CENTRAL NEW YORK WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! The fallout of the Flint water crisis continues in Michigan as a judge ruled this week that prosecutors have enough evidence to take a state official to trial for manslaughter. Nick Lyons was the director of the state’s health department and is accused of “failing to issue a timely alert about the outbreak” of Legionnaires’ disease. At least a dozen people died from the outbreak in Genesee County, and about a dozen more became seriously ill. Do you think Lyons should be charged with involuntary manslaughter? Graphic designer Greg Minix proudly displays his lifetime-pass coin. See the story on page 12.

CURSES, FOILED AGAIN
Patrick Gillis, 18, a senior at Highlands High School and a volunteer firefighter for the Pioneer Hose Fire Department in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, told police he “just wanted to respond to a fire” on May 21, when he was arrested for starting a blaze in a vacant duplex where he used to live. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that witnesses told investigators Gillis was seen at the home before the fire started, then returned as a firefighter to help put it out. He admitted to setting a piece of paper on fire and putting it in the microwave, then leaving. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s Office estimated damage at $150,000, and Gillis was charged with arson.
POLITICS AS USUAL
In a bid to unseat his boss, Bon Homme County, South Dakota, Deputy Sheriff Mark Maggs thrashed Sheriff Lenny Gramkow in the June 5 Republican primary by a vote of 878 to 331. So Sheriff Gramkow didn’t waste any time: Less than a minute after the polls closed, he fired Maggs, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. “As of this moment you are no longer an employee of Bon Homme County,” Maggs’ termination notice read. Maggs, a 31-year-old father of four, will not become sheriff until January, but he is confident the county commission “will stand with my family. . . and insure that my family will not be left hanging without an income or insurance,” Maggs said. “We’re going to be fine.”

As customers took pictures, Restaurant Cat, as it came to be known, stared down calmly, KTXLTV reported. But when Chili’s employees used a ladder to try to reach it, the cat climbed behind the neon chili pepper and wouldn’t come out, so they left food and water. Presumably it’s keeping the pigeons away.

Dymund Ellis, 19, was charged with stabbing and killing her roommate, Jace Trevon Ernst, 25, in North Las Vegas, Nevada, after a May 4 argument. According to North Las Vegas Police, Ellis became upset after Ernst repeatedly talked while she tried to watch a TV show, telling him to “shut up.” When he responded with an expletive, she went to the kitchen for a knife, reported Fox News. Police said Ellis had threatened Ernst with a knife about 10 times in the last couple of months, but he had been able to get the knife away from her. Ellis told an officer

Toronto police constables Vittorio Dominelli, 36, and Jamie Young, 35, had to call for backup in January during a raid on a marijuana dispensary after allegedly sampling some of the evidence. CTV News reported the officers called for help after they began hallucinating, one eventually climbing a tree. In a May 23 press release, Toronto police announced the two officers had been suspended and now face criminal charges in the incident.

OUT ON A LIMB
Comrades in arms Mike Mulligan, Michael Martin and Emma St. Claire made the mistake of leaving their burglary booty visible in their car in Nevada City, California. So on May 16, when they were stopped by a Grass Valley Police officer, the prosthetic arm officers spotted pointed the finger at them as the perpetrators of a Nevada County home burglary the previous week. On its Facebook page, the Nevada County Sheriff’s office described the limb as “the exact arm that was stolen in the burglary.” All three were booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City, Fox News reported, and the arm has been returned to a “very appreciative owner.”

As it negotiated a roundabout in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, a dump truck filled with manure lost its balance on May 21 and tipped over, spilling its load onto a Peugot 208 with the driver Jen Sorensen
inside. A witness said he “couldn’t believe anyone got out alive,” but the male driver was able to crawl through the pile of excrement and was unhurt, if stinky, Metro News reported. The car, however, “was crushed,” according to a Police Scotland spokesman.
GOVERNMENT IN ACTION
Lake Worth, Florida, residents were startled to receive a power outage alert on May 20 that also warned of a “zombie alert for residents of Lake Worth and Terminus,” a possible reference to a city in the TV show The Walking Dead, reported by the Palm Beach Post. “There are now far less than 7,380 customers involved due to extreme zombie activity,” the message continued. “We are looking into reports that the system mentioned zombies,” city communications specialist Ben Kerr said. “I want to reiterate that Lake Worth does not have any zombie activity currently and apologize for the system message.”
NAKED CAME THE STRANGER
In Huntsville, Arkansas, police responded to a call at 4 a.m. on May 21 from a homeowner who said a tattooed man was ringing his doorbell. The man left, but police identified him from the security video as Robert Conn, 31, and soon caught up with him after a motorist on nearby Huntsville Bridge reported seeing a naked man lying facedown in the road. When police arrived, they told KFSM-TV, Conn was talking to himself and acting as if being naked in public was normal. He was charged with disorderly conduct.
CASH FROM TRASH
A janitor at Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, may have hit the jackpot on April 26 when he discovered $325,000 worth of gold bars in a garbage bin. Investigators told The Korea Times they believe two men were transporting the gold, wrapped in newspapers, from Hong Kong to Japan, and threw away the stash for fear of being searched by customs agents. If the owner doesn’t make a claim in six months, the
janitor will get the gold, thanks to South Korea’s “finders-keepers” law. However, if the treasure is found to be linked to criminal activity, the janitor will not be entitled to any of it.
TAKING A HOT WIZ
Angelique Sanchez, 26, of Denver was asked to provide a urine sample for a prospective employer on May 3, so, of course, she stopped off at a 7-Eleven store in Aurora to apply the final touch: She put the urine-filled bottle in a microwave and turned it on, whereupon the sample blew up. A 7-Eleven clerk, who observed a “yellow liquid, and the smell was unquestionably urine” dripping from the microwave, confronted Sanchez, who wiped the liquid out of the microwave and onto the floor, then walked out. KUSA-TV reported that police caught up with her at a nearby clinic and issued a summons for damaged property. Medical expert Comilla Sasson guessed that Sanchez was trying to restore the sample to body temperature.
FINK FOLLICLES
Visitors to New York’s Fort Ticonderoga were in for a special treat as locks of hair from Revolutionary War general turned traitor Benedict Arnold and his first wife, Margaret, were put on display during the season’s opening weekend of May 5 and 6. Curator Matthew Keagle told the Associated Press that Arnold’s hair was recently rediscovered in the museum’s collections and had been preserved by the family. The private historical site obtained the hair in the 1950s. Saving a lock of a deceased family member’s hair was a common practice during the 1700s. Arnold helped capture Fort Ticonderoga from the British during the opening weeks of the Revolutionary War.
THE BUCKS STOP HERE
Drivers along I-70 outside of Indianapolis thought it was raining money for them May 2 as $600,000 in cash tumbled out the back doors of a Brinks truck and onto the highway, The Indianapolis Star reported. State police spokesman Sgt. John Perrine said an undetermined amount of cash has not been accounted for, as “people were jumping over fences and crawling on the ground” to pick up loose bills flying around. In a tweet, he warned: “Finding a large sum of money is no different than other property. If a brand-new car fell off a semi, would the 1st person to find it get to keep it? It belongs to someone else.”
ROLL OUT THE BARRELS
When Leroy Mason, 68, of Barton, Vermont, takes care of a problem, he doesn’t do things halfway. On April 30, as his smoke detector blared yet again, Mason aimed his 20-gauge shotgun at the cursed piece of electronics and fired twice. Unfortunately, the shots also hit the adjoining wall of an occupied apartment. Fire and EMS crews called to the scene had been before, according to a Vermont State Police news release quoted by Boston25 News, as “Mr. Mason has complained in the past about frequent false alarms, and was upset that fire crews would not relocate the detector. Mr. Mason took it upon himself to relocate the smoke detector.” When first responders relieved him of his shotgun, Mason rearmed himself with a Colt .45 handgun and demanded his shotgun back. Mason was finally subdued and charged with aggravated assault with a weapon and reckless endangerment.
SCENE OF THE CRIME REVISITED
Markiko Sonnie Lewis, 40, of Maple Heights, Ohio, was released from state prison on April 11 after serving time for robbing a Cleveland Key Bank branch in November 2015. To celebrate, he returned to the same bank on April 12 and robbed it again, according to WIOI, taking about $1,000. Lewis was indicted on May 1 with one count of bank robbery.
BELATED HAPPY ENDING
Matthew and Maria Colonna-Emanuel of Staten Island knew about the silver box partially buried near some trees in their yard for years; they thought it was a cable box. But when they decided to replace the trees, they discovered the box was a safe — and it was full of treasure. In early May, the Emanuels found thousands of dollars, along with “jewelry, diamonds, engagement rings,” said Matthew Emanuel. “It was stunning.” They also found an address, which linked them to nearby neighbors. The New York Police Department told WCBS-Channel 2 that indeed, the Emanuels’ neighbors were robbed in 2011 of a safe with items totaling about $52,000. The couple returned the safe and its contents to the crime victims, who were thrilled. “It wasn’t even a question,” said Maria Colonna-Emanuel. “It wasn’t ours.”
WEDDING CRASHER
In Devon, England, on June 30, a couple who had just exchanged vows at the
Furrough Cross Church gathered their wedding party at Tessier Gardens next door to take pictures. But a sunbathing woman who was squarely in the frame of the wedding photos refused to move from her towel. So the party just posed around her. The groom’s son approached the woman and asked her to move, but she “pretended to be asleep,” he told Metro News. Later she did move but left her belongings in the same spot. “It was bloody rude and disrespectful,” claimed Natalie Ming, a relative of the groom.
PEOPLE WITH ISSUES
Police in Loerrach, Germany, responded May 14 to complaints about a domestic disturbance after a neighbor reported a loud confrontation that had been going on for some time. But when they arrived, they found a 22-year-old man arguing with his girlfriend’s parrot, according to Metro News. The parrot had been barking like a dog, and the man became annoyed with it. No charges were filed.
DRIVE-THRU AMOUR
@BurgerKing was looking for love in all the right places on May 9 when workers changed a Boston location’s sign to
read: “@Wendys ... Prom?” and posted a picture to Twitter. United Press International reported that it took less than an hour for the red-headed fast-food heartthrob, just a few doors down, to respond: “OK, but don’t get handsy and we have to be home by 10.” In a classic love triangle, @MoonPie expressed his disappointment: “I knew I should’ve asked sooner.”
OOPS!
On May 1, as airmen of the 91st Missile Wing Security Forces traversed the gravel back roads of North Dakota between two of the nuclear missile launch sites they are charged with protecting, the back hatch of their truck fell open, allowing a 42-pound metal box of explosive grenade rounds to fall out. Despite deploying more than 100 airmen to walk the entire 6-mile route the team had driven, The Washington Post reported on May 15, the ammunition still hadn’t been found. The Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the box and alerted local farmers and oil field vendors in the area that the box could be dangerous if damaged.

CHRIS COLLINS’ INDICTMENT HIGHLIGHTS NEED TO KEEP POLS OUT OF COMPANY BOARDS
S
ome form of conflict-of-interest policy is fairly standard in a lot of workplaces. But for whatever reason, similar policies in one of the most important workplaces — government — too often seem to be either nonexistent or are littered with loopholes and backdoors.
The recent arrest of New York Republican Rep. Chris Collins helped expose one of those loopholes, and his colleagues must now do what they can to close it immediately. Collins, whose congressional district covers Western New York from the suburbs of Rochester to the suburbs of Buffalo, was indicted Aug. 8 for his alleged role in an insider trading scheme. Prosecutors accuse the congressman — a major investor and board member of the Sydney, Australian-based pharmaceutical company Innate Immunotherapeutics Ltd. — of engaging in illegal insider trading when he learned a year ago that a new drug for the treatment of multiple sclerosis had failed a clinical trial. Being a board member, he learned the information before it became public. Collins then tipped off his son, a stockholder in the company, early enough so that his son allegedly sold his stock and avoided about $571,000 in losses. His son told his fiancee and her parents, who were also stockholders in the business. Collins insists he is innocent and briefly vowed to stay on the ballot in November, but announced a few days later he would not seek re-election. His arrest has brought a crucial question to the forefront: Why are members of Congress allowed
to sit on boards of major companies while at the same time holding public office? Collins’ case is a good example of why this concept is flawed, since he held a seat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which would oversee health care companies like the one for which he was a board member. As we’ve seen in several cases in New York state politics over the last few years, companies have an obvious interest in what kind of legislation flows through the halls of power. And representatives of those companies can resort to dark tactics to get lawmakers to influence laws so that they better benefit those companies. It’s a lot easier to do that when certain legislators serve on boards of those companies and have a stake in them. Even if there is never any wrongdoing between the two parties, the image alone of straddling elected office and private investment is, at best, a conflict of interest. Collins’ arrest should be a wakeup call. Two of Collins’ congressional colleagues — Democrat Rep. Kathleen Rice from New York City and Republican Rep. Tom Reed from the Southern Tier — are attacking this problem. They introduced legislation the day after Collins’ arrest
that would enact House rules similar to what the U.S. Senate rulebook already contains, which prohibits senators from serving “as an officer or member of the board of any publicly held or publicly regulated corporation, financial institution, or business entity.” We can’t rely a lot on Congress these days to find bipartisan agreement. Yet since members from both sides of the aisle were quick to condemn Collins after his indictment, they should also quickly agree that Reed and Rice’s bill would help prevent such activity and pass it as soon as possible. The need for urgency is not difficult to understand. If Collins’ case raises the question of why should members of Congress be allowed to sit on boards of major companies, it raises another question: Who do our members of Congress work for: their constituents or their self-interests? As long as giant corporations and big donors play such a significant role in our politics, there will always be some doubt over who our public servants are really put in office to serve. But banning House members from serving on company boards might at least make an answer to that question a bit clearer. SNT

EXIT STRATEGIES AT TECH GARDEN SHOW
T
he new exhibit at the Tech Garden’s downtown gallery has a diverse roster of artists, considerable flexibility and a provocative title: The End of the World. There certainly are works dealing with end times in one form or another, but the display also presents acrylics depicting street scenes, a photo portraying industrial labor, and several pieces paying homage to vintage signs. The overall blend works nicely. First, the show features art dealing with the Cold War era. Curator Steve Nyland brought in artifacts documenting that era: a sign for a fallout shelter and a second sign listing maximum capacity for a shelter area. Tim Riker’s watercolor touches on the specter of nuclear war, as it depicts a mushroom cloud just above a city. There are also radically different pieces. Avery Harris, in a mixed-media work, interprets the proposition that cockroaches will survive any disaster. A text states that “when we are no more our spirit will live in the bodies of roaches.” “The End of the F.$#ing World” by Christopher Mooney has an absurdist flavor. It shows a rat riding a skateboard, arms reaching out from a sewer grate to throw a bomb, and a woman firing an advanced weapon. Evan Hunter reflects on threats to the environment. Her charcoal and graphite works range from “We All Live Downstream” to “Homeless Wildlife” and “Petrified Forest,” with its vision of creatures killed off. The exhibition follows other directions as well. It displays Laura Canfield’s image of a statue that appears to honor the Virgin Mary, Antonio Massa’s documentation of a factory by focusing on one worker, and an image of a man sitting alone created by Dalgis Viera Alarcon. The exhibit also displays acrylics by Sanlly Viera and Richell Castellon Ferreira. Viera depicts a small child in “Hope,” while a second work portrays both the Statue of Liberty and the Declaration of Independence. City streets are a focus for Ferreira, who plays with light and a sense of proportion. “From the Deep” demonstrates his ability to transform an everyday scene.
Home Nature ? IS
The show also encompasses “Life,” a digital image by Erin Davies; “Rocket Chalk,” another of Jamie Ashlaw’s works referencing signs from decades ago; and Barbara Conte-Gaugel’s oil, “The Three Sisters, Oregon.” Like many Tech Garden exhibitions, The End of the World hangs works with a science-fiction sensibility. Danny Glover’s “Waiter” depicts a subject who wears a bowtie and resembles the monster from the 1954 film Creature from the Black Lagoon. In the acrylic “Cybernaut,” Jessica Creel portrays a fearsome creature. Look for Christophe Ennis’ bold and imaginative oil, “After the Fall.” It features a figure with a reptile’s head, some human features, and an alien baby. Finally, fantasy art and media reports converge in regard to a noxious plant, the giant hogweed. Curator Nyland has several pieces in the show that envision the hogweed as a dire threat to humanity; one of them is “The Final Onslaught of the Giant Hogweed.” Moreover, several news articles have discussed this summer’s spread of the plant in upstate New York and other parts of the Northeast, noting that hogweed’s sap damages skin and eyes. The End of the World is expansive rather than narrow; it doesn’t exclude works that have nothing to do with the potential end of our planet. Beyond that, the show, which runs through Sept. 21, provides exposure for a slew of local artists, making it definitely worth a visit to the Tech Garden, 235 Harrison St. The gallery is open Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information, contact (315) 474-0910 or gallery.ttg@gmail.com. STAGE
By James MacKillop Skater daters: Cast members of Hangar Theatre’s Xanadu. Rachel Philipson photo
FROM ROLLER BOOGIES TO DIVORCEE DETECTIVES The time of roller disco, legwarmers, rainbows and unicorns may not have lasted long, but it continues to be celebrated in popular culture as if it were the Regency era. Consider the afterlife of legendary movie flop Xanadu (1980), a monument to that fleeting moment. The musical fantasy with Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly was so reviled in its day that its reception prompted the creation of the dystopic Oscars known as the Golden Raspberry Awards or Razzies, which it “won” for best director (Robert Greenwald). The reception of the soundtrack album, however, was entirely different. Teeny-boppers of the day swooned over it. That’s how cults are made. Thirty-eight years later, those kids are grown and they buy tickets to musical shows like the stage adaptation of Xanadu, which closes the summer season at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre with productions running through Sept. 1. Against even his own better judgment, comic playwright Douglas Carter Beane rescued Xanadu in 2007, retaining many of the original Jeff Lynne-John Farrar songs like “I’m Alive,” “Magic, ”Suddenly” and “Dancin’,” as well as several
8
numbers from the Electric Light Orchestra, “Strange Magic” and “Evil Woman.” Beane has had a taste for camp, such as the script for the 1995 Patrick Swayze movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar as well as upmarket wit like The Little Dog Laughed. His Xanadu adaptation, which includes parody references to the film and the 1981 special-effects fantasy flick Clash of the Titans, ran for 500 performances on Broadway but has been little seen in these parts. Chalk artist Sonny Malone (Adante Carter) is putting the finishing touches on his mural of the Greek Muses (one blonde being much out of place) on California’s Venice Beach. Suddenly, the figures in the mural come alive and that blonde, the youngest of the muses, Clio (Diana Huey), cheers Sonny on. Although an Olympian, she’s folksy and approachable: “Call me Kira.” She speaks with an Australian accent (a nod to the movie’s Newton-John) and wants to help build a roller disco to be called Xanadu. In 90 minutes with no intermission the show spins out a shape-shifting, time-traveling plot too swirling to be retold. Strange to say, it derives from the

1947 Rita Hayworth movie vehicle titled Down to Earth, an aspect that put off some critics of the 1980 film. Most players have multiple identities, sometimes crossing gender with and without costume changes. Clio’s oldest sister, Melpomene (excellent, dark-browed Desiree Rodriguez), also appears as Hera, wife of Zeus, the male god Hermes, and an Andrews Sister in a World War II outfit. In a mostly talking scene, the street artist meets cold-hearted businessman Danny (Graham Stevens, who also plays Zeus) about turning over an abandoned theater in the Fairfax district for the roller disco, possibly raising local real estate values. But he softens when he remembers his lost love Kitty (Diana Huey, yet again), and gives in. Widely celebrated director-choreographer Devanand Janki fully captures the evanescent and intoxicating tone. It’s tough to resist when the band gets up to join the dancing and keyboard player Emani Barber turns into a centaur. Meanwhile, Cortland Repertory Theatre continues its summer with the company’s annual female-centered comedy. Last year it was an obscurity, Katherine DiSalvino’s Nana’s Naughty Knickers.
This year’s choice, Women in Jeopardy! (through Saturday, Aug. 25), comes with stronger credentials, its premiere having been a surprise hit at Rochester’s GeVa Theatre just three years ago. Better yet, its playwright is Wendy MacLeod, a darling of off-Broadway for shows like The House of Yes (1990, later a Parker Posey movie), about a woman who thinks she’s Jackie Kennedy. What she has done here is both edgier and funnier. Action begins when two plainly dressed, 40ish divorcées, the taller, talkative Jo (Stefanie Londino) and the shorter Mary (Charlie Jhaye) retreat to a stylish kitchen to fret about Liz (Rebecca Mason-Wygal), a friend they have left in an off-stage room. Liz has brought around her dodgy new boyfriend Jackson (Nicholas Wilder), a dentist who says he’s “in need of company.” They also reflect that the news has reported on a missing dental hygienist. Hmmmm, didn’t that missing woman also work for Jackson, the man with Liz in the next room? Splendidly creepy, Wilder’s pale dentist projects a nervous but somehow threatening countenance. His few words are

chock-full of offenses, including a tasteless crack about the missing hygienist. What could Liz, who is more glamorous than Jo or Mary, possibly see in what looks like a dating service reject? Worse, even without knowing anything about Jackson, Liz has already OKed his camping venture with her temptress daughter Amanda (Amanda Walker), with her tumbling golden locks, tight jeans and exposed navel. Following the lead of Lucy and Ethel, Mary and Jo seek solutions through two different men. One is a uniformed officer named Kirk (Nicholas Wilder, again), who does indeed look very much like the dismal dentist, but with a more reassuring manner and a penchant for lively dance steps. Curiously in this women’s comedy, MacLeod has generously assigned the most fun to the guy in this double role. There’s also Amanda’s hunkish ex-boyfriend Trenner (Ethan Rich), a snowboarder who might not have been a top
student, who agrees to go to the campsite and defend Amanda should she be under assault. He also agrees to go to Mary’s kitchen, where he displays an unexpected lust for older women, although director Kathryn Markey and costume designer Orli Nativ have not made Mary look anything like a cougar. While Trenner is panting deeply for Mary, Liz and Amanda show up, forcing the horny boy to hide in a pantry without a door. It’s a spoof of one of the most-often repeated scenes from French bedroom farce and also a deconstruction. It is also the key to what Women in Jeopardy! is about. MacLeod, with her Yale degree and lofty writer-in-residence gig at Oberlin College, has succeeded in writing a really superior sitcom. Finding love is an irrelevance, as all our attention goes to two middle-aged resourceful babes. SNT

MOVIES AND MOVIEMAKERS MERGE AT EVERSON On Friday, Aug. 31, the Urban Video Project kicks off its fall season with Urban Cinematheque, an outdoor film and culture festival at the Everson Museum of Art Plaza, 401 Harrison St. The evening begins at 7 p.m. with immersion into Syracuse’s cultural scene: Tables will be staffed by organizations including UVP and its parent group, Light Work; the Everson; Spark; Symphoria; and Likeminded, a consortium of youth focusing on art and community engagement. Food trucks from Byblos and Frank’s Franks will also be on site. Then at 8 p.m. there will be a free screening of the blockbuster Marvel Comics superhero movie Black Panther, projected on the museum’s façade. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as T’challa, who returns to the futuristic African kingdom of Wakanda to assume the throne and lead the people. The kingdom is steeped in both mythology and advanced technology. For UVP, it’s also an opportunity to promote its core programming: exposure for experimental artists creating films or videos. Starting Sept. 13, several short movies by Christopher Harris will be projected on the Everson’s façade from dusk to 11 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. In the course of his career, Harris has created varied films. Distant Shores (2016) portrays a sunny afternoon on a tour boat near Chicago, with the ride haunted by the specter of images from other voyages; one of them is slave ships sailing across the Atlantic. Speaking in Tongues, inspired by Ishmael Reed’s novel Mumbo Jumbo, is slated for release later this year. On Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. UVP will offer Harris’ 60-minute feature still/here, a
meditation on neighborhoods located on the north side of St. Louis, the filmmaker’s hometown. The film will be presented inside the Everson, followed by a question-answer session with Harris. The film is in no way a traditional documentary. Instead, Harris’ camera heads down deserted streets, by vacant lots and into decrepit buildings. At a movie theater closed long ago, the marquee is full of holes. There are no snippets from interviews. The soundtrack consists of footsteps, a constantly ringing phone, voiceover commentary, and found audio such as a recorded message for the St. Louis public-housing authority. The film conveys a sense of loss and survival; it depicts neighborhoods where people still live. “His work is about time and memory,” said Anneka Herre, UVP’s coordinator. “How legacies of the past play out in the present and influence the future.” She noted that the combination of a film screening and the opportunity to talk to the artist is an essential element of UVP’s programming. After Harris’ films finish their run on Oct. 27, UVP will move on to Best Laid Plans, a series of videos exploring urban changes. That series opens Nov. 8. The events scheduled for this fall fit in with UVP’s longtime mission: presenting films and videos that are free; available at a downtown venue, the Everson Museum; and feature artists whose work usually isn’t available elsewhere in Syracuse. Urban Video Project, a program of Light Work, has partnerships with Onondaga County, the Everson and Spectrum Cable. SNT

Fair THEE WELL What’s new at this year’s New York State Fair BY BILL DELAPP
The folks at the New York State Fair really want you to attend the New York State Fair. To entice true-blue fair fans, the state even offered 200 lifetime-pass coins (featured on this week’s cover) for $200 last May, and they sold out within minutes. That successful gambit was part of several new ideas that have been presented over recent months leading up to 2018’s 13-day fair run, from Wednesday, Aug. 22, through Monday, Sept. 3. This year’s main attraction, however, is inescapable and overpowering with its sheer physical size. Looming like the Monolith in the 1968 science-fiction movie epic 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Exposition Center on the fair’s west end is slated to open Wednesday, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo leading the big reveal. Construction workers have been toiling feverishly to get the job completed in time, even during the Syracuse Nationals car show held in July. The structure tops 90 feet high at its peak, so it’s impossible to miss. Even a nearby Ferris wheel trucked in from Wade Shows (again in charge of the midway rides) somehow looks teensier in comparison. Part of the venue’s 110,000 square feet of space will be filled with an ice-skating rink during the fair. Open skating will be available, with 600 pairs of free skate rentals for would-be Hans Brinkers. There will also be a two-day broomball showdown with teams from as far away as North Carolina and Ohio, a two-day curling tournament, a youth speed-skating contest, a wedding on ice and even a silent disco event. Elsewhere in the complex will be the annual sand sculpture exhibit. The ongoing artwork has been relocated from its longtime home inside the Center of Progress Building. Nearby will be an interactive
12

exhibit that celebrates the four seasons of New York state. Another physical structure that will be hard to ignore is the 90-foot-high observation tower, which will be free to enjoy. Wade Shows has also brought in the country’s first- and third-largest traveling roller coasters, including the return of the Wild Mouse, an attraction steeped in legend and mystery. Physical changes are also being made to long-established favorites. The West End Sports Deck watering hole is now history, to be replaced by a tent within the Restaurant Row section. (Interestingly, West End’s neighboring Alivero’s food stand is still standing.) The longtime Ox Roast eatery has also relocated to a smaller venue near the Twin Trees pizza booth. Meanwhile, Hilby the Skinny German Juggling Boy had no objections to his new location. Uprooted last year from his former residence near Chevy Court (where he would dish out snarky one-liners about the stage act) to a seated outside area near the Coliseum, the juggler said that he no longer has to compete with noises from Chevy Court, plus the bleachers audience has a better view instead of standing around in a circle. Whenever the bleachers section is hosting boxing or basketball contests, Hilby will move his show to the front of the State Lottery exhibit near the Coliseum. Beyond the changes, favorite standbys will still revisit the fair. Hawk Creek Wildlife Center, from East Aurora, returns with its popular “Birds of Prey” show featuring raptors at the New York State Park. The Dairy Bar will be back for 25-cent cups of white and chocolate milk. And the Potato Booth, site of many sellouts last year, will continue slinging those starchy spuds.
The New York State Fair’s 2017 theme was “Find Your Great,” while this year’s mantra is “Find Your Thrill.” Considering all those loop-the-loop, dipsy-doodle rides from Wade Shows, maybe the 2019 theme will be “Find Your Missing Car Keys.” SNT Above, Wade Shows workers put together one of the midway rides; below, the observation tower, which climbs 90 feet high. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19) The two pieces of
advice I have for you may initially seem contradictory, but they are in fact complementary. Together they’ll help guide you through the next three weeks. The first comes from herbalist and wise woman Susun Weed. She suggests that when you face a dilemma, you should ask yourself how you can make it your ally and how you can learn the lesson it has for you. Your second burst of wisdom is from writer Yasmin Mogahed: “Study the hurtful patterns of your life. Then don’t repeat them.”
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Speak the follow-
ing declaration aloud and see how it feels: “I want strong soft kisses and tender unruly kisses and secret truth kisses and surprise elixir kisses. I deserve them, too.” If that puts you in a brave mood, Taurus, add a further affirmation: “I want ingenious affectionate amazements and deep dark appreciation and brisk mirthful lessons and crazy sweet cuddle wrestles. I deserve them, too.” What do you think? Do these formulas work for you? Do they put you in the proper frame of mind to co-create transformative intimacy? I hope so. You’re entering a phase when you have maximum power to enchant and to be enchanted.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) As you map out
your master plan for the next 14 months, I invite you to include the following considerations: an intention to purge pretend feelings and artificial motivations; a promise to change your relationship with old secrets so that they no longer impinge on your room to maneuver; a pledge to explore evocative mysteries that will enhance your courage; a vow to be kinder toward aspects of yourself that you haven’t loved well enough; and a search for an additional source of stability that will inspire you to seek more freedom.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) If you have been
communing with my horoscopes for a while, you’ve gotten a decent education -- for free! Nonetheless, you shouldn’t depend on me for all of your learning needs. Due to my tendency to emphasize the best in you and focus on healing your wounds, I may neglect some aspects of your training. With that as caveat, I’ll offer a few meditations about future possibilities. 1. What new subjects or skills do you want to master in the next three years? 2. What’s the single most important thing you can do to augment your intelligence? 3. Are there dogmas you believe in so fixedly and rely on so heavily that they obstruct the arrival of fresh ideas? If so, are you willing to at least temporarily set them aside?
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) “All the world’s a stage,”
wrote Shakespeare, “And all the men and women merely players.” In other words, we’re all performers. Whenever we emerge from solitude and encounter other people, we choose to express certain aspects of our inner experience even as we hide others. Our personalities are facades that display a colorful mix of authenticity and fantasy. Many wise people over the centuries have deprecated this central aspect of human behavior as superficial and dishonest. But author Neil Gaiman thinks otherwise: “We are all wearing masks,” he says. “That is what makes us interesting.” Invoking his view -- and in accordance with current astrological omens -- I urge you to celebrate your masks and disguises in the coming weeks. Enjoy the show you present. Dare to entertain your audiences.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) I think you’ve done enough rehearsals. At this point, the apparent quest for a little extra readiness is beginning to lapse into procrastination. So I’ll suggest that you set a date for opening night. I’ll nudge you to have a cordial talk with yourself about the value of emphasizing soulfulness over perfectionism. What? You say you’re waiting until your heart stops fluttering and your bones stop chattering? I’ve got good news: The greater your stage fright, the more moving your performance will be.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) In all the time we’ve
worked on diminishing your suffering, we may have not focused enough on the fine art of resolving unfinished business. So let’s do that now, just in time for the arrival of your Season of Completion. Are you ready to start drawing the old cycle to a close so you’ll be fresh when the new cycle begins? Are you in the mood to conclude this chapter of your life story and earn the relaxing hiatus you will need before launching the next chapter? Even if you don’t feel ready, even if you’re not in the mood, I suggest you do the work anyway. Any business you leave unfinished now will only return to haunt you later. So don’t leave any business unfinished!
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Are you ready to
mix more business with pleasure and more pleasure with business than you have ever mixed? I predict that in the coming weeks, your social opportunities will serve your professional ambitions and your professional ambitions will serve your social opportunities. You will have more than your usual amount of power to forge new alliances and expand your web of connections. Here’s my advice: Be extra-charming, but not grossly opportunistic. Sell yourself, but with grace and integrity, not with obsequiousness. Express yourself like a gorgeous force of nature, and encourage others to express themselves like gorgeous forces of nature.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “When I
picture a perfect reader,” wrote philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “I picture a monster of courage and curiosity, also something supple, cunning, cautious, a born adventurer and discoverer.” I suspect he was using the term “monster” with a roguish affection. I am certainly doing that as I direct these same words toward you, dear Sagittarian reader. Of course, I am always appreciative of your courage, curiosity, cunning, suppleness, and adventurousness. But I’m especially excited about those qualities now, because the coming weeks will be a time when they will be both most necessary and most available to you.

yet have access to maps of the places where you need to go next. That fact may tempt you to turn around and head back to familiar territory. But I hope you’ll press forward even without the maps. Out there in the frontier, adventures await you that will prepare you well for the rest of your long life. And being without maps, at least in the early going, may actually enhance your learning opportunities. Here’s another thing you should know: Your intuitive navigational sense will keep improving the farther you get from recognizable landmarks.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Healing isn’t
impossible. You may not be stuck with your pain forever. The crookedness in your soul and the twist in your heart may not always define who you are. There may come a time when you’ll no longer be plagued by obsessive thoughts that keep returning you to the tormenting memories. But if you hope to find the kind of liberation I’m describing here, I advise you to start with these two guidelines: 1. The healing may not happen the way you think it should or imagine it will. 2. The best way to sprout the seeds that will ultimately bloom with the cures is to tell the complete truth.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Nineteenth-cen-
tury British painter J. M.W. Turner was one of the greats. Renowned for his luminous landscapes, he specialized in depicting the power of nature and the atmospheric drama of light and color. Modern poet Mary Ruefle tells us that although he “painted his own sea monsters,” he engaged assistants “to do small animals.” She writes that “he could do a great sky, but not rabbits.” I’m hoping that unlike Turner, you Piscean folks will go both ways in the coming weeks. Give as much of your creative potency and loving intelligence to the modest details as to the sweeping vistas.
