CENTRAL NEW YORK WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! For many adults, fall is just another season. After the hype of specialty coffees and apple picking has worn off, it’s time to start thinking about money for snow tires, snow blowers and snow boots. But for children, fall is marked by one major thing: the start of a new school year. Heading into October, most kids have likely reacclimated to the classroom setting. Friends have been reconnected with, homework has started coming in full force and projects are looming on the horizon.

Salt City Harvest Farm. See the story on page 14.

We’re bringing you some nostalgia with this week’s poll question: Did you like school growing up? Take our survey and share your favorite school-time memories.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Louis Cote of Mascouche, Quebec, Canada, became suspicious in August 2017 of the DNA test results obtained from the samples he collected in his work for the Confederation of Aboriginal People of Canada, whose members use DNA testing to determine their native ancestry. So, CBC News reported on June 13, Cote launched his own experiment. He collected two samples using his own inner-cheek swabs, and a third from his girlfriend’s Chihuahua, Snoopy, and sent them off to Viaguard Accu-Metrics. The results indicated that all three samples had identical DNA, including 12 percent Abenaki and 8 percent Mohawk ancestry. “I thought it was a joke,” Cote said. “The company is fooling people. . . the tests are no good.”

WILD KINGDOM

A cheeky seagull embarked on a life of crime on July 14 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, by plucking a man’s wallet from the top of a pizza box and carrying it onto a nearby roof. Phil Peterson was on a cherry picker hanging lights nearby and offered to retrieve the wallet, which was being picked apart by two baby seagulls “literally trying to eat (it),” Peterson explained. He tried to distract them by throwing bread at them, but that only turned their attention to him. “It was like the movie The Birds,” he said. “I was afraid they were going to pick my brains.” Quick-thinking bystander Mike Ramos borrowed a flashlight from a police officer and used the strobe feature to “discombobulate” the birds long enough for Peterson to sneak in, grab the wallet and bring it back to Earth. “It was just the craziest thing I ever saw in my life,” Ramos told New England Cable News.

Facebook post explained, according to The Washington Post. It “field-tested positive for methamphetamine.” On the spot, Kelly was arrested and charged with possession of meth. The Facebook post continued: “Remember, our detectives are always ready to assist anyone who believes they were misled in their illegal drug purchase.”

THERE’S ONE BORN EVERY MINUTE

Visitors crowding into a Vancouver, Canada, street festival on June 17 were invited — at $38 a pop — to try a new health craze: Hot Dog Water. The drink is marketed as a gluten-free, Keto diet-compatible, post-workout source of sodium and electrolytes, and every sleek bottle, which promises to help with weight loss, also contains a hot dog. It’s also a prank. Hot Dog Water CEO Douglas Bevans told Global News the product was dreamed up as a response to the “snake oil salesmen” of health marketing. In small print at the bottom of the sales sheet is this disclaimer: “Hot Dog Water in its absurdity hopes to encourage

PUBLIC SERVANTS

In Putnam County, Florida, the sheriff’s office provides a wide variety of services. So when Douglas Peter Kelly, 49, called the office on June 12 to complain that the methamphetamine he had been sold was fake, officers happily offered to test it for him. Kelly told detectives he had suffered a “violent reaction” after smoking the substance and wanted to sue the dealer if he had been sold the wrong drug. He arrived at the sheriff’s office and “handed detectives a clear, crystal-like substance wrapped in aluminum foil,” the office’s

critical thinking related to product marketing and the significant role it can play in our purchasing choices.” Touché.

LITIGIOUS SOCIETY

In Norman’s Bay, East Sussex, England, Nigel and Sheila Jacklin are studiously keeping their eyes down after being threatened with prosecution if they look at their neighbors’ house — an adjoining property bought five years ago by Dr. Stephane Duckett and Norinne Betjemann. The Jacklins, 26-year residents of the beachfront community, had repeatedly complained to authorities about noisy builders, verbal abuse and light pollution as Duckett and Betjemann turned a former workshop into a weekend retreat. In June, The Sun reported that after police were called into the dispute, the Rother District Council sent the Jacklins a “community protection warning” that defines an “exclusion zone” around Duckett and Betjemann’s home, forcing the Jacklins to take a roundabout route to the beach. Nigel Jacklin said: “We can’t walk to and from the beach or through the village without fear of being prosecuted.” The Jacklins plan to fight the order. Jen Sorensen

RUSH TO JUDGMENT

Minor league baseball teams come up with some wacky promotional ideas, and “Sugar Rush Night” at the Erie (Pennsylvania) SeaWolves game on June 23 didn’t disappoint. WNEP-TV noted that one highlight was the cotton candy hot dog: a wiener nestled in a cloud of cotton candy, then sprinkled with Nerds candies. Brave SeaWolves fans could top off the meal with a cotton candy ball: ice cream covered with sprinkles and enclosed in cotton candy. Maybe the sugar rush was too much for the players; they lost 5-3 to the Altoona (Pennsylvania) Curve.

WHAT IS ART?

As part of the Dark Mofo art festival, Australian performance artist Mike Parr, 73, entered a steel tomb below busy Macquarie Street in Hobart on June 14, where he meditated, drew and read as traffic flowed overhead for 72 hours until his release on June 17. Parr had water but no food, and oxygen was pumped into the box. His performance was promoted as a “response to 20th-century totalitarian violence,” according to The Guardian, but the piece didn’t speak to everyone. “I don’t take anything away from it at all,” said Carolyn Bowerman from Townsville. “I’m just amazed that someone would put themselves through this and go to this much effort.” In a previous performance art piece, Parr hacked at a prosthetic arm with an ax before a shocked audience.

NAKED CAME THE STRANGERS

In Melbourne, Australia, customers of the Prahran neighborhood Woolworths store had to park somewhere else on July 9, as renowned American photographer Spencer Tunick captured hundreds of willing nudes in a group shot on the store’s rooftop parking lot. Reuters reported more than 11,000 people registered to disrobe for Tunick, who has done group nudes in other spots around the world, although only 500 turned out for the occasion. “It’s well and truly oversubscribed,” said John Lotton, director of the Provocare Festival of the Arts in Melbourne.

AWESOME!

On June 23, firefighters of Engine 642

of the Henrietta, New York, Fire District went the extra mile after responding to an accident in which the injured driver was a pizza delivery man, according to Fox News. “Once the patient was cared for and loaded into the ambulance, the crew decided to finish the delivery so the pizza wouldn’t go to waste,” the fire department posted on its Facebook page. “If it’s not delivery it’s Di. . . Fire dept?!”

NOT-SO-GREAT ESCAPE

James J. Rynerson, 38, was being held in the Mesa County (Colorado) Jail in May after being charged with menacing, disorderly conduct and trespass. But on May 21, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported, sheriff’s deputies at the jail released him, having mistaken him for Marvin March, 35, a different inmate. Jail staff gave Rynerson March’s belongings, and he wore March’s leather jacket as he signed March’s name to the release papers and left the facility. Rynerson’s

wife was startled to see her husband in the garage at their home, and after he explained what happened, she convinced him to go back. She “personally drove him back to the Mesa County Detention Facility,” the report noted, and he was back in custody by 11 p.m., with new charges, including escape and forgery, added to his list.

OOPS!

A woman in Wenling, China, was so thrilled to be driving the Ferrari 458 she rented on June 21 that she recorded herself while waiting at a stoplight: “First time driving a Ferrari. This truly is the most amazing feeling.” But within minutes, reported The Daily Mail, she swerved out of control, striking a metal traffic barrier and a BMW X3, destroying the front end of the $660,000 Ferrari and deploying its airbags. Neither the driver nor her passenger was injured in the accident.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo may have hundreds of pretty blue highway signs posted next to New York state highways, but that doesn’t mean he knows what direction he should be going in. Seven months ago, his administration announced that the controversial blue “I Love NY” promotional signs erected along the state’s interstate highways would be taken down by Sept. 30 to avoid losing $14 million in valuable highway funding. Well, Sept. 30 is upon us and the more than 500 signs are still up. The federal government has long made it clear — and the state has been well aware — that the signs were illegal because they violate state law and federal highway safety regulations. The state decided instead to put them up anyway. According to documents obtained under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, the state even brushed off a formal proposal from the federal government to work together to create promotional signs that were both informative and compliant with the law. Incredibly, after a years-long feud, millions of taxpayer dollars wasted and Washington holding our highway infrastructure spending for ransom, the Cuomo administration is still hell-bent on preserving at least some of these signs. According to emails and draft records acquired by USA Today Network’s Albany Bureau earlier this month, Cuomo’s office is still trying to negotiate terms

9.26.18 - 10.2.18 | syracusenew times.com

with the federal government, proposing to take down the roughly 400 “follow-up” signs, while keeping up 122 “motherboard” signs. The signs are in a common pattern on the side of the road. A large “motherboard” sign has four logos of the state’s tourism programs under the heading “The New York State Experience.” This is then quickly followed by four smaller signs. A major factor in this feud is over the word “Experience.” The state wants to keep it in italics, which federal regulations say can lessen a driver’s ability to read the sign at 65 mph. According to the news bureau, the state has agreed to take the “I Love NY” website address and app name off the signs but is insistent that the “motherboard” signs stay up completely. Here’s a better idea: Just take down the damn signs. Comply with federal rules and put this ridiculous time-consuming disagreement — one that never needed to happen in the first place — to bed. In the Jan. 4, 2017, column “Feds to Thruway: Signs Off!,” I initially defended the purpose of the signs, knowing that tourism is a $100 billion industry in New York state, and crucial to the upstate economy. But the road we have taken to get to where we are now is definitely not worth any benefit the signs may or may not have produced. In a feud that dates back to 2013, the state spent $8.1 million in taxpayer mon-

ey — that’s $15,000 per sign — to build and install signs they knew were illegal. Now we’ll have to spend an untold amount of money to take them down. whenever the state feels compelled to do so. Let’s also not forget that the state was in such a hurry to get these illegal signs up by the busy Independence Day weekend in 2016 that it ironically employed a company in Arkansas to assist in manufacturing them. Nothing says “I Love NY” more than signs that promote New York’s homemade products being made in a state on the other side of the Mississippi River. There is also no way to measure the signs’ specific impact on tourism so we actually have no idea how effective these “I Love NY” signs that weren’t made in New York really are. And if the state gets its way and is able to keep 122 of them up, we will still never know. Unsurprisingly, the state claims the initiative has been “overwhelmingly successful.” And after all of that, we’re now down to whether or not the words should be in italics — with $14 million at stake. If the Cuomo administration is lost in what to do in this highway signs saga, there is already a group of signs up that aren’t illegal and provide information on a simple traffic maneuver that is actually also good advice for what the state should do. They say “EXIT.” SNT

LIGHT WORK PHOTO SHOW EXAMINES SOCIAL ISSUES Sometimes an exhibition has no problem fulfilling multiple missions. On one level, Be Strong and Do Not Betray Your Soul is a large group show selected from Light Work Gallery’s collection. It displays photos taken by 40 artists working in locales ranging from downtown San Francisco to rural Georgia, from Jamaica to Mexico and Ethiopia. On another level, the exhibit looks at connections between photographers and subjects, reflects on how media tell some people’s stories badly, and shows how incisive photos can challenge societal perceptions. Consider Jim Goldberg’s mid-1980s image of Annie Williams, who was then living in a run-down hotel in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. The photo is paired with her handwritten statement discussing her life. This is from a series focusing on the gap between poor and rich people; that series is certainly relevant to life in San Francisco today. In another collaborative piece, Jess Dugan’s photo of Gloria, a 70-year-old transgender individual living in Chicago, is accompanied by the subject’s own statement. The show encompasses types of work such as images communicating a sense of place. It includes a piece from Jessica Garza Cuen’s series documenting Rabun County, Georgia. In addition, David Graham photographed a desert scene featuring a solitary sign with the words “Buy NowPay Later.” No people or buildings are seen, and the sign offers an ironic message. Jackie Nickerson focuses on life in rural Africa, where farm workers labor very hard just to survive. Her camera presents a man engulfed by the load of tobacco leaves he’s carrying. Viewers can’t see his face: He’s covered up by the workload. Beyond that, Be Strong and Do Not Betray Your Soul looks at nontraditional approaches to photography. Chan Chao, in a well-received project, photographed rebels from the Karen, an ethnic group opposing the military regime in Burma, now known as Myanmar. His image of a guerrilla doesn’t show him holding a weapon; instead, he has a cigarette in one hand and a saw in the other. Chao completed the project in 1996. Since then, thousands of Karen citizens have fled either to Thailand or countries such as the United States.

10

There’s also an image from Claire Beckett’s series, “Hearts and Minds,” which documented U.S. Marines and soldiers preparing for warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her photo depicts a training exercise in which Marine Lance Corporal Joshua Stevens plays the role of a Taliban fighter. The exhibition has a variety of photos exploring identity. John Edmonds’ “Jordan Raises His Hand” is from a body of work delving into perceptions of young African-American men. He has created many portraits, including those seen in the series “Hoods,” in which the subjects wear hooded sweatshirts and have their faces obscured. “Portrait of a Fallen Woman” by Carrie Mae Weems depicts the artist herself playing a role to probe cultural identity. In photos, video and other media, she has investigated race, class and social relations. Her work has appeared in museums and galleries across the United States and around the world. Several images are spur-of-the-moment photos. In a project called “Stranded,” Amy Stein shot people waiting on roadsides because of an accident or some other cause. “Peri” portrays a young girl in pink standing on the side of a road outside Lexington, Kentucky. Because it’s a chilly day, she has her arms inside her shirt, influencing viewers to look twice. That visual twist provides the energy for this photo. The exhibition was selected by guest curators Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, both of whom were once visiting artists at Light Work. They currently administer For Freedoms, a national organization that produces exhibitions, public art and billboards to encourage greater participation in civic life. In addition to this show, Light Work and For Freedoms are collaborating on a series of six billboards in the Syracuse area. “With Democracy in the Balance There Is Only One Choice,” designed by Carrie Mae Weems, has already been installed. It’s on I-690, between Thompson Road and Midler Avenue. Be Strong and Do Not Betray Your Soul runs through Oct. 18 at Light Work, 316 Waverly Ave. For more information about the show or the billboards, call (315) 4431300. SNT

LADIES NIGHTS WITH MUSIC, LAUGHS AND TEARS The 1960s, unlike any other decade, never died. They are with us all the time. That accounts for the complete absence of nostalgia and instead supplies the through-the-roof energy of Beehive, now blasting away through Oct. 6 as the season finale at Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. This is not a jukebox musical but more honorably a revue, only that’s the wrong word. The 32 numbers performed by eight women never look back. They are clear, present and sometimes dangerous. Don’t feel left out if you have never heard of Beehive or its creator Larry Gallagher, who died in 1988. The show began as a low-budget cabaret that ran for a long time at Washington’s Top of the Gate, in the Watergate Hotel. Never

12

on Broadway, Beehive has been gaining volume at select venues around the country for two decades and is receiving its poshest production anywhere in Auburn. Director-choreographer Brett Smock has poured extensive resources into this post-Labor Day show, when the company usually cuts back. Scenic designer David Arsenault and lighting designer Dan Ozminkowski provide a set of Chinese puzzle complexity, with stairways leading into the air and stages at multiple levels. As if that were not enough, the scenery is surrounded by 12 irregular panels on which are projected such items as a vintage black-and-white TV ad for hairspray featuring the septuagenarian Three Stooges. If readers don’t know the show, they’ll

9.26.18 - 10.2.18 | syracusenew times.com

know every performer depicted, from Diana Ross to Tina Turner to Janis Joplin. Significantly, the program is not so patronizing as to name them even when it gives every title. Hipsters, however, get extra credit for Lesley Gore of “It’s My Party.” Four singers are African American, and four are white, allowing the subject of race to be treated with utmost tact. Many numbers are unself-consciously integrated but five of the first nine numbers are performed by the black performers alone. Cultural appropriation is a sensitive subject these days, but Smock and company are allowing that the origin of 1960s rock is in the urban north, especially Detroit, home of The Supremes and Aretha Franklin.

This leads, ironically, to the paradox of the show’s title, when spray-inflated hair flourished in the pre-Beatles era. Makeup designer Alfonso Annotto has supplied about 20 excellent changes of wigs, but the hairsprays appear only in the first three numbers. By the time the girls get to Woodstock they were all letting it hang down naturally. Music director Corinne Aquilina and her ensemble of six, so accustomed to show tunes during a typical MGR summer, command the rock idiom with authority. Beehive’s eight cast members are top performers with sterling credits, but some are allowed outstanding solos. These are not imitations as much as tributes, without the original singer ever being named. The first is Crystal Sha’nae as Aretha Franklin in “I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You).” Brittney Mack actually does stop the show with her tributes to Tina Turner in “River Deep, Mountain High” and “Proud Mary.” And Angela Travino impresses early as Dusty Springfield but really sets the stage on fire with three faces of Janis Joplin, especially the death-defying “Cry Baby.” For the Redhouse at City Center’s season opener, the company revives a durable evergreen. Steel Magnolias, implying Southern women who are both delicate and indestructible, takes us back to “Tears through laughter” country. The enduring popularity of the Dolly Parton-Julia Roberts movie (1989) after three decades means that many people know the general premise and that many women now in their 20s are named Shelby. What many forget is that Magnolias was a socko stage hit two years earlier and still provides six juicy roles for the right women, as it does for this Redhouse production, running through Sunday, Sept. 30. Familiar lines like “There is no such thing as natural beauty,” with a two-handed lift to an ample bust, deliver the laughs right on cue. In these days of conspicuous misogyny, it’s worth remembering that playwright Robert Harling based Steel Magnolias, his only stage hit, on empathetic observation of an actual beauty parlor in northwest Louisiana and an episode in his family history. Further, guy director Temar Underwood is also calling the

shots. Sisterhood may be powerful, but some men can help women to speak in their own voices. The separateness of maleness from the beauty parlor is just one of the ways Steel Magnolias works better on stage than screen, over and above the freshening of the lines. The dialogue on stage is continually interrupted by shotgun blasts from one of the husbands, Drum (for Drummond) Eatenton, sometimes knocking the women over. When in the movie we have a separate scene of the husband with a gun in his hand, the effect is lost. This production launches the Redhouse’s first full season in the capacious new Austen and Allyn Theatre, with many standards remaining in place. The quality of scenic designer Shane Cinal’s set, brightly enhanced by lighting designer Margaret Peebles, assures us that this is a professional production, and two Equity players have been invited in from out of town. As before, however, the Redhouse has places for the strongest of community theater players. Magdalyn Donnelly, last seen locally in The Bombitty of Errors (May 2017), holds the emotional center of the action as shop owner Truvy Jones, who’s also an ironist.

Caroline Strang (Belle in Beauty and the Beast from December 2016) navigates the tricky terrain of newcomer Annelle’s fundamentalist faith as well as the arc of her changing character. Even though Annelle is supposed to be naïve and slow on the uptake, Strang can’t help but make her reactions hilarious. Audiences will react strongly to the portrayals of the four local players, two of them in their best roles ever. Redhouse regular Marguerite Mitchell is a redhead offstage, but with two blond wigs and different speech patterns, she is transmogrified as Shelby, the tragic diabetic. Her ominous first-act hypoglycemic tremor is convincing and terrifying. She makes Shelby’s determination brave rather than heedless. Although all six players get laughs, veteran character player Marcia Mele gets the lioness’ share as the irascible Ouiser, such as, “I’m not crazy: I’ve just been in a very bad mood for 40 years.” Karis Wiggins delivers an elegant Clairee, sharply distinguished from Ouiser, as she ably navigates the show’s climactic moment. And Laura Stisser, on local stages for only two years, gracefully executes the emotional heavy lifting of grief-stricken mother M’Lynn. SNT

urn off Fyler Road in Kirkville and enter a whole other world, one that’s lush, green and peaceful. Hops, famous for flavoring beer, grow in profusion. There’s a vineyard with Frontenac grapes and an apple orchard with dozens of varieties, each planted in their own row.

The land is owned by Theresa and Brian Letcher and their son, Dylan, who have donated a portion of it to the Salt City Harvest Farm, a 35-acre nonprofit farm that provides a place for members of Syracuse’s North Side New American community to grow — in more ways than one. People plant and grow produce, find community and gain entrepreneurial and life skills. “They’re the farmers,” Theresa Letcher says, while offering a tour of the property. “I’m not a farmer.” The land was vacant until about 2012, when the Letchers started to plant vegetables, which they donated to food pantries on the North Side. In doing so, they made connections with churches and community groups. member. Potteiger says the farm grew out of several community gardens on the North Side created by Syracuse Grows, a nonprofit that supports grassroots community gardening and urban agriculture efforts. Today, immigrants and New Americans from Bhutan, Somalia, Nepal, Eritrea and other countries grow produce native to their homelands: bitter gourd, Asian long beans and specialty peppers and eggplants. They also grow vegetables that are common here, like tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, okra and more. Community gardens in urban settings serve a need, Potteiger says, but many in the North Side New American community are from rural areas and possess a great deal of knowledge about farming and agriculture. Some had livestock, like goats, oxen and pigs.

The farm is tended collectively, by different groups at different times, says farm manager Graham Savio, who joined the farm this year. There are also incubator plots, where participants in the Syracuse Refugee Agricultural Partnership Program — New Americans who hope to one day have farms of their own — learn about the Central New York soil, the region’s fickle weather and short growing season, how to manage crop production and the steps needed to buy land and start a business. Late in the afternoon on a recent Monday, a group of deaf New Americans boarded a minivan at the White Branch Library on Butternut Street in Syracuse and made the 20-minute trip to the farm. They took in the scenery, crouched to pull weeds and checked the progress of the vegetables they planted earlier in the season. The farm is hard work, Savio

Through two interpreters, one using American Sign Language and speaking English and one using foreign sign language, the New Americans told visitors how they are using what they grow on the farm. “I had some and shared some with my mother,” said one. “I planted it, I weeded it, I cooked it, I ate it,” said another, bringing smiles and laughter. “Where we live, there’s no place we can grow food,” added another. MUSIC

Photos By Michael Davis Fizz ed: Before the Gene Simmons Band rocked the Turning Stone Resort and Casino’s Event Center on Sept. 21, the famed Kiss star lured a big crowd for an afternoon gig at the Tops supermarket in the Fayetteville Towne Center. Only instead of hard rock, Simmons was pushing pop-- as in the carbonated beverage known as MoneyBag Sodas, a premium brand manufactured by Rock Steady Sodas in Niagara Falls. The event attracted admirers of all ages, including a dad and his son both sporting Kiss T-shirts and lead singer Tom Carpenter from local band Born Again Savages, while plenty of selfies displayed fans attempting to match their unspooled tongues against Simmons’ sizable serpent. It was no contest.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Do you have any skills at living on the edge between the light and the dark? Are you curious about what the world might look like and how people would treat you if you refused to divide everything up into that which helps you and that which doesn’t help you? Can you imagine how it would feel if you loved your life just the way it is and not wish it were different from what it is? Please note: People less courageous than you might prefer you to be less courageous. But I hope you’ll stay true to the experiment of living on the edge between the light and the dark. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) According to Pop-

bitch.com, most top-charting pop songs are in a minor key. In light of this fact, I encourage you to avoid listening to pop songs for the next three weeks. In my astrological opinion, it’s essential that you surround yourself with stimuli that don’t tend to make you sad and blue, that don’t influence you to interpret your experience through a melancholic, mournful filter. To accomplish the assignments that life will be sending you, you need to at least temporarily cultivate a mood of crafty optimism.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Gemini regent

Queen Victoria (1819–1901) wore crotchless underwear made of linen. A few years ago, Britain’s Museums, Libraries, and Archives Council accorded them “national designated status,” an official notice that means they are a national treasure. If I had the power, I would give your undergarments an equivalent acknowledgment. The only evidence I would need to make this bold move would be the intelligence and expressiveness with which you are going to wield your erotic sensibilities in the coming weeks.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) I’ve taken a break

from socializing, my fellow Cancerian. In fact, I’m on sabbatical from my regular rhythm. My goal for the coming days is to commune with my past and review the story of my life. Rather than fill my brain up with the latest news and celebrity gossip, I am meditating on my own deep dark mysteries. I’m mining for secrets that I might be concealing from myself. In accordance with the astrological omens, I suggest that you follow my lead. You might want to delve into boxes of old mementoes or reread emails from years ago. You could get in touch with people who are no longer part of your life even though they were once important to you. How else could you get into intimate contact with your eternal self?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Here’s a quote from A Map of Misreading, a book by renowned literary critic Harold Bloom: “Where the synecdoche of tessera made a totality, however illusive, the metonymy of kenosis breaks this up into discontinuous fragments.” What the cluck did Harold Bloom just say? I’m not being anti-intellectual when I declare this passage to be pretentious drivel. In the coming days, I urge you Leos to draw inspiration from my response to Bloom. Tell the truth about nonsense. Don’t pretend to appreciate jumbled or overcomplicated ideas. Expose bunk and bombast. Be kind, if you can, but be firm. You’re primed to be a champion of down-toearth communication. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The data research

company Priceonomics suggests that Monday is the most productive day of the week and that October is the most productive month of the year. My research suggests that while Capricorns tend to be the most consistently productive of all the signs in the zodiac, Virgos often outstrip them for a six-week period during the end of each September and throughout October. Furthermore, my intuition tells me that you Virgos now have an extraordinary capacity to turn good ideas into practical action. I conclude, therefore, that you are about to embark on a surge of industrious and high-quality work. (P.S.: This October has five Mondays.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Biologists are con-

26

stantly unearthing new species, although not new in the sense of having just appeared on our planet. In fact, they’re animals and plants that have existed for millennia. But they’ve never before been noticed and identified by science. Among recent additions to our ever-growing knowledge are an orchid in Madagascar that smells like champagne, an electric blue tarantula in the Guyana rain forest, and a Western Australian grass that has a flavor resembling salt and vinegar potato chips. I suspect you’ll be making metaphorically comparable discoveries in the coming weeks, Libra: evocative beauty that you’ve been blind to and interesting phenomena that have been hiding in plain sight.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) There is no such

thing as a plant that blooms continuously. Phases of withering and dormancy are just as natural as phases of growth. I bring this fact to your attention to help you remain poised as you go through your own period of withering followed by dormancy. You should accept life’s demand that you slow down and explore the mysteries of fallowness. You should surrender sweetly to stasis and enjoy your time of rest and recharging. That’s the best way to prepare for the new cycle of growth that will begin in a few weeks.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) If you were ever going to win a contest that awarded you a free vacation to an exotic sanctuary, it would probably happen during the next three weeks. If a toy company would ever approach you about developing a line of action figures and kids’ books based on your life, it might also be sometime soon. And if you have ever had hopes of converting your adversaries into allies, or getting support and backing for your good original ideas, or finding unexpected inspiration to fix one of your not-so-good habits, those opportunities are now more likely than they have been for some time. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) An 81-year-old

Capricorn man named James Harrison has donated his unique blood on 1,173 occasions. Scientists have used it to make medicine that prevents Rhesus disease in unborn babies, thereby healing more than 2.4 million kids and literally saving thousands of lives. I don’t expect you to do anything nearly as remarkable. But I do want to let you know that the coming weeks will be a favorable time to lift your generosity and compassion to the next level. Harrison would serve well as your patron saint.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) On a spring

morning some years ago, a smoky aroma woke me from a deep sleep. Peering out my bedroom window into the backyard, I saw that my trickster girlfriend Anastasia had built a bonfire. When I stumbled to my closet to get dressed, I found my clothes missing. There were no garments in my dresser, either. In my groggy haze, I realized that my entire wardrobe had become fuel for Anastasia’s conflagration. It was too late to intervene, and I was still quite drowsy, so I crawled back in bed to resume snoozing. A while later, I woke to find her standing next to the bed bearing a luxurious breakfast she said she’d cooked over the flames of my burning clothes. After our meal, we stayed in bed all day, indulging in a variety of riotous fun. I’m not predicting that similar events will unfold in your life, Aquarius. But you may experience adventures that are almost equally boisterous, hilarious and mysterious.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) I’ve got three

teachings for you. 1. Was there a time in your past when bad romance wounded your talent for love? Yes, but you now have more power to heal that wound than you’ve ever had before. 2. Is it possible you’re ready to shed a semi-delicious addiction to a chaotic magic? Yes. Clarity is poised to trump melodrama. Joyous decisiveness is primed to vanquish ingrained sadness. 3. Has there ever been a better time than now to resolve and graduate from past events that have bothered and drained you for a long time? No. This is the best time ever.
