Maintenance workers at the courthouse in Jonesboro, Ark., are fed up with people urinating in the elevators, especially considering that restrooms are within spitting distance of the elevators. Craighead County officials hope to stem the tide with newly installed security cameras, which have caught three men in the act since their installation last fall.

Way To Go

Robert Dreyer, celebrating his 89th birthday, suffered no apparent injury when he crashed his car into a fire hydrant in Viera, Fla., in May. But as he got out of the car to check the damage, he drowned after being sucked into the hole by the strong water pressure where the hydrant had been. A bystander tried to rescue Dreyer but couldn’t overcome the water pressure to reach him.

Male baseball fans attending the June 15 Jacksonville (Fla.) Jumbo Shrimp minor league game were treated to a novel promotional giveaway: pregnancy tests. The “You Might Be a Father” promotion was conceived to help fans decide whether they should return for the Father’s Day game on June 18.

Bird Brains

Because leaving your falcon at home while you do errands is too painful, high-end automaker Bentley now offers a customized SUV featuring a “removable transportation perch and tether” for hunting birds and a wood inlay in the shape of a falcon on the dash. At a starting price of $230,000, the Bentayga Falconry also features a refreshment case and special compartments for bird hoods and gauntlets. “Falconry is regarded as the sport of kings in the Middle East, so it was vital that the kit we create. . . appeal to our valued customers there and around the world,” noted Geoff Dowding with Bentley’s Mulliner division.

A stretch limo wasn’t posh enough for Saudia Shuler, a Philadelphia mom who wanted to make her son’s high school prom memorable. Instead, she spent $25,000 creating a Dubai-themed prom night, including three tons of sand and a camel for pre-prom photos. The lucky senior took not one but three dates to the dance, who along with him wore designer clothes and accessories. Shuler also sprang for a rented Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce and Range Rover.

Bright Idea

Japan’s Samurai Age store, which (naturally) offers novelty samurai apparel, is featuring a new line of samurai armor outfits for cats and dogs. The body armor is sized for small pets, but custom orders for larger sizes are possible, and can include a helmet and mask. Samurai enthusiasts can also order armor for liquor bottles and dolls.

Suspicions were aroused in New Hope, Ala., when veteran mail carrier Susanna Burhans, 47, was seen throwing food at a dog along her route. On June 1, she was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after the dog’s owner found a nail-filled meatball near his house, and a subsequent X-ray revealed nails in its stomach.

The USPS has put the mail carrier on non-duty status.

Bugging Out

Thailand’s Scorpion Queen, who holds the Guinness World Record for holding a scorpion in her mouth (3 minutes and 28 seconds), shocked onlookers in June as she let scorpions crawl all over her body and in and out of her mouth as part of a show in Pattaya, a city on the Gulf of Thailand. Kanchana Kaetkaew also holds the record for co-habiting with 5,000 scorpions in a 12-meter-square glass enclosure for 33 days.

STATERUN GROUP HOMES UNDER FIRE

It was in the summer of 2014 during my internship in Albany when I first heard about Paula Liblick, the developmentally disabled 60-year-old woman who had been raped at a state-run group home in the Hudson Valley in 2009.

Liblick died in 2011 from a parasite that she had contracted during the sexual assault. Her rapist was never found.

Liblick’s brother and several members of the New York Legislature have spent the last few years trying to advance legislation that would require placement of video surveillance cameras at entrances and exits at all state-run group homes.

I recently checked to see if Liblick’s bill, called “Paula’s Law,” had become law. I was surprised to find that it hasn’t even reached the floor at the Capitol. It remains stuck in committee.

Unfortunately, what happened to Liblick isn’t uncommon. In 2015, a DeWitt group home nurse pleaded guilty to falling asleep on the job, which led the patient in her care to get an insufficient amount of oxygen, and the patient died.

In 2016, two employees at the Pontiac Nursing Home in Oswego were charged with touching a disabled patient in a taunting and abusive manner and taking cellphone pictures of the entire act. Two employees at St. Luke’s Health Services, also in Oswego, were charged with verbally and physically abusing and taunting a disabled patient, while recording it on video.

In February, a man who worked at a group home in Rome pleaded guilty to recording a disabled boy performing a sexual act for several minutes on two occasions.

Earlier this month, The Associated Press

revealed that a disabled man at a group home in Rome was found to have maggots crawling around his breathing tube — not once but twice. This case prompted two state assemblymen in the Mohawk Valley — a Democrat and a Republican — to demand a federal investigation into New York’s care for the disabled.

The reason for one is plain. New York has proved time and again that it is simply incapable of properly probing the cases of neglect and abuse of its most vulnerable citizens in its own regulated facilities.

The state agency responsible for handling these types of cases is the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs, created by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2012. But the Justice Center has spent almost its entire tenure withholding crucial information that verifies whether it is actually fulfilling the purpose for which it was created.

Press investigations of the organization have indicated that it hasn’t. For instance, an Associated Press review of the Justice Center last year found that of the 1,400 cases of developmentally disabled people who died in state care between June 2013 and May 2015, the agency had investigated just six. Six. Even when audited by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, the Justice Center only released a drop of the information that was asked for. Auditors demanded access to nearly three years of abuse and neglect reports, but received only 6,250 cases — 8 percent of the 82,000 cases filed in that time period. And in the cases that were handed over, auditors found several instances of sloppy recordkeeping, including three workers with past incidents of abuse or neglect who were not added to a registry of people that prohibits them from providing direct care to patients.

People endure enough mental stress and financial burdens when their disabled family members must be cared for in state-run group homes. They shouldn’t have to also worry that their loved ones may be raped, assaulted, teased or forgotten about in the same place. And if they are, they shouldn’t have to worry about their case being swept under the rug.

Let’s not forget that many disabled people in group homes can’t communicate clearly. The only thing worse than a disabled individual who feels helpless while being abused or neglected is feeling helpless because no one will listen to them.

That’s why it’s up to us to demand change. Because right now, many people in our state-run care aren’t being cared for and the Justice Center isn’t giving them justice. SNT

spector general, which is required by law.

This statute plays a vital role in cracking down on these cases because the inspector general’s office has the power to cut off Medicaid funding to troubled facilities in order to force them to change their ways.

In the three years since I first heard about Paula Liblick, there’s been story after story that shows the Justice Center’s incredible lack of transparency and professionalism. New York has failed its 120,000 disabled citizens. That’s why a federal investigation must go forward.

The worst part of all of this is that a federal investigation would only be examining the Justice Center’s recordkeeping of abuse and neglect cases. As important as that is, it’s merely a hurdle that must be overcome before we even get to the actual heart of the matter: abuse and neglect themselves.

Here are a few venues and shows to keep an eye on.

Lilith Flair. It was 20 years ago that Lilith Fair first changed the game for women in music. The traveling music festival, founded by Sarah McLachlan, Dan Fraser, Terry McBride and Marty Diamond, featured female artists and

female-led bands including Fiona Apple, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Erykah Badu, Lisa Loeb, Lauryn Hill, Liz Phair, Sheryl Crow and more at a time when multiple female artists sharing a bill was extremely rare. This local rendition (Sept.

9, 7 p.m., at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St.) will feature female singers, songwriters and musicians paying tribute to favorite Lilith Fair performers and showcasing their own original materi-

Auburn Public Theater. This multifaceted performance space at 8 Exchange St., Auburn, welcomes events of all kinds spanning theater to music to comedy. It serves as a social and cultural hub for Auburn, a city that has been growing as a prime destination for arts and entertainment. This season’s lineup features Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb (Sept. 27), Leo Kottke (Oct. 4), Aztec Two-Step (Oct. 21), Joanne Shenandoah (Nov. 3), Professor Louie and the Crowmatix (Nov. 4), George Winston (Nov. 19) and Livingston Taylor (Feb. 3). PLAY TIME

Diverse productions will dominate the upcoming theater season

Variety will triumph again on local floorboards. We’ll have Jane Austen, a plant that eats people, Richard Nixon and Mr. Hyde (not together). The Redhouse will move into a huge new venue, Syracuse Stage’s new artistic director Robert Hupp will make his directing debut and someone will call to send in the clowns.

TOP OF THE HEAP Artistic director Robert Hupp can dance to the company rhythm established over the last two decades at Syracuse Stage (820 E. Genesee St.; (315) 433-3275).

This means starting with an hors d’oeuvre, peaking with a family-friendly lollapalooza at the holidays, and taking a risk in January, but he will do this while choosing his own steps.

Hupp will make his Syracuse Stage directorial debut with Catherine Bush’s adaptation of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers (Sept. 20-Oct. 8). Bush, best-known for children’s theater projects, opened this Musketeers in Virginia two years ago. Although she is Canadian, Bush’s text should be distinguished from Peter Slaby’s version at the Stratford Festival four years ago.

Simon Stephens’ Tony Award-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Oct. 25-Nov. 12) adapts the admired but quirky novel of the same title

by Mark Haddon. Afflicted with something resembling autism, 15-year-old Christopher talks like an idiot savant, knowing every prime number up to 7,507 but unable to report on the everyday world around him. But he has the self-possession to respond when he is wrongly accused of murdering a neighbor’s dog.

The Wizard of Oz (Nov. 29-Dec. 31), officially an offering of the Syracuse University Drama Department, should be the biggest box-office draw of any local production of the season. Press announcements imply it will not resemble the hugely successful Robert Moss-Anthony Salatino collaboration of 2003. New York City-based director Donna Drake will lead the cirque-like choreography of the 2 Ring Circus company. Brian Cimmet

will deliver the great Hollywood score by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, and students will fill the male and female choruses. This is the one story Americans know better than any other, including Huckleberry Finn and Hamilton.

Director Hupp returns along with choreographer Anthony Salatino for the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning rock musical Next to Normal (Jan. 17-Feb. 4). Composer Tom Kitt and lyricist Brian Yorkey give musical expression to a woman’s profoundest fears, that she might be gradually slipping into madness. African-American specialist director Timothy Douglas (Jitney, Gem of the Ocean) will breathe new life into A Raisin in the Sun (Feb. 21-March 11), Lorraine Hansberry’s Eisenhower-era drama of white resistance to blacks in the suburbs. The show will be co-produced with Indiana Repertory Theatre.

Halena Kays directs the season closer, a co-production with Portland Center Stage. Andrew Hindraker’s The Magic Play (April 25-May 13) depicts a successful young magician reeling from a recent romantic breakup, as he struggles to keep his offstage angst from undermining his stage illusions.

New this season but not part of the subscription package is Cold Read: A Winter Festival of New Plays (Feb. 8-11). Playwrights, professional actors and directors will read and compare scripts, one of which will have a staged reading for possible acceptance on a future Syracuse Stage roster. Hors d’oeuvres and local craft beer will be served.

“Upstate’s only off-Broadway theater,” the slogan for the innovative Kitchen Theatre Company (417 W. State St., Ithaca; (607) 272-0570), will need some revamping.

The much-loved former artistic director Rachel Lampert always reminded audiences of her New York City roots, and several of her original works were set in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

Under new artistic director M. Bevin O’Gara, who moved here from Boston, only one of the seven scheduled shows premiered in Manhattan, whereas three are Beantown-based. As in the Lampert era, every production is an area premiere. Every playwright is also a distinguished prize-winner, maybe even a few years younger than those of recent seasons.

the Harvard community: Are motivations hoard-wired or learned in the environment? Brahmanli; One-Hijra Stand-Up Comedy Show (Oct. 8-29) by Indian-Bulgarian playwright Aditi Brennan Kapil is a comic drama, despite the title, about the Hindu deity Vishnu. O’Gara will direct the show.

Every Brilliant Thing (Nov. 10-Dec. 10) by Duncan MacMillan promises to be an uproarious comedy about overcoming depression and includes audience participation. MacMillan’s Lungs was featured in the Lampert era; company regular Wendy Dann will direct.

O’Gara will direct Martyna Majok’s Ironbound (Jan. 21-Feb. 4), about two decades in the life of a Polish immigrant woman searching for the American dream in New Jersey. Women are also the focus of Tanya Barfield’s Bright Half Life (March 4-18), about the trials and poignancy of an ongoing, interracial lesbian love affair.

Macho athleticism dominates Walt McGough’s Brawler (April 8-22), about the scariest man in the National Hockey League who finds himself demoted to the minors. O’Gara directs this world premiere. There could be some gender-bending in Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers’ Matt and Ben (May 27-June 10). Matt Damon and his pal Ben Affleck set out to do an adaptation of Catcher in the Rye but came up with Good Will Hunting instead. In the original production, Kaling (the Indian-American comic actress from NBC’s The Office) and Withers played the leads themselves.

Generations of Central New Yorkers have been introduced to Broadway glamour through Famous Artists/ NAC Enterprises (241 W. Fayette St.; (315) 424-8210), the series Murray Bernthal founded after World War II. Two big hits will run at the Landmark Theatre (362 S. Salina St.). Disney’s The Lion King (Oct. 26-Nov. 12) is already the most popular show in the history of the cosmos, and another three weeks in town will give people the chance to see it for perhaps the fourth or fifth time.

And a passionately remembered 1988 American movie is the basis for Dirty Dancing (May 15-20), as Baby, the pampered daughter of a privileged family, crosses the class barrier.

An ambitious rogue must bump off eight senior claimants to an inheritance, all played by the same actor. Winter brings the singular sensation of Marvin Hamlisch’s A Chorus Line (Feb. 20-22). And Kinky Boots (March 13-15) employs a Cyndi Lauper score to adapt the 2005 British movie.

The 43rd season of Syracuse Opera (411 Montgomery St.; (315) 476-7372) plays favorites with three classics: Bizet’s Carmen (Oct. 20, 22), Verdi’s La Traviata (Feb. 2, 4) and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly (April 13, 15). The productions will take place at the Mulroy Civic Center’s Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater (411 Montgomery St.).

At press time the move to Redhouse@CityCenter in the former Sibley’s Department Store on South Salina Street was expected to be in midwinter. Thus the first three productions will be in the smaller Armory Square space, and the other two in springtime, both wide-market crowd-pleasers, will be in the new, larger digs.

sibly handsome Hollywood star, is trying to come out of the closet while Diane, his tough-talking agent, tries to keep him in. Founding Redhouse artistic director Laura Austin returns, joined by Max Emerson, the rising star and underwear model. The fast-paced, funny and frightening comedy of Jeffrey Jones’ 70 Scenes of Halloween (Oct. 19-29) follows. Jeff (company favorite John Bixler) plans to spend a quiet night at home with his wife Joan, but things do not work out that way.

The farewell toast to the original venue will be Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt’s I Do! I Do! (Nov. 30-Dec. 17). We follow Michael and Agnes through 50 years of marriage on one set for this musical version of Jan de Hartog’s The Four Poster.

With the move to the bigger space comes Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond (March 8-18). Acerbic Professor Thayer is on vacation in Maine, irritated to be 80 and fearing losing his faculties.

Audiences should know that Thompson’s Thayer is crabbier than Henry Fonda was in the much-sweeter 1981 film version.

The big production for the big new stage will be the Jerry Herman musical La Cage aux Folles (May 31-June 10).

Harvey Fierstein adapted the immortal French film farce about ZaZa and the Cagelles puttin’ on the straights on the Riviera.

Now in its 13th year, Dan Tursi’s always adventuresome Rarely Done Productions (performances at Jazz Central, 441 E. Washington St.; (315) 546-3224) brings back two favorites along with five provocative area premieres in four features (one is a double-header). Company favorite Jimmy Curtin will appear in the title role of Daily Show writer David Javerbaum’s An Act of God (Sept. 15-30), based on the playwright’s best-selling book, The Last Testament: A Memoir By God. That divine title role was a hit for TV’s Jim Parsons on Broadway. Love and AIDS are themes in William M. Hoffman’s As Is (Oct. 13-27). Young writer David (Joshua Kimball) is about to break up with his longtime lover Saul (Jason Timothy) but changes his mind.

In the company’s most ambitious venture, two political dramas will be presented in repertory, Nov. 3-18. Beau Willimon’s Farragut North deals with the final days of the 2008 Iowa presidential primary; it was adapted into the George Clooney film The Ides of March. In Keith Reddin’s Frame 312, a retired magazine editor tells her grown children that she is in possession of the unedited, original Zapruder film of events in Dallas, Nov. 22, 1963. Although in tandem, the two

productions have different casts.

For the holidays, Rarely Done expects to bring back (rights pending) one of its biggest hits of recent years, Danni Giacino’s Disenchanted (Dec. 1-16), an often lethal spoof of a bevy of folkloric princesses in their Disney costumes.

Following a winter hiatus will be Defying Gravity: The Songs of Stephen Schwartz

by Stephen Schwartz (April 6-21). His first hits were Godspell and Pippin, and his Wicked has been running for more than a decade. Ending the season is William Finn’s Falsettos (April 27-May 12), a repeated sellout for the company over several years. Marvin struggles to create a tight-knit family out of disparate relationships. Peter Irwin and Aubry Panek will appear.

Not yet 10 years old, artistic director Dustin Czarny’s Central New York Playhouse (Shoppingtown Mall; (315) 885-8960) has now become the biggest community company of them all in its 4,500-square-foot space by doing everything, including French farce and Shakespeare.

The season begins with the most elegant of all Stephen Sondheim musicals, A Little Night Music (Sept. 8-23), with his all-time hit, “Send in the Clowns.” Longtime dancer and choreographer Shannon Tompkins sharply switches gears to direct Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (Oct. 13-28), ostensibly about the Salem witch trials but implicitly an indictment of McCarthy-era intimidation. British playwright Peter Morgan edited the words of a memorable television interview to produce the electrifying Frost/Nixon (Nov. 10-18). David Frost, a presumed lightweight, exposed the dark soul of the disgraced president; Justin Polly directs.

For the holidays, Patricia Catchouny will direct the bittersweet part-musical, The 1940s Radio Hour (Dec. 1-15).

The company’s annual winter farce will be Marc Camoletti’s Boeing, Boeing (Jan. 12-27), about one roué and three airline hostesses. Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon (Feb. 9-17), about a mentally challenged man briefly thrust into intellectual brilliance, is perhaps better-known under the title of its 1968 film adaptation, Charly; William Edward White directs.

Experienced Shakespearean Trevor Hill will direct Hamlet (May 11-19). And Korrie Taylor will helm Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods (June 8-23), the fractured fairy tale musical.

Center, 64 Oswego Road, Baldwinsville) has only one production at press time: Michael Frayn’s three-part farce Noises Off (Sept. 22-Oct. 7), directed by Korrie Taylor. The area’s longest-running community theater group is embargoing word of other productions until rights are secured, but we are likely to see the area premiere of a new musical in January and the revival of a vintage 1930s comedy in April or May. Josiah Benedict of Atonement Housing Corporation announces that Appleseed Productions (116 W. Glen Ave.; (315) 492-9766) is awaking from its two-year sleep. Award-winning director Tina Lee will stage Horton Foote’s Trip to Bountiful (Oct. 6-22) featuring Becky Bottrill in the lead. How far does she have to travel to revisit the dream of her youth? Tina Lee will return for a springtime mounting of The Bridges of Madison County, a romance of middle-aged adultery based on Robert James Waller’s best-selling novel.

Now in its 58th year, Onondaga Hillplayers ((315) 447-8251), the last dinner theater in town, continues its annual best buy productions at the Marcellus Golf Club (formerly the Links at Sunset Ridge), 2814 W. Seneca Turnpike, as the company survives founder Jack Skillman’s retirement. Director Tank Steingraber and stage manager Nancy Morrison will continue with Neil Simon’s comedy California Suite (Oct. 27-29, Nov. 3-5), about four couples in a posh Beverly Hills hotel.

The Syracuse Shakespeare Festival ((315) 476-1835) has been winning friends with free Shakespeare shows in Thornden Park for 15 years. Energetic company artistic director Ronnie Bell was early in announcing titles, and details will follow on the website syrsf.org.

Bell writes and directs Ebenezer Scrooge and the Shakespeare Ghosts (December), an original musical parody using familiar Christmas songs with a mash-up of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and famous Shakespearean ghosts at the Community Foundation Ballroom, 431 E. Fayette St. A repertory production follows of Tracy Letts’ August, Osage County and Shakespeare’s Macbeth (February), as Sara Caliva and Tony Brown will direct a single cast at the New York State Fairgrounds’ Empire Theater. Jenn DeCook and Lynn King will coordinate 24 Hour Show (April) in which preregistered and last-minute writers, director and actors will produce their own best 10- to 20-minute plays in 24 hours. The shows go on at downtown’s Cantor Warehouse Theater, 350 W. Fayette St.

YOUNG AT HEART No one else programs Chekhov and Gershwin, Isabelle Allende and Audrey II in the same season except the Syracuse University Drama Department (820 E. Genesee St.). The first of the three musicals is Ken Ludwig and Mike Ockrent’s revamping of classic George Gershwin tunes in Crazy for You (Oct. 6-15). Newcomer Brian J. Marcum will direct and choreograph.

Although she hailed from Chile, Isabelle Allende’s The House of the Spirits (Nov. 10-18), based on her much-esteemed novel, is set in an unnamed country.

Celia Madeoy directs this powerful and poetic stage adaptation about a woman imprisoned for unspecified reasons. Rob Bundy, another new faculty member, will guide Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull (Feb. 23-March 4), one of the undisputed pinnacles of European drama. Discussion of literature and unrequited love calls for the subtlest of performances.

Paula Vogel’s Baltimore Waltz (March 30-April 8) is a satiric comedy about a teacher named Anna who takes a madcap world tour after her brother contracts a mysterious, unnamed fatal malady.

Wrapping the season is the Howard Ashman-Alan Menken musical adaptation of Roger Corman’s allegorical B-movie The Little Shop of Horrors (May 4-12). Brian Cimmet directs this dark comedy about the carnivorous plant that ate Skid Row. Over at the Le Moyne College Boot and Buskin Drama Club (1419 Salt Springs Road; (315) 445-4523), Professor Matt Chiorini, one of the most skilled directors in the area, emphasizes contemporary playwrights, starting with a fresh take on a classic English novel. American comic writer Jeffrey Hatcher (Three Viewings) usually unsettles the staid, as will be the case with his adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Oct. 27, 28, Nov. 2-4). Winter semester brings American absurdist Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s Bob: A Life in Three Acts (Feb. 9, 10, 15-17), a comic exploration of the treacherous pursuit of happiness.

Later in spring comes Kate Hamill’s playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility (March 16, 17, 22-24), about the fortunes and misfortunes of the Dashwood sisters in Regency England. And a one-weekend lagniappe at the end of the season will be Macbeth: In Concert (April 26-28), with new music assigned to the Scottish play about a husband and wife consumed with bloody ambition. Exhibits aplenty will be mounted at area galleries and museums

By Carl Mellor The 2017 autumn art season will encompass numerous group exhibitions, solo shows and a slew of subjects. Local venues will display mega-sculptures, cups and napkins, delve into topics ranging from a Syracuse park to rocks and the political climate in Taiwan, explore family relationships and how we recall various historical events.

ArtRage Gallery (503 Hawley Ave.; (315) 2185711) begins its fall schedule with Seen and Heard: Embracing Our Past, Empowering Our Future. It’s a group exhibit featuring works by Anne Cofer and Mary Giehl, Mary Stanley, Candace Rhea, Gail Hoffman and other female artists from Central New York. A Sept. 9 reception starts at 7 p.m. The show ends Oct. 21.

Downtown Syracuse’s Everson Museum of Art (401 Harrison St.; (315) 474-6064) has already opened Monumental, a display of large works by Eric Staller, Ann Sperry and other sculptors, and Unique, a group exhibition celebrating the talents of Central New Yorkers living with disabilities. On Sept. 15, the museum premieres TR Ericsson: I Was Born to Bring You Into This World, which continues his inquiry into his mother’s life and their family archives, and Sune Woods: When A Heart Scatter, Scatter, Scatter, with the artist using video, photographs and collage to explore desire, forgiveness and resilience. Unique closes Oct. 1, while the other exhibits wrap Dec. 31.

Point of Contact (350 W. Fayette St.; (315) 4432169) is showing Pedro Roth’s Aleph, a series of drawings on napkins gathered from various cafes in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The napkins are combined into an installation. There will be a reception on Sept.

The Onondaga Historical Association (321 Montgomery St.; (315) 428-1864) has several exhibits under way, including All That Jazz: 35 Years of Syracuse Jazz Fest, which documents the festival’s appearance at various sites and its showcasing of Dizzy Gillespie and other stars. The War to End All Wars: Onondaga County Encounters World War I presents gas masks, uniforms, posters, letters and other archival material.

Clayscapes Pottery Gallery (1003 W. Fayette St.; (315) 424-6868) is hosting a display of ceramics by its students through Sept. 9. Another group show, Wonder Women: Directions in Art by 14 Female CNY Artists, runs through Sept. 22 at the Syracuse Tech Garden (235 Harrison St.; (315) 427-5787). It includes paintings, drawings, and other media.

La Casita Cultural Center (109 Otisco St.; (315) 443-2151) will celebrate Latin music with Fusion Caribe: The History of Our Music, which presents photos, memorabilia and other objects. A Sept. 15 reception begins at 6 p.m. and will feature live and recorded music.

Apostrophe’S (1100 Oak St.; (614) 209-7503) just opened Creating Memories of Schiller Park, works by artists living in the neighborhood adjacent to the North Side park. The exhibition runs through Sept. 16.

On the Syracuse University campus, Light Work

Gallery (316 Waverly Ave.; (315) 443-1300), has a full slate of shows on display. To Sleep with Terra presents Sune Woods’ collages and works on paper, discussing how photography has been used for exploitation and propaganda.

The gallery is also displaying pieces by winners of the 2017 Light Work grants: Joe Librandi-Cowan, who focuses on mass incarceration; Mary Helena Clark, an artist intensely interested in film and video; and Stephanie Mercedes, whose work investigates memories of human rights violations, most notably Argentina’s “dirty war.” The trio, and Woods, will be feted at a Sept. 13 reception beginning at 5 p.m.

Finally, the Urban Video Project, a partnership involving Light Work and several organizations, will project the Sune Woods video A Feeling Like Chaos on the northern facade of the Everson Museum. That will take place Thursdays through Saturdays from dusk to 11 p.m. starting Sept. 14.

SU Art Galleries (Shaffer Art Building; (315) 443-4097) is currently showing Meant To Be Shared: Selections from the Arthur Ross Collection of Prints at Yale University Art Gallery. It features works by Francisco Goya, Edouard Manet and other wellknown artists. In Gratitude: The Museum Project, a series of photos in various styles, celebrates recent donation of artworks to the university’s collection.

Edgewood Gallery (216 Tecumseh Road; (315) 445-8111) is displaying Nature Observed, a blend of watercolors, acrylics, sculpture and jewelry depicting or reflecting on wildlife and our connection to nature.

That exhibit wraps Sept. 22, giving way to Jee Eun Lee’s one-woman exhibition which opens Sept. 29.

On Sept. 9, Associated Artists opens its 91st juried exhibit at the Manlius Public Library (1 Arky Albanese Way; (315) 682-6400). There will be a Sept. 17 reception beginning at 2 p.m.

Gandee Gallery (7846 Main St., Fabius; (315) 416-6339) is showcasing Robert Colley’s photos of landscapes and Lucille Wellner’s watercolors until Sept. 17. Then on Sept. 30 Gandee opens The Almighty Cup, an invitational juried exhibit presenting artworks made in Central New York and around the country. More than 100 cups will be on display.

In Auburn, the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center (205 Genesee St.; (315) 255-1553), has scheduled a Sept. 1 opening for Bedrock Revealed: Geologic Landscapes, a series of large composite images by Jonathon Wells; Underlyling Factors: Artists Inspired by Geology, a group show; and Ellen Haffar’s exhibit discussing environmental threats faced by fireflies, bees and butterflies. All three exhibitions end Oct. 15, as the gallery will begin hanging Quilts = Art = Quilts, an annual show which opens Oct. 29.

SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Art Gallery (315) 312-2113) is showing Judith Ann Benedict: An Illustrated Life. She illustrated children’s books and was an influential teacher at SUNY Oswego.

At Cornell University, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art (607) 255-6464) is the venue for Power, Haunting, and Resilience, a 14-artist exhibition dealing with social ideology and authoritarian behavior in Taiwan. On Sept. 9, the museum opens Sama Alshaibi: Silsila, a series of photos and videos discussing migration, borders and environmental issues.

And in Utica, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute (310 Genesee St.; (315) 797-0000) hosts Roaring Into The Future: New York 1925-1935, which presents an array of artworks and artifacts including paintings, video, music and fashion. uring a career that has spanned more than 40 years, Nancy Kelly has toured the world from Switzerland to Singapore, and landed in the top 50 on the national JazzWeek charts. She started piano at age 4, studied voice at the Eastman School of Music, was twice named “Best Female Jazz Vocalist” in the Down Beat Readers’ Poll and continues to play rooms around the world, including New York City’s Birdland.

Kelly is planning her sixth recording project, yet she’s not looking toward a record label for assistance. She is running a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign through Saturday, Sept. 16, with a goal of $16,500. Kelly is raising funds to record a CD that pays tribute to Mark Murphy, the late, legendary jazz singer with Salt City ties.

“I am collaborating with pianist John DiMartino on this project,” Kelly says on her Kickstarter campaign page. “He, too, is a huge Mark Murphy fan and we are very excited to see this endeavor take on its own life. You certainly won’t need to be a Mark fan to be moved by the music I’ve chosen for this recording. Mark’s music went through many changes as he grew and matured. I’m going to record the songs that most affected me as an artist. These compositions nourished me and gave birth to my jazz soul.”

The idea began when Kelly teamed with international booking agent Jean-Pierre Leduc, Murphy’s last manager, following the release of her 2015 album B That Way. After Murphy’s death in October 2015, the idea seemed timely.

“Mark Murphy was the first jazz singer I was introduced to,” Kelly says. “Most people in music, you grow up hearing Ella (Fitzgerald), Billie (Holiday), Count Basie. But a pianist made me listen to several of Mark’s records and they changed me as a jazz singer. These songs formed who I am. I can hear Mark’s voice singing to me. It’s very personal.”

Kelly became a huge Murphy fan, but was floored when she later found out that he was from the Syracuse area. She was more amazed when she found out his family had a camp in Fair Haven, right where Kelly lived.

“We would hang out and go sailing,” she recalls. “And I found out recently after he passed that I was one of his favorite jazz singers. It’s very flattering when someone who’s one of the best of what they do in the world makes a statement like that.”

Although the CD’s collection of songs will salute Murphy, Kelly promises that the project will very much be her own.

“In jazz, we don’t recreate something the way it’s already been done,” she explains.

“We use it as a palette to create a com-

plete new life form.”

The idea for the album started taking shape six months ago and will continue with the help of the Kickstarter funds.

“Record labels have changed completely,” Kelly says. “For most of my jazz career, I had a record label: Amherst Records, a small, but powerful independent label. I’d drive to Buffalo with my ideas, drive home with a track. That’s how it worked. But those days are gone. We have to reach out to the people who love the music and love us. The public has to be responsible for keeping art alive.”

Kelly also believes that crowd-funding programs like Kickstarter are so worthy of support from music lovers. “We’re in an environment where vulgarity and lack of culture is at the forefront,” she says.

“It’s been documented for thousands of years that once the culture in a society starts dying, the society fails. So keeping art alive is like keeping God in your life, like keeping love in your life.

“In order to create great art, you need to get into that space-time continuum where God lives. When you’re drawing from that and bringing it into physical form, you’re bringing love into everyone’s life.

I can’t even put into words how important it is. You don’t have to like jazz: It’s about keeping culture alive in your society.”

FLASHCUBES IN NEW WAVE REUNION

Funk ’N Waffles, 307 S. Clinton St., will be a musical playground on Friday, Sept.

1, 8 p.m., as some of the loudest bands born in Central New York gather for Bright Lights, the third installment of the music series that pays tribute to the local new wave and punk rock scenes.

The show kicks off with Maura and the Bright Lights, a band formed several years ago featuring Syracuse-bred, New York City-based Maura and Peter Kennedy. Also on the bill will be The Trend and another band to be named, since the originally scheduled outfit The Ohms backed out due to conflicts.

The Flashcubes will headline with a celebration of their 40th anniversary. Paul Armstrong and Tommy Allen will be coming in from Boston and New York City, respectively, joining Syracuse-based band mates Gary Frenay and Arty Lenin. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

In a phone interview with Frenay, he noted that the band’s anthology double album, Flashcubes Forever, will be available for $20. “I was talking with a friend and asked him if $20 was too much,” said Frenay. “‘No,’ he said, ‘that’s about 50 cents per year.’”

Why are you excited to play with the band again?

Arty and I play live for a living, mainly acoustic gigs. The biggest difference when we step on stage as The Flashcubes is that it’s so freakin’ loud and aggressive, the likes of which I don’t experience anymore at my other gigs with The FabCats or other things we do. Tommy Allen is one of the loudest drummers on the planet. It starts with that and then everybody turns themselves up to be able to hear.

What was the idea behind The Flashcubes?

No one knew what to make of us. We worked at record stores and were Anglophiles. The British new wave scene was happening at the time, and the goal was to create a band like the Sex Pistols, The Jam and The Clash. In America we had The Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie and Talking Heads.

We were hipper than the average kid, because we ordered all the imports. Arty and I were big Beatles guys. Tommy was a little younger and into Badfinger and The Raspberries. Paul is British-born, but moved here as a young kid. He’s always had a strong inclination toward the Sex Pistols and The Jam. He brought kind of an abrasive edge, the sort of Beatle-y harmony thing that Arty and I did, and then the

energy Tommy had from the power-pop bands.

We were ahead of where local radio and local tastes were. We played places like The Brookside and The Firebarn. No one knew what to make of us. David Rezak from DMR Booking Agency, which still exists, booked us everywhere, including dive bars. People would look at us like, what are you guys doing? We were playing our own songs and Sex Pistols songs.

Before Armory Square was Armory Square, there was a warehouse where people threw sort of rave parties before that was a term. There was a new wave band that predated us called The Cuban Eels.

We were getting ready at Paul’s apartment in Eastwood and someone wanted to take a picture of us. This guy asked where his flashcubes were. We’d already been practicing at that point and had been trying to think of a name. Paul and I looked at each other: Flashcubes, that’s a good name.

Bright lights going off, excitement. Of course, we didn’t know how much of a dated term it was as the days went by.

Was there a moment that propelled your popularity?

Then Syracuse University kids found out about us. The majority of the student population came from downstate. They knew about bands like The Ramones and wore their T-shirts. They knew about (Manhattan club) CBGB. When they got word there was a new wave band, they flocked to us and encouraged us to play on campus. We played at Jabberwocky in, I think, December 1977. In six weeks, we’re on the cover of the Syracuse New Times. Next thing you know we have a huge following, thanks to these students.

At one point, around 1978 or 1979, Playboy did a feature on the coolest or weirdest new wave band names and we were on the list.

Do you think Funk’N Waffles will attract a younger crowd for your show?

It’ll be all of our old friends. Maybe there will be a few younger people there, but they will probably be the children of our old friends. We don’t assume we’ll appeal to younger people. Some people will know us, yes. We sort of know who our audience is at this point.

What can people expect at this anniversary show?

A lot of older things we haven’t played in years. The band continues to play. We call them reunions, but we’re really a band that just plays once a year. We’ve been doing a modern Flashcubes show for

the past 10 years.

The Trend is a really notable punk band.

They were teenagers at the time. Their first single now sells for over $600 on eBay. They’re a riot. They don’t play for a living like we do, but they really bring it.

How is it performing today in the local music scene?

Good and not good. I consider myself the luckiest person in the world to do this.

Arty and I are two of the lucky ones. I’m slowing down a little bit. I’m 64, so I’m trying to work a little less now. We have our friends and followers who come to see us regularly at the Dinosaur Bar-BQue, the Sherwood Inn or the University Sheraton, where we’ve been performing happy hour every week for 17 years now.

I think it’s the longest running steady gig in the history of Syracuse.

What went into putting this show and Flashcubes Forever together?

It was last December or January when I realized it was our 40th anniversary and we should do something. The first gig we played was Sept. 1, 1977, at The Brookside. The date falls on a Friday this year, so I called Charley (Orlando) at Funk N Waffles, and he said he’d hold the date.

We started putting together a two-CD set. We had the tracks from a live concert we did a few years ago in Cortland. (Allen) is a producer and began to remix the songs from that. Then we started to assemble a disc of our loose tracks, B-sides, singles and others, a “best of” our studio releases over the past 15 years.

What was the appeal of British performers that attracted so many people, especially an American audience?

It was a reaction against the music of the 1970s, which was prog rock and classic rock, plus big hair and light shows. It was a reaction against the way things had gotten with Boston, Yes, Foreigner and all that. Sometimes you’d be applauding the light shows more than the music.

New wave stripped it back down to two

guitars, a bass and drums. There wasn’t a big production to the shows except for these exciting bands.

If you ever saw The Ramones live, it was an unbelievable experience. It was a dump truck blowing right through you.

They were just these four guys with their bangs, leather jackets and the sound they created. We opened for The Ramones six times. Every time it was breathtaking to see them.

Do you have other Ramones stories?

The best and worst were at a show we played with them in Poughkeepsie. They finished recording the End of the Century album with Phil Spector in Los Angeles. I remember connecting with Johnny Ramone in the back room, because he was a big New York Yankees fan as am I. We were talking about recording with Spector, how he didn’t like it and how crazy Spector was. They would be in the recording studio and he would have a revolver sitting in his lap while mixing songs. This was kind of a precursor to years later when you found out what happened to Spector.

We got on stage to play and The Ramones’ fans, who clearly aren’t there to see The Flashcubes, are throwing sandwiches at us as we play.

In Syracuse we played with The Ramones at the recently torn down Uncle Sam’s on Erie Boulevard. It was for the premiere of their (1979) movie Rock’n’Roll High School. We played a set, they screened the movie and then The Ramones came on and played. And supposedly, someone told me, it was the first time they had seen the finished cut of the movie.

Any other strange moments?

When playing at this one bar in Middleville, I think it was The Loft, the owner was throwing ice cubes at us while we were on stage. We asked him afterward why and he said that he thought we liked it, because we’re punks and wanted to be abused. SNT
