CENTRAL NEW YORK WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! It has been 17 years since 9/11. Nearly 3,000 people were killed and more than 6,000 were injured in the United States after coordinated attacks by terrorist group al-Qaeda. The reverberations are still felt today, as many still suffer from cancer and respiratory-related illnesses from serving near the area. Agencies around the country also hold memorial services to honor those that died and first-responders at Ground Zero in New York City. To honor the day, the Syracuse New Times asks readers to recall that Tuesday in 2001, and if any of them have special memorial traditions of their own. Jazz singer Nancy Kelly. THINGS THAT MATTER B y L u k e Pa r s n o w

EMPIRE STATE NEEDS UPDATED VOTING LAWS Planning to vote in New York’s primary elections on Thursday, Sept. 13? If you want to change your party affiliation to vote for a certain candidate, you are out of luck. In order to change your status to a Republican, Democrat or any other party member so you can vote in the Sept. 13 primaries in New York, you had to submit that change a very long time ago: The deadline was Oct. 13, 2017! You had to change your party affiliation for the 2018 election before even last year’s general election took place. That’s even earlier than the deadline that presidential candidates have to meet to formally appear on the state ballot every four years. It’s not the only ludicrous voting law on the state’s books. And primary season is

a good time to remind our government leaders that the state’s current voting laws are insane, antiquated, undemocratic and in desperate need of an overhaul. New York still does not have early voting, which is something more than 30 states already take part in, including the populus states of California, Texas and Florida. It also does not have automatic voter registration, another practice many states across the country have had for years. We’ve been discussing the need for voting reforms for quite some time, especially in the wake of the last two federal elections, when voters are most energized. Yet New York still had a dismal voter turnout rate. During the contentious 2016 election, the state had the sixthworst turnout rate in the nation. In 2014,

which was the last time the governor’s seat was on the ballot, New York had the fourth-worst turnout rate. It was also the state’s worst turnout since the beginning of World War II. People aren’t voting because the state makes it too difficult to vote, even though we’ve had common-sense voting reform bills at our doorstep numerous times. New York’s party re-registration time gap needs to be shortened considerably. Several past proposals would allow voters to change party affiliation up to 25 days before a primary election if done by mail, or up to 10 days if delivered by hand. Early voting should also be allowed by the state. Early voting does not just benefit busy people. It also benefits the elderly, the ill and disabled, giving them extra room to exercise their right amid an uncertain schedule or mobility. New York has a confusing primary election schedule, with those for federal offices held in late June and all others in September. That schedule would make early voting even more desirable, especially this year given that the September primaries were moved from the traditional first Tuesday of the month to a Thursday. The state should also be responsible

style

for registering voters. In Oregon, anyone with a driver’s license is automatically registered to vote unless they opt out. New York bills have even proposed that voters can be automatically registered at any state or local agency that collects identity information from an eligible person, not just the DMV. It should also be up to the state and local boards of elections to update voter information as needed, should they move and submit a change-of-address form. Currently, any registered New Yorkers are automatically deregistered if they move to a different county. With the ability of instant communication that we have in this day and age, we can do better than that. Thursday’s primaries will likely see a very low voter turnout because we force people to jump through ridiculous hoops just to exercise their right. State lawmakers also like to keep voter turnout low, because there will be fewer people to show up to vote for someone else. That may be something to consider when you walk into a polling place on Thursday or later on Nov. 6, Election Day. Don’t just vote: Vote for voting, too. SNT

HOT DOGGIN’ WITH WAYNE MAHAR’S CANINE CARNIVAL

I

f you’re a longtime Central New Yorker, then you know longtime meteorologist Wayne Mahar. The former Maine resident came to WSTM-Channel 3 in January 1985 when weatherguy and ventriloquist Dennis Bowman left the market, and he’s been a local TV fixture ever since. Mahar also runs his Precision Weather Service business, with weather forecasts for clients that have included radio stations, school districts, ski resorts and even the Academy Awards, although he has been unable to predict any Oscar winners. And for one day every summer, Mahar is the host of Wayne’s Canine Carnival, one of the country’s largest animal rescue events. The next edition takes place on Saturday, Sept. 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Jamesville Beach Park, 3992 Apulia Road, Jamesville. The free event features hundreds of animals for adoption, plus music, food, animal demonstrations, pet grooming, horse carriage rides and a Red Cross blood drive. Mahar started the carnival in 2010 as a tribute to his late mother. “We were both big animal lovers,” Mahar recalls. “It was only my mom and I growing up. My first dog was named Super. We always had a dog, and usually a dog and cat. The pet was her only companionship for many years. Many adults, especially seniors, have pets as their sole companionship.” The nomadic event has grown in size and popularity over the years. It started at the Wegmans Good Dog Park in Onondaga Lake Park for a two-year run, then had to relocate to a bigger venue at Longbranch Park for two years. “Then we had to move again,” Mahar says, “because we got too big.” The carnival’s Jamesville spot, where it has been going strong since 2014, seems to be its permanent home, however. Permanent homes have also been found for scores of pets. “In our first year we had 18 rescues and 13 vendors, with an estimated 1,500 people in attendance,” Mahar notes. “Over the past few years we’ve averaged 50 rescues from as far away as the Carolinas, with 70 to 75 vendors and 15,000 to 20,000 attending.” Central New York’s hot summers over

the last decade have been an obstacle for the carnival, however, with the ironically titled dog days proving too much to bear for the pets, which meant changing the event’s date. “August was sometimes too hot, too humid and had thunderstorms threatening,” Mahar says. “The bottom line was that it was bad for both humans and animals. Two years ago the emergency vet tent was overflowing with animals from heat and humidity, and a few humans were having heat issues as well. When we moved the carnival to September last year, not one animal or human was in our emergency tents. Not one!” Carnival-goers have also responded to the event’s request for donations. Proceeds from the Canine Carnival go to the Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation, a nonprofit donating money to local animal rescues and organizations. Mahar says that the carnival’s total donations toward Central New York’s animal rescues and welfares have reached $230,000. “And it’s impossible to give a number on how many dogs, cats, horses and other varied animals have been adopted into forever homes,” Mahar adds, “but it’s safe to say hundreds, at the least.” Mahar also practices what he preaches, with three dogs in his household. “They are all Havanese and my wife competes with them in obedience and agility trials,” Mahar says. “Their names are Eli, Rudy and Gabby.” SNT

MURDER MOST FUN IN LIVELY CHRISTIE REVIVAL There’ll be none of that “Shh-shh, don’t tell” business. Under Dan Stevens’ direction, the cast of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap (through Sept. 22 at Central New York Playhouse) dispenses with the post-curtain admonition that we not give away the identity of the culprit in the still-startling twist ending. As the drama opened in London nearly 66 years ago and has run through more than 25,000 performances, nearly everybody knows whodunit going in. No matter. Knowing who the killer is in director Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho does not stop people from watching it again. There are so many other things to amuse us along the way. Dame Agatha was nearing 62 and at the height of her powers when The Mousetrap opened in 1952. Her gift for plotting had long since proven adaptable for the stage, as she knew from Ten Little Indians, originally a novel. In The Mousetrap she abbreviates the number of suspects to a more manageable five (or maybe seven). And she becomes more of an actor’s friend, giving performers more strutting to do than was required of characters lifted off the page. Most Christie characters are suspicious, probably hiding something, but in The Mousetrap several characters are nearly walking vaudeville acts, just in the exposition.

9.12.18 - 9.18.18 | syracusenew times.com

Jennie Russo, Keith Arlington and Alyssa Otoski-Keim in Central New York Playhouse’s The Mousetrap. Amelia Beamish photo

The setting is Monkswell Manor, a guesthouse in Berkshire (pronounced “BARK-shur”), newly open for business. The wife and husband team of Mollie (Jennie Russo) and Giles Ralston (Jack Carr) are running the place themselves. With post-war austerity still in place, they suffer from rationing and there’s not enough money to hire extra help. That also means no maids or butlers to eavesdrop, tightening the action. Because of heavy snow, the roads have become impassable and somehow (wait for it), the telephone line is down. In a teasing opening scene, a vintage Bakelite radio announces that a woman in London has been murdered and a man seen fleeing from the scene is dressed a bit like, ahem, Giles. The husband and wife are initially seen as bland as possible, but we learn that they have been married only a year, with some questions about what they might have been doing before that. Director Stevens has prudently cast two players beyond the bloom of youth in these roles. Jennie Russo, in many ways the center of the action, skillfully plays Mollie as a person capable of holding secrets. Then the guests arrive, including the sourpuss reactionary Mrs. Boyle (Nora O’Dea), whose non-stop kvetching mentions dry rot, the labor shortage, the weekly rent (a steal at 70 guineas), and the lack of responsibility among the lower social orders. O’Dea, the director’s wife, has graciously taken on this rebarbative harpy, and their rehearsals at home must have been fun. Retired Major Metcalf (Keith Arlington) comes with better manners, but his shifty eyes do quite a bit of talking. Two younger characters are more ambiguous: the hyper-neurotic Christopher Wren (Strange David Fuller) and the

severe, mannish Miss Casewell (Alyssa Otoski-Keim). Three years after Obergefell vs. Hodges we immediately identify the two as gay, for which one could be jailed in 1952 Britain. The script gives Christopher more to do, and actor Fuller makes him a fey peacock of flamboyant neuroses. Alyssa Otoski-Keim, seen last year as the scantily clad adulteress Vicki in Noises Off, has more fun with Miss Casewell than have previous community theater actresses. She has something of the audacious androgyny of Marlene Dietrich in trousers, enjoying putting on the straights. Blessedly the script bumps off vexatious Mrs. Boyle before the first act’s curtain, which brings in forthright, self-confident Sergeant Trotter (Stephen Shepherd) to launch the second. He never pretends to having superior insight like Hercule Poirot, but in a methodical way he provides important missing exposition. The aforementioned London murder is linked to the one in the first act, and the killer could well be looking for a third victim in Monkswell Manor this very night. The most experienced member of the cast, Simon Moody, presents a different Mr. Paravacini than has been seen in a dozen earlier productions. Paravacini is the stranger who arrives at the guesthouse claiming his car overturned in the snow. Picking up on the Italian name, other actors have made him florid and operatic. Moody (also in charge of costumes) makes him tweedy and wry, delighting in holding some unspoken secret. Although Christie’s lines do not assign him any bon mots, Moody’s eyes depict him looking as though he’s just about to say something wonderfully funny. SNT

NANCY KELLY

Michael Davis photo

The acclaimed singer will be honored during this weekend’s Jazz-N-Caz event

N

BY J.T. HALL

ancy Kelly has been a dominant figure on the Central New York jazz scene for more than 40 years. Trained first as a pianist and later as a vocalist at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, Kelly’s innate sense of phrasing and swing has earned widespread accolades including “Best Female Jazz Vocalist” in Downbeat magazine’s readers poll twice. Kelly’s first CD Live Jazz reached No. 11 on the Billboard charts, and her fifth, B That Way, spent eight weeks in the Top 50 on the Jazzweek charts. A frequent performer at the leading jazz venues in New York City, Kelly has also toured in Europe, Japan and Asia. Kelly’s new CD Remembering Mark Murphy, a tribute to the late Fulton jazz singer, will be released Oct. 31. Kelly will appear during the 17th annual Jazz-N-Caz event on Saturday, Sept. 15, 7:30 p.m., at Cazenovia College’s Catherine Cummings Theatre with the all-female Diva Orchestra, where she will receive the 2018 Jazz-N-Caz Award for her contributions to the local jazz community, joining previous recipients broadcaster Leo Rayhill, musician and promoter Larry Luttinger, and vocalist Ronnie Leigh. For Jazz-N-Caz information, visit Cazenovia.edu.

Kelly spoke to the Syracuse New Times recently in her studio at Subcat Music Studios.

In addition to being a singer you are also a vocal teacher. How do you teach jazz singing? My focus is on technique, teaching someone how to implement sounds correctly. We’re very heavy on how to use the instrument correctly before we even look at music. Maybe three or four of my 30 students are interested in jazz. I use the Great American Songbook — America’s classical music — because of how well written it is. I discourage pop (music) because then they want to copy somebody. It’s good to give them pieces that they aren’t familiar with.

When and how did you become interested in singing jazz? I’m a classically trained pianist, somewhat of a virtuoso. But The Beatles came out and I gave it all away and wanted a guitar. Then I headed a rock band. I wanted to learn and do more stimulating things that were intellectually and spiritually advanced. I went from rock to rhythm’n’blues and then to a jazzy horn band and then I found jazz.

Who were your early influences? Louis Armstrong. Count Basie. James Brown for the rhythm. Aretha Franklin for the swing. Billie (Holiday) for the lyrical, emotive singing and sincerity. There’s something that you learn from each person you study.

How would you describe your style of singing? I’m a very lyrical singer, very sincere, very emotional. Technically, swing is my main thing, something I’m noted for. As of late I’ve gotten into more bebop, which alienates you. No one really wants to hear bebop except other jazz musicians.

What does it take to be a jazz singer as opposed to some other genre of music? Jazz is not something you rehearse. It’s a study. You take a standard, and this becomes the subject that band is now going to discuss musically. Where a jazz singer is different from other singers, we are also in on that conversation. We call it spontaneous creation. I’m also very interested in stories: creating a movie in the listener’s head.

Today’s vocal styles favor high volume, high-register sustained notes and lots of melisma. What’s your reaction to that? A circus act. It’s reality TV, but it’s not reality. Good singers don’t behave that way. An audience loves it when you holler. The big ending. It’s something I stopped doing. Audiences want something they’re familiar with or is like an adrenalin rush.

What’s your view of the local climate for jazz musicians? I enjoy doing some local events with a built-in jazz crowd, but I don’t do as much of that as I used to. You would have to ask someone who’s in the scene.

There are local events billed as jazz that are really rhythm’n’blues or blues. What’s your reaction to that? Well, jazz is a fun word. It’s actually one of my pet peeves. People use the

word jazz much too loosely. I never called myself a jazz singer until a virtuoso jazz artist, Joe Santora, said I was.

Are there any events that stand out among your past performances? There’s a lot of them. One of the really fun things that I did recently was I brought in my old friend Joey DeFrancesco at the Fulton Jazz Fest maybe four years ago. My recent tour of Asia was really great. Going to Hong Kong, Jakarta, Bangkok, Thailand. The audiences in Asia adore jazz.

You’re going to play Jazz-N-Caz with the all-woman Diva Orchestra. How do you feel about that? I think it’s great. I’ve known (bandleader) Sherri Maricle for many years. I don’t think there’s any hidden meaning there. I think it’s a great idea. It’s a popular organization because it’s a female jazz group. There are very few (female jazz) groups. The music business is a male-dominated business.

You’re going to receive the 2018 JazzN-Caz Award for significant contributions to the local jazz scene. How does this compare to all the previous recognitions that you have received? There’s a lot of great jazz people that have come out of Central New York: Rochester, Syracuse, Utica. It’s a great environment to work in. There’s still a strong (jazz) community here.

Tell me about your new CD. It’s about Mark Murphy, my mentor. When I started listening to Mark I became interested in what that (jazz-singing) freedom was. I was interested in getting into something more free and expressive. Mark did it for me, Mark changed my life. He’s what you call a singer’s singer. The CD is a tribute to Mark Murphy. These are the songs that affected me when I started listening to Mark, tunes that he did. Standards “Body and Soul,” Freddie Hubbard’s “Red Clay,” “Stolen Moments.” Mark wrote lyrics to a lot of these tunes.

What do you want to do that you haven’t done? Jazz people are always looking for new musical space you’re working in. I always want to sing. I always want to record. As long as I’m alive I want to be making great jazz, great music. And I would like to thank Syracuse for providing many, many years of great joy in the jazz community. SNT

Writer John Russo celebrates 50 years of cool ghouls with Night of the Living Dead BY BILL DELAPP In interviews John Russo comes across as a friendly professorial type who is enjoying life as a senior citizen. But for many moviegoers he is also the architect of their nightmares: Russo co-wrote, with director George Romero, 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, the low-budget, black-and-white terror classic about carnivorous ghouls in search of human flesh. Russo, 79, will participate in the Living Dead Film Festival at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St., on Saturday, Sept. 15. Night of the Living Dead, presented in a 4K digital restoration, kicks off the movie marathon at noon, followed by 35mm screenings of The Return of the Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead Part 2, Cemetery Man, Shaun of the Dead and Tombs of the Blind Dead, plus digital presentations of Bloodshock and Russo’s recent film My Uncle John Is a Zombie. Other guests at the Palace include actors Linnea Quigley and Gary Vincent and Bloodshock special effects artist Marcus Koch. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door. For information, call (315) 463-9240 or visit palaceonjames.com. Russo graduated from West Virginia University with an English education degree in 1961. He eventually joined forces to make industrial films as part of The Latent Image company in Pittsburgh with his pals George Romero and Russell Streiner (who, as the bespectacled first victim in Night of the Living Dead, delivers the immortal line, “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!”) The trio and other investors then formed the Image Ten company to finance Living Dead, their first venture into feature-length cinema.

16

9.12.18 - 9.18.18 | syracusenew times.com

Perhaps because of the movie’s limited funds, its combination of believable characters, grisly set pieces, claustrophobic intensity and an unnerving sense of impending doom helped to create a landmark horror flick. And while copyright problems quickly relegated the shocker to the public domain, where it became a bootlegger favorite, Russo’s work has received the ultimate artistic validation: In 1999 it was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.

Did you think that you would still be talking about Night of the Living Dead 50 years later? No one could have predicted the phenomenon that Night of the Living Dead has become — and actually was from its beginning. But all through production we had utter confidence in what we were doing and we were all solidly behind George Romero as the director. By that time, our little five-man company had made dozens of TV spots, sales films, political spots and industrial films, and we had honed our skills to the point where our walls were covered with awards. We had developed into a highly skilled and tightly knit production unit. Nobody needed to be told what to do. We knew how to cast, do props and costumes, build sets and so on. With Night of the Living Dead we absolutely knew we were making a good movie, but we didn’t know the distribution business yet, and so we did not absolutely know if we could get it sold. We figured we could get people to see it, even if we had to hand-carry it from theater to theater.

Were you always supposed to play several small roles (including the zombie who gets beaned with a tire iron and a news reporter) in Night of the Living Dead or did you have to play them?

I had to play those roles because nobody else was around to do it. We all had tremendous zeal and belief in ourselves, and we were bound and determined to do whatever had to be done. That’s why I volunteered to be set on fire in the Molotov cocktail sequence — without an asbestos suit. We used real gasoline and there were three takes — three different angles — and all three are in the movie.

Some writers have cited allusions to the then-raging Vietnam War in Night of the Living Dead. Are those writers incorrect?

We were not out to make a political statement. Even though in real life we were all against the war and had even gone to some of the anti-war rallies in Pittsburgh and filmed them, but the footage was lost in a 1976 flood.

Were you ever annoyed about Night of the Living Dead’s copyright issues and subsequent public domain status?

I am constantly not only annoyed but totally angry and frustrated about it. Our first print had a copyright notice, and it was the distributor (the Walter Reade Organization) who left it off the prints when the title was changed from Night of Anubis. By law, if a third party makes that kind of omission, the copyright should not be lost. And that is what we have been fighting with the copyright office ever since 1995, when they decided to revoke our registration.

Halloween director John Carpenter said that he felt “flattered” by the many sequels. Do you feel the same way about Night of the Living Dead’s offspring? I feel gratified that my books and movies have been an inspiration to other filmmakers. Not just the production lessons that they teach but also how to take a small amount of independent financing and make a low-budget movie that can jump-start a career.

You went the Indiegogo route to help fund My Uncle John Is a Zombie. Would you do it again for future projects? Generally I will take whatever route is necessary to go on making movies. It is a very tough business and not for the faint of heart. But I’ve managed to make a lot of movies during my long career and to get more than two dozen books, both fiction and non-fiction, published and sold in many countries.

Finally, what scares you? What scares me is what goes on in the real world; my top fear right now is of what Trump is doing to our democracy. I have written a nonfiction book called Trumped Up! which is available on Amazon. Other realistic fears concern global warming, stupid wars, serial killers, too many guns, and on and on. As far as movies go, some of the ones that gave me the most chills and thrills are Psycho, Alien, Halloween and the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers — not the remake, which I hated. SNT

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19) Author Anne Car-

son describes part of her creative process in this way: “Sometimes I dream a sentence and write it down. It’s usually nonsense, but sometimes it seems a key to another world.” I suspect you might be able to benefit from using a comparable trick in the coming days. That’s why you should monitor any odd dreams, seemingly irrational impulses, or weird fantasies that arise in you. Although they may not be of any practical value in themselves, they could spur a train of thought that leads you to interesting breakthroughs.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) “The idea of lib-

eration through the suppression of desire is the greatest foolishness ever conceived by the human mind,” wrote philosopher E.M. Cioran. I agree that trying to deny or stifle or ignore our desires can’t emancipate us. In fact, I’m inclined to believe that freedom is only possible if we celebrate and honor our desires, marvel at their enigmas, and respect their power. Only then can we hope to refine them. Only then can we craft them into beautiful, useful forces that serve us rather than confuse and undermine us. The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to engage in this spiritual practice, Taurus.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) “Remember that

sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck,” says the Dalai Lama. Ain’t that the truth! When I was 22, there were two different women I desperately yearned for as if they were the Muse Queens of Heaven who would transform me into a great artist and quench my infinite passion. Fortunately, they both rejected me. They decisively set me free of my bondage to them. Later, when I was older and wiser, I realized that blending my fortunes with either of them would have led me away from my true destiny. I got lucky! In a similar but less melodramatic way, Gemini, I suspect you will also get lucky sometime soon.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Don’ts for Boys or Errors of Conduct Corrected was an advice book for boys published in 1902. Among many other strictures and warnings, it offered this advice: “Don’t giggle. For the love of decency, never giggle.” There was additional counsel in the same vein: “Don’t be noisy. The guffaw evinces less enjoyment than the quiet smile.” Another exhortation: “Don’t tease. Be witty, but impersonal.” In accordance with astrological omens, I hereby proclaim that all those instructions are utterly wrong for you right now. To sweetly align yourself with cosmic rhythms, you should giggle and guffaw and tease freely. If you’re witty—and I hope you will be—it’ll serve you well to be affectionate and personable. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) “Simplicity is about

subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful,” writes designer John Maeda. “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak up,” says artist Hans Hofmann. “Simplicity strips away the superfluous to reveal the essence,” declares a blogger named Cheo. I hope these quotes provide you with helpful pointers, Leo. You now have the opportunity to cultivate a masterful version of simplicity.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your keynote is the

Japanese word shizuka. According to photographer Masao Yamamoto, it means “cleansed, pure, clear, and untainted.” One of his artistic practices is to wander around forests looking in the soil for “treasures” that emanate shizuka. So in his definition, the term isn’t about being scrubbed or sanitized. Rather, he’s interested in pristine natural phenomena that are unspoiled by civilization. He regards them as food for his soul. I mention this, Virgo, because now is an excellent time for you to get big doses of people and places and things that are cleansed, pure, clear, and untainted.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Libran blogger

Ana-Sofia Cardelle writes candidly about her

relationship with herself. She keeps us up to date with the ever-shifting self-images that float through her awareness. Here’s one of her bulletins: “Stage 1. me: I’m the cutest thing in the world. Stage 2. me, two seconds later: no, I’m a freaking goblin. Stage 3. me, two seconds after that: I’m the cutest goblin in the world.” I’m guessing that many of you Libras have reached the end of your own personal version of Stage 2. You’ve either already slipped into Stage 3, or soon will. No later than Oct. 1, you’ll be preparing to glide back into Stage 1 again.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “There’s no such

thing as love,” said Scorpio painter Pablo Picasso, “there are only proofs of love.” I’m tempted to believe that’s true, especially as I contemplate the current chapter of your life story. The evidence seems clear: You will thrive by engaging in practical demonstrations of how much you care. You’ll be wise to tangibly help and support and encourage and inspire everyone and everything you love. To do so will make you eligible for blessings that are, as of this moment, still hidden or unavailable.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) According

to a Pew Research Study, nearly 75 percent of Americans say they talk to God, but only 30 percent get a reply. I’m guessing the latter figure will rise dramatically for Sagittarian Americans in the next three weeks, however. Why? Because the astrological indicators suggest that authorities of all kinds will be more responsive than usual to Sagittarians of all nationalities. Help from higher powers is likely to be both more palpable and more forthcoming. Any communications you initiate with honchos, directors and leaders have a better-than-normal chance of being well-received.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) One day in

October 1926, author Virginia Woolf inscribed in her diary, “I am the usual battlefield of emotions.” It was a complaint, but also a brag. In fact, she drew on this constant turmoil to fuel her substantial output of creative writing. But the fact is that not all of us thrive on such ongoing uproar. As perversely glamorous and appealing as it might seem to certain people, many of us can do fine without it. According to my analysis, that will be true for you in the coming weeks. If you have a diary, you might justifiably write, “Hallelujah! I am NOT a battlefield of emotions right now!”

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Anthropologist

Margaret Mead had definite ideas about “the ways to get insight.” She named them as follows: “to study infants; to study animals; to study indigenous people; to be psychoanalyzed; to have a religious conversion and get over it; to have a psychotic episode and get over it.” I have my own list of ways to spur insight and inspiration, which includes: to do walking meditations in the woods on a regular basis, no matter what the weather; to engage in long, slow sex with a person you love; to spend a few hours reviewing in detail your entire life history; to dance to music you adore for as long as you can before you collapse from delighted exhaustion. What about you, Aquarius? What are your reliable ways to get insight? I suggest you engage in some of them, and also discover a new one. You’re in the Flood of Radical Fresh Insights Phase of your astrological cycle.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Stanley Kubrick

made masterful films, but most of them bore me. I regard John Ashbery as a clever and innovative poet, but I’ve never been excited by his work. As for painter Mark Rothko, I recognize his talent and intelligence, but his art leaves me empty. The music of Nora Jones is pretty and technically impeccable, but it doesn’t move me. In the coming weeks, Pisces, I invite you to make the kinds of fine distinctions I’m describing here. It will be important for you to be faithful to your subjective responses to things, even as you maintain an objective perspective about them and treat them with respect.
