The Zoological Wildlife Conservation Center in Rainier, Ore., is offering sleepovers in its sloth sanctuary. The visit includes a tent with a cot and satellite TV, in case the animals are being too sloth-like. Visitors, who pay $600 double occupancy for the 12-hour experience, are asked to whisper so as not to stress out the sloths.

French performance artist Abraham Poincheval managed to hatch nine chicken eggs in April by incubating them himself for three weeks inside a glass vivarium at Paris’ Palais de Tokyo contemporary art museum. SU will honor the late Dick MacPherson and his undefeated 1987 team this Saturday

Anyone who has followed Syracuse University football since the 1980s knows there’s only one “Coach Mac.” This Saturday, Sept. 9, Syracuse will commemorate beloved coach Dick MacPherson’s signature accomplishment when it recognizes the 30th anniversary of Coach Mac’s undefeated 1987 team. Captains Don McPherson and Paul Frase and many other members of that team will return to the Carrier Dome for the festivities, which will most certainly include a tribute to MacPherson, who died Aug. 8 at age 86.

Against this celebratory background, the 2017 Orange will play its second game of the season at 3:30 p.m. against Middle Tennessee State University. And while Syracuse fans know there’s only one Coach Mac, they’re wondering if current coach Dino Babers can be the one who finally duplicates Mac’s achievement of returning Syracuse football to national prominence.

The jury is still out on Babers, who’s in his second year at Syracuse after successful stints at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green. Babers’ first squad in 2016 finished 4-8; that’s the same record as 2015 under embattled coach Scott Shafer.

Shafer, by the way, is the defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee. Think he’s not fired up for Saturday’s game?

offenses. But the 2016 Orange scored less than the 2015 team (25.7 to 27.2 points per game), and the 2016 squad allowed more points, too (38.6 to 31.0). The Orange opened this season with a 50-7 rout of Football Championship Subdivision-member Central Connecticut State Sept. 1 at the Dome.

It takes time for players to absorb the nuances of Babers’ offense and for his coaching staff to recruit the players he wants for his system. At Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, Babers’ offenses started to click around the fourth game of the second season and they became among the most explosive offenses in the nation.

Syracuse’s fourth game this season is against traditional national powerhouse Louisiana State University, which entered this season ranked No. 13 in the AP Poll. And therein lies the difficulty of Babers’ task for Season No. 2 as the Orange plays one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. Syracuse will face five teams ranked in the preseason Top 20: No. 3 Florida State; No. 5 Clemson; LSU; No. 16 Louisville; and No. 18 Miami. And all 11 of Syracuse’s Football Bowl Subdivision opponents starting with Middle Tennessee appeared in a bowl game last season.

Continued from page 4 Division with Clemson, Florida State and Louisville. SU faced a similar uphill climb in the early 1980s as MacPherson’s teams went 4-6-1, 2-9, 6-5, 6-5, 7-5 and 8-6 before the breakthrough 1987 season.

It’s worth noting that Babers did have a Mac-like moment last season, when the Orange upset No. 17 Virginia Tech 31-17 at the Dome. Although not quite as shocking, it did bring back memories of Syracuse’s 17-9 upset of No. 1 Nebraska in 1984 at the Dome. And, when we look back 10 years from now, we may remember that win and Babers’ epic “Whose house? Our house” post-game locker room speech that was captured by ESPN as the moment when Syracuse started lifting the cloud that had hovered over the program since MacPherson’s successor, Paul Pasqualoni, was fired after the 2004 season.

From Coach to Legend

It was certainly a different time in the 1980s and you wonder if MacPherson, with a 12-20-1 record after three seasons, would have been a given a fourth year if that happened in this what-have-youdone-for-me-lately era. The win over Nebraska came in the fourth game of his fourth season, and the Orange went 47-25-3 during the rest of MacPherson’s 10-year tenure before he left to coach the NFL’s New England Patriots.

In 1987, with McPherson as his quarterback, Coach Mac led the Orange to the second undefeated season in program history. (The first, in 1959, resulted in Syracuse’s first and only national championship.) The 1987 team went 11-0 in the regular season and tied Auburn 16-16 in the Sugar Bowl as Tigers coach Pat Dye opted for a 30-yard field goal on the last play of the game rather than going for the win.

Dye’s decision stood in stark contrast to MacPherson’s decision just weeks earlier to go for the 2-point conversion rather than settling for a tie in the Orange’s final

regular-season game against West Virginia at the Dome. Michael Owens carried an option pitch from McPherson into the end zone to give the Orange a 32-31 win that elevated MacPherson to legendary status in this community and beyond.

MacPherson was the consensus pick for national coach of the year in 1987, earning the recognition from 12 different organizations. Syracuse was ranked fourth in the final AP poll, its highest end-of-season ranking since 1959.

The Orange went 10-2 and finished 13th in 1988, and in MacPherson’s final three seasons Syracuse recorded bowl wins over LSU, Georgia and Arizona. He left Syracuse with a 66-46-4 record, including 3-1-1 in bowl games, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

To honor MacPherson, the 2017 players are wearing a blue patch with “Mac” inscribed in Orange on their jerseys and that same design is displayed at the 25-yard

lines on Ernie Davis Field at the Dome.

“Our university and community will remember Coach Mac forever,” said SU director of athletics John Wildhack. “His legacy will live on in every person who had the opportunity to meet him or be in his presence. The patch on our uniforms and on the Carrier Dome field is a tribute to the lasting impact he had on Syracuse University.”

Orange redshirt freshman center Airon Servais said he’s looking forward to meeting the players from the 1987 team who return this weekend.

“When you have a type of team that’s so successful, it’s always good to hopefully meet those guys and absorb as much knowledge as we can,” Servais said. “Obviously, they knew what they were doing back then so it’s always good to get that knowledge and hopefully we can speak to some of those guys.”

son, a former SU center and Coach Mac’s grandson. “I know,” Servais said of Macky, “that he’s a really great coach and a better guy.”

Just like his grandfather, who returned to Syracuse after retiring from coaching and worked as a radio analyst for Syracuse football games while continuing to make a positive impact throughout the community as the rare celebrity who exhibited warmth and a friendly sense of humor to everyone he met.

Making An Impression

Syracuse sophomore running back Moe Neal said he hopes the Orange puts on a good show Saturday for the fans and the returning members of the 1987 team.

“It’ll be great to impress those guys,” Neal said. “I know we’re going to come out with a great attitude and Coach Shafer’s coming back to town, so it’s going to be a good game.”

The first goal of Babers’ rebuilding process is a .500 record and a bowl game.

If the Orange is going to have a chance this season, it needs to start 3-0 against Central Connecticut, Middle Tennessee and Central Michigan — all at the Dome.

After that, the Orange will need to find three wins among North Carolina State on the road and Pittsburgh, Wake Forest and Boston College at home, unless SU can pull off another major upset against one of the ranked teams.

Middle Tennessee, which plays in Conference USA, finished 8-5 last season and ranked 12th in the nation in scoring (39.7 points per game) while averaging 517.7 yards per game. But the Blue Raiders lost their opener 28-6 to Vanderbilt as the offense sputtered and Shafer’s defense allowed Commodores quarterback Kyle Shurmur to throw for 296 yards and three touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Eric Dungey remains Syracuse’s most dynamic player as he accounted for five touchdowns and 379 total yards in the romp over Central Connecticut. Dungey completed 28 of 36 passes

for 328 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for a team-high 51 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns. “It’s amazing to see the growth in people, especially Dungey,� said senior wide receiver Steve Ishmael, who caught 12 passes for 134 yards against Central Connecticut. “Freshman year, he came in and he was petite. He was skinny. Now, he is huge, he’s a big guy. Sometimes I get jealous looking at him. “It’s been great just playing with him and having him be my quarterback,� Ishmael said. “He’s consistent. Hopefully we make a bowl game this year and just keep on pushing forward.�

For that to happen, Dungey will have to stay on the field. That has been a problem as he has missed seven games the past two seasons because of injuries. Dungey plays with the reckless abandon of a kid on the playground, and he was at it again against Central Connecticut.

Babers said Dungey plays better that way, so it’s a fine line between letting him do his thing and trying to keep him from taking the big hits that lead to injuries. “I hope it’s out of his system,� Babers said. “I kind of went up to him, ‘Are you done? Have you got it out of your system?

A whole season’s worth?’ He just needs to be smart. Obviously, it’s very difficult to change when it comes to that stuff. That’s kind of who he is.�

Dungey said he is being smart; we’re just not recognizing it. “I just try to get as many yards as I can (and) trying to be smart at the same time,� he said. “It’s different taking a hit from a 290-pound (defensive) end rather than a (lighter) cornerback.�

Dungey’s 300-yard passing game was the seventh of his career, tying Ryan Nassib for the most in school history. After spending three years with the New York Giants, Nassib joined the New Orleans Saints and was cut at the end of training camp. “It’s awesome. I have nothing but respect for Ryan Nassib,� Dungey said. “His picture is in the weight room so I’m always looking up at that. It’s kind

of some motivation and he’s a great guy.

From Syracuse football, he’s about the only guy I knew. I’m from Oregon so I didn’t know much about Syracuse, but it’s awesome.�

There were a few red flags from the lopsided opening win: The Syracuse offensive and defensive lines failed to dominate their counterparts from an FCS team that finished 2-9 last season and was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference. The Orange running backs ran for 104 yards on 31 carries (an average of 3.4 yards per carry), and the defense did not record any sacks until garbage time, although it did limit the Blue Devils to just 167 total yards.

Also, Syracuse redshirt junior safety Antwan Cordy left the game in the first quarter and returned on crutches and wearing a boot on his right foot. No announcement had been made regarding the extent of the injury as of Sunday.

Cordy suffered a season-ending injury in the second game last year and the Orange defense was never the same. SU has more defensive backfield depth this year, but losing Cordy for an extended period would still be a huge loss.

Overall, the Orange remains a team in transition as it continues to field a mix of Babers’ and Shafer’s recruits. While fans are hoping that Babers can somehow build the program to a Mac-like 1987 level, he’s focused on this week and looking for signs that his team is figuring out his system. When that comes, he believes the success and bowl games will follow. “Overall, I thought it was a good, solid game. Football teams grow the most during their first and second games,�

Babers said. “We’re looking for a lot of growth coming into our next game vs.

Middle Tennessee.�

MI CASITA CREATES EMPANADA FEVER ON THE NORTH SIDE

J

ulia Mendoza wanted to open a Spanish food restaurant on Lodi Street because she felt the North Side neighborhood needed a restaurant. Her instincts were right: Drive by at lunch or suppertime and you might see a line snaking out the door at Mi Casita.

“There’s not a lot of restaurants over here and we felt like opening something for the people here,’’ Mendoza said after a recent weekday lunch rush. “People say, ‘Finally, a restaurant.’”

Mi Casita, which means “my little house,’’ opened in April at 1614 Lodi St. on the corner of East Division Street, across the street from DiLauro’s Italian Bakery. The building was the longtime home of Sorrento’s Restaurant and more recently the Red Dragon House, a restaurant serving Bhutanese and Nepali food.

The North Side is home to people from many nations, and Mi Casita appears to be filling a void and meeting demand for the food of Mexico, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Cuba and Guatemala.

Business has been good, Mendoza says, and people appreciate authentic, home-style cooking at affordable prices. “We have five stars,’’ she says, referring to reviews on Facebook and Yelp.

The menu at Mi Casita is short and sweet, with Mexican food (tacos, pupusas, quesadillas, tamales and flautas, which are like crispy fried tacos) and several sandwiches, including a Cuban

and one with ham, cheese, egg and bacon. Empanadas, or fried turnovers, are available with a variety of fillings, including chicken, ground beef, sweet plantains, fried plantains and pizza sauce with mozzarella cheese. Combination plates are served with your choice of rice, beans and salad as well as your choice of meat, which includes chicken stew, roast pork and tilapia.

For lunch on a recent weekday, I enjoyed an order of pork tacos (three for $6). The pork in the tacos was slow roasted and tender, garnished simply with chopped raw onion and cilantro and served with a fresh green salsa. A drink made with tamarind ($2) was a tangy, refreshing counterpoint.

Mi Casita also offers daily specials, ranging from baked ziti and Cuban rice on Mondays to barbecued ribs on Fridays to caldo (beef soup) on Sundays. The restaurant is clean and bright, with a limited amount of seating. Everything on the menu is available for takeout.

As the days grow shorter, summer theater companies roll out titles many audiences may not know. Two are making area premieres but both have familiar contents.

Over at Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse through Sept.

16, the musical version of Ghost, which ran only 136 performances in 2012, adapts the 1990 movie, one of the all-time popular romantic flicks, and still a hot property on Netflix. For Cortland Repertory Theatre’s season closer, running through Sept. 16, Roger Bean, the master of nostalgia jukebox musicals (The Andrews Brothers), reappears with Life Could Be a Dream, with mostly doo-wop hits from the 1950s. Curiously, Alex North and Hy Zaret’s “Unchained Melody” is featured prominently in both shows.

Bruce Joel Rubin, who scripted the Patrick Swayze-Demi Moore movie, also adapted the stage version, which originally appeared in the United Kingdom at the Nottingham Opera House. The two composers, Dave Stewart, much associated with Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics, and Glenn Ballard, Grammy-winner for “Believe,” had never written a stage show before.

Maybe that’s why the hyper-plaintive “Unchained Melody,” borrowed from the 1990 movie (and the forgotten 1955 B-movie Unchained before that), is the most memorable number in the show.

Still, Merry-Go-Round’s current production of Ghost: The Musical yields many rewards, some of them unexpected. Much

as the main plot is well served by attractive, emotive leads, including girlfriend Molly (Sarah Ellis), the deceased Sam (Derek Carley) and even the shifty best friend Carl (Ben Maters), the reluctant African-American storefront psychic Oda Mae Brown (Allyson Kaye Daniel) steals every scene she’s in. In the movie, of course, it was Whoopi Goldberg in this role, and she copped an Academy Award. Daniel never mimics Goldberg and creates a masterwork of sass and attitude.

Musically, this provokes a cultural dialogue in which the black music, some featuring Oda’s Supremes-like assistants Clara (Aurelia Michael) and Louise (Denielle Marie Gray), consistently get the upper hand with numbers like “Are You a Believer?” and “I’m Outta Here.”

A second musical surprise is an ironic, almost Noel Coward-like “You Gotta Let Go Now,” by the charming, white-suited Hospital Ghost (Eric Jon Mahlum). The song also smooths out the segue from Sam’s violent death to passages of laugh-outloud comedy. Director Stephen Brotebeck, a movement specialist on Broadway, makes the song an act of mime.

Like so many stage plays based on movies, Ghost calls for about 50 scene changes in two hours. The skills of scenic designer Czerton Lim and lighting designer Dan Ozminkowski produce a magic show worthy of applause even without a single musical number.

takes place in the mythical small town of Springfield, venue of The Marvelous Wonderettes, Roger Bean’s hit at Cortland Rep last summer. As it is taking place at the end of 1959, it mines some of the same musical veins as the once-ubiquitous Forever Plaid, but comes up with different nuggets. Clothing signals the difference: Forever Plaid features tartan blazers, while Life Could Be a Dream favors the black leather jacket. If Forever Plaid commemorates the music of Richie Cunningham’s era, Dream revives all of Fonzie’s hits, like “Get a Job” and “Earth Angel.”

Adam Crinson’s gloriously tacky set, a paneled basement rec room with bowling trophies and red plastic bar stools, sets the tone. The 1950s, even more than the 1970s, were a decade taste forgot.

Two dateless teenage boys, regular-guy Denny (Owen Beans) and his comic foil pal Eugene (Patrick Brady), listen to local AM station WOPR (“Whopper”) and aspire to performing greatness. Denny’s offstage mother continually nags him through an intercom to get serious and quit wasting his time. (The actress playing the mother speaks in a Bronxy accent and is never named.) Then Wally (Chris Withers) shows up wearing a white paper

cap with a fast-food order. Distinguishing him from the other two, Wally also sings in a choir and often brings up devotional music.

Together they are a trio and begin with “Sh-Boom,” the ultimate doo-wop tune, with one lyric from the song providing the show’s title. Cultural historians, who really have worked on this, tell us that doo-wop originated in black America but was shorn of those roots as the music made it into the suburbs. It is characterized by group harmony, a wide range of vocal parts, a simple beat, and nonsense syllables, like “Doo-Wah,” or “Rama Lama Ding Dong,” the show’s finale.

The trio becomes a quartet when they are joined by tall, hunkish Skip (Corbin Williams), a grease monkey from the wrong side of the tracks who introduces the black leather jacket. And Skip is enamored with tall, gorgeous redhead Lois (Sarah Treanor), who wears A-line skirts with lots of crinolines.

Director-choreographer Matthew Couvillon puts all five players through those dance routines that drew audiences to Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. Life Could Be a Dream is a fun, tuneful way to cap the Cortland Repertory season. SNT

The New York State Fair got lucky with its new 13-day run, thanks to picture-perfect, non-muggy weather dominated mostly by azure-blue skies, except for some pesky rainy conditions on Sunday, Sept. 3. The impressive turnout was also aided by several days when admission was only a dollar, as attendance handily cruised past the 1 million mark. Which, of course, meant occasional sellouts at the baked potato and 25-cent milk fair stops.

There were some glitches along the way, such as the decision to discontinue the daily programs that used to be available at all entry points. Instead there were simple printouts of listings found at guest relations spots sprinkled throughout the fairgrounds, but many fairgoers did not know of their existence.

That might explain why it seemed like Hilby the Skinny Juggler Boy had joined the witness protection program.

Many fans couldn’t find him after he was relocated from the Chevy Court perimeter to the wheelchair basketball court near the Coliseum. For that matter, cnycentral meteorologist Wayne Mahar was apparently grounded since no flying discs were hurled after the evening newscasts.

But plenty of things went decisively right this year, as the fair fixed a number

of wrongs that happened in 2016. Last year’s bumpy gravel toward the west end resembled something encountered on the Oregon Trail, but new paving took care of that problem.

Curiously, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was not at the fair to hail the attendance record on Labor Day, as he did last year when he sledgehammered a celebratory block of ice. Yet before the Labor Day concert commenced with Kool and the Gang, acting director Troy Waffner and his crew took their bows in front of a jammed Chevy Court. Waffner has often sidestepped praise, citing that putting the fair together is truly a team effort. Given the record-setting attendance, however, maybe it’s time for the governor to take “acting” from Waffner’s director title, because what he’s accomplishing is certainly not an act. SNT

JUST JOE CD SUPPORTS SUICIDE AWARENESS When Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell committed suicide on May 18 following a Detroit concert, Joe Altier, known to local music fans as Just Joe, woke up to his phone exploding with texts of the news.

“There had been lots of other celebrity deaths recently, but this one was different,” he recalls. “It didn’t register. It was crazy to see that someone, like with Robin Williams, someone with the world by the balls, so revered, all the money in the world . . . Mental illness shows that there is no discrimination as to where you are in life or who you are. It doesn’t care.”

Altier was so shaken that he soon created a video of his cover version of the Soundgarden track “Black Hole Sun” and put it on YouTube. People took to it and Dave Frisina even played the song on his Soulshine program, airing Sunday afternoons on WXTL-FM 105.9 (The Rebel).

Altier then realized that he needed to give back. So he recorded three Cornell songs, “Black Hole Sun,” “Can’t Change Me” (a Cornell solo) and “Like a Stone” (Audioslave) with plans to create the fundraising EP Black Hole Sun for an organization. But he wasn’t sure which organization until he learned about Two Brothers’ Light. The local group promotes suicide prevention practices and supports those dealing with the loss of a loved one due to suicide or those struggling with mental health issues themselves.

“It’s a real roots organization and I knew that my money going to something

like this would make more of an impact than if it went to some huge organization,” Altier explains. “These people are in my backyard.”

With his first check of $700, the organization was able to buy merchandise for the first time. “They’ve never been able to have merch to sell at fundraisers,” he says. “Now they do.”

The CD sells for $10, although buyers have been stepping up with much larger donations. “A lady handed me an envelope,” he says. “I assumed it was $10 for the CD. I opened it and it was $100.”

Altier hopes the CD will start conversations about the reality of mental illness, something he dealt with at an early age.

Just after he left college, one of his roommates committed suicide. He had even been a teen counselor, helping others to not make the decision he eventually did.

“That was my first introduction to it,” Altier says. “At that time in my life, I was pissed. I didn’t look at suicide like I do now. I saw it as cowardly and weak. But as I’ve gotten older and struggled for two decades with my own (anxiety) disorder, I have a completely different outlook.

They’re people who are sick. It’s no different than having cancer or some kind of brain tumor. But people don’t want to talk about it.

“I didn’t want to admit my panic disorder. It was embarrassing. But as I get older, I wish people would talk about it more.

When you have cancer, you talk about it. Everyone rallies around that person.

When someone puts it out that they’re depressed, people think they’re just crying wolf. We don’t rally around in the same way. It’s a completely different view and I hope that things that are happening with large celebrities change that a little bit.”

Cornell was also heavily medicated during his tour, something Altier can’t help but question. “I saw the performance video of the night before he died,” he says, “and I got upset. Here’s our wonderful health care system: over-medicating or giving medication to someone who’s a former addict. That has adverse effects. To make it more crazy, it’s like Pink Floyd’s The Wall. You watch Pink fall apart, but then it’s like, we need to get this guy on stage tonight. So we’ll pump him full of drugs and get him back on the stage.

“I’m not sure Cornell was in the right mind to be out there anymore, but hundreds of people were counting on him to get on stage. It’s one thing if the drummer can’t, but if Cornell doesn’t there is no Soundgarden. You can’t imagine that kind of pressure.

“I remember being on the road. It’s awesome, but you have these 23 hours of

the day where you’re really just sitting around. You eat like shit, sleep like shit and drink too much. And I haven’t sold millions of records or had that success, but I can relate. That is a brutal life. It can beat you down and take a toll on you.”

Altier remembers Cornell as an inspiration to him throughout his career.

“Soundgarden was always a little bit different,” he says. “They had such an edge. ‘Black Hole Sun’ is like a Beatles tune. If it came out in 1967, it would have been on Revolver. And Cornell’s voice was ungodly. His solo album, Euphoria Morning (1999), still flies under the radar and it’s a top five album of all time for me. I thought, ‘This guy is a god as a singer and songwriter, so talented I can’t even wrap my brain around it.’ But you can’t write songs like that without being in a dark place in life.”

SALT CITY SUPERGROUP READY TO ROCK The History of Syracuse Rock’n’Roll series has been responsible for luring Central New York musicians back into the spotlight for reunions of their long-ago bands. For the next edition, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 10, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Holiday Inn, 441 Electronics Parkway, Liverpool, series producer Ron Wray will take a different approach.

This installment is dubbed the “Classic Canteen,” a nod to Syracuse rock fans of a certain age who fondly recall taking in the Sunday-afternoon Teen Canteen shows during the early 1960s at the Three Rivers Inn nightclub in Phoenix. Instead of gathering an act from yesteryear for a long-overdue reunion, Wray has assembled two separate supergroup incarnations of the History of Syracuse Music All-Star Band.

The first batch will feature vocalists Ted Storto and Frank Rhodes, supported by Mike Ferrante, Buke Babikian and Shane Storto. Expect versions of “Mustang Sally,” “Summertime Blues,” “I Want to Do It,” “Time Won’t Let Me” and other songs during this set.

The second group offers vocalists Dave Novak, Don Shoudy and Ed McBarron, powered by ace drummer Dave Hanlon, plus Bill Weiss and Shane Storto, for renditions of “Burning Love,” “Runaway,” “Spooky” and more. CLASSROOMS NEED TO EMBRACE A HIGH-TECH FUTURE

H

ere’s a clip from an August 1998 CNN article with the headline “Does technology make the grade?”

“For most baby boomers, a state-ofthe-art classroom meant an overhead projector, a public-address system and a television set wheeled in occasionally for an educational program. Now take a look at schools in Red Hook, N.Y., where every teacher has a laptop computer and every classroom has access to the World Wide Web.” A month after that article appeared, I first stepped into a classroom as a kindergartner. Saving Private Ryan was playing in theaters, the Labor Day storm had delayed my first day of school and internet access was considered state-of-the-art.

As a new student, I was introduced to the technology that was being used to do the cool things mentioned in that article — breakthroughs like Windows 95 and Netscape.

It is incredible to recognize the true innovation of computer technology in our nation’s classrooms in the last 19 years.

I started school using floppy discs for class assignments and finished school using flash drives, and then Google Docs.

I went from using cassette tape players and film cameras to CDs, mp3 files, digital cameras and cellphones for special school projects. By my junior year of high school, those overhead projectors used in schools since the late 1950s and early 1960s had all but been replaced by smart board devices.

As many children across the country return to school this week, I found

myself thinking about how crucial my mastering of new technologies during such a 19-year transformation was to shaping my career. After all, my job title is currently “digital producer.” My daily duties involve websites, social media like Facebook and Twitter and user-generated content: all things that didn’t even exist in 1998 or are vastly different now than they were back then.

That’s why we must do our best to ensure that our nation’s schools are keeping updated with the latest technological innovations. We need to keep finding new and better ways to teach our youth and properly prepare them for a computerized workforce and globalized economy.

President Bill Clinton’s Technology Literacy Challenge called for every classroom in the nation to be equipped with modern multimedia computers and internet connections by 2001. We must continue to set similar goals to invest in new technologies as they become available and ensure our schools have the necessary infrastructure and environments for those technologies.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s well-supported $2 billion Smart Schools Bond Act is a large part of that investment. In July, the governor announced approval of 154 more projects, called “Smart Schools Investment Plans,” that are aimed at reimagining teaching and learning at some of the state’s schools where they are needed.

Projects include $43.3 million for school

connectivity projects, $40.6 million for classroom technology purchases, $15.6 million for high-tech security projects and $3.7 million to construct pre-kindergarten classrooms and to replace transportable classrooms. Several Central New York schools were selected this year to receive funds for those projects, including Auburn, Canandaigua, Cortland and Fulton.

Let’s hope other states are setting similar initiatives for their schools so no one gets left behind.

It’s not just about knowing the technology for tomorrow’s jobs, either. Technology can help make students more engaged and interested. And in a time when standardized tests seem to carry so much weight, we could sure use more of that.

Making use of up-and-coming innovations, from virtual reality to 3D printing, can completely change the way students look at school and, as a result, their future endeavors.

That’s nothing to sneeze at, because it’s one giant cycle. If certain technologies in classrooms can inspire a student, that student may go on to invent their own kind of daily-use technology that will someday be a part of classrooms for another generation of young people to enjoy and learn from. After all, the world will surely be different 19 years from now.

We have an incredible opportunity to use technology to teach our schools’ students in a way unlike ever before. We would be foolish not to take advantage of it. SNT

GROUP SHOW FEATURES 14 FEMALE ARTISTS Plenty of artworks line the Syracuse Tech Garden’s hallway for Wonder Woman: Directions in Art by 14 Female Central New York Artists. The show presents abstract pieces and illustrations, fantasy works and depictions of trees, collages and digital prints. It’s a sweeping group show co-curated by Steve Niland and Sofia Marquez Panigua.

Maria Rizzo’s acrylics portray trees, such as “Along the Canal,” with its rich mix of orange and green colors. “Urban Trees” both emphasizes a single tree in the foreground yet presents supporting visual details: a fence to the left, a barely visible fence to the right, a construction crane, a window in a nearby building.

Rizzo nicely communicates the interplay between the tree and its urban setting.

Eva Hunter has drastically different pieces on display. On one hand, she creates works like “Badlands,” “Adirondack Reflections” and “Fat Bottom Pond,” all of which depict landscapes or outdoor scenes. On the other, she moves into the horror genre with “Spider Tea,” in which large spiders sit around a table that holds a human head.

Several works document artists delving into themes in a non-linear way. Erin Davis’ “Past, Present, Future” doesn’t deal with time or life in traditional stages.

Instead, her acrylic depicts three branches coming together and overlapping.

The exhibition also presents abstract works by Constance Avery, including “Interrupted,” with its blend of blue, gold and purple colors. In “The Matador’s Picador,” red and green colors clash with each other, generating a sense of conflict.

Adrianna Lynch Coursen has several small paintings such as “Peaceful Glow,” “Morning Glow,” and “Still Waters,” which suggests a meeting between sky and sea. “Black Night,” a strong work, details a dark sky and conveys a sense of moodiness.

A series of archival digital prints by Alexandra Mailtais encompasses “Number Six,” which assembles the scales of justice and other objects, and otherworldly pieces like “Number Tree,” which portrays a woman within a circle amid various planets.

In “Ignited Depression,” Allison Sarenski combines a small female figure, a wedge of blue, and other colors. A second piece referencing King Midas works with gold motifs.

In addition, Caroline Locatelli has created diverse illustrations: “Grandpa Moon,” “Reaching for Space Fruit,” which portrays a female figure, and “Embezzlement,” a piece without any depiction of fraud. Instead, the word flows from a balloon.

Other works further document the exhibit’s selection of diverse works. It has room for Diana Bukowski’s “The Missing Rainbow,” which portrays a rabbit holding an umbrella and standing under a rainbow. It also samples the “Yell” series created by Karmin Schafer Hansen. In these abstract works, yell appears again and again, each time in a different format and accompanied by blue and white colors. The artist is revising and recasting, reinterpreting an idea.

Wonder Woman also presents “Tree of Life,” created by Missy Zawacki with ink,

gouache and paper, Jessica Creel’s fantasy work “The Salt Sucker,” and Renee Fair’s acrylic-and-charcoal pieces portraying plants. Also look for Prudence Haze’s acrylic, “Seer Between Worlds.”

They are part of an exhibition displaying a large number of artworks and easily integrating various styles. Wonder Woman blends abstract and non-abstract pieces, and generally presents enough pieces for viewers to get a sense of each artist’s work. Thus, it’s a successful show.

BELLY UP TO BETTER HEALTH AT BLOOM YOGA Beth Yazell remembers her very first yoga class 40 years ago like it was yesterday. The sensation she felt leaving that class was “magic,” she said, and it planted the inspiration to what would become her own Bloom Yoga & Wellness practice at 181 Kenwood Ave., Oneida.

“I left there thinking I wanted to feel that way forever,” Yazell recalled of attending that class at the Utica YWCA in 1977 when she was 18. Within a year, she earned her first certification as a yoga instructor, completing her second in 2004.

Today she is dual-certified with more than 500 hours of training and has been teaching yoga continuously since 1979.

Yazell also has a master’s degree in health services administration, and is a registered nurse, a Thai yoga massage practitioner, and a certified wellness coach. She offers yoga classes of varied intensities at Bloom Yoga & Wellness,

plus Thai yoga massage, private health coaching and private yoga coaching.

She even offers classes on belly dancing. Yazell is the leader of the Oneida-based Adi Shakti World Fusion Bellydance troupe.

Yazell created Bloom Yoga & Wellness in 2006 after teaching at several area locations, with her classes open to anyone, of any skill level. She knows people can often be discouraged when they see photos of yoga practitioners in intricate poses that are unattainable for most mortals.

But she reaches out to everyone, from the experienced yoga veterans to the newcomers. She offers a “gentle” yoga class for people of all shapes and sizes who might want to better their own health and reduce stress without the rigors of a more energetic regimen. Yoga is accessible to anyone, regardless of age, shape, or level of ability or experience, Yazell promises.

There is soft music and candlelight as she encourages all participants to respect their own limitations, telling them if something doesn’t feel right not to do it. She has foam blocks for anyone who might not be able to bend and stretch all the way to the floor at certain points in the sessions, and will even alter the pose if she notices someone struggling with it.

Every class ends with the sivasana, a rest period of simply lying on the floor as Yazell guides the class into a deep state of relaxation. This is often the participants’ favorite part of her teachings, she said.

Yazell’s yoga sessions alleviate stress, improve the quality of sleep, and even improve the immune system, she said.

Yoga is also a great beginning point for many people to form the foundation for a complete health overhaul. “It really turns into a motivator to do other things that will lead to a healthier lifestyle,” she said.

Karen Kloss of Oneida was there for her first-ever class on July 24, looking for a stress reliever. Kloss said she felt Yazell took good care of her newcomers during their session.

“It was challenging, but not unrealistic, and I didn‘t feel pressured to do anything I couldn’t do,” Kloss said. “I loved it. The relaxation part was the most beneficial to me. There is so much stress out there in the world. This is ‘me’ time.”

“Our brains are constantly in a hyper mode with everything going on around us,” agreed Yazell. “Yoga gives you the chance to drop out of it and drop into yourself, and that’s good for you.”

Lori Thorna and Betty Lyboult, also both of Oneida, joined Kloss at that gentle class; they are regulars who have been coming for about a year. “We came in as

friends together and that helps keep us both motivated,” Thorna explained. “If one of us doesn’t feel like going, the other will talk her into it.”

“I really need just to take the time to keep doing it,” Lyboult added. “I always feel so good afterward. It helps out with any aches and pains, and it is definitely relaxing.”

Yazell co-authored a Syracuse University health study for the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2010 showing the benefits of yoga on asthma patients. She hopes to earn her credentials from the International Association of Yoga Therapists in yoga therapy in the near future. That would enable her to help people with a variety of ailments, from insomnia to back pain to cancer symptoms, she said.

“Name a malady, and there is a yoga technique to remedy it,” Yazell said. “I will use all of the yoga tools to help people who are suffering.”

She teaches from the Kripalu yoga techniques, a merging of body, mind and energy. Although the majority of her class members are women, men are definitely welcome as well. No reservations need to be made, and there is no obligation to attend every session, with participants paying only for the classes they attend.

Yazell said her own mentors have inspired her with a devotion to yoga tech-

niques that transcend physical boundaries to delve into a more spiritual healing. She said her teacher came from a very mystical line, where deep states of meditation coupled with yoga techniques created a true state of grace, much like speaking in tongues.

That is an experience she wants to share with her own classes: Yoga is not just about becoming more flexible, or trimming the stomach and firming up the buttocks, but about reaching an emotional state of grace as well. This is something Yazell strives to convey to all of her students, she said, as she helps them along a traditional yoga path to wellness.

“My focus is on providing people with an authentic yoga experience,” she said.

“I am pretty much a curmudgeon that way.”
