More wheels, more laws. HEAVY HITTER TIP OF THE WEEK: Crashes linking to an 18 wheeler, tractor trailer, delivery truck, or other large vehicle involve more complex laws and regulations. They are simply handled differently than an average wreck. That being said, even if you have been in an accident before, an 18 wheeler wreck may change the whole process for you. In addition, your injuries are more likely to be serious. You will need an attorney that is well-versed in that area of law.

NEWS WEIRD By Chuck Shepherd

Try, Try Again

Samuel West announced in April that his Museum of Failure will open in Helsingborg, Sweden, in June, to commemorate innovation missteps that might serve as inspiration for future successes. Among the initial exhibits: coffee-infused Coca-Cola; the Bic “For Her” pen, because women’s handwriting needs are surely unique; the Twitter Peek, a 2009 device that does nothing except send and receive tweets, and with a screen only 25 characters wide; and Harley-Davidson’s 1990s line of colognes, in retrospect as appealing, said West, as “oil and gas fumes.” West’s is only the latest attempt to immortalize failure with a “museum.” Previous attempts, such as those in 2007 and 2014, apparently failed.

The Apenheul primate park in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, is engaged in a four-year experiment, offering female orangutans an iPad loaded with photos of male orangutans now housed at zoos around the world, with the females able to express interest or disinterest, similar to swiping right or left on the human dating app Tinder. Researchers admit results have been mixed, that some males have to be returned home, and once, a female handed the iPad with a potential suitor showing, merely crushed the tablet.

Latest Human Rights

In March, star soccer goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes de Souza signed a two-year contract to play for Brazil’s Boa Esporte club while he awaits the outcome of his appealed conviction for the 2010 murder of his girlfriend. (He had also fed her body to his dogs.) He had been sentenced to 22 years in prison, but was released by a judge after seven, based on the judge’s exasperation at the years-long delays in appeals in Brazil’s sluggish legal system.

Ways to Go

A 42-year-old man choked to death on April 2 at a Voodoo Doughnut shop in Denver as he accepted the store’s “TexAss Challenge” to eat a half-pounder, the equivalent of six regular doughnuts, in 80 seconds. Later the same day, in Fairfield, Connecticut, a 21-year-old college student died, three days after collapsing, choking, at a pancake-eating contest at the Sacred Heart University student center.

Insufficient Remorse

In February, in a Wayne County, Mich., court during sentencing for a DUI driver who had killed a man and severely injured his fiancee, Judge Qiana Lillard kicked the driver’s mother out of the courtroom for laughing at the victim’s sister who was tearfully addressing the judge. Lillard sentenced the mother to 93 days for contempt, but later reduced it to one day.

4

Mating Strategies

Drunken Distractions

A 23-year-old Albuquerque woman performed cartwheels instead of a standard field sobriety test at a DUI stop in February, but she did poorly and was charged anyway. On the other hand, student Blayk Puckett, stopped by University of Central Arkansas police, helped shield himself from a DUI by juggling for the officer.

Fine Points of the Law

Police and prosecutors in Williamsburg, Va., are absolutely certain that Oswaldo Martinez raped and killed a teenage girl

in 2005, but, although he was quickly arrested, they have — 12 years later — not even put him on trial. Martinez, then 33, is still apparently, genuinely (i.e., not faking) deaf, illiterate and almost mute. Besides that, the undocumented Salvadoran immigrant has such limited intelligence that test after test has shown him incapable of understanding his legal rights, and therefore “incompetent” to stand trial. Police made multiple “slam dunk” findings of Martinez’s DNA on the victim’s body and also linked Martinez via a store camera to the very bottle of juice left at the crime scene.

Judgment Error

In March, jurors in Norfolk, Va., found Allen Cochran, 49, not guilty of attempted shoplifting, but he was nowhere to be seen when the verdict was announced. Apparently predicting doom, since he had also been charged with fleeing court during a previous case, he once again skipped out. The jury then re-retired to the jury room, found him guilty on the earlier count and sentenced him to the five-year maximum. Because of time already served, he could have walked away legally if he hadn’t walked away illegally.

Government in Action

In May, a new restaurant-disclosure regulation mandated by the Affordable Care Act is scheduled to kick in, requiring eateries, except small chains and independents, to post calorie counts for all menu items including “variations” — which a Domino’s Pizza executive said meant, for his company, “34 million” calorie listings. The executive called the regulation, for the pizza industry, “a 20th-century approach to a 21st-century question,” since for many establishments, orders increasingly arrive online or by phone.

REFUGEE MARCH CALLS ATTENTION TO ETHNIC DIVERSITY A quiet, peaceful march on Sunday, May 7, highlighted a unified message in an ethnically and religiously diverse Syracuse neighborhood: Refugees live here and refugees are welcome here. “We recognize that refugees have built our country and will continue to build our country,” said Beth Broadway, executive director of InterFaith Works of Central New York, at the start of a 1.8-mile procession in solidarity with refugees. InterFaith Works and Catholic Charities, which each settle about 700 refugees a year in Syracuse, hosted the event. “We live in a climate where we are hearing a lot of fear-mongering,” Broadway said. “This march says ‘No’ to all of that and says ‘Yes’ to a climate of dignity, a climate of trust, a climate of understanding and caring for one another.” She invited refugees to lead the North Side walk and “be surrounded by neighbors.” The event was more somber than recent local rallies and marches protesting rhetoric and policies of the Trump administration. During the 90-minute walk, participants chatted quietly, introducing themselves in numerous languages. Refugees waved to people in homes and businesses along the walk. Toward the end of the walk, as people were crossing Butternut Street, a motorist yelled, “Get out of here.” The North Side was once home to mainly Catholic and Protestant churches. The refugee procession reflected the community’s growing religious diversity, with participants including several Christian congregations, Jews, Quakers, Sikhs, Buddhists and Muslims. 5.10.17 - 5.16.17 | syracusenewtimes.com

Walkers passed longstanding Italian bakeries as well as newer neighborhood additions: an Asian grocery store and a halal shop, which sells food that adheres to Islamic law. During the procession, walkers made four stops: the Syracuse Nepali Church (the former Friedens United Church of Christ) at 1501 Lodi St.; a Nepali/Burmese worship site at North McBride and East Division streets; the Franciscan Church of the Assumption at 800 N. Salina St.; and Masjid Isa Ibn Maryam (the former Holy Trinity Church) at 501 Park St. At both Assumption and the Nepali church, leaders shared prayers and told people they were welcome to visit the churches. Masjid Isa Ibn Maryam (Mosque of Jesus the Son of Mary) operates in the former Holy Trinity building, which the Syracuse Diocese closed as a Catholic parish in 2010. That congregation highlights the local and national shift from predominantly white, Christian communities to more diverse communities including people of color and many immigrants from Muslim-majority countries. At the mosque, Yusuf Soule translated (from Arabic) the Fatihah, the first chapter of the Quran and the most common prayer in Islam. “I seek refuge with God from Satan, the outcast,” he said. “All praise and thanks to God. Lead us to the straight path.” After the prayer, Soule said, “The masjid is open to you anytime.” SNT Renée K. Gadoua is a freelance writer and editor. Follow her on Twitter @ReneeKGadoua.

THINGS THAT MATTER By Luke Parsnow

CUOMO PUTS ETHICS REFORM ON BACK BURNER AGAIN

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s critics like to call him “King Cuomo” for his perceived tendency to overreach in state policy. Take that as you will. But when it comes to the throne of concrete ethics reform, this king has abdicated. Just five months ago, Cuomo was keen to push ethics reform. In laying out an ethics package in January, he said, “We have been doing historic work at the state level — the government is doing more than ever before — but imagine what we could do if we had the complete confidence of the people. If we had that confidence, there is nothing we couldn’t do, and I am not going to stop until I get there.” So why is he stopping? We see this charade every single year. The governor makes a lot of noise about the need for

ethics reform, then when budget time comes around, he shrugs his shoulders afterward with the “I’ve done all I can do” look and shakes his finger at the state Legislature. Never mind that 40 state officials have been accused or convicted of corruption since 2000. Never mind that the two lead-

ers of the Legislature, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, were both sentenced last year on corruption charges. Never mind that nine of Cuomo’s own aides are preparing for trial on charges of bribery and bid-rigging in connection with the governor’s economic development proj-

ects. And never mind that a November poll found 97 percent of New Yorkers considered combating public corruption a top priority. Sorry, everyone, Cuomo has apparently moved on. That’s disappointing for a governor who claimed he’d be the champion to clean up Albany in his first campaign in 2010. But it’s not surprising, either, because he keeps going about it the wrong way. Cuomo can’t seem to understand that in order for a cleaner government in this state to exist, he must lead the charge. To do so, he needs to know when it’s best to be involved and when it’s best to step back. Incredibly, he has been successful at neither. Cuomo gives us the impression that his proposals can’t get through the Legislature. Yet we know he can actually flex his political muscles and get them to follow along if he wants something badly enough. He was able to push through the controversial SAFE (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement) Act, using a late-night “message of necessity” with no hearings, no testimony and no time for opponents to make a case against it. Many people thought Cuomo’s plan for a $15 minimum wage could never get past Senate Republicans or that no one could agree on a paid family leave program. This year he got his prized free tuition plan through, the go-ahead for Uber upstate and approval to raise the age of those who can be tried in adult court from 16 to 18, just as he asked. And despite an outcry from the Legislature about Cuomo’s budget giving the executive too much power, they still approved a lot of it, including giving Cuomo more authority on the state budgeting process itself. Yes, it’s the Legislature that must pass ethics reform in the end, but that hardly means Cuomo is a benchwarmer until then. And it’s not that Cuomo shouldn’t be given credit for trying. His proposals provide sound remedies, like putting restrictions on outside income for lawmakers, initiating term limits and closing the LLC (limited liability company) loophole. But each year he makes clear where his priorities lie. After saying ethics will be his main concern, it instead becomes Uber

or the Raise the Age initiative and ethics gets kicked down the road once again. If Cuomo really wanted reform, he would actually make it a priority. If he really wanted it as badly as he says, he’d make use of his leverage over the Legislature to make it happen. This never seems to be the case. Where the governor is involved in cleaning up Albany is just as troubling and ineffective. He created the “independent” Joint Commission on Public Ethics in 2011 to oversee government. Yet all of its members are decided by leaders in the Legislature and the governor himself. The current executive director, Seth H. Agata, is the third person to hold that position, and the third person in that position who was previously a top aide to — guess who — Gov. Cuomo. Although not legally wrong, the appointment of government insiders by government insiders makes the commission by no means independent. Then there’s the infamous Moreland Commission, another “independent” group created by Cuomo in 2013 that would investigate possible corruption in Albany. That commission existed for only a few months because Cuomo had it shut down when his office discovered the commission was investigating him. “It’s my commission. My subpoena power, my Moreland Commission,” he told Crain’s New York Business. “I can appoint it, I can disband it. I appoint you, I can un-appoint you tomorrow. So,

interference? It’s my commission. I can’t ‘interfere’ with it, because it is mine. It is controlled by me.” Now Cuomo opposes legislation that would let the state comptroller examine state contracts before his administration can approve them. But Cuomo wants to use his proposal, which creates new inspectors general and special prosecutors. Guess who would appoint those prosecutors? Cuomo. For whatever reason, Cuomo cannot comprehend the meaning of “independence” or that actual independent committees or individuals would fare better at fighting corruption. If Cuomo re-strategized how he approached the ethics reform roadblock, using a heavy hand but also knowing when to keep his hands off, he might actually get needed legislation passed and be the champion to clean up Albany he keeps promising he will be. But he “doesn’t see that happening.” He’s essentially given up, which means that he is satisfied with the watered-down proposals that have already been passed that will do little, while it’s only a matter of time before another state official’s arrest makes headlines. Well, we’re not satisfied. So neither should he be. SNT

Spring is here. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming and food trucks are popping up in and around Syracuse. A large gathering of trucks from the region will roll into the New York State Fairgrounds in Geddes on Saturday, May 13, for the second annual Syracuse Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival. The event, scheduled for noon to 6 p.m., is hosted by Food Truck Festivals of America. Advance sale tickets are $5, or $10 at the gate. VIP tickets ($20 advance; $25 at the gate) give ticketholders access to the food trucks from 11 a.m. to noon, before the event officially starts. Janet Prensky, a partner and public relations specialist with Aigner/Prensky Marketing Group, said in an email that more than 8,000 people attended the first Syracuse Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival at the fairgrounds last year, and that about 35 food trucks are taking part this year. Most are from the Syracuse-Central New York region, Rochester and the Finger Lakes. The trucks will offer a wide range of food: barbecue, grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, Mediterranean cuisine, Tex-Mex fare and more, including ice cream and desserts. Participants familiar to Central New York food truck fans include Byblos, Birdsong Café, Café 119, Cruisin’ Cones, Lady Bug Lunch Box, Mo’s Pit Barbecue, Ponchito’s Chuck Wagon, Shattuck’s Paddy Wagon, the Salt City Food Truck, That’s What’s Up, the Chicken Bandit Food Truck and Eatery, Toss ’n’ Fire Wood-Fired Pizza, The Cremeria and others. Ithaca-area favorite the Silo Food Truck, which won top honors from judges at the State Fair Food Truck Competition in 2016, will be there as well. Participating New York-based breweries include Middle Ages Brewing Company, Brewery Ommegang, Southern Tier Brewing Company, Brooklyn Brewery, Coney Island Brewery, Bronx Brewery, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company and others.

He was walking home from work at 1:30 a.m. on the city’s North Side when he was hit by driver Peter Rauch, an investigator for the Onondaga County district attorney’s office. Rauch fled the scene, with Collier left in the street with fatal injuries until being taken to Upstate University Hospital. He died March 23 after being taken off life support. Rauch was fired from his job and has been arraigned on a felony charge. The event left the surviving family with many bills, as well as the emotional weight of losing a child. But musicians are gathering to help. On Thursday, May 18, 6:30 p.m., six bands will perform during a fundraising benefit for Collier’s family at the Lost Horizon, 5863 Thompson Road. Advance tickets are $15, available at the Sound Garden in Armory Square or tinyurl.com/ sirenscuse. Tickets are also $18 at the door. For more information, visit thelosthorizon.com. Patrick Tuohey, head of Nonzerosum Presents, has been mounting shows in Syracuse since 2015, but feels especially motivated with this one. “I personally didn’t know (Collier),” he said, “but there are other people who are part of this event who were deeply affected. I can’t take any credit saying I was so close; that’s not the case. But I am here to help out all of my friends who lost their friend.” Musician Brandon Tredo brought the idea to Tuohey, who was already planning the May 18 show. “When I was speaking with Brandon about how to approach this, it was definitely clear he (Seth) was a fan of the metal music that would be going on,” Tuohey said. “It made sense to do this. If it was someone who wouldn’t normally attend these shows, there’d be hesitation. But it made sense to do this for a person who was into the music.” The lineup includes So This Is How It Ends, Turn the Tide, Se-

crets Kept, Terrorbyte, Born A New and Sirens and Sailors, a list that spans all forms of the metal genre. Born A New is from New Jersey, So This is How It Ends is local and Sirens and Sailors is a national touring act from Rochester. Terrorbyte has also been making waves in the area by wearing masks and playing on their anonymity. “They have an awesome stage presence,” Tuohey noted. Although the cause will never be far from attendees’ minds, Tuohey is adamant about not sensationalizing the event. “I don’t want people to treat it differently,” he said. “I want them to have a good time, like they would at any metal show at the Lost Horizon.

Live it up and have fun, although we will have this reverence in mind for what the cause is about.” He’s also passionate about communicating how metal musicians came together where they saw a need. “The weight is on us as underdogs in the community,” he said. “It’s (metal), not weird, obscene music. It’s just another genre that has its place in Syracuse.” Tuohey generally produces several events every month that span Celtic music to metal, all with one common thread: community. “The biggest thing is the ability to put different types of people together in a room that get a natural high from building community” he said. “The three keys (to promoting) are cash, culture and community, and the most important is the community-building aspect. It’s about interacting with each other in a room. Music is the best vehicle to do that.” Tuohey started as a musician and transitioned into the booking side. When he started planning the May 18 show, the initial goal was to bring Sirens and Sailors to Syracuse. Other bands quickly lined up for the evening’s cause, with proceeds from ticket sales now going to the family, along with more funds generated from raffles during the concert. “The family wasn’t expecting this,” Tuohey said. “Anything we can come up with will be of significance. And the fact that we have the community there in support, it’s not about sensationalism here, it’s about the portion of Syracuse’s music community, its metal community, stepping up and doing something for a cause.” SNT

LAURA LAVINE The lone GOP Republican mayoral candidate takes the voters to school By Walt Shepperd

Laura Lavine has taught, administered, supervised and pathologised students from preschool to graduate level. She guided creation of the Virtual School @ Liverpool, the first public school-based program of its kind in New York state. As superintendent of the LaFayette Central School District, she increased the district’s undesignated fund balance to the maximum allowed and added more cash to its reserves. Perhaps more significant to her were the increased literacy and graduation rates she oversaw. To Lavine, graduation rates are more than money in the bank. They are determining factors for safety and security in school, quality of life in neighborhoods, ultimately even the crime rate. As the only Republican mayoral candidate for the city of Syracuse to emerge so far alongside a bevy of Democrats, Lavine calls for celebration of such high points as the current downtown development, but cautions for the need to assess their sustainability. Her basic contention is that if the quality of the city schools can’t be demonstrably enhanced, the literacy and graduation rate indicators significantly increased, there may be little hope for a total assault on the city’s urban ills. Like most of her potential rivals, she has not held

public office. Yet her experience as a contact for Neighborhood Watch and committee work on issues of youth, especially homeless and runaway, should provide some useful perspective. What is your job description for Syracuse mayor? The job description is that of a leader. Syracuse needs leadership. Syracuse needs an administrator. It needs a manager. But it needs somebody who will lead the turnaround. We’ve been in a state of decline for years. The quality of life in our neighborhoods has deteriorated over the years. Our schools aren’t safe. Our graduation rate is unacceptable, although it has inched up and we do want to celebrate some success. But 60 percent is unacceptable. We just had a record number of homicides in 2016. Thirty people died on our streets. We have the highest concentration of poverty among blacks and Hispanics of any city our size in the United States. The Brookings Institution just ranked Syracuse 100th out of 100 metropolitan areas in terms of economic growth. I have lived in the city of Syracuse my entire life. I’ve been in the same house for 57 years. I’m the third generation in my house. My neighborhood has changed

dramatically over the years, most evident by the number of children. When I was growing up on DeWitt Road there must have been 50 children on our street. Now we have no school-age children on our street. We have a few young families who are just starting to have some children, but for years we’ve had no school-age children on our street. And the reason for that is that people do not want to send their children to the Syracuse City School District. The mayor needs to be a leader. That’s the job description. Should we metropolitanize the city and county governments? We should be cooperating. Consolidation is a loaded word, but the word cooperation is one I think everybody understands. And as a school leader for 30 years, that’s what I’ve been doing. As a school superintendent that’s what I do. I cooperate with school board members, with students and their families, with teachers, with unions and bargaining units, with community members who don’t have children in the schools. We cooperate. We find ways to capitalize on what’s working well, and how to find ways to improve what isn’t working well. So cooperation is the name of the game for a school superintendent. Being able to get along with everybody.

Not picking fights. Not finding ways to put roadblocks in the way of progress and improvement. That’s what we should be doing between city and county. We’ve seen some improvements. For instance, the zoo used to be operated by the city; now it’s operated by the county. There are a lot of opportunities for improvement, but not at the expense of city government. We don’t want to do anything too abrupt. We need some consensus on the part of the city residents as to how they want to be governed. But there’s certainly room for improvement in the areas of cooperation, looking for cost efficiencies. In my school district when I became superintendent, our school was on the state comptroller’s fiscal stress list. We are now off the list. We have also stopped taking money out of reserves and found ways to generate revenue, finding cost efficiencies such that we’re now putting money back into reserves. And we’ve done that while we’ve increased literacy rates, increased graduation rates, and increased safety and security in our school district. So by being analytical, by being collaborative, coordinating and cooperating with all the stakeholders, you can make things better, even if there isn’t more money coming in. Should we consolidate the city schools with those in the county?

There are many states in the country that have countywide school districts. They’ve operated like that for decades. It’s not something we do in New York state. New York state has approximately 733 individual school districts. An argument could be made that we don’t need 733 school districts. But as it relates to Syracuse and the surrounding suburbs, the issue will be nobody is going to be interested in engaging in that conversation with us until the quality of our schools improves. And by saying “improves,” I mean the schools have to be safer and our graduation rates have to improve. And the way to improve graduation rates is to improve literacy rates. What should we do with Route 81? If the viaduct comes down, we need some type of a hybrid. The people in the surrounding areas have all united on this topic. We need something that keeps the North-South traffic corridor operating. We have too many businesses that will suffer if we don’t do some type of a hybrid, and when I say hybrid I’m talking about a combination of a community grid and some type of a tunnel or depressed highway. Otherwise, we’re going to have a lot more traffic, including trucks sort of being just dumped into the city streets. The trucks are not going to want to come through here and stop at all these traffic

lights, so you know they’re going to be rerouted around the towns and villages, and the supervisors and the heads of towns and villages don’t want all of that traffic coming through their municipalities. They’ve been sent back to the drawing board. We’re waiting to see the results of the next study. At the same time we need to know the exact numbers in terms of the costs of that project. Billions of dollars are spent downstate. So to spend a few more up here to give us what we want for a solution that needs to last for 70 years is worth taking more time to take a look at much more closely. What needs to be developed in the center city, who should be doing it and who should be paying for it? We’re seeing some development in our downtown, which is great. Again, all victories and successes should be celebrated. The one thing to be mindful of with that type of development is whether or not it can sustain itself. So we’re seeing a lot of young people; millenials are taking advantage of this development downtown. But we’re already seeing in some other areas that market is softening. Rents are starting to come down a little bit where this kind of development has already taken place. The question is: What’s going to happen when those millenials decide to start families and say, “We’re leaving the city

because we want a better school district”? Aside from that, we also need to be mindful of the quality of life in our neighborhoods, which a lot of our residents feel has deteriorated. Our neighborhoods are not safe. So we can’t develop downtown at the expense of our neighborhoods. We need to pay attention to our neighborhoods, their unique attributes, and make sure they are safe and secure and that their basic needs are being met. Syracuse has the poorest communities of color in the country. As mayor, what could you do? There are a lot of solutions. There are a lot of anti-poverty programs out there. It’s just a question of going out and looking for them and finding the money for them. But for me the issue, again, comes back to graduation rates. If we are graduating more of our students, they are less likely to lead a life of crime. We know that there’s a relationship, if not causal, there is a direct correlation between dropping out of high school and being incarcerated, having health problems, having child development delays. So all of these things are multilayered, they’re all connected. None of these issues exist in a vacuum. So the real issue is improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods, improving the quality of the schools. That will lead to a diminished rate of crime and help families move out of poverty. SNT

HIGH TIMES WITH PROPULSIVE PETER PAN PREQUEL

R

ick Elice’s Peter and the Starcatcher, running through May 20 as a Baldwinsville Theatre Guild production, is related to Peter Pan somewhat the way the Stephen Schwartz musical Wicked is related to The Wizard of Oz. Both are prequels explaining the origin of details of well-known stories retold in different genres. This time we learn how the pirate in the red coat gets his hand replaced with a hook. Both shows are also based on bestsellers, and here’s where the great difference lies. Gregory Maguire’s Wicked, aimed at adult readers, is frequently meditative and gloomy, if ironic. But this Peter derives from a series of children’s books by Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry, the latter one of America’s premiere humorists. In more than two hours of rollicking action, Peter and the Starcatcher never goes more than a few moments without provoking laughter. A second great difference is music. Even though Peter credits a score composed by Wayne Barker, this is more of a spoken word than a singing show. Colin Keating lists himself as both director and music director, and he leads an ensemble of two, himself and percussionist Jennifer Vacanti. Much of the time the two of them are chiming in with sound effects to heighten a scene. What music there is, however, can stop the show, such as the everyone-in-bras (women and men) “Mermaid” number on Mollusk Island. Credit costumers Jodi Wilson

and Karen Palinkas with filling the empty bras with found objects like apples and clocks. Action begins on a bare stage with performers filing in before becoming characters: “I will play a sailor,” or a “Lost boy,” or whatever. Voices ask us to think of dreaming, adventuring, growing, and to imagine the British Empire. A Union Jack unfurls, and with the snap of someone’s fingers, a light goes on and we are transported to a thriving harbor, where we meet officious Lord Aster (Rich Bocek), his precocious daughter Molly (Clare Lopez) and her nanny, Mrs. Bumbrake (Josh Harris). Although Harris speaks in a falsetto, this is not really a drag role. The actor’s trousers are clearly visible below his apron, and what passes for a wig looks like a crimped doily pinned atop his head. We learn of two identical sea chests. One is filled with the Queen’s treasures, which Aster will accompany on the Wasp, the fastest ship in the fleet, helmed by reliable Captain Scott (Dan Southcott), to the kingdom of Rundoon. The other is a decoy

filled with sand and to be carried aboard the rickety Neverland, captained by the suspicious-looking Bill Slank (Casey Callaghan). In a moment of pandemonium, Slank marks the Queen’s trunk with a chalked X and switches the assigned ships. Short-handed, Slank buys three orphans — plump Ted (Ben Borenstein), tall Prentiss (Evan Biedermann) and resourceful Peter (Ryan Sparkes) — from Grempkin (Seth Kennedy), the schoolmaster of the Lost Boys. Their fate is unknown, perhaps to serve the king of Rundoon, and no one seems to care, prompting Peter to shout that he hates all grown-ups. As the Neverland is pursuing a safer if slower route to Rundoon, Lord Aster and Molly join it. Aster reveals secrets to Molly in Dodo, a language comprehensible only to them and the extinct bird. He places an amulet around his and Molly’s throats. She must touch it if ever she is in trouble. Molly is also an apprentice Starcatcher. People gain this rank through appointment from the Queen and are commissioned to protect starstuff and deposit it inside the world’s hottest volcano, which is in Rundoon. Also aboard are seaman Smee (Josh Taylor) and a crew of pirates headed by the red-coated blusterer Black Stache (Matt Gordon). Stache sets out to dominate the action with verbal pyrotechnics, including glorious malapropisms such as “No man is an archipelago!” Director Colin Keating does not run many shows, but he has a proven eye for quality and talent. Clare Lopez, just arrived in town, makes for a saucy, spunky Molly. Ryan Sparkes, a recent Crane School of Music graduate, evokes Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker as Peter. And as Black Stache, Matt Gordon bids to become not just a starcatcher but an actual star. SNT

SONGS GALORE IN STYLISH KURT WEILL MUSICAL TRIBUTE

L

egendary Lotte Lenya, the great composer Kurt Weill’s widow, once opined: “There is no German Weill, and no American Weill. There is no difference. There is only Weill.”

Well, you could have fooled me. It hardly seems possible that the same person who wrote the murderous “Mack the Knife” also wrote the lovesick “September Song,” and 12 years apart—but also an ocean apart. So it’s quite a journey through a brief but immensely prolific career in the aptly titled Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill: A Musical Voyage, running through Saturday, May 13, as the season finale from the Syracuse University Drama Department. Taking a cue from the subtitle, director David Lowenstein and scenic designer Sofia Zavala have constructed the abstract impression of a ship whose decks and gangplanks readily lend themselves to other purposes. That voyage begins in gritty, depressed Weimar Berlin, the same setting (no coincidence) as in Kander and Ebb’ s Cabaret. Costumer Jessica Crawford puts the entire cast in drab proletarian duds. And it ends in the bright pastels of post-Depression America, where Weill and Lenya took up residence in luxury hotels, keeping company with successful artists and show people. Quite apart from containing so many diverse and excellent musical numbers, Berlin to Broadway is an extravagant vehicle for letting student performers strut their stuff. Talk about range and variety. In the

original 1974 production, rarely revived, four players took all the numbers. Lowenstein has extended that number to 10. So in the first act we get Gabrielle Samuels overflowing with weltschmerz in “Barbara Song,” and then teamed in the second act with Matthew Steriti in “Moon-Faced, Starry-Eyed.” These are eye-rubbing moments. And it makes one grateful that SU Drama now includes mug shots next to performer profiles in the playbill. Berlin to Broadway is entertainment, not a lecture, but with so many musical numbers it cannot resist linking the bitter, radical Weill of the 1920s with the celebratory, often smiling composer of the 1940s and 1950s. American popular culture came roaring into Europe right after World War I, unmistakably influencing Weill. His German orchestration includes not only a guitar but also the banjo. The early Weill wrote mock American tunes, like the world-weary “Alabama Song.” His collaboration with Bertolt Brecht included the 1929 musical comedy Happy End, based on the stories of Damon Runyon more than 20 years before Guys and Dolls. Similarly, Weill did not throw his social conscience overboard when sailing to New York City. He was

what right-wingers of today call an SJW, a social justice warrior. Despite the highstyle Broadway successes of Lady in the Dark (1941), the first musical about psychoanalysis, and One Touch of Venus (1944), a satire on art schools, the composer’s heart was with the oppressed and suffering. His first American opera, Street Scene, adapted Elmer Rice’s realistic portrayal of tenement life. And his last opera, Lost in the Stars, was based on Alan Paton’s novel of apartheid South Africa, Cry the Beloved Country. At the time of the acclaimed Glimmerglass Opera revival in 2012, several commentators suggested that more than 60 years after the composer’s death, Lost in the Stars might rank as Weill’s greatest work. In the current production Markcus Blair sings the title number while seated in a plain wooden chair on a bare set, delivering the music’s power unaugmented by production distractions. Blair has also been assigned a gooseflesh-inducing rendition of “Mack the Knife,” surely Weill’s best-known number, from The Three Penny Opera. What the structure of the show and Lowenstein’s direction are underscoring is that Weill was a profound artist every decade of his life. All 10 cast members achieve peak moments where they dominate the stage, and it is churlish to rank one ahead of another. Some songs simply present stronger opportunities. Maxwell Anderson’s lyrics for “September Song,” from Knickerbocker Holiday, are arguably the best in any Weill number, allowing Andrew Ryan a glowing, memorable moment. Similarly, the always clever Ogden Nash penned the words for “Speak Low,” another of the best of the Broadway numbers, originally intended for fellow German exile Marlene Dietrich. Here the quartet of Matthew Steriti, Sondrine Bontemps, Gabrielle Samuels and Tucker Breder plumb the deepest emotion. Then again, there’s an advantage with songs most of the audience has forgotten. Zofia Weretka stops the show twice, with “Pirate Jenny” from Three Penny, and the naughty “Saga of Jenny,” about the choices a girl has to make, from Lady in the Dark. Music director Brian Cimmet and his six-player ensemble, always visible in appropriate costume, remind us why Kurt Weill’s critical esteem has deservedly been on the rise. SNT

DANCE-FEVERED TOURING MOTOWN SHOW BOASTS LOCAL CONNECTION The soulful Motown: The Musical will be the final production of the 2016-2017 season of Famous Artists/NAC Entertainment’s Broadway in Syracuse series. The jukebox musical offers a quasi-biography of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy and the array of musicians who recorded with his label. The show begins its run on Tuesday, May 16, 7:30 p.m., at the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St. Other performances are Wednesday, May 17, and Thursday, May 18, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 19, 8 p.m.; Saturday, May 20, 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, May 21, 1 and 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which range from $31 to $95, are available through ticketmaster.com or the Landmark’s box office, (315) 475-7979. Two Motown performers have ties to Central New York. Portraying Smokey Robinson will be David Kaverman, an Ohio native, who was featured in two Redhouse Arts Center productions, Dreamgirls and Carousel. Syracuse New Times drama critic James McKillop praised Kaverman’s portrayal as Billy Bigelow in the latter performance. Taking on the role of Florence Ballard from The Supremes is Gabriella Whiting, 22, a 2012 graduate of Skaneateles High School. She now resides in Manhattan and is taking on various musical-related roles. Whiting’s last name may also ring a bell with Syracuse music fans: She is the niece of local rocker Joe Whiting. “I grew up with it,” she remarked about her lineage. “He was the uncle who was an active musician. I never thought twice about it.” She recalled growing up and listening to her uncle’s musicmaking. “A couple years ago, I was able to perform with him around Christmas,” she said. “If the right situation came up, I’d perform with him again.” The two performers were on their Grand Rapids leg of the national tour when they chatted with the Syracuse New Times. Is this your first time on a national tour?

Gabriella Whiting: I worked on a Norwegian cruise ship back in 2013, for Legally Blonde: The Musical. That was my first traveling production. I’ve worked at a variety of different regional theaters across the country. David Kaverman: I worked for Disney Cruiselines. They have really big ships, so it was hard to tell that you were out on the water. Except when there were storms, because the boat would rock. Do you prefer to be on land or out at sea? Gabriella: It’s definitely different. On a cruise ship, you’re secluded from society. It’s its own little bubble. When on land, there is a little bit of a bubble, but you’re touring the United States. It’s much easier to make phone calls. I couldn’t call my mom while I was on a ship. David: When you’re on the boat, you’re limited with communication. For six months at a time, you don’t set foot on land at night. When you’re performing out at sea, you can settle in your room for the night. With Motown, you’re picking up and traveling every week. It’s a little tedious, but it keeps it fresh. Do your parents continue to attend shows? Gabriella: My mom has come a couple times already. I’m sure she’ll come to our shows in Syracuse. She’s seen me perform in almost every single show I’ve done. Does that make you nervous if family and friends attend a homecoming show? Gabriella: It’s not too nerve-wracking. For me, especially performing at the Landmark, there are so many people in the audience. It would be more nerve-wracking if I could see all their faces. David: They saw the show in Detroit. Since I’m from Ohio, it is the closest place for them to travel to. It doesn’t make me nervous, but I want to do a good job. They’re not very good critics; they like everything I do. You have to be careful with how you pace yourself. It’s great to have family and friends visit, and you want to hang out with them,

Talk about your roles a little bit. How’s it to be representing these icons? Gabriella: I’m playing Florence Ballard, who was one of the original members of The Supremes. I’m also playing Suzanne de Passe, who was Berry Gordy’s artistic director. It’s a huge responsibility. Many of these people are still alive and are coming by to see the shows. We want to do them justice. It’s a great feeling and an opportunity to represent a piece of music and pop culture history. David: It wasn’t intimidating in the beginning. The only surreal moment I had was when we opened in Los Angeles, because Smokey Robinson was there. I think with any role, you want to do a good job. They’re real people. Luckily, I wasn’t the first person to portray Robinson, so he’s seen some actors portray him. He was very complimentary after the show. Once I got his approval, I felt better. Were you familiar with the music? Gabriella: When I was growing up, my mom would play a lot of the music. The thing about Motown music, whether you’re conscious of it or not, you recognize the songs. It’s funny, going out into restaurants, stores or other places, how often the music is played. David: Consciously and unconsciously. Motown music plays everywhere: movies, elevators, lobbies, television shows. I knew a lot of the songs, but not much as far as the story goes. It’s been great to learn the history of the label. How did you get involved with Motown: The Musical? Gabriella: It was actually a really quick process for me, which is shocking. I was able to get an audition, went in, sang and danced. Two days later, I heard that I got the role. I’d never seen the show before, but I researched and got very familiar with the show. Are you excited to perform on the Landmark stage? Gabriella: I’m really excited. I grew up performing all types of dance, and ballet was one of them. The last time I performed there, it was for the Moscow Ballet. I was 8 years old. It’s been a while. David: I’ve gone past it, but I, unfortunately, never had a chance to check out any shows. When I was there, there really wasn’t a dark period in between shows (at the Redhouse).

Did you grow up playing instruments? Gabriella: No, I was primarily in chorus throughout school. David: I was really involved in high school. The arts were my jam. I was in orchestra, choir and band. Plus, I had a lot of traveling experiences through those. In college, I played in the pit orchestras, but I always wanted to be one of the actors. In college, that’s when I made that decision. How do you see arts programs at local schools and in professional spectrums growing? Gabriella: When I was in high school we had a really good drama program. Since then, it’s seemed to get bigger and bigger. It’s great to see kids express themselves through theater, music and art that may not have been available to them before. Professionally, the opportunities are there. However, there are a lot more people trying to make it. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of other people trying to do the same thing as you. David: I went to a public school, and we had a lot of arts programming. Luckily, many of the arts are showcased on television, like Glee, Dancing with the Stars and

So You Think You Can Dance. When schools don’t offer these opportunities, people will look toward their surrounding communities. The Redhouse has their education fellowship program, where they’re taking the arts to a lot of the schools in the area, and teaching through that. This gave me hope for the city that’s strengthening their education program. I definitely think children are getting exposed to the arts at an early age. It’s increasing, but we have to make sure it continues. David, on your website it says you are easily bribed with a gallon of ice cream. What ice cream? David: There aren’t any flavors I don’t like, except maybe rum raisin. Everything else I’m game for. It’s kind of bad, because I’ll eat it every day. Gabriella, are you as easily swayed by ice cream? Gabriella: (Laughs.) I’m more of a frozen yogurt gal. But I’m easily swayed by cheese pizza. Do you have any pre- or post-show superstitions?

Gabriella: I don’t really have any superstitions, but I do like to get everywhere super-early. It’s just something I do. David: I always have Altoids, because I’m paranoid that I’ll have bad breath. So I’ll have them on me before and during the show. I also don’t eat after the show; I’ll go to the hot tub to unwind. I’ll eat during intermission. What are you excited most about during your return to Central New York? Gabriella: Since I grew up in Skaneateles, I’m excited for the lake. David: Syracuse is my home away from home. My contracts with the Redhouse were about two months or so, and we stayed downtown. Everyone I met in Syracuse was so nice, and the city impressed me because I’d never been there before. I made a lot of friends there. When I was performing with Dreamgirls, we had local high school students in the show. It’s great to show them the business and that with working hard and following your passions, things can work out. I’m excited for them to see the show, to meet up and talk with them. SNT

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: MEGAN MCCARTHY

Megan McCarthy, All Times Publishing’s Employee of the Month, has not been with the company for even a year, but she’s already had a big impact. Megan was hired in September as a sales and marketing coordinator. That means she spends a lot of time supporting advertising representatives for the Syracuse New Times, Family Times and Welding & Gases Today, the company’s three publications. Megan checks the classified ads weekly to make sure they appear correctly in the New Times. Similarly, she ensures that all Family Times advertisements are recorded and published. She also has a project for Gases and Welding Distributors Association (GAWDA) Media. And she is managing the

CNY Tix ticketing service, prospecting for companies to use the platform and explain it to the uninitiated. Coworkers wrote: “Megan is an extremely positive employee! She is reliable, dependable and willing to pitch in and help wherever and whenever needed! She gets the job done.” In addition, one wrote, “She can always be counted on to represent all companies with integrity!” Megan herself appreciates the varied nature of her job. “There is no day that is just like the previous,” she wrote. “I strangely like the chaos that comes with the position; being involved with the different publications I’m able to juggle different assignments and no task is exactly like the other.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) “Kiss the flame

and it is yours,” teased the poet Thomas Lux. What do you think he was hinting at? It’s a metaphorical statement, of course. You wouldn’t want to literally thrust your lips and tongue into a fire. But according to my reading of the astrological omens, you might benefit from exploring its meanings. Where to begin? May I suggest you visualize making out with the steady burn at the top of a candle? My sources tell me that doing so at this particular moment in your evolution will help kindle a new source of heat and light in your deep self -- a fresh fount of glowing power that will burn sweet and strong like a miniature sun.

which Zoo Jeans are manufactured is unusual. First, workers wrap and secure sheets of denim around car tires or big rubber balls, and take their raw creations to the Kamine Zoo in Hitachi City, Japan. There the denim-swaddled objects are thrown into pits where tigers or lions live. As the beasts roughhouse with their toys, they rip holes in the cloth. Later, the material is retrieved and used to sew the jeans. Might this story prove inspirational for you in the coming weeks? I suspect it will. Here’s one possibility: You could arrange for something wild to play a role in shaping an influence you will have an intimate connection with.

you

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Your symbol of power during the next three weeks is a key. Visualize it. What picture pops into your imagination? Is it a bejeweled golden key like what might be used to access an old treasure chest? Is it a rustic key for a garden gate or an oversized key for an ornate door? Is it a more modern thing that locks and unlocks car doors with radio waves? Whatever you choose, Gemini, I suggest you enshrine it in as an inspirational image in the back of your mind. Just assume that it will subtly inspire and empower you to find the metaphorical “door” that leads to the next chapter of your life story.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Will sex be humdrum and predictable in the coming weeks? No! On the contrary. Your interest in wandering out to the frontiers of erotic play could rise quite high. You may be animated and experimental in your approach to intimate communion, whether it’s with another person or with yourself. Need any suggestions? Check out the “butterflies-in-flight” position or the “spinning wheel of roses” maneuver. Try the “hum-andchuckle kissing dare” or the “churning radiance while riding the rain cloud” move. Or just invent your own variations and give them funny names that add to the adventure. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Right now the word “simplicity” is irrelevant. You’ve got silky profundities to play with, slippery complications to relish, and lyrical labyrinths to wander around in. I hope you use these opportunities to tap into more of your subterranean powers. From what I can discern, your deep dark intelligence is ready to provide you with a host of fresh clues about who you really are and where you need to go. P.S.: You can become better friends with the shadows without compromising your relationship to the light. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can bake your shoes in the oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, but that won’t turn them into loaves of bread. Know what I’m saying, Sagittarius? Just because a chicken has wings doesn’t mean it can fly over the rainbow. Catch my drift? You’ll never create a silk purse out of dental floss and dead leaves. That’s why I offer you the following advice: In the next two weeks, do your best to avoid paper tigers, red herrings, fool’s gold, fake news, Trojan horses, straw men, pink elephants, convincing pretenders and invisible bridges. There will be a reward if you do: close encounters with shockingly beautiful honesty and authenticity that will be among your most useful blessings of 2017.

reveal yourself in your full glory. For once in your life, you have cosmic clearance to ask for everything you want without apology. This is the LATER you have been saving yourself for. Here comes the reward for the hard work you’ve been doing that no one has completely appreciated. If the universe has any prohibitions or inhibitions to impose, I don’t know what they are. If old karma has been preventing the influx of special dispensations and helpful X-factors, I suspect that old karma has at least temporarily been neutralized.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Of all the signs of the zodiac, you Capricorns are the least likely to believe in mythical utopias like Camelot or El Dorado or Shambhala. You tend to be uber-skeptical about the existence of legendary vanished riches like the last Russian czar’s Fabergé eggs or King John’s crown jewels. And yet if wonderlands and treasures like those really do exist, I’m betting that some may soon be discovered by Capricorn explorers. Are there unaccounted-for masterpieces by Georgia O’Keeffe buried in a basement somewhere? Is the score of a lost Mozart symphony tucked away in a seedy antique store? I predict that your tribe will specialize in unearthing forgotten valuables, homing in on secret miracles and locating missing mother lodes.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) “I don’t want to be at

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) According to

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You are free to

the mercy of my emotions,” said Irish writer Oscar Wilde. “I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them.” In my opinion, that may be one of the most radical vows ever formulated. Is it even possible for us human beings to gracefully manage our unruly flow of feelings? What you do in the coming weeks could provide evidence that the answer to that question might be yes. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you are now in a position to learn more about this high art than ever before.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Africa’s highest mountain is Mount Kilimanjaro. Although it’s near the equator, its peak is covered year-round with glaciers. In 2001, scientists predicted that global warming would melt them all by 2015. But that hasn’t happened. The ice cap is still receding slowly. It could endure for a while, even though it will eventually disappear. Let’s borrow this scenario as a metaphor for your use, Virgo. First, consider the possibility that a certain thaw in your personal sphere isn’t unfolding as quickly as you anticipated. Second, ruminate on the likelihood that it will, however, ultimately come to pass. Third, adjust your plans accordingly.

my lyrical analysis of the astrological omens, here are examples of the kinds of experiences you might encounter in the next 21 days: 1. interludes that reawaken memories of the first time you fell in love; 2. people who act like helpful, moon-drunk angels just in the nick of time; 3. healing music or provocative art that stirs a secret part of you -- a sweet spot you had barely been aware of; 4. an urge arising in your curious heart to speak the words, “I invite lost and exiled beauty back into my life.”

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Ex-baseball

player Eric DuBose was pulled over by Florida cops who spotted him driving his car erratically. They required him to submit to a few tests, hoping to determine whether he had consumed too much alcohol. “Can you recite the alphabet?” they asked. “I’m from the great state of Alabama,” DuBose replied, “and they have a different alphabet there.” I suggest, Pisces, that you try similar gambits whenever you find yourself in odd interludes or tricky transitions during the coming days -- which I suspect will happen more than usual. Answer the questions you want to answer rather than the ones you’re asked, for example. Make jokes that change the subject. Use the powers of distraction and postponement. You’ll need extra slack, so seize it!
