The phenomenal Japanese singer Hatsune Miku, with 100 million YouTube hits, is coming off of a sold-out, 10-city North American concert tour with high-energy audiences, with blocks-long lines to get in, raucous crowd participation and hefty souvenir sales. Except that “she” isn’t real. Hatsune Miku is a projected hologram on stage singing and dancing — but her band is human — and her May show in Dallas, according to a Dallas Observer review, typically ignited frenzied fans who know the show’s “every beat, outfit and glow stick color-change.” Her voice, a synthesized “vocaloid,” is crafted in pitch, timbre and timing to sound human. Incidentally, the latest PlayStation brings Hatsune Miku into the home by virtual reality.

Investigators revealed in July that an off-duty Aurora, Colo., sheriff’s deputy had justifiably fired his gun to resist a parking lot mugging — and that, furthermore, one of the bullets from Deputy Jose Marquez’s gun had gone straight into the barrel of one of the handguns pointed at him. The investigators called the shot “one in a billion.”

Matthew Lavin, 39, drew internet acclaim in July after he was gored through his left thigh while “running with the bulls” in the annual spectacle in Pamplona, Spain. Interviewed in his hospital bed by Madrid’s The Local, he called it “the best time ever” and said he looked forward to another run next year.

What Goes Around

Gary Durham, 40, was shot to death during a heated road-rage incident in Plant City, Fla., on Aug. 10. Durham had served 10 years in prison after an aggressive road-rage episode in 2001 in which he pursued another driver and knocked him to the ground, causing the man to hit his head, fatally, on the pavement. Included in Durham’s 2002 sentence was an order to take anger management classes.

Tourists Gone Wild

Tourism officials in Iceland recently posted “hundreds” of signs at visitor attractions showing a squatting person in silhouette, with a small pile on the ground underneath — and the familiar diagonal line indicating “don’t.” Critics of the signs reluctantly admit Iceland’s chronic shortage of public restrooms.

CHICAGO CAPS CHEVY COURT LINEUP

C

hicago, set to climax the Chevy Court free concert slate at the New York State Fair on Monday, Sept. 5, 6 p.m., will be a must-see for classic rock fans who have watched their career stand the test of time. Keyboardist, singer and songwriter Robert Lamm, 71, who has been performing with Chicago since 1967, chatted with the Syracuse New Times about the band’s legacy. Tell me about the beginnings of Chicago. I was approached in high school by some guys who wanted to start a rock band. Somehow they knew I played piano. We went to listen to another band playing at a record hop in Chicago and that band had a keys player with an electric piano. It was new at the time, the early 1960s. They asked, “Would you be willing to get one of those?” and I said, “Yeah, I love how it sounds.” My mom signed the bill, I paid her back and I bought an electric piano. Were you a primary songwriter for the band from the start? When I studied in Chicago (at Roosevelt University), I intended to be a composer, but ended up in a rock band. But I think if that music was happening in the 17th century, Mozart would have been playing in a rock band. It was a great situation because I fell in with Chicago in its formative stages and right from the get-go we needed original music to record — and there I was. Here I was in a rock band, writing, performing songs and recording songs with skilled musicians, and everyone participated on whatever level they wished to. I was lucky. It was a synchronicity type thing. What has it been like to watch the changing technology of the keyboard?

8.31.16 - 9.6.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Once Chicago had started touring and became a headliner, some of the recordings were done on electric pianos, Fender Rhodes in particular, and that started being the dominant keyboard with acoustic piano and Hammond organ. I used all three in the studio and dragged a concert grand with me around the world for years. It really took until the late 1980s-early 1990s for digital instruments to really begin to mimic an acoustic piano. Now it’s completely off the charts in terms of how great digital instruments sound. It was an advantage in terms of traveling performances because it really lightened our load by probably 1,000 pounds. But I still miss the sound and physicality of playing a grand piano. What keeps you going after so many decades with this band? When people go into music, they tend to stay in it once they discover both the influential and emotional fulfillment it provides. And the longer you do it, the more you realize you don’t know. Chicago has always been made up of people committed to the music and the band. There have been personnel changes, deaths, changes that occur naturally, but you just keep going. It’s always been fulfilling and fun to play for live audiences. Music is meant to be enjoyed in a live

situation. And we’ve met people from all walks of life, both accomplished and famous and everyday people who are amazing. I’ve traveled all over the world. It’s a really enlightening and broadening experience. I’m very fortunate. How have you overcome those personnel changes? Every change isn’t a matter of overcoming: It’s adapting. You consider carefully who’s coming in and who’s going out. With Chicago, it’s such a body of work that has become part of the lexicon of pop music in the 21st century. Most musicians are already familiar, so it’s just a matter of getting them up to speed. What was it like being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? We were first eligible sometime in the mid-1990s and it didn’t look like the Hall of Fame was really into inducting us at that time. We continued to record and tour and be a good band. When we were chosen, we eventually met the other bands (including Deep Purple and the Steve Miller Band) and talked about the playing order and what songs each band would play. We got together and the whole thing — the ceremony, rehearsals, meeting the other bands — was terrific fun. I think we got something like 37 million votes from the online community. We realize that’s a lot of people in our corner for a very long time. That’s a real thrill. You’ve been paired with Earth, Wind and Fire on many tours. Tell me about that. We do it seasonally and it’s always fun. They are wonderful musicians with an incredible repertoire. It’s like family now rather than embarking on a once-in-alifetime tour. It’s always amazing to sing and play their songs. We haven’t done the tour internationally yet and we’re taking the first step around the world. I’m really looking forward to it. What career advice do you have for musicians? I don’t know why any musician would take advice from me. I haven’t taken any from anyone else. But the most important thing is to practice. I don’t enough, still. When I do, there’s so many distractions that keep you from remembering that’s it’s really about the music. It’s not about being famous or the clothes you wear or the videos you make. It’s about the music. If you keep that in mind — and I’m not saying not to enjoy the other things — you can have longevity and a very fulfilling life. Being a musician is a very honorable profession. Oh, and don’t forget to vote! SNT

Vote for us by 9/21! PICKER ART GALLERY Cast members of Merry-Go-Round Playhouse’s Treasure Island. Ron Heerkens Jr. photo

PIRATES SHAKE THEIR BOOTY IN TREASURE ISLAND Spoiler alert: In the new musical Treasure Island: A New Musical for a New Generation, running through Sept. 10 at Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Long John Silver neither has a parrot on his shoulder nor does he say, “Arrr-rrr-rrr.” Co-authors Brett Smock (who also directed) and Carla Vitale subscribe to the informed view that works with lasting appeal for young audiences, like the non-musical Peter Pan or The Wizard of Oz, benefit from profound subtexts. Such shows imply much more than their surfaces say. A clever director will tease them out even as we go along for a fun ride. Vitale and Smock want us to see that pirates were not mere scallywags who incidentally robbed ships but rather ancestors of the humorless brutes who wrecked the economy in 2008. Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, published in 1883 and serialized in 1881-1882, is the very model of the Boys’ Own Paper adventures and has been adapted countless times. The most memorable is the 1950 Walt Disney version, in which Shakespearean actor Robert Newton introduced the “Arrr-rrrrrr” growl in a mock Cornish accent, not anticipated in the book. Vitale and Smock want us to look at Silver anew as the hired sea cook who betrays his employers. The curved metal panel around his calf nicely implies the peg leg, saving actor Bart Shatto much grief. But gone also is the ambiguity and charm, a possible father figure, that made all the earlier Long Johns so indelible, the inspiration of a chain of seafood restaurants.

The desire to banish Disneyfication is delivered with a vengeance in director Smock’s instructions to scenic designer Czerton Lim and costumer Tristan Raines. No ship. No island. No ocean. All action is staged on a raked disk, possibly meant to imply a gold coin such as a doubloon. The minimal props are augmented by images projected on a kind of Cinerama-curved screen made of sewn-together sheets, possibly discarded sails. No costumes are time-bound. Several characters wear fedoras, a sometime Smock signature, while others are in punkish black leather. The uniform of Captain Smollett (Patrick Oliver Jones) seems more fitting for the Galactic Empire than the British Navy, while the loud plaid shirt adorning Squire John Trelawney (John Paul Almon) might have been worn by a Rotarian in a W.C. Fields movie. All these do indeed draw us away from later Victoriana, but they add to a sense of confusion when bullets fly in the second act. All of this layering of risk upon experiment works very well in the opening scene at the Admiral Benbow Inn. The innkeeper’s son Jim Hawkins (Jimmy Bain) is a perfect youthful hero: intelligent, watchful, fearless. He also has a wonderful Broadway voice as we hear in the duet “Sail” with his mother, Mary (Victoria Huston-Elem), the only female in the cast. An even stronger duet comes at the end with Long John, “Never Seen Good.” The cryptic, nearly cadaverous Billy Bones (Patrick Oliver Jones) tells what we need to know about Captain Flint’s

ill-gotten treasure. One of the delights of the production is the can’t-believe-youreyes double casting when tall, thin actor Jones shows up a few moments later as the regal, saturnine Captain Smollett. Music director Jeff Theiss leads a pit ensemble of eight in the performing of 20 original numbers composed and with lyrics by Corinne Aquilina. As Aquilina and Smock are longtime colleagues we can be sure the score fulfills the playwrights’ intentions, a trenchant critique of greed, with many songs forthright and declamatory. In several numbers director Smock has cast members standing starkly, like the Parisian poor contemplating storming the barricades. The most moving song is the lamenting second-act trio, “Ashes to Ashes,” led by tenor Abraham Gray (Leland Burnett), along with Captain Smollett and Doctor Livesay (Clark Scott Carmichael). The principal comic relief and major scene-stealer is Ben Gunn (Patrick Richwood), the crazed, feral-looking sailor abandoned on the island by an earlier ship. He cannot show up until the second act because Richwood is earlier double-cast as the mutineer O’Brien. Inevitably, Richwood’s Gunn inherits some elements from Caliban in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, also set on an island. Merry-Go-Round’s performance of Treasure Island is not a world premiere. That took place in 2013 at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock, where the artistic director was Robert M. Hupp, whose tenure at Syracuse Stage begins this fall. SNT

GETTING THE ACTS

Diverse dramas and musicals will fill the local floorboards By James MacKillop The two biggest box-office draws of the stage season will be musicals with elements of the supernatural: Famous Artists’ Wicked and the Syracuse Stage-Syracuse University Drama Department co-production of Mary Poppins. We’ll have a record number of new works, unknown titles, and revivals of almost forgotten works like Carlo Gozzi’s King Stag. Many shows court controversy, like The Tomkat Project on the Church of Scientology, or Disgraced, about Islam in America. And zombies will walk the earth in Night of the Living Dead.

Top of the Heap

Two musicals. Two slices of comfort food. And for an element of risk, two Pulitzer Prize winners, one of them a recent controversial Broadway hit. Although this fall marks the beginning of artistic director Robert M. Hupp’s tenure at Syracuse Stage (820 E. Genesee St.; 433-3275), these six selections are legacies of the lessons Timothy Bond learned in his time here. A co-production with Cleveland Playhouse, Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations (Oct. 19-Nov. 6) launches the season. Gale Childs Daly’s adaptation of the sprawling Victorian novel assigns 40 characters to six players. Not a spoof like 39 Steps or Baskerville, Daly’s Expecta-

8

tions respects the integrity of familiar characters like convict Magwitch, the embittered Miss Havisham and the beautiful Estella while charting orphaned Pip’s rise to respectability. In thinking about Mary Poppins (Nov. 26-Jan. 8), the big holiday co-production with SU Drama, the first name to remember is adapter Julian Fellowes, best-known for the PBS series Downton Abbey. He cuts much of the treacle from the 1964 Walt Disney film while retaining most of the musical numbers and adding many more. Living legend choreographer Anthony Salatino and one of the company’s favorite directors, Peter Amster (Baskerville), guarantee satisfaction. Although only 90 minutes long, Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer- and Tony-winning Disgraced (Jan. 25-Feb. 12) will be the most controversial production since Scorched three years ago. Amir Kapour, a deeply assimilated Pakistani-American, affluent and successful with a beautiful American wife, loses it all at an explosive dinner party. This is not an escape from the tensions we live with, but a penetrating look into them. Ain’t Misbehavin’ (March 1-26) revives one of the supreme poets of Tin Pan Alley, Fats Waller. Then it’s back to controversy with Paula Vogel’s 1998 Pulitzer-winning How I Learned to Drive (April 5-23). The girl known as Li’l Bit remembers her potentially hurtful relationship with an older relative and how it changed her. Time has been kind to Ira Levin’s masterwork thriller, Deathtrap (May 10-28). Writers no longer use typewriters, and photocopiers assure us against the destruction of a single manuscript, but the central premise of the play about the perfect

New Syracuse Stage artistic director Robert Hupp.

play remains vital and surprising. A 75-minute drive from Clinton Square, the always innovative Kitchen Theatre Company (417 W. State St., Ithaca; (607) 272-0570) continues to draw Central New Yorkers to professionally produced, cutting-edge shows. Robert Askins’ outrageous Hand to God (Sept. 4-25) depicts the inherent dangers in running a church puppet club in Cypress, Texas. One of them might be possessed by the Devil himself. The original musical Precious Nonsense (Oct. 16-Nov. 6) features a score by Sir Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert, with new lyrics by Kitchen artistic director Rachel Lampert. The first act takes music from little-performed G&S shows to portray a struggling theater company trying to round up a cast for a production

of The Pirates of Penzance. The second act, a truncated version of Pirates, allows for a side-by-side comparison to see how well Lampert did. The rhythm fast-forwards to hip-hop in the British musical, Darian Dauchan’s Death Boogie (Nov. 15-Dec. 4). It’s a solo performance, with multiple characters, about an ordinary office worker who dreams of revolution. The new year begins with the world premiere of Birds of East Africa (Jan. 29-Feb. 12) by Wendy Dann, a company regular. Marion is unprepared to deal with the loss and sudden death of her young husband. The area premiere of Laura Eason’s Sex With a Stranger (March 12-April 2) depicts what happens when a 20-something blogger finds himself waylaid in a remote cabin with a 40-ish mid-career novelist. Eason, from Chicago’s Lookingglass Theater, is also a writer for Netflix’s House of Cards. The revival of Alexander Thomas’ Throw Pitchfork (April 23-May 7) is an autobiographical exploration of masculinity in black America. Finally, Brian Dykstra burst upon the scene in Ithaca 10 years ago with Clean Alternatives (June 4-18), an incisive, hilarious ecological satire. It won acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe; this is a chance to see it again. Generations of Central New Yorkers have been introduced to Broadway glamour through Famous Artists/NAC Enterprises (241 W. Fayette St.; 4248210), the series Murray Bernthal founded after World War II. Four shows run at the Landmark Theatre (362 S. Salina St.). Jersey Boys (Sept. 15-18) timewarps audiences back to the creation of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The prequel to Oz, the box office smash Wicked (March 15-26), will be one of the

biggest local draws of the year. Beautiful (April 18-23) pays tribute to the music of Carole King, while Motown (May 16-21) is all about the Detroit sound. The Mulroy Civic Center’s CrouseHinds Concert Theater (411 Montgomery St.) will host a trio of Famous Artists musicals. Multiple Tony-winner Once (Oct. 18-20) adapts the sleeper Irish film about a street musician. Rent (Nov. 15-17), the update of Puccini’s La Boheme, is on a 20th anniversary tour. Also celebrating 20 years is the high-stepping Irish show Riverdance (Feb. 28-March 2). Artistic director Lawrence Loh will open the 42nd season of Syracuse Opera (411 Montgomery St.; 476-7372) with Gioacchino Rossini’s much-loved but little-seen La Cenerentola or Cinderella (Oct. 28, 30). The Ugly Stepsisters are not to be missed, but the ending is reassuringly realistic. The vengeful dwarf in Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto (Feb. 10, 12) returns to Syracuse for the sixth time. Less often seen but sure to be an audience favorite will be Tchaikovsky’s three-act Eugene Onegin (April 7, 9), sung in Russian. The productions will take place at the Mulroy Civic Center’s Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater (411 Montgomery St.). There are also a few shows left in the pipeline from Auburn’s Merry-GoRound Playhouse (Emerson Park, 6877 East Lake Road (Route 38A); 255-1785, (800) 457-8897). The season continues with homages to Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis as the Million Dollar Quartet (Sept. 15-Oct. 1), the Rosemary Clooney musical salute Tenderly (Oct. 5-19) and the jazzy review Smokey Joe’s Cafe (Nov. 2-19).

Show Stoppers

Press releases from the Redhouse Arts Center (201 S. West St.; 4250405) assure us that despite the abrupt midsummer departure of the previous producing artistic director, Stephen Svoboda, we can expect completion of the company’s announced plans. The move to Redhouse@City Center (formerly the Sibley’s department store on South Salina Street) will continue. Familiar faces including Laura Austin, John Bixler, Bell Wells and Aubry Panek will still be seen. And many items from the ambitious and diverse schedule announced in early summer will be completed. First up is the R-rated, Tony-winning puppet musical Avenue Q (Sept. 15-Oct. 1). A recent college graduate named Princeton finds that life has not worked out the way Sesame Street had promised in childhood. Entirely G-rated is one of the most successful of all Alan Menken-Howard Ashman Disney adaptations, Beauty and the Beast (Dec. 1-17), the 2003 Tony winner. Hillside Family of

Agencies will partner for this production. Ron Ruggiero’s review, Make Me a Song: The Music of William Finn (Jan. 19-28), will be seen only in the small, upstairs Lab Theater. Syracuse native Marissa Mulder will return to the main stage for her review, Forever My Friend: The Songs of Ray LaMontagne (March 9-18). The witty and brilliant Six Degrees of Separation (March 9-19) is John Guare’s greatest play, exposing hypocrisies of race and class. A smooth con man wheedles his way into the household of a privileged family by pretending to be the son of black actor Sidney Poitier. And the repertory productions of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and The Bomb-itty of Errors (May 4-20) continues a Svoboda-era tradition. Two works are performed with largely the same cast, on mostly the same set, inviting the audience to see how one work interrogates the secrets of the other. Both are deconstructions of the Bard’s texts, Bomb-itty with a rap beat. Artistic director Dustin Czarny’s Central New York Playhouse (Shoppingtown Mall; 885-8960) boasts a 4,500-square-foot theater space that will field the most diverse offerings of anybody: Sondheim and punk rock, the Bard and the dead, as well as original works by local playwrights. This fall brings Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution (Sept. 16-Oct. 1), followed by a staged version of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (Oct. 21-Nov. 5). The highlight of the fall will be the premiere of Len Fonte’s Melagrana (Nov. 11-19), about an American woman’s misadventures in Sicily. Audiences for workshop productions with Armory Square Players have been highly enthusiastic. For the holidays it will be a fully staged version of Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life (Dec. 2-17), not a one-man recreation or a spoof. In the winter slot, the playhouse will present the celebrated board game Clue (Jan. 13-28), followed by Sarah Ruhl’s offbeat Eurydice (Feb. 10-18), a new realization of the ancient myth, and John Steinbeck’s realist classic Of Mice and Men (March 10-25). The revival of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple (April 14-29), once the most visible of stage comedies, was voted by current patrons as the production they’d most like to see from the company’s previous incarnation as Not Another Theater Company, which ran from 2009 to 2012 at the Locker Room on Hiawatha Boulevard. Also on the slate: Shakespeare’s tragic moor Othello (May 12-20) and what Czarny says will be the blowout of the season, John Kander and Fred Ebb’s Chicago (June 16-July 1). The company has been struggling to get the rights at its inception and will pull out the stops with this one. Now in its 12th year, Dan Tursi’s always adventuresome Rarely Done

Productions (performances at Jazz Central, 441 E. Washington St.; 546-3224) has released the titles for four productions at press time, with two more still in negotiation. Del Shores’ Sordid Lives (Oct. 7-22), a black comedy about white trash, features three generations of a Texas family gathering for a funeral where we learn some sad truths. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Tell Me on A Sunday (Nov. 4-19) features Erin Williamson Sills as an English girl journeying across America in search of love and adventure. Jamie Morris, author of The Facts of Life: The Lost Episodes, pays raunchy homage to a landmark 1991 movie thriller in The Silence of the Clams (Feb. 10-18). In what promises to be one of the season’s most controversial productions, Brandon Ogborn’s The Tomkat Project (Feb. 24-March 11) employs actual interviews to disclaim the marriage of Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and the Church of Scientology; her first divorce, his third. Finally, Sara Weiler and Paul Thompson will portray the two lovers in Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years (April 21-May 6), the musical deconstruction of a love affair and marriage over a fiveyear period.

Favorite Faces

Baldwinsville Theatre Guild (performances at the Presbyterian Educational Center, 64 Oswego Road, Baldwinsville), the area’s longest-running community theater group, will finish outlining

its 75th season in mid-September, but two dates are certain now. William Edward White will direct Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man (Sept. 23-Oct. 8), based on the life of grotesquely deformed John Merrick of Victorian England, and unrelated to David Lynch’s 1980 on the same subject with the same title. And Henry Wilson will stage a revival of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man (Jan. 27-Feb. 11). Now in its 57th year, Jack Skillman’s dinner theater company Onondaga Hillplayers (673-2255) continues to thrive at the Marcellus Golf Club (formerly the Links at Sunset Ridge), 2814 W. Seneca Turnpike, Marcellus. This year offers Neil Simon’s California Suite (Oct. 28-Nov. 6), with veteran director Robert “Tank” Steingraber in charge of the antics. While much in evidence in Thornden Park during the summer, when the Syracuse Shakespeare Festival (476-1835) comes indoors, it chooses different roots. Although details were sketchy at press time, veteran director Judith Harris will helm Mark St. Germain’s Freud’s Last Session (Dec. 2-4), about the great psychologist’s encounter with Christian apologist C. S. Lewis, at the Community Foundation Ballroom, 431 E. Fayette St. Other productions take place at the Cantor Warehouse Theater, 350 W. Fayette St., including the Marx Brothers musical Animal Crackers (Feb. 10-19) and Cormac McCarthy’s Sunset Limited (April 1-9), with Tony Brown directing.

Young at Heart

At the Syracuse University Drama Department (820 E. Genesee St.; 4433275), faculty directors fight any impulse for group think, and each one points the company in a different direction. Anthony Salatino points toward famed Italian director Federico Fellini for a production of Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston’s Nine (Sept. 30-Oct. 8), a musical version of the master’s classic film 8 1/2, to be performed in the Archbold Theatre. New faculty member Katherine McGerr will introduce us to Laura and the Sea (Nov. 4-13), a new comedy about depression and a meditation on human connection in the digital age, which involves a top travel agent who never leaves the office. Next comes Mary Poppins (Nov. 26-Jan. 8), the aforementioned co-production with Syracuse Stage. Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806), one of the ultimate champions of commedia del’arte, might be unfamiliar to many playgoers but is hardly unknown. Broadway director Julie Taymor’s revival of Gozzi’s Stag King (Feb. 17-26) helped to launch her career. Felix Ivanov directs here. The best-known title of the season is Major Barbara (March 31-April 9), one of George Bernard Shaw’s most enduring social comedies. Undershaft the arms manufacturer battles the Salvation Army for men and women’s souls, under Gerardine Clark’s direction. Finally, experienced song and dance man David Lowenstein will bring us Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill (May 5-13).

How many people realize that the man who wrote “Mack the Knife” also wrote “September Song”? Performances from Le Moyne College’s Boot and Buskin Drama Club (1419 Salt Springs Road; 445-4523) take place at the state-of-the-art facility of the W. Carroll Coyne Center for the Performing Arts. Professor Matt Chiorini, one of the most skilled directors in the area, is jolting the company in an entirely different direction. He made his mark here with literary modernism, like Eugene Ionesco, Federico Garcia Lorca and Mikhail Bulgakov, but this season the fare is more what might be called broad market. Heathers: The Musical (Feb. 16-25) is a recent off-Broadway hit based on the landmark 1989 film with a young, bitchy Winona Rider. Marc Camoletti’s Boeing, Boeing (March 16-25) is a classic French sex farce, with successions of slamming doors, each one revealing a stewardess from a different nation. Once flattened into a Jerry Lewis movie, it was restored to glory by Mark Rylance in the last decade. SNT

HANGING OUT

Area galleries promise diverse showcases that will challenge viewers By Carl Mellor The autumn slate of local exhibits is all over the map. There are shows that focus on disparate figures such as rock star David Bowie and cartoonist Edward Koren, exhibits that concentrate on a single medium such as quilts or prints or cups, and a recounting of a trip taken on New York state waters. And the range of shows expands with solo exhibitions for L.J. Bigness and Jim Ridlon and a display of early works by Ansel Adams. A selection of new works by Angela Fraleigh opens Sept. 24 at the Everson Museum of Art (401 Harrison St.; 4746064). Her new paintings are inspired by pieces in the museum’s collection, by women prominent in the Arts and Crafts movement and various social movements. Expect, for example, a painting depicting Lucretia Mott, an abolitionist and women’s rights pioneer. Tide and Current Taxi, also opening Sept. 24, uses multiple media to document Marie Lorenz’s travels along the Erie Canal and Hudson River this summer. Unique, also at the Everson, celebrates the artistic talents of Central New Yorkers living with disabilities. This juried show, featuring artworks and literature, is coordinated by Arise, a local non-profit group. It closes Sept. 25.

The Urban Video Project, affiliated with Light Work Gallery, Syracuse University and the Everson, has planned a Friday, Sept. 2, event at the museum that begins with an arts fair from 7 to 8 p.m., then swings into an outdoor showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on the museum’s north façade. Starting Sept. 15, Fireworks by Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul will appear on the outside museum wall three nights a week. At the Community Folk Art Center (805 E. Genesee St.; 442-2230), Two Sides of James Ransome opens Sept. 13. A reception will be held Sept. 29, 6 to 8 p.m. The gallery at the Syracuse Tech Garden (235 Harrison St.; thetechgarden.com) is preparing We Can Be Heroes: Visualizing the Music and Life of David Bowie, a show with a broad agenda. It’s open to portraits of Bowie, to artworks interpreting a song or his legacy. There will be an opening reception on Sept. 22, 5 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit runs through Dec. 2. Another downtown venue, Tyler Art Gallery at SUNY Oswego’s Metro Center (2 Clinton Square; 399-4100), hosts Urban Beat, featuring works in encaustic and oil by L.J. Bigness. She has displayed her work locally and at galleries in Rochester and other cities. Bigness will be feted at a reception on Thursday, Sept. 1, 5:30 p.m.

Urban Beat wraps Oct. 22. The Onondaga Historical Association (321 Montgomery St.; 428-1864) is displaying Art Makes Cents, historic artworks and coin banks from the collection of M&T Bank, through Dec. 31. ArtRage Gallery (505 Hawley Ave.; 218-5711) will present Finding Your Power from Sept. 10 to Nov. 12. The show features paintings by Robert Shetterley, whose portraits depict activists concerned with peace and war, or social justice. They include Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil rights advocate in 1960s Mississippi; Oren Lyons, Onondaga faithkeeper; and Ray McGovern, a longtime CIA analyst turned anti-war demonstrator. The gallery has scheduled several events connected to the exhibit: a Sept. 10 reception at 7 p.m.; a talk with McGovern on Sept. 11, 2 p.m.; and Shetterley discusses his work on Sept. 14, 7 p.m. Edgewood Gallery (216 Tecumseh Road; 445-8111) is currently displaying Mixed Media through Sept. 23, featuring Terry McMaster’s abstract works, ceramics by Amy Komar and Sheila Roock, Clare Willson’s wall pieces and Arlene Abend’s sculptural pendants. That show will be followed by the Sept. 30 premiere of Diversity, which features Donna Smith’s jewelry and various artworks created by Jim Ridlon, who will be showing prints, paintings, assemblages and wood sculptures. Associated Artists has scheduled a Sept. 10 opening for its annual juried exhibition

at the Manlius Public Library (1 Arkie Albanese Ave.; 682-6400), with a Sept. 18 reception from 2 to 4 p.m. The Almighty Cup, a juried show whose participants come from around the country, begins a six-week run on Oct. 1 at the Gandee Gallery (7846 Main St., Fabius; 416-6339). The exhibit focuses on cups as objects of art. The Schweinfurth Art Center (205 Genesee St., Auburn; 255-1553) has a busy fall schedule. Emerging Artists of Central New York displays works by Rebecca Alosio, Madeline Bartley, Awenheeyoh Powless and Eeva Siivonen. The quartet will be recognized at a Sept. 2 reception which begins at 5 p.m. Then on Oct. 29 the gallery opens its signature show Quilts = Arts = Quilts, an international juried exhibition. On the Syracuse University campus, Light Work Gallery (316 Waverly Ave.; 443-1300) has just opened two exhibitions. A Place Called Home hangs pieces by Todd Gray, who lives and works in Los Angeles and Ghana. He combines and layers images from a diverse portfolio: photos of gang members in LA, documentary photos taken in Ghana, portraits of Michael Jackson, and more. Also on display is a group exhibition of photos by Central New York artists Marion Wilson, Robert Knight and Lida Suchy, who are winners of the 2016 Light Work grant awards. A reception takes place on Oct. 7, 5 to 7 p.m. Both shows run through Oct. 22.

FALL MUSIC SCHEDULES BOAST A WIDE VARIETY OF GENRES By Jessica Novak

T

he autumn music lineup in Central New York will command an impressive array of artists. From classic rock legends Steely Dan to modern songwriters Josh Ritter and Jason Isbell, the coming months promise plenty of live music for hungry ears. Here’s a rundown:

The Revivalists. This seven-piece New Orleansbased outfit channels their big band sound with ease. Songs are poppy but intelligent, full of vocal and instrumental hooks at every turn. Lead singer David Shaw has a voice that hits everything from Led Zeppelin to funky soul, while their 2015 album Men Amongst Mountains led Rolling Stone magazine to hail them as of the “10 Best Bands You Need to Know” in 2016. See them Sept. 13 at the Westcott Theater, 524 Westcott St. (299-8886; Thewestcotttheater.com). Tickets are $20. Jason Isbell and Josh Ritter. Both modern minstrels are currently operating as some of the biggest buzz words in songwriting. Ritter, labeled one of the “100 Greatest Living Songwriters” by Paste magazine, hits with narrative songs like “Kathleen,” which tell specific stories, and yet somehow they speak universally. Isbell, a member of Drive-By Truckers from 2001 to 2007, performs songs that will break anybody’s heart, and yet you can’t help but listen again and again. Isbell is married to singer-songwriter and violinist Amanda Shires, who often performs with him. They have a baby girl, Mercy Rose, and the home relationship makes it to the stage as he talks about the inspiration for songs like “Cover Me Up” — the woman standing next to him. The two performers can make any major stage feel like a living room with their intimate songs. Isbell and 8.31.16 - 9.6.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Ritter perform Oct. 6 at the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St. (475-7980). Tickets run $25 to $45. Steely Dan. Known for their perfectionism in the studio and their complex mixture of jazz, rock, funk and pop, Steely Dan is musical royalty. The group, formed in 1972 with core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen at the helm, toured from 1972 until 1974, but became a strictly studio band after that. Their songs, known for their jazz-influenced structure and thick use of harmonies, also made for albums with as many as 42 studio musicians and 11 engineers (1980’s Gaucho). The band parted in 1981, but their popularity never waned. They reunited in 1993 and have since released two albums of new material, plus they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Steely Dan performs Oct. 9 at the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St. (475-7980). Tickets run $45 to $121. The Reign of Kindo. Originally from Buffalo but now residing in New York City, this band formed in late 2006 and released their first EP in 2007. In 2008, they released Rhythm, Chord and Melody, with key songs like “Let It Go” branding them as an unusually jazzy indie rock band. With lyrics you need to pay attention to (“Breathe Again” might be about killing Santa Claus) over softly swaying songs, this band is more deceiving than they appear. They released two more albums in 2010 and 2013 and their 2009 video

of “Just Wait” became one of the most highly rated and commented-on videos in the YouTube music category. This band is for people who want something refreshingly different from the typical indie pop pack. See them Oct. 21 at the Westcott Theater, 524 Westcott St. (299-8886; Thewestcotttheater.com). Tickets are $15. Center for the Arts. (72 S. Main St., Homer; (607) 749-4900; Center4art. org). The fall schedule at this 450-seat theater offers solo acoustic, bluegrass, cabaret, Americana, jazz, klezmer music and more. Familiar acts include Slaid Cleaves (Sept. 30), who visits Central New York regularly, and Charlie Bertini and the AppleJazz Band (Oct. 15), founded locally 32 years ago. Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band (Nov. 17) will return and unusual groups like Vaud and the Villians (Sept. 22) will bring their “traveling medicine show” of church, get down and circus to audiences. Known for its excellent acoustics, the Homer venue is bringing one of the most exciting seasons around. Tickets range from $18 to $38. Folkus Project. (performances at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 E. Genesee St.; folkus. org). Staying ever true to their acoustic roots, this series celebrates the powers of folk music and storytelling. Happy Traum kicks it off Sept. 23 with a mix of narrative and music and Guy Davis wraps it up with deep blues on Dec. 16. The Acoustic Guitar Project will visit on Nov. 18, bringing five local singer-songwriters to the stage using a special guitar that’s gone around among some of the best players in the area. Other players include Molly Tuttle, Rod Picott, Robin and Linda Williams, Cliff Eberhart with Louise Mosrie and more. Tickets range from $15 to $20. Symphoria. (performances at the Mulroy Civic Center’s Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater, 421 Montgomery St.; 299-5598; experiencesymphoria.org). Symphoria stretches to include all types of orchestral music this season. From a Sept. 10 performance of Rachmaninoff’s “Third Piano Concerto,” called the most demanding of all Romantic concertos, to Ann Hampton Callaway’s Sept. 24 interpretation of Barbra Streisand’s repertoire, to an Oct. 29 Halloween “Spooktacular” at Inspiration Hall, 709 James St., Symphoria is working harder than ever to speak to many audiences through the art form. Tickets range from $5 to $81. SNT

its early stages. If you take action soon, you can prevent a full-scale decomposition. But be forewarned: Things could get messy, especially if you intervene with the relentless candor and clarity that will be required for medicinal purification. So what do you think? Are you up for the struggle? I understand if you’re not. I’ll forgive you if you simply flee. But if you decide to work your cagey magic, here are some tips. 1. Compile your evidence with rigor. 2. As much as is humanly possible, put aside rancor. Root your efforts in compassionate objectivity. 3. Even as you dig around in the unsightly facts, cherish the beautiful truths you’d like to replace them with.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Are you willing to lose at least some of your inhibitions? Are you curious to find out what it feels like to cavort like a wise wild child? If you want to fully cooperate with life’s plans, you will need to consider those courses of action. I am hoping that you’ll accept the dare, of course. I suspect you will thrive as you explore the pleasures of playful audacity and whimsical courage and effervescent experiments. So be blithe, Taurus! Be exuberant! Be open to the hypothesis that opening to jaunty and jovial possibilities is the single most intelligent thing you can do right now.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) What’s the current status of your relationship with your feet? Have you been cultivating and cherishing your connection with the earth below you? The reason I ask, Gemini, is that right now it’s especially important for you to enjoy intimacy with gravity, roots and foundations. Whatever leads you down and deeper will be a source of good fortune. Feeling grounded will provide you with an aptitude for practical magic. Consider the possibilities of going barefoot, getting a foot massage, or buying new shoes that are both beautiful and comfortable. CANCER (June 21-July 22) A woman in the

final stages of giving birth may experience acute discomfort. But once her infant spills out into the world, her distress can transform into bliss. I don’t foresee quite so dramatic a shift for you, Cancerian. But the transition you undergo could have similar elements: from uncertainty to grace; from agitation to relief; from constriction to spaciousness. To take maximum advantage of this blessing, don’t hold onto the state you’re leaving behind -- or the feelings it aroused in you.

last night, a Leo sensualist I know advised me to take smart pills and eat an entire chocolate cheesecake before writing my next Leo horoscope. In another dream, my Leo friend Erica suggested that I compose your horoscope while attending an orgy where all the participants were brilliant physicists, musicians and poets. In a third dream, my old teacher Rudolf (also a Leo) said I should create the Leo horoscope as I sunbathed on a beach in Maui while being massaged by two sexy geniuses. Here’s how I interpret my dreams: In the coming days, you can literally increase your intelligence by indulging in luxurious comforts and sensory delights.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Play a joke on your nervous anxiety. Leap off the ground or whirl in a circle five times as you shout, “I am made of love!” Learn the words and melody to a new song that lifts your mood whenever you sing it. Visualize yourself going on an adventure that will amplify your courage and surprise your heart. Make a bold promise to yourself, and acquire an evocative object that will symbolize your intention to fulfill that promise. Ask yourself a soul-shaking question you haven’t been wise enough to investigate before now. Go to a wide-open space, spread your arms out in a greeting to the sky, and pray for a vision of your next big goal.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The Illuminati do

not want you to receive the prophecy I have prepared for you. Nor do the Overlords of the New World Order, the Church of the SubGenius, the Fake God that masquerades as the Real God, or the nagging little voice in the back of your head. So why am I going ahead and divulging this oracle anyway? Because I love you. My loyalty is to you, not those shadowy powers. Therefore, I am pleased to inform you that the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to evade, ignore, undermine or rebel against controlling influences that aren’t in alignment with your soul’s goals.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) The dictionary says that the verb “to schmooze” means to chat with people in order to promote oneself or make a social connection that may prove to be advantageous. But that definition puts a selfish spin on an activity that can, at least sometimes, be carried out with artful integrity. Your assignment in the coming weeks is to perform this noble version of schmoozing. If you are offering a product or service that is beautiful or useful or both, I hope you will boost its presence and influence with the power of your good listening skills and smart conversations. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) If you are attuned with the cosmic rhythms in the coming weeks, you will be a source of teaching and leadership. Allies will feel fertilized by your creative vigor. You’ll stimulate team spirit with your savvy appeals to group solidarity. If anyone can revive droopy procrastinators and demonstrate the catalytic power of gratitude, it’ll be you. Have you heard enough good news, Sagittarius, or can you absorb more? I expect that you’ll inspire interesting expressions of harmony that will replace contrived versions of togetherness. And every blessing you bestow will expand your capacity for attracting favors you can really use. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The fictional character known as Superman has one prominent vulnerability: the mineral kryptonite. When he’s near this stuff, it weakens his superpowers and may cause other problems. I think we all have our own versions of kryptonite, even if they’re metaphorical. For instance, my own superpowers tend to decline when I come into the presence of bad architecture, cheesy poetry and off-pitch singing. How about you, Capricorn? What’s your version of kryptonite? Whatever it is, I’m happy to let you know that you are currently less susceptible to its debilitating influences than usual. Why? Well, you have a sixth sense about how to avoid it. And even if it does draw near, you have in your repertoire some new tricks to keep it from sapping your strength. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) It’s quite possible you will receive seductive proposals in the coming weeks. You may also be invited to join your fortunes with potential collaborators who have almost fully awakened to your charms. I won’t be surprised if you receive requests to share your talents, offer your advice or bestow your largesse. You’re a hot prospect, my dear. You’re an attractive candidate. You appear to be ripe for the plucking. How should you respond? My advice is to be flattered and gratified, but also discerning. Just because an inquiry is exciting doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Choose carefully.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Would you like to

become a master of intimacy? Can you imagine yourself handling the challenges of togetherness with the skill of a great artist and the wisdom of a love genius? If that prospect appeals to you, now would be a favorable time to up your game. Here’s a hot tip on how to proceed: You must cultivate two seemingly contradictory skills. The first is the capacity to identify and nurture the best qualities in your beloved friend. The second is the ability to thrive on the fact that healthy relationships require you to periodically wrestle with each other’s ignorance and immaturity.
