Road Less Traveled

Canadian Anton Pilipa, 39, who suffers from schizophrenia, was discovered — safe — in the Amazon rainforest state of Rondonia, Brazil, in November 2016, which was the first sighting of him since his disappearance in March 2012. He was unable to communicate well and had no ID or money, but his family has actively been searching for him and believe the only way he could have traveled from the family home in Scarborough, Ontario, to Brazil (6,300 miles) was by hitchhiking or walking. The area in which he was found is noted for alligators and snakes.

Legal Loophole

Suzette Welton has been in prison in Alaska for 17 years based almost solely on now-debunked forensic evidence, but the state’s lack of a clemency process means she cannot challenge her life sentence unless she proves “complete” innocence. Evidence that the fire that killed her son was “arson” was based not on science but on widely believed (but wrong) folklore on how intentional fires burn differently than accidental ones. The bogus arson “trademarks” are similar to those used to convict Texan Cameron Todd Willingham, who suffered an even worse fate than Welton’s: Willingham was executed for his “arson” in 2004.

As Taunton, Mass., police were about to arrest Amy Rebello-McCarthy, 39, for DUI after she left the road and crashed through several mailboxes, with the crash causing all of her tires to deflate, she, laughing, told officers there was one other thing: She had a bearded dragon in her bra, where it was riding while she drove.

The lizard was turned over to animal control.

That Old-Time Religion

For the 31st consecutive Easter in the Philippines, Ruben Enaje, 57, was among the throngs of devout Christians who slashed their own torsos bloody, then flogged themselves repeatedly as they marched through the streets to demonstrate homage to God. And dozens of men in San Pedro Cutud, Santa Lucia and other villages replicated the crucifixion of Jesus by having sterilized 4-inch nails driven into their own arms and legs. The Catholic Church, as usual, “banned” the extreme acts, to little effect.

School Daze

On testing day in March for Romania’s 14- and 15-year-olds, administrators

of the country’s popular DEX online dictionary, acting on suspicion, changed the definitions of two words likely to be improperly looked up by cheaters during the exam. “(H)undreds” of school searches for the words took place that morning, but administrators were still mulling an appropriate punishment for the cheaters, who were easily identified by their misapplication of the suspect words.

Fine Points of the Law

In a legislative battle waged since a 1979 state court decision, some North Carolinians tried once again this year to change a state law that explicitly states that once a person (almost always, of course, a “female”) has “consented” to an act of sexual intercourse, that consent cannot be withdrawn — even if the encounter turns violent. The violence might be prosecuted as an “assault,” but never the more serious crime of “rape.”

Said state Sen. Jeff Jackson, whose bill to change the law failed in April to get a legislative hearing, “We’re the only state in the country where ‘no’ doesn’t mean ‘no.’”

Milky Way

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam argues that his “hands are tied” by “federal food laws” and that fresh, “all-natural” milk with the cream skimmed off the top cannot be sold in Florida as milk or skim milk but must be labeled “imitation milk” — unless the “all-natural” milk adds (artificial) vitamin A to the product. A family farm in the state’s panhandle (Ocheesee Creamery) decided to challenge the law, and Putnam, who recently announced his candidacy for governor, said he would try to resolve the issue soon.

That’s Show Biz

Marcela Iglesias announced that she has formed the Plastics of Hollywood agency for would-be celebrities who have radically transformed their bodies. Iglesias’ business has human “Ken” dolls (Rodrigo Alves and Justin Jedlica), the Argentine “elf” Luis Padron, a Jessica Rabbit look-alike (Pixee Fox), and seven others who, Iglesias figures, have collectively spent almost $3 million on surgery and procedures, some of which are ongoing.

EMPIRE STATE NEEDS A FULL-TIME LEGISLATURE It’s the dog days of summer for members of the New York Legislature. They are back in their districts, some not too far from the regular duties of lawmaking, but all of them a far cry from the cold January day when they reconvene in Albany for another legislative session.

They’ll talk of their big plans. They’ll pass another budget in secret. They won’t pass ethics reform. They’ll end the session in June with a flurry of rushed bills and then proclaim it the most productive session they’ve ever had.

It’s the same, short six-month song and dance that we’ve always known. But there are many, including Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who believe that song and dance should change.

Earlier this year, the governor proposed that the state establish a constitutional amendment that makes the New York Legislature a full-time job. How fortunate for us that the option for a constitutional

convention in 2018 happens to be on voters’ ballots this fall.

Speaking of voters, they strongly support the idea of a full-time legislature. A February 2016 Siena College poll found that 60 percent of people statewide are on board — with good reason.

Elected legislative jobs are currently considered part time, meaning many lawmakers have side jobs back in their home districts. Most of them are at law firms and insurance agencies, but some also hold positions as musicians and ministers.

It is important to know this, since many have made quite a stink in the last year about not getting a pay raise. Each lawmaker receives an annual $79,500 net pay, which, for many, includes stipends. They haven’t received a pay raise since 1998, and that’s a long time without one.

But when that $79,500 is combined with outside income, it’s doubtful that any legislator is really struggling to get

by and is in serious need of a 47 percent pay increase, which was preposterously proposed last summer. Indeed, six state senators earned at least $100,000 in outside income in 2015.

A full-time legislature would put an end to the pay raise debate. And a reasonable payment for full-time work would diminish any need for outside income.

By banning outside income, we eliminate a lot of avenues that eventually lead to corrupt politicians. It doesn’t require much thought to realize that a system where lawmakers spend half the year in other types of work can easily lead to conflicts of interest in how they govern, and to less-than-good intentions that cross legal borders.

The scandal that disgraced former state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was the result of his outside work. He made a lot of money in that outside work, including $4 million in kickbacks after he funneled some $500,000 in state grants to a Columbia University doctor who, in return, sent his patients to Silver’s law firm — which then paid Silver for the referrals.

Silver also voted for state tax breaks for a real estate company, which then steered business to a law firm, from which he also received referral fees.

Silver’s not alone. A good portion of the corruption that has plagued Albany for the last decade has been tied to legislators’ dealings outside of Albany. A full-time legislature certainly wouldn’t cure corruption overall, but it would be a significant

step in the right direction. Once outside income is eliminated, a full-time legislature can improve the actual governing process.

Our state’s politics won’t be defined by leaders hammering out all of the details of major legislation behind closed doors. Our governing won’t revolve around what’s in the state budget every spring. The two months between budget negotiations and the end of session won’t be a wasteland of legislative action. Then we won’t follow that period of inactivity with crunching deadlines in June where lawmakers pass bills that haven’t been properly vetted, or at times even read.

Then maybe we won’t need to waste taxpayer money having “extraordinary sessions” that are meant to finish business that should’ve been finished during the time legislators had, like the one we had in 2017. And while it was work that needed to be done, that extraordinary session New York had this year was anything but extraordinary.

We have the opportunity next year to fundamentally transform how our state operates. Our elected representatives in Albany are doing what they like to call “public service.” While we appreciate those who sacrifice their time and effort to do that, a government in New York that doesn’t concentrate all of its time and energy on the government in New York does not live up to “public service.” It is actually the biggest disservice to the public that can be imagined. HOUSE HUNTING WITH JEREMY GARELICK

The activities of moviemaker Jeremy Garelick made for some hot copy on the showbiz website Deadline Hollywood, which reported July 26 on his plans for the Liverpool School of Cinema in the former A.V. Zogg Middle School in the village of Liverpool. Deadline announced that Garelick has partnered with LD Entertainment to bankroll $50 million into the production of a series of teen-geared movie comedies under the American High banner.

In a March 1 interview with the Syracuse New Times, Garelick stated that his idea sprang from his affection for high school movies, especially the output of teen-flick auteur John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off). “My college screenwriting professor told me that everything in pop culture runs on 20-

year cycles, so that concept always stuck with me. So for the past 16 years I’ve been waiting for this next spike to happen and planning for the making of several low-budget high school-type movies in the vein of John Hughes.”

Although acquisition of the Zogg building is nearly a done deal, Garelick is nevertheless gearing up to produce his first film in Syracuse next month. But first he needs a house that meets the specifications of the movie script, so he’s sending out a rather unique casting call.

According to Liverpool School of Cinema representative Amy Breuer, “The film is a comedy that follows the relationship struggles of a newly married couple, the older neighbors who have lost their spark, and the tension that ensues when an old college roommate stays over for

the weekend.” The production schedule will tentatively run from Sept. 10 to Oct. 1, with most of the film taking place at that house.

“Jeremy is looking for a well-maintained house, preferably a colonial style, but not mandatory, that two, married, successful lawyers in their mid-30s might live in,” Breuer said. “The house should be on about a half-acre to an acre of land that’s not right on top of the neighbors, but not far away, and located in a neighborhood with trees and some character, meaning no brand-new developments.

“The house itself should not be a mansion, nor should it look cheap,” Breuer continued. “It should have a large attractive foyer, a modern, updated kitchen with an island, preferably with a view of the backyard, a spacious living room, hardwood floors (preferably darker wood), spacious bedrooms, updated bathrooms, a spacious master bathroom with tub, and a pool in the backyard.”

BIRTHDAY SURPRISES HIGHLIGHT MARRIOTT’S FIRST YEAR A year after the much-anticipated resurrection of the Hotel Syracuse as the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, 100 E. Onondaga St., the historic phoenix has risen from the ashes. Owner Ed Riley and his team have proven what they promised thus far with the $76 million improvement project.

“We have a heck of a city. This is one of our jewels,” Riley said. “We look at our jobs as stewards, making sure this asset, its property and its bones are available to the community and to show off what Syracuse can do.”

General manager Paul McNeil noted, “The first year has been a fantastic journey and unchartered territory. I think we’re in the top 15 percent of the company for first-year hotels.”

According to a recent press release, 260 new jobs have been created in the 261-room hotel, plus 23 state-of-the-art event rooms. ARC of Onondaga, other local businesses and visiting guests have

utilized the Marriott for special events, weddings and more. The property also emphasizes community involvement in a unique fashion.

“Every month we identify a nonprofit nominated by one of our associates in the hotel,” said McNeil, “an organization that enhances the quality of life for our neighborhood.”

“A percentage of every dollar spent here goes into a fund,” Riley noted. “If the hotel does well, the pot begins to grow.

The staff decides on where to donate to. A lot of the nonprofits that received contributions from us this year are groups that have directly affected the lives of our associates.” Among the local charities and nonprofits to receive a $2,000 grant donated by the Marriott are Literacy CNY, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities and InterFaith Works.

traditions such as New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Parade bashes. “To see it once again as a vital player in the local economy and social fabric of Syracuse fulfills a long-held dream,” said Riley.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, the 1924 historic landmark celebrates its first birthday. This week’s festivities feature a Friday, Aug. 18, proclamation by Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner at noon. Food and drink specials will be offered by the hotel’s two restaurants: Eleven Waters, with an emphasis on local- and Finger Lakes region-themed selections, and Shaughnessy’s Irish Pub, a sports bar that also celebrates the area’s deep cultural roots.

Leading up to the proclamation, the marketing team has hidden five empty wine bottles throughout the city’s outdoor public spaces. The bottles contain a message inside, which must be returned to the hotel on Friday, Aug. 18. Every day a clue will be given to help track down each bottle.

On Aug. 15 the Marriott also celebrated its new designation as the official hotel of Syracuse University Athletics. An orange stripe was painted down a portion of South Warren Street, as management and staff donned orange attire, and mascot

Otto the Orange bounced about the premises. Shaughnessy’s staff shirts read “The Bark House,” giving a tail wag to the Carrier Dome’s Loud House nickname.

The South Warren block in front of the Marriott will be blocked off for threehour-long tailgate parties before the seven home football games. Of course, party goers will be able to venture inside the hotel in times of rain or snow.

“We’re proud to be a partner,” said newly minted Marriott marketing manager Michael John Heagerty during the press conference.

There are plenty of perks. Shaughnessy’s and Eleven Waters will provide indoor and outdoor food and beverage service. Bocce and cornhole games will be offered in the courtyard in front of the Syracuse Tech Garden, located across the street on South Warren Street. Those paying to park in the Marriott’s garage will have the option of free shuttle service to and from the games.

NO PARKING ON THE DANCE FLOOR AT HANOVER SQUARE’S SILENT DISCO Preventing heart disease might be as easy as getting some boogie fever. That’s the prescription for Silent Disco, a free event sponsored by the Syracuse chapter of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign at downtown’s Hanover Square on Thursday, Aug. 17, 6 to 10 p.m.

The goal is to raise awareness about heart disease and to get people in shape.

“Dancing is a great way to fight heart disease because it helps to manage weight,” said Go Red For Women director Trina Tardone. “An event like the Silent Disco feeds into what Go Red For Women is about. This is a chance for people to unite and fight heart disease.”

The “silent” aspect of the dance party comes from the light-up wireless headphones that participants will wear while listening to their musical choices. The headsets come in blue, pink and green

colors that represent the three deejays’ respective playlists. DJ Bella J will be on hand to compose danceable house music, while the other two setups will offer rock and disco from the 1980s and 1990s.

Tardone borrowed the idea from an event in Buffalo two years ago. “I could just see all of these headsets on people, and they were bopping up and down, and you could tell they were dancing really hard,” she recalled. “But you could tell everyone was dancing so different, you just knew they were all listening to different kinds of music. It’s really cool to watch.”

Participants will need a photo ID to obtain one of the 50 headsets. While the headsets will be swapped from one noggin to the next throughout the night, they will be promptly disinfected between uses.

Although food and drinks won’t be provided, existing businesses in and near Hanover Square, such as Maxwell’s, Prime Steakhouse and Otro Cinco, are more than up to the task of supplying sustenance to fatigued dancers. “It’s also kind of a cool way for economic development in Hanover Square for the merchants,” Tardone said.

Go Red For Women was started by the American Heart Association in 2004 to raise awareness about heart disease, which remains the No. 1 killer of women

in the United States. Since its inception 12 years ago, more than 674,000 women’s lives have been saved, and the rate of deaths in women from heart disease has decreased from 1-in-2 to 1-in-3. While this statistic is encouraging, Tardone says there is still much work to be done.

The Silent Disco’s ultimate goal is for the local community to bond over music while raising awareness about heart disease. “It’s kind of like you’re eating your peas and carrots and you don’t even know it,” Tardone said. SNT

A rare B-17 aircraft takes flight this weekend in Central New York Photos by Michael Davis

There are only a handful of B-17s that still exist after more than 70 years, which will easily explain why service veterans and plane crazies alike will make a beeline this weekend to Hancock International Airport to witness one of the last surviving models in action.

The Liberty Foundation’s 2017 Salute to Veterans Tour will display the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, nicknamed the “Madras Maiden” for its curvy nose art, at Hancock’s Signature Flight Support FBO runway, 248 Tuskegee Road, on Saturday, Aug. 19, and Sunday, Aug. 20, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Public flights take place in the morning, with ground tours in the afternoon.

The Madras Maiden was built in 1944 but never left stateside for World War II bombing runs. Instead, it was deployed to Wright Field to test the then-new radar technology and ground mapping. Retired military pilot Jim Lawrence will be flying the craft this weekend; “It’s an honor and a privilege to fly one of these things,” he noted.

Lawrence said that 12,735 B-17s were created during the war, with more than 4,000 lost in combat. Co-pilot John Hess divulged an equally sobering number: Whenever a B-17’s crew of 10 went on a mission, there was an 80 percent chance that they weren’t returning — and yet the crew members kept going back for more missions in defiance of those odds. Such were the sacrifices endured by the greatest generation.

“Our tour’s mission is to honor our veterans with the sights, sounds and smells of flight,” Hess said. Indeed, it will be difficult for locals to ignore the aircraft’s noisy attributes as it leisurely cruises at 150 mph with an altitude

of 2,000 feet during its half-hour sojourns over the Salt City neighborhoods. In contrast, the B-17s flew 30,000 feet high during World War II, with crew members wearing heated suits to stave off frostbite as temperatures dipped to 30 below.

For a $450 fee, riding aboard this Boeing bucket of bolts might be a dealbreaker for some, although Hess asserted, “Some people believe it’s the best money they ever spent.”

Just in terms of gas money, more than 100 gallons of fuel is used per flight. The money goes toward continued maintenance of the aircraft, as well as the restoration of another B-17 in Georgia. The Liberty Foundation spends more than $1.5 million each year to keep the Madras Maiden aloft, instead of being permanently grounded in a landlubber museum.

Ground tours of the B-17 are free, however; “We don’t want to turn anybody away from seeing this really cool plane,” said Hess. People can clamber aboard to witness the snug seating arrangements, the cockpit, the ball turret space (designed to accommodate gunners up to 6-feet-3 in height) and more.

Plenty of visitors’ noggins have also been dented by the plane’s interior design, as Lawrence deadpanned, “We’ve got quite the collection of DNA in there. Remember to duck!”

CANNED HEAT CHANNELS THE SUMMER OF LOVE AT RIDGESTOCK

N

ow in its third year, Ridgestock is celebrating more than the legendary Woodstock Festival held Aug. 15-17, 1969. This year’s Ridgestock, held at Chittenango’s Ridge Tavern, 1281 Salt Springs Road, on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2 p.m. to midnight, will host national acts Professor Louie and the Crowmatix and Canned Heat. And the Ridge will showcase its new amphitheater that was constructed behind the venue.

“It’s been a challenging and very transitional year for me,” says Ridge owner Melinda Sorrentino. “The Ridge has been an important place of emotional support for me. It’s a real well for me to go to. I realized that more in the last year than I did before. With that backdrop, when I had a thousand things coming at me, I decided not to hide under a rock, but to move some around.

“I didn’t want to dominate the land with a manmade structure,” Sorrentino continues. “I wanted to maintain the natural beauty of it. It’s almost heartshaped and just a beautiful space. I have a great respect for the land and how it’s laid out.”

The result is a gigantic amphitheater that looks so natural it would seem it had been there for decades.

Rocks form a semicircle around a stage large enough to support major music concerts.

Sorrentino hatched the idea several years ago after

starting both the Ridge and the nonprofit Clear Path for Veterans, which supports service members and their families. The tavern, the organization and the golf course were all created with the goal of supporting veterans in need.

The Ridge also mounts events including Bacon and Bourbon as well as a music tribute series that takes place inside the tavern and outdoors. The amphitheater was a way to bring those al fresco shows to the next level.

“It was important to me to do things differently,” Sorrentino says. “I didn’t want us to be Lakeview Amphitheater. It’s not the same.”

So Sorrentino enlisted Bob West of West Excavation to help her scope out the natural rocky resources she already had in her bar’s backyard. She also took advice from Jamie Notarthomas, a longtime musician with years of experience both playing and running

festivals, and Dan Coley, who helped develop a drainage system for the facility.

“It was an incredible amount of work,” she says. “But it came from the hearts and minds of creative people. The energy of the place has its own draw, and then to do something like this . . . I’ve heard that rocks hold spirit, and it feels like a special place. It’s significant. It’s another reason for people to come and see the evolution of it. I want people to be part of it and participate in it.”

This year’s Ridgestock will pay tribute to Woodstock, bringing the music of Santana, Janis Joplin, The Band, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker and more to life, with local acts including Grupo Pagan and Joe Whiting on the bill. But the day will also recognize the 1967 Summer of Love and the Monterey Pop Festival, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

“Canned Heat played there (Monterey Pop) two years before Woodstock,” Sorrentino says. “And we get to have them here.”

She also points out the importance of bringing the band for a personal reason.

Through Clear Path, Sorrentino got to know Korean War veteran Steven “Stacey” Kever, who lived in the Haight-Ashbury district during that Summer of Love.

Canned Heat was his favorite band and he was eagerly awaiting the festival, but he died just a few weeks ago. “It’s so sad, but it will be so good to honor him in that way,” Sorrentino says.

Although the amphitheater will be open and operational, Sorrentino still calls it a soft grand opening. “It took people decades to build something like this in the past,” she says. “It’s my personal goal to have it ready to receive people (at Ridgestock). I want people to feel involved and invested.”

LATE DRUMMER MIKE SECRETI HONORED AT SUNDAY BENEFIT

On Aug. 11, 2016, Syracuse musician Mike Secreti died at age 63 from complications after surgery. Although he had suffered from stage-four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and bladder, esophageal, colon and rectal cancer, it was only after surviving the removal of most of his esophagus that he died due to infections contracted at the hospital.

“He was fighting for more than 10 years,” says cousin Lou Segreti. “He was like a bull, he just kept going. Friends called him the old war horse. He just battled and battled and battled.”

On Sunday, Aug. 20, 2 p.m., a benefit show honoring Secreti’s 50 years of music will take place at Sharkey’s Bar and Grill, 7240 Oswego Road, Liverpool. There will be a $10 suggested donation at the door.

Raffles and a 50/50 will also take place.

The event will raise money for the family he left behind: Secreti’s wife, Sandy, and daughters, Jessica and Jamie.

The drummer made a name for himself playing with a host of area bands includ-

ing Chocolate Chips, Pyckett Fence, Garrland, Kane and Zoid. Lou Segreti also played with Mike in many of those bands.

“We grew up together since strollers,” Segreti says. “We got into music together when we were 12 years old. We were both drummers to begin with, but Michael always got better stuff than me. When I got a snare and cymbal, he got a whole kit.

We also knew we couldn’t be in a band together with us both being drummers, so I took up guitar.”

Segreti also took up keys and had a successful career playing for outfits including Bloodline with Joe Bonamassa, Erin Davis (son of Miles Davis), Waylon Krieger (son of Robby Krieger) and Berry Duane Oakley (son of Berry Oakley).

“I got to tour the country (with Bloodline) and do real shit, playing on Conan O’Brien and MTV,” Segreti says. “It was really cool being in that league, but when I came back, I played with Mike. I miss him so much. We grew up together, played music together, got in trouble

together. It was great.”

Segreti emphasizes that Secreti was one of the best drummers to come out of Syracuse, but that’s not all he was known for.

“We called him Big Foot,” Segreti says. “He had a big-ass foot and his foot pedal was so heavy. But I want people to remember that everybody loved him. He was a storyteller. People loved him for that. He’d tell the same stories. I told him he should put out a book: short stories made long by Mike Secreti. The stories were too long, but just great and everybody knew it.”

Bands slated to perform Sunday include the Lawless Brothers (which features Jim Edinger, Secreti’s doctor), Kane, Windsong, Super Hero, AlecStar and Zoid (including Segreti, Harold Mantor, Jim Richer, Todd Troubetaris and Jon Celi).

Segreti hopes they’ll raise money to help the Secreti family through the medical bills they’re still facing.

“These bands haven’t played together in a while, but they’re gonna be great,” Segreti promises. “I really want to raise money (for the family). I loved him (Mike). I miss him.” SNT

MUSICAL BROTHEL BLAST PROVIDES SOUTHERN COMFORT

Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse has a well-established regional reputation and it often seems ready for a national ranking. Consider the credits of director-choreographer Parker Esse, in charge of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which runs through Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Not only does Esse have golden Broadway and regional credits, but this summer he has also worked on Oklahoma! at Cooperstown’s Glimmerglass Festival and Me and My Girl at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. From what we see on the stage in Auburn, Whorehouse compares well with what one sees at both of those companies.

of the original production. The frequently edgy, satirical stage show should not be confused with the saccharine 1982 movie starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds.

The glamorous female lead, Miss Mona Stangley (Sally Wilfert), the house’s madam, is an honest, nurturing businesswoman. Similarly, the male lead, Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (Ryan Andes), has a keen eye for injustice within and without the law but is going his own way. Despite a transparent shared deep affection, this is not their love story.

Even so, Wilfert’s Mona and Andes’ Sheriff are at the core of the action. As compelling as their musical numbers are, both portray characters with more depth and nuance than the cartoons they may sound like or what the movie made of them. The show may be a comedy, yet both leads are contending with life-changing crises.

A magazine article by the late journalist Larry L. King (not the old guy who used to be on CNN) inspired Whorehouse, and most of the characters and themes in it have counterparts in real life. The villain of the show is arch-hypocrite Melvin P. Thorpe (sharply played by Jamison Stern), a muckraker decked out in a discount white toupee appearing on Houston television. His resemblance to the actual TV reporter Marvin Zindler was close enough to invite libel suits. In fitting with the construction of the show, he makes his accusations in the upbeat production numbers “Watchdog Team,” and even better, “Texas Has a Whorehouse in It,” with the female chorus, now called “Dogettes,” holding oversize flashlights.

Whorehouse teases and stings. It does not harangue. One of the most hilarious numbers is “The Sidestep,” in which the evasive governor (Neal Mayer), Senator

Wingwoah (Brad Rupp) and aides all sashay away from any scrutiny that would link them to Miss Mona’s Chicken Ranch, even though they’ve long afforded themselves of the pleasures to be purchased there.

Neither does Whorehouse meditate on the personal or health costs of legalized prostitution. We enter the Chicken Ranch with potential employees Dawn (Lizz Picini) and Shy (Rachelle Rose Clark) seeking places on the roster. Shy, as the name signals, is completely inexperienced in the ways of the flesh. Miss Mona, whom a narrator tells us was once a working girl before becoming management, is immediately accepting and supportive in the first big production number, “20 Fans.”

Scenic designer Chad Healy’s large set makes the action look more massive than it is. Not only is there a wide dance area downstage, but the Chicken Ranch exists on three floors, with bedrooms at left and right and an intriguing stairway leading up to yet another unseen floor. Sometimes the bedrooms are covered with translucent scrims so that the activity going on can be seen in silhouette, and Jose Santiago’s lighting design makes sure we know.

Thus, a show about the sex business remains PG rather than becoming R. Few numbers in Carol Hall’s score — well-served by music director Corinne Aquilina, leading an orchestra of nine — have gone on to have a life of their own. Probably the best-known is the country-themed “Hard Candy Christmas,” delivered by Angel (Siri Howard), the Ranch girl we have come to know best; the Sheriff’s understated love song, “Good Old Girl”; and Miss Mona’s farewell, “The Bus from Amarillo.” Each one is superbly delivered and dramatically affecting.

Two less-known numbers come alive as they move the action and define mood.

One is “Twenty-Four Hours of Lovin’” from Jewel (Crystal Sha’nae), with a welcome throbbing blues beat in the otherwise all-white ranch. The other is the plaintive “Doatsey Mae” in the Texas Twinkle Café by the hapless, hard-working waitress (Emily Drennan). She says of Miss Mona, “At least she doesn’t work on her feet,” the script’s allowance that so-called “honest labor” can take a lot out of a girl.

Finally, loud applause for the production’s burly, deeply masculine male chorus appearing in many changes of costume. Its “Aggie Song,” with some judicious editing, would do Texas A&M University proud.

In brief: George Orwell’s 1984 is a novel more often cited than read. Perhaps 30 words from it, starting with “Big Brother” have entered everyday language.

Some people may forget that within its pages lie stories of love, betrayal and sadistic torture. The stage version by Robert Owens, Wilton E. Hall, Jr and William Miles, Jr., running through Saturday, Aug. 19, at Shoppingtown’s Central New York Playhouse, hews more closely to Orwell’s narrative than do the two movie versions, with Edmond O’Brien (1956) and John Hurt (1984).

The lead role, Winston Smith (Derek Powell), is tough to play because he begins as a phlegmatic cog at the Ministry of Truth, where he corrupts history, and cannot show emotion until later. Jackbooted Julia (Jackie Bleich) declares her love for him, even though she belongs to the Anti-Sex League. They tryst in a shabby room overseen by a colorful landlady (Binaifer Dabu). It appears that red-bearded colleague O’Brien (Jeremiah Thompson) shares their desire to resist the imposed lying. But nothing can be believed and no one can be trusted.

Written in 1963, the show is not often revived and presents a challenge to fledgling director Christopher Lupia. This production’s biggest coup is the booking of local celebrity author Bruce Coville, former head of Full Cast Audio, as the barking, authoritarian Loudspeaker. SNT

NEW FOODIE FEST WILL BE MAKIN’ THE BACON SCENE The smell of simmering bacon threatens to overpower the scent of meat cooking low and slow at nearby Dinosaur Bar-BQue on Saturday, Aug. 19, as a new event sets up in and around Clinton Square.

The Syracuse Bacon Festival, produced

by Galaxy Events, is similar in format to Taste of Syracuse, minus the $1 samples.

Vendors are required to sell at least one item that includes bacon. And a bacon-dipping station will feature crispy bacon with some unusual fixings, including Nutella, maple syrup and more.

Running Man Veteran candidate Joe Nicoletti isn’t worried about the future: He wants to be mayor for now

J

oe Nicoletti believes he can win the city of Syracuse’s coming mayoral election for two reasons: He has an incredible amount and range of experience in governance and civic administration, and his age. At 69, he notes, he is younger than Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders.

“Hey, they all wanted to be president,” he reflects. “I just want to be mayor.” At his age, he observes, he doesn’t have the future to worry about. “I’ll be the mayor for now,” he projects, “and leave this city booming for the future.”

Approaching the Sept. 12 Democratic primary, he has the Working Families Party nomination, assuring him of a line on the Nov. 7 ballot. He is also billing himself as the real progressive in the race, with a campaign slogan of “We are as strong as what the least of us has.”

His relevant experience, he maintains, included tenure on the Common Council and state Assembly and a stint as an administrator at City Hall under former Republican Mayor Roy Bernardi. He has also logged extensive mayoral campaign experience, although not, he insists, the four previous shots The Post-Standard attributes. When cited as contemplating switching parties to run as a Republican in 2000, a move state Sen. John DeFrancisco is credited with crushing, Nicoletti says it wasn’t real. He says this time will be the fourth.

What is your job description for Syracuse mayor?

I know this can be a better city. I could tell you that it is important to have a mayor who is a communicator, a consensus

builder, a cooperator, a dreamer, someone that can deal with all the contested people, someone who can take themself out of the universal equation and do it not for themself but for the people they represent. The man or woman must be compassionate. He or she must be dedicated. But also a mayor must be experienced.

A mayor must have relationships and a mayor must understand that it’s great to look to the past, but it’s more important to look to the future.

Should we metropolitanize the city and county governments?

If you’re talking about the model that’s been suggested to us, I don’t believe that model will work. And I say that respectfully. I believe that all good sharing of services doesn’t go from the top down, but rather comes from the bottom up. I’ve learned that, not only in the classrooms, but I’ve learned it through experience.

I also believe that if we’re going to talk about sharing services in a massive way, that the school district needs to be on the table. Unless we can deal with that, I don’t see us making much progress. I am one that believes that the first day in office that my conversations with the county executive will be, “How do

we work together? How do we promote the dialogue? How do we work together to come up with solutions to benefit all our people?”

I think we get too hung up with these imaginary lines that exist between the city and the county or towns and villages and the county, and we have to understand that all our actions have a reaction across the county. And to suggest that some don’t really care, but you should care because what happens in the city has an impact on the county as well as what happens in the county has an impact on the city.

Should we consolidate the city schools with those in the county?

When I was a member of the New York State Assembly, my assembly district had a city parks and recreation, a county parks and recreation, the town of Geddes parks and recreation, and I think the village of Solvay had one. To me, that was symbolic when I sat in Albany as an example, but also looking at other issues of duplication of services. For example, the competition between the IDAs (industrial development agencies) has to be eliminated because the developer wins.

To get back to the school district, what I’m suggesting is we really need to get together a group of people with no expectations, but an expectation of “How do we make it better for all our children?”

You start with a common denominator to make it better. That’s the way I operate.

I’ve built a reputation on bringing people

together, whether it was the famous Hotel Syracuse strike, whether it was among the councilors, whether it was private industry or the neighborhoods. You have to find common ground, you have to realize their differences and you have to build trust.

What should we do with Interstate 81?

I believe the road has to come down.

Right now I favor the community grid. I am waiting anxiously for the final study, which by the way took place because of people like Senator DeFrancisco, and I give him credit, and Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, who responded to their constituents across the board, who raised legitimate questions. I’m waiting for the new study to come out.

But more importantly than the new study, we have to be prepared as a city to meet this challenge. No one has an inkling of whether the community grid, or any other project, what’s the impact it’s going to have on the city. I know it.

Even when we built Clinton Square, closing Erie Boulevard, the planning that needed to be done. We had the Labor Day storm and the mayor put me in charge of opening up this city which was closed from one end to the other, what we had to do to open up the traffic. So we have to plan for this. It’s going to be a tremendous impact.

I am for the grid because I want to remove the economic and racial barriers that separate this community. If we aren’t big enough to admit that that is a racial and economic barrier to this community, then we simply lost.

Secondly, we have to use this Interstate 81 project as a community benefit. If there are 500 or 1,000 jobs, I want to make a deal with the governor and with Department of Transportation Commissioner Matt Driscoll, that they allocate so many jobs. We need jobs for people who are unemployed. I want to take people from our poorest neighborhoods and train them to work in construction on that job. Why? Because we’re giving them a job.

What needs to be developed in the center city, who should be doing it and who should be paying for it?

First of all, we need to strengthen our economy. And how do we strengthen our economy? We do it by providing community benefits and jobs for everybody. We do it by stop having lawsuits, by negotiating across the table. We do it by making peace with Onondaga County.

My reputation has been with organized labor, which I have never backed down from helping, and solving strikes, solving conflicts in neighborhoods and working with people.

I’m not the most glamorous candidate.

I’m not going to get up and promise a lot of things. But this is about electing a mayor, and when you’re a mayor, you shed your political label. I know this better than anybody. You’re not a Democrat or Republican. You’re a public servant.

You’re not a dictator. You’re not all righteous. You have to work for the people and reflect all of their views and learn to bring them together. That’s what this election is about.

Syracuse has the poorest communities of color in the country. As mayor, what could you do?

First of all, we should be ashamed of ourselves. We should be ashamed of ourselves. We count ourselves as leading in the arts and green technology, and thanks to County Executive Joanie Mahoney we are. But we have forgotten.

My dad, a very wise man who worked in a factory and helped put me through college, taught me a long time ago, “You judge your success by what the least of us have.” And that is going to be the slogan of this administration. SNT

A staple in the Salt City public service scene since the 1970s, Nicoletti was part of Mayor Lee Alexander’s administration and has written and established legislation, including term limits. This will also be his fifth time running for the hizzoner spot.

“Yeah, I’ve run four times. People can be sarcastic and make nasty comments online. I keep running, because I love this city,” Nicoletti said during an interview at his campaign headquarters on Spencer Street. “Where am I going? I’m in my 60s. I want to say I helped make Syracuse a better place for everybody.”

As Nicoletti sat in his chair, a red tie fit snugly up to the collar of his crisp, pressed white shirt, his hands had two settings: together with fingers crossed as resting position, or moving around, helping paint a picture for emphasis.

“I want this job,” he declared. “In the next two years we have to turn this city around and have the news recognize Syracuse as the fastest city of its size working its way out of poverty and crime. With this job there are a lot of tough decisions.

There are sacrifices. This isn’t about a title: It’s about lives.”

Let’s start at the beginning: You’re Syracuse born and raised.

Yup, I grew up on the North Side. My mom and dad both lived and met in the same neighborhood. They both came from big Italian families. My dad was a steel worker and union guy. He had a huge family of 13 brothers and one sister. My mother volunteered and taught church school. She was one of four.

How did your parents meet?

It’s a political story. My father’s family were Republicans. My grandmother on my mother’s side was a huge Democrat.

She was one of the people when Roosevelt or any big Democrat would come through, she’d be on the podium with my mother and . . . they’d have the roses.

Whenever Eisenhower came on television, she’d say, “No believa in this crap.

The Republican a-no good.”

My father went to North High School and my mother went to Vocational Central. He used to chase her down the street with all his brothers, and she’d call them a bunch of gangsters. Finally they reached a compromise. If the Democrats won the district, my father would have to leave her

alone. If they won, my mother would go out with him.

The story does get skewed. My father said he won. My mother said he didn’t.

She said she called the police on him and his brothers, because they were harassing people at the polling places. The two of them were inspectors in the same polling district. Go ahead five years. My father and the whole Nicoletti family were Democrats and my mother’s side of the family were still Democrats. The woman rules the household.

Which high school did you graduate from?

I graduated from Henninger High School. I also went to Salina Elementary and Grant Junior High North. I was part of the first graduating class of Henninger.

North and Eastwood high schools were combined. Of course, when we got there, the place was so overcrowded that kids were sitting out in the hallway. Great planning.

What were you involved in at Henninger?

I liked sports, but I couldn’t make the teams. I was involved in extracurricular activities, including student government.

Instead of playing hoops or being outside, I was one of the guys sitting in the auditorium watching President Kennedy’s inauguration. It was fascinating. I always questioned how and why it worked.

I’ve always been interested in politics and government. Even at a young age I was fascinated about how government worked. I remember my seventh-grade homeroom teacher Jeanette Pietrantoni.

She used to be president of the Syracuse Teachers Association. Her joke always was, “I knew you were always going into government.”

Did you ever play an instrument?

I played the trumpet for seven years. My first music teacher was Tony Pietrocola.

When he passed away, Stan Colella was my teacher. In those early years, Stagnitta Music, which was on North Salina

Street, had its own marching band. The city schools didn’t have them. The store decided to sponsor a marching band, and I was involved with organizing it with teachers. The color guard was run by a young woman named Rosemary Malouf.

We did quite well. A couple times we had a parade down North Salina, once for Lee Alexander when he was running for president of the City Council or mayor, I don’t remember. It started down by Assumption and ended at the UAW Union Hall, where my uncle was president.

That was where the (Open Hand) puppet theater used to be.

Talk about your time attending Syracuse University.

I was a sports nut and my dad used to get us on the field when Ben Schwartzwalder was coaching. As much as I loved football, I started watching this guy named Jim Boeheim playing backcourt with Dave Bing in Manley Field House with all the dirt.

I was involved with University Union and was the concert chairman. I was one of the guys that set up all the concerts and gave us the reputation of being a great party school. The first concert I saw up there was Dionne Warwick and Jay and the Americans. I went to the airport to pick up Jimi Hendrix and Peter, Paul and Mary. I met a lot of cool people like The Who and Led Zeppelin. Janis Joplin was quite the experience.

I looked into Harvard. Mike Sawyer, who was a professor of constitutional law, was friends with Dean Alan Campbell.

He was famous for having a very good relationship with the Kennedys. He asked why I was applying to Harvard. He said that Syracuse was the No. 1 school. So I stayed and got my second touch of elective politics, local campaigns.

How did you get your start in politics?

My first experience was in 1960, when I was a boy. My uncle got me to help hold a sign that read “All the way with JFK and LBJ.” We were in Clinton Square, which

was a big rally in those days, but it was nothing like now, where they’re huge. I remember going to Hotel Syracuse and President Kennedy, who was senator at the time, bent down and shook my hand.

I remember looking at him and he was so bronze and so big to me.

I started working on a few campaigns in college, and that’s how I decided I wanted to be a professional in government. When Lee Alexander ran for mayor, I worked on the campaign and was in Maxwell at that point. One day Dean Campbell and Mayor Alexander came up to me when I was attending a lecture in Maxwell Auditorium. I was offered a job. He liked the work I did on his campaign, and I started working part time.

My first job was to assist the parks commissioner with a budget. Apparently I did a good job and was moved to City Hall with Ann Michel. I split time between federal and state aid department and the mayor’s office.

What was it like working for Alexander? What about the time during his indictment?

It broke my heart like it did for many of us there. Nobody that worked in the administration was touched by this. When he pled guilty, he said nobody in his administration was involved in this. As much respect as I had for the mayor, we had our differences.

In 1977, I was walking out of City Hall when Syracuse Fire Department Chief Thomas Hanlon, who was one of the most greatest and colorful department heads, pulled me into the mayor’s office.

We walk in and he tells Alexander that I was being wasted, that he should put me on the City Council. Bob Ward was the councilor-at-large at the time and was transferred to Connecticut through General Electric. Next thing I knew I was the Democratic nominee and elected that year.

(The indictment) did make me want to be in government even more, because I saw the good and the bad. By the time of the indictment, which was in the 1980s, I was working in the administration.

However, this gave me the opportunity to do what I wanted to do: time to work on mandatory smoke detector legislation, building codes, minority business enterprise and women’s enterprise laws. I was told I was one of the leading experts in urban government. What drove me at that point was noticing the city was changing.

It was no longer 90 percent white. Even The Herald Journal praised me in an editorial, saying I recognized the changing population and the need to do things differently. I guess that would make me the first progressive in the city.

When I was the majority leader and we went into session the first of the year, I would tell the councilors to check their party affiliations, personal ambitions, animosity and prejudice at the door. That’s

how I led for 13 years. We accomplished a lot, including establishing term limits, which I was proud of. I saw that we were not opening up our diversity the way we should. We did housing court and vacant lot reforms, and we started to put an aggressive economic development program together. As time when on, it changed.

Can you explain your switching parties?

When Roy Bernardi and I ran against each other, he won after a brutal Democratic primary. One day Jim Parenti from his staff called me up and said the mayor wanted to talk to me. I went to see Bernardi and he asked if I wanted to work for the city instead of the private sector. I asked him if he had a fever. I accepted the position and went back to work. He never put pressure on me to politically affiliate during those beginning years, and I was able to run the departments.

During that time period, Bernardi gave me two or three challenges and leeway.

One was to go after my dream of changing Clinton Square. We built the skating rink. Unfortunately, at this point it needs some changing and maintenance. Secondly, he allowed me to take on the 1998 Labor Day storm and special projects.

I’ve said it: It was a mistake. I temporarily switched registrations. It took 24 hours for me to realize it was a mistake, and it took one cycle for me to change it back. That was 27 years ago. None of us are perfect. One of the things that lack in this profession is the ability for people who seek public office to think they can’t be wrong. Voters respect it when you say, yeah, I made a mistake or I tried this and it didn’t work.

Is it still important to question?

It’s never bad not to question.

Do you enjoy campaigning?

I love to campaign, especially in the poorer neighborhoods. There’s love.

There’s passion. There’s excitement.

When you’re mayor, you’re not a Republican or Democrat. You’re a public servant. Take care and reflect the views of constituents regardless of personal convictions.

I hate the politics side of it. It’s hypocritical. I wish we could remove it. We get caught up in all these stereotypes, people trying to persuade you that they’re this or that. It’s not what this job is about. I’ve worked with five mayors and have been partially in charge of the city with two of them.

What do you do to relax?

Listening to music is relaxing. I was a Woodstock kid, so I listen to that music, plus Motown, country-western, rock and hard rock. My taste is pretty eclectic. I’m also an old movie buff, dating back to the Errol Flynn days.

I enjoy reading, especially Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. There is something in it for everyone and it

teaches a lesson about humility. Lincoln knew he had to bring in all of his rivals to save the Union. He took abuse, but he was a great president.

I love working in the yard. There’s something about putting your hands into the earth and digging. I also love spending time with my family and volunteering at my church.

Any Sunday habits?

Yeah, I usually get up, walk the dog and go to church. After I talk to Father and the parishioners I’ll head over to the bakery or grab a cup of coffee up the street with the guys from church. Usually I’ll go to one of my neighbors and have coffee with them before heading over to see the grandchildren. We try to do family dinners on Sundays, but it’s difficult with campaigning.

Which church do you go to?

Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter’s. I don’t talk about it much, but I spend a lot of time helping others. My dad used to tell us you judge a person not by what they look like, not by what they talk like, but what’s in their heart. He also said you base the success of your community based on what the least of us have.

Do you think there was a better sense of community growing up compared to now?

Yes. I’d like to see us get back to respecting each other. Our diversity is a strength. Now there is divisiveness. Some people think to be a leader they have to be divisive. They have to be tough. They have to be ruthless. Leadership is not about that. If you look at all the world, religious and political history, the greatest leaders are people of gentle ways: Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Pope Francis and Abraham Lincoln.

Do you enjoy and feed off of people trying to make the city better in some effort or another?

I love the fact people want to make this

a better city. Downtown is becoming a neighborhood. Yes, it has many milennials in it. But unless we provide the services that are needed in any neighborhood, as fast as it may be growing, people will move away.

We need to have more police officers, grocery stores, parking options, safety and code enforcement. Especially with that, we need to learn from our mistakes.

It’s absentee property owners. We also need to provide quality schools, and to accomplish that involves working with the schools, state education system and state government.

Where do you like to go out to eat?

Ah! Riley’s, Attilio’s, Grimaldi’s, Francesca’s, Asti’s. I also like what’s going on at the Hotel Syracuse, the Marriott Syracuse Downtown.

Is there a meal you can’t live without?

I can’t live without an Italian dish of macaroni. I have to have it at least once a week. I can make the best sauce in the world. My mother taught us how to cook it all: braciole, meatballs, everything. Everybody was welcome on Sundays. When we’d come home from church, my mom would be frying meatballs. My friends and my father’s friends would come over.

My mother would say, “I’m sitting here making meatballs and you’re eating them meatballs faster.” We’d also make trips to Di Lauro’s or Columbus Bakery for bread.

Were you the type of family to buy a couple loaves and eat one on the way home?

(Smiles, nods head.) Sometimes we’d get three. Everybody was always welcome. That’s how I became an extrovert.
