Curses, Foiled Again

Rondell Tony Chinuhuk, 32, of Anchorage, Alaska, had the pedal to the metal on Nov. 7 when he nicked a motorized shopping cart from a Safeway store in Fairbanks. But the battery-operated Mart Cart tops out at 1.9 miles per hour, so even after a 10-minute joyride, he had barely left the parking lot. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported that Chinuhuk was charged with felony second-degree theft.

Police in Sheboygan, Wisc., appealed to the public for help in late March tracking down a most unusual perpetrator. “Over the past year and a half,” the department posted on its Facebook page, “someone has been clogging the women’s toilet (at the Deland Community Center) with a 20-ounce soda bottle. This is very strange, and gross.” The Sheboygan Press reported that the string of more than 25 incidents began in 2016. Joe Kerlin, the city’s parks and forestry superintendent, says the suspect is likely an adult male, based on security camera footage from outside the restroom. The city’s resulting plumbing bills have totaled between $2,000 and $3,000.

A man playing with a baseball on the roof of a parking structure in Honolulu on March 23 had to be rescued by firefighters after he fell into the space between two buildings and got stuck, KHON-Channel 2 reported. Security guard Ray Rodrigues was dispatched to the roof to run the 55-year-old off, but found the man had fallen into a 7- to 9-inch-wide space between the cement walls. When pulling him out with a rope failed, firefighters

two had been separated after Patricia lost custody of her young kids, but when they resumed contact a few years ago, Patricia told investigators, “they hit it off.” KFOR reported that Patricia also married one of her sons in 2008, but two years later that marriage was annulled.

Another son reported to KSWO-TV that Patricia tried to start an inappropriate relationship with him, but he shut her down. About a week after an 11-year-old boy scraped his elbow while playing in a tidal pool on a California beach, pediatricians treating him for the resulting abscess removed a small, hard object and were surprised to discover a live checkered periwinkle marine snail, according to United Press International. Dr. Albert Khait and his colleagues at Loma Linda University wrote in BMJ Case Reports that a snail’s egg had apparently become embedded in the boy’s skin when he scraped it. The mollusk later hatched inside the abscess.

Dr. Khait said the boy took the snail home as a pet, but it did not survive living outside its former home.

SHOCK AND EWWW AT HORROR FEST Gore, giggles and Gerrit Graham are on the menu of marathon mayhem during the 13th annual Salt City Horror Fest, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St. An unsettling octet of demented treats will unwind in old-school 35mm prints, accompanied by several celebrities who have connections to the movies that will be presented. The daylong blowout puts its best fest foot forward with the 11 a.m. screening of 1933’s King Kong. A screaming Fay Wray fends off the leading man’s attempts involving monkey business in this alltime classic.

Things go immediately downhill, however, with the 12:50 p.m. showing of The Manson Massacre, a sleazy, no-budget 1971 exploitationer that didn’t surface locally until its August 1976 premieres at the former Penn Can Mall Cinemas and Lakeshore Drive-In. Since every dog has its day, expect this bowwow to pop up again next year when director Quentin Tarantino’s cinematic take on the Charles Manson saga will be released.

Gerrit Graham takes center stage to chat about his lengthy career at 1:55 p.m., followed at 2:35 p.m. with his performance in the title role of C.H.U.D. 2: Bud the Chud (1989), directed by David Irving, who will also be on hand at the showing.

The afternoon concludes with the 4:35

p.m. screening of Creepshow 2 (1987), notable for the final screen appearance of sarong queen Dorothy Lamour.

Following a 6 p.m. VIP dinner with the fest guests (admission is an extra $30 and seating is limited) will be the 6:45 p.m. showing of Phantom of the Paradise (1974), director Brian DePalma’s inspired musical that merges Faust with Phantom of the Opera. The record-biz satire was a box-office bust yet has earned a deserved cult following, especially with composer Paul Williams’ great score and Gerrit Graham’s manic turn as an Alice Cooper-styled fop rocker named Beef.

At 8:25 p.m., guest Denise Crosby will regale the fest crowd with tales from her career on TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation, followed by the 8:55 p.m. screening of 1989’s Pet Sematary, one of the better Stephen King movie adaptations.

As the evening winds down, Carey Eidel will take time from his day job as executive director of the Auburn Public Theater to chat about his career as an actor at 10:45 p.m. Eidel’s 1984 cult flick C.H.U.D., which means “cannibalistic humanoid underground dweller,” will unspool at 11 p.m. in an uncut version.

FEDS STEP IN TO ADDRESS FACEBOOK’S GROWING PAINS

One of the defining trademarks in the chronicle of the American economy is companies or industries that spawn, grow, grow too big and then become subject to government regulation.

We’ve seen it many times before.

After transforming the way we lived and worked, the oil and railroad industries of the late 19th century met their own respective matches with antitrust laws and new regulatory oversight.

While we are very much a country seated in free market capitalism, those actions we took at the time were a simple case of the law catching up with the technological changes of the time, in order to better protect consumers.

Now it’s Facebook that needs regulating, as it is the newest global phenomenon that has transformed the way we

live — from how we run our businesses, to how we get our news, to how we share recipes.

The social media giant has been under fire in recent weeks after it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a British political data firm connected to President Donald Trump’s campaign, had accessed and improperly stored personal information from as many as 87 million Facebook users as a way to influence how they voted in the last federal election. Among other things, the data firm was able to collect information on people’s locations, their Facebook friends and content they had “liked,” and they did so without users’ knowledge or permission.

The data breach has outraged Facebook users and privacy advocates. It led to CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifying on

This is hardly the first time that Facebook has faced criticism over handling users’ privacy. In 2011, the social network was caught deceiving people about the extent to which their personal information was being shared. Just last week, a judge ruled that Facebook will have to face a class action lawsuit that accuses the company of using facial recognition technology on photos without user permission.

User data is the central part of Zuckerberg’s business model, and the company has in recent years taken initiatives to better protect privacy. But a $500 billion company that has 2.2 billion users worldwide cannot just police itself. These serious data breaches make it clear that Congress needs to initiate some form of government oversight.

That’s something the European Union is already doing. Its General Data Protection Regulation, which will make companies financially liable when they’re negligent in protecting private data, will go into effect at the end of May. But how do you go about this in the United States? How do you rein in the most successful pioneer of the digital frontier? How do you regulate such an expansive media empire?

Well, that actually introduces the first question: Is Facebook considered a media company? One would think so, since you can share life updates, photos, videos and articles on it, and 45 percent of American adults use it as their main source of news.

Zuckerberg testified, however, that it is “a tech company.” That’s a good overture for how long and dreadfully complicated

the process of regulating Facebook will be. It will not, and should not, be rushed or taken lightly.

Here’s a good place to start: Require better transparency regarding the political advertisements that Facebook sells, and that we see on our newsfeed. Since Facebook’s recent fallout is tied in part to Russian meddling in the 2016 election, as well as sharing fake news associated with the election, this seems like a logical approach.

Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law the “Democracy Protection Act,” which requires political ads placed on Facebook, as well as Twitter and Google, to disclose who paid for those ads, just like TV and radio outlets have had to do for a long time. Those same social media platforms will also be barred from selling ads to foreign entities.

The move is good for New York, and uses the same premise as the Honest Ads Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation currently being proposed in the U.S. Senate.

With the midterm elections just around the corner, that bill should be given priority in the next few months.

That’s just the beginning. We’ll have to spend more time exploring the different regulations that Facebook should follow to ensure it respects and protects our information going forward.

And that’s OK. We didn’t learn how to regulate oil companies or railroads overnight either. But the principle we applied to those industries at the time is the same one we’re doing now. Just as our government back then adjusted to an ever-growing industrial economy, we must now do the same with a digital one. SNT

he tall windows at 208 W. Water St. are papered over for two reasons. First, the home of new restaurant Defi Cuisine Corp. is under construction, with the goal of an early May opening. Second, chefs Cody Dedischew and Nicholas Salvetti want to keep the restaurant under wraps for a big reveal.

“The windows are covered up with paper because we want what’s inside to be a surprise,” says Dedischew. “That’s kind of important to us. We can’t wait to show the place off.”

For months, Dedischew, 28, and Salvetti, 35, have been on-site, overseeing details large and small. A concrete floor

is in and was scheduled to be polished last week. Walls are up, waiting for paint, lighting and artwork, and a large hood has been hung in the area that will house the open kitchen.

The reclaimed wood that is the foundation of the long bar was salvaged from an 1870s barn near Camillus. That’s an

important tie-in, the chefs say, to the local-focused restaurant they have planned, with an emphasis on produce, meat and dairy sourced in Central New York.

Their local purveyors, so far, include Main Street Farms, Cortland; Grindstone Farm, Pulaski; Fresh Herbs of Fabius; and Morehead Cattle Co., Jamesville.

Paint colors, in earth tones that invite guests to relax and linger, have been selected, as have tables, china and glassware. Salvetti and Dedischew have been meeting with potential cooks, servers and bar staff and have their fingers crossed for a tentative May 2 soft opening.

Questions they are often asked: What is “Defi” and “Why Defi?” Defi (pronounced de-fee) is a French word that means challenge. The chefs say they chose that name because they have taken on the challenge of opening a restaurant and want to challenge themselves in the kitchen. They also want to challenge the way we, as diners, think about food and dining out, creating an experience that begins with breaking down the walls that often separate restaurant kitchens and dining rooms.

The 2,200-square-foot restaurant in the Amos Building, across from Clinton Square, will include approximately 20

seats at the bar and 20 more at tables, all with a view of the kitchen. The restaurant will be open Mondays through Fridays for lunch and Wednesdays through Saturdays for dinner. The restaurant will be closed Sundays, so staff members have a day to spend with their families.

Monday and Tuesday evenings will be reserved for special events, like multicourse seasonal dinners and wine dinners.

There will be no table service for lunch.

Food will be prepared to order and served in compostable containers. Guests can eat in or get their food to go.

A key feature of the dinner menu is “defi,” an offering that gives guests elements of surprise and challenges the chefs to create customized, four-course meals based on the likes and tastes of the diner and what is available in the kitchen on a given night. Dedischew and Salvetti say the menu will change often and include nightly specials. Entrees on the inaugural menu, already posted online, include beef, seafood, duck, rabbit, chicken and a local grain and vegetable risotto.

The restaurant is a dream for both chefs, who met while working at the Crowne Plaza Syracuse. Dedischew, a native of Michigan, graduated from Johnson & Wales University and came to Syracuse to

earn his MBA in hospitality administration/management at the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University.

He previously served as executive chef at the Crowne Plaza and executive sous chef at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown.

Salvetti grew up in Central New York and is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. His resume includes stints at restaurants, resorts, casinos, colleges and on cruise ships. He also served as executive chef at the Crowne Plaza. Both are board members of the American Culinary Federation, Syracuse chapter.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do for the last 15 years,” Salvetti says. “We both got into this for the love of cooking and the love of food.”

“To meet someone with the same ideas and same vision for a restaurant, the same passion for food: What are the odds of that?” Dedischew says. “You have a better chance of being struck by lightning.”

Ramblin’ Man Bluegrass broadcaster Bill Knowlton still adores the Appalachian sound

In 1973 Richard Nixon was president; Spiro Agnew, his vice president, resigned under duress; U.S. troops were withdrawn from Vietnam; the Watergate hearings began; Roe v. Wade went to the Supreme Court; hip-hop and hand-held cell phones first appeared.

In Syracuse Lee Alexander was the mayor, Jim Boeheim was an assistant basketball coach at Syracuse University, gas was 40 cents a gallon, and Bluegrass Ramble, Bill Knowlton’s radio show, debuted on WCNY-FM 91.3.

Although much has changed since then, Knowlton’s broadcast — currently airing Sundays from 9 p.m. to midnight — endures, now in its 46th year. As notable as that may seem, Knowlton’s experience as a broadcaster of bluegrass music began in 1959 when he was a student at Fordham University. He launched New York City’s first all-bluegrass radio show, Bluegrass Ramble, on WFUV-FM, the university station.

Later the program moved to WBZY in Torrington, Conn.

Originally from New York City, Knowlton has established himself over the years as an internationally recognized figure in the world of both bluegrass and the earlier “oldtime country music” genre, as a broadcaster, emcee at bluegrass events, authority and historian.

This recognition includes awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association (Broadcaster of the Year, 1997; Distinguished Achievement Award, 2011); the Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys) (Hall of Fame, 2006); the Syracuse Press Club (Lifetime

Achievement Award, 1994); the Cultural Resources Council (Service to the Arts Award, 1983); and the Jesse Messick Award, for emceeing the Uncle Dave Macon Days in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1992.

A retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, Knowlton, 79, is also an authority on the life and career of Uncle Dave Macon, a star of the Grand Ole Opry and an early old-time country music icon, and has written liner notes for a collection of Macon’s music.

Knowlton is also a familiar presence at bluegrass festivals, having hosted hundreds of events throughout New York and the Northeast.

His own event, the Bluegrass Ramble Picnic, is the oldest bluegrass festival in the northeastern United States, staged locally every August since 1973. The next picnic is slated for Aug. 5 in Dwyer Memorial Park, beside Little York Lake in Preble.

Additionally, Knowlton has produced and emceed 52 half-hour Bluegrass Ramble TV shows for WCNY and the Eastern Educational Television Network, two 60-minute documentaries on the Bluegrass Ramble Picnic, and the annual Barn Dance radio broadcast with six local bands and a live audience. Knowlton has also emceed the IBMA Fanfest in Louisville and Nashville and participated in the efforts to save the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville’s venerated country music venue, in the mid-1970s.

Knowlton recently sat down with the Syracuse New Times at the studios of WCNY for an interview.

You became interested in country music in the 1950s, didn’t you?

This was pre-Bill Haley and the Comets.

Joni James, Jo Stafford, Frankie Laine, they covered songs from mainstream country artists such as Hank Williams and Carl Smith. I had no idea about country or hillbilly music until I heard a disc jockey play the original version of “Jambalaya” by a hillbilly singer named Hank Williams. I was astounded by that sound; I had never heard it before. Then I discovered Don Larkin, a disc jockey in Newark, N.J., who played hillbilly music three hours a day.

At the same time you must have encountered Bill Haley and the other rockers. Did you ever feel out of step?

Of course. I was totally out of step. Out of 6,000 students at my high school I could identify on one hand students who liked hillbilly music. We found a takeout with a jukebox with two hillbilly songs and we played those.

Tell me about your Bluegrass Ramble radio program at Fordham University.

I started it as a senior. It was on for a half-hour once a week. When I left it went with me to Connecticut. I got a job at WBZY as a typical disc jockey.

On my own, without pay, I did another hour called Bluegrass Ramble on Sunday afternoons.

Bluegrass Ramble now features oldtime country music and bluegrass.

What’s the difference?

Old-time country music is to bluegrass what ragtime is to Dixieland. The string band music was the basic old-time fiddle tunes, ballads and novelties with guitar, bass and the clawhammer (strum with a pick) banjo. Tremendous stuff. The string band recordings from the 1920s are off the top, with people like Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers, Uncle Dave Macon, Charlie Poole, the North Carolina Ramblers.

Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys were a wonderful old-time string band, with the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bass.

Bill was looking for a new sound out of old-time music. Then he was introduced backstage at the Grand Ole Opry (the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville) to a banjo picker named Earl Scruggs. Scruggs basically auditioned for him there. This was 1945. Lester Flatt was already with Bill Monroe. Flatt said, “I think you ought to hire him, Bill.” This turned his band into an entirely different sound of string band music, with the three-finger style of banjo Scruggs popularized.

Bill had an ego a mile long. Other people started copying Monroe’s style with this new three-finger banjo style, which infuriated Monroe. People started saying, “You sound like Bill Monroe’s band. You pick bluegrass.” So the name came from Monroe’s band, not the state (Kentucky).

Bluegrass is essentially Appalachian music, arising out of hardship, isn’t it?

Bluegrass is Appalachian music. Radio

took it out of Appalachia to every place in the United States: WWVA in Wheeling, W.V., WSM in Nashville, WCKY in Cincinnati. These stations blasted it into New England, where they heard the Osborne Brothers, Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys.

A lot of these people were Appalachian.

They had teeth. There was hardship and suffering, such as losing the farm. These are themes going back to the 1930s and the Depression. They did go through the same things we go through in our lives, but we don’t write songs about it. This is what I love about bluegrass: There are dozens of topics. We’re not just zeroed in on love and sex; there’s a whole lifestyle to be sung about in bluegrass music.

There are distinctive vocal and instrumental styles in bluegrass, aren’t there?

There are many different styles of people (singers) in bluegrass, not just the

high lonesome sound, which was really Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. Baritone is accepted now. Stanley’s singing of “O Death” in (the 2000 movie) O Brother, Where Art Thou, you talk about the high lonesome sound. You freeze when you hear that.

Is there an orthodoxy in bluegrass?

Did Bill Monroe set the rules?

Oh yeah. What is bluegrass anyway?

A battle between the traditionalists and the progressives. You’ve got people who want to electrify and add drums. This has been going on since the 1960s and 1970s with newgrass. In bluegrass the mandolin is supposed to be the percussion. I don’t play Elvis’ version of (Bill Monroe’s) “Blue Moon of Kentucky” because it’s electric.

I don’t mean that everybody has to play “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” There are still new songs being written in the original styles. But I notice that the ones that

push the envelope over the table don’t last that long. I don’t want to be a moldy fig, but people want to hear bluegrass, not country pop.

Gospel music is about one-quarter to one-third of bluegrass. It’s optimistic. It’s still the five basic instruments (guitar, bass, fiddle, mandolin, banjo). And the dobro, Flatt and Scruggs introduced that instrument. It’s a resonator guitar. Dobro is a registered trademark, made by Gibson, I think.

You started Bluegrass Ramble at WCNY in 1973. How did that come about?

In 1972 I was stationed in the NORAD region (Syracuse) as an Air Force public affairs officer. I started volunteering at WCNY. It was an eclectic station at that time: jazz, classical, talk. I got a 15-minute segment on the nostalgia show All Our Yesterdays called “The Dusty Record Show” and played old 78 rpm records.

There was a variety show called Today’s Music Tonight. The program manager wanted to fire the disc jockey. I was convenient to him so he put me on playing bluegrass from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. I did it live the first couple of years. It went to 9 p.m. to midnight when WCNY went all-classical.

Those recordings were vinyl LPs at the time, weren’t they?

Oh yes. I played my own collection and promotional copies from record companies. When bluegrass was dropped by the major labels, including Decca, Columbia and MGM, the bluegrass people formed their own labels and did very well with them. I still have maybe 1,000 LPs; they’re all over the house.

At the same time (1973) you started the Bluegrass Ramble Picnic. How did that happen?

When I started the show I began noticing that there were bluegrassers in the area and at Syracuse University that didn’t know that the others existed. It was like coming out of a closet. My show became a sort of bulletin board. I thought, “We ought to have a picnic and get together.” One night three guys in VFW hats came in and offered their property if they could get the revenue from the beer and food they sell. That was the first one, at the VFW in Hannibal.

Over the years it got much too big. It was turning into a Woodstock, and 90 percent of the people were not there for the music. I said, “The hell with this!” Then I restarted it at the fairgrounds in Seneca Falls. Then we went into a paid mode, hired bands and charged admission. We had co-sponsors but no upfront money.

Then it was a three-day affair.

After the last sponsor pulled out we went back to the way it was in 1973: one day, nobody gets paid, and that’s what I’ve done ever since, down at Dwyer Memorial Park in Little York. But my

It’s getting to be another damn job.

How has your show changed over the last 46 years?

Not much. I have a formula as to a fast one, a slow one, an instrumental, an oldtime song. I pre-plan. I put it all together here at WCNY on Thursday afternoon.

It’s just like a live radio show; I do the whole three hours. I get promotional CDs and CDs from players at bluegrass festivals. I’m like Jackson Pollock: I just start throwing this one in this half-hour and this one in that half-hour.

Why don’t you segue songs on your program?

I’m the old-fashioned big mouth. Between

Who are some of the original bluegrass musicians that you have met?

Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Bill Clifton, the Osborne Brothers, Jimmy Martin, Ralph Stanley. I’m turning 80 in October. I was in the right place at the right time. I wish I’d been born earlier so I could have met Uncle Dave Macon.

were happy about it at first, but we’re very close.

What’s so interesting about Macon to you?

The showmanship, his exuberance.

He was a 19th-century man in the 20th century. He was the biggest star of the Grand Ole Opry until Roy Acuff. A total character. He made 155 recordings but we only have a 90-second clip of him in the 1940 movie Grand Ole Opry.

You’re widely regarded as an authority on bluegrass music. Is there anyone that knows more about bluegrass than Bill Knowlton?

Oh, my god, yes. There are those known for their articles for the bluegrass bible, Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. The most authoritative person on old-time music was the late Charles Wolfe.

You have been recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) as a broadcaster and with an Outstanding Achievement Award.

The name Bill Knowlton is on their website along with Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs and others. How does that make you feel?

That really floored me. It’s one unit away from the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.

They make it a point to give that award to not-so-famous people.

What does it take to be a bluegrass musician?

You need a total respect for the basics of bluegrass music. And you have to have a little bit of initiative and creativity to bring your own persona to what it is. You see that in jam sessions.

Did you ever play an instrument?

I used to strum the guitar. I like to be like Ed Sullivan, the guy in the middle who knows a lot about the acts. My role

as an emcee is how I participate. I have a hell of a lot of fun with that.

I’m known for having the world’s worst collection of pants. For many years I had a quilter who made them, such as plaids that would stand up by themselves if I took the batteries out. I will continue to dazzle in my sartorial style.

Did you ever fantasize about being a bluegrass musician?

I have fantasized about being at the Ryman Auditorium. I would love to go there and create a 1939 Grand Ole Opry. There are plenty of young people that can play old-time music. I’m also sorry that I never took up the clawhammer banjo.

What is the place of bluegrass in today’s culture?

It’s a niche that has survived in spite of the odds. Right now it’s being helped by being streamed on the internet. I’ve told people bluegrass was born in 1945 and it’s been dying ever since. It’s an anachronism.

You have been involved with bluegrass music for more than 60 years.

How does that sit on you?

I’m delighted. This station (WCNY) has been incredible. I’ve been grandfathered.

Bluegrass is foreground music, like classical. Over the years we’ve had a preponderance of great bluegrass musicians here. The No. 1 we’re famous for is Tony Trischka. Our bluegrass associations and festivals are how we preserve bluegrass music. We’re a thorn in the side of mainstream country music. It always amused us that the big-time country artists feel compelled to make a bluegrass album.

What do you see in the future for the Bluegrass Ramble?

It would be a lot of fun to get to 50 (years on the air). I would be 84 then. SNT

LANDSCAPES AND LYNCHINGS OFFER PERSPECTIVE FOR ARTRAGE SHOW

eith Morris Washington’s paintings approach American landscapes from a very different perspective. The works don’t focus on soft skies or calm waters or communicate a sense of tranquility. Instead, the paintings provide a context for Washington’s exploration of lynchings, which he describes as a ritual of human sacrifice. Within Our Gates: Site and Memory in the American Landscape, an exhibit of six large artworks, is on display at the ArtRage Gallery.

The paintings began with Washington doing research and then taking photos of sites, including a swamp near Yazoo City, Miss., on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyo., on a rural road near Columbia, Tenn.

In the instance of Yazoo City, Willie Minnifield was seized by a mob and burned at the stake; his attackers escaped any punishment. The Laramie incident, meanwhile, was one in which three people badly beat Matthew Shepard and tied him to a fence. He died six days later from his injuries. In the third incident, a mob tortured Cordie Cheek, hanged him and desecrated his body.

All of these paintings concentrate on landscapes. They don’t depict mobs or

someone hanging from a tree. And yet Washington directly engages with past and present. On one hand, he discusses events like the murder of Minnified in 1923 and the killing of Shepard in 1998.

On the other, he argues that we can’t expunge memories of ritual violence or wipe away the need for communities across the United States to address grim aspects of their histories.

The paintings he creates with oil and acrylic on linen play with mood, color and perspective. In a work portraying a location near Hattiesberg, Miss., Washington uses purple and red colors to express brooding, and depicts tall, tall trees extending from the bottom of the

canvas to its top. This work references the shooting of R.J. Tyrone, an African American, by a white merchant.

That piece isn’t a prototype for the series. For the site near Laramie, the artist employs earth colors, waves of brown and orange, communicating a sense of the West. In the foreground, a cross stands on a pile of rocks, while buildings appear in the distant background.

When Washington painted the junction of routes 50 and 50A near Columbia, Tenn., he utilized yet another approach.

Here he contrasts a drab view of a road, sky and treetop with a bunch of lush green trees. They are seen in a frame isolating them from the rest of the painting; that’s a technique used successfully in several of the artist’s works.

Each painting is accompanied by text discussing an incident and providing horrific details. However, no dates are supplied. The artist wanted to avoid emphasizing the murders as events somehow lodged in the past.

Washington states that he’s very much concerned with present-day consciousness of lynchings, with a pattern of repressed memories and denial of the consequences of ritual terror. According to the artist, that situation will continue until our society fully confronts the phenomenon of lynchings.

In addition, his statement references the use of lynchings to enforce a system of racial segregation in the South; the vast majority of those murdered were African Americans. Yet Washington states that “females, and European Americans are not exempt.” Indeed, several historians have documented events like the New Orleans massacre of 1891, which took place after the murder of police chief David Hennessey. A mob broke into the city jail and lynched 17 Italian immigrants, none of whom was convicted of a crime.

While Within Our Gates clearly has its own identity, it also links to a larger discussion of lynchings. In recent years, communities ranging from Memphis, Tenn., to Duluth, Minn., have put up memorials commemorating people who were lynched. On Thursday, April 26, the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Ala., will open the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, dedicated to more than 4,400 victims of lynchings.

Washington’s exhibit continues through May 19 at ArtRage, 505 Hawley Ave. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Fridays, 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. ArtRage will also host a talk
