James Pelletier, 46, was arrested in Hollis, Maine, in May after he fired a BB gun point-blank at his two sons, ages 9 and 11 — but only, he said, as a “rite of passage” into maturity. He said if the kids knew how it felt to get shot, perhaps they would not be so quick to fire their own guns.

Andrew Bogut, signed as a free agent by the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers in March and expected to be a key player in the team's quest to defend its league championship, checked into his first game and played 58 seconds before crashing into a bench and breaking his leg. For that 58 seconds, the Cavs owe Bogut $383,000. Jose Calderon signed as a free agent with the Golden State Warriors in March, but the NBA-leading Warriors changed their mind (for unforeseen reasons) two hours after the deal and released Calderon. For his 119 minutes as a Warrior (6:06 p.m. to 8:05 p.m.), Calderon was paid $415,000.

Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group claimed success in 2016 in transplanting a monkey’s head, with blood vessels properly attached, although not the spinal cord. Canavero promised such a head transplant of humans by 2018, although problematic because, like the recipient monkey, the recipient human would not long survive. Of the subsequent brain transplant, one of the gentler critics of Canavero said the likelihood of success is “infinitesimal,” with harsher critics describing it in more colorful language.

Several treatments are available to combat the heart arrhythmia “atrial fibrillation,” but all require medical supervision, which John Griffin, 69, said he tried to acquire at the emergency room at New Zealand’s Waikato Hospital in April, only to be met with delay and frustration. Griffin went home that day, took notice of his neighbor’s 8,000-volt electric security fence and, with boots off, in a fit of doit-yourself desperation, nudged it with his arm. He got quite a jolt, he said, but he walked away, and his heart returned to natural rhythm. The medical director of the Heart Foundation of New Zealand said that Griffin was lucky and sternly warned against the “procedure.”

Fine Points of the Law

Convicted murderer John Modie, 59, remains locked up on an 18-to-life sentence, but his several-hours-long 2016 escape attempt from Ohio’s Hocking Correctional Institution wound up unpunishable — because of a “technicality.” In May 2017, the judge, lamenting the inflexible law, found Modie not guilty of the escape because prosecutors had, despite numerous opportunities, failed to identify the county in which Hocking Correctional Institution is located and thus did not “prove” that element of the crime, i.e., that the court in Logan, Ohio, had jurisdiction of the case. (Note to prosecutors: The county was Hocking).

Bright Ideas

Organizers of northern Germany’s Wacken Open Air Festival, billed as the world’s biggest metal music extravaganza, expect the 75,000 attendees to drink so much beer that they have built a nearly 4-mile-long pipeline to carry 105,000 gallons to on-site taps. (Otherwise, keg-delivery trucks would likely muck up the grounds.) Some pipes were buried specifically for the Aug. 3-5 festival, but others had been used by local farmers for ordinary irrigation.

CNY PRIDE FESTIVAL GOES OVER THE RAINBOW

Jennifer Collazo and her mother, Schenley Hernandez, found some shade under a tree at Syracuse’s Inner Harbor. As hundreds celebrated at the Central New York Pride Festival Saturday, June 16, Collazo took a selfie with her family, which included her 1-year-old daughter, Jaylianis, and 5-year-old nephew, Caleb. It took a few tries to get both kids to look at the camera. “I’m here to support my mom,” Collazo said as she held her daughter. “I worry about her. People seem to be a little more outspoken about their hate these days.” Jennifer was 12 when her mother told her she was a lesbian. Hernandez said she is “a little scared of him (President Trump) taking away gay marriage.” Her grandson “has been asking, ‘When am I going to have another grandma?’” Jaylianis wore a shirt with a rainbow heart and rainbow-striped shorts — a happy accident, Collazo said upon realizing the toddler was dressed in pride symbols. “I want them to know it’s OK to love whoever they want to love,” Collazo said. “I will accept them no matter what. It’s much more accepted than when my mom came out.” Her mother agreed, but said, “There are still a lot of haters.” The parade preceding the festival was peaceful, organizers said. Troy Waffner, acting director for the New York State Fair, served as parade grand marshal, wearing a rainbow tie for the occasion. Under Waffner’s watch, since 2015 the first Friday of the fair has been officially designated Pride Day. A handful of protesters greeted marchers; some yelled “sinners.” One held a sign reading “Homosexuality is a sin, Christ can set you free.” About 1:30 p.m., a few festival-goers engaged the protesters in conversation, looking more amused than angry. Starting last year, the Syracuse police assigned ad-

ditional officers to the event, which followed the June 12, 2016, massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla. The attacker shot and killed 49 people, most of them Latino, at the gay nightclub. Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America carried signs with photos of the Pulse victims. Jack Fitch and Ron Terry bought black T-shirts that read “Orlando Strong” specifically to wear to the Pride Festival. The couple, who live in Cazenovia, married in April. They had been together two years, but after the presidential election, decided to get married “sooner rather than later.” Fitch doesn’t buy Trump’s campaign promises that he’ll be a “friend” to the gay community. The president has revoked protections for transgender school students and signed an executive order on religious liberty that LGBT people and their allies fear provides cover for discrimination. His administration includes longtime foes of LGBT rights, including Vice President Mike Pence, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. “We’re three weeks into Pride Month and he (Trump) has yet to recognize it,” Fitch said. Still, the festival was upbeat. “It’s nice to be among people who are nonjudgmental and excited to be here.” Joe Adamo, a CNY Pride board member, described this year’s festival as much more upbeat than the somber and fearful atmosphere following the Pulse massacre. While Adamo and others said the increased police presence at the festival was reassuring, he noted an increase in hate speech targeting gays, lesbians and transgender people. “The hate groups are gaining confidence,” he said. “We had made some real progress with previous administrations. We’re taking so many steps backward.” The Pride board has discussed the potential of increased harassment or violence toward the local

At the festival, “It feels like I’m in my own skin,” he said. “I feel a lot of love.” He worries about hateful rhetoric about gays, adding, “We’re not going away.” Rainbows were everywhere: on flags, knee socks, faces, umbrellas, scarves, tights, tutus, wings. One participant painted his beard rainbow stripes. Another wore a rainbow tie-dye shirt that read: “Sometimes a rainbow is just a rainbow.” SNT Renée K. Gadoua is a freelance writer and editor. LGBT community. “We do have a plan in place should there be a harmful event specifically targeting the gay community,” Adamo said. Kevin Mullaney stood near a tent as Letizia and the Z-Band performed “Dancing Queen.” He attended the festival to “to get a panoramic view of the gay community in Syracuse.” When he lived in New York City, it was easier to meet gay men. “You could meet a guy on the train,” he said. “Here you have to be a little careful you don’t talk to the wrong person.”

COSPLAYERS DISPLAY THEIR SUPER COSTUMES AT COMIC CONFAB “Come as you are” really isn’t an option as Melissa Neufer and Alexander William prepare for this weekend’s fourth annual Salt City Comic-Con. The Syracuse-based couple are avid cosplayers, owning — not just renting — a variety of colorful costumes including Neufer’s Wonder Woman, Catwoman, and She-Hulk and William’s Batman, Captain America and The Flash. Cosplay gives them the chance to make a memorable first impression. “It is a great way to express myself,” Neufer said. “There is no judgment. People don’t look at me and think, ‘She’s really tall.’ They look at me and say, ‘Hey, she’s green, and that’s cool!’” William said he has been into cosplay for 20 years, beginning with a college birthday party back in 1997 when he appeared in a store-bought Batman outfit. He has since learned a lot about appearing as comic book characters, as well as maintaining the magic of the illusion, especially if youngsters are around. The temperature is often his biggest adversary, William admitted: “Most of my costuming has a mask, so if I can survive the heat everything else is fine.” Neufer started her own cosplay as Dr. Who for an Elmira convention in 2014, finally dressing up after many years of enthusiasm for the world of pop culture. She found many kindred fans at that event and it set in motion a new calling that would lead her to the world of cosplay creativity. “I was always into superheroes,” she recalled, “but never really had a group to ’geek out’ with.” At the convention she met William, who was dressed as Captain America. They began dating after several months of internet courting, and appeared together as Wonder Woman and Captain America for a hero-themed library event in Elmira in 2015. They have since portrayed various colorful characters at a variety of both for-hire and charitable events, as well as simply showing up in costume for events like the Salt City Comic-Con. William offered words of wisdom for those choosing to squeeze into their own

spandex and leather: “Make sure you try it on and wear it for a while beforehand so you can get a feel for how long you can last in it.” And watch out for the weather, Neufer advised. “I have definitely made decisions on what I am going to wear based on the forecast,” she said. “I can’t be green if it’s going to rain on me and wash it off.” The costumes they will don for the Salt City Comic-Con are a secret. Neufer intimated that she will debut a brand-new character, but cryptically left the details unsaid. She is on Facebook as “Amazon Phenomenon,” and William is there as “Shadow of the Bat.” The Salt City Comic-Con will be held at the Pirro Convention Center, 800 S. State St., on Saturday, June 24, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, June 25, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s comic’s professionals include artists Neal Adams, Graham Nolan and Joe Rubinstein; Syracuse-based comic writer Tom Peyer; movie star Nalini Krishan from Star Wars, Episode Two: Attack of the Clones; cosplayers Monika Lee, Alyssa King, and Ben Albert; and several wrestling legends including Sgt. Slaughter, Million Dollar Man, Fred Ottman and Brian Blair. The convention features more than 45,000 square feet of celebrities, artists, cosplayers and vendors from across the country. A special Kids Zone will feature a costume contest, bounce houses, a Pokemon dance party, and the opportunity to make “slime.” The costume contest awards $1,000 in cash prizes for the adults and $250 in cash prizes for the kids, and a video game tournament offers $700 in cash prizes. There is a clan gathering of the Mandalorian Mercs, and a “Cars of the Silver Screen” display that will offer a rare, up-close look at famed vehicles like the Ghostbusters‘ Ecto-1, Back to the Future’s Delorean, and the 1966 television version of the Batmobile.

6.21.17 - 6.27.17 | syracusenewtimes.com

The pop culture community has been rocked by the recent death of actor Adam West, best known as the star of TV’s Batman during the mid-1960s. William recalled his first main inspiration for comicdom was in watching reruns of the show, while wearing an old blue shirt wrapped around his shoulders as a cape. Both he and Neufer are now finishing up costumes based on the Batman TV series. Nolan, famed for his own artistry work on DC Comics’ Batman books, also credited West for being a partial inspiration for his becoming a comic book professional. It will also be his first time at the Salt City Comic-Con, and “I’m a people person so I always look forward to interacting with the fans and talking comics.” Fans should not feel apprehensive about stopping by Nolan’s table for a handshake, an autograph and a chat. “Don’t be nervous. I’m a regular guy just like them. I dug ditches, worked construction, and cooked in restaurants just like everybody else before I got this gig.” A two-day pass to the Salt City Comic-Con is $20. Saturday-only admission is $15, while the Sunday-only price is $10. Kids ages 6 to 12 are half-price, with ages 5 and younger admitted free. VIP tickets are also available, along with special VIP-exclusive events. For more information, call (315) 935-9956 or visit saltcitycomiccon.com. SNT

NEW FILM FEST CELEBRATES IRELAND’S HERITAGE

The inaugural Syracuse Contemporary Irish Film Festival will take place this week at the Everson Museum of Art’s Hosmer Auditorium, 401 Harrison St. Micha Crook, former contributor to the Syracuse New Times, is continuing her efforts in the local and international film industry to not only give another reason to embrace the heritage of the city and surrounding areas, but also show the ties between Central New York and Ireland. “How fitting it is that we’re talking about Ireland while surrounded by green trees, grass and flowers while sitting next to the river,” Crook noted, while perched on a bench next to the Seneca River in Lysander, which is one of the areas visited by the first Irish settlers. Other locations in western Onondaga County, including Geddes and the Tipperary Hill neighborhood, served as home to the immigrants in the days of building the Erie Canal. The festival, however, isn’t about the distant history. As its title indicates, the contemporary film festival features films dating back to 1995. “It’s exciting to show a modern version of Ireland and its people. The films show what’s on their minds, what things they are worried about in their subconscious,” Crook said. “The same thing takes place here. There are things we worry about and question, things we want to understand and create conversation about.” There is a reason why Crook slated the film fest at this time of year. Syracuse has one of the country’s most renowned St. Patrick’s Day parades, so Crook didn’t want to get lost in the local celebrations

that lead up to March 17. Nor did she want to take away from other annual events, including the St. Patrick’s Festival held July 21 and 22 on Tipperary Hill or the Syracuse Irish Festival returning to Clinton Square this September. The fest also follows local Pride Week celebrations. The first film, The Queen of Ireland, a documentary about Irish drag queen Rory O’Neal, a.k.a. Pandora “Panti” Bliss, will be shown Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m. “The Queen of Ireland was the film I wanted to get here,” Crook said. “It’s big, splashy and made a lot of waves worldwide at several of the big film festivals. It establishes a modern context of Ireland.” Festival co-sponsors include ACR Health, a Central New York-based nonprofit with an open door policy to serve and educate everyone, and The Q Center, an ACR offshoot that offers a safe haven for the LGBTQ community. A raffle will be held Thursday to benefit their efforts. “It’s a positive way to use film to build conversation and bring attention to organizations that do really good work,” she said. In the Obergefell vs. Hodges case of 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court passed the legalization of same-sex marriage in a 5-4 decision. Ireland passed it into law that same year; however, the isle was the first nation to pass marriage equality by popular vote. For this referendum, Irish citizens had to physically be back in Ireland to vote, said Crook. People from across the globe returned to their mother country for one day. “Traditionally, Ireland is a very con-

servative country. Even though it was a republic, religious leaders were still influencing the laws by their doctrine,” added Crook. “If you’re truly a republic, all citizens — men, women, genders, races, sexualities — must have equality. It’s so telling of what the nation of Ireland is now.” Running a film festival is not easy. Because Crook is collaborating with ACR Health, a nonprofit unrelated to the arts, she had the opportunity to apply for a CNY Arts decentralization grant. A small amount of funding was received, but it only partially covers the featured films’ screening fees. Then there are fees that include renting audio-visual equipment and a venue. Other recent efforts to raise money included an Irish tea party at the Sweet Praxis venue and a benefit showing of The Irish Pub at Kitty Hoynes Pub. Tickets for each featured film are $10. The price of a ticket does not include museum admission, however. A Date for Mad Mary will be presented Friday, June 23, at 7 p.m. The main character (played by Seana Kerslake), who is returning to society after a prison stint, tries to prove her soon-to-be-wed friend wrong by trying to find a date to the wedding, as she finds love in an unconventional way. This is the first U.S. showing before its stateside release in September. On Saturday, June 24, 2 p.m., a series of shorts will be shown at the Everson. Then the festival will wrap Saturday with a 7 p.m. screening of Older Than Ireland. The film by Alex Fagan, who also directed The Irish Pub, features 30 centenarians, all of whom were born before the

1916 Easter Uprising. Fagan’s documentary was filmed in Syracuse thanks to Crook’s involvement. One of the centenarians, Kathleen Snavely, passed away at 113-plus years of age in 2015, before the film was released. “The film industry in some ways is very fast, but it takes a while if you’re trying to build a filmmaking community,” said Crook. “We started Older Than Ireland in 2014, and shot the Syracuse portion in the beginning of 2015. It was finished right before its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh, which was at the end of July that year. It took another year to bring it back to the United States. Now it’s going through a regular cinematic release.” Crook also remains positive about the local film industry. “It’s not growing as fast as people would expect, but it’s growing bigger than people realize. We live in a society accustomed to immediate responses. There are a ton of people trying to make it happen. People get starstruck because the celebrities are here. The real work isn’t the flashy stuff, but the behind-the-scenes, editing and other production aspects.” There will be several events leading up to the festival. The Barclay Damon building on 125 E. Genesee St. will be glowing with green light this week. Crook will tell Irish folklore on Wednesday, June 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Infinite Pop at 183 Walton St. Also that evening, a special Downtown Committee Wednesday Walk will focus on Syracuse’s Irish history from 6 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit syririshfilmfest.com. eing a vegan is a commitment to eating no animal products. No meat. No fish. No eggs. No cheese. No butter. No honey.

In our meat-centric culture, it also can mean no social support or understanding. Vegans often find it a challenge to dine out: One can only eat so many salads and veggie burgers. Vegans sometimes encounter raised eyebrows and concerned glances from friends and family members and co-workers who “don’t get it.’’ Even more challenging for vegans can be living with family members who eat meat. Marybeth Fishman stopped eating meat more than 15 years ago. She was a vegetarian for many years before she became a vegan, eating largely a plantbased diet, but still consuming milk, eggs and cheese. One day, she watched the PETA documentary Meet Your Meat, which left her feeling sickened about the treatment of animals in the dairy and meat industry. It was then that she vowed to never again eat animal products. “Veganism is basically compassionate empathy for all sentient beings, not just humans,’’ Fishman says. “It means, to me, to cause the least possible harm to all living beings. If we don’t have to harm or kill animals, we shouldn’t.’’

6.21.17 - 6.27.17 | syracusenewtimes.com

Fishman has the support of a husband and two children, all of whom have transitioned to eating vegan. “One at a time,’’ Fishman says. “It started with me.’’ And outside her family circle, she has a growing network of friends in the community who also have embraced a plant-powered diet with enthusiasm and dedication. Fishman, 51, is the founder of the Syracuse Vegans Meetup Group on Meetup.com. The group has more than 300 members. “That’s pretty good for just over a year,’’ Fishman says with a smile. The Syracuse Vegans Meetup Group draws men and women of all ages and at all stages of their “vegan journey.’’ Some are newbies, others are longtime vegans with a wealth of experience and tips. Some come to veganism for environmental reasons, while others go vegan for moral and ethical reasons: They oppose the raising and slaughter of animals for food consumption and want to live a life that is free of animal cruelty. Some vegans take their dedication a step further by consuming mainly raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

There are many flavors of vegan, Fishman says, and, despite mainstream misconceptions and preconceived notions, there is an abundance of things for vegans to eat. The internet and websites like Pinterest offer tons of resources and recipes, and a spin through the grocery store aisles and freezer department show prepared-food options have greatly improved. Still, vegan life can be isolating — and fellowship is important. Enter the Syracuse Vegans Meetup Group. Fisherman started it on a lark and has been thrilled with the response. Several gatherings have been held at Strong Hearts Cafe, Syracuse’s first all-vegan restaurant. More than 20 people turned out earlier this month for a dinner at China Road in Mattydale, and another 20 or so gathered this week at J.T.’s Creamery and Cafe, in Liverpool, where the offerings feature vegan milkshakes, vegan “hot dogs,’’ vegan taco salad and more. Upcoming meetups include a dinner on July 13 at CoreLife Eatery, 7265 Buckley Road, North Syracuse; a potluck picnic at Sullivan Park, Jill Street, Chittenango, on July 29; a vegan potluck and pool party on Aug. 6; and a road trip to Rochester VegFest on Sept. 16. Fishman is putting together a day trip to Farm Sanctuary, a shelter for hundreds of rescued farm animals near Watkins Glen, and a vegan cooking demonstration with the creators of “The Vegan Zombie’’ YouTube cooking series. Beyond socializing, an important facet of the Syracuse Vegans Meetup Group is education and mentoring. If a new vegan needs food shopping assistance and recipe resources, for example, more experienced vegans offer guidance and expertise. Some people get involved strictly for animal advocacy, Fishman says, like taking part in protests when the circus comes to town. If you’re not a vegan but want to learn more about what it means to be a vegan, you’re invited to attend the meetups, too. Fishman lived with frequent stomachaches and headaches for years, and says she feels fantastic since she stopped eating animal products. Her diet includes

It’s the dance show with legs. The original Broadway production of Chicago was elbowed aside by A Chorus Line 40 years ago, and Chicago did not really become a hit until the triumphant 1990s revivals in London and New York City. Now the appetite for sordid celebrity and razzle-dazzle is more ravenous than ever. The episodes at the center of the story actually happened: Women in the Cook County jail for murdering their boyfriends-husbands, egged on by the tabloid press, looked to turn their notoriety into show business careers. They were the basis of Maurine Dallas Watkins’ naughty 1927 play and Ginger Rogers’ more respectable 1942 movie Roxie Hart. Ahead of its time? A convicted felon named Jeremy Meeks recently won a lucrative modeling contract because his sexy mug shot went viral. In his program notes, director Dustin Czarny groans at what a huge job it has

been getting this leviathan on his small stage. He started with strong and trusted allies like splendid music director Abel Searor, who also appears on stage, bantering with different players. His timing is resolute, in part because musicians have monitors to coordinate percussion with action, for example. The volume is thunderous, but lead players have the articulation and the miking. Veteran choreographer Shannon Tompkins crafts her homage to Bob Fosse, assisted by Stephfond Brunson. Their excellence is immediately present in the overture when the chorus (several of them one-time leading ladies) wows the crowd. All that hip action in black, revealing Rodarte-themed costumes designed by Alicia Cobb promise a rare, sultry eroticism that continues to be displayed throughout the production. Although the show is nominally about preparing murderesses for trial, much of the musical action is a contest between the reigning dame of the jailhouse, showgirl Velma Kelly (Erin Sills), who murdered her husband and sister, and the smart-acre upstart Roxie Hart (Alicia Rose Bronzetti). Tall, red-wigged Sills knows how to project power and authority; she was Evita on the same stage last summer. She starts strong with one of the show’s best numbers, “All That Jazz,” equaled by the second act’s “When Velma Takes the Stand.” The instinctively playful and irreverent Bronzetti makes her an effective foil, especially in her big number, “Me and My Baby.” In some performances choreographer Shannon Tompkins will be Velma and comedienne Korrie Taylor will play Roxie. Defense lawyer Billy Flynn (Benjamin Sills), described as a “sleazy mick,” is more a co-lead than a supporting player, with several of Chicago’s most striking numbers. Flynn’s non-negotiable fee is absolute, but he warbles that “All I Care About is Love,” his head looking like the bud of a daisy surrounded by the petals of the chorus girls’ fans. He wallows in the corruption of the system, in which he

knows how to exploit the razzle-dazzle. In a production with so many pluses, no player can get away with stealing a scene, but only one character is strikingly honest, uncynical and non-exploitive. That’s the hapless cuckold Amos Hart (Josh Mele), who was unaware his Roxie was bonking recklessly while he was not looking. Mele has sung Jean Valjean and Nathan Detroit, but here he dazzles with the pathos of the soft-shoe number, “Mr. Cellophane,” the cipher who is always overlooked. Mele has never been better. The character known as Mary Sunshine (Dan Williams) is what once was known as a “sob sister,” a journalist hired to play up the sentimental. Williams’ uproarious falsetto comes across like Carol Burnett playing Florence Foster Jenkins. Oresta Paddock, in the ensemble on opening night, will take the role for some performances. Jail matron Mama Morton (Michaela Oney) snags two of Chicago’s best numbers: the Sophie Tucker-esque “When You’re Good to Mama” and “Class,” a duet with Velma, containing some of Fred Ebb’s most Tom Lehrerish lines. Director Czarny and Oney underplay “Class,” giving it a Noel Cowardish spin. Kristina Marie Clark is the alternate Mama. Central New York Playhouse, in a former retail space, can put up only so many seats. Expect tickets to be in short supply for this fun run. SNT

LOESSER IS MORE WITH BOUNCY GUYS AND DOLLS REVIVAL

A

hot new director makes a local debut in the launch of Merry-Go-Round Playhouse’s summer season. Arriving in Auburn is director-choreographer Richard J. Hinds, a man with golden national credits whose previous assignment linked him to Come From Away, the surprise hit that competed strongly in the recent Tony Awards. His assignment here is to freshen up Frank Loesser’s Guys and Dolls (running through Wednesday, June 28), one of the greatest American musicals of all time, not seen at MGR in 22 years. His approach is to heighten all the show’s existing strengths while making all the dance numbers more exuberant. Together with scenic designer Shoko Kambara and costumer Tiffany Howard, Hinds conceives this show as a kind of urban fantasyland, where grit is replaced by stardust. The slangy title “guys” and “dolls” points to but also mocks the lowlife street people Damon Runyon wrote about 80 years ago, gamblers and chorus girls who are evangelized by the Salvation Army. Would-be law-breakers (merely crapshooters) are dressed in pastels. The stage is framed by two stylized proscenium rectangles, much like what you might have seen in period ads for the DeSoto or Studebaker. Guys and Dolls appears to be, as many observers have argued, a perfectly constructed show. Consider the judicious placement of novelty numbers like “A Bushel and a Peck” and “Adelaide’s Lament,” so soon after the romantic female lead’s admission of yearning, “I’ll Know.” What makes Guys a departure from accepted paradigms is that the character players, gambler Nathan Detroit (Carlos Lopez) and his “girlfriend” of 14 years, chorine Miss Adelaide (Julie Cardia), lead the action. Meanwhile, the handsome romantic couple, smoothie Sky Masterson (Michael Lomenda) and the Salvation Army lassie, Sarah Brown (Traci Blair), support the comedy. This means that while all four players are superbly cast, Julie Cardia as Adelaide wins top plaudits. A frequent MGR performer and multiple nominee at the Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) awards, Cardia brims with wicked sauciness in “Take Back Your Mink,” the mock striptease blowing

open the beginning of the second act. This is a production number backed by the women’s chorus, her fellow dancers at the (nudge-nudge) Hot Box Nightclub. She also fires up some of the often neglected numbers, such as “Sue Me,” a duet with Nathan, and “Marry the Man Today,” a duet with Sarah. As the shortest member of the company, Carlos Lopez’s Nathan Detroit enters with a kind of Danny DeVito assertiveness. But director Hinds and Lopez are mindful that Nathan keeps refusing his promise to Adelaide and thus reap comic rewards by having him evade, running rather than fighting. Even though the movie version is now 62 years old, Lopez shows us that Frank Sinatra’s Nathan had it all wrong. Traci Blair and Michael Lomenda bring top-notch Broadway voices to the Loesser immortals. In her opening numbers, “Follow the Fold” and “I’ll Know,” she could easily soar up to the demands of opera. Taller than other Sarahs, she’s also a limber actress, convincing us that the stiff-necked prude can cut loose in pre-Castro Havana with a Bacardi milkshake in “If I Were a Bell.” Lomenda’s baritone leads in the love duets at the end of the first act, “My Time of Day” and “I’ve Never Been in Love Before.” A shot of him in the white silk suit he sports in the second act would make a worthy representation of the entire production. Then again, his peak moment is his solo in the big production number, “Luck Be a Lady.” Although the name of original 1950 choreographer Michael Kidd can be spoken of in the same breath as Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins, Guys and Dolls is not usually thought of as a major dance show. Richard Hinds changes that perception with the opening numbers, especially the witty parody of Johann Sebastian Bach in “Fugue for Tinhorns,” beginning with the immortal lyric, “I’ve got a horse right here/ His name is Paul Revere.”

Hinds’ greatest moments come in the middle of the second act with the “Crapshooter’s Ballet” and “Luck Be a Lady,” enhanced by the smoke-catching lighting design of Dan Ozminkowski. Tenor Jefferson Behan as Nicely-Nicely is an eye- and ear-catching presence throughout the show, notably his leading of the title number, “Guys and Dolls,” and reaches its climax in the show-stopping mock-spiritual, “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat.” With Guys and Dolls’ showcase of impressive performances and spirited direction, this golden oldie is restored in all its luster. MARTY MASTERPOLE The mayoral candidate wants to move from watching the city’s money to running City Hall

M

By Walt Shepperd arty Masterpole says voters should check him off on their paper ballots — we don’t use the machines anymore — in the mayoral election this November for many reasons.

The Democrat served four years on the Common Council, four years on the Onondaga County Legislature and is currently in his sixth year as Syracuse city auditor. Those years of public service have given him the institutional knowledge of how government works, and enough chances to immerse himself in its vagaries. And Masterpole knows Syracuse. Born and raised on Tipperary Hill across the street from Burnet Park, he now lives on the same Coleridge Avenue block. The neighborhood continuity provided a sense of stability, with attendance at St. Patrick’s School, Bishop Ludden High School, Onondaga Community College and SUNY Oswego. “I was never in the theater,” he maintains, “so I’m not an actor. I don’t try to be what people want to hear. Syracuse is not elitist. It’s a blue-collar town, and sometimes people say I’m too honest. I wish it were different, but there’s no silver lining here. Syracuse is urban America, and to learn it you have to get where you don’t live. I learn Syracuse from knocking on doors, campaigning.”

6.21.17 - 6.27.17 | syracusenewtimes.com

It all started when he was 13, Masterpole recalls, when he got involved with Tom Young’s mayoral campaign. It was then he knew what he wanted to be when he grew up: mayor. What is your job description for the mayor of Syracuse? The best description of mayor is a CEO, an executive officer of the city. While not a typical corporation, in part, the city needs to be run like a business. The mayor must be an advocate, a manager and a leader. The city of Syracuse is facing a fiscal crisis. There’s no secret there. The next mayor needs to be well equipped to understand and handle fiscal issues. The mayor has to fight for the city of Syracuse to ensure that we have a voice in the mounting pressure from the state and county, and to make sure we receive a fair share of the sales tax, and maintain a seat at the table with Albany. The mayor must have a strong management background to manage our resources, both human resources of our workforce and fiscal resources. It requires the experience as well as the

institutional knowledge of how government should or can work. As a leader the mayor must build consensus across party lines and geographic lines. We’re in an era where politics has become so divisive that we need someone who is willing to put people over politics. Last, and certainly not least, we need to build morale in both our workforce and our citizens. A work environment with good morale means employees working above and beyond the call of duty rather than running out the door when the buzzer rings. If you like the city you work and live in, you’re more likely to be a better citizen. Should we metropolitanize the city and county governments? This is one of my favorite questions, having served on the Common Council and the Legislature. Most elements from the Consensus report can work, and are just common sense. There are a few that are non-starters for me. There are two that are the largest cost-drivers: public safety and education. They were left out. If we’re modernizing government and create this entity that is going to save our taxpayers money,

why would you leave out the top two cost-drivers? I think there are other opportunities for a consolidated effort. The next mayor has to take an approach that we have to raise revenue or cut costs. Our water department, for instance, is one of the few that doesn’t fall under OCWA (Onondaga County Water Authority). We know that OCWA has been self-sustaining. They balance their budget every year. We could start with departments like the water department to build a consensus. Should we consolidate the city schools with those in the county? As a father of two young children, my wife teaches at Corcoran High School. The city school district has outstanding people, outstanding programs, great technical programs. But can we break down artificial barriers, the school district lines? There are many possibilities. The short answer, if there is one, is to share services with other school districts. It could level the playing field, make the city of Syracuse students feel as equal as those maybe more affluent in other districts. It could break down racial barriers as well.

What should we do with Route 81? To decide, you have to have all the options in place. To repair what’s existing, leaving it where it is, fixing it, is not an option. Rebuilding, because of federal standards, it would have to be nearly twice as wide and over 10 feet higher. That option is not on the table for me. The tunnel option doesn’t make economic sense at double or triple the cost. There’s a disconnect with many North Side businesses. My option would be a community grid. It would have the most impact from an economic development standpoint. Two of our largest employers in the city, Syracuse University and the hospitals nearby, if we bring 81 down to street level with a community grid, could get creative, create more jobs. It could also connect neighborhoods. What needs to be developed in the center city, who should be doing it and who should be paying for it? We’ve seen great growth downtown with residential, housing, seeing people living downtown, walking to work, walking to shows. I think we need to develop a downtown that creates jobs.

Any development, any developer, that is willing to invest in downtown Syracuse on a project that will create jobs, I would be fully supportive of that. Syracuse has the poorest communities of color in the country. As mayor, what could you do? Back to my point about economic development, if we can create jobs we can help folks get out of poverty. It’s going to take significant work. Can the mayor do it alone? Probably not. But can the mayor do it as part of a team? Absolutely. Let’s be real honest with each other. What happens when you have concentrated poverty? You have violence. You have crime. Could we get completely out of poverty if I were mayor for the next four years? Probably not. Could we reduce it? I certainly believe we could. SNT

IF YOU LIVE HERE, THIS LAWSUIT MAY RESULT IN YOUR EVICTION. YOU MAY WISH TO CONTACT A LAWYER TO DISCUSS ANY RIGHTS AND POSSIBLE DEFENSES YOU MAY HAVE. Help for Homeowners in Foreclosure New York State Law requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. Summons and Complaint You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. Sources of Information and Assistance The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to

work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services at (800) 342-3736 or visit the Department’s website at http://www.dfs. ny.gov. Rights and Obligations YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO LEAVE YOUR HOME AT THIS TIME. You have the right to stay in your home during the foreclosure process. You are not required to leave your home unless and until your property is sold at auction pursuant to a judgment of foreclosure and sale. Regardless of whether you choose to remain in your home, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY and pay property taxes in accordance with state and local law. Foreclosure Rescue Scams Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. ARIES (March 21-April 19) There are places

in the oceans where the sea floor cracks open and spreads apart from volcanic activity. This allows geothermally heated water to vent out from deep inside the earth. Scientists explored such a place in the otherwise frigid waters around Antarctica. They were elated to find a “riot of life” living there, including previously unknown species of crabs, starfish, sea anemones and barnacles. Judging from the astrol ogical omens, Aries, I suspect that you will soon enjoy a metaphorically comparable eruption of warm vitality from the unfathomable depths. Will you welcome and make use of these raw blessings even if they are unfamiliar and odd?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) I’m reporting from the first annual Psychic Olympics in Los Angeles. For the past five days, I’ve competed against the world’s top mind-readers, dice-controllers, spirit whisperers, spoon-benders, angel-wrestlers and stock market prognosticators. Thus far I have earned a silver medal in the category of channeling the spirits of dead celebrities. (Thanks, Frida Kahlo and Gertrude Stein!) I psychically foresee that I will also win a gold medal for most accurate fortunetelling. Here’s the prophecy that I predict will cinch my victory: “People born in the sign of Taurus will soon be at the pinnacle of their ability to get telepathically aligned with people who have things they want and need.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20) While reading Virginia Woolf, I found the perfect maxim for you to write on a slip of paper and carry around in your pocket or wallet or underwear: “Let us not take it for granted that life exists more fully in what is commonly thought big than in what is commonly thought small.” In the coming weeks, dear Gemini, I hope you keep this counsel simmering constantly in the back of your mind. It will protect you from the dreaminess and superstition of people around you. It will guarantee that you’ll never overlook potent little breakthroughs as you scan the horizon for phantom miracles. And it will help you change what needs to be changed slowly and surely, with minimum disruption. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Now that you’ve

mostly paid off one of your debts to the past, you can go window-shopping for the future’s best offers. You’re finally ready to leave behind a power spot you’ve outgrown and launch your quest to discover fresh power spots. So bid farewell to lost causes and ghostly temptations, Cancerian. Slip away from attachments to traditions that longer move you and the deadweight of your original family’s expectations. Soon you’ll be empty and light and free -- and ready to make a vigorous first impression when you encounter potential allies in the frontier.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) I suspect you will soon

have an up-close and personal encounter with some form of lightning. To ensure it’s not a literal bolt shooting down out of a thundercloud, please refrain from taking long romantic strolls with yourself during a storm. Also, forgo any temptation you may have to stick your finger in electrical sockets. What I’m envisioning is a type of lightning that will give you a healthy metaphorical jolt. If any of your creative circuits are sluggish, it will jumpstart them. If you need to wake up from a dreamy delusion, the lovable lightning will give you just the right salutary shock.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Signing up to read

at the open mike segment of a poetry slam? Buying an outfit that’s a departure from the style you’ve cultivated for years? Getting dance lessons or a past-life reading or instructions on how to hang-glide? Hopping on a jet for a spontaneous getaway to an exotic hotspot? I approve of actions like those, Virgo. In fact, I won’t mind if you at least temporarily abandon at least 30 percent of your inhibitions.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) I don’t know what marketing specialists are predicting about

6.21.17 - 6.27.17 | syracusenewtimes.com

color trends for the general population, but my astrological analysis has discerned the most evocative colors for you Libras. Electric mud is one. It’s a scintillating mocha hue. Visualize silver-blue sparkles emerging from moist dirt tones. Earthy and dynamic! Cybernatural is another special color for you. Picture sheaves of ripe wheat blended with the hue you see when you close your eyes after staring into a computer monitor for hours. Organic and glimmering! Your third pigment of power is pastel adrenaline: a mix of dried apricot and the shadowy brightness that flows across your nerve synapses when you’re taking aggressive practical measures to convert your dreams into realities. Delicious and dazzling!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Do you ever hide behind a wall of detached cynicism? Do you protect yourself with the armor of jaded coolness? If so, here’s my proposal: In accordance with the astrological omens, I invite you to escape those perverse forms of comfort and safety. Be brave enough to risk feeling the vulnerability of hopeful enthusiasm. Be sufficiently curious to handle the fluttery uncertainty that comes from exploring places you’re not familiar with and trying adventures you’re not totally skilled at. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “We must unlearn the constellations to see the stars,” writes Jack Gilbert in his poem “Tear It Down.” He adds, “We find out the heart only by dismantling what the heart knows.” I invite you to meditate on these ideas. By my calculations, it’s time to peel away the obvious secrets so you can penetrate to the richer secrets buried beneath. It’s time to dare a world-changing risk that is currently obscured by easy risks. It’s time to find your real life hidden inside the pretend one, to expedite the evolution of the authentic self that’s germinating in the darkness. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) When I was 4 years old, I loved to use crayons to draw diagrams of the solar system. It seems I was already laying a foundation for my interest in astrology. How about you, Capricorn? I invite you to explore your early formative memories. To aid the process, look at old photos and ask relatives what they remember. My reading of the astrological omens suggests that your past can show you new clues about what you might ultimately become. Potentials that were revealed when you were a wee tyke may be primed to develop more fully. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) I often ride my bike into the hills. The transition from the residential district to open spaces is a narrow dirt path surrounded by thick woods on one side and a steep descent on the other. Today as I approached this place there was a new sign on a post. It read “Do not enter: Active beehive forming in the middle of the path.” Indeed, I could see a swarm hovering around a tree branch that juts down low over the path. How to proceed? I might get stung if I did what I usually do. Instead, I dismounted from my bike and dragged it through the woods so I could join the path on the other side of the bees. Judging from the astrological omens, Aquarius, I suspect you may encounter a comparable interruption along a route that you regularly take. Find a detour, even if it’s inconvenient. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) I bet you’ll be

extra-creative in the coming weeks. Cosmic rhythms are nudging you toward fresh thinking and imaginative innovation, whether they’re applied to your job, your relationships, your daily rhythm, or your chosen art form. To take maximum advantage of this provocative luck, seek out stimuli that will activate high-quality brainstorms. I understand that composer André Grétry got inspired when he put his feet in ice water. Author Ben Johnson felt energized in the presence of a purring cat and by the aroma of orange peels. I like to hang out with people who are smarter than me. What works for you?
