Curses, Foiled Again

KTAR News in Phoenix reported that Peoria Police Department officers were called to a gas station Feb. 23 in response to a shoplifting incident. When they arrived, suspects Marwan Al Ebadi, 28, and Salma Hourieh, 29, set off on foot before hopping over a fence — directly into a secured parking lot of the Peoria Police Department. Hourieh tried to hide beneath a bench outside the station, while Al Ebadi jumped back over the fence and was stopped in the street. Both were arrested and charged with shoplifting. “You should never run from the police,” said police spokesman Brandon Sheffert, “and if you do, do not run into a secure parking lot of a police station.”

A new golf course at The Retreat & Links at Silvies Valley Ranch in Seneca, Ore., will take “the golf experience to a new level” in 2018, owner Scott Campbell announced in early February to the website Golf WRX. This summer, golfers will be offered goat caddies to carry clubs, drinks, balls and tees on the resort’s short seven-hole challenge course, McVeigh’s Gauntlet. “We’ve been developing an unprecedented caddie training program with our head caddie, Bruce LeGoat,” Campbell went on, adding that the professionally trained American Range goats will “work for peanuts.” (Rim shot.)

Unhappy Ending

The Carelse family of Lakewood, Col., picked up some groceries at the Walmart in Littleton on March 5, including a box of Quaker 100 Percent Natural Granola with oats, honey and raisins. When they sat down for breakfast the next morning, they told KMGH-TV, Anthea Carelse noticed that the “best by” date on the box was Feb. 22, 1997 — more than 21 years ago. Her husband, Josiah, ate his full bowl and didn’t suffer any unpleasant consequences, but Anthea stopped after two bites. Josiah planned to return the box to Walmart.

Linda Fein and her husband thought they had found their dream home in Paradise Valley, near Phoenix. They offered $1.8 million for the house and 1.3-acre lot, but then found out the house belonged to Kevin and Sandra Otterson and was the setting for their pornography website, Wifey’s World, founded in 1998. “I just can’t make Thanksgiving dinner on counters where a porn star has been lounging around,” Fein told the Arizona Republic.

In late February, the couple rescinded their offer on the four-bedroom home.

“I certainly believe there are people out there who wouldn’t care about the house being used for those purposes,” Fein explained. “I’m just not one of them.”

Litigious Society

Neldin Molina of Denver is dragging Hamburger Mary’s restaurant in Tampa, Fla., to court with a $1.5 million lawsuit alleging she was injured there by a drag queen’s breasts. According to WESHTV, Molina was visiting the restaurant in May 2015 with friends and family when a drag show began. Molina said drag queen Amanda D’Hod pointed at her and began to approach her, but Molina turned her back to signal she didn’t want to participate in the show. The suit, filed in early March, alleges that D’Hod then walked in front of Molina, grabbed her head and shook it, pounding it violently against the performer’s fake breasts. The complaint said Molina began to experience headaches and neck pain and later went to the emergency room at Memorial Hospital of Tampa. The lawsuit also notes the restaurant failed to notify patrons of possible danger from the drag show.

When the city gets to be too much for Jo and Lonnie Harrison of Houston, they escape to their pre-fab vacation cabin, nestled on a 10-acre plot in Madisonville, Texas. Having last visited the property in November, Lonnie set out on Feb. 2 to check on it. But when he arrived, he told KTRK-TV, “I didn’t see the house.

All I saw were blocks and pipes sticking out. The whole house gone.” Sgt. Larry Shiver of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department later said, “I’ve never had a house reported stolen in my career yet.”

The house was found a few days later, having been repossessed from the previous owner.

Aaron Meininger, 29, of Hernando Beach, Fla., was arrested on Feb. 2 after Hernando County deputies caught him stealing items from the Demarco Family Funeral Home in Spring Hill. When officers arrived, Meininger was carrying a tub of formaldehyde out of the building.

Curiously, the Tampa Bay Times reported, Meininger told deputies that he was “bored” and “messed up” and didn’t even know what kind of business he was burgling. He said he probably would have just thrown the stolen items away.

Compelling Explanations

On Feb. 9, the Texas 3rd Court of Appeals upheld the four-year prison sentence Ralph Alfred Friesenhahn, 65, of San Antonio received after his fourth DWI conviction in 2016, rejecting arguments from his lawyer, Gina Jones of New Braunfels, that the state’s legal limit for alcohol concentration discriminates against alcoholics, who have a higher tolerance for liquor. “You’re not being punished for being an alcoholic,” Sammy McCrary, chief of the felony division for the Comal County criminal district attorney’s office told the Austin American-Statesman. “It’s the driving that’s the problem.”

Name recognition won’t be a problem for the Libertarian Party challenger for eastern Arkansas’ 1st Congressional District seat: Elvis D. Presley. The Associated Press reported that the King impersonator from Star City, Ark., who legally changed his name to match the rock’n’roll icon’s (although the “real” Elvis’ middle initial was A), filed campaign paperwork on Feb. 26. Presley works as an auto refinish technician at Camp’s Custom Paint in Star City, but his political ambitions aren’t new: He’s also run for governor, land commissioner and state legislature.

Staff at an internet cafe in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China, had to call paramedics on Jan. 28 when a gamer lost all feeling in his lower limbs after playing the same game for more than 20 hours straight. Newsweek reported that the unnamed man didn’t realize he had become paralyzed until he tried to use the restroom and couldn’t move his legs. As he was being carried out on a stretcher, he was heard begging his friends to finish the game for him.

False Alarm

A Scottish farmer called Police Scotland after spotting what he believed to be a tiger in his cow shed near Peterhead in Aberdeenshire on Feb. 3. An armed response team scrambled to the farm and within 45 minutes, established that the fierce big cat was in fact a large cuddly toy. “Any call reporting a potential danger to the public has to be taken seriously,” Peterhead Inspector George Cordiner told Metro News. “Until you know exactly what you are dealing with, every option has to be considered.”

For 70-year-old Mary Lou Smith of Panama City Beach, winning the women’s division was topped only by a marriage proposal (which she accepted with a hearty honk from her shell) from fellow competitor Rick Race, 73, also of Panama City Beach. The Guardian reports that the large shells were used in the 19th century by seafarers as signaling devices, and dozens of entrants show off their skills each year at Key West’s Oldest House Museum.

Law And Disorder

District Judge Joseph Boeckmann, 72, took a personal interest in the young men who came through his courtrooms in Cross and St. Francis counties (Arkansas) from 2009 to 2015 with traffic citations or misdemeanor criminal charges. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that Boeckmann routinely dismissed those charges pending “community service,” which Boeckmann would set up through private phone calls with the men, assigning them to provide sexual favors or allow Boeckmann to take pictures of them in “embarrassing positions; positions that he found sexually gratifying,” a court doc-

ument revealed. Boeckmann, of Wynne, Ark., admitted to the charges in October and was sentenced Feb. 21 to five years in prison. Prosecutors had agreed to a lesser sentence in light of Boeckmann’s age, but U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker ordered the maximum sentence, saying, “(H)e acted corruptly while serving as a judge. That sets his crime apart.”

Unclear on the Concept

Washington State University senior Logan Tago, a football linebacker, received WSU’s Center for Civic Engagement Fall 2017 Community Involvement award on Feb. 1 for 240 hours of service to the local community, reported the WSU Daily Evergreen — service he was ordered to give as a stipulation of his sentencing in January 2017 for third-degree assault. In June 2016, The Seattle Times reported, Tago allegedly hit a man with a six-pack of beer and later agreed to a plea deal that called for 30 days in the Whitman County jail, $800 in fines — and exactly 240 hours of community service. Tago managed to play the final two games of the 2016 season and in all of 2017’s 13

On March 12 in Northumberland, England, a car thief making a getaway in a Mini Cooper S discovered the small car was not small enough to navigate a narrow stone staircase in Carlisle Park.

Northumbria police were called to the park around 11:30 p.m. where they found the car and its unnamed 31-year-old driver both wedged tightly between the staircase walls. Area residents speculated to Metro News that the driver might have been trying to re-enact a scene from the 1969 movie The Italian Job. “I’m sure the older Minis would have got down no problem,” said Chris Stoker.

An unnamed Russian woman stunned tourists and onlookers March 10 when she walked into the Red Sea and, with the help of a doctor and her partner, gave birth. From the balcony of her uncle’s apartment in Dahab, Egypt, Hadia Hosny El Said photographed the events, as the doctor carried the newborn and its father walked alongside with the still-attached placenta in a plastic bowl. After a few minutes, the mother emerged from the sea to join her family, including a toddler, on the beach. El Said told The Daily Mail the doctor is Russian and specializes in water births.

NEW YORKERS DEMAND SOLUTIONS TO OPIOID CRISIS The ongoing opioid epidemic troubling the nation ― especially upstate New York ― is a favorite talking point for politicians. It’s also something voters can get behind.

But a stunning set of polls released by Siena College in recent weeks made apparent the effect of the crisis on the state’s residents, as well as the underperformance by the state in challenging it.

The polls were released over the course of four weeks, presenting data that had been gathered over the last two years or so. The scope of the epidemic, while not completely surprising, is still extremely humbling.

The poll found that one out of every two New York residents have been personally touched by the crisis, and nearly a quarter of people personally know someone — a family member, friend or acquaintance — who has died due to an opioid overdose.

In Onondaga County, the number of opioid-related deaths has tripled since 2012.

That might explain why 80 percent of people said the opioid crisis has gotten worse in the last few years and only 4 percent say it has improved. That might ex-

plain why New Yorkers listed heroin, the growing availability of synthetic opioids and prescription drug abuse as the three most pressing health issues ― finishing far ahead of concerns of the last decade like obesity, mental illness and cigarette use. Indeed, more than three-quarters said opioid addiction is a disease that should be treated on the level of cancer or heart disease.

One thing that makes a solution to the opioid crisis so hard to find is the difficulty in figuring out just who to fault for its beginning. But the polls showed that nearly 80 percent of New Yorkers blame doctors who prescribe patients too many pain pills, as well as pharmaceutical companies that promote legal drugs without fully warning about risks.

About the same number of people support strengthening prescription monitoring and say pharmaceutical companies should be held legally and financially responsible for the opioid crisis. That sentiment has been shared by county governments across the nation, including Onondaga, Madison and Oneida, which have filed lawsuits against drug manufacturers and distributors in the last year.

Their reasoning for assigning blame doesn’t appear to be completely unfounded. The poll found that of the 25 percent of New Yorkers who were prescribed opioids in the last two years, only half of them were told by a doctor about the risks associated with those opioids and only 42 percent were warned by a pharmacist.

New Yorkers are also apparently displeased with how those currently suffering are receiving treatment. The Siena poll found that 18 percent of New Yorkers said they, a family member or a close friend have pursued treatment for opioid abuse over the last two years. Around 11 percent of people said that it was very easy to access treatment, but 26 percent said it was either “not very easy” or “not easy at all.”

Nearly half of those polled believed that insurance providers refusing to cover the cost is a barrier to people in their area receiving treatment. Also cited as barriers: treatment programs that weren’t long enough and treatment facilities with insufficient space.

When asked to divide 100 percent of the money available in New York to address the opioid crisis, the poll found that people would use the most — 25 percent — on funding treatment and rehabilitation, beating out addressing the root causes, public awareness, litigation and regulation.

New Yorkers were also pretty clear about solutions they don’t think would be very helpful. Nearly 60 percent of people opposed increasing funding for supervised injection sites where it would be safe to use heroin — a proposal several cities across the country have considered, including Ithaca.

To their credit, lawmakers in Albany have spent the last few years focusing more on preventive and reactive measures to the epidemic. In the 2018-2019 state budget that was passed last month, representatives agreed to a package of legislation that would, among other things, require opioid manufacturers and distributors to fund treatment programs and enact reasonable time limits on prescriptions of opioids unless patients’ medical records dictate otherwise.

But it’s clear that New Yorkers demand more from their elected officials. Lawmakers know the deadly statistics. They know the hard data. Now they have the pulse of public consciousness that these polls have helped bring forward. Let’s hope the information from these polls is as disturbing to them as it should be to us. SNT

SCHWEINFURTH HOSTS ANNUAL EMPIRE STATE EXHIBIT The 2018 edition of Made in New York indeed stretches across our state. The annual show at Auburn’s Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center features artists from Webster and Rochester, Syracuse and Ithaca, Brooklyn and other locales. Their artworks depict scenes ranging from the Adirondacks to the New York City subway, deal with our relationship to nature, and focus on memory and remembering.

Discussion of memory is both person-

al and broad-based. For example, Brad Cole’s “Swan Song,” an oil, portrays a young woman wading into water. The work evokes notions of passage and departure and is dedicated to his sister’s memory. Similarly, Jamie Young’s panoramic photo of a hillside recalls an area that held special meaning for his mother; it’s titled “My Mother Sees the Hill for the Last Time.”

by Diane Newton, revisits a trip to Europe by depicting a hotel lobby. The drawing leads the viewer’s eye from carefully arranged chairs to a chandelier, from the interior out into the street, posing a question: Why do we remember a particular moment?

That inquiry, in turn, leads to artworks

by Marna Bell and Patricia Rossotti. Bell, in her current series, “Mementos,” is photographing rooms and objects as passageways to the past. At Schweinfurth, her print shows a woman in a reflective mood, in a room with significance for her.

Rossotti, meanwhile, collects and processes plant specimens, places them on paper and ultimately takes a photo. In a piece from the series “Marking Matters in Time,” the forms seem to be dancing. On one level, it’s a pretty work. On another, it suggests how we distort memories, how we filter the events of our lives.

Several artists interpret nature from various perspectives. Stephen Horne’s acrylic depicts an Adirondack sand bank, contrasting a sandy surface and the rich colors of nearby vegetation. “The Slow Return,” Suzanne Onondera’s oil, concentrates on regeneration in a woodland area, on a stage that comes after decay and final decline.

This is a small, nicely executed painting.

Other works follow drastically different paths. Willson Cummer’s photograph “Canal Landing 919” documents woods right

behind backyards, referencing an uneasy coexistence for nature and humanity. In creating “Rain Scroll,” Peter Allen not only worked with paper and ink, he also left the scroll outside briefly to absorb raindrops.

Made in New York also explores other artistic directions. There are works like Belinda Bryce’s “Flatland,” a pared-down acrylic contrasting light and darkness and integrating small shapes. Nikolay Mikushki’s “Mosaic of October” is a painting that fully embraces fall foliage and abundant colors.

“Sacred Conversation,” done with egg tempera on panel by Thomas MacPherson, combines elements that seem to come from artworks long ago: images of cherubs and Mary, Mother of God, three figures whose clothing evokes Victorian England.

Mary Giehl’s “The Question is Why,” a large fiber work employing cotton thread and insect pins, approximates the shape of an AK47. Text accompanying the piece states that this weapon is used around the world, in the killing of around 250,000 people per year.

And the show touches on varying narratives. In “Margaret,” Lin Price’s oil on cradled board, a woman stands alone and evaluates the world around her; it’s up to the viewer to interpret the work. In “Subway Riders Beneath the Streets,” James Rose portrays more than a dozen passengers, working not only with the group dynamic but also individual details: two passengers eyeing phones, another holding a coffee cup.

Finally, Bob Gates’ “Traffic Jam,” an archival inkjet print, interprets a phenomenon that’s all too common. His work packs together dozens of images of cars; it’s a pattern that looks like a mosaic from a short distance.

This exhibit changes annually as a different set of jurors selects a new portfolio. This time around, Sharif Bey, Sarah McCoubrey and Miranda Traudt chose 75 artworks, resulting in a lineup with a bunch of thematic pieces, few sculptures, and no videos. Every Made in New York show has its own identity, and the 2018 version is well worth a visit to Auburn.

Made in New York is on display through June 17, along with The Accidental Immigrant, a solo exhibit by Tom Hall, and Ill Fusion, which features Shane Durgee’s work. Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m,, and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, free for children ages 12 and younger. MEOW MIXING SubCat Studios reopens its record label branch

By Jessica Novak ack in 2003, SubCat Music Studios was located in Skaneateles, where it also housed a record label in addition to the studio. Several bands initially signed on, including the local group Simplelife, but the focus of SubCat soon turned more to the recording side of business.

Now located near Armory Square at 219 S. West St., SubCat is getting back into the record label world in a big way: It has already signed on famous bluesman Tas Cru. Studio owner Ron Keck and manager TJ James plan to offer a mix of services for the budding label. “We want to reinforce the one-stop shop with SubCat,” James says. “We can mix, master, do graphic design, music videos, flyer printing, social media.

Cru, who had been signed to VizzTone Records, created his 2016 album Simmered & Stewed at SubCat. “We were here in Syracuse and had that under our belt,” Keck recalls. “It seemed like an appropriate time to start it (the label) back up, but the catalyst was Tas Cru. He approached me about taking him on last September.”

The combination works for both Cru and SubCat. While many artists clamored for a spot once they heard the label was

restarting, Keck knew an artist like Cru would make for a better first step.

“It’s important to us that the artist have some skin in the game,” Keck says. “They need to want to get in the van, travel and do their part. The issues I see are that the dynamics of a band have a direct relationship to their success. If there are four different dynamics working and the bass player says, ‘This isn’t for me,’ that’s not good for the label. It’s not healthy to have a band with dynamics that are not conducive to success.”

With Tas Cru, the partnership involves both give and take. Cru tours often and he paid for the recording of his last album. But SubCat funded the production of the album and helped create promotional materials including a music video, an interview video, social media materials, flyers and more. In turn, they’ll take a percentage of Cru’s sales to pay back the label for their investment.

Keck hopes their careful start and slow growth will help them better focus their attention on each of their artists, unlike other labels that become overcrowded with talent.

“A lot of labels have huge catalogs, so artists might get lost,” Keck says. “If there are so many artists on a label, do they really have the resources to get behind all of those artists? We want to see what we can do with one artist, then add more to the catalog.”

When word got out that the SubCat label was returning, James and Keck got buried with requests for information from bands looking for support. Although the label isn’t currently taking on more clients, Keck states, “We would love to hear from people who want to be in the SubCat family. Our ultimate goal is to have relationships with artists, to see who they are and what they’re all about.”

Keck also wants to bring a variety of genres to the label. “Most labels are small companies that have artists they really like to listen to in certain styles,” Keck says.

“We won’t be a specific style-oriented

label. We won’t just be blues or just rock.”

The short-term goal of SubCat Records is to work with Cru throughout the year and take note of the developments. After that, Keck and James hope they’ll have a better understanding of what to do with artists and how they can best help them grow. Beyond that, Keck hopes that SubCat Records, as well as other local labels like L.R.S. and Aux, will serve as examples of what the Syracuse music scene is all about.

“There’s a ton of talent here and very cool people who want to help other people out,” he says. “It’s healthy. I think they’ll (the other labels) bring their two cents to the artists. Obviously, I want to take a look at what they’re doing for artists, too, and learn from them.

“It’s the same with recording,” Keck continues. “We look at what other studios do so we’re not in our own world. We listen to the stuff they put out. It’s healthy to have other people around and support the local music scene as much as possible.”

CORELIFE’S EXPANSION PLANS INCLUDE DEWITT DESTINATION

W

hat if the opening of a restaurant predicated on healthfulness and wellness caused traffic jams and traffic advisories, like Chick-fil-A did when the national fried chicken outlet opened a Central New York location earlier this year?

That could happen when CoreLife Eatery comes to DeWitt this fall, and eventually to Fairmount. The Rochester, Buffalo and Albany areas now have several CoreLife locations to choose from and expansion is not limited to New York state. The fast-growing, fast-casual chain now has nearly 40 outlets in 10 states, with more on the way.

North Syracuse is home to the flagship CoreLife Eatery, which opened in 2015 in the former Jo-Li-Me Cafe spot next door to Chuck Hafner’s Farmers Market and Garden Center. A new, free-standing outlet in DeWitt, with lots of light, bright colors and seating for about 100, is expected to make its debut in early fall.

Original Grain Heads West Another Syracuse brand getting set to grow is Original Grain, a health- and wellness-focused restaurant at the corner of Salina and Fayette streets in downtown Syracuse. Original Grain is headed to downtown Rochester this fall, bringing its avocado toast, smoothie bowls, poke bowls and other “good feels food’’ to the Flower City.

The influential Switched-On Bach album celebrates its golden anniversary

WHEN BACH GOT ROCKED

I

f the late 1960s was the dawning of the age of Aquarius, a future where harmony, understanding, sympathy and trust would abound, an even more radical reality — electronic music — loomed on the horizon as well.

In fact, the eponymous theremin, the primitive tone generator that provided the creepy whine heard in many a science-fiction B-movie, had been on the market for some time, and the voltage-controlled analog synthesizer was under development by Robert Moog, a Ph.D. in electronic physics from Cornell University in Ithaca.

Primitive as well by today’s standards, Moog’s transistorized synthesizer, a keyboard instrument, first met the public during a demonstration/concert at his Trumansburg facility on Aug. 28, 1965, a harbinger of future shock in the music business.

Two years later the Moog synthesizer was shown at the Monterey Pop Music Festival, an introduction that was destined to have long legs. More importantly, Moog met Walter Carlos, a recording engineer, composer and keyboardist, and producer Rachel Elkind that same year, generating a seminal collaboration that would lead to Switched-On Bach, the landmark LP that was unthinkable just a couple years earlier.

By 1967, Carlos — later to become Wendy Carlos — had already written and recorded several pieces for the synthesizer including the “Two-Part Invention in F Major” by Johann Sebastian Bach, the towering icon of the Baroque era. Expanding on that idea, Carlos and Moog envisioned a full-length LP of Bach’s music performed

solely on Moog’s revolutionary instrument.

Referencing its electronic genesis, Switched-On Bach was released by Columbia Masterworks in 1968. Consisting of 10 selections, including the “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3,” the familiar “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” “Air on a G String” and other inventions, preludes and fugues, Switched-On Bach dropped like a bunker buster on the world of classical music, fostering incredulity and pushback from classical music purists, who considered such treatment to be blasphemous. But those objections were quickly overwhelmed by the enthusiastic reaction of other listeners, including a young audience not otherwise considered to be interested in music written in the first half of the 18th century.

It had not been an easy project. Still in its infancy, the Moog synthesizer of 1968 was monophonic, capable of producing only one note at a time, requiring each voice — and there are many running concurrently in Baroque music — to be taped individually and layered together afterward.

To make matters even more labor-intensive, Moog’s nascent electronic wunderkind was colicky, frequently drifting off pitch and requiring constant readjustment.

And then there was the challenge of choosing from the myriad of previously unheard of sonorities and effects

the machine was capable of generating and using them effectively. The whole project, end to end, took 1,000 hours of work over five months to produce barely 40 minutes of music.

In the end, it was all a smashing success. The public glommed onto the novel approach, a marriage of extremes, the improbable melding of ancient music and modern, experimental technology, vaulting SwitchedOn Bach quickly to the top of the classical charts where it remained for 49 weeks and as high as No. 10 on the Billboard 200.

In 1970 the daring LP was honored with three Grammy Awards: Classical Album of the Year, Best Classical Performance by an Instrumental Soloist and Best Engineered Classical Album. A rating of gold (500,000 albums sold) from the Recording Industry Association of America was not far behind, and in 1986 Switched-On Bach was certified platinum for selling 1 million copies, the first classical album to achieve that status.

A second collection of electronic Bach, The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, was released in 1969. And a 25th anniversary edition of Switched-On Bach was released on CD in 1992, followed by other reissues.

More significantly, Switched-On Bach immediately cast a long shadow, influencing a legion of composers and performers, especially in popular music, including Keith Emerson (Emerson, Lake and Palmer), Stevie Wonder, The Doors, The Beatles, the Beach Boys, The Who, Diana Ross, Rick Wakeman (Yes), adventurous jazz musicians Sun Ra (the Sun Ra Arkistra), John McLaughlin and Jan Hammer (the Mahavishnu Orchestra), pianist Bob James and many others. In 1971 Carlos went on to use the synthesizer on the soundtrack for director Stanley Kubrick’s quirky film A Clockwork Orange, performing original music and works by Beethoven and Rossini, further expanding the instrument’s footprint.

Fifty years after its release date, Switched-On Bach, an album that shared air space at its inception with Big Brother and the Holding Company’s (Janis Joplin) blues-rock staple Cheap Thrills, Jimi Hendrix’s psychedelic manifesto Electric LadyLand and The Beatles’ soundtrack for Magical Mystery Tour, presents itself as fresh and as innovative as ever.

The first cut, “Sinfonia to Cantata No. 29,” serves as a template for the album’s concept and character. Originally written for solo violin and later transcribed by Bach for a larger ensemble, this dynamic opening statement, especially at volume, is a giddy thrill ride replete with a wealth of alternate tonal colorations and the cavalier use of stereo imaging, where contrapuntal voices bounce playfully from channel to channel. All of this was unimaginable in the composer’s lifetime.

What would Bach have thought of the synthesizer?

Would the grand master of the Baroque, the endlessly daring and improvisational innovator, have dismissed this instrument as irrelevant, an ephemeral trifle to be ignored? Or would he have embraced the protean keyboard as a potent, expressive option, and chosen to explore its possibilities and have his way with it? I think I know the answer. SNT
