CASHLESS THRUWAY TOLLS PLAN SHOULD TAKE A BACK SEAT The old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Nobody would use that expression when referencing the road conditions of the New York State Thruway.

You’re more likely to hear things like, “It was so rough I almost went off the road,” or “I might need new suspension now.”

While construction repairs and upgrades are quite regular on the 570-mile highway system, there is a lot of talk lately about a significant upgrade that has nothing to do with the road itself: cashless tollbooths.

The toll plazas that have littered the Thruway since the first segment of the road was completed in the mid-1950s may be completely modified in the next few years so that only electronic money transfers can be used. All tolls would be paid for by either a motorist’s E-Z Pass or by photographing their license plate and receiving a bill in the mail.

The system has already been implemented downstate in some densely populated areas, such as the Tappan Zee Bridge between Rockland and Westchester counties, and it’s being planned in more New York City locations. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and State Transportation Department officials have pledged to expand cashless tolls throughout upstate to cover the entire Thruway.

Cashless tolling is the inevitable future of our Thruway. Other states have been slowly implementing similar systems; it is currently used on the entire Interstate-90 stretch across neighboring Massachusetts.

And use of the E-Z Pass over cash has soared since that method was introduced in New York in 1993.

Cashless tolling would also cut back congestion at busy exits and interchanges, which would improve commute times

and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accidents. Who can argue with that?

Gov. Cuomo is correct to assert that cashless tolling statewide is a matter of when, not if. But the underlying question remains: Is that “when” right now? The current conditions of the road clearly answer that question.

The cost of revamping all of the toll plazas along I-90 and I-87 south of Albany would be extraordinary. The current structures would have to be dismantled and replaced with gantries that need to be wired with electronic equipment and cameras. And there would need to be offices to process license plates of vehicles that come through and send bills to those drivers’ homes.

The estimated cost? Anywhere between $500 and $600 million, an amount

that, adjusted for inflation, is actually 10 percent of what it cost to build the entire New York State Thruway system a half-century ago. A cashless system project on a 45-mile stretch of road from Yonkers to Orange County was budgeted for $31 million.

The long-term benefits of cashless tolls make spending that kind of money appealing. Yet that money would be better invested in projects that are more necessary right now, specifically overhauling the system’s crumbling infrastructure.

This rapidly aging highway requires much more attention than it is getting.

Mike Elmendorf, CEO of the Associated General Contractors, estimates that the New York Thruway Authority should be reconstructing about 100 lane miles and 30 bridges every year just to maintain the

interstate in its current condition.

And that isn’t happening. In many circumstances, some major reconstruction projects turn into simple patchwork, essentially putting on more band-aids, which will end up costing more in the long run once those band-aids can no longer do the job.

Since roads and bridges are taken for granted in our daily lives, it’s easy for us to forget just how dire their situation is. A 2015 report by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ New York State Council graded the conditions of different types of infrastructure in New York by using a simple report card-like system. Bridges received a grade of D-plus and roads got a D-minus.

More than 50 percent of New York’s bridges are 75 years old, with 2,012 of them classified as “structurally deficient” and requiring consistent maintenance or improvements to safely operate for freight and commuters. And one-third of New York’s major highways are considered to be in poor or fair condition.

The Thruway is a valuable artery in that web of infrastructure needs. The Thruway Authority estimates it will need $3.4 billion to fund road and bridge upgrades over the next 20 years. The current construction in Onondaga County between exits 35 and 39, a stretch of less than 10 miles, costs $9.9 million alone.

Inadequate funding and modest construction work will only leave infrastructure further neglected, meaning certain bridges could be forced to close or become weight-restricted. This would cause much more traffic headaches and economic disruption to the region than toll plazas that still collect cash from motorists.

The bottom line: Cashless tolls aren’t going to be that useful if parts of the road that are being tolled can’t be used.

They may be the wave of the future, but ensuring a vital stretch of road like the New York State Thruway remains fully functional and up-to-date is the more pressing matter. SNT

LETTERS Columnist Is All Wet In “Politics As Usual Regarding Lake Ontario Flooding Response” (Luke Parsnow’s July 12 Things That Matter column), the author willfully ignores the extensive action that New York state has taken to provide relief along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

Under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s leadership, New York is stepping up for homeowners, businesses and local governments dealing with the consequences of the flooding. New York state is providing $45 million for relief and recovery programs for Lake Ontario communities as well as $10 million for other communities impacted by past extreme weather. Declaring a state of emergency, New York has also deployed more than 1.6 million sandbags, 166 pumps and some 2,100 feet of temporary dams to protect New Yorkers.

The governor has also justifiably called out the International Joint Commission, which controls water levels, for serious mismanagement, requesting that the IJC release water to prevent further devastation. And he called on President Trump to appoint commissioners to the IJC who are actually from the Great Lakes and understand the region.

This isn’t about politics. This is about helping New Yorkers recover, rebuild and move on with their lives. And from the outset of this disaster, Gov. Cuomo has spearheaded relief efforts and delivered for our communities.

Give Peace A Chance According to Derek Jensen in his book, The Culture of Make-Believe, 9,000 Iraqi children under age 5 were killed monthly by sanctions imposed by the United States. My (and your) tax dollars at work. Add in Afghani children, Syrian children and African children and I can hardly look my 2-year-old granddaughter in the eye when I sing to her every morning what a “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” kind of day we’re going to have.

At a lecture last spring Ed Kinane taught us why he gets arrested participating in civil disobedience protesting the drones, launched from Hancock Air Force Base, that do the killing. International law, established at Nuremberg after World War II, states that if your government is committing crimes against humanity, and you are aware of the atrocity, you are complicit.

I am guilty. I know full well that children in the Congo lose their lives mining for uranium to make my flip cell phone. I understand that the government, at least financially and idealistically, considers other peoples’ children collateral damage. I am aware that sanctions on Iran have hurt and killed and made to suffer mightily innocent civilians.

One of my good friends is Irani. Her mother only recently moved to the United States.

Why would I want to starve my friend’s mother? I wouldn’t do that in my kitchen. Why would I contribute to its happening across the Atlantic?

I’ve read book after book by author after author proving to me beyond the shadow of a doubt that I am living on stolen ground. That the Mohawk or Oneida family that before me trod this little plot of ground, lay her head down under these particular stars, didn’t wander off of her own accord, but was, like most indigenous peoples, either killed or forced to leave.

We claim to be a peace-loving people, but we perpetrate more violence than any six super-powers ought to. We claim to love children, but we are willing, to save money, to allow multitudes of them to live without medical care or the insurance that would provide it. We claim to believe in our founding principals of freedom, equality and justice for all, but we sacrifice them to expediency whenever it is lucrative to do so.

I’m not perfect. I make mistakes, lots of them. But when I do, I apologize and try to set them right. If my granddaughter spills her milk or crayons the woodwork, she says, “I’m sorry,” and she helps clean up her messes.

If a 2-year-old can be taught to play peacefully to care about the people around her, why not the U.S. government? If we expect good behavior—honesty, courtesy, concern for others—from our children, shouldn’t we expect as much from our elected leaders?

It’s our responsibility to know what the people we put in power are doing in our names. Any of us who are part of the system, and that means most all of us, are complicit. The only way forward is to accept the guilt and do what we can to atone for it. Maybe if enough of us feel guilty, we’ll work to clean up this mess we’ve gotten ourselves into. Maybe there will be a song about us doing it. I, at least, would like to be able to sing “wonderful feeling, wonderful day” to my granddaughter without knowing I’m a liar.

LIFE’S A BEACH DURING LEFT COAST COLLEGE VISITS Normally we keep information to a minimum here, but I’ll make an exception to expose a scam targeting parents of high schoolers in the Northeast.

Here’s how it works: The student announces he or she wants to tour college campuses in a warm-weather location such as Southern California. Some of these campuses are so close to the beach you can stand in the admissions office and hear wedges of lime splashing into Coronas.

the same schools, and that they’re coming, too.

From there it’s a slippery slope to you lying alone in a hotel room, haggard from chauffeuring the teen grifters through nightmare traffic and listening to them giggling away in the adjacent room as they plot the next deployment of your credit card. That’s when you doubt whether these people have any desire to attend college in California — or anywhere.

But that’s not really the point. The point is you’ve been played.

That is not to say my daughter Miranda, her friend Julia and I didn’t gain priceless insight during our five-day tour of Southern California universities at the height of tanning season. For example, we learned that all student tour guides are the same person. Let’s call her Lacey. She has a gift for projecting energy, optimism and boundless love of her institution, all while walking backward.

The effect is overwhelming. Lacey could lead a tour of the federal supermax prison at Florence, Colo., and afterward you’d go back in your rental car gushing, “This place totally rocks. I just wish my felony transcript was stronger, but if I spend two years in state prison at Pelican Bay, I bet I can transfer here.”

No exaggeration: If a huge asteroid were to hit, say, the University of California at San Diego, Lacey would be out there the next day telling prospective freshmen and their parents: “We are the only campus in the UC system with its own asteroid crater. You can see students during finals going inside to play Frisbee golf or just breathing toxic space vapors to de-stress. And the research opportunities are amazing!”

We began our trek at USC, a gilded fortress in South L.A. perhaps best known for producing famous football players such as O.J. Simpson, famous actors such as O.J. Simpson and famous murd . . . well, you get the idea. As luck would have it, our USC tour took place a few days before O.J. won his parole hearing in Nevada and also while news was breaking that a former USC medical school dean — while on staff as a physician — had allegedly used illegal drugs and consorted with known criminals, and that a fellow drug user had overdosed in his presence.

Understandably, Lacey was in an upbeat mood that morning. She explained that USC is a family of incredibly bright, ambitious students, superstar faculty and ultra-devoted alumni who open major doors of opportunity for graduates. We saw for ourselves what she meant by family.

“Fight on, Lacey!” a passing student shouted to Lacey as she ambulated backward, heels clicking on walkways made of lacquered hundred-dollar bills.

“Fight on, Mark!” she replied.

The “Fight on!” exchanges were really cute the first 43 times, although I did wonder what everyone there was fighting. The crushing burden of trust fund management?

Anyway, I was ready to enroll right then, but first we had to check out UCLA. In a sign that UCLA might be even more exclusive than its crosstown rival, we learned earlier this summer that no guided tour spots were available until September. We did the best we could on our own.

I got a haircut at the student center. That used up 90 seconds. Then the girls posed for pictures with the big bear sculpture. We noticed that the lush Westwood campus proudly celebrates the late basketball coaching legend John Wooden, whose wise, folksy adages adorn the athletic center. “Be quick, don’t hurry.” “What counts is what you learn after you know it all.” “Dude, this IPA tastes like rat piss.”

We liked UC-Santa Barbara even more because that was the next school on our list. And Lacey was back. We saw the on-campus natural lagoon, and we learned how one student once raced from his dorm to the beach in 54 seconds.

But don’t let the beautiful setting fool you. UCSB, Lacey stressed, is a family of incredibly bright, ambitious students, superstar faculty and ultra-devoted alumni who open major doors of opportunity for graduates. We also learned that the professor-to-student ratio at UCSB is quite low: 44.3 professors for every undergraduate. In fact, we were shown the emergency call boxes available to any student who feels threatened by roving packs of under-utilized lecturers desperate to impart knowledge. By the way, UCSB’s sports teams are called The Gauchos. No one knows why.

Our final stop was UC-San Diego. To get there required a grueling drive in heavy traffic but we shaved time by taking an alternate route through Finland. We all loved the spectacular beach scene at La Jolla. Gorgeous girls in bikinis. Surfers. Hang gliders. Gorgeous girls in bikinis. Cool shops. Gorgeous girls in bikinis. It’s possible there was even a library up on campus next to the asteroid crater.

Alas, we were horrified to learn that UCSD is really hard to get into, especially for out-of-state kids, but I’m not worried. I’m writing a killer essay on one of the major problems facing humanity: “This IPA Tastes Like Rat Piss.” SNT

DANCE AND DEATH MERGE IN HANGAR’S WORLD PREMIERE

Mimi Quillin’s autobiographical Dégagé makes its world premiere at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre, running through Saturday, July 29. On a nearly bare stage three players, called A Dancer (Wendy Waring), Man A (Stacy Todd Holt) and Man B (Jose Useche), tell of an artist’s inward journey after encounters with the dying at a hospice in Eastchester, N.Y. The playwright’s words are framed, and interrupted, with dance interludes, to which she inserts disarming moments of gentle humor.

While new to writing for the stage, Quillin brings golden credits as a performer and choreographer ranging more than three decades. Non-dancing roles include appearances on NBC’s Law and Order. After taking a writing workshop with Paula Vogel (How I

Learned to Drive), Quillin penned and performed in Call Fosse at the Minsky, about her work with maestro Bob Fosse in the 1985 revival of Sweet Charity. It was awarded Best Production out of 800 entries at the United Solo Festival in Theatre Row last year.

Closer to home, Quillin choreographed Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the Hangar’s preceding production. That was her third collaboration with Michael Barakiva, Hangar’s artistic director. In his heartfelt curtain speech, Barakiva tells how invested and engaged he has felt with Dégagé. He is reviving the tradition of world premieres the Hangar abandoned about 10 years ago.

In her candid program notes, Quillin explains that “having committed the crime of aging,” she was looking for an outlet for her energies when she found an opening for an artist-in-residence at the Calvary Hospice. The people hiring her said that “medicine cures the body, but art heals the spirit.” As previous artists had been diverse photographers and writers, she was encouraged to think up her own assignments, even to give the staff a dance break. At a hospice, however, patients do not expect to walk when they exit. And as Quillin shows, her spirit was the one affected.

As the action begins we hear uptown jazz, what sounds like Duke Ellington.

We first see the dancer and the men in silhouette. Although more than 90 percent of Dégagé’s 90 minutes are filled with the spoken word, Quillin wants us to primarily see dance as a double metaphor for life and art. All three performers are themselves dancers, and each can readily break into rhythmic movement as an extension of speech. In one moment all three break into a Russian folk routine.

ground about how she happens to be in a hospice, in much less detail. She may use the pronoun “I” but does not identify herself as Quillin. A fictional character, the dancer nonetheless repeats biographical experiences with those of the playwright.

She remembers the discouragement of a harassing mother who charged that the daughter was too tall to be a dancer and that her feet were too big. A father who had died years earlier from cancer is remembered more congenially.

As the dancer, Wendy Waring makes an idealized alter-ego. A Broadway veteran, she has specialized in playing tall, gorgeous women, such as Ulla in Mel Brooks’ The Producers. Waring is also a skilled comic: She was the nurse in the doctor skit in Syracuse Stage’s October 1997 production of Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys. The years have been kind to her. She can put a gleam on some of Quillin’s less-than-sterling zingers, as when a flamboyant gay man is described as a “dead ringer for Liberace.”

Waring always remains the dancer, so the men must conjure up all the other characters, too many to count. Neither ever changes into a costume. Stacey Todd Holt, a Broadway veteran, is older and bearded, while Jose Useche, a recent Ithaca College graduate, is younger, shorter and more given to physical expression and mime.

Director Barakiva and Holt put out a willing suspension of disbelief to the test when Holt morphs into a series of different women, starting with the dancer’s mother, simply by changing the timber and pitch of his voice. We just have to look past the gray-streaked beard.

Production values matter even in a minimalist show. Necessary props, such as mobile urine bags, arrive so perfectly they almost generate laughter. SNT

THE MELVINS: HERE COMES THE SLUDGE The Melvins’ 30-plus-year career proves they’re doing something right. The band boasts a distinctive sound, attitude and work ethic to stand out amid a congested music world.

During a July 7 phone conversation with Osborne, dogs barked in the background, water ran from the faucet and there was the sound of plates brushing against each other. Osborne’s home also serves as a creative space for his wife Mackie, an artist, musician and yogi. Her eye-catching artworks have adorned album covers for several bands including The Melvins, Tool, Social Distortion, Circle Jerks and The Vandals. The two recently celebrated 24 years of marriage.

The interview date also marked the release of The Melvins’ first-ever double album, A Walk with Love and Death. It was issued through Ipecac Recordings, which was founded in 1999 by Greg Werckman and Mike Patton (Faith No More, Peeping Tom). The Death half of the LP offers a slew of new material that adds to the band’s latter-day melodic efforts. The Love half features tracks of new noise, and it also serves as a soundtrack to an unreleased short film.

Why release a double album now?

Well, it’s high time, I suppose. The two albums are completely different from each other. We wanted to write and record a soundtrack and then one that was regular. When you’re buying it, you’re buying two different albums. It’s cool.

You’re from Washington state. The Melvins tap into and blend grunge, hard rock, sludge and other genres.

You’re also a punk rock guy. How has punk rock changed for you?

My thoughts and attitude haven’t changed at all. If anything it’s gotten stronger. I like about as many bands now as I ever did. I don’t like the pop-punk stuff, you know, the Green Day style of whatever is happening now. Although I do like The Dickies, The Descendants, The Ramones and all that type of stuff.

Does the vastness of the internet help or hurt the scene?

I’m sure it helps. It’s easier to get your band out there now. But I’m not a goodol’-days type of guy, either. I’m more of a what-have-you-done-lately type of guy.

What we’ve done lately is a double album with a soundtrack for a movie. Boom!

We had an idea of what would work a long time ago, and we’ve just expanded on that. It’s nice to know I wasn’t wrong about any of it.

What are your thoughts on the political climate?

I don’t see anything different between any of these people. It’s total idiocy. If people want to believe Democrats are the saviors of this world, they’re out of their minds. But if they think it’s the Republicans, they’re also out of their minds.

There’s enough blame to go around. I just stand back and watch people go crazy.

LA Weekly produced a great video about you, Mackie and your shared creative space. You said you prefer a stimulating atmosphere. Aside from your home, what else inspires you?

Music in general. Life in general. I can get inspired just driving through town. Inspiration is such an odd thing to conceive.

I don’t draw it from any one place.

I’ve gone to giant companies or somewhere people are working and they’ve looked like some of the most oppressive places I’ve ever seen. I don’t get how you’re supposed to be creative in those circumstances. It’s a fuckin’ job. I strive to make my living in an unconventional way. I work harder at what I’m doing more than most people do at just earning a living.

You believe an unrestricted, strong work ethic speaks loudly.

It’s impossible to become successful or rich only working 40 hours a week.

Someone put those constraints on your brain, and you’re going to be a mediocre person the rest of your life. This is your workday. This is your weekend. This is your vacation. Fuck all that.

If people believe there is a CEO of a corporation in charge of 20,000 employees and works only 40 hours a week, they’re out of their fucking minds. You’re talking to a guy who did 51 shows in 51 days, every state in the United States, plus Washington, D.C. Under normal working conditions, that wouldn’t be allowed. I don’t need some union rep telling me when I can or cannot work. If I had those restraints, I’d be here with nothing.

Millennials have been stereotyped with a certain attitude toward work in that they may refuse work because they don’t want to or don’t have to.

You don’t have to do anything. Hopefully with that attitude, you’re planning on inheriting a lot of money. The rest of us have to make a living. Just because someone is paying your salary, it doesn’t mean they owe you anything. I know very little, but I know that. So yeah, that’s my work ethic. I never stop. I don’t really take holidays. I don’t really understand weekends, either.

How have you dealt with criticism about the lifestyle of a musician?

People assume that I’m fabulously wealthy or I have nothing. There’s no in-between or it’s not possible to be a working-class musician. Well, I’ve succeeded in doing things that weren’t possible my entire life. I embrace everything that’s out there, whatever it may be. Don’t worry about the things you don’t have control over. That’s my attitude toward everything.

If you want to buy anabolic steroids, I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to on the open market. If they did, all those prices would come down. If you want to take that crap and destroy yourself, how is that my business? That’s on you. I’m not going to take that crap whether it’s legal or not, unless the doctor tells me it’s OK. I can go buy a gallon of tequila and drink myself to death and there’s nothing illegal about that. How is it that I cannot buy eye medicine without having a prescription? They legalized marijuana, but I have to have a prescription to buy antibiotics. Alcohol and marijuana are considered fine?

The world is not a perfect place; it’s only a series of compromises. I’m not going to make commercial-sounding music as far as what the public wants. The tradeoff is the general public isn’t going to like what I do. But with that comes a massive amount of freedom where I can still do what I want and make a living off of it, because I have those convictions.

What’s your take on major and independent labels and if they affect creative freedom?

I didn’t have that experience on a major label. They basically said, “You do whatever you want. We like what you’re doing.” And we turned in those records, covers done and then mastered. They didn’t even know where we recorded.

Had I gone to them and said I want to sell millions of records and want you to help, they would have been more than happy to help and still would have allowed us to do whatever we wanted.

I don’t think there is anyone to blame other than the bands themselves. It was their big shot to become super-successful.

They wanted to be millionaires and they wanted to have the label help them do that. I’m not opposed to success on that level at all. I’m just not going to pretend to be someone.

Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols), who is absolutely one of my heroes, said something when he was in Public Image: The second when labels start to dictate is the second we cease to function.

When the bands sit back and let their success happen, it’s by design. And then they complain about the music industry?

They were the ones to sign the contracts.

How about your experience with Atlantic Records?

We knew when we went on a major label it wasn’t going to work on the scale that they may have thought it was going to, but we knew we would be in a better place than when we started. It would be a weird journey that would maybe last one album, but we did three albums. I figured they would have dropped us after Houdini (1993, co-produced with Kurt Cobain).

That didn’t happen. Miracles never cease.

If that contract with Atlantic was laid in front of me today, I’d sign it again.

The labels are only there to make money. That’s the point. And this idea extends into indie labels as well. Just on a monetary level, an indie label that doesn’t pay a band is a much bigger rip-off than a major label that never pays a band, because you’re getting a huge advance with a major label. With an indie label, per dollar invested, is by far the biggest rip-off. They pay you shit and they won’t give you anything when the record sells.

They’ll just never pay you and then go out of business.

But there was no golden era when bands got money from their labels. I think guys like Bo Diddley never got a nickel, and that’s back when people bought records.

You’ve had interactions with Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell through the years and he praised your work. How has his death affected you?

It’s horrible. I’ve never claimed to be an expert in mental illness or anything along those lines. It’s a mystery to me why that happened. Plus, the toxicology report said he wasn’t really on anything of any level that would make this feasible. Who knows? There really wasn’t any reason to believe he was depressed or anything weird.

I don’t know what society could have done that he couldn’t have done for himself. He’s a rich man. If people like (Cor-

nell) or Robin Williams can’t make it, I don’t know what society can do. I’ve had people really close to me kill themselves in the last year. It’s not something you get over. Not easily.

The people I’ve known who said they were going to kill themselves don’t do it.

The people I have known who were going to kill themselves, didn’t say they were going to. The ones speaking in cryptic terms ... you have to worry about.

I also don’t want the state of my mental health to be in the hands of a government official. That’s for me and my family to deal with.

How is it living and working with an artist?

It’s very intense at our house. We’re both very headstrong people, but we give each other a lot of space. The key to any marriage is not living in each other’s pockets. I’m gone at least four or five months a year. She knew the job was dangerous when she took it. That hasn’t been a problem. We understand how it works between us. We’ve never had a regular nine-to-five job. There’s a lot of hustling going on.

You have a ceiling of toys. Were some of them featured in your video for “Electric Flower”?

No. Those belonged to its director, Mark Brooks of the Warlock Pinchers.

(The ceiling) was a lot of hard work. I was up for the challenge and just did it in about a year. I was a quarter of the way through and it dawned on me that I had to finish it. I like work like that. It required a lot of energy but doesn’t require a lot of straight lines.

And you both love dogs. Do you work with any rescues or nonprofits?

We’ve done a lot of dog rescue stuff, but neither of us think we can contribute enough time to something like that. We’ve done our part by harboring a lot of dogs for a long time.

We’re down to two right now, but we’ve had as many as five. Three have died, and two we’ve had to put down because they’d gotten so old. I’d rather have it that way than have them accidentally be killed. You can prepare to have them put down. Dogs do have dignity. When they can’t stand, walk and be able to go to the bathroom, there isn’t much you can do.

It’s horrible, but you see them through to the end. SNT

FRISCIA COMES ALIVE FOR PERSONAL CD TRIBUTE SHOW Singer-songwriter Dennis Friscia has nearly 40 years of songs under his belt, and he’ll share many of them with his longtime fans during a free show on Wednesday, July 26, 7 to 9 p.m., at The Ridge Tavern, 1281 Salt Springs Road, Chittenango.

Not only will Friscia’s songs be presented by area musicians, the show will also celebrate the CD release of Safe Under the Covers, a compilation of the troubadour’s originals performed by artists from around the country.

“I’ve got deep roots in Syracuse,” says the Seattle-based Friscia. “You don’t make friends like you do in Syracuse (anywhere else). I’ll always swear that the people I’ve met there are the best friends of my life. A lot of them are musicians or music fans. There is a bond.”

Several musicians who are on the CD are friends Friscia first bonded with decades earlier. Artists like Karen Savoca, Pete Heitzman and Gary Frenay all worked with Friscia when he lived in

Syracuse from 1977 to 1995. Although Friscia first started performing at age 13 in Brooklyn, it was in the Salt City’s coffeehouses that he really dug into the folk scene.

“I was the only singer-songwriter around,” he says. “Musically, it was mainly bands then. New Wave began to seep in around that time, especially blooming in the early 1980s, and many of them wrote their own songs in addition to any covers they may have done, such as the Todd Hobin Band, Pictures (with Bob Halligan) or 805.”

The ukulele-toting Friscia played original tunes at local coffeehouses with his band, the Oh-So-Sensitive Sidemen.

He also took up the stage name Bergman Broome because, according to Friscia, his real name had proven too difficult to spell for some people.

Savoca and Heitzman later began a weekly gig at the Orange Grove on Westcott Street (now Munjed’s Middle Eastern Café) and Friscia started mixing

with them and other local musicians who were writing their own songs and putting together original projects. Friscia got his own weekly gig where his group would serve as the house band and host various soloists. He also wrote all the material for the Sidemen.

In 1995 Friscia moved on to San Francisco, then settled in Seattle. He’s currently a full-time student in an interdisciplinary arts program at Goddard College.

The program, which focuses on creative outlets students choose to follow, helped spark an idea for a project.

“I thought to have people record my songs,” he says. “I didn’t know if anyone would. I began asking people I was associated with and they started saying yes.

So I thought, maybe other people would say yes. I thought they might think it’s weird, but everyone was very gracious.

I guess the average person doesn’t get asked to be on a tribute album, even if the tributee isn’t famous.”

Friscia gave the artists a collection of 31 songs to choose from, then they recorded the tracks at different studios, including Armory Square’s Subcat Studio. Friscia

told them, “The only rule is: There are no rules.”

“The response was very flattering,” he says about the 14-track album. Several artists hail from the across the country, yet others reside right in Central New York, including several who will perform at The Ridge, such as Moon Rabbit, Dusty Pas’cal and Jamie Notarthomas.

“I told them to interpret with complete freedom artistically,” he says. “The level of professionalism and talent is astounding.”

But successful interpretation starts with a solid base. “The songs are accessible, the lyrics are deep,” Friscia says.

“They’re good, well-constructed songs.

People bit into them.”

The night will end with Friscia’s own band, The Mansplainers, performing a short set of his songs.

“In November I first asked people to do it,” Friscia says, “and I thought it might just be one of my hare-brained creative schemes. But people accepted graciously.

It’s been fun and a listening experience.”

GREEN DAY’S PUNK RAGE FUELS DYNAMIC ROCK OPERA

C

entral New York Playhouse’s production of Green Day’s punk opera American Idiot, running through Aug. 5, breaks the mold. In a reconfiguration of the company’s tight space, set designer Christopher Lupia and director Liam Fitzpatrick now feature a 20-foot thrust runway so that more of the audience is closer to the action.

Overhead are 20 TV monitors flashing images that both enhance and counteract what’s being performed live. Above the action, the six-player thunderous musical ensemble, led by Abel Searor, is always visible. The most prominent player, bassist Rob Searle, sports a black T-shirt reading, “Make America Punk Again.”

All the innovations support director Fitzpatrick’s goal of breaking American Idiot away from its original time slot.

Green Day’s concept album appeared in September 2004 (the Tony Award-winning Broadway show premiered in 2010), when it was clear that the invasion-occupation of Iraq was by no means an accomplished mission but that George W. Bush would be re-elected anyway. One character, Tunny (Nicholas MacLane), dons a Marine uniform and is sent into battle, where he loses a leg. He’s attended

Those TV monitors bring us to the present. As the action begins we see NBC’s Chuck Todd interviewing Kellyanne Conway as she burbles the top quote of 2017: “We have alternative facts.” Loops and snippets continue throughout the 100-minute action, with ads for Chia Pets preceding the soothing but toxic bromides of Pat Robertson. Although there are occasional stills of what might be classed as video, nearly all of the rest, deftly collected by Isaac Betters, runs on the tube every day. Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer are telling us that the rage of the punk movement, far from being nihilistic, assails inauthenticity.

Action begins with nearly the entire company, dynamically choreographed

by Sami Hoerner, in the title number, “American Idiot.” They are overcome with suburban anomie in Jingletown, USA, reprising what earlier generations felt was bourgeois emptiness. The voice that quickly emerges is that of Johnny (Mike Gibson) in a trim blond mohawk.

He bills himself as “Jesus of Suburbia” in the second number.

Much of the success of American Idiot relies on the tender-angry persona that Mike Gibson as Johnny brings to the production, and his expressive powerhouse vocals. Well-known locally as the front man for the rock group The Action! for more than 18 years, Gibson has long been absent from the dramatic stage. But he hails from a distinguished lineage: His sister is Katie Gibson, a multi-winner with the Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) awards.

Doing much of the heavy lifting, Gibson solos or leads in many of the show’s most affecting numbers, including the rock blasts “Holiday” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” but also the plaintive “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”

Johnny is part of a trio, which includes Tunny, wounded in Iraq, who nonetheless has several important numbers, starting with the despairing “City of the Damned.”

Nicholas MacLane, as Tunny, is blessed with clean-cut, leading-man good looks, which may be why he’s so effective with the most downbeat of musical numbers, like “Before the Lobotomy.”

The third member is hapless Will (Tyler Ianuzi), whose girlfriend Heather (Natasia White) is pregnant without any plans for coping, as she tells us in “Dearly Beloved.” Johnny borrows money and bus tickets for escape, but Will, in a wordplay reversal of his name, collapses in on himself. For much of the action he remains on a shabby couch at stage left, immobilized by drugs, alcohol and jacking off, even as his voice rises to blend with the others.

Johnny’s love interest is a reversal of boy-meets-girl conventions. After dosing himself with drugs, he sees a beautiful woman whom he calls Whatsername (Hannah Weiler). They make love, and he sings “When It’s Time,” the most tender number in the show. Johnny’s descent into drugs, however, has surpassed the recreational use, and he turns on her with a knife. Her message of departure is in the poisonous number, “Letterbomb.”

American Idiot’s major scene-stealer is Josh Taylor, in a red and black fright wig, as the Satanic drug dealer St. Jimmy. Lyricist Billie Joe Armstrong took this role on Broadway, and SALT-winner Taylor, the most experienced member of the cast, gives what might be the best performance of his career: appalling and mesmerizing.

In Whatsername’s departure, she sings that St. Jimmy is a figment of Johnny’s father’s rage and mother’s love.

Breaking the mold means American Idiot is unlike any community theater production seen before. SNT

FROSTBIT BLUE CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF SOUTHERN ROCK AT HARBORFEST Forty years ago, teenage guitarist Tommy McCaffrey cranked out chords in the band Mind’s Eye. On the strength of its ambitious set list and its youthful fervor, the Oswego rock rookies won a talent show at the New York State Fair in the mid-1970s. Unlike most rock bands at the time, which covered The Beatles and The Eagles, Mind’s Eye covered Kansas.

Mind’s Eye (not to be confused with Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman’s 1980s jam band of the same name) morphed into the Barry James Band, named after Tom’s older brother, Barry McCaffrey, who later died in a tragic auto wreck. Tom played lead on plenty of Barry’s originals, including the mesmerizing rock tone poem, “Lake Ontario Twilight.”

A few years later and 120 miles southerly, a young Binghamton musician named Nick Gravelding was playing in his brother’s band, the cleverly named Rusty Still. After he enrolled at SUNY Oswego in 1987, Gravelding formed Frostbit Blue on campus with guitarist Erik Viel and drummer Matt Albano. In those days, Gravelding played bass, but he was already developing into a potent vocalist as the fledgling Frostbit Blue covered blues

by B.B. King and Cream and dabbled in rhythm’n’blues.

“I used to play in Frostbit Blue and Rusty Still at the same time until my childhood best friend and Rusty Still drummer, Jamie Lane, died,” he remembered. But before Lane’s untimely passing, Viel and Albano graduated from Oswego and split the scene. Sometime around 1991, Gravelding strapped on a guitar and hired Oswego townie Tom McCaffrey to pluck the bass for Frostbit.

Before long, Tim “Weasel” Smith, another Barry James Band vet, took over on the four-string, and McCaffrey switched back to guitar. With Gravelding and McCaffrey at the top of their games, they forged Frostbit Blue’s dynamic dual-guitar attack, righteously reminiscent of the Allman Brothers Band. When they plug in, Gravelding and McCaffrey are like thunder and lightning.

The quintet opened with a memorable Barry James Band instrumental, “West Seneca Street Theme,” which celebrates a well-traveled west side thoroughfare notable for its lack of stop signs. With McCaffrey picking a Strat and Gravelding wielding a Les Paul, the dynamic shared guitar parts inevitably gave way to Mike Place’s tasty pianistics.

Place, a Fulton native who also performed with the Walking Wounded and Off the Reservation, added touches of Steely Dan and The Beatles to Frostbit Blue. “We were kind of able to mesh

those two styles (when Place joined the band),” Gravelding observed. “We had a lot of Southern influence but we had some cool changes and some cool harmonies.

Mike’s arranging skills are really, really good. It was a cool mixture. We weren’t completely a Southern band. We had a lot of different flavors in there.”

After negotiating “West Seneca Street,” Gravelding turned up the heat with his gritty, growling vocal on “You’ll Be Cryin,’” from the band’s 1997 CD, Just What the Doctor Ordered. After harmony choruses by Place and McCaffrey, Gravelding tossed the lead singing to Place, who ably drove it home.

Along the way, drummer John “Valcher” Bletch and bassist Benny Fiacco fueled the band’s fire with crisp rhythmic embellishments. Bletch, a veteran of the Barry James Band who also now hits the skins for the Tom Barnes Band and Vitamin X, keeps precise time while propelling Frostbit forward with his slick stick work.

Bassist Fiacco, who owns a Southern Tier shop called Music City, adds a distinctive rumble to the Frostbit sound while remaining ever true to the melodies.

Gravelding introduced the next song as a new one for the band, but “Blue Sky” is an oldie for Allman Brothers fans who first heard the Dickey Betts tune on the Eat a Peach album in 1972. For “Blue Sky,” McCaffrey switched to a Les Paul so that he and Gravelding mirrored the Allmans’ twin Gibson-guitar attack while Place rose from the keyboard to strum an acoustic six-string.

The ascending guitar parts reached to the “Sky,” as did Duane and Dickey, but otherwise Frostbit Blue makes the song very much their own, especially with their inventive vocal treatment juxtaposing Gravelding’s grit and falsetto against McCaffrey and Place’s close harmonies on the chorus.

As serious students of Southern rock, Frostbit Blue naturally uses its second guitar to form patterns behind the solo rather than just comping, just as Duane Allman advised. Like Duane and Dickey, Gravelding and McCaffrey perform intricate, interlocking patterns with each other and with the bassist, the music reverberating from their open-back Fender amps.

The effect on audiences is absolutely thrilling.

Toward the end of the July 14 concert, the Port City rockers again recalled the Allmans while remodulating “Jessica,” the 1973 instrumental that became an FM radio staple.

Other highlights of their two-hour set were Place’s plaintive vocals on “Stop Foolin’ Around with My Heart” and Gravelding’s rendition of Marshall Tucker’s 1975 hit, “This Ol’ Cowboy.” On both numbers, Mike Place killed on his twin keyboards. On “Cowboy,” his adventurous, jazzy, piano lines well-complemented McCaffrey’s prettily picked guitar leads.

Between songs, Gravelding made a point to pay tribute to “The Wease,” the late Frostbit Blue bassist Tim “Weasel” Smith, who died in 2001 after a bout with cancer.

Like the Allman and Tucker bands, Frostbit Blue has endured the untimely deaths of several musicians and colleagues. Drummer Jamie Lane was killed

in a car accident in 1995 at age 29. And keyboardist Bill Feeney, who played with Mind’s Eye and the Barry James Band, died of rheumatoid arthritis in 2011 at age 57.

For the decade-and-a-half before his passing, Weasel brought a certain verisimilitude to Frostbit Blue. An easy-going longhaired hippie in the Furry Freak Brothers mold, Smith’s bass plucking formed a solid backbone for the group’s sound.

Brotherhood, both figurative and literal, rules the world of Frostbit Blue, but so does fatherhood. Nick Gravelding still works with his Rusty Still brother, Scott, in the Gravelding Brothers Band. Scott and Nick are the sons of songwriter Austin “Rick” Gravelding, an acoustic guitarist in the John Denver mold who released two albums in the early 1970s, co-composed a few tunes with Ronnie James Dio and had one of his songs placed on a 1982 Melissa Manchester album.

Unlike his dad’s records, Nick Gravelding’s Frostbit Blue discs sold like crazy.

Ice Breaker dropped in 1995, and two years later the band followed up with the more slickly produced CD Just What the Doctor Ordered, named for Corrliss Varnum, a well-fixed physician-fan who financially supported both recordings, which were co-produced by the band and engineer Greg Gefell.

More than 16,000 Frostbit fans bought the two discs, which are now out of print.

Thousands of those fans will fill Breitbeck Park, 41 Lake St., on the shore of Lake Ontario, on Saturday, July 29, 10 p.m., to witness the Frostbit phenomenon following the famous Oswego Harborfest fireworks display. Over the years, Frostbit Blue has shared the stage with heroes such as Charlie Daniels, ZZ Top, .38 Special, Dickey Betts, Gov’t Mule and Steppenwolf. Each of the half-dozen times Frostbit Blue opened for Marshall Tucker, Doug Gray invited Gravelding to trade vocals with him on “Can’t You See.” The band reached a zenith of sorts with an opening-day set on one of two main stages at Woodstock 1999 in Rome.

But headlining Harborfest is something special. The post-fireworks show is a coveted time slot, essentially the weekend’s main-stage apogee, and it’ll feature Frostbit Blue, the pride of the Port City.

Joe Unangst, a longtime Frostbit fan from Syracuse, believes longevity pays dividends for the combo. “The key to the band is that four of the five members have

played together for 30 years, and they are extremely tight,” Unangst said. “On their version of ‘Whipping Post,’ they do that lean-all-together toward the end, and that’s neat. But they’re so tight with the guitars and keyboards that it’s freakish.”

As the group’s second disc was released, Frostbit Blue won a Syracuse Area Music Award (Sammy) for best rock group in 1997, and two years later the Sammys honored Nick Gravelding as Best Rock Instrumentalist, according to the Sammys website (although Nick insists he won the trophy for Best Rock Vocalist).

In any case, the plaudits continue to pile up this year during the band’s 30th anniversary. The Oswego Music Hall of Fame will induct Frostbit Blue on Oct. 15, 1 p.m., at the American Foundry in Oswego. The quintet will join previous inductees including Elmer Hadlow’s barbershop quartet, the Rock’n Hi Lows, Nick Sterio’s big band; jazzman Edward Goodness, rock’n’roller Sam Domicolo and educator Edward Lisk.

Nick Gravelding fully embraces the band’s Southern rock roots, but he knows there’s more to it than recycled riffs.

Their audiences respond enthusiastically to the band’s originals: signature songs with attention-grabbing stop times such as “Child of December” and “Sweet Mary Jane,” and, of course, “Lake Ontario Twilight.”

“We love their songs even more than the covers they do,” said Joe Unangst. In fact, Joe and his wife, Mary, consider “Lake Ontario Twilight” their song: “You know, like our romantic song that we relate to.”

Ever since he was a kid, Nick loved Southern rock. “I don’t know exactly how that happens growing up in the Binghamton area, but very much the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, The Outlaws was the stuff I was good at,” he said. “We eventually ended up with two guitars, so it was just one of those things where my influences kind of influenced the style of the band.”

Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts often complains about being “pigeonholed” as Southern rock. “It’s limiting,” he once told a reporter. “I’d rather just be known as a progressive rock band from the South.”

And while Frostbit Blue will always be categorized as a Southern rock band from the North, the quintet’s compositional creativity and passionate performances could certainly peg them as progressive as well. Call it what you will: It’s the music that matters. SNT

NOT THE SAME OLD JAZZ PROMISED AT CLINTON SQUARE FEST

Fifteen years ago Larry Luttinger of CNY Jazz Central and the city of Syracuse were determined to continue having a jazz presence in the heart of downtown. Jazz in the Square was born.

A handful of years later its name and concept would be re-envisioned as the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival.

The free two-day music festival in Clinton Square, which takes place Friday, July 28, and Saturday, July 29, continues to add to the pleasures of Syracuse Arts Week. It will be joined by the Stage of Nations Blue Rain EcoFest in Hanover Square, the Arts & Crafts Festival in Columbus Circle and the Street Painting Festival in front of City Hall.

“It has legs,” Luttinger said. “There is a community need. We’re here to fill it.”

Luttinger said that putting a festival together in Syracuse isn’t an easy task. “It takes its toll over the years,” he admitted, “but there is still fire in the belly.”

After this weekend’s fest, he’ll soon be preparing for the July 2018 edition. He doesn’t receive money from the city and less than $10,000 from Onondaga County, so sponsorships are critical.

“It’s difficult to find the budget,” Luttinger said. “It isn’t the old days. The economy changed drastically as we all remember in 2008. The banking industry is different than it used to be. Syracuse continues to lose corporate ownership. There aren’t as many community stakeholders.”

“We applied for the third year, but did not receive, a $25,000 grant to market our festival and ArtsWeek,” added Luttinger. “It’s a great concept. The offerings are very diverse. Not many cities can offer festivals of multiple festivals. Syracuse is very unique and deserves more recognition. I wish there was some pot of gold we could access to really market like it should be marketed. It’s a potent cultural tourism vehicle.”

In 2013, a research firm helped calculate the attendance of Arts Week. Luttinger said about 37,000 “raw bodies” come to downtown Syracuse over a three- to four-day period. Should they visit, which is a very good chance they will, the attendance totals to about 60,000 festival attendees every year.

Aside from this weekend’s big festival, Luttinger and his team continue their regularly scheduled programming, including the summer jazz workshop and residency at the New York State Fairgrounds. It also includes the five-week-long Jazz in the City, which kicks off Thursday, Aug. 3, at Dunk & Bright, 2648 S. Salina St. This year showcases the most music and jazz-related programming they’ve ever done.

CNY Jazz Central also offers 11 music programs marketed directly to schools across the state. “We’re glad to be doing our part,” he said, “and whenever possible to find opportunities for students, who have gone through our and other community programs, to benefit from exposure at our events.

“One shining example is the Stan Colella City of Syracuse Parks & Recreation All-Star Band, which is run by the city and taught by us,” Luttinger continued. “They use Jazz Central as a rehearsal hall, we allow access to our library and provide them with instruments and music. They always are given a spot and given a clinic and perform with a national artist. This year that will be Joe Magnarelli.”

Syracuse native and trumpeter Magnarelli has gained international fame after moving from home in the 1980s to start his career in New York City. He’s performed and recorded alongside several groups and musicians, including Toshiko Akiyoshi, Harry Connick Jr. and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

“I’ve been wanting to bring him back ever since he recorded an album with the string orchestra,” Luttinger said. “I saw the opportunity this year, approached Symphoria and they said they’re in. We’re going to be able to provide symphonic jazz in Clinton Square.”

Luttinger admitted that the music programming has changed through the years. Syracuse’s festival history grows longer each year, and it’s inevitable to make changes to showcase fresh talent and keep the momentum going.

“We’ve become an eclectic festival with what I like to call a sampler approach to the arts,” he said. “We make sure to provide every kind of improvised American and multi-ethnic music that can be called jazz. Jazz is an all-encompassing term. It’s really the world’s music at this point, and it’s made in America.”

Performers include the Motown appeal of Trumptight315, reggae and groove rockers Root Shock, avant-garde and eclectic jazz from Bob Holz & A Vision Forward with Chet Catallo and Ralphe Armstrong, plus Sam Kininger with Brownskin among several others.

There are other factors that help with tweaking the lineup and appeal. Luttinger called the 13202 zip code the fastest-growing neighborhood, and it’s a young population. “It’s programming with purpose. Cities have to have a rep as hip and fun, or people don’t move here or they don’t stay here,” he said. “We program for surroundings, to educate and to build new audiences so this art form does not age out and pass away.”

As a baby boomer, Luttinger gives credit to Blood, Sweat &

Tears and Chicago as his gateway bands.

“I couldn’t believe that music when I first heard it. I remember saving my paper route money, going to a department store and buying as many 99-cent jazz albums with a trumpet player or saxophonist on the cover as I could,” he recalled. “I still have those albums. I didn’t know what jazz was, but I heard it in a rock situation.”

This is why Dynamo, a young and energetic horn group from Nashville, is one of the featured artists at the fest. The band’s drummer Nate Felty is a West Genesee High School graduate, tying the headliner to the area.

“We’re spending more and more time searching for groups that will appeal to Gen X and Gen Y and millennial audiences. Every generation needs gateway music,” Luttinger said. “I hope they take away a great recreational and artistic experience.

I hope we spark curiosity in adults and aspiring young student musicians.” SNT

SALT CITY SHOWCASE DURING ARTS AND CRAFTS FEST

Downtown Syracuse’s Columbus Circle will soon transform into one of New York state’s most prestigious art shows: the AmeriCU Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival.

The event runs Friday, July 28, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The three-day fest, which is celebrating its 47th year, serves as the centerpiece for the annual Arts Week event.

What makes the Arts and Crafts Fest such an esteemed show is the competitive entry process for artists wanting to showcase their work.

Alice Maggiore, communications coordinator for the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, said more than 350 artists and designers submitted their work to a jury for consideration this year, while only around 165 to 170 will be awarded a spot in the show.

“The way the jury works is they are not able to see where the artists are from,” Maggiore said. “It’s strictly judging on their work or images. I don’t even think they have access to their names to clear any potential bias.”

Central New York designers aren’t the only ones who are allowed to enter. Artists from more than 25 states will be on hand, and the countries of Israel and Canada also will be represented.

A featured artistic theme will be the use of unusual ma-

terials and media. Kathleen Scranton from Connecticut will showcase her collection of purses made from used books, while Chuck and Kim Peashey from Brockport have fused musical instruments with vintage lamps to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

Other traditional artistic forms will include ceramics, glass, jewelry, wood, drawing and sculptures.

The festival isn’t limited to selling and displaying works of art, however. Returning for a second year will be the Downtown Committee’s “Forecasting the Future: Activating Downtown’s Alleyways,” a free interactive workshop for all ages. Participants decorate lanterns that depict how they view the future of Syracuse. The lanterns are modeled after the weather star that sits atop the nearby AXA Tower, hence the name “Forecasting the Future.”

“We got a lot of positive feedback on (last year’s lantern workshop),” Maggiore said. “It attracted families, children and artists in the area. And it’s nice to be able to continue to collect those lanterns.”

The lanterns will be displayed in unused downtown window spaces later this summer. Those who participate can use the hashtag #stARTcuse on social media to share photos of their visionary artwork.

For entertainment, strolling street performers will

wander around the event, as well as music from local and national acts. Food stands will also be available from local merchants.

Maggiore said the reason that people flock to the Arts and Crafts Fest every year is that it has something for everyone. “I know I shop there to get some Christmas gifts out of the way,” she said. “Other people like to come and see the unique things that maybe they won’t see at other craft fairs out in the area. It’s like a one-stop shopping place.”

The artists are also taken care of by the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. A private barbecue is held Saturday night for vendors to unwind. And if they need to go anywhere during the festival, even a bathroom break, committee members will staff their booth in their absence.

STAGE OF NATIONS FEST CONTINUES TO BLOSSOM

R

egarding last year’s Stage of Nations Blue Rain EcoFest, co-organizer Irv Lyons Jr. said, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” He didn’t have to reiterate himself this year, because the schedule is as packed as it was last year. The 2017 edition also adds an extra evening, running Thursday, July 27, through Saturday, July 29, in Hanover Square.

“I had hoped we could keep continuing since the beginning,” Lyons said. “It depends on the community’s involvement. It’s sponsorships. We don’t make any money off of this. (Making money) was never our intent. Our intent is to show our culture.”

The Blue Rain EcoFest is one of four main festivals celebrated during Arts Week in downtown Syracuse. For its eighth year, the family-friendly Haudenosaunee cultural event will feature an eclectic lineup of music, smoke dancing competition and other activities in the square.

A free presentation of the film Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation will kick off the fest on Thursday, July 27, 8 p.m. Patrons should bring lawn chairs to enjoy the documentary about the Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team. The rain location will be the City Hall Commons’ atrium across the street.

Spirit Game, directed by Peter Baxter and Peter Spirer, has garnered plenty of local and national interest, plus it has received favorable reviews on film websites such as IMDB and

Rotten Tomatoes. “Everything in life is connected,” said Irv Lyons in a separate interview. “This movie is a great preface for the festival.” “(The film) is a platform for the Haudenosaunee,” said co-organizer Rex Lyons, who noted that it’s a vehicle not only for lacrosse, but for culture and politics as well. “It allows us to have a dialogue, to share our differences.”

In a separate interview, Irv Lyons was asked about the difficulty of having a dialogue. “There isn’t enough time. It’s hard to build relationships when we don’t have enough time. And in order to really get to know someone, you have to spend time with them. Now we get to look forward to spending three days with the community.”

The popular smoke dance contest should be a festival highlight. Notable dancer Chris Thomas, who has been a part of previous Stage of Nations festivals, is excited to help out other dancers for this year’s event.

“This is a great competition,” he said. “I’d like to see it grow.

It will attract other dancers in other nations throughout the state and in Canada to come participate.”

“It’s great that we have festivals like this in the city,” added Thomas. It’s not only great to recognize the Haudenosaunee, but doing so also helps eliminate misconceptions toward Native American culture.

Irv Lyons also stresses that this festival goes beyond the Six Nations that compose the confederacy. It incorporates the rest of the community, regardless of ethnicity or background.

The event’s sponsor is Circare, a nonprofit that specializes in chronic health and substance abuse cases along with several mental and behavioral health-related services. In 1989, the organization was originally founded as Onondaga Case Management Services. Along with company growth and increased service, it was rebranded and renamed last year.

Not only does the organization focus on services, it also offers educational and outreach components.

“The beginning, wishing everyone well,” said Circare executive director Scott Ebner, “that is our mission to serve our communities.”

Scott Lyons will echo those words of thanksgiving when the festivities officially kick off on Friday, July 21, 5 p.m. When there is a ceremonial or social event, Lyons said, the thanksgiving presented is not only to wish everyone well, but also to remind people of their connection to each other and to earth. As living beings we should be appreciative of what we have and where we have come from. SNT

PAVEMENT ART STEPS INTO DOWNTOWN DURING STREET PAINTING

The sidewalks of Montgomery Street in downtown Syracuse will once again be coated with eye-popping chalk paintings during the 27th annual Street Painting Festival, presented by the Syracuse New Times. The event runs Saturday, July 29, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The rain date will be Saturday, Aug. 5, if needed.

The event has become a staple for Arts Week in Syracuse, which celebrates the local and national culture of the arts with various festivals, performances and gatherings in areas such as Hanover Square, Columbus Circle and Clinton Square.

The festival will again cater to artists of all age groups. The categories consist of adults, teens and youth (12 and under), and there are no restrictions on participation; artists of all skill levels are welcome.

Teens and youths both pay $10 for preregistering, and adults pay $20. The price is upped by $5 on the day of the event.

If creating vibrant artwork for the citizens to marvel at isn’t enough incentive to participate, prizes will be given out to the first- and second-place winners for each age group. Adults receive $150 and $75; teens come home with $75 and $50; and youths win $50 and $25.

An honorable mention for each group and people’s choice will also win gift cards and other prizes to area businesses.

All participants are automatically entered to win other various gift certificates,

which will be awarded throughout the day’s proceedings.

Entertainment for the day includes Coco the Clown and her face-painting gang, food and drinks. Local artist and designer Tommy Lincoln will also be on hand to put his professional stamp on the event. Last year Lincoln sketched out a cartoon of a scientist using his distinctive drawing style on one of the blocks. Some of his other artistic endeavors can be seen throughout Central New York, including logo designs for Modern Malt and Beak and Skiff’s 1911 hard cider. “(Street Painting) gives a chance for a lot of people to explore downtown with their kids. It gets a lot of the youth involved,” Lincoln said. “It adds pops of color to the city. Everybody is smiling and having a good time, and that’s what it should be like.”

Coming prepared to Street Painting is always a good idea. A spray bottle of water can serve as an eraser, and kneepads or a kneeling mat can help artists stay comfortable. And a sπpritz of hairspray can extend the lifespan of your work of art, especially of you want to revisit your chalk masterpiece a few days later, Whether you’re pulling up a lawn chair for the entire day or just passing through on your way to another Arts Week event, the Syracuse New Times Street Painting Festival is always worth a look-see.
