Angela Gunn pursues an SU degree for a better future – and for her children When Angela Gunn’s job was eliminated a few years ago, she didn’t despair. The mother of four had two associate degrees, but dreamed of a bachelor’s degree. “I saw this as an opportunity to continue my education so I could get a job I really enjoyed rather than just earning a paycheck,” she recalls. “This seemed like a good time to get equipped for a career. But I had a stronger motivation too,” she adds. “I wanted to be an example to my children.” Angela weighed her options and enrolled at Syracuse University through the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at University College – the only part-time HEOP in New York State. HEOP helps economically and educationally disadvantaged but highly motivated students to earn a college degree. “I have been given the most awesome opportunity,” Angela says. “I can’t be more thankful and don’t take this for granted.” Angela established firm rules for herself. “I put my family first,” she says, “and then I do all I can to succeed in my classes.” She believes adults have an advantage over younger students because they are more patient and responsible. “We take school seriously, especially when given this privilege of furthering our education,” she explains. A bachelor’s degree will provide more options for the future, Angela believes. The political science major hopes to get an advocate job in government. “Someday, I would like to go to graduate school to pursue a career in law,” she says. “That’s my dream job.” Learn more about HEOP and part-time study at SU: parttime.syr.edu

Can you capture this poketyrant before it fills a toxic concert venue with torch-wielding zombies chanting “Make America Great Again?” Probably not, but it’s fun to try!

POCKET MONSTERS FOR THE DONALD’S WORLD Big news, Pokemon Go fans! I’m getting word via Russian intelligence agencies via shady intermediaries via Wikileaks that major changes are in store for the popular augmented reality game if Donald Trump is elected president. The most obvious change will be the name. The game will be called Poketyrant Go to better reflect the ideals of Trump and those who have influenced his leadership style. Here’s a preview of the poketyrants we will search for locally starting in January 2017 if current polling trends continue:

3. StaLyncourt

1. MOSTolini

4. Toll Pot

The hamlet of Lyncourt is home to this poketyrant, whose dark magic includes the ability to purge millions of players from the game without due process. His hangouts include ideological dead ends and cult-de-sacs of personality. StaLyncourt can be briefly disarmed by high-velocity flattery rays. Tell him that he is one of the tallest dictators that you’ve ever met, the same way that you’d tell Trump that his hands are quite large and that you are 74 percent certain he does not have a micro-penis.

Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was the Science Guy of 20th-century Fascists, at least until he and his mistress were executed and hanged upside down at a service station. He believed science proved that God did not exist and that Darwinism justified brutality. This Mussolini-inspired poketyrant pays tribute to that spirit of discovery by scuttling about our landmark science museum. But be careful in your search. One of MOSTolini’s favorite tricks is to lure players into the Earth Science Discovery Cave and bombard them with Climate Change Denial Dust.

Known to haunt the New York State Thruway, Toll Pot will rob you of your precious PokeCoin as soon as it enters your account.

2. Adolphin

6. DinoMau Trump-A-Que

This finned poktyrant is neither fish nor mammal. It’s a maniscot, a hybrid between an Austrian-born lunatic and one of the most lovable team mascots in upstate New York: the Le Moyne College dolphin. Despite its whimsical appearance, Adolphin is so dangerous it cannot be captured by a single player and even then only if Adolphin’s bitter rival, StaLyncourt, is deployed. Approach cautiously from the west and east.

5. Saddome Ranger The Donald’s favorite terrorist killer, former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein, inspires this masked poketyrant. Attractive as Saddam might look in retrospect, especially wearing orange, be smart and wear a pokegasmask as you head out to search for this beloved mass murderer. Mau Zedong killed millions. Donald Trump’s Zedong is no doubt much smaller but still a force to be reckoned with. Thus was hatched DinoMau Trump-A-Que, a Yankee barbeque-themed virtual monster boasting the DNA of both leaders. Some credit to the game master, please. The current Pokemon Go game does not have a biracial sociopath that spews Wango Tango Sauce out of a dual ZeDong. This new version corrects that.

Pokemap design by Natalie Davis

9. Turning Trump Donald loves casinos, especially when he leaves his investors (“losers”) holding the bag. To capture Turning Trump, you’ll first have to make the short trip to Verona. (Watch out for Toll Pot!) If you see a huge shirtless dancing guy claiming to play for the New England Patriots, just ignore him. It’s a hologram generated by Turning Trump to throw you off the trail.

10. Ley Creek Trash Drumpf The Trump Administration gives a sly acknowledgement to his real family name with this adorable poketyrant inspired by Oscar the Grouch. Trash Drumpf happily accepts asbestos and radioactive materials.

11. Trumporary Hillbully When this poketyrant gets his Irish up, innocent gamers get deported.

12. Pense-ive Mike It might sound unfair that there’s one poketyrant who locks up the phones of gay players only. But that’s what makes Pense-ive Mike extra creepy — and the only probably gay poketyrant in the collection.

13. Poo-tin Trump salutes his new bestie, the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, with this ruthless poketryant who cavorts among the floating semi-solids at the sewage treatment plant on Hiawatha Boulevard. SNT syracusenewtimes.com | 7.27.16 - 8.2.16

MUSIC

BEE BUZZES SU WITH AMERICAN OPERA

S

ince high school, John Bee, aka American Opera, has been a touring musician. He toured for eight years with his high school band, then five years solo. When he visits the Syracuse University area’s Funk N Waffles on Thursday, July 28, he’ll bring a drummer and bassist with him, marking just his eighth show with the trio. “As a solo act, I went all over the United States and Canada,” he said. “In the beginning, it was really sad. I drove the same roads in the same van, playing the same venues as my old band, but by myself. It took some getting used to, but then I enjoyed it. But I always missed the company and energy of a band on stage. You can do more with it. Now I’m really excited to share the new album with the world.” That new album, Small Victories, is the first since 2013’s Your Songs. It is Bee’s first full-length solo album after three EPs, and features string and horn arrangements and guest vocals. “It’s what I’m most proud of in my short career,” he said. Bee’s been at it for more than a decade, including landing a spot on the Vans Warped Tour, even though he’s primarily an acoustic act. He recalled being just 16 and watching Thursday’s front man Geoff Rickly at a tour

stop. “He screamed to the crowd, ‘How many people are gonna play Warped Tour one day?’ and everyone was like, ‘Yeah!’” Bee remembers. “I raised my hand, too.” Twelve years later, Bee snagged a gig on the Acoustic Basement stage of the Warped Tour thanks to his old friend Brian Marquis. They met years earlier on the road and when both of their bands broke up, they each turned to solo acoustic music. When Bee learned that Marquis was running the stage, he begged for a start. “I drove 13 hours overnight from Chicago to Cleveland and played one show,” Bee says. “I got there at four in the morning, slept in the van and someone knocked on my window and said, ‘You gotta move! We have 50 buses coming in!’ That was my first look at how they really do the tour.” When the following summer came around, Bee hoped he’d get the whole tour. Marquis gave him one week.

The tour’s next year was another story, however. “I thought, ‘This is my year,’” Bee recalled. “No call. I got nothing. Then I did a new album and I was sitting on the couch listening to mixes when I got an email from Marquis saying, ‘Hey man, what are you doing this summer?’ I said, ‘You tell me, boss.’ After 12 years of wanting to do the tour, I got the call. It was the best feeling.” Bee has reached new audiences around the country with the tour and even sat in on Riff Raff’s set. “It was the most ridiculous thing,” Bee says. “I performed with Riff Raff on the last day of the tour. I did an acoustic bit to his songs while they were throwing Twinkies and Doritos. It was nuts.” Today, Bee is still taking opportunities as they come, and he’s back in his old band’s van after a few years of riding solo in his blue Buick (“Bluick”). “There’s more energy, more noise on stage,” he said. “We’ve got threepart vocal harmonies and a mix of classically trained musicians with my punk rock background. It’s a cool dynamic: We can go up and really rock hard or go down and lay a soft number. I’m really excited to be on the road with a completely different animal.”

John Bee, aka American Opera

Bee is also excited to keep pursuing his musical dream. “When you go on tour, there are good days and bad,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I would take the worst show ever, doing what I love on the road, over being home wishing I was on tour. It’s the little glimmers of hope that keep you going. It’s someone saying, ‘I love your album,’ or, ‘You did great tonight,’ or, ‘That song means a lot to me.’ Those things remind you why you

picked up the guitar when you were 12. I don’t know if I’m too dumb to quit or too stubborn, but this just makes me happier than anything else.” John Bee as American Opera takes the stage Thursday, July 28, 7 p.m., at Funk N Waffles University, 727 Crouse Ave. Also on the bill: Justin Jarmacz and Wyrd N A Whale. A

s a high school student in Skaneateles, DeAnna Wasiewski Germano thought she might pursue a legal career. Then she got a job in a restaurant kitchen, where co-workers noted her potential and encouraged her to enroll at a culinary school.

So she went to Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks, earning a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts and service management, and an associate’s degree in business administration in 2012. Her list of restaurant credits includes fine dining restaurants and event venues: Lake Placid Lodge, Mirbeau Inn and Spa and the former Kabuki restaurant in Skaneateles, Verona’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino, and Sky Armory in downtown Syracuse. When her father died several years ago, that set Germano to thinking about her dreams and goals. Whether it’s creating special occasion cakes or making healthy meals from locally grown produce, Germano’s passion is food — and sharing it with others. She decided to launch Chef4Rent, a catering service with a range of offerings. “Basically, I’m a chef and I rent out my services,’’ Germano said. “I got tired of doing

later use. Prices begin at about $75 (three meals a week for one person, with enough for leftovers), but vary depending on ingredients used and distance traveled. Germano is also excited about the Summer Cooking Camp classes she has been leading for the Skaneateles YMCA. For five weeks she instructs youngsters in the art, science and craft of food and cooking, including baking cakes, planning “restaurant meals” for children to prepare and serve to their parents, homemade snacks and treats, and homemade pasta. Youngsters take home what they make (including recipes) and learn the importance of listening, counting, measuring, taking direction and having fun in the kitchen. Germano occasionally collaborates with her husband, Mark Germano, who works as a chef at the Lincklaen House in Cazenovia, and has a special interest in pasta. She has also signed on to make cakes, cookies and other baked goods for Sweet and Smoke, a new cigar and pastry shop on Walton Street in Armory Square. It’s a full plate, to be sure, yet Germano is pleased with the progress of Chef4Rent and looks forward to growing her business. “In the last few months, things just sort of took off,’’ she said. “Things are falling into place.’’ For information on Chef4Rent, call 760-2023; email deanna.wasiewski@ gmail.com; or visit facebook.com/cheffourrent. normal chef work and working at night and work at restaurants. With this, I do a plethora of things. It makes my life interesting and I meet great people.’’ Germano, 25, launched her business about two years ago and said in the last six months, it has started to pick up steam. Chef4Rent offers everything from party platters to plated meals at home (think romantic dinners for two to dinner parties for larger gatherings), to custom-made cakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other occasions, to catering for all kinds of events. Germano works out of her own kitchen in Jordan and her clients’ kitchens, depending on the nature of the work, and she also has access to a commercial kitchen. Her services include weekly meal preparation and delivery for several clients. Germano creates meals to meet her clients’ personal tastes, nutritional goals and any dietary restrictions. She works with several community-supported agriculture venues (CSAs), including Main Street Farms in Homer and Greyrock Farm in Cazenovia, to help people eat healthy and with the seasons. The weekly delivery service is designed for those who don’t have the time, energy or desire to cook, but want the benefits and pleasure of a home-cooked meal. It’s Germano’s spin on store-bought meals and popular cooking and recipe services (like Blue Apron) that deliver pre-portioned meal ingredients and recipes to your doorstep. The difference is that many of the ingredients come from local farms and producers and little work is required. Meals come with instructions for finishing, heating, serving and/or freezing for

driving and stopping. We have our favorite swimming holes, and we’ll hop out and enjoy it. It’s a funny lifestyle, but pretty great and really fun. It’s full of laughing. What it was like to be a Vermonter while Bernie Sanders was running for president? We were all blown away when Bernie announced he was running. It was such an incredible thing he did. It’s such an incredible time to be from Vermont. Especially here (Burlington), the city was really charged. Why did you pick “This Land is Your Land” as you contribution to the campaign?

Kat Wright visits this weekend’s Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival By Jessica Novak

T

he Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival will return to Clinton Square on Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30. The fest will feature three stages filled with national and local acts, including Prime Time Funk, Soulplay, Atlas and the Burlington-based Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band. The eight-piece group is known for their big sound and retro feel led by the powerful pipes of Wright. The band’s 6 p.m. set on Friday should be a solid opener to the event. For more details, visit nejazzwinefest.org. On the horizon is a new album, By My Side, recorded in New York City and produced by Joel Hamilton, whose clients span Norah Jones to Aaron Neville. The band has also signed on with Madison House Booking Agency, a major move, and appeared with Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign several times. Wright chatted with the Syracuse New Times about her band’s upcoming plans. Tell me about By My Side and your decision to work with Joel Hamilton. We raised $30,000 on Kickstarter to make it. Our drummer, Ezra Oklan, had worked with Joel before. He’s good at capturing a classic sound with horns and vocals, but with a really modern, new-school rhythm’n’blues, drum-and-bass sound. He’s a total wizard, and it was really a cool experience. I’ve never had the privilege or money to work with a producer before. I just can’t believe there are people out there who can listen to your music and know how to make it better — and be right. He could edit in this efficient, intuitive, really cool and inventive way. It totally blew my mind. I talk about it like it’s a miracle, because that’s what it felt like. I’m kind of addicted to it now.

10

7.27.16 - 8.2.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Tell me about the songs. Half of the album are songs we’ve been performing for a while, and the other half are brand new. Some of the stuff we’d been working on and the new stuff we didn’t have attachments to. We could change arrangements and all. It’s a good mix. I’m excited to have it out. It’s funny when there are a couple years between releases. When you hear the old one you’re like, ‘That’s not me anymore!’ I’m excited to have something that represents what we are now. What’s it like touring with an eight-piece band? We have a big, blue, 12-seat passenger van we call The Pig. I’m not sure why. (Laughs.) It’s like a traveling circus. We’re a crew, and it’s always a production. At stops it’s like, ‘Don’t let so-and-so out of your sight!’ Then they’ll go get an ice cream cone and start talking to a girl, and 20 minutes later we’re still trying to go. And we mix the travel with equal parts

When I was asked to participate I was told to find or write a song that meant a lot to me. They told me to do what was in my heart, and I should do the most meaningful thing I could to help the campaign. I chose that song and there were all these cool Burlington connections. Bernie recorded the song in 1987, and our studio is in the same building where he recorded it. He’s a terrible singer. (Laughs.) We did the best job we could interpreting this American song, and we let it speak for itself. We brought people in, arranged it and made it heartfelt. We sent it to the campaign and they shared it directly on the campaign page. There were more than 600,000 views. It’s the most meaningful experience I’ve ever had as a singer and musician. Why was it so meaningful? I get to perform my own music all the time, and it’s great. But putting my music and voice and heart toward a bigger cause is the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. I struggle with the ego involved in promoting myself. This experience of using music to say I’m with the thinkers and I’m behind this person who is fighting for so many of the things that are so overdue. That’s more gratifying than anything else I’ve ever done. You were with the campaign when he won the New Hampshire primary. Yes, and I feel like I could cry talking about it. There were big screens showing the news and hundreds of supporters waiting for the results to come in. It was amazing being in that room for his largest victory. It was an incredible moment. And it was like, holy shit. This weird, disheveled guy from Vermont, people are really taking notice of him. I felt hope. People talked about that with Obama, and I’m proud to have lived through his presidency, but this was pretty astounding. I’m still processing it. How do you feel about where the campaigns are now? I’m concerned about this election cycle. To have such polar opposites as different as Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton is really scary. It’s great that Bernie came as far as he did, and it gave me hope for the next 50 years, because young people really mobilized around him. That’s going to continue to grow. I’m terrified that we have two candidates running who are both very establishment and very untrustworthy. I’m not happy at all with the choices. But I think and hope in four years, we’ll see the new generation of political leaders who Bernie mobilized. SNT

Advice from the Artist It’s threefold. If you can do all three things at the same time and stick with it, you’ll be OK. 1. Stay healthy. Figure out how to take care of yourself when you’re performing a lot. It’s hard. 2. Stay organized. I struggle with this the most. Aligning the business side of things is very important. 3. Know you’ll fail a lot, and you have to keep going. Believe in yourself and whatever your thing is. Everyone’s thing is different. It’s very tempting to see what’s popular and change your thing to be like that. Believe you’re cool and you have something special. Keep yourself unique. Do you.

Stage of Nations event taps stronger, deeper roots

F

By Chris Malone

or the seventh year in a row, the Stage of Nations Blue Rain ECOFest will be held in Hanover Square, celebrating the Haudenosaunee culture and people of the six encompassed nations. This component of the Arts Week festival, which takes place Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30, highlights the importance of environmentally friendly practices and conservation to protect our planet. “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it,” Irv Lyons Jr. stated, who is an integral part of co-organizing this year’s festivities. The local musician and advocate said that maintaining the concept of the festival is important, but changing or adding to the offerings keeps the event interesting and engaging. In a separate conversation, Central New York Jazz executive director Larry Luttinger said the festival will be “even more robust this year – a footprint that is twice as big.” He’s not talking about a carbon footprint, however. At the Sustainability Academy, a partnership between Save the Rain and Connect the Drops, there will be interactive exhibits, movies with environmental themes and a rain barrel giveaway. Luttinger said, “I do feel Central New York is setting a trend nationally for alternative power, and a lot has to be said about Onondaga County’s commitment.” The ECOFest, held in one of the cozier nooks of downtown Syracuse, always draws attention to itself. The joyful sounds of dancers and music, the aroma of food and the animated conversations hook patrons passing through to the Northeast Jazz and Wine Fest, the Syracuse New Times and Family Times Street Painting event and the Arts and Crafts Festival. Throughout the years, the square seems to pack more people in, and the people have to almost spill out into the surrounding streets.

To complement the next-door jazz jams, the Stage of Nations features blues musicians. Lyons, whose Ripcords are headlining Saturday night. Morris Tarbell, who is of Mohawk descent, will be returning this year with his Hepcats along with Grupo Pagan Lite, Kay & the Miracle Cure and Johnny Ray & the Stonethrowers. Lyons referred to the latter, which headlines on Friday night, as “the hottest group around.” Peter Jemison, a member of the Heron Clan of the Seneca Nation and emcee of the festival, will present The Ganondagan Dancers for several performances. “It is my pleasure to return to the Stage of Nations,” Jemison said through an email. “I was the emcee for the dancers a few years back and enjoyed doing it.” He’s also bringing members of several nations to sing social tunes, referred to as “Songs of the Earth.” The annual smoke dancing competition will take place Saturday evening. Lyons stated that there will be around 100 competitors for the event, topping last year’s count. Along with the stone carvings of Tom Huff, authentic clothing and jewelry and a scholarship fundraiser, the Stage of Nations proves its growth. Lyons continues to appreciate the support of the community, including the sponsors, and the positive feedback. “People are very humble. What it comes down to is neighbors getting together with neighbors.” SNT syracusenewtimes.com | 7.27.16 - 8.2.16

Arts and Crafts Festival 2015. Michael Davis photo

ARTS & CRAFTS

Craft Festival Continues to ‘Glow’ By Chris Malone

T

he annual Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival celebrates its 46th anniversary this year. Around 160 local and regional painters, carpenters, metal workers, clothes designers and more will set up their pop-ups in and around Columbus Circle. This festival, which will take place Friday, July 29, through Saturday, July 31, is one of the staples of the Arts Week celebration gracing most of the greater downtown area.

Alice Maggiore, communications coordinator for Downtown Committee of Syracuse, explained that this year’s festival will highlight the experience garnered from previous years. It’s not necessarily making the festival bigger and better, since there is only so much space to work with, but it is living up to expectations. The juried show, one which hundreds of artists apply and a small committee determines which vendors get invited, is accompanied by changing entertainment throughout the day. “We will have strolling street entertainers, costumed dance groups, local singers and songwriters. There will also be unique treats and festival foods,” Maggiore said. “We’ve tried something new this year,” she added. “We’ve created a Pinterest board (DowntownSYR) highlighting a sampling of some of the works you’ll see.” There is always room for new aspects and activities. Thanks to a state grant secured by state Sen. John A. DeFrancisco and CNY Arts, on Saturday, July 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Downtown Committee and 40 Below Public Arts Task Force will present the all-ages workshop “Forecasting the Future: Activating Downtown’s Alleyways.” The free activity will take place in the walkway between the Onondaga County Court House and the Mulroy Civic Center. People will be able to decorate lanterns modeled after AXA Tower’s weather star. In similar fashion to the weather-predicting bulb, participants are asked to write their own expectations for downtown Syracuse for the years ahead. “We’d like to invite people to decorate the lanterns,” Maggiore said, “with their wishes, predictions for downtown. It’s what they’d like our city to look like or see happen here. We wanted some way to tie in the history of Syracuse with the future.” The finished nylon lanterns will then be displayed in our city’s alleyways. Lantern decorators are encouraged to share their designs through social media with the hashtag, #stARTcuse. “The Arts and Crafts Festival is a great opportunity to check out downtown if you haven’t been in a while.” she said. “There is a lot of activity, so much vibrancy and many other things happening this weekend.” Along with the vendors, the Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival, Blue Rain ECOFest and the annual Syracuse New Times and Family Times Street Painting event will also be adding to the finale of Arts Week. STREET PAINTING

The festival favorite gets a fresh coat By Chris Malone

T

he Syracuse New Times and Family Times will present the annual Street Painting Festival on Saturday, July 30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hands-on, illustrative event chalks up another unique activity as part of downtown’s Arts Week. The family-friendly event simply requires registration and a bucket of chalk, which is provided or you can bring your own. Participants will hit the streets around City Hall on Montgomery Street to bring the area to its most colorful potential. For youth (ages 12 and younger) and teens (13 to 17), the cost is $10. Adults (18 and older) pay $20. The cost raises $5 on Saturday (rain date is Sunday, July 31). Here are a few Street Painting tips to be prepared: Don’t forget the sunscreen; knee pads will protect and keep those patellas padded; bring a spray bottle with water, because chalkboard erasers won’t work on pavement or hands; keep a towel or two handy to help

with changing chalk colors; and aerosol hairspray will help seal the artwork and extend its lifespan. The competition component is returning with firstand second-place cash prizes awarded to artists in adult ($150 and $75), teen ($75 and $50) and youth ($50 and $25) categories. Honorable mentions for each category and the People’s Choice winner will take home gift certificates to local businesses. Other returning components include the Syracuse New Times paper box decorating contest. Registration is $25, and anyone 13 years or older can participate. The decorated boxes will pop up around the Central New York area, holding our free weekly papers.

This year’s resident artist Tommy Lincoln will be meandering around the festival. Lincoln, who is one of the city’s most active artists, will be painting a paper box using the historic Marriott Syracuse Downtown hotel as inspiration, which will sit on its premises. T-shirts will also be available at the event and can currently be purchased at syracusenewtimes.com for $10. The heathered gray shirts feature an urban art appeal, designed by Greg Minix of our creative team. In addition to the Street Painting’s obvious curb appeal, there will be more live entertainment. Enjoy the splashdowns of a dunk tank, while Wanderer’s Rest Humane Association will bring four-legged friends for everyone to meet and hopefully adopt. Coco the Clown will paint your face when you’re taking a break or passing through. And Recess Coffee’s downtown location, 110 Montgomery St., is a chalk stick’s throw away, so cold brew coffee is easily accessible. Head to syracusenewtimes.com/street-painting-2016 for more information and to register. Keep the tradition and the fervor alive. Considering the recent talk and efforts to visually revamp Syracuse, including the discussion about the concrete wall behind the Museum of Science and Technology, who knows what next venture could spring from this year’s competition. HARBORFEST

C

By Sarah Hope

Regina Bonelli.

REGINA BONELLI BRINGS BLUES TO OSWEGO HARBORFEST

R

egina Bonelli will make her Central New York debut this weekend at Oswego Harborfest. Joined by Michael Hill and his Blues Mob, Bonelli will play selections from her 2015 album Open Up The Door, as well as blues classics and new material, on the East Park Jazz and Blues stage on Friday, July 29, 7:30 p.m.

Born in Brooklyn, Bonelli grew up in house filled with music. Her father was an amateur guitarist and pianist and her older sisters played the piano. The family listened to everything the

14

1970s had to offer, from Motown to Joni Mitchell to The Beatles. “There was always music happening in the house,” Bonelli said. “I started playing the piano, picking up tunes from the TV when I was 3 or 4.” Bonelli began to take classical piano lessons at age 5. At 12, she decided it was time for a change, so she took up the guitar. She learned the basics from her father, then taught herself to play. By age 15, Bonelli was writing her own songs; at age 18, she was performing those tracks around New York City. When she wasn’t gigging, Bonelli was watching blues artists she idolized, including Big Mama Thornton, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Howlin’ Wolf and Ann Peebles. After a decade of performing, Bonelli and her eightpiece band, the Bottom Line, were spotted by a Star Search talent scout in Greenwich Village. Although the group was initially hesitant, they decided it was an opportunity they could not refuse. “At first we thought it was corny,” Bonelli said, laughing. The group of original songwriters had a dubious opinion of the popular network show. “But then they told us that we would all be getting into the AFTRA union (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), and they were going to fly us out to Hollywood and put us up in the Beverly Hills Hotel.” The group played their original music on national television three times, including in an international competition. Although she gravitated toward mostly funk music in her early career, Bonelli says she was drawn to the blues after experiencing a series of frustrating challenges. Her father died when she was 15, shortly after giving her a special gift: her signature Martin D28 guitar. Later, as a single mother of two girls with little family support, Bonelli went through a period of unemployment and struggled to make ends meet. Throughout her life, she turned to the blues as a way to express herself.

Ultimately, as evidenced by her danceable debut album, Bonelli found positivity in the outlet that music gave her. She was dubbed the “Reigning Queen of New York City Blues” by Big City Rhythm & Blues magazine and inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame in 2013. The featured band on the album, the Blues Mob, includes Michael Hill (guitar), William McClellan Jr. (drums), Pete Cummings (bass), Mike Griot (bass), Kevin Hill (bass and horn arrangements) and David Barnes (harmonica). They are the penultimate act on the East Park Jazz and Blues stage, just before Reverend Raven & the Chain Smoking Altar Boys featuring Westside Andy Linderman on harmonica. Friday’s lineup will also feature King Chro and the Talismen, the Diana Jacobs Band, and Steve Grills and the Roadmasters. Other highlights of the 2016 Harborfest include children’s activities, vendors, craft tents and more than 35 musical acts including Blues Traveler, Dennis DeYoung of Styx, Enter the Haggis and DownBeat Percussion. For a full schedule of the weekend’s events, visit oswegoharborfest.com. Bonelli said she was happy to hear that Central New York has such a vibrant local music scene, with festivals all summer long. She is looking forward to staying in town for a day or two to check out other artists. “I feel really strongly about musicians supporting one another,” Bonelli said. “It’s such a great community, especially the blues community. Sometimes the acts you’ve never even heard of, they can be the ones that inspire you the most.” SNT

FIRST-PLACE FINISH FOR THIRD The late Wendy Wasserstein (19502006) was not only a deeply autobiographical playwright, but she usually appointed one of the characters to be her spokesperson, or mouthpiece. George Bernard Shaw did this all the time. Want to know what she thought of George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq on bogus evidence? Check out Third, running through Saturday, July 30, at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre. What makes Wasserstein’s last work so unusual is that her mouthpiece is not always right, and her dramatic arc rises with her comeuppance. Quite apart from Third’s barbed humor, the play is affecting in unexpected ways. Candidly, it was not fabulously well received in 2005, and is not often revived. But Michael Barakiva, acting artistic director at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre, worked with Wasserstein at the time of her writing Third. He knows the play’s secrets and rabbit holes that previous productions have ignored. Wasserstein was gravely ill with lymphoma then, about which she was discreet. Looking at it today, we can see that the play’s dialogue is filled with metaphors of mortality. And Third, for all its jokes, is a cry from the heart. The scene is an unnamed liberal arts college in New England, where arguing 7.27.16 - 8.2.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

about the great works of English literature is the dominant activity. Fiftyish professor Laurie Jameson (Dee Pelletier) is highly opinionated and demanding but overwhelmingly popular, not unlike Barbra Streisand in the 1996 movie The Mirror Has Two Faces. Surprising in a woman of such high academic and social status, she tends to flaunt her CV in conversation: “Then I was at Harvard, then I was on Oxford, and on a Fulbright.” Status is all. She asks how an absent woman could be dismissed, especially when she’s a Guggenheim-winning poet. Her antagonist is a fresh-faced WASP boy named Woodson Bull III (David Patterson). Jameson wants to call him “Woody” and asks if he was named for Woody Guthrie. He prefers to be called “Third,” a reminder that his father and grandfather attended the same college, before (ahem), “it went co-ed.” Third likes to mix reading, putting Reggie Jackson’s memoir next to Frantz Fanon’s anti-colonial treatise, The Wretched of the Earth. Third is also a wrestler and a Republican. When Third submits a paper on King Lear, exhibiting penetrating insights and profound knowledge of contemporary theory, Jameson immediately assumes he could not have written it and charges him with plagiarism. The dispute goes before

a committee where, to her shock, Jameson loses. Voting for Third’s integrity is one of Jameson’s best friends, Nancy Gordon (Catherine Weidner), who is older, has been undergoing chemotherapy and wears a turban. A secularist but alone, she has been finding comfort by dating a rabbi. Nancy’s vote, rather implausibly, does not sunder their friendship. And, somehow, Nancy never makes a case for Third. That falls to Jameson’s daughter Emilie (Eunice Akinola), an African-American, who is an undergraduate elsewhere, seemingly fulfilling her mother’s ideals and philosophy. Unexpectedly, she meets Third at a local tavern, where he is bartending to pick up extra cash. As Third cannot comprehend that Emilie could be Jameson’s daughter, he unloads on the professor in harsh terms. But he also spells out his side of the case, which we have not heard until now. The daughter realizes as we do, and Laurie must eventually, that Third has been misrepresented by gender, race and class stereotypes every bit as much as marginalized and suppressed groups have. Meanwhile, Laurie must contend with her aged father Jack (Malcolm Ingram), supposedly suffering from dementia, who nonetheless speaks the kind of grounded wisdom that comes from the Fool in King Lear. A stranger in the groves of academe, Jack was a toy retailer who struggled to put his daughter through the best colleges. Cocky as Laurie Jameson is in the first act, she takes on an autumnal tone in the second. In addition to Nancy’s and Jack’s problems, Jameson says she is suffering the hot flashes of menopause, an unmistakable metaphor that opening night audiences 12 years ago could not guess. Director Barakiva also has actress Pelletier soften Laurie’s voice as we wind toward the end. Despite Third’s structural flaws, this is a winning production, obviously a labor of love. Pelletier’s Jameson takes a long journey from strident self-assurance to humility and acceptance. As the conservative we come to regard, David Patterson might someday look into playing William F. Buckley Jr. And Third is probably the last local appearance for British actor and longtime Syracuse University Drama Department professor Malcolm Ingram. Just before he leaves town, he steals every scene he’s in. SNT

PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services at 1-800-342-3736 or visit

the Department’s website at www.dfs.ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) The people of many cultures have imagined the sun god as possessing masculine qualities. But in some traditions, the Mighty Father is incomplete without the revitalizing energies of the Divine Mother. The Maoris, for example, believe that every night the solar deity has to marinate in her nourishing uterine bath. Otherwise he wouldn’t be strong enough to rise in the morning. And how does this apply to you? Well, you currently have resemblances to the weary old sun as it dips below the horizon. I suspect it’s time to recharge your powers through an extended immersion in the deep, dark waters of the primal feminine. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) An Interesting Opportunity is definitely in your vicinity. It may slink tantalizingly close to you in the coming days, even whisper your name from afar. But I doubt that it will knock on your door. It probably won’t call you seven times on the phone or flash you a big smile or send you an engraved invitation. So you should make yourself alert for the Interesting Opportunity’s unobtrusive behavior. It could be a bit shy or secretive or modest. Once you notice it, you may have to come on strong -- you know, talk to it sweetly or ply it with treats. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Editor’s note: The

counsel offered in the following oracle was channeled from the Goddess by Rob Brezsny. If you have any problems with it, direct your protests to the Queen Wow, not Brezsny. It’s time to get more earthy and practical about practicing your high ideals and spiritual values. Translate your loftiest intentions into your most intimate behavior. Ask yourself, “How does Goddess want me to respond when my co-worker pisses me off?” or “How would Goddess like me to brush my teeth and watch TV and make love?” For extra credit, get a t-shirt that says, “Goddess was my co-pilot, but we crash-landed in the wilderness and I was forced to eat her.”

spots. You might find a satisfactory substitute for kissing the sky.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) For many years, my

occupation was “starving artist.” I focused on improving my skills as a writer and musician, even though those activities rarely earned me any money. To ensure my survival, I worked as little as necessary at low-end jobs: scrubbing dishes at restaurants, digging ditches for construction companies, delivering newspapers in the middle of the night, and volunteering for medical experiments. During the long hours spent doing tasks that had little meaning to me, I worked diligently to remain upbeat. One trick that worked well was imagining future scenes when I would be engaged in exciting creative work that paid me a decent wage. It took a while, but eventually those visions materialized in my actual life. I urge you to try this strategy in the coming months, Libra. Harness your mind’s eye in the service of generating the destiny you want to inhabit.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You have every right to celebrate your own personal Independence Day sometime soon. In fact, given the current astrological omens, you’d be justified in embarking on a full-scale emancipation spree in the coming weeks. It will be prime time to seize more freedom and declare more autonomy and build more self-sufficiency. Here’s an important nuance to the work you have ahead of you: Make sure you escape the tyranny of not just the people and institutions that limit your sovereignty, but also the voices in your own head that tend to hinder your flow. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Of all the forbidden fruits that you fantasize about, which one is your favorite? Among the intriguing places you consider to be outside of your comfort zone, which might inspire you to redefine the meaning of “comfort”? The coming weeks will be a favorable time to reconfigure your relationship with these potential catalysts. And while you’re out on the frontier dreaming of fun experiments, you might also want to flirt with other wild cards and strange attractors. Life is in the mood to tickle you with useful surprises. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have a special talent for accessing wise innocence. In some ways you’re virginal, fresh and raw, and in other ways you’re mature, seasoned and well-developed. I hope you will regard this not as a confusing paradox but rather as an exotic strength. With your inner child and your inner mentor working in tandem, you could accomplish heroic feats of healing. Their brilliant collaboration could also lead to the mending of an old rift.

feathers gliding on the wind. Before eating potato chips, examine each one to see if it bears a likeness of Rihanna or the Virgin Mary. Keep an eye out, too, for portents like robots wearing dreadlocked wigs or antique gold buttons lying in the gutter or senior citizens cursing at invisible Martians. The appearance of anomalies like these will be omens that suggest you will soon be the recipient of crazy good fortune. But if you would rather not wait around for chance events to trigger your good luck, simply make it your fierce intention to generate it. Use your optimism-fueled willpower and your flair for creative improvisation. You will have abundant access to these talents in the coming weeks.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) “Where is

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You have just begun your big test. How are you doing so far? According to my analysis, the preliminary signs suggest that you have a good chance of proving the old maxim, “If it doesn’t make you so crazy that you put your clothes on insideout and try to kiss the sky until you cry, it will help you win one of your biggest arguments with Life.” In fact, I suspect we will ultimately see you undergo at least one miraculous and certifiably melodramatic transformation. A wart on your attitude could dissolve, for example. A luminous visitation may heal one of your blind

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Millions of Pisceans less fortunate than you won’t read this horoscope. Uninformed about the rocky patch of Yellow Brick Road that lies just ahead, they may blow a gasket or get a flat tire. You, on the other hand, will benefit from my oracular foreshadowing, as well as my inside connections with the Lords of Funky Karma. You will therefore be likely to drive with relaxed caution, keeping your vehicle unmarred in the process. That’s why I’m predicting that although you may not arrive speedily at the next leg of your trip, you will do so safely and in style.

everybody when I need them?” Even if you haven’t actually spoken those words recently, I’m guessing the voices in your head have whispered them. But from what I can tell, that complaint will soon be irrelevant. It will no longer match reality. Your allies will start offering more help and resources. They may not be perfectly conscientious in figuring out how to be of service, but they’ll be pretty good. Here’s what you can do to encourage optimal results: 1. Purge your low, outmoded expectations. 2. Open your mind and heart to the possibility that people can change. 3. Humbly ask out loud, not just in the privacy of your imagination, for precisely what you want.
