Customs officials in Abdali, Kuwait, apprehended a pigeon in May with 178 ketamine pills inside a fabric pocket attached to its back.

Are cute vegetables easier to swallow?

A Chinese company has developed fruit and vegetable molds that form growing foods into little Buddhas, hearts, stars and skulls. Farmers afix the plastic molds over the stems of growing plants, and the fruit fills the mold as it grows. Some designs include words, and the company also offers custom molds.

Hung Jury

Richard Patterson, 65, is the most recent defendant to choose, as a trial strategy, to show the jury his penis. A Broward County, Fla., court was trying him in the choking death of his girlfriend. Patterson called the death accidental, as it occurred during oral sex, and there was conflicting medical opinion on whether that could have proved fatal. Patterson’s lawyer said his standby position was to show a mold of the penis, but insisted that a live demonstration would be more effective.

The judge disallowed the showing, but in May the jury found Patterson not guilty anyway.

Pay It Forward

In rare cases, a mother has given birth for the principal purpose of “harvesting” a baby’s cells, ultimately to benefit another family member with a condition or illness that the cells would aid. However, Keri Young of Oklahoma gave birth in April for a different purpose. After learning while pregnant that her baby would not long survive after birth because of anencephaly, she nonetheless carried it to term — just to harvest organs for unspecified people who might need them, although the grieving Keri and husband Royce admit that some might judge their motive harshly.

In some parts of traditional Japanese society, it remains not uncommon for someone to feel the need to “rent friends.”

A frustrated victim of bedbugs in Augusta, Maine, reacted to city inaction by bringing a cup of bedbugs to a municipal office building and slamming it down on the counter, scattering about 100 insects and forcing the closure of several offices as officials scrambled to contain them.

The apartment dweller had requested help finding other housing, but city officials told him he didn’t qualify.

Baggy blue jeans were the ill-fated getaway vehicle for 15 quart-size bottles of Pennzoil motor oil and 30 DVDs of Treasure Hunt in a badly planned theft in Lakeland, Fla., in June. William Jason Hall, 38, stuffed the loot into his pants inside a 7-Eleven store without realizing that a detective in an unmarked police car outside was watching him. Legal Brief

American “sovereigns” litter courtrooms with their self-indulgent misreadings of history and the Constitution — misreadings that, coincidentally, happen to favor them with free passes on arrests and taxpaying. But now, the United Kingdom’s Exeter Crown Court has experienced Mark Angell, 41, who said in May that he simply could not step into the courtroom dock to state a plea concerning possession of cannabis because he would thus be “submitting” to “maritime law,” which he could not legally do on dry land.

Judge: “Don’t talk nonsense. Get in the dock.” Angell was ordered to trial. Before leaving, he gave the judge a bill for his detention: the equivalent of $2.5 million.

French fashion label Y/Project, in an apparent response to the eternal question, “Do these jeans make my butt look big?,” is selling buttless jeans. The waistband attaches to the legs of the jeans with a series of clasps and straps, so the pant legs hang loose on the wearer. The Detachable Button Down pants are priced at $570.

Hog Wild Tourists and father-son duos looking for out-of-this-world bonding experiences are paying up to $50,000 for the opportunity to “hunt” feral hogs from helicopters in Texas, sometimes using machine guns.

“There’s only so many places in the world you can shoot machine guns out of a helicopter and no one shoots back,” said HeliBacon company co-owner Chris Britt.

Texas passed the “pork-chopper” bill in 2011 allowing aerial hunting of feral hogs, and in May, legislators approved hunting from hot-air balloons, which are quieter and give hunters a steadier shot.

Novocain Not Necessary Enterprising mother Jeannine Isom in Cedar Hills, Utah, took her 7-year-old son’s dental care into her own hands in June when she purchased hand sanitizer and needle-nose pliers at Walmart, then ushered her son into the store’s restroom and pulled out two of his teeth. Police were alerted after the boy’s older brother heard him screaming. The mother was charged with felony child abuse.

Compelling Explanation

College student Lydia Marie Cormaney almost made it out of a Gillette, Wyo., Walmart with more than $2,000 worth of merchandise without paying for it.

When police arrived, she was ready with a reason: She was doing research about kleptomania, which also explained the stockpile of stolen items in her dorm room. However, as she was enrolled in only a biology class at Gillette College, it was unclear what she planned to do with the results of her study.

Ewwwww!

The Happiest Place on Earth was a little less joyful for 17 visitors in June, when a hazardous materials team was dispatched to Main Street at Disneyland after park-goers reported being struck by feces. Experts quickly realized that rather than being victims of a bathroom bomber, the park guests had been regrettably positioned beneath a flock of geese flying overhead. The victims were ushered to a private restroom to clean up and were provided with fresh clothing.

Marty Masterpole, Joe Nicoletti and Juanita Perez-Williams equally showcased the talents, experiences and personalities that make each of them qualified to be Stephanie Miner’s successor. Masterpole touted his lifelong familiarity and career within the city. Nicoletti emphasized his experience in several types of government, including the New York state Assembly, and the relationships he has developed through that experience. And Perez-Williams made clear her passion for serious changes in how the city government operates.

The candidates were respectful and honest and provided specifics about their individual legislative agendas, mainly avoiding hollow talking points, talking over each other or ridiculous personal attacks on one another.

It was a far cry from last fall’s debates of the presidential candidates and in many congressional contests around the country, including the one in Central New York.

The entire conversation, hosted by Spectrum News and the Syracuse Post-Standard, didn’t revolve around one-liner “zingers” or how the candidates looked, sounded or responded to what the other was saying.

They all respected “the lightning round,” in which the moderators asked a series of questions in which the candidates were required to answer with a simple “yes” or “no.” We live in an age where so many people are sick of dishonest politicians or politicians who feed us colorful statements and spin questions about controversial subjects. The candidates’ consistent candor was incredibly heartening.

Most importantly, the debate fulfilled the most basic purpose of why we have debates in this country. The candidates talked about the actual issues that matter.

Imagine that.

But it’s not just that they talked about actual issues. They addressed concrete concerns that are on the minds of many residents in the city of Syracuse and the immediate vicinity.

Too many times in recent years, local elections — both here and elsewhere — have been nationalized, especially during years in which the presidency is being determined. The critical problems in individual cities, counties and congressional districts have too often taken a backseat to the politics at the top of the ticket

and what the national media outlets are talking about.

The era of Donald Trump has only amplified that. Rep. John Katko was frequently bombarded with questions regarding the Republican Party’s standard bearer in 2016’s race for New York’s 24th Congressional District. And his opponent, Colleen Deacon, focused too much of her campaign on Trump and Katko’s responses to him, a tactic that definitely contributed to her defeat.

And we’ve already seen a whiff of that from Katko’s potential future opponent, Mayor Miner herself. She criticized Katko regarding the GOP health care bill and challenged him to a debate on the subject earlier this summer.

But Donald Trump is not running for Congress. And he is not running for mayor of Syracuse. There are enough issues in this community that a mayor needs to worry about. Not that national issues don’t affect the Syracuse area, but what the White House is doing should not center on the mayor’s office.

Thankfully, Masterpole, Nicoletti and Perez-Williams gave compelling and detailed thoughts regarding some of Syracuse’s most dire issues, such as economic development, the high poverty rate, crime involving our youth, consolidation of government and shared services, the I-81 reconstruction project, mayoral takeover

of the city’s schools and the city’s status as a sanctuary city.

All three candidates support the community grid option for I-81’s future, support continuation of a sanctuary city status and don’t believe a gondola should be built at the New York State Fair.

We’re lucky to have candidates who not only recognize the importance of the mayor’s office and how crucial the role is when it comes to the city’s burning issues, but candidates who can also have a calm and civilized conversation about those issues with others who have different viewpoints and seek the same office. And that includes independent candidate Ben Walsh, Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins, Libertarian candidate Chris Fowler and Republican Laura Lavine.

So whenever we think government by its very nature has become nothing but a match of political ping pong, it would be good for us to take another look at our local representatives. They might surprise us.

It might also be good for our representatives in Washington, D.C., and Albany to take a look at local politicians once in a while, including those who want to be mayor of Syracuse, to help remind them just why it is we sent them there. They may learn something. SNT

How’s this for irony?

In 1940, a 12-year-old Jewish boy and his parents flee Nazi Germany to start a new life in the United States.

Seventy-seven years later, his son applies for dual citizenship with Germany, so he’ll have somewhere to go if he has to flee Nazis in the United States. Crazy stuff, but crazy is what you get when you install a criminal psychotic into the most important job on the planet.

By now you’ve no doubt figured out who the applicant for German citizenship is. Ist ich!

And, no, this isn’t another of my larks. I’ve already contacted the German consulate in Boston. I’m not worried. The Syracuse football team has a better chance of defeating Clemson than I do of having my petition for German citizenship denied.

A German repatriation law for Jews who fled Hitler — and their direct descendants — makes me a virtual Jew-in. Same for the wife and kids. Mein papers are in order. Sieg Heil that, baby.

The back story: If history had been allowed to meander on its natural course minus the intrusion of Hitler, my late father, Kurt, would have come of age as a German. Most likely, he would have inherited his father’s successful furniture store in Karlsruhe, Germany, which, in turn, would have been inherited by his progeny.

Let me spell it out for you. If not for the Nazis, the person who would have been me — my father’s firstborn child — would likely be the furniture king of southwestern Germany, the Dunkel & Brightwurst of Baden-Württemberg, if you will.

Things turned out differently. Thanks to a brave Catholic relative who scouted ahead for Gestapo, Kurt and his parents, Arthur and Johanna, escaped Germany and Austria by train and made their way to Chicago, missing out on that whole Final Solution thing.

Historical note: The Final Solution had two sides: the Undesirables (Jews, homosexuals, Gypsies, Roman Catholics, the disabled, the mentally ill) and “some very fine” Nazis who were goaded into operating the gas chambers.

How fortunate my dad and his parents were to get out with their lives. Theirs is a story of courage, hope, luck and the indomitable human spirit.

The only downside is that instead of becoming a German furniture magnate, I’m now a bitter, misunderstood white man writing for pocket change. Talk about marginalized. Even the Nazis don’t want anything to do with me.

So, Germany is looking more and more like a real possibility. I like it there. I lived in Cologne for three months in 1984 as a foreign exchange student.

Almost everyone spoke English even then, which was helpful because the only German I knew upon arriving was the Chicken Dance.

I lived with a lovely German family, the Fischers. They were so suspicious of authority, even their own, that they felt compelled to explain why their young son, Bjorn, was so mouthy. “We don’t discourage our children from talking back because we want them to learn to stand up to authority,” Mr. Fischer told me. My kind of place.

A few years ago I returned to Germany, this time to Berlin, where I learned an important lesson: Absinthe is a powerful intoxicant and demands a stronger presence in this country.

Also, I got to see the future of Donald Trump’s border wall. The infamous Berlin Wall, which once cruelly cleaved the city, now consists of a few slabs for tourists.

This won’t be easy for me. I realize that some aspects of life in the United States cannot be duplicated, like Buffalo wings and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell lying through his teeth. I’d miss that, but this is no time to get sentimental. I’m gonna get me some German passport, one that doesn’t have a red letter “J” stamped on it like the Nazi-issued Reisepass that my grandfather and father had to carry.

I can’t help but wonder if this was all meant to be. Arthur, my grandfather, was awarded the Iron Cross for bravery in World War I for stringing telegraph wire over a live battlefield. That didn’t help him 23 years later when he was rounded up at Kristallnacht and interned for weeks for the crime of being Jewish.

Once in Chicago, he sold stationery door-to-door, but the tug of the Vaterland remained strong. Despite the horrors he experienced there, he returned to Germany in the 1970s to live out his final years.

Will the same tug pull me in? Do they even make lederhosen in my size?

I’ll keep you posted as the application process unfolds. Rest assured that I will continue to file humor columns for the Syracuse New Times even if I’m forced by totalitarian terror to relocate to Germany. That’s where we are, folks. Time to practice my Chicken Dance. SNT

HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL AT LIVERPOOL CAFE

T

he Hope Café Coffee and Tea House in Liverpool has been steadily percolating toward its Aug. 18 opening for a couple months now. In an area with plenty of options for food and drink, it offers something different, including coffee, tea and food with a Peruvian and Italian flavor.

The café is a lounge, gathering place and funding stream for The People Project, a nonprofit based in Central New York. The ministry-based organization is dedicated to outreach and offering hope to people locally and around the world.

In countries like Peru and Kenya, the organization has built churches, schools, orphanages and soup kitchens. In Syracuse, the organization has operated Hope4Cuse, a center offering life improvement services to members of the community.

Leaders in The People Project and the café endeavor are Robert Strickland and Matthew Cullipher and his wife, Mary, with assistance from volunteers. Mary is a

native of Peru who helped her parents operate a food cart in Lima. The café opened early Friday morning and stayed open late to host its first weekly open mike night.

Hope Café Coffee and Tea House offers an eclectic mix of coffee, tea and food from other places, with a touch of American flavor, too. If you like espresso, try esencia de café, a smooth, stovetop style of coffee popular in Peru. Hope’s espresso drinks, like lattes and mochas, are made with esencia de café. Pour-over coffee is available.

Also on the beverage menu is emoliente, an herbal tea that Cullipher says is sold by street vendors in Peru. At its base is

toasted barley, flax seeds and a “proprietary blend” of herbs, which are steeped in boiling water.

Emoliente can be sweetened with honey, sugar or Stevia, flavored with lemon and other ingredients and enjoyed hot or cold. The beverage is believed to aid digestion and have other soothing, healing properties. Other teas on the menu include loose-leaf teas and a “Flu Shot Tea’’ made with honey, ginger and turmeric.

Hungry? Indulge in some baked empanadas, crispy turnovers filled with your choice of carne molida (ground beef), aji de gallina (creamy chicken with onion and chili peppers) or more familiar choices like pulled pork and Buffalo wing-style chicken. Homemade sauces are served on the side.

Also on the menu is a selection of paninis and arepas, a traditional dish of Latin America and South America. Arepas are maize-based patties, cooked on a griddle. Hope Café’s arepas are available with ham, egg and cheese, Buffalo-style chicken or pulled pork.

Sweet temptations include homemade blondies and s’mores bars. Belgian liege waffles are made from a yeast-risen dough and contain pearl sugar, which makes the waffles crisp up and caramelize as they cook, Cullipher says. They’re served with powdered sugar on top and with your choice of whipped cream, berries or Nutella (optional).

The venue has WiFi, books and seating for about 40 at tables and comfy sofas and chairs. Food and beverages are available to go, but staying a while to relax over a beverage and bite is encouraged.

Hope Café Coffee and Tea House is at 305 Vine St., Suite 5, in the Village Mall in Liverpool, across the street from The Retreat. Hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Fridays, 7

Soleil Café, a coffee shop in Fayetteville owned by Taylor and Shem Doupe, has launched the Soleil Coffee Cart, a portable espresso bar tailor-made for weddings and other private events.

The cart sports a custom, reclaimed barn wood top made by Salt City Fab and a bright, white La Marzocca espresso machine from Italy for making espresso and drinks like cappuccinos, lattes and cortados. The cart is staffed by two baristas and, like the coffee shop, uses coffee beans roasted at Peaks Coffee Company, in Nelson.

TAKING RISKS ON AREA FLOORBOARDS

T

he reputation that summer theater will not take chances was never justified, never more so than this season. We could hardly see greater contrasts than in the offerings of Cortland Repertory Theatre and Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre running in the same time slot.

Closer to Syracuse, Cortland Repertory is presenting through Saturday, Aug. 26, a play no one has heard of by an unknown playwright: Katherine DiSavino’s Nana’s Naughty Knickers. Sure, it sounds like a raucous comedy, but it’s still a leap into the unknown.

Forty-five minutes south, the Hangar is producing through Sept. 2 Joe Calarco’s Shakespeare’s R&J, a restaging and reinterpretation of the Bard’s deathless romance by a small, same-sex cast, this time female. R&J originated at the Hangar more than 20 years ago, enjoyed acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival, went on to long runs in London and New York City, and is now returning home.

DiSavino premiered it at her family’s enterprise, the Rainbow Dinner Theatre in rural Lancaster County, Pa., in 2010, and it has since become one of agent Samuel French’s hottest rentals.

Nana’s rent-controlled apartment on the Upper East Side is populated by what look like small-town WASPs, and only two characters speak with New York accents. It’s an urban farce (four doors) designed to play west of the Hudson.

The Nana of the title is Sylvia Charles, supposed to be 83 according to the script.

White-haired and pint-sized, Peggy Lewis, an experienced Equity player, portrays Nana as constantly on the run, as if she had something to hide. She does.

As we learn through the eyes of her anguished granddaughter Bridget (Jennifer Brunker), Nana has been running a retail lingerie salon for senior women out of her

apartment. She’s not only violating her lease, but she has no license and is not collecting sales tax. Handsome Officer Tim O’Grady (Tom DeMichele) hangs around the apartment making sheep’s eyes at Bridget but never notices anything amiss.

Everyone in the cast, including conveniently deaf gal pal Vera (Ms. Sebastian Ryder), always apoplectic landlord Gil Schmidt (Charles Baran) and sexy model Heather (Caiti Marlowe), all get abundant

laughs, but for screaming hysteria in the packed house, no one can beat the actual lingerie and Shelley Barish’s set design.

To keep her operation discreet, Nana stores the illegal duds in a series of jackin-the-box units, guaranteed to pop open at the wrong time.

tions the four unnamed, regimented students have been male. Director Melissa Kievman (well-remembered for her October 2005 production of Tracy Letts’ controversial Bug) has decided to make them female.

As the girls are wearing blazers and tartan skirts, this could be an affluent school, perhaps run by the Madams of the Sacred Heart.

After a hard day of conjugating Latin verbs and reciting mathematical formulae, the students pull up the floorboards of their dorm room to find a forbidden copy of Romeo and Juliet. They begin to read the lines

to one another, seemingly titillated by the implicit sensuality of the language. They continue, restaging most of the action as a kind of rebellion against authority and an assertion of self. As they perform before the portrait of an ominous ecclesiastic and an imposing clock, the whole thing feels like a subterfuge that could be interrupted.

The students are by no means deconstructing Shakespeare. Instead, by never changing costumes and performing all action on a bare stage, with makeshift props (a ruler for a sword), the production makes the

poetry of the speeches prime. All four players bring experience with Shakespeare, and Nicole King even appeared at the Globe in London.

There’s plenty of action. One speech is delivered while the player is sliding down a bannister. Those skirts come with opaque pantaloons so there’s no distracting immodesty when a character is tumbling on the floor.

As the four are contrasting physical types, we never have any trouble keeping them straight, as well as the characters they play, even the men. Nicole Villamil, she of the bannister, takes on Romeo with a confident voice, never making it a trousers role, aping male manners. Eunice Akinola, although the tallest member of the cast, delivers a vulnerable Juliet.

Amanda Kristin Nichols brings much swagger to Mercutio, especially the death scene. And Nicole King deftly shifts from the arrogant Tybalt to the uber-maternal nurse.

Calarco’s experiment with Shakespeare’s R&J is to test whether the poetry can hold us. Kievman and company assures that it does. SNT

Fair EXCHANGE A checklist of what’s new at the New York State Fair

isitors at the 2016 New York State Fair walked through a new main gate, an enticing visual flashback to the arched carriage-gate style that welcomed turn-of-the-20th-century attendees.

The main gate was part of the fairgrounds’ $50 million cosmetic makeover, although some fairgoers expressed shock and awww about fondly remembered food stands that had to move elsewhere. And a number of perennial vendors were relocated from their familiar homes to new places on the grounds — but their loyal customers couldn’t find them, so the fair eventually resorted to signage that directed people to these businesses.

Nevertheless, the 2016 edition cracked the 1 million attendance mark over its 12 days, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo celebrating the momentous occasion on Labor Day. It’s a good bet that the guv may be back this Labor Day, Sept. 4, as that number could be reached this year, since the fair will be open 13 days starting Wednesday, Aug. 23.

before. And following the learning curve provided by the 2016 redo, fair officials are trying to make things easier. This year, for instance, vendors’ locations will be available on the fair’s new phone app.

Perhaps the most eye-catching new wrinkle will be the Broadway Skyliner chair-lift ride on the midway. It’s a permanent installation paid for by Wade Shows, running 1.400 feet in length and 34 feet high.

The New York State Trooper exhibit has moved to the former DEC Cabin and State Corrections Building. Meanwhile, a new State Police grappling/diving tower has been installed in front of the buildings.

In another relocation, the Taste of New York Marketplace will now take residence inside the Horticulture Building. The marketplace’s former space at Chevy Court is being converted to a backstage/dressing room area. It’s a sign of the times: The

venue was designed long ago for performers along the lines of Anita Bryant and Rosemary Clooney, and not the mega-acts such as the Beach Boys and Earth, Wind and Fire that are now being booked there.

More newbies include: The West End area of the fair offers a new performance stage and other attractions, including the return of the Coronas Circus and the Hollywood Racing Pigs; a new entry arch will welcome visitors at the Pan-African Village; the MooU educational tours take place at the livestock buildings; and a new Turtle Mound dance and presentation area can be found at the Indian Village.

A host of new performers roaming about the grounds will include the Elbridge-based DownBeat Percussion, the official drumline of the Buffalo Bills pro football franchise. Also making its debut will be the Empire Experience Stage area, which will feature a Pride Day program on Friday, Aug. 25; a Hispanic/salsa fest sponsored by CNY Latino on Friday, Aug. 25, through Sunday, Aug. 27; a Family Fishing Day at the Empire Experience pond on Sunday, Aug. 27; and a batch of tribute bands throughout the fair’s run.

Rumors abounded during last year’s fair that certain venues would not be around for 2017. Yet the Gianelli Sausage-Dinosaur Bar-B-Que spot near Chevy Court is secure, and so are the West End Sports Deck and the neighboring Alivero’s food stand. Getting demolished outside the Dairy Building, however, was the WSYR-Channel 9 Newscone, proud beacon of the Fourth Estate. Anchors Rod Wood, Christie Casciano and the rest will still host live newscasts at that same spot, while the infotainment show Bridge Street will have daily 10 a.m. broadcasts at Chevy Court.

Even Hilby the Skinny German Juggling Boy has been uprooted, moving from his former residence near Chevy Court (where he would dish out adlibs regarding the stage act) to a new area. Starting Monday, Aug. 28, at 1, 4 and 7 p,m., Hilby will take his act to a seated outside area near the Coliseum.

Yet there will be comfort from familiar attractions. Hawk Creek Wildlife Center, from East Aurora, returns with its popular “Birds of Prey” show featuring the winged creatures daily at 11 a.m., 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. at the New York State Park. The Art and Home Center, the location for often provocative displays, will offer an exhibit on the women’s suffragette centennial.

And the Dairy Bar will be back for 25-cent cups of white and chocolate milk. The moo juice may be a fine accompaniment to the chocolate-covered deep-fried crickets and grasshoppers available at the Fried Specialties food stand on Restaurant Row. SNT

NAVIGATING THROUGH THE ERIE CANAL’S HISTORY On July 4, 1817, the ground was officially broken for the development of what would become the Erie Canal. The 360-plus-mile waterway and transportation system, which was the second largest in the world in the mid-1920s, proved its economic worth for New York state and the country’s economy.

This significant part of New York history will never fall by the wayside. Several organizations, including the locally operated Erie Canal Museum, Erie Canal Park in Camillus and the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, are determined to keep such rich history a part of the present.

Steve Zeitlin of City Lore is also determined to keep alive the canal’s history.

His story began with a family vacation. In 2004, Zeitlin and his family passed on going abroad and instead rented a houseboat on the Erie Canal. There was something magical about the waterway, he recalled about the decision.

“There is this amazing juxtaposition between the history of the Erie Canal, how it changed and industrialized America, to the deindustrialization I saw on that trip,” he said during a phone interview. “There are many abandoned places and factories.

It seemed to be a great story to be told.”

A year later he and Paul Wagner got together with folklorists from across the state. Each year they picked up on the canal’s changes, as they noted that tourism was helping with the revitalization of the canal. For example, a Seneca Falls mill was converted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

“The story can be told in three parts: the creation of the canal, the industrialization in the late 20th century and then the revival as a tourist byway,” said Zeitlin. “It’s a living museum and a bike trail that will stretch from Buffalo to New York City.”

The New York City-based Zeitlin teamed with Virginia-based Wagner and Syracuse co-producer Dan Ward to release the 2015 film Boom and Bust: America’s Journey on the Erie Canal, a 31-minute documentary. Although the canal’s waterways are still used today, albeit in a limited manner, its overall decline affected not only transportation and shipping methods, but the textile, steel and other industries.

have been taking place all year long, with September shaping up as an especially busy month. Zeitlin is pushing the Heartland Passage Tour, a 10-city journey beginning Saturday, Sept. 2, 5:30 p.m., in Herkimer.

“It was kind of a crazy idea,” he said.

“Ten different events in 10 different cities is a very difficult and complex thing.

We’ve had a great time visiting these places and figuring out how to make the screenings work.”

The Herkimer kickoff takes place on the Diamond III cruise boat and will feature music by the Dady Brothers and Kit Fallon, storytelling and a screening of Boom and Bust. Admission is $20; visit citylore. org for information.

From Herkimer, the group will then venture to Brooklyn for an appearance at the Waterfront Museum on Sunday, Sept. 3.

There will be different musical entertainment and storytellers on hand, but the rest of the programming, including a Boom and Bust screening, will remain the same.

Admission fees for each event will benefit the hosting location.

The tour next travels north along the Hudson River and then westward to Buffalo, hitting up theaters, vessels and museums in Albany, Rochester, Medina, Brockport, Macedon and Lyons along the waterway. The tour climaxes Saturday, Sept. 23, 4 p.m., at Mohegan Manor, 58 Oswego St., Baldwinsville. For $10, patrons will see the film, a performance from Jay Unger and Molly Mason, storytelling and more.

and affected by the Erie Canal provide an exemplary education history books cannot provide. Boom and Bust’s genuine charm is propelled by its on-screen folklorists, as they inspire viewers to learn more.

“Storytelling has always been a part of our work,” said Zeitlin, who holds a Ph.D. in folklore. “Everybody has a story to tell. The older people are not so much the keepers of history: They’re still the keepers of the stories they can tell from their memories. We hope to leave people inspired, entertained and informed. I think people will fall in love with the canal again from hearing the creativity the canal has spawned.”

Syracuse’s Erie Canal Museum, 318 Erie Blvd. E., is also connected to the Heartland Passage Tour. Executive director Natalie Stetson and director of communications Vicki Krisak have been promoting the tour along with other organizations across the state, including Livingston Arts Center in Mount Morris.

Stetson said there are many monumental Syracuse moments. “In 1820, the Montezuma packet boat arrived. DeWitt Clinton was there, but he wasn’t at the initial groundbreaking for the Erie Canal in 1817,” said Stetson. “The Barge Canal, which is referred to as the new canal, was named in 1918, and that will be celebrating its centennial.”

Stetson noted that the tour will lead into the World Canal Conference, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 24, through Thursday, Sept. 28, in Central New York.

The Marriott Syracuse Downtown will be the host hotel for the five-day, four-night conference.

The mornings will feature typical con-

ference sessions with a variety of topics and speakers from around the globe.

Afternoons will feature canal study tours to different parts of the waterway. The westbound tour will venture to Camillus, Port Byron and Seneca Falls. Eastern tours will stop in Chittenango and Rome.

And the northern tour will head to Fulton and Oswego, stopping in Lysander along the way.

The closing ceremonies on Sept. 28 will feature the passing of the canal waters, where the host country of the current year hands off a vessel of their water to the country hosting next year’s World Canal Conference. In this case, the stateside host will pass the liquid baton to Ireland. For information, go to wcc2017syracuse.com.

Krisak hopes these two major events will generate more interest in the canal and the museum. She said there has been an increase in non-Central New York patrons seeking out the museum while they’re in town visiting schools or taking a road trip.

“Our visitation holds steady around 21,000 people per year, which isn’t bad for a little history museum in Syracuse,” Stetson said. “Visitation is growing each year. We do have room to grow, and I think we will.”

The museum’s recent effort has been the summertime Wednesdays at the Weighlock, a weekly hump day and post-work series that features music and adult beverages. “It was something we’ve never tried before,” said Stetson. “We thought it would have been difficult finding 14 weeks of performers. It’s a random gig to play two hours, but it wasn’t difficult at all.”

The Erie Canal Museum is also currently featuring an artist-led lecture and workshop series called Reflections on Erie’s Waters: The Erie Canal in New York State’s History and Future. “Our job is to help paint the picture of this city and region we live in,” said Stetson, “telling how the canal impacted it, changed it and created it.”
