Regarding the May 18 article, I’m passing along a recall on Joel Mareiniss back in the 1970s when I worked at Carrier. Like everywhere on Monday morning there had to be a comment on the game over the weekend, no matter the sport. One Monday after a Syracuse University football game, an SU fan listening on the radio heard this call by Joel after an SU touchdown pass was waved off by the ref because the receiver’s”right rear leg was over the back line of the end zone.” Lots of good calls and memories — Bob W.Rome, NY

On June 26, 2015, the day a Supreme Court ruling made same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states, the Rev. A.J. Striffler hosted a Syracuse rally celebrating the landmark decision. About 150 people attended that joyous gathering at Syracuse’s First Lutheran Church. Nearly a year later, Striffler spoke to a crowd at least three times as large that gathered to mourn the deaths of 49 people killed Sunday, June 12, at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. “We have never backed down and we’ve never given in to bullying,” Striffler said at a June 13 rally outside Syracuse’s City Hall. The LGBTQIA community is “fierce, ferocious and fabulous in the universal call for justice,” he said. “We are beautiful, colorful people who walk together in the ugly mess society (has made).” A mostly somber group listened to speeches, consoled one another and lit candles during the vigil. At least three city police cars were parked near the event, and Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler stood near the makeshift stage on City Hall’s steps. No protesters were visible, not even the anti-gay protester Jim Deferio, a regular at CNY Pride events. Striffler belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which in 2009 voted to allow congregations to recognize and bless same-sex unions. He

drew laughter and cheers in a speech that praised the diversity and resilience of the gay community. We “dance and twerk down the path to dismantling heterosexism and patriarchy,” he said. And the gay community “silences the biggest bullies with two claps and a snap.” In a brief interview before the vigil, though, Striffler struggled to find a clever line to address religious extremism that leads to hatred of gays. “The rhetoric and language is meant to incite,” he said. “It’s meant to drive wedges between people and do damage.” But vigil attendees said they wouldn’t let that happen. “I’m here to mourn and to urge against the easy scapegoating of Muslims that so often accompanies acts of violence,” said Kathleen Feyh, who held a small sign that read, “No Islamophobia.” “As a queer woman it does not serve me to tighten surveillance, restrict immigration and marginalize Muslims,” she said. “To pit one oppressed group against another serves none of us. I’m not going to rise to the bait.” Mohamed Khater, president of the Islamic Society of Central New York, looked drawn and tired as he read a brief statement condemning the massacre. As he and other Muslim leaders have done numerous times since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Khater noted that the Muslim

The large crowd reflected diversity of age and ethnicity as well as sexual orientation and gender expression. In attendance were groups of young teens, longtime gay rights activists, couples with children in strollers and a few people with canes. Amy Bartell held a sign in homage to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s sonnet after he accepted the award for best score for the Broadway musical Hamilton at Sunday’s Tony Awards: “Love is love is love.” Her 13-year-old nephew asked her to explain why someone attacked people enjoying a night at a gay club. “I was stumped,” Bartell said. “When I heard this, I loved it. That’s what we have to hold on to: love.” Harry Freeman-Jones, who married another man in 1973, said Sunday morning’s

massacre was a reminder that legalizing gay marriage has not ended anti-gay discrimination and violence. “There’s been decades of bullying, intimidation, marginalizing, giving license to those people who want to murder our people,” he said. “In our daily lives, we don’t feel safe because of who we love,” he said. “It’s taken a lot of fortitude to survive to this day. We need to amplify and renew our struggle. What always got us through is love and hope.” That’s the strategy Striffler offers, too. “We’re not a people who respond to hate with hate,” he said. “We respond by coalescing and bonding and loving.” SNT The annual CNY Pride Parade begins Saturday, June 18, 11:30 a.m., with a route that travels from the Destiny USA parking lot down Solar Street to the Syracuse Inner Harbor, where the CNY Pride Festival will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Renée K. New World Order

As an alternative to the more costly in vitro fertilization, researchers at a Dresden, Germany, institute announced, in the recent Nano Letters journal, that they had developed a motorized device tiny enough to fit around a sperm’s tail and which could be commanded to propel it to “swim” faster toward the target egg, increasing the chances of fertilization. A prototype is still in the works. The internet pornography behemoth PornHub recently added to the glut of physical fitness “apps” with one designed to help users tone up sexual muscles. The BangFit’s routines include the “squat and thrust,” the “missionary press,” and other ways to practice what the company describes as the “one activity people are always motivated to do and (for) which they are never too busy.” Imagine, for example, wrote Mashable.com, “quantify(ing) your dry humps.”

Weird Animals

Among the critters for which life is most difficult are male nursery web spiders that, according to May research in Biology Letters journal, instinctively “court” females with food wrapped in silk

6

— offerings that (a) increase the males’ chances of scoring and (b) decrease, by 84 percent, their chances that the female will spontaneously eat the male. The study also found that males sometimes try to mate using nonfood items wrapped in silk (with mixed results) and also that sometimes unscrupulous females accept food gifts but nevertheless immediately devour the male.

South Carolina Chutzpah

James Kinley III, 27, was charged in York County, S.C., in May with dealing marijuana. He apparently had the unfounded belief that York County deputies do not monitor Craigslist — because that is where Kinley advertised (“I Sell Weed”), in a notice with his photo, address and price ($200). Grady Carlson, 58, went to the Carolina Title Loans office in Spartanburg, S.C., on May 25 to apply for a high-interest “payday” loan — and nervously paced while answering questions. The Carolina employee asked if anything was wrong, and Carlson allegedly disclosed that he needed money — fast! — to purchase methamphetamine. A subsequent police search turned up a glass container and drugs.

AMERICA ROLLS OUT THE BARRELS

M

ainly to give myself something else to think about, I took on a rather bureaucratic challenge while watching coverage of the June 12 horror in Orlando. By searching the internet, could I compile a list of fatal shootings in the United States that took place the same weekend and would add up to the Pulse nightclub’s body count? The project was inspired by President Obama’s shopworn admonition that we need to decide what kind of country we want to live in, as if we haven’t already. Even as he spoke, the decision was coming in loud and clear: from Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and from smaller places, including Obama’s home state of Hawaii and our sister city of Rochester. The country we want to live in — or at least the one many of us seem content to live in — is a country that tolerates a Pulse death toll by firearms every few days. My list begins on Friday, June 10, and ends Sunday evening, June 12. It is not comprehensive. Surely I missed some needless deaths, especially suicides. Note that the following list does not include known hate crimes or connections to international terrorism, so in that sense it is not “another Orlando.” But there’s a common thread: In America, anyone who is pissed off about anything can resolve their grievance with a gun. We make it easy. Here’s the list:

1. The Voice singer Christina Grimmie, 22, while signing autographs at an Orlando theater Friday. 2. An unidentified man at an intersection Saturday in Akron, Ohio. 3-4. Two teen girls in Panorama City, Calif., by the ex-boyfriend of their mother. The shooter also killed himself. 5. Rod Benton, 34, boyfriend of the alleged shooter’s sister, in Atlanta. A fourhour standoff with police followed. 6. Gerald Bishop II, 31, a cheerleading coach in Columbus, Ohio. Suspect found. 7. Tijuan J. Patterson, 20, in Columbus. Suspect at large. 8. A 19-year-old male, name not released, at a Radisson hotel in Rochester. 9. Antwon Brooks, 37, father of two, in Chicago. 10. A 17-year-old-boy, name not released, shot in the back in Chicago. 11. Jeremy H. Ray, 27, approached and shot multiple times by two gunmen, in Chicago. Gunmen drove off. 12. Terry Bates Jr., 26, approached and shot multiple times by two gunmen, in

Chicago. Gunmen ran off. Another victim survived. (In addition to the fatalities, at least 18 people were wounded, including a 5-year-old girl, in Chicago-area shootings.) 13. A 40-year-old man, found early Sunday on a New Orleans lawn. 14. Clamisha Houston, 19, near New Orleans, as she stepped off a party bus. She was the mother of twins. 15. Gilbert Oosthuszian, 44, in the parking lot of his Fort Lauderdale VFW Post, by a man in a ski mask and hoodie. (There was a non-fatal shooting at a VFW Post in Queens.) 16. George William Edmond Jr., during a home invasion in North Houston, Texas, by two men wielding pistols. 17. Eric Oliver, 31, in the Bronx, in his wheelchair. Oliver was paralyzed in a 2006 shooting. 18. A 22-year-old man, shot multiple times in the gut in Brooklyn. 19. Jessica White, 29, in the Bronx, when a man fired into a crowd of people. Police say she was not the intended target. 20. Jarvis Robinson, 19, found face down and bleeding in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store in Memphis, Tenn. It was the city’s 100th homicide in 2016. 21. A man, after gunfire erupted at the end of a party early Saturday morning near Los Angeles. Another man was hurt. Details were pending. 22. A man was fatally shot and another wounded by two men on a bike in South Los Angeles. Details were pending. 23. Cynthia Ambiz, 19, shot from behind

while walking home from a party in Carson, near Los Angeles. 24. A man died in the hospital after being shot while working on a car early Saturday. Additional details were pending. 25. A man in East Los Angeles. Details were pending. 26-30. Four children, ages 3 to 14, and their mother, allegedly by the woman’s husband and the father of the children, David Villegas-Hernandez, who remained at large. 31. A man in North Philadelphia, shot multiple times. 32-33. A 9-year-old girl and her father, of a murder-suicide, in Littlestown, Pa. Names were pending. 34. Russell Jamal Waddell, 42, at a party in Jacksonville. Two men were arrested. 35. At least one man in a double shooting at a Motel 6 in Henrico, Va. 36. Rodney Peoples, 25 in Kansas City, Mo., on the 3300 block of Indiana Avenue. 37-38. Kenneth Reed and Damion Alton, both 30, both shot in the back of the head, found outside a car in St. Louis. 39. John Jerome Moore, 24, shot in the head, in his St. Louis house. 40. A man in his 20s, shot in the chest, in a parking lot, Albuquerque, N.M. 41. Barbara Pereira, 66, found in her Maili, Hawaii, home. Her son Anthony, 43, is in custody. 42. A man, shot while sitting in a car in Little Rock, Ark. Another victim survived. 43-44. Two men, near Greensboro, N.C. A suspect who was arrested is a person of interest in two other shootings and three assaults on the night of June 11 to 12. 45. Carlos Pineda, near a middle school in Dallas. 46. A 30-year-old man in East Palo Alto, Calif., of multiple wounds. 47. Dwayne T. Triplett, 32, slumped over the wheel of his vehicle, near his home in Chicago. 48. J. Juan Briseno-Ortega, 50, by Yakima, Wash. Police, after they say he pulled a gun on them when they responded to a domestic disturbance. 49. Deandre Barnes, 13, in Baltimore. 50. Garrison Derricks, 23, in Baltimore. 51. A man in Camden. N.J. 52. David Smith, 36, when gunfire erupted during a fight at the Checkered Flag Tavern in Indianapolis that is popular with motorcyclists. “It’s WING DAY!!” someone posted on the bar’s Facebook page three days later. And there you have it. That’s 52 gunshot fatalities by my count. One weekend. Not counting Orlando. The country we live in. SNT

QUEEN BEE CATCHES THE YOGURT BUZZ

CONES IN CAZ

There were so many temptations at the recent Taste of Syracuse foodie festival in downtown Syracuse: pizza. Bang-Bang Shrimp. Pasta. Deep-fried pasta. Fried dough. Doughnuts with maple, bourbon and bacon. So maybe you didn’t go to the Taste for froyo. Or maybe you did. The $1 frozen yogurt sample and frozen yogurt treats served by the Queen Bee Creamery made the “must taste” list of more than a few festivalgoers. “All of a sudden, I started seeing lines at my booth (in front of the Clinton Exchange building) going across the street,’’ said Alicia Dargan, owner of the Camillus-based operation. “It was a continuous stream of people. People were seeking us out, people were telling other people. We sold out of every sample we had.’’ Dargan, who learned she had lost a loved one on the day the festival opened, says she got through it on “divine guidance” and positive energy. “The experience exceeded my expectations,’’ she says. “It was a phenomenal success.’’ Now Dargan is preparing for the grand opening of Queen Bee Creamery. It’s in the spot formerly known as The Yogurt Bar, in the small plaza at 100 Kasson Road. It has been in a “soft open’’ phase for several weeks, with a grand opening scheduled for June 20. Dargan plans to have the shop open seven days a week, with self-serve softserve frozen yogurt in a rotating roster of seasonal flavors, including (but not limited to) dark chocolate, balsamic strawberry, dulce du leche, caramelized banana and others. Her signature flavor, golden vanilla yogurt, is made with milk and cream, and a low-fat version is also available. The menu also offers smoothies, milkshakes and “cookiewiches’’ (frozen yogurt

between two scratch-made cookies), as well as sorbets and other non-dairy offerings. Her “coolers,’’ made with San Pellegrino sparkling water and frozen yogurt, also made a splash at Taste of Syracuse. Dargan, a native of Green Bay, Wis., has a background in food processing and product development (premium dessert mixes) and marketing. She says the Greek yogurt boom in her new state inspired her to develop an all-natural, Greek-style frozen yogurt. Unlike some frozen yogurt shops that use prepared mixes to make their offerings, Dargan makes everything on site at her shop, starting with locally sourced milk and cream and utilizing other local ingredients whenever possible. The yogurts are sweetened with honey from Cortland and Ithaca, hence the name Queen Bee. “My hive is in Camillus,’’ Dargan says. The entrepreneur developed her frozen yogurt and custard in collaboration with the Department of Food Science at Cornell University in Ithaca. Earlier this year, she participated in the Food Science 4000 capstone course, where graduating seniors act as consultants and put their knowledge to work to help New York-based food businesses. Dargan’s ultimate goal is to bring her yogurt to the wholesale grocery and food service distribution level. To do so, she needs a shelf-stable product and a certified food safety plan. The students offered valuable support with both food science and marketing expertise, Dargan says. “I call it my Christmas gift,’’ she says. “Participating in this class truly was a gift.’’ Queen Bee Creamery has limited hours prior to its June 20 grand opening. For information, visit the Queen Bee Creamery Facebook page at facebook.com/ TheQueenBeeCreamry.

New in Cazenovia and just in time for summer: Carter’s Creamery, an ice cream shop located at the back of Dave’s Diner, with walk-up windows on Sullivan Street. The menu features vanilla and chocolate soft-serve ice cream made by Queensboro Dairy, of Canastota, plus more than 20 flavors of Hershey’s hard-pack ice cream, in flavors like chocolate raspberry truffle and classic strawberry. There’s also Dole Whip, frozen yogurt, milkshakes, root beer floats, slushes and other frosty items. Signature sundaes include a treat made with strawberry rhubarb sauce from Our Farm in Madison County, as well as a bacon maple specialty and a peanut butter explosion sundae. Summer hours are Sundays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For information, visit facebook.com/Carters-Creamery. SNT

OKLAHOMA! STILL OK IN CLASSIC REVIVAL No director undertakes a revival of Oklahoma! lightly. The Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein golden-age oldie might be the most familiar of all American musicals, but it also broke the moldy mold and changed the shape of the form forever. To take us back to what made the 1943 production revolutionary, director-choreographer Jen Waldman has applied what might be called an originalist approach for the season opener at Auburn‘s Merry-GoRound Playhouse (running through Wednesday, June 22). Scenic designer David Arsenault’s spare open set evokes not only the plains but also the rigors of wartime austerity. And Waldman’s leads are multi-taskers. If this is the show that integrates narrative, music and dance, her leads must excel at them all. The return of Waldman, head of the prestigious Waldman Acting Studio in Manhattan, is notable in itself. She had helmed several shows at MerryGo-Round, some of them very familiar like My Fair Lady, before taking over as artistic director at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre in 2013. Her stagings there, especially the explosive and erotic Spring Awakening (June 2015), won ecstatic praise from the Syracuse New Times and other outlets, but nonetheless her contract abruptly ended last October. Her appointment back in Auburn is a vote of confidence in her artistic integrity, as well giving her a chance to display her versatility. Critics and historians have long recognized that World War II, then going badly, is a palpable offstage presence. There was a shortage of funding as well as able-bodied men. The heady optimism of the opening 6.15.16 - 6.21.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

number, “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” is presented on a nearly bare stage with just a small slice of Aunt Eller’s white clapboard house. Baritone Curly (Stephen Mark Lukas) is both assertive and defiant. Oklahoma had just endured both the Depression and the Dust Bowl, and impoverished Okies were fleeing. What we are about to see will upturn all that. Not that this is a low-cost production. David Arsenault’s mobile set allows for the instant construction of the dingy Smoke House, where the outcast Jud Fry (Denis Lambert) puts up naughty pictures. This is also one of the rare productions in which the company produces an actual surrey with the fringe on top — including the isinglass curtains, perfectly meeting Hammerstein’s lyrics — before the final curtain. The celebrated modernity of Oklahoma! rests on the coordination of character and plot to music and the integration of the dance numbers. In this production, as rarely happens these days, the leads Curly and Laurey (Lindsey Bliven) display their musical excellence and pert repartee but also take on the fourpart Dream Sequence that ends the first act. Choreographer Agnes de Mille’s landmark innovation almost stands as drama by itself and indeed is more affecting when we see the same faces in both. Despite the significance of the show in the development of the dance musical, there are not as many dance numbers as in later examples of the genre, like West Side Story or 42nd Street. The first important one comes with the male chorus in the novelty number, “Kansas City,” where everything’s up to date. As familiar as this may have become in 73 years, it’s

still startling to see husky-looking men sashaying in modern dance routines while wearing cowboy boots. Musically, Oklahoma! is not as folksy as audiences sometimes assume, despite the second-act opener “The Farmer and the Cowman,” and the conspicuous non-standard grammar and rounded-off -ings. Indeed, some musical numbers put operatic demands on voices, such as Curly and Laurey’s prime duet, “People Will Say We’re in Love.” Both Bliven and Lukas are superlative, expressive singers with the discipline to take on Puccini as easily as Richard Rodgers. Bliven’s soprano sparkles in the operetta-like lyricism of “Many A New Day,” a number that could have been written a generation earlier. Keeping with the show’s original liberal interpretation, Denis Lambert as outcast Jud Fry evokes more sympathy than dread. Meanwhile, two comic subplots flow near the surface, the first involving Ado Annie (Leslie Goddard), the most celebrated soubrette in American musical theater, and her forgiving boyfriend Will Parker (Danny Lindgren). Goddard is shorter and hotter-tempered than other Annies, more a firecracker than a sexpot, despite her ability to encircle a male body with her legs in one flying leap. Her “I Cain’t Say No” has to stop the show, and it does. As Will, Lindgren brings the presence of vocal qualities of a leading man rather than a supporting player, and gets the maximum out of his lines. The only cast member wearing a business suit and at ease in the cash economy is articulate peddler Ali Hakim (Matt Ban). He’s supposed to be Persian, but Ban plays him with hints of Sacha Baron Cohen. Program notes inform that Ban sang the role of Curly in a high school production, so he knows all the show’s secrets. His solo, “It’s a Scandal, It’s an Outrage,” often deleted in other productions, is a standout. This is a tight, bright Oklahoma! without a slack moment that sheds its age by returning to the original model. SNT

Cast members of the Redhouse’s The Little Mermaid. Genevieve Fridley photo

SEAWORTHY SHOW MAKES A SPLASH Disney mega-musicals, which are stage transformations of film properties, enjoy a well-deserved high reputation with audiences. Consider how long The Lion King has been a box-office champ. We don’t often catch them in this part of the world because they are usually thought to be destination productions that you have to drive to see. Enter fearless director Stephen Svoboda, who works logistical miracles the way a lesser man might pedal his bicycle. For The Little Mermaid (through June 25), there are more than 70 people on stage at the Redhouse Arts Center, plus more costume changes than you could count. Along the way, Mermaid is witty, allusive, magical, hilarious and touching. Saying this is Disney’s Little Mermaid, not Hans Christian Andersen’s Mermaid, means two things. First, the original tragic ending that caused the Danes to erect a statue to the Mermaid in Copenhagen Harbor has been scrubbed. Secondly, the musical team, headed by composer Alan Menken with lyricists Glenn Slater and Howard Ashman, delivers a stronger score than the show’s initial shortish run (only a year) might imply, with clever allusions that run as wide as calypso to Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. The Disney people generally cling to Andersen for other story elements. A naïve human prince, Eric (Thai-born baritone Napat Mingkwanyuen), is smitten with a beautiful voice he hears from the sea. It belongs to the redhaired mermaid Ariel (Shelley Cooper), a species Eric and his scowling adviser Grimsby (Navroz Dabu) think is mythical. Below the surface, Ariel and her pal Flounder (David

Griffith) cannot grasp the world of humans, especially when they are confused by the misinformation of the talkative crab Scuttle (David Cotter). Of more immediate concern, Ariel and Flounder are caught in a sibling civil war between her benign father, King Triton (Jeffrey Hyman), all dressed in white, and Ariel’s aunt Ursula (Julia Goretsky), a vicious black octopus with long tentacles and a huge pile of frosty white hair. Triton is assisted by his court composer, Sebastian (LaRon Grant) the crab, who speaks with a Jamaican accent. When Eric falls overboard, Ariel falls in love with him but can only be with him by becoming human, for which she must pay an exacting price. Musical assignments, managed by Bridget Moriarty, are distributed widely, including to characters not cited here. As is the pattern at the Redhouse, director Svoboda imports voices for some of the most demanding roles and brings the best out of prime local talents for the others. His find in this production is baritone Napat Mingkwanyuen, a singer with substantial national and international credits for the role of Prince Eric, starting with his intro number, “Fathoms Below.” Company regular Shelley Cooper already won her star with lead roles in the recent dual productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Into the Woods, but here she is both a comic and tragic heroine. As Ursula, powerhouse Julia Goretsky, last seen as Emma Goldman in Ragtime, is the major scene-stealer in this huge production. When you dominate a cast topping 70, that’s grand theft musicale. SNT

A DROLL DUFFER’S DELIGHT

M

any audiences may never have heard of Ken Ludwig’s The Fox on the Fairway, but they know what they are buying into with this season opener at Cortland Repertory Theatre, running through Saturday, June 18.

Artistic director Kerby Thompson has been launching his summer slates with fast-paced farces for quite some time, even though it’s like serving dessert as the first course. And he’s tapped his go-to director Bert Bernardi to crack the whip and keep the cast caroming along at frantic speed. Also back for more is Michael Schaefer, a veteran actor who knows how to turn the anxiety of any authority figure into a comic mudpie. Playwright Ludwig is the most successful author of American stage farces of the last generation, with Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo and the deconstructed Hound of the Baskervilles seen at Syracuse Stage last month. Cortland Rep has taken chances on lesser-known Ludwigs before, such as the cross-dressing comedy Leading Ladies (June 2008). But Ludwig, who owes much to British comic playwrights like Ray Cooney, favors sexual vanilla over spicier flavors. Convention and authority will be teased and tickled but not subjected to pants-down humiliation as with French farce. A prime example of how un-risqué Fairway is comes in the single most quotable line in the two hours: “Golf and sex are the only two things you can enjoy 6.15.16 - 6.21.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

without being good at them.” There it is: G-rated naughtiness. Despite the title, all the action takes place indoors, in a brightly lighted, paneled tap room of the Quail Valley Country Club somewhere in the eastern United States. Scenic designer Ola Kraszpulska suggests the economic and social confidence of the well-to-do, even though some well-laid plans are about to fly apart. Tension begins when club president Henry Bingham (Michael Schaefer) enters into a foolhardy wager with hated rival Dickie Bell (Justin Klose), only his star pro has defected to the enemy and he has to rely on a newly hired hand, Justin Hicks (Dan Wilt). Dickie never earns a shred of audience sympathy through guilt by gaucheries. Costumer Jimmy Johansmeyer has contrived to dress the rival in surreally hideous sweaters and loud pants, each outfit raising the bar of outrageousness. Equally lame, Dickie’s idea of humor is to mangle proverbs, although Ludwig could have leveled the contest by giving him some better material. For a while Fairway looks like a replay of Lend Me a Tenor, where young go-getter Justin saves the day for the old man,

but Ludwig already did that. So Justin falls in love with Louise Heindbedder (Tayler Beth Anderson), then suffers a malady previously unknown to characters in farce: When things go wrong, he just falls to pieces. Thus when careless Louise flushes Justin’s engagement ring down the toilet, he’s out of the competition. Not mentioned yet are two women, whose full connection to the plot features surprise twists. One is voluptuous blonde Pamela Peabody (Charlie Jhaye), the country club’s vice president. She had been married to the hated Dickie, and there’s something in her suggestive presence that she might be a bit more than Bingham’s business associate. Jhaye’s skill in delivering well-timed gag lines certainly justifies her character’s existence, until the plot supplies a better hook for her. The remaining woman is Henry Bingham’s wife Muriel (Nancy Kane), who is understandably furious because husband Henry has included her antiques shop in the harebrained wager with Dickie. While all the characters are variations of familiar types, the plus-size battle-ax wife is the most shameless cliché. Yet actress Kane, who might be one of the youngest members of the cast, refuses to take the easy way out and turns this zircon of a role into quite a sparkling gem. Most of the responsibility for keeping this kite up in the air goes to veterans Michael Schaefer and Tayler Beth Anderson. Not only is Schaeffer’s timing perfect, but he’s an enabler, a straight man who buffets others’ comic jabs. Anderson, fondly remembered from Cortland Rep’s 2014 Boeing Boeing, plumbs the possibilities of Louise’s earnestness, not unlike Progressive Insurance’s Flo. Fairway may not be first-rate Ludwig, but this speedy production triumphs over the material. SNT

ARIES (March 21-April 19) The coming

months will be a favorable time to boost your skills as a cagey warrior. I don’t mean you should push people around and get into lots of fights. Rather, the goal is for you to harness your aggressiveness constructively and to wield your willpower with maximum grace. In the face of fear, you will not just be brave, but brave and crafty. You’ll refrain from forcing storylines to unfold before they’re ready, and you’ll rely on strategy and good timing instead of brute strength and the decree “Because I said so.” Now study this counsel from the ancient Chinese statesman Zhuge Liang, also known as Crouching Dragon: “The wise win before they fight, while the ignorant fight to win.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Everything you do in the coming days should be imbued with the intention of enhancing the Flow. It’s high time to identify where the energy is stuck, and then get it unstuck. You have a sacred mandate to relieve the congestion, to relax the tweaks, to unravel the snarls if you can, or simply cut through them if necessary. You don’t need to tell anyone about your secret agenda. Just go about your business with zealous diligence and unflagging purpose. If it takes more effort than you wished, so be it. If your progress seems maddeningly gradual, keep the faith. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) My long-term predictions for the next 15 months are a blend of hopeful optimism and a reasonable interpretation of the astrological omens. Here we go: 1. You will have an excellent chance to smooth and soothe the rough spots in your romantic karma. 2. You will outgrow any addiction you might have to frustrating connections. 3. Unrequited love will either be requited, or else you’ll become bored with the futile chase and move on. 4. You’ll be challenged to either refresh and reinvent an existing intimacy, or else get shrewd enough not to repeat past mistakes in a new intimacy. 5. You will have an abundance of good ideas about how to install the theme of smart fun at the heart of your strongest alliances. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Author Courttia

Newland quotes the pre-Socratic philosopher Meno: “How will you go about finding the thing the nature of which is totally unknown to you?” In response to this riddle, Newland riffs on what it means to him: “Even more important than the journey itself, is the venture into the unknowable. The ability to find comfort moving forward without quite knowing where you are going.” I nominate these to be your words to live by in the coming days, Cancerian. Have open-hearted fun as you go in search of mysterious and impossible secrets! I’m confident you will track them down -- especially if you’re willing to be lost.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your homework is

to write a story about the life you’re going to live between now and next April. The length of this predictive tale should be at least three pages, although it’s fine if you produce more. Here are some meditations to lubricate the flow of your imagination. 1. What three questions would you love to have answered during the next 42 weeks? 2. Of the numerous adventures that might be fun to explore, which are the two that would be most consistently energizing? 3. What is the one thing you’d most like to change about your attitude or revamp about your life? 4. What new privilege will you have earned by April 2017?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) According to an

old Chinese proverb, if you want to get rich, you must have a nickname. My meditations on your future suggest that this curious formula may have some validity. The next 15 months will be a favorable time to attend to the groundwork that will ultimately increase your wealth. And your luck in doing this work is likely to be oddly good if you add a frisky tweak to your identity -- such as a zesty new nickname, for example. I suggest you stay away from clichés like Ace

or Vixen or Sharpie, as well as off-putting ironic monikers like Poker Face and Stonewall. Instead, gravitate toward lively choices like Dazzler, FluxLuster, Hoochie-Coochie or FreeBorn.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) During the next

15 months, you will have an unprecedented chance to materialize a fantasy you’ve harbored for years. Essential to your efforts will be a capacity to summon more ambition than you ever have before. I’m not talking about the grubby self-promotion that typically passes for ambition, however. Arrogant self-importance and selfish posturing will not be part of your winning formula. Rather, the kind of ambition I’m referring to is a soaring aspiration that seeks the best and highest, not just for yourself but for everyone whose life you touch. I mean the holy hunger that drives you to express impeccable integrity as you seek to master the tasks you came to Earth to accomplish. Get started!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) During the next 15 months, composting should be a primary practice, as well as a main metaphor. If you have been lazy about saving leftover scraps from your kitchen and turning them into fertilizer, now is an excellent time to intensify your efforts. The same is true if you have been lax about transforming your pain into useful lessons that invigorate your lust for life. Be ever-alert for opportunities to capitalize on junk, muck and slop. Find secret joy in creating unexpected treasure out of old failures and wrong turns. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Have you ever made a fool of yourself while trying to fulfill your deepest yearnings? I hope so. If you haven’t, your yearnings probably aren’t deep enough. Most of us, on multiple occasions, have pursued our longings for connection with such unruly intensity that we have made foggy decisions and engaged in questionable behavior. That’s the weird news. The good news is that now and then, the impulse to leave our safety zone in a quest to quench our deepest yearnings can actually make us smarter and more effective. I believe this is one of those times for you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) During the next 13 months, what can you do to enhance your ability to be the boss of yourself? What practices can you engage in on a daily basis that will build your potency and authority and clout? How can you gain access to more of the helpers and resources you need to carry out your life’s master plan? These are excellent questions to ask yourself every day between now and July 2017. It’s time to find or create your ultimate power spot. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) The prison

population in the United States is more than 2 million, more than twice what it was in 1990. In contrast, Canada keeps about 41,000 people in jail, Italy 52,000, and France 66,000. That’s the bad news. The good news, at least for you and your tribe, is that a relatively small percentage of you will be incarcerated during the next 15 months. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, Aquarians all over the world will specialize in liberation. Not only will you be extra-ethical; not only will you be skillful at evading traps; you will also be adept at emancipating yourself from your own delusions and limitations. Congratulations in advance! It’s time to start singing some new freedom songs.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The English word “catharsis” is derived from the ancient Greek katharsis, which was a technical medical term that meant “purgation” or “purification,” as in flushing out the bowels. Aristotle converted katharsis into a metaphor that described how a drama performed in the theater could “clean out” the emotions of spectators. These days, catharsis may refer to any event that precipitates a psycho-spiritual renewal by building up and then releasing tension. I foresee at least one of these strenuous blessings in your immediate future.
