Syracuse’s North Side is home to many of the city’s oldest structures, some dating to the early 20th century. Four of those buildings on the 700 block of North Salina Street are being demolished this week, collateral damage from an Aug. 29 fire that was caused by a discarded cigarette. Michael Davis photo

IN THIS ISSUE CENTRAL NEW YORK WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Former football star Colin Kaepernick has been signed to Nike’s 30th anniversary “Just Do It” advertisement campaign. A black-andwhite photo of Kaepernick’s face is overlaid with: “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” Backlash began almost immediately, with people destroying their Nike apparel on social media in protest, Fox News showed. #NikeBoycott was also trending worldwide on Twitter Tuesday morning and the company’s shares fell by about 3.9 percent, Bloomberg reported. However, an analyst for the economic journal believes a long-term relationship could outweigh any current upsets.

BARE NECESSITY

Making good on his promise, Welshman Mark Williams, 43, celebrated his third world snooker championship by conducting the post-match news conference at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England, in the buff. Williams, who beat John Higgins of Scotland on May 7, is the event’s oldest winner in 40 years, Reuters noted. “I’m not going to say anything stupid, but to be honest if I won this next year, I’d cartwheel down here naked,” Williams promised.

THINK YOUR JOB IS BAD?

Car salesman Brett Bland in League City, Texas, finally had enough and filed a lawsuit in May against his employer, AutoNation Acura Gulf Freeway, and Jeremy Pratt, a co-worker. Pratt, the suit alleges, engaged in “constant taunting, making extremely crass, vulgar and rude comments” and “reinforced dominance over his subordinates by regularly entering their enclosed offices, intentionally passing gas and then laughing,” as well as “pinching and touching his male subordinates’ nipples.” KPRC-TV reported Pratt was fired after sending a text to everyone at the dealership alleging Bland was a sex offender (which he is not). After the firing, however, Bland’s lawsuit alleges, AutoNation allowed Pratt to “loiter at the dealership” and continue harassing employees, and Bland was threatened with termination if he didn’t

sell eight vehicles a month. Bland seeks damages and court costs.

EWWWWWWW!

In Beihai, South China, an unnamed 51-year-old man had been experiencing nonstop nosebleeds for 10 days when his wife told him she saw something “peek” out of his nose. In June, Metro News reported, the man went to Beihai People’s Hospital, where Dr. Liu Xiongguang removed a slithery, several-inches-long leech from his nostril as a nurse filmed the procedure. The doctor said the leech might have entered the patient’s nose as he swam in a river.

POO NEWS

Henry George Weaver, 69, of New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, ended an argument with another man June 8 by defecating on him. According to Lehigh Valley Live, Pennsylvania state police reported that “the accused and the victim got into a road-rage argument, leading the accused to defecate on the victim,” but they did not disclose what started the argument. Weaver was charged with harassment.

WAY TO GO

Samen Kondorura was joined by dozens of male relatives mourning his mother’s death in North Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on June 15, as they carried her coffin to a lakkean, a wooden stilt structure where dead bodies are stored during traditional funeral ceremonies. But as they hoisted the coffin up a bamboo ladder, The Jakarta Post reported, the ladder broke and the coffin fell, striking people in the crowd, including Kondorura himself, who suffered a severe head injury and died on the way to the hospital.

TIME TO GO

Ninety-six-year-old Barney Smith of Alamo Heights, Texas, is known around those parts as the King of the Commode for his life’s work: more than 1,300 decorated toilet seats, all displayed in the retired master plumber’s Toilet Seat Art Museum. But now, he concedes, it’s time to put a lid on it: “I’m beginning to feel like I’d rather be in an air-conditioned home in a chair, looking at a good proJen Sorensen

gram,” Smith, who is bent with arthritis and uses a cane, told the Associated Press on May 22. Inside the metal-garage museum the collection includes toilet lids decorated with a chunk of the Berlin Wall, a piece of insulation from the Space Shuttle Challenger, Pez dispensers and flint arrowheads, along with the toilet lid from the airplane that carried Aristotle Onassis’ body back to Greece after his death. Smith told his wife, Louise, that he would stop at 500 pieces, but that was 850 lids ago. “If I would have just read my Bible as many hours as I spent on my toilet seats, I’d be a better man,” Smith said. Louise died in 2014, and Smith took a fall recently and broke some ribs. Now he’s looking for someone who will keep the museum intact: “This is my life’s history here.”

PRECOCIOUS BEHAVIOR

On May 20, as a handful of adults enjoyed the swings at Angel Park in southwest Atlanta, two children walked up and asked to use the swing set. The adults agreed and started to walk away, reported The (Macon, Georgia) Telegraph, when the boys, about 6 and 12 years old, pulled out rocks the size of baseballs and what appeared to be a black handgun. They threw the rocks, hitting one man on the calf and causing an abrasion, according to Atlanta police. The older boy held the gun and pointed it at the adults, who ran away as the boys ran in the opposite direction. Earlier in May, two children were reported for an alleged armed carjacking in the same neighborhood.

OOPS!

Pesky weeds around his garage caused a Springfield Township, Ohio, resident to resort to extreme measures: The unnamed homeowner tried to eliminate them with a torch, and instead set the garage on fire. Firefighters were called to the scene at 4 a.m. on May 24, where they found the detached garage “fully involved,” according to the Springfield News-Sun. The structure was a total loss, including tools and appliances inside, valued at $10,000 to $15,000.

NIXON’S THE ONE? A hit-and-run encounter with gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon

A dozen supporters of Cynthia Nixon’s campaign for governor filtered into Forman Park on East Genesee Street across from the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Sept. 1, followed by a dozen waving signs for Rachel May, who is challenging David Valesky for state Senate in the Sept. 13 Democratic primary. The local stop, on the road between Ithaca and an appearance at the New York State Fair, was a hoped-for beginning to answer the question of where were the upstate topics in the single debate staged by Nixon and incumbent Andrew Cuomo on Aug. 29. At the local rally, the former Sex and the City star proposed a $15-an-hour minimum wage for upstate. Nixon also noted that in the discussion of replacement for Interstate-81, “We need to be looking at the community grid.” The low turnout at Forman Park reflected the Democratic Primary reality, in which, for example, fewer than 10 percent of the state’s 5.8 million registered Democrats voted in the 2014 gubernatorial primary (more than half from New York City). Ken Warner, upstate region political director for the Working Families Party, who had helped organize the rally, said the numbers weren’t as important as the energy he was encountering at each stop along the way. Several attendees projected campaigns beyond the current, not so much new politics as expanded participation in the existing system. “If you want things changed,” Nixon advised, “you have to bring about the change yourself.” Then it was time to leave the park and nosh on the traditional sausage sandwich at the fair.

THINGS THAT MATTER B y L u k e Pa r s n o w

UPSTATE ISSUES MISSING FROM CUOMO-NIXON DEBATE The Aug. 29 televised debate between Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon may have been about two candidates seeking a state office, but it was hard to tell. That’s because the two Democrats running for New York governor spent the majority of their time onstage squabbling about who is least like Donald Trump, the condition of New York City subways and whether or not the incumbent plans to run for president in several years. For the amount of aggressive language the two used toward each other — Nixon at one point said “Can you stop lying?” and Cuomo called Nixon “a corporation” — there was certainly a lack of aggression when addressing the issues that matter to people north of Westchester County. Despite an hour-long debate, upstate New York was absent from the talking points that either candidate put forward. They talked about labor strikes in New York City, but not the loss of labor from the hundreds of thousands of longtime citizens who have moved out of the up-

state region and taken their skills to another state. The candidates talked about the politics surrounding the Tappan Zee Bridge, but not about the 20 percent of the state’s bridges that are “functionally obsolete.” There was no mention of the various economic development programs that were supposed to bring upstate back to life but have produced lackluster results. There was no mention of the numerous casinos that litter upstate that are financially flailing. There was no mention of storing oil trains in the pristine Adirondack Mountains or incinerating trash in the beautiful Finger Lakes. There was no mention that Central New York, the North Country and Western New York have seen decreases in workforce participation while New York City and the Hudson Valley have seen increases. Yes, Gov. Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon addressed many topics that would certainly have statewide interest. They

spent extensive time talking about runaway corruption in the state capitol, the future of healthcare and the prospect of legalizing marijuana, among others. But in running for statewide office, both candidates seemed to neglect those who live in 95 percent of the state’s geography. Both Cuomo and Nixon were lambasted with criticism for days afterward. Former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, who decided to run for governor as an independent after deciding against challenging Cuomo in a primary, tweeted that she found it “particularly disappointing that the single debate didn’t feature any questions about upstate job creation or the failure of the governor’s economic development programs.” Some members of the Republican Party even called for a second debate in an upstate location that addresses issues exclusively to upstate. But there is no time remaining before the Sept. 13 primary elections to plan such an operation. Indeed, you would think both candi-

dates would want to improve their pretty poor popularity or attention that upstate voters have awarded them. In his 2014 re-election, Cuomo only won a handful of counties in the entire upstate region. And a July poll from Siena College found the Republican gubernatorial nominee, Marc Molinaro, was leading Cuomo by six points in a hypothetical matchup. For her part, Nixon’s connection with upstate has been more rooted in jokes than a serious campaign for office. There are times when the argument about upstate being ignored by downstate can get seriously overblown. The two regions are partners and more codependent on each other than we realize. But there is a strong frustration among many upstate residents that they are too often regarded by their government as second-tier citizens to those who live in the city. And when a debate between two Democratic candidates running for governor fails to address upstate issues at all, who can blame them? SNT

STAGE

By James MacKillop

Marcus Goldhaber, Matthew Krob, Blaire Baker, Jason Plourde and Scotland Newton in Cortland Repertory Theatre’s The Rat Pack Lounge.

WHODUNIT HILARITY AND SWIZZLE-STICK NOSTALGIA Savor for a moment the paradox in the title of Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair’s musical comedy Murder for Two, running through Sept. 15 at Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. If there are only two persons, how can there be space for a victim, a perpetrator, a detective or, for that matter, the butler? It turns out they’re all there, including a ballerina, three rowdy choirboys and a psychiatrist, but not the butler. There are two performers: Short Anthony Norman plays the investigator Marcus, while tall Noel Carey supplies all the rest, including all suspects, for more than 90 wild minutes, with no intermission. They both also really play the piano. Murder for Two feels like a labor-saving show. After all, by the end of the summer all of the chorus girls and boys have left town, and the tech crews have been reduced. One could imagine Murder for Two as a cabaret act, or even staged in a closet. But the MGR folks have moved it up-

8

market. Although action begins in front of a scrim, that’s quickly pulled away to reveal Czerton Lim’s set design, with props suggesting an upper-class home. There is a plot, even though it’s not the focus of our attention. Officer Marcus is called to a New England mansion to investigate the murder of novelist Arthur Whitney, a man with a host of enemies. The first informant is the deceased’s wife Dahlia, a flamboyant Southern belle. Opening lines suggest an origin in the works of James M. Cain or Raymond Chandler rather than Agatha Christie. Another good source of information is the addled psychiatrist Dr. Griff (puns with gruff), who seems to have been treating every loony on the roster. Both Norman and Carey are masters of mime, a word that gives many audiences a chill. Instead, think of them as bodily expressive silent film comedians, well directed by Scott Weinstein. Norman, with a mop of thick black hair, exudes the aggression of the younger Charlie Chaplin,

9.5.18 - 9.11.18 | syracusenew times.com

before he discovered pathos. And Carey has something in common with Harold Lloyd, only more supple and lithe. Verbally, Carey embodies the manic energy we used to associate with Robin Williams. He’s mercurial in leaping across gender, class and age barriers in an instant, needing only a turn of the head and a raised elbow to evoke haughty prima ballerina Barrette Lewis. He delivers the most sustained bravura performance seen all year. No stranger to the Auburn stage, Carey stole the show as rockin’ Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet (August 2016). He’s also a specialist in this multi-part role, having performed it in Chicago just a month ago. Mania is hard to maintain, however, as we have pretty well guessed who done it well before the end. Carey and Norman never flag, however, as they frantically retell the story at the end at hyper-speed. While the MGR season is still continuing, the summer shows from Cortland

Repertory Theatre come to a close with The Rat Pack Lounge, a musical salute to the era of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. that runs through Saturday, Sept. 8. The show is not being performed at the Little York Lake pavilion, however. Cortland Rep is presenting this unknown but somehow familiar musical review — guided by director Mark Reynold, who helmed Newsies earlier this summer-- at the company’s very contemporary but still intimate downtown location, 24 Port Watson St. All five singers — four men, one woman — and the three musicians under the lead of Joel Gelpe, meet or exceed Cortland Rep’s conspicuously high standards. And all the music is golden, too. Any audience member old enough to remember when telephone numbers had words in them, like Lincoln 2-4626, will know and very likely savor every one of 29 prerock hits. The narrative package, written by James Hindman and Ray Roderick, alas, is not as winning as the music or the performers. Obviously inspired by Forever Plaid, which Rat Pack Lounge resembles, there’s too much contrived talk about death and redemption that does little to enhance the performances. At times it also looks like a non-holiday steal from It’s a Wonderful Life. The Rat Pack Lounge is a tacky, falling-apart pub in the boonies. A prominent sign on the shabby set announces that it’s January 1999, by which time all the well-remembered principals were dead, or, as the script puts it, “with God.” Frank Sinatra had made a promise to return if needed, and the despairing bartender Vic Candelino (Marcus Goldhaber) has a gun and is thinking of saying goodbye to the cruel world. That’s when the spirits of Frank, Dino and Sammy decide to come down to inhabit the bodies of convenient barflies, while retaining their celestial and historical identities. Despite the clumsy contrivances, the performers are able to knock out the music we’re hearing, like “My Way,” and have no obligation to mimic the showbiz icons. For example, actor Scotland Newton plays Bobby Goldberg, the only black man in the tavern. Bobby will be possessed by the spirit of Sammy Davis Jr., even though Newton is taller and

much handsomer than Davis. Additionally, in the few ballet steps Newton executes, perhaps improvised, he’s a far more impressive dancer than Davis was. Newton evokes rather than imitates Davis. His delivery of the Davis standards “Something’s Gotta Give” and “What Kind of Fool Am I?” will still remind audience members where they were the last time they heard them. Matthew Krob, who becomes Dean Martin, and Jason Plourde, the ghost of Frank Sinatra, are divided in their approaches. Even though he does not have

to, Krob is highly credible with Martin’s speech patterns, ubiquitous booze gags, and feature numbers like “Volare.” Plourde is an excellent articulate tenor but never attempts Sinatra’s sang froid panache. Blaire Baker, the sole chick (to use a period term) in the production, transforms before our eyes from a repressed nerd to voluptuous Angie, sounding like Peggy Lee. And Marcus Goldhaber as Vic, the suicidal bartender from the opening, ends the show with vocals to match the best of them. SNT

Hailed as the “funniest farce ever written” and a “festival of delirium,” Noises Off is a rollicking treat.

THE FAIR IN PHOTOS By Michael Davis

The really big news for this year’s New York State Fair happened after the event ended: On Sept. 4 Gov. Andrew Cuomo finally appointed Troy Waffner director of the fair, following five years as “acting director.” And what Team Waffner has done during that time certainly qualifies as no “act,” but the real fair deal, as they have shepherded numerous changes across the entire fairgrounds. Fairgoers have responded big time, with attendance records breaking every year. So here’s one last look at some of the fair’s midway attractions and its annual sand sculpture, all of which will be back next August. .

The New York State Fair’s free concert slate at Chevy Court continued to lure thousands to the venue, with spillover crowds for ZZ Top (33,000) and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie (40,000). Yet for local-music fans, the court’s most memorable show was surely the reunion of Syracuse-based, 1970s-era band Jukin’ Bone, as the group delivered tracks from their recent CD Unfinished Business as well as favorites “Whiskey Woman” and the encore of “Cara Lynn.” Other Chevy Court highlights included the energetic country-rock of Big & Rich, and the surprise appearance of Dave Hanson and Steve Carlson, two of the Hanson hockey players from the 1977 movie Slap Shot, as they introduced the musical talents of the Hanson brothers.

Spooning In Sherrill Uniquely unconventional patterns distinguish the stainless steel flatware from Liberty Tabletop BY MARGARET MCCORMICK

M 12

any of us are committed to buying locally grown produce and handmade, artisan food products. Now let’s give some consideration — with a spoonful of local pride — to the utensils with which we can choose to eat those foods.

Liberty Tabletop, a division of Sherrill Manufacturing, Inc., is the only manufacturer of stainless steel flatware in the United States. It’s made in Central New York, in Sherrill (“the Silver City”), to be exact, and sold directly to consumers online. Inviting a Liberty design to the table takes eating local to a whole other level. “We like to call it ‘factory to table,’” says Gregory Owens, who co-founded Sherrill Manufacturing with partner Matt Roberts. Sherrill Manufacturing and its Liberty Tabletop brand grew from the smoldering embers of the former Oneida Ltd., a major manufacturer of

9.5.18 - 9.11.18 | syracusenew times.com

silver-plated and stainless steel flatware. The factory ceased operations in Sherrill in 2005, moving production mostly overseas, and Owens and Roberts began Sherrill Manufacturing the next day. Both worked for Oneida Ltd. when the company had thousands of employees and produced millions of forks, knives and spoons. Sherrill Manufacturing employs about 50 people and is making its mark on the flatware world in small bites. There was a time, not that long ago, that stainless steel flatware didn’t keep the same company at the table as starched linens and fine china and glass-

ware. But times change, Owens says, and as people dine out more frequently and host formal parties less often, things like sterling silver and silver-plated flatware have fallen out of favor. Why have something if it’s only used a few times a year? And who has time to keep silver polished properly, anyway? Another reason silverware has fallen out of favor: Men and women are getting married later (around age 30) and coming into married life after living on their own and accumulating cupboards and drawers full of kitchen gear. That has changed the direction of the wedding registry, where couples traditionally requested things like everyday and formal china and table settings. Nowadays, “one size fits all” flatware is desired. A large segment of Liberty’s customer base, Owens says, is people who want to support American manufacturing jobs and buy a product that’s made in America using American steel. These people understand that American-made goods tend to cost a bit more — and are happy to pay for them. The challenge as a company, Owens says, is to come up with fresh ideas and ways to market stainless steel flatware — which doesn’t chip, tarnish, rust or wear out — to make it more “of the moment,” even though it is made to last a lifetime. In addition to its more traditional designs, Liberty Tabletop is focusing on the development of what Owens calls “affinity patterns,”’ or flatware designs that tap into themes that resonate with people and speak to their interests. For example, add a touch of The Walking Dead and Day of the Dead to the table with Liberty’s Calavera pattern. This eye-catching design, sprinkled with skulls, should appeal to zombie fans and those who want to set their tables with a

contemporary flourish. A recent post on Instagram shows Liberty’s Calavera flatware with one of American-made Fiestaware’s Skull and Vine china offerings. The Old Harbor pattern, etched with anchors, is intended to appeal to people who want to bring a taste of coastal or lake living to the table. The Celtic pattern, featuring ancient symbols, has quickly become one of the company’s top sellers — so much so that it has sold out several times, Owens says. Designs in the Celtic sets include the Trinity Knot, Tree of Life, Five Fold (five interlocking circles), Triskelion (triple spiral) and Awen (three rays or three flames). The Flame pattern, inspired by the furnaces that keep the Sherrill Manufacturing factory running, makes a statement for both casual (think barbecue) and more formal dining. Prices for these new designs start at about $69.95 for a 20-piece set (service for four) that includes four each of dinner forks, salad/dessert forks, knives, soup spoons and regular spoons. Other patterns and treatments are in the works, Owens says. Liberty recently completed prototypes for 1960s-inspired “Daisy and Peace” flatware, with flowers and peace symbols, and may someday introduce tinted flatware. More traditional designs aren’t going away: The company offers dozens of them. When the former Hotel Syracuse was under renovation and on track to reopen as the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, management reached out to Liberty Tabletop, requested samples and eventually decided to use Liberty’s Betsy Ross pattern throughout the hotel. The pattern is simple, yet elegant, with a teardrop shape and mirror finish. It’s also in service at the White House.

Chuck Anthony, the hotel’s food and beverage director, says the Betsy Ross pattern works well for formal functions in the Grand Ballroom and is equally at home in the chic Eleven Waters restaurant and in Shaughnessy’s Irish Pub. “It is a very versatile pattern,” Anthony says. “Using one pattern was an operational decision that allows us to shift inventory around the building as needed.” Considering and ultimately choosing Liberty is also in keeping with the hotel’s commitment to sourcing within the community. “The topic of our flatware often comes

up when explaining the restoration of the hotel and our commitment to local partnerships,” Anthony says. “We have wines from the Finger Lakes, spirits from all over New York, and, of course, beer brewed around town. That conversation always inevitably leads to the flatware.” For more information on the company and its made-in-America partners for table, kitchen and beyond, visit liberty tabletop.com. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19) Now is an excellent

time to feel and explore and understand and even appreciate your sadness. To get you in the mood, here’s a list of sadnesses from novelist Jonathan Safran Foer: sadness of the could-have-been; sadness of being misunderstood; sadness of having too many options; sadness of being smart; sadness of awkward conversations; sadness of feeling the need to create beautiful things; sadness of going unnoticed; sadness of domesticated birds; sadness of arousal being an unordinary physical state; sadness of wanting sadness.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Do you have any

feral qualities lurking deep down inside you? Have you ever felt a mad yearning to communicate using howls and yips instead of words? When you’re alone, do you sometimes dispense with your utensils and scoop the food off your plate with your fingers? Have you dreamed of running through a damp meadow under the full moon for the sheer ecstasy of it? Do you on occasion experience such strong erotic urges that you feel like you could weave your body and soul together with the color green or the sound of a rain-soaked river or the moon rising over the hills? I ask these questions, Taurus, because now is an excellent time to draw on the instinctual wisdom of your feral qualities.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) “Close some doors

today,” writes novelist Paulo Coelho. “Not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because they lead you nowhere.” I endorse his advice for your use, Gemini. In my astrological opinion, you’ll be wise to practice the rough but fine art of saying NO. It’s time for you to make crisp decisions about where you belong and where you don’t; about where your future fulfillment is likely to thrive and where it won’t; about which relationships deserve your sage intimacy and which tend to push you in the direction of mediocrity.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) To casual observ-

ers you may seem to be an amorphous hodgepodge, or a simmering mess of semi-interesting confusion, or an amiable dabbler headed in too many directions at once. But in my opinion, casual observers would be wrong in that assessment. What’s closer to the symbolic truth about you is an image described by poet Carolyn Forché: grapes that are ripening in the fog. Here’s another image that resonates with your current state: sea turtle eggs gestating beneath the sand on a misty ocean beach. One further metaphor for you: the bright yellow flowers of the evening primrose plant, which only bloom at night.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) I want to make sure that

the groove you’re in doesn’t devolve into a rut. So I’ll ask you unexpected questions to spur your imagination in unpredictable directions. Ready? 1. How would you describe the untapped riches in the shadowy part of your personality? 2. Is there a rare object you’d like to own because it would foster your feeling that the world has magic and miracles? 3. Imagine the perfect party you’d love to attend and how it might change your life for the better. 4. What bird most reminds you of yourself? 5. What’s your most evocative and inspiring taboo daydream? 6. In your past, were there ever experiences that made you cry for joy in ways that felt almost orgasmic? How might you attract or induce a catharsis like that sometime soon?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) By volume, the

Amazon is the largest river in the world. But where does it originate? Scientists have squabbled about that issue for more than 300 years. Everyone agrees the source is in southwestern Peru. But is it the Apurímac River? The Marañón? The Mantaro? There are good arguments in favor of each. Let’s use this question as a poetic subtext as we wonder and meditate about the origin of your lifeforce, Virgo. As is the case for the Amazon, your source has long been mysterious. But I suspect that’s going to change during the next 14 months. And the clarification process begins soon.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) When Warsan Shire

was a child, she immigrated to the United Kingdom with her Somalian parents. Now she’s a renowned poet who writes vividly about refugees, immigrants and other marginalized people. To provide support and inspiration for the part of you that feels like an exile or fugitive or displaced person, and in accordance with current astrological omens, I offer you two quotes by Shire. 1. “I belong deeply to myself.” 2. “Document the moments you feel most in love with yourself—what you’re wearing, who you’re around, what you’re doing. Recreate and repeat.”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “Once in a while came a moment when everything seemed to have something to say to you.” So says a character in Alice Munro’s short story “Jakarta.” Now I’m using that message as the key theme of your horoscope. Why? Because you’re at the peak of your ability to be reached, to be touched, to be communicated with. You’re willing to be keenly receptive. You’re strong enough to be deeply influenced. Is it because you’re so firmly anchored in your understanding and acceptance of who you are?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) In 1928, novelist Virginia Woolf wrote a letter to her friend Saxon Sidney Turner. “I am reading six books at once, the only way of reading,” she confided, “since one book is only a single unaccompanied note, and to get the full sound, one needs 10 others at the same time.” My usual inclination is to counsel you Sagittarians to focus on one or two important matters rather than on a multitude of semi-important matters. But in accordance with current astrological omens, I’m departing from tradition to suggest you adopt Woolf’s approach to books as your approach to everything. Your life in the coming weeks should be less like an acoustic ballad and more like a symphony for 35 instruments.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Not many

goats can climb trees, but there are daredevils in Morocco that do. They go in quest of the delicious olive-like berries that grow on argan trees. The branches on which they perch may be 30 feet off the ground. I’m naming them as your power creature for the coming weeks. I think you’re ready to ascend higher in search of goodies. You have the soulful agility necessary to transcend your previous level of accomplishment.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) From 49-45

B.C., civil war wracked the Roman Republic. Julius Caesar led forces representing the common people against armies fighting for the aristocracy’s interests. In 45 B.C., Caesar brought a contingent of soldiers to Roman territory in North Africa, intent on launching a campaign against the enemy. As the general disembarked from his ship, he accidentally slipped and fell. Thinking fast, he exclaimed, “Africa, I have tight hold of you!” and clasped the ground, thus implying he had lowered himself on purpose in a ritual gesture of conquest. In this way, he converted an apparent bad omen into a positive one. And indeed, he won the ensuing battle, which was the turning point that led to ultimate victory and the war’s end. That’s good role modeling for you right now.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Below are sweet

words I’ve borrowed from poets I love. I invite you to use them to communicate with anyone who is primed to become more lyrically intimate with you. The time is right for you to reach out! 1. “You look like a sea of gems.” (Qahar Aasi) 2. “I love you with what in me is unfinished.” (Robert Bly) 3. “Yours is the light by which my spirit’s born.” (e.e. cummings) 4. “Tell me the most exquisite truths you know.” (Barry Hannah) 5. “It’s very rare to know you, very strange and wonderful.” (F. Scott Fitzgerald) 6. “When you smile like that you are as beautiful as all my secrets.” (Anne Carson) 7. Everything you say is “like a secret voice speaking straight out of my own bones.” (Sylvia Plath)
