrancisco discussed that obstacle during his announcement: “The pundits and the pontificators, the press and the political class, will say that we can’t win, that a Republican from upstate New York has no chance.”

History and geography are not on his side. In New York, registered Democratic voters outnumber Republicans 2-to-1. The state hasn’t elected a Republican governor since 2002 and it hasn’t elected a governor from the upstate region since the 1920s.

Yet DeFrancisco has many qualities that would make him a formidable opponent. He hit Cuomo hard on perhaps his two weakest fronts: economic development and corruption.

“Our once-proud state has become a laughingstock around the country,” DeFrancisco said, “with the highest taxes, the worst business climate, high energy costs, a failing transportation and

infrastructure system, failing schools and rising unemployment in every region of the state, except New York City.”

DeFrancisco will likely center his message on improving the economic status of the state, particularly upstate. He has been a constant critic of the governor’s business incentive plans, which have produced lackluster results over several years at the expense of taxpayer money.

Crafting the right economic argument, and being from upstate himself, DeFrancisco could further capitalize on Cuomo’s poor performance upstate during his 2014 re-election bid. After defeating Republican Carl Paladino in 2010, Cuomo only won a handful of counties north of Westchester County four years later when he faced Rob Asterino.

Indeed, the region could be DeFrancisco’s for the taking. As of January, a slim majority — 51 percent — of upstaters view Cuomo favorably. That’s up from 48 percent last July and 43 percent last March.

It doesn’t hurt that DeFrancisco’s economic fight conveniently fits in with his anti-corruption stance, since one of Cuomo’s former top aides is currently on trial in Manhattan for a bribery scheme involving one of the governor’s economic development projects.

Cuomo has also overseen a swath of state workers — including the two leaders of the state Legislature — be arrested, convicted and sentenced on corruption charges. Despite an electoral promise to clean up Albany, Cuomo has failed to get any concrete ethics reform through the Legislature.

Another factor that could potentially help DeFrancisco is if Cuomo is bruised by a progressive criticizing him from his left flank. That’s where Stephanie Miner comes into play.

After close ties with the Cuomo family, Miner’s relationship with them has soured in the last few years. In the 1990s, she was a regional representative for Gov. Mario Cuomo, and then in 2012, Andrew Cuomo appointed her as co-chair of the state Democratic Committee. She left that position after a short time following disagreements with Cuomo’s policies.

She has since attacked the governor on infrastructure spending and not doing enough to help struggling upstate cities. These criticisms against her own party’s governor have raised her

political profile, with many wondering if now is her time to make a move.

The last time Cuomo had to face a progressive woman was in 2014. Frustrated with Cuomo’s fiscal conservatism, cozy relationship with Senate Republicans and failure to address corruption during his first term, liberals pushed Fordham Professor Zephyr Teachout into the spotlight.

The grassroots-leading Teachout staged a surprisingly strong campaign against Cuomo and managed to win a third of the Democratic vote in the primary, carrying 23 upstate counties, including Albany County.

Miner could actually improve on Teachout’s results since she lives upstate and is more known than Teachout was by this time in her race. But to win a primary, she would need to gain traction in the downstate area. Coincidentally, Miner will spend this spring in New York City teaching a course at New York University.

Besides going up against a powerful incumbent with $30 million in his campaign chest, Miner’s largest obstacle may be her own progressivism. While it would be a stretch to label her as the same grassroots candidate that Teachout was, even Teachout once said that Miner was “somebody who represents the kind of politician we should have.”

Miner is still very much a Clintonian Democrat. She endorsed Hillary Clinton for president just two days after she announced her candidacy. And even if Miner was more progressive, Teachout’s strong performance against Cuomo in 2014 steered him toward enacting more liberal policies in his second term, from banning hydrofracking in the state, to initiating plans for a $15 minimum wage and free college tuition.

This shift to the left might explain why many Democrats approve of Miner but still want Cuomo to be governor. An August 2017 Siena College poll found that Syracuse Democrats preferred Cuomo to Miner as governor, 47 percent to 38 percent.

When it comes to both Miner and DeFrancisco, there’s also one external factor that could help or hinder them: President Donald Trump. DeFrancisco supported the president early on, but if the 2018 election ends up being a Democratic wave, it could severely damage any chance DeFrancisco might have. As a vocal critic of Trump, Miner could turn that energy into a winning ingredient against Cuomo if she can prove to Democratic voters that she is more willing to take on Trump than the governor.

A Central New Yorker could very well be the state’s next governor, yet DeFrancisco and Miner certainly have their work cut out for them. SNT

RELOCATION, RELOCATION, RELOCATION FOR BREWPUB AND YOGA STUDIO Sahm Brewing Co.

The latest addition to downtown Syracuse’s booming beer community isn’t like other brewpubs. “It’s all about the beer,” noted Sahm Brewing Co. owner Ryan Sahm.

Sahm Brewing takes part of the space within the former Clark’s Ale House on 203 S. Salina St. The operation offers a mix of production brewing with a homebrew feel. Sahm stores a 31-gallon batch barrel in the basement; for comparison, Empire Brewing Company has 60 barrels at its Cazenovia farm. Sahm also has three electric kettles and two stainless steel fermenters, along with several more that he fabricated himself.

Despite its smaller size, the brewery has a focus on education. Sahm wants people to come in and ask questions about the beers: what taste they were going for, the

history of the type of beer, notable points about each batch. His bartenders also chat about the beers with customers.

“It’s somewhere to come in and learn about what you’re drinking,” Sahm said.

The brewery currently serves six house beers and six guest beers, along with some wine and cider. Sahm hopes to create a “beer bible,” an encyclopedia of sorts to go along with the menu, outlining each drink for customers.

Sahm had previously brewed at the Cosmopolitan Building on West Fayette Street. He had to close his operation after learning the building wasn’t properly zoned for all of his ambitions, most notably a tasting room.

Ironically, Sahm filled out the paperwork to get Sahm Brewing off the ground while sitting at a table at Clark’s, shortly before the venue closed its doors in the summer of 2016. When Sahm finally decided to relocate, the Clark’s spot wasn’t on his mind; he originally envisioned opening his business in Manlius or another suburb. The rental space sign at Clark’s caught his eye, however, and he decided to call.

Now Sahm thinks of himself as a Salina Street pioneer, bringing the same sense of revitalization he has seen throughout the city. Sahm was born in Central New York but was raised in Arizona; after a stint

with the Navy, he returned to the Syracuse area five years ago.

Sahm’s history with beer stems from his Navy years, when he would quaff a local brew wherever he was stationed. He has taken beer-related courses through the Cicerone Certification Program, and he plans to continue those studies. “Everything I learned, I want to give back,” he said.

Sahm Brewing Company is open Tuesdays through Fridays, 3 to 10 p.m.; Saturdays, 1 to 10 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 to 8 p.m. For information, call (315) 877-7246.

O Yoga Studio

The old Dietz lantern factory, 225 Wilkinson St. on Syracuse’s West Side, received a facelift last year. What was once a crumbling brick shadow of the manufacturing age has become a luxury, mixed-use building, with more than 90 loft apartments and more than 50,000 square feet of commercial space.

One business taking advantage of the refurbished factory is O Yoga, located on the first floor. Owner Tiffany Cagwin closed her yoga practice in Rockwest Center, 1005 W. Fayette St., to reopen at Dietz. “It’s like a little neighborhood,” she said about her relocation to the new space.

The front of the studio has glass walls, making it look more connected to the rest of the corridor with residents and business owners. The building also has easier access to parking. With Leavenworth Park across the street and a courtyard on the property, both offer potential locations for outdoor yoga when the weather improves, Cagwin said. And Middle Ages Brewery, just a few blocks away, provides an easy meet-up location for her customers after sessions.

Despite the renovations, portions of the building remain in their original condition, paying homage to the historic Dietz lantern company. Cagwin’s yoga rooms have original fire doors and sections of exposed brick and beam work, along with large windows that had once been outside facing walls. She commissioned special art prints for display behind the window glass.

Cagwin has done yoga for 15 years to help ease the pain of Crohn’s disease, a condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. She practiced at home until she relocated to Boston for work and found a studio run by Ame Wren. “I felt like I found a home in a city where I didn’t know anyone” Cagwin said.

She opened O Yoga in 2011, starting out in Armory Square before moving to Rockwest Center. Five years later she added a second location at 4465 E. Genesee St. in DeWitt inside the former Lotus Life space. Between both studios she now has 30 independently contracted yoga instructors and provides up to 50 classes per week. More than 70 yogis can fit in the larger yoga room at the Dietz building, and 40 can fit in the second smaller room.

“I wanted a place where people felt embraced and welcomed,” Cagwin said, no matter their level or previous experience.

Cagwin also organizes yoga retreats, where practitioners can go on mini-vacations themed around wellness and meditation. Her most recent group trip was to Costa Rica in mid-January, and she hopes to offer a sailboat charter retreat.

Diana Jacobs Band. Good Metticine (independent) Soul music talks about life, the reality of every day, personally and within the world. The Diana Jacobs Band delivers these goods on this new album, touching on topics about issues both close to home and beyond.

Jacobs’ big voice fills the tracks and the band plays in the soulful styles that inspire them, with audible influences like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder coming through. Some songs sway with the sexy groove that soul is known for, while others burst with power.

The band is comprised of Jacobs (vocals, keyboard), her husband Mettis Jacobs (guitar, vocals), Sue Ferlenda (vocals, keyboards), Fred Gibson (bass), Dave Kuykendall (guitar) and Dave Chitambar (drums). The disc was recorded at Moletrax Studios in Syracuse over the last three years. Production is clean, Jacobs’ voice is crystal clear and the soulful mood the group is striving for comes across on every track.

Lyrics are simplistic, at times cliché, but easily relatable. The soft groove of

“Trippin’” allows Jacobs to showcase vocal improvisation that stands out, while the sweet harmonies add classic depth within the verses. “It’s OK” is beautiful and broken down while “Give It To Me” is straight-up funk and “Wastin’ Time” is reminiscent of the jazzy Jennifer Hartswick Band. The album ends on an upbeat note with “Carry Me Away,” which attempts to tackle themes about life, love, music and our place within it all.

Within the first two minutes of Heavy Blue, Amanda Rogers is laying it on thick.

Although her voice is high and seemingly delicate, the songs are heavy and the lyrics are penetrating: “We all crave what we’re fighting for/ We all crave what we’ve come this far just to die for/ We all crave what we can’t afford/ Salt of the sea/ Give me something to quench this thirst in me/ Give me something, give me something that I need.”

you could frame on a wall. Rhymes aren’t obvious, with metaphors that leave just enough for the listener to apply to their own experience. Rogers is one of the few local artists who write songs that are evergreens, the type listeners could go back and still relate to all over again.

While her 2014 double disc Wild brought the same depth, Heavy Blue feels more powerful. Songs like “Little Girl at the End of the World” are clever and almost cruel in the way they hit on things we don’t want to think about: “Monsters in your wake/ No second chances for mistakes/ So, now you’ll find your strength when the earth starts to quake/ When the earth does shake/ Now at the end of the

world you’ll find yourself, little girl.”

While Rogers’ vocals and lyrics shine, so does her piano playing and the band that backs her. The build-up on “Little Girl at the End of the World” is fierce and strong, with giant explosions that wane back into the sadness of her voice. The contrast is startling and effective.

“Tornado” and “They Will Call it Love” are standout tracks that stab into the heart of the human condition, loving and hurting each other, whether we mean to or not. Rogers has the rare ability to write catchy songs that also communicate on many levels, a true victory for any artist.

ANYTHING GOES IN EDGEWOOD SHOW Edgewood Gallery’s new exhibit has a lot on its plate. A Visual Diary presents artists’ interpretations of scenes in upstate New York and Holland, encompasses media ranging from paintings to ceramics and jewelry, and touches on a teacher-student relationship. Years ago, Chris Baker taught art to David Owens. Now, the two of them are involved in a group show.

Owens’ oil paintings depict both pastoral scenes, as seen in “Harvest Time,” and moments on a highway. In one work, he’s portraying trees, bushes and sky, done in purple and orange colors. In “September Light,” he’s working with cars, telephone wires and rugged concrete.

His best works have an impressionist flavor. “Evening After the Rain” conveys darkness, but the real action comes in the bottom half of the painting where cars, road and headlights all melt together in a series of long stripes. In “Winter Reflections,” he depicts gray sky, buildings in orange and red, and ice decorated by flecks of orange and red color.

“August Sky” pushes aside any notion of nice fluffy clouds. Here, the clouds are represented by small, dot-like forms which contrast with a scene on the ground that’s thick, seemingly unknowable.

Viewers will assume that there are trees or vegetation there but can’t be sure.

Baker works in gouache on illustration board, in a style that’s almost photorealistic. He has a knack for detail and an ability to choose visual strategies that energize his works. Thus, a painting of a scene near Zaanse Schaus, Holland, features sailboats but also focuses on vegetation on the water. “Lift Bridge” combines the bridge depicted in fine detail, cars and buildings in the background, and shadows on the water.

“Dutch Cafe” leads the viewer past bicycles, bushes and buildings to a site where people enjoy a meal at outdoor tables. The diners are seen on the painting’s periphery, not at its center. Yet another painting depicts a blacksmith’s shop, showing pieces of wood, extension cords on the floor, a cluster of tools, and other items. On its face, the shop doesn’t seem visually intriguing, but Baker is able to transform the scene.

Artist Don Seymour has a variety of ceramic pieces on display: vases, cups, bowls and other works. They both

document his general skills and the attention he pays to details such as the cups’ handles. Beyond that, there are pieces, like the bowls created in earth colors, that are visually delightful.

Seymour, it should be noted, is involved with ceramics on several levels. He runs Clayscapes, a Syracuse venue, which has multiple operations: It hosts ceramic exhibits, instructs adult students about the process of making ceramics, and sells ceramic supplies used by high school and college classes.

Finally, the show presents handcrafted, silver and gemstone jewelry made by Judy McCumber. These works include necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, among others.

The exhibition has several positive aspects. It contrasts the paintings created

by Baker and Owens, displays an assortment of artworks large enough to get a sense of each artist’s work, and continues Edgewood’s tradition of concentrating on artists from Central New York.

DEFRAN MAKES HIS MOVE Longtime state Sen. John DeFrancisco eyes the governor’s mansion

By Walt Shepperd Whether at the ballot box or in pickup basketball games, it is obvious that state Sen. John DeFrancisco doesn’t like to lose. A calm intensity settles in, and an attitude emerges based in large part on hard work and force of habit. From the Syracuse City School District’s board of education to the city’s Common Council to his current 50th state Senate District seat, he has never lost a contest for elective office.

This time, however, he has announced his intention to seek the Republican endorsement in the coming race for governor. “I know how to play hardball,” he insists. But the odds are far from friendly.

Being a Republican candidate from upstate running against an incumbent downstate Democrat, the son of a previous governor, does not seem to be piling up many reality points. But DeFrancisco feels that his athletic roots just might even the score.

“From my formative years I played baseball probably since I was 6 years old through college and beyond,” he observes. “What it did for me was a lot of things. I was nor-

mally the captain, or as we got older the one who organized everything because nobody else wanted to take on that responsibility. It wasn’t only the excitement of playing the sport; being an athlete was a great reward, but dealing with people and being with a team means so much for anything you do in life.”

First, however, he must secure his party’s nomination. Two other contenders have thrown their hats in the ring, state Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb and former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra, and two others are considering.

DeFrancisco made his announcement Jan. 30 at Liverpool’s Holiday Inn, as he criticized Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s penchant for “gimmicks and budget one-shots” and Albany’s “pay-to-play culture,” and declared, “We must make New York affordable again.”

He also used a rare celestial phenomenon as a metaphor for his political chances.

“There’s an old saying: once in a blue moon,” the senator said. “Everyone in politics knows that once in a blue moon we can bring about fundamental change. Well folks,

tonight, there is actually a blue moon,” pointing out the Super Blue Blood Moon lunar eclipse that would occur within hours of his speech.

In anticipation of athletic competition there are physical and mental warmup exercises to prepare you for the challenge. How do you prepare for playing the candidate in the voting game?

I’m still very active in physical exercise, whether it be working on an elliptical machine or with free weights, or simply running. I also still play tennis. I play golf periodically. You’ve got to be in shape to be at your best.

Being in elective office, and having practiced law, the mental part is obviously the toughest. You’ve got to be mentally tough. With politics, now that I’ve been in state government so long, the issues come easy to me, I’ve seen them for years. Now I feel as good as I can possibly feel mentally, because I’m constantly talking about these issues, because I’ve been running around the state saying the same things.

One element of athletic psychology is intimidating potential opponents out of the race. Two other folks have announced GOP gubernatorial intentions. You announced. Nobody dropped out.

That’s true, because it’s a little different than an athletic game. This is simply a numbers game. There are counties throughout the state that have committees.

Those committees are going to decide, based on a weighted vote: Bigger counties have a stronger number of votes that go to the selection of the candidate. What you’re really doing is going to each area of the state, making phone calls, talking to people face to face, and you’re keeping a count and trying to figure out how you’re going to get more than 50 percent. There’s no psych there.

Your strategy for this game requires a balance of teamwork with individual effort. Do they get confused?

No. Not at all. In fact, much of today I was calling committee people in different areas of the state, and calling members of my team following state senators, asking for their assistance, talking to their chairpeople. The teamwork is required for the game I’m playing right now, both the mental and the physical elements. I announced on Tuesday night.

The following morning I was on a 6:30 a.m. TV interview. I drove to Albany, had two radio interviews, and interviewed on shows in the area the rest of the day up until 7 o’clock at night. If you’re not in physically good shape you don’t make it through day 2. You’re always on your toes because every interview is different.

Does stardom have the same impact on this game as it does in athletics?

I don’t know about stardom, but what I believe is the competitive drive keeps you

going. You want to be successful at the goals that you have put out for yourself, and that’s been true of every campaign I’ve run over the years.

In fact, when I was in law school there was another very competitive individual in my class and we engaged in many allnight Monopoly games. Nobody wanted to lose. I’ve been a competitive individual my whole life, and that’s what keeps you moving in this capacity.

In athletics there are minor leagues for developing skills. Looking back now, what did the Syracuse school board prepare you for?

It prepared me for being an elected official and making nobody happy.

The school board was probably one of the most difficult positions that I have ever been in, because it’s very deeply personal. With parents, their child is the most important thing to them, and they know what’s best for their children and unfortunately different parents have different knowledges of what they think is best. You have to listen to everyone and make a good decision. In many cases the positions were irreconcilable.

What did your experience on the Common Council give you for this race?

It’s just a continuation of the same thing.

It was, quite frankly, a lot less stressful.

There were issues, but when you’re dealing with things other than an individual’s child, the emotions aren’t as strong.

But what the council did was broaden the issues. The council had to pass a budget that included the budget of the school district, but it also had to deal with the state of New York, because most of the funding came, and still comes, from the state of New York. You get a broader feel for the inner-workings of government because you’re really in the middle of how the government units interact with each other.

What has your current position in the state Senate, particularly your leadership roles, given you in anticipation of being governor?

There are several committee chairmanships, including Judiciary and others before that, and then Finance Committee.

Being chair of Finance, what that did for me, I truly learned, in an intimate way, all the aspects of the budget.

If you’re chair of the Judiciary you know things about the courts and whether it’s criminal or civil. You know a lot of things about the codes of the state of New York dealing with criminal or civil matters. But when you’re finance chair you learn about the financing of all the departments. We would have hearings that would last for 10 hours for 13 different days. I learned more in that period on the Finance Committee than I learned in any time in my history in government. SNT

QUASIMODO RINGS THE BELL IN POSH PRODUCTION With 52 performers on the floorboards plus 13 players in the orchestra, the musical stage version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame shapes up as the grandest production ever from the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild (running through Saturday, Feb. 10).

If the citation of the Alan Menken-Stephen Schwartz score brings to mind the 1996 Walt Disney animated film, don’t be misled. This much more mature stage version of the Victor Hugo classic comes from Peter Parnell’s 2014 book and became infamous among musical theater buffs when, in spring 2015, it did not go to Broadway. Among this Hunchback’s many allures is the chance to see the one that nearly got away.

In the late 1990s the Disney company realized its shows could reach greater heights if they escaped from the treacly family entertainment box. Thus, Broadway director Julie Taymor, borrowing from avant-garde theater, opened The Lion King in 1997. By 1999 Stephen Sondheim collaborator James Lapine excised all the cutes from the Hunchback cartoon and opened a German-language version in Berlin. It was a major hit, running for three years and playing other European capitals.

As it was thought too dour for America, in 2014 Peter Parnell wrote the version seen here for the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, which next year ran for a month at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. Despite ecstatic word-of-

mouth, the powers that be decided against a Broadway opening.

Hunchback, like Hugo’s Les Miserables, is a sprawling 19th-century novel, with 10 named characters and seven supporting players who also have multiple roles.

The relatively small BTG space allows director Abel Searor to focus attention on the crowded stage as well as sort out the lengthy exposition, beginning with explaining how the Hunchback came to reside in the Cathedral. Two orphaned brothers, wastrel Jehan (Derek Powell) and pious Claude Frollo (Bob Brown), take different moral paths. Jehan gets Gypsy woman Florika (Taylor Peck) pregnant, producing a malformed child.

As the father is dying of the pox he bids his brother, Claude, now archdeacon of Notre Dame, to take the child, whom he calls Quasimodo.

Years pass. A previously unnoticed male actor emerges from the pack to call out, “What makes a monster, and what makes a man?” He uses his fingers to paint a series of lines on his face, signaling deformity, and straps on a prosthetic “hunch” before jumping to swing a knotted rope implying a bell pull. What an entrance for the title character, played by Liam Fitzpatrick. Searor’s note identifies the man-monster quote as the central theme of the complex action.

Frollo would keep out of Quasimodo’s life. Even more impressive is the tall, vivacious Gypsy girl Esmeralda (Ceara Windhausen) with the show-stopping “Rhythm of the Tambourine.” Taylor, who always gives more than his share to BTG productions (he also built the set with its stained-glass window), revives some of the demonic energy of his recent American Idiot. Windhausen, one of our strongest players, dominates even the most crowded of scenes.

Captain Phoebus (Paul Thompson) of the city guards represents civil law, but he flirts with the girls at his entrance, “Rest and Recreation.” The ever-icy Frollo wants Phoebus to chase away the Gypsies near the cathedral. The cleric is horrified to see a bond growing between Esmeralda and Quasimodo. And like so many surface puritans, at least in stories, underneath Frollo nurtures of potent lechery for the girl. This inevitably leads to trouble and Liam Fitzpatrick in Baldwinsville Theatre Guild’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

As compelling as the plot may be, Hunchback is more about spectacle than story. With its medieval setting, the 22-person choir in robes on either side of the stage, and energetic dance numbers provided by choreographer Stephfond Brunson and dance captain Lauren Puente, we get an enveloping, throbbing dynamism not unlike Carmina Burana.

The musical also appears to have been influenced by director William Dieterle’s 1939 movie version. Liam Fitzpatrick may not look like Charles Laughton, but his solo numbers, like “Heaven’s Light,” seize what Searor has identified as Hunchback’s center.

As Frollo performs in 10 musical numbers, Bob Brown’s appearance in that role is almost a co-lead rather than a mere supporter. In a refutation of his usually exuberant persona, Brown delivers a hiss-worthy villain for the first time. SNT

Implement design into 2D construction drawings with a complete Bill of Materials, or work with staff designers to do so. Participate in superconducting accelerator cavity infrastructure development, operation and maintenance (ex., – clean room, UHV furnace, Electron Beam Welding, chem-room apparatus). May require guidance and oversight of staff regarding engineering and design elements of projects. Working in close cooperation with laboratory staff at all levels, monitor assembly, installation, and commissioning of equipment for multiple, simultaneous research program projects to include superconducting microwave cavity research and device development.

A Bachelor’s degree in Applied Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience, plus 3-5 years practical experience in engineering and design is required; recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Required experience includes fluency with commercial parametric 3D CAD programs; ability to visualize solutions to complex mechanical problems; demonstrated understanding of precision machining practices such as turning, milling, and NC machine tools; and ability to work efficiently within tight schedules and competing priorities is critical. Desirable experience includes the following: familiarity in design of particle accelerator and/or light source (X-ray) beamline components; familiarity in the preparation for cryogenic tests of microwave devices; familiarity with designs using specialty materials; familiarity with clean room assembly work and/or chemical treatment of materials will be an asset; FEA-based modeling programs, e.g., ANSYS; familiarity with UHV equipment design and practices as well as with cryogenic engineering and design; familiarity in computer scripting and/or programming languages.
