Curses, Foiled Again

Melissa Allen, 32, was arrested on Dec. 19 after attempting to shoplift more than $1,000 in merchandise from a Framingham, Mass., Target store, reported The Boston Globe. On hand to help in the arrest were more than 50 police officers who were at the store to participate in the annual “Shop With a Cop” holiday charity event.

Firefighters in North Philadelphia burrowed through trash for hours to free a man who was trapped in the back of a garbage truck on Nov. 27. Philadelphia Police were not sure how the 33-year-old unnamed man had landed in the truck, but speculated he may have been sleeping in a dumpster when it was emptied into the truck. WCAU News reported that the man went to the hospital with abdomen, hip and leg injuries.

Unintended Consequences

Stephen Allen of Tukwila, Wash., moved in with his grandmother years ago to help care for her. When she died last year, he invited his brother, a convicted drug dealer, to move in, but along with him came drug activity, squatters, stolen property and debris. Allen eventually asked police to raid the home, but when they did on Dec. 15, they evicted Allen as well, leaving him homeless. “It’s all legal, but it’s wrong,” Allen told KIRO-7 News.

“I can’t do anything about it.”

In the wee hours of Nov. 5, before the McDonald’s in Columbia, Md., had opened, a woman reached through the drive-thru window and tried to pour herself a soda, but she couldn’t reach the dispenser. The Associated Press reports that, rather than driving down the road to a 24-hour restaurant, she can be seen on surveillance video squeezing herself through the drive-thru window, pouring herself a soda and collecting a box full of unidentified items before taking off.

Bright Idea

Disgruntled driver Matthew Middleton, 49, of Peterlee, England, spotted a speed camera near Hartlepool Rugby Club in October and decided to take a stand. He got out of his car and stood in front of the camera, blocking it, until police arrested him. Middleton further antagonized the officer by calling him a “pig” and giving his name as Elvis Presley. “They acted like what I did was the crime of the century,” Middleton told Metro News. “I know I shouldn’t have done it. People have just been laughing about it. Well, apart from my wife.” Middleton was fined about $54 plus court costs for his antics.

Stephens subsequently underperformed on a field sobriety test, according to The Independent Florida Alligator, and was arrested for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police Report

Stacy Scott of Anchorage, Alaska, arrived home on Nov. 24 to find thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing and jewelry missing, along with a signature item, George the mounted zebra head, which was a gift from a friend. The thief was bold enough to call a taxi to use as the getaway car and loaded the zebra head into its trunk — all of which was caught on surveillance camera at Scott’s home. Anchorage police tracked down and arrested Desiree Fuller, 38, for felony burglary and theft, and recovered most of Scott’s items. But George remained at large until the cab driver saw a story on KTVA-TV and contacted police — he had been holding the zebra hostage because Fuller neglected to pay her cab fare. In the spirit of the season, George was home for the holidays.

Becky Reilly of Omaha, Neb., was forced to call in a roofing company after discovering thousands of honeybees had invaded her home’s attic, producing so much honey that it was dripping down the side of the house. “We heard a loud and rhythmic buzzing, and it was somewhat terrifying because we knew what it meant,” Reilly told KETV. Jason Starkey of Takoda Green Roofing said he removed about 40 pounds of honey on Oct. 26 before moving the bees and tackling the damage, which he called “horrible.” Local beekeeper John Gebuhr moved the bees to his garage, but he is pessimistic about their survival through the winter.

Ewe Had To Be There

Rocky, an enterprising 7-month-old border collie in Devon, England, took the command “bring the sheep home” a little too literally in early November when he herded nine sheep into his owner’s kitchen. “I was in the kitchen and heard a noise,” Rocky’s owner, Rosalyn Edwards, told the BBC. “I turned around and the sheep were just standing there. It was funny at the time, but then there was quite a lot of wee, poo and mud everywhere.” The sheep stood around for a few minutes, then allowed themselves to be shown out the front door.

Snow Show displays Penny Santy’s oil featuring blue colors and a view of a cow’s head, Ryan Wood’s digital illustration depicting a cello, and several of Dan Shanahan’s absurdist, insightful works such as “Derecho Express” and “Slurptown.” And Tino Lopez goes big and bold in works like “Bella Muerte,” which includes a female figure, a text listing sins such as lust and greed, and an admonition: “think upon your sins.”

There are only a few sculptures on display, but they definitely merit extended viewing. “Protected,” a terracotta work by Judy Lieblein, positions a bird on top of a woman’s head. Mary Stanley’s “Do This in Memory of Me: Last Supper,” a tableau, combines a table and chairs plus five figures, two human and three birdlike.

Finally, the show presents other interesting works such as Robert Poorman’s mixed-media triptych, “Lune Exotique,” and Susan Murphy’s graphite-and-liquin pieces, “Selfie Boy” and “Graffiti Girl.”

This successful exhibit results from a partnership between the Adapt Syracuse Public Arts Task Force, which needed a venue for the 2018 edition of Snow Show, and the Tech Garden gallery, which needed to fill the initial exhibition slot for this year. Their collaboration led to a show that’s large and incisive, that sweeps in artists relatively new to town and some that have exhibited their work many times at Syracuse venues, and that welcomes different modes of artistic expression.

Snow Show 2018 is on display through April 13. The Tech Garden gallery is open Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information, call (315) 5792864. SNT

Among other things, Snow Show displays works with a sense of place. Eva Hunter depicts Fat Bottom Pond in the Adirondacks, and Christian Day portrays Pleasant Valley Farm as well as a nearby road and forest.

Sanlly Viera has created several pieces referencing either downtown Syracuse or streets on its edge. They aren’t realistic but interpretative. In one work, the artist plays with light and darkness. In another, he captures a downtown scene inhabited only by a couple walking down a street.

A third highlights a fire hydrant, demonstrating Viera’s ability to transform an ordinary object.

Urban art in Syracuse appears in Thaddeus Malley’s photographs, which depict a sculpture by Tash Taskale, a mural by “Diane O” on the side of a Grant Avenue flower shop, and a graffiti piece, “Out of Brain Cells,” at 215 Tully St. The images both document and celebrate the phenomenon of urban art.

The show encompasses contrasting artworks. Rachel Turner created “Earth Rhythm,” which drapes various yarns over a piece of driftwood, while Randall Korman’s “Plank House II” includes a wood post and birdhouse. Stephen Carter makes large pieces in digital vector graphite such as “Dome of Heaven,” which touches on astronomy.

In an exhibition of this size, it’s easy to point to divergent influences. Prints by Taro Takizawa, for example, pay homage to Japanese art. Look for his large, impressive work, “Noh men II.” Jamie Ashlaw does acrylic-on-panel works celebrating classic American signage. Thus, “Parrot Matches” evokes a sign used many decades ago to advertise a company’s product.

Moreover, the exhibit integrates diverse styles. There are acrylics such as Jamie Becker’s “Rebirth,” A. Blakely Bailey’s “Serenity,” with its rich mix of blue, orange, red and green colors, and Kelsey

TRASH TALK IN THE FINGER LAKES

I

t’s puzzling that there are individuals and businesses who believe that the pristine Finger Lakes region of upstate New York seems like a suitable place for a dumping ground.

During the summer of 2014 at the State Capitol Building in Albany, I listened to a group of environmentalists, winery owners and local officials as they pleaded with Gov. Andrew Cuomo to stop a Houston-area company’s proposal to store liquid propane gas in abandoned salt caverns on the shores of Seneca Lake.

They argued this plan would significantly increase the risk of an environmental accident, which could pollute or damage the area’s land and water used for making alcoholic products, the economic heart for the region. And even if there was no accident, a strong presence by the oil and gas industry would no doubt dampen the region’s appeal.

Nearly four years later, that issue has yet to come to rest. After abandoning plans to expand natural gas storage in the salt caverns last May, the company won a crucial court ruling in September that puts its propane storage plan closer to reality.

Meanwhile, another business is interested in using the area as a trash heap. A startup Rochester-based company is proposing to build a $365 million trash incinerator facility in the town of Romulus. It would be the largest trash incinerator in the entire state,

smack in the middle of Finger Lakes wine country.

There are a lot of things seriously wrong with this idea. For starters, the company, Circular enerG LLC, is new to the scene and has no prior experience in garbage burning.

Nor have nearby residents seen any blueprints for the facility, which would be built on a 48-acre parcel of land at the former Seneca Army Depot, between Seneca and Cayuga lakes. At this time, all the company has offered is a computer-generated illustration of a plant built somewhere in China.

After facing opposition to the plan from town and county leaders, Circular enerG is now trying to bypass the people who would be most affected by the facility. The company initially sought a special-use permit from the Romulus Planning Board.

Because it can’t get local support, the company is now turning to the state to get approval, using a 2011 law that allows a state siting board composed of five state agency heads and two town residents to decide whether to approve a new power plant.

But the most fundamental flaw in this plan goes back to the same argument that the winery owners made about storing propane in the salt caverns:

Propane and wine simply don’t mix, and neither do wine and trash.

If this plan goes forward, the Finger Lakes would be the new destination for hundreds of trash trucks, and eventually, trash trains, on a daily basis. Estimates have varied anywhere from 2,600 to 3,000 tons of trash would be transported to the region every single day — a region that is already home to two of the largest active landfills in New York, with three others nearby.

The plant also calls for a 260-foot smokestack, which would release pollutant emissions into the air. The Romulus K-12 school is only 3,200 feet downwind.

Circular enerG, and other advocates for the trash incinerator, argue that the facility — set for construction in 2019 and beginning operations in 2021 — would provide new jobs and new economic development to the Finger Lakes.

However, there is already an economic engine that the region has spent the last half-century building. According to the New York State Wine Association, more than 100 wineries in the Finger Lakes employ 25,000 people and pump an annual $4.8 billion in tourism dollars into the state economy.

Economic development is only useful if it adds to the economic advantages that already exist in a community. The belief that mountains of trash should be in the same area as a region whose agriculture is its life and blood is simply backward thinking. Whatever economic development would come from this trash incinerator would only undermine what is already generated from the region’s wine and tourism powerhouses.

Cuomo and the state of New York should ensure that this project is not approved. It would send a strong message to other businesses — be they from Rochester or Houston and regardless of if they deal with trash or propane — that the Finger Lakes are not interested in becoming, as one Penn Yan winery owner put it, “the garbage capital of the United States.” SNT

STOOP BAKERY CAFÉ MAKES THE FRENCH CONNECTION Yemen Tounsi had never heard of Syracuse before he responded to an ad for a bakery position here. The Frenchman, who was living in Austin, Texas, at the time, had to “put it on Google” to see where it was and make sure it wasn’t Siracusa, Sicily.

After lengthy correspondence and conversations with Eric Alderman, Tounsi was fairly sure he wanted to come to this Syracuse to help shape the Stoop Bakery Café and put it on the map. And Alderman was confident he had found the missing ingredient in his restaurant team.

“I was looking for someone special; I just never knew I would have the chance to hire someone as special as Yemen,” Alderman says now, five months after the reopening of the Stoop. “We interviewed about a dozen bakers and in the

interim we hired a pastry chef who we parted ways with four months prior to opening.

“Yemen has a boyish smile, a warm and caring personality and a strong character. We hit it off immediately and there was a fast-forming trust that we each wanted the same thing and that each of us would do whatever it took to reach our mutual goals. That has turned out to be 100 percent true.”

Tounsi came for a visit and Armory Square and downtown reminded him of a small town in Europe, especially with the Downtown Farmers Market in full swing in the summer. But the real draw was the opportunity to create an old-world bakery, entirely new to Syracuse, “from the ground up.” Under Alderman’s wing, he has created a French-style boulangerie and patisserie, with breads, pastries and viennoiserie (pronounced vyen-wahzREE) baked on the premises each day.

“I came here because of Eric,” Tounsi says, “and because I liked the idea of the project. Eric gave me the freedom to do whatever to make it work.”

The Stoop Bakery Café’s breads include classic, slim baguettes and white, multigrain, whole wheat and Jewish rye loaves with well-browned, crusty exteriors and a dense crumb inside. The signature bread is the Stoop

boule, a round loaf burnished with the restaurant’s familiar pigeon logo.

Special items include brioche, challah (Fridays only) and Tounsi’s light and crispy French-style bagels.

Viennoiserie, which originated in Vienna, are flaky pastries, like croissants, almond croissants, pain au chocolat, cinnamon rolls and cream cheese and other specialty Danish, usually enjoyed at breakfast, with coffee. One of the most popular of these items is what Tounsi has named the “Heart Attack,’’ a buttery, square-shaped croissant filled with pats of butter and rolled in brown sugar.

Savory choices include a focaccia of the day; meat- and cheese-filled quiches and croissants; and ham and cheese, and turkey, brie and cranberry sandwiches.

The dessert case features an array of “ooh la la” items that change by the day. Tarts are a house favorite and they are as beautiful to look at as they are delicious to eat. Lemon and chocolate tarts make regular appearances, while other varieties rotate in and out. You might find Key lime meringue tarts, Snickers bar-style tarts, raspberry white chocolate tarts, chocolate eclairs, caramelized pecan eclairs, choux a la creme (cream puffs) . . . the list goes on.

SYRACUSENEWTIMES.COM of the Instagram accounts @agirlandherfork22 and @315andbeyond, said in a recent post about the Stoop Kitchen. “I’ve had at least six different baked items and every one has been a work of genius, perfectly textured, flaky, perfect crumbs, the chocolate, the fillings just a-freakin’-mazing.”

Alderman says some customers come from as far as Rochester each week to pick up loaves of the Stoop Bakery Cafe’s breads and that for most guests, it’s love at first bite for Tounsi’s pastries. “Everyone recognizes right away they have never had a croissant or pain au chocolat or Danish or anything like his,” Alderman says.

The magic happens in the basement of the three-story Stoop building at 311 W. Fayette St., where Tounsi (and a baking apprentice) work each night to make sure the bread shelves and pastry cases are full when the Stoop opens for the morning rush.

Tounsi grew up in Lyon, France’s third largest city, and at age 12 started working weekends and summers in a bakery. At 16, he graduated from Lycée François Rabelais in Dardilly, France, with both baking and pastry degrees.

His dedication to his craft has led him to master baker and pastry chef positions in England, Ireland, Romania, Switzerland, Spain, Corsica, and other places. He has also managed pastry and training programs for two well-known retail groups in

In 2016, Tounsi accepted a position as master baker at Apple’s sprawling headquarters in Austin, Texas. He liked it, but desired more of a close-knit place to hang his hat and make his mark. When time allows, Tounsi likes to walk to and from work and check out downtown restaurants. He’s a fan of the pizza at Apizza Regionale (especially the patata pizza, with potatoes, caramelized onions and Gouda cheese) and the chicken wings at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. At the Stoop Bakery Café, his mission as master baker is to give customers the basics, like breads and croissants, along with a steady stream of surprises in the bakery case. “I have the freedom every day to make something new and different,” Tounsi says. “I don’t plan. I never know what I’m going to do.”

The Redhouse at City Center continues downtown’s theater renaissance

By James MacKillop There’s a new Syracuse name and location to learn: City Center, in the 400 block of South Salina Street.

That’s what we have been calling just the Redhouse at City Center: 40,000 square feet in a multimillion-dollar design by Schopfer Architects LLP, with two theaters, one up to 350 seats and the other with 125 seats, plus a studio/rehearsal room that seats up to 65. All around is lots of razzle-dazzle space, including a catering kitchen, suitable for upmarket parties and wedding receptions. And there is enough parking to accommodate every visitor.

Revamping the entire Sibley’s department store shell will run to $30 million. The Redhouse will be the prime tenant at City Center, which will eventually host many more venues, very likely a restaurant among them. Just as few could have predicted the emergence of Armory Square 30 years ago, there is no telling how the Redhouse at City Center will alter the urban landscape, or at least shift the center of gravity.

At a press tour of the site on the last day of January, the floors were covered with dust and everyone had to wear hard hats.

Redhouse executive director Samara J. Hannah said that despite appearances, everything was on schedule for the March 8 opening with Ernest Thompson’s family comedy-drama On Golden Pond.

Imported for the show is actor Fred Grandy of the ABC-TV series The Love Boat (1977-1986). Although Grandy was boyish as Gopher more than three decades ago, he has since served four terms in Congress and will turn 70 in June, making him well-seasoned for the role of crusty retired professor Norman Thayer, who dreads aging. Appearing with him for the first time is Fred’s daughter Marya Grandy, a rising Broadway and TV star.

All of this takes place in the former Sibley’s store, which opened to great fanfare in 1969 but failed to last two decades. As the current planners may not have intended, bringing show business glamour to the west side of Salina Street south of Jefferson builds on hearty precedents.

For more than 50 years, until 1967, two vaudeville-era houses graced the block, the Paramount and RKO Keith’s. Together with Loew’s State, now the Landmark, they comprised the city’s own Shubert Alley, when Salina Street also meant retail shopping. Now the question is whether the Redhouse at City Center in the same block can tap into the Armory Square buzz two blocks away.

The Redhouse takes its name from the three-story Erie Canal-era edifice at West and Fayette streets it occupied from 2004 to 2017. The company morphed from a former community

theater outfit known as Contemporary Theatre of Syracuse that had scouted different locales downtown, including a former coffee house on Clinton Street.

The facility initially looked unpromising.

No beauty, it was a former flophouse that barely escaped the wreckers’ ball. The cost was $1.4 million. Its prime advantage was the proximity to Armory Square.

As the building was transformed, it did indeed become a draw for artistic young people, and became more than a theater, offering afterschool classes and community outreach programs. SubCat Recording Studios is right next door at 214 S. West St. With successive reconfigurations of the building, the former lobby of the theater became a coffee shop and snack bar where schmoozers like to linger.

Artistic director Laura Austin was interested in music and comedy, but she was a professional actress before she became linked to Contemporary Theatre of Syracuse and was part of the troika (including Patrick O’Connor and Gerard Moses) that transmogrified that company into the Redhouse in 2004. She is also the only one of the three to stay with the company over the 14 years, playing dozens of roles and winning multiple Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) Awards. Thus, no matter what the Redhouse at City Center does, we tend to think of it as a theater first.

In January 2011, Austin brought in director and playwright Stephen Svoboda, a man of extraordinary energy, who was happy to have one large production up and running as he was simultaneously rehearsing for the next. An example of his ambition was to have two productions at the same time, as with Moisés Kaufman’s Gross Indecency and Terrence McNally’s A Man of No Importance (January-February 2015), both dealing with the subject of author Oscar Wilde. Svoboda’s standards were high, and he enjoyed continuing artistic success, such as Stephen Sondheim’s edgy Assassins (October 2012) and the outrageous Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson (October 2013).

Bit by bit the productions were also growing bigger, as Svoboda seemed determined to defy the limits of his small stage with 83 seats. Two of the most massive came toward the end of his tenure: Ragtime (May 2016), perhaps his greatest triumph, with 48 players, and the Walt Disney musical The Little Mermaid (June 2016), with 71 performers. At the box office they were the local equivalents of Hamilton: You couldn’t get tickets.

Simultaneous with the Redhouse’s artistic and popular growth, it was securing a strong financial base and attracting responsible and dedicated people to its board of trustees. Soft-spoken William “Bill” Hider, board president, had taken

the lead corralling the cash, starting out with a $1.3 million grant from the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) for renovation of the theater space, and another $1.6 million to get the Sibley’s parking garage back in shape. A consortium of local banks, including Pathfinder, M&T and NBT, were part of the action. At the press tour, Hider, although speaking in little more

than a whisper, was the man who knew all the details.

According to word of mouth, the notion for the move began as early as 2013 with Svoboda lobbying for more room, but he abruptly left the company in mid-summer 2016. Meanwhile artistic director Laura Austin is not currently a resident in Central New York for personal reasons. The Redhouse professional staff and the board make the calls.

The selection of Ernest Thompson’s 1979 play On Golden Pond appears to be an opening to wider audiences. Norman and Ethel Thayer are an upper-class couple who have summered in New England for nearly a half-century, but they see changes coming because his turning 80 is on the horizon. It is also time to reconcile with an estranged daughter.

Fred Grandy might have appeared to be a social everyman on The Love Boat, but evidence suggests he knows how the better sort talk and walk. He attended high school at the citadel of privilege, Phillips Andover Academy. A further preparation is that he was a Republican congressman from Iowa. When the Fondas, Henry and Jane, filmed On Golden Pond in 1981, they made Norman a liberal. In the original play he is conservative.

On Golden Pond was a modest hit on stage and has fared well in revivals, often with name casts, like Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews. An all-black cast featured James Earl Jones in 2005.

Another sure bet for the Redhouse at City Center will be a revival of the Harvey Fierstein-Jerry Herman smash La Cage aux Folles, slated for a May 31 opening.

FRED GRANDY’S TURN HIGHLIGHTS SMOOTH REVIVAL OF ON GOLDEN POND An unexpected loud clatter punctuates the opening scene of Ernest Thompson’s domestic comedy On Golden Pond, running through Sunday, March 18, in the brand-new Redhouse at City Center space. Querulous retired English professor Norman Thayer Jr. (Fred Grandy) is opening his summer retreat in Maine when, crack! the screen door falls off its hinges and slams on to the porch.

This caused a moment of concern for Redhouse fans during opening night: Just five weeks earlier the place was covered with grit, and you had to wear a hard hat to take a step. But no, the falling door is in the script, symbolic of Norman’s fears of decrepitude, and the entire performance is flawless, technically and artistically.

Familiar and undemanding as On Golden Pond is, it easily commands our attention. Prime, of course, is the presence of former TV star Fred Grandy in the lead.

According to reports, director Vincent J. Cardinal had connections to Grandy, and this was a vehicle the actor preferred.

If there’s a laugh to be mined in a subordinate clause, Grandy can seize upon it. Any playwright who thinks “suck face” is a worthy synonym for “kiss” will never be confused with Noel Coward, but Grandy consistently makes Thompson’s dialogue sound better than it is.

The hilarity moves Norman Thayer away from the ways he has been portrayed elsewhere, specifically Henry Fonda’s incarnation in the 1981 movie version. The bright wit draws away from Norman’s sense of uselessness at turning 80. He contemplates following a want ad to put up circulars in order to feel needed. Or his frequent mean-

ness, as this exchange with his daughter’s stepson Billy (Justin Dunn). Norman: “You should meet my father.” Billy: “Is he still alive?” Norman: “No, but you should meet him.” Such bile is coupled with some Archie Bunker-ish ethnic slurs, startling from a retired Ivy League academic.

As with the film, however, Norman’s daughter Chelsea is played by Grandy’s real-life daughter, Marya, a Yale Drama graduate with extensive professional credits. Whereas Jane and Henry Fonda had a famously prickly relationship, Marya is an ideal daughter who dedicates her performance to her parents. The on-stage parents charge that Chelsea has a chip on her shoulder, conveyed in body set rather than words. There may be some sparks, but the father-daughter reconciliation comes with relatively little pain.

There is more tension between Norman and Chelsea’s boyfriend, the divorced dentist Bill. He is played by John Bixler, the only Redhouse veteran in the cast, and is excellent as always. Bixler’s Bill stands his ground and exhibits no desire to be liked. Bixler is a veteran Equity player who works everywhere, but it is reassuring to see someone who is almost a resident player be the peer of invitees for the gala opening of the new theater.

Jan Radcliff brings extensive experience in portraying Ethel, Norman’s wife. Here she reprises her performance from Jeff Daniels’ theater near Ann Arbor, Mich., creating a lighter creature whose inner harmonies keep her younger than Norman while still retaining a deflating sting.

Michael J. Farina brings a certain degree

of pathos as well as an authentic state-ofMaine accent to Charlie the mailman, the local boy who pined for Chelsea in their youth but could not attain her.

On Golden Pond is such an intimate family drama it might have fit snugly in the Redhouse’s old Armory Square venue but gains authenticity here. Scenic designer Tim Brown, long with the company, has more than twice the space to work with, allowing for the clutter and neglect resulting from the living room’s winter absence. Characters now shout to each other from a distance, as they do in life. A flight of stairs leads to a second floor, and we can presume the pond of the title to lie outside the window. Lighting designer Marie Yokoyama leads our eye to a stuffed deer’s head above the players’ sight lines, and sound designer Anthony Vadala makes sure that no wordless gasp or sigh escapes our attention.

The new larger theater retains some of the directness of the previous venue. The audience may be farther from the action, but there is no proscenium arch, no curtain to rise or fall. We feel we are almost in their space. Seats in the new larger theater, now called the Austin-Allyn, can be reconfigured to accommodate a larger audience but now holds about 350.

The theater is named for Laura Austin, founding artistic director, and Scott Allyn of Skaneateles, who were with the Redhouse from the previous opening in 2004 and took active roles in the highly successful fundraising. From the looks of this opening production, there will be plenty of reasons to go there.

SPARK ART SPACE STARTS INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN For 20 years, Spark Contemporary Art Space has hosted music and visual art events for the community to share their creations. Now run by Jacob Roberts and Patrick Tuohey, the pair hopes to overhaul Spark by raising $60,000 through an IndieGoGo campaign that runs through March 23.

Located at 1001 E. Fayette St., Spark is on the outer edge of downtown, albeit closer to Syracuse University and Syracuse Stage. Roberts and Tuohey want to transform the venue so it can comfortably house a soundstage and an art gallery, and provide space for movement-based activities such as yoga and healing arts. They also want to bring in used books and records in a partnership with Eastwood’s Books and Melodies, as well as a café in collaboration with Brewed Awakening on Catawba Street.

“The mission statement of Spark is about trying to ignite people and get them excited and wanting to house their projects under this multifaceted space,” Tuohey says. “We want them to realize their talents. The possibilities are endless.”

Roberts and Tuohey became Spark co-owners last summer; they also took over the former Badlands music-art space in the same building. Tuohey works in music booking and promotion with After Dark Presents, and Roberts is an artist and business owner.

Spark has previously hosted a variety of art forms including avant-garde art displays, film and video events, and poetry and dance shows. The duo wants to expand the Spark footprint to keep traffic flowing.

“What’s cool about this transformation is that I coordinate events for a living,” Tuohey says. “People know they have a place to go to host pop-ups and art galleries because they have affordable spaces.

But it’s tough to run a space that runs on renting out to people.

“We’re introducing a café and used bookstore for the benefit of people who want to use the space. It’s to make sure everybody has space at the table and hopefully will make it more affordable.”

About $30,000 of the Indie GoGo money will be budgeted for construction purposes, including a mixing booth office, doors, windows, soundproofing, carpeting

and insulation. Another $23,000 is slated for studio gear including computers, cameras, mixing board, speakers, monitors and headphones. And $7,000 will go to website design, development, programming and upkeep.

Roberts emphasized the importance of the proposed movement space. “It’s an open room with mirrors,” he says. “And we’ve had belly dance classes, hoop classes, dance rehearsals, meditation. It’s a flexible space.”

The idea is that members, who join for an annual fee, can manage their own time in the space using a shared calendar.

“Hopefully, more people in the community will utilize it,” Roberts says.

The entire approach to the project also speaks to the pair’s philosophy on the DIY (do it yourself) movement.

“We’re more DIO: Do it ourselves,” Tuohey says. “The DIY mentality has put a lot of pressure on the individual. Sometimes too much. The average showgoer shouldn’t be expected to book their own shows, create a zine, write a music blog.

Everybody owes something. What’s your talent? If you want to be part of art and music, there’s a seat at the table. Work together, even if it’s one minute during the day to share an event page.”

Tuohey and Roberts hope they can eventually acquire the rest of the building and create artist apartments upstairs, thereby creating opportunities for artist residencies. “We’d love to make the

whole thing artistic,” he says, mentioning future gardens and murals outside and inside the building.

The Indie GoGo donations will also serve as a donation to the local arts community. Donors will be given gifts depending on their level of donation, ranging from VIP tickets, stickers and T-shirts. Spark is also working with the Alchemical Nursery Project, Inc., a nonprofit sponsor.

It’s clear the duo believes in Spark’s importance to the community and they want to keep it going for future generations to enjoy. “I want to express the real value of what Spark has become,” Tuohey says.

Roberts continues the idea: “Spark provides access. It’s a meet point for a mar-

ginalized community: the arts community that’s non-mainstream. It gives them a place to gather, discuss, dream. Coffee shops are tough; everyone’s on a laptop.

Bars are loud and TVs are on.

“Spark has provided a space that’s open to anyone, no questions asked. Come in.

Use this space. Reimagine it. Be together.

Love one another. It’s really beautiful. I was a student at SU’s VPA (Visual and Performing Arts program) 20 years ago and it’s really beautiful to see something like this stand the test of time. It’s something Syracuse needs. I think every neighborhood needs a Spark.”

NCAA TO SU: SHALL WE DANCE? In the spirit of this year’s NCAA Tournament selection process, let’s place the fans of the Syracuse University’s men’s basketball team into four quadrants: Quadrant 1: The fans who believed the Orange would receive one of 36 at-large berths in the NCAA Tournament.

Quadrant 2: The fans who decided they would attend the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) games at the Carrier Dome.

Quadrant 3: The fans who decided they would watch Syracuse’s NIT games on TV. Quadrant 4: The fans who decided to skip the NIT, focus on other things (Syracuse spring football, Orange lacrosse, the Crunch) and wait for the start of the next basketball season in November.

Heading into Selection Sunday March 11, the fans in Quadrant 1 were in the vast minority. But as you know by now, their faith was rewarded and the fans in all four quadrants were the big winners as the Orange was selected as the 68th and final team for the Big Dance.

Syracuse (20-13) will face Arizona State (20-11) in one of the “First Four” games on Wednesday, March 14, 9:10 p.m., in Dayton, Ohio. If Syracuse wins, it will enter the field of 64 as a No. 11 seed and face No. 6 Texas Christian University (21-11) on Friday, March 16, in Detroit.

“We’re happy to be in, happy to be playing,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said soon after the tournament field was announced. “I think there was 1 or 2 percent of our fans who thought we were going to be in.

“Nobody in here (with the media), but 1 or 2 (percent) of (the fans),” Boeheim added, laughing.

This year, the NCAA created the quadrant system to rank wins and losses, giving more credit for road and neutral court wins. Syracuse notched four Quadrant 1 wins (Buffalo, at Louisville, at Miami and Clemson), and the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee rewarded Syracuse for its difficult non-conference schedule, which was ranked 14th in the nation by the Rating Percentage Index (RPI).

Syracuse’s non-conference schedule included games against four conference champions: Kansas, Buffalo, Iona and Texas Southern. Against teams that did not receive a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Syracuse went 20-7. The Orange, understandably, finished a combined 0-6 against No. 1 Virginia, No. 1 Kansas, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 2 Duke.

Most “bracketologists” had the Orange among the first four teams out, and it appeared Syracuse would land in the NIT for a second consecutive year for just the third time in Boeheim’s 42-year tenure. So when Syracuse was announced as one of the at-large teams in the opening minutes of the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, the players celebrated in a huddle of pure joy while Boeheim stood to the side, smiling. “It was absolutely crazy,” said Orange guard Tyus Battle. “People were pushing each other over, hugging. It was amazing.”

Boeheim said. “Most years you think you’re in, or you are in, but this one being on the edge like this, it’s one of those things where everybody jumped. It’s a great feeling.”

It was the third consecutive year the Orange found itself on the tournament bubble. In 2016, the Orange received a No. 10 seed and advanced to the Final Four.

Last year, Syracuse didn’t make it and got bounced in the second round of the NIT. “Honestly, going into it I wasn’t really sure. It could have went either way,” Battle said. “But when they announced our name I was so excited. Our team worked so hard; just to get an opportunity to have a chance to do this is great.

“This team plays with so much heart,” Battle continued. “Every game, no matter the score, we just kept on playing and we were rewarded for that this year. So it’s an amazing feeling.”

Syracuse was placed in the Midwest region and faces a difficult road if it gets past Arizona State. TCU is coached by former Pittsburgh coach and Orange nemesis Jamie Dixon, and SU’s likely opponent in the second round would be No. 3 seed and national power Michigan State.

But first things first: The Orange will face an Arizona State team coached by Bobby Hurley, who led Duke to back-to-back national titles in 1991-1992 as a point guard and coached at Buffalo before moving to the Sun Devils.

Led by senior guard Tra Holder (18.4 points per game), Arizona State was ranked as high as No. 3 in the country in December after notching wins against Kansas State and NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed Xavier in the Las Vegas Invitational and then stunning then-No. 2 Kansas.

But the Sun Devils faded in Pac-12 Conference play, losing three of their last four to finish 8-10 in what was widely considered a weak conference.

But March Madness has a way of reviving struggling teams. Just last year, seventh-seeded South Carolina lost six of its final nine games before catching fire and rolling to the Final Four.

The Orange, on the other hand, recorded its biggest win of the season over No. 18 Clemson in its regular-season finale March 3 at the Dome. That win probably pushed Syracuse into the tournament — and pushed all of Orange Nation into Quadrant 1.

Le Moyne Men Advance

The Orange isn’t the only local men’s basketball team dancing this March. The Le Moyne College men advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 67-63 win over Saint Rose March 11 at Le Moyne’s Ted Grant Court.

The Dolphins (26-6), the No. 1 seed in the East Region, played No. 7 Bloomfield in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday, March 13, at Le Moyne. If the Dolphins won they will advance to next week’s Elite 8 in Sioux Falls, S.D., for the first time in program history.

SU Women Get Dance Fever

The Syracuse women’s basketball team joined the party Monday night, when it received the No. 8 seed in the Kansas City (Midwest) Region of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Orange (22-8) will face No. 9 Oklahoma State (20-10) on Saturday, March 17, 3:30 p.m., in Starkville, Miss. (ESPN2).

If Syracuse wins Saturday, it will face the winner of No. 1 Mississippi State and No. 16 Nicholls in a second-round game Monday, March 19, in Starkville.

The Orange, which is making its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and seventh under Coach Quentin Hillsman, was a No. 8 seed last year and defeated Iowa State before losing to No. 1 seed Connecticut.
