LONDON CALLING; U.S. TEENS HANG UP It’s easy to regard London as one of the great cities of the world, an iconic metropolis brimming with history, art and culture. But that’s what teenagers are for. Teenagers remind us that visible displays of enthusiasm are for losers and that London and pretty much everything else on the planet is just OK, and only if there’s Wi-Fi. As you’re no doubt figuring out, we Kramers spent the kids’ spring break in London. We landed at Heathrow a few days after Queen Whatsherface turned a thousand. Seeing London through the eyes of teenagers was fascinating. During an entire week of family togetherness, I became acutely aware that most travel literature is written for adults and families with young children but not for teenagers and their special travel concerns. That got me thinking about publishing (without their permission, of course) The Kramer Girls Guide To London: OVERVIEW: London has a lot of old buildings and stuff (yawners) but it’s pretty good. There are a bunch of bridges and

5.4.16 - 5.10.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

a big palace. Although England typically has a king or queen, the country is actually ruled by Parliament, which is possibly the most boring thing ever. (Thank God Mom didn’t make us to go there.) There’s a big clock that they’re super proud of. Whatev. The weather is terrible so don’t bring a bathing suit or a crop top. It’s so cold and rainy in London that most people just stay indoors inventing stuff like gravity and factories and making these disgusting meat pies. They also watch a lot of Shakespeare plays (double yawners) and sit around drinking tea and wishing The Beatles would get back together. Some Beatles songs are OK, but One Direction is, like, so much better. London has many cool places to shop — there’s an Urban Outfitters! — and lots of good restaurants. But no Panera. Weird. GETTING THERE: London is a sixhour flight at least from New York City and you can’t do Snapchat, Instagram or text the whole way. The airport has free

Wi-Fi (Thank God!). If there’s a marathon going on when you arrive, you can’t take a taxi to the hotel because all the roads are closed, so you have to take a train and transfer to the Tube, which is just the name for their subway. It takes forever. (Nice planning, parentals.) Warning; You might have to share a room with your sister, which is disgusting and really unfair. We have our own rooms at home and this is supposed to be a vacation and vacations are supposed to be fun! On the plus side, your hotel room probably has Wi-Fi. STUFF TO SEE AND DO: The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel thingee that takes a half-hour to go around. It’s really cool. The perfect London itinerary is: Arrive in London. Ride on The Eye. Post photos from The Eye on Instagram. Go Shopping at Top Shop, Return to Syracuse. Go to Panera with friends. Unfortunately, your parents will force you to see other stuff, so just chill and answer “Great” when they ask you what you think. The Churchill War Rooms are kind of interesting. Winston Churchill was a famous leader who smoked cigars (gross) and, like, seriously never went to the gym. During World War II, he and the other Important British War People lived and worked in an underground fortress until they defeated Napoleon. The Tate Modern is a museum (bummah) but if you have to go to a museum, that one is the least boring. Forty-five minutes is PLENTY. One exhibit — no lie! — is a urinal. The artist didn’t even make it himself. He just decided it was art and now everyone who comes to London has to admire it, which is stupid and seriously not fair. And gross. But it’s better than the gazillions of religious paintings at the National Gallery. For some reason, painters back then insisted on making the Baby Jesus look like Project Runway host Tim Gunn. Except for a few who look like Donald Trump (yuckers). Avoid this place! GETTING AROUND: So much walking. One day my phone said we walked nine miles. It’s totally accurate because we were looking at our phones the whole time. You have to be careful as a pedestrian because people drive on the wrong side of the road. If you forget and step into the street, you are almost guaranteed to get hit by a red double-decker bus. Try to mix it up and get hit by a Big Bus, which is a special bus for tourists. At least those have Wi-Fi. SNT

MUSICAL MOMS ROCK ON MOTHER’S DAY On Sunday, May 8, celebrate Mother’s Day with a crew of musical moms including Jenny O’Hara Callaghan, Bea, Melissa Gardiner, Joanne Troy Perry and Tamaralee Shutt. The Moms That Rock concert, organized by Kathleen Mason of KMase Productions and musician Charley Orlando, runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Funk ’N Waffles Downtown, 307 S. Clinton St. Mason, who has run the KMase promotion and talent management company for three years, enjoys supporting local artists. “Charley approached me with an idea for Mother’s Day, a ‘moms who rock’ theme,” she recalls. “We put a bill together in a way that allows moms in town to have a whole day, but then they can come out to a show that honors them and watch their peers play something great.” The lineup consists of women who span the musical gamut but are bonded by their common strand of motherhood. Tamaralee Shutt is a freelance graphic artist who also plays trumpet, ukulele, melodica and percussion, plus she’s a singer. In the 1980s she performed in various musical theater groups and even played in a band during her pregnancy with her son, Jess Marley. She has performed with jazz groups Serendipity and the Salt City Jazz Collective, and is a member of the indie rock unit I Am Fool. In addition to Jess, now 26, she also has a 19-year-old daughter, Samantha Spadafore, and two stepchildren, Crista Spadafore, 28, and Joel Spadafore, 30. “My biggest challenge is finding time outside of rehearsals to practice on my own,” Shutt says. “During my daughter’s voice lessons and dance classes, I used to sit in my car with my ukulele and keyboard so I could practice in the parking lot. I wrote a couple songs that way.” Shutt notes the sacrifices that go along with juggling duties. “Being a mom musician is a great outlet,” she says. “Do I wish I were further along with my music career and touring with a band? Yeah, but sometimes you have to put the music on pause. You have to learn to balance home and performance.” For Jenny O’Hara Callaghan and her family, “You always need to make sure their needs are met,” Callaghan says

about her three children, Cassidi, 14, Brogan, 10, and Cavan, 6. “It’s important for me to do something I love and not give everything of myself to my children. I need to share my gifts, talents and strengths. It’s also important for my kids to see that I have outside interests, and that helps them to have hobbies of their own. It’s important that they pursue the things they love, too.” Callaghan has performed with Dark Hollow, the longtime Grateful Dead tribute band, as well as the Shining Star Band, the Smoking Loons and various community choirs. She’s also a teacher at Jowonio School. “They love me playing and singing,” she says. “But you’ve always got to find a balance in life: for me, being a teacher, a mother and singer.” Solo acoustic singer-songwriter Bea has a 6-year-old son, Brixton, who has also taught her the importance of balance and making space in her life for others. “Music was the biggest part of my life for a long time,” she says. “As a new mom, I thought making room in my life for a child meant removing what was taking up all the space. So I didn’t write or sing or even touch my guitar for at least three years after becoming a mom. Then one day an old friend contacted me to play a show in San Francisco. When I did the show, I fell in love with it all over again. With a little rearranging, I realized there was a place for music in my life, even as a mother.” Melissa Gardiner is a full-time musician who teaches and plays with groups including her own Second Line Syracuse and jazz organ trio MG3. She also hosts her own weekly Sunday jazz jam at Funk ’N Waffles Downtown. Her son, Julien, 4, is a regular at the afternoon jam.

5.4.16 - 5.10.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

“He’s come up on stage a couple of times and joined us,” she says. “I am hoping he will join me at this show as well. He loves to dance and doesn’t mind being the center of attention.” Gardiner is a professional trombonist who has shared stages with performers including Aretha Franklin. She relocated from New York City back to Syracuse when she found out she was pregnant. “I moved back to be near my family,” she says. “It is difficult to be a single mom and a musician, and I really don’t think it would be possible without my family’s support. In a way, it has helped me set the bar where I need it to be in order to afford childcare for gigs and such.” She also notes the balancing act of motherhood and music. “I do miss being able to just get up and go out,” she says. “It’s much harder to be spontaneous, to travel; music is mostly a nightlife thing and not family-friendly. This has inspired me to host the jazz jam in the afternoons and encourage all ages to come. I am extremely proud that my son has been so frequently exposed to all sorts of music and culture. I am grateful to be in a place where so many are so encouraging and supportive.” Joanne Troy Perry has raised five children — Mary, 22, Michael, 20, Regina, 18, Anna, 16, and Austin, 13 — while also playing with The Unstoppables and The Combination and working two part-time jobs. “I couldn’t have been performing in the evenings if I didn’t have the support of my husband, Joe,” she says. “I hope it’s been a positive example for our children to see their mom as multidimensional, and as someone who uses her talents for charities whenever possible. They have all shown an interest in performing. Those are positives. The challenges are significant, but not impossible.” SNT

QUICK

By Jessica Novak Snarky Puppy.

Why did you record it at Sonic Ranch Studios? Our keyboardist Bobby Sparks first told me about Sonic Ranch almost a decade ago and I never forgot about it. The studio complex is situated on one of the largest pecan farms in the world, so there’s an eerie serenity to the place. You live there while you’re recording, with three meals per day prepared by incredible Mexican cooks and 24-hour access to the studio itself. So it gives you a sense of comfort, relaxation and focus that can be missing from many recording environments. It’s just a funky place, with crazy artifacts and artwork, beautiful vintage gear, great stuff. I can’t say enough about it.

SNARKY PUPPY TO RAISE LANDMARK WOOF

S

narky Puppy has made a solid reputation as an instrumental jazz fusion/ progressive rock band. Based in Brooklyn, the group formed in 2004 in Denton, Texas, and recently released their first studio album in eight years, Culcha Vulcha. Fresh from an international tour, Snarky Puppy began its North American leg at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on April 28. They perform Thursday, May 5, at the Landmark Theatre, 362 S. Salina St. Local funk/hip-hop outfit Sophistafunk will open the show. The membership shifts for different concert dates. The Syracuse band will include Jason “JT” Thomas on drums, Nate Werth on percussion, Caleb McCampbell and Shaun Martin on keys, Justin Stanton on keys and trumpet, Jay Jennings and Michael “Maz” Maher on trumpets, Chris Bullock on sax and flute, and guitarist Bob Lanzetti. While out on the road, bass player and band leader Michael League chatted about the two-time Grammy-winning band and the new album. When you started the band, what was the goal? It was just a band of friends at the time and it still is to this day. I was writing music that was not exactly jazz, so I picked a group of guys at the school

5.4.16 - 5.10.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

(University of North Texas) whom I thought could play it. One thing led to another and now it’s 12 years later. Touring and recording has always been like kids in a candy store: We love it. Tell me about Culcha Vulcha. It’s a nine-track album we recorded outside of El Paso, Texas, in December after our longest tour of the year. It’s similar to We Like it Here or GroundUP in that it’s an instrumental album of original music, except that we decided to make a real studio album. No cameras, no special guests, no live audience: just us in the studio with the time to really make things sound right instead of the normal pressure of live recording. The record was particularly inspired by the music we’ve encountered during our travels over the last decade. We try to pick up little pieces of the musical cultures we experience and bring them back to the band.

Have you ever made an album this way before? We’ve never actually done this. All of our records have been recorded in two or three days in front of an audience. We wanted to switch up our format: movement equals life. And on the other side of that: complacency equals artistic death. I know our audience is used to the live in-studio video format, but sometimes you have to put the inspiration of the band as the priority over what you think your fans want. And this band is inspired by variety and new challenges. This album captures influences you’ve gathered on your travels around the world. Tell me about what you brought back to the sound. We try our best to experience as much local culture as we possibly can when we’re traveling. We’re definitely not “head back to the hotel after the show” people. As a result, we see a lot of music from around the world and meet a lot of musicians with different perspectives of life and art. Often times, we’ll take middle-of-the-night lessons with local players. You do your best to absorb what is being offered and bring it to your own musical personality in a way that isn’t pretentious or contrived. Culcha Vulcha pulls in Turkish, Argentinian, Indian and Brazilian elements

KEN LUDWIG’S

BASKERVILLE:

A SHERLOCK HOLMES

What’s it like to have played more than 1,200 shows on six continents? Tiring! And energizing as well. We wouldn’t have it any other way. What have you learned from those experiences? Musically, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of consistency. There’s never an excuse for not playing with your whole heart and focus. If you do, there’s no point in making music. I’ve also found that musicians play best when they feel comfortable, happy and free. A player performing the exact part with a closedoff heart can end up being less musical than someone playing the wrong part with the right attitude. On the human side, I’ve learned a lot about loyalty, faith and unconditional

love. When you spend that degree of time together with practically no privacy, the people around you become your family. And with that comes a multitude of other complex things. You have to stick together through it all until you really love the people for all of who they are — not just who they are when they’re at their best. And you need faith to believe that each person will always be trying to improve as both a musician and a human.

among many others, even if obscured in such a way that they are unidentifiable. At the end of the day, it’s just music. If the song means something, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians? Take care of the music first: This is the centerpiece around which your whole business structure is based. Beyond that, we all need help to progress in the music world. People are more likely to put effort into helping a band that they are moved by and will often go to extreme lengths to do so. But they’ll only do it if they believe in you as a person, so integrity and a good attitude are just as essential to career growth. SNT

Julie Taboulie grew up in Utica and Liverpool. She is at work on her first cookbook and a new cooking show, Julie Taboulie’s TAKE Lebanese Kitchen, which will air on Create TV, the PBS lifestyle channel, starting this fall.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked some local chefs and food professionals what kind of influence their mothers (and grandmothers) have had on their cooking and their careers. Following is their reflections. Michael Brown, chef, Sky Armory. “My mother (Sedona Brown) is the epitome of everything good and right in this world. Growing up, I was the youngest of four boys so naturally my relationship with my mother was very strong. I was the baby of the bunch and some could say a ‘mama’s boy.’ Growing up with a fairly large family of boys, we were natural-born eaters. My parents worked hard for what we had, they always made sure we had good healthy food on the table. “In my early years my parents did a lot of gardening. We ate everything that was presented to us on our dinner table because it was homegrown. This taught me as a boy to appreciate and respect food and the hard work that came along with it to upkeep and harvest what was grown at my house. “Coming into this business as a 16-year-old apprentice, I had a natural love for food that stood out to the chefs that I worked for. This love transformed into passion and creativity throughout the years. Now as a 33-year-old executive chef with a son of my own to provide healthy food for, it’s easy to look back and say thank you to my mother and father (deceased) for raising a young chef to appreciate food and to understand that food is not all derived from a frozen package from the grocery store but from hard-working people with love and caring hands for the products they deliver to us on a daily basis. That is what I bring to the kitchen every day and I owe it to my upbringing.” TV celebrity chef Julie Ann Sageer (a.k.a. Julie Taboulie). “I learned my craft from my mom, really sort of at her apron strings, for many years. From her, I really learned the Lebanese way of cooking. I really became like a sponge, observing her hands; there is so much hand work in Lebanese cooking, you need to get your hands right in there. It’s really the best way to sort of know the food, the texture of it and the temperature of it. “I really thank my mom for instilling in me what she learned from her mother, for sharing so much, and for not settling for anything less than fresh, quality ingredients. She is a master at her craft, especially dough and pastries. She taught me to share and to cook from the heart. I give from my heart when I’m cooking food and pay that forward to the audience. I am really glad to have my mother in my life. She is on the road with me now; that support system is a key ingredient to my success.” Thomas “Tom” Armstrong, creator of Tom’s Bootleg BBQ Sauce. Armstrong’s signature barbecue sauce, sold all over Central New York, is his own creation. But he owes his food

“Ijee” simply means “omelet,” and this open-faced, herb-filled Lebanese version is very simple and very satisfying. preferences and cooking style to his mother (deceased), who was raised in Sanford, Fla. “You have a family that you love and you make the food you love and grew up with. For me, that’s pretty much Southern-style comfort food: barbecue, mac and cheese, collard greens, cornbread, all those things.’’ Armstrong is a chef at the Old Erie Restaurant in Weedsport and plans the menu for “Barbecue Wednesdays” (rain or shine) at the restaurant. Barbecue specials will be available Memorial Day weekend and every Wednesday after that. Visit facebook.com/TomsBootlegBBQ or olderieweedsport.com. Aileen Randolph, co-owner of Empire Buffalo and market manager for the Cazenovia Farmers Market. “I was born and raised in the South, but my mama (Evelyn Randolph) is originally from Boston. Thankfully, she was always an adventurous chef, learning to cook not only gumbo and jambalaya but

also empanadas and stir fries. Nowadays, this variety is fairly common, but she was cooking global cuisines back in the late 1970s. Like her, I also like to cook a wide variety of food — and can’t seem to cook in small quantities! “As for the next generation, my 10-year-old daughter isn’t a fan of savory cooking and unlike me she enjoys baking, particularly without a recipe.” One of Aileen’s favorite savory recipes is Asian-Style Bison Meatballs. The recipe can be found at empirebuffalo.com.

Warm pita bread or lettuce and yogurt/yogurt sauce for serving Crack eggs into a large mixing bowl, and poke each yolk with a small knife or fork to loosen. Vigorously whisk the eggs until whites and yolks are completely blended together, then add in the cream or milk and whisk until soft and smooth. Fold in all of the fresh herbs and season with salt and white pepper. Then, whisk in the flour until it dissolves completely. The mixture should be slightly substantial with small bubbles on the surface.

John Tumino, chef and co-founder of In My Father’s Kitchen. “Just watching my mother (Cristina) has influenced me, not only the cooking, but the hospitality and the service to her family and to others. My mom was very much, and is even to this day, a busy bee. She is always on the move, doing something. I think I trade that up: I don’t like to be stagnant. Serving the greater good and helping others is something I picked up from my mother.” The influence of Tumino’s paternal grandmother looms large in his mission to deliver food and services to Syracuse’s homeless and refugee populations. He uses his grandmother’s recipe to make IMFK’s Taste and See Pasta Sauce, which is now carried at Wegmans stores in Central New York. Visit inmyfatherskitchen. org. SNT

Meanwhile, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil over low-medium heat in a small sauté pan (preferably copper) or cast-iron skillet. Once the butter and oil start to foam slightly, ladle about 1/2 cup of the egg mixture into the center of the pan. Lift the pan handle and gently swirl the egg mixture in a circular motion so that it coats the bottom of the pan. Allow the mixture to settle for about 10 seconds, then gently run a silicone spatula around the side walls of the pan, slightly lifting the omelet’s edges so they do not stick.

When the omelet turns light golden brown, after about 3 to 4 minutes, flip over by sliding the spatula under the center and swiftly turning it. Cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes, then remove and place on a baking sheet, and cover with foil. After about 3 more omelets you will need to melt more butter and oil. NEW YORK STATES OF MIND

M

ade in New York 2016, at Auburn’s Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, is both sweeping and focused. It’s a large exhibition displaying works by 65 artists. Most live in Central or Western New York but others come from Albany, Brooklyn and other locales in our state. This annual show, like its predecessors, has points of emphasis; this time, it’s collage and mixed-media works. There’s also interest in differing approaches to narrative. And Made in New York is part of an ongoing celebration of Schweinfurth’s 35th anniversary. The exhibit presents Jeanne Beck’s “The Relics,” with pulled paper fastened by wire to leafed, antique frames. Margery Pearl Gurnett, an artist who often combines glass with other elements, goes all out with “Mesmerized.” It mixes two types of glass, paint, paper, images of a snake, bird, clock and other subjects. Artist Nicora Gangi created “Pathways (pain’s pathway to grace-fillness),” done with paper collage on archival paper. “Mother’s Painful Joy,” by Norma Bliss, is an ambitious mixed-media work consisting of 30 squares united by the figure that appears on each of them. However, each square is decorated individually. In terms of narrative, Pennie Brantley’s oil “Pathway to Knowledge” is both warm and evasive. Here a stairway illuminated by afternoon sunlight coming

through large windows ends before the top, suggesting a personal journey. Gail Hoffman’s “History Lesson #2” demonstrates her capacity for working small and skillfully. In a classroom setting, a Venus de Milo figure instructs a menagerie of tiny animals, including a lion, elephant and giraffe. The chalkboard streams video presenting images of humans interacting with animals in inane ways. Scott Hermann‘s “Street Scene” rejects a figurative approach. The people on this street are faint and fleeting as the artist plays with a digital print, gesso paper, pencil, pen and acrylic. In past works, Kim Waale has explored environmental themes. In the Schweinfurth show, “Displace (Debris)” places a cigarette butt, rubber band, tiny sections of a branch and other items under a glass dome. “All Seeing Eyes,” Jim Ridlon’s assemblage, mixes a poem, a rack, a bunch of tiny scissors, small pieces of brightly colored paper and objects that look like

bulbs. This piece will challenge and puzzle viewers. Made in New York also presents a diverse set of photos, surveying that medium in an indirect way. For example, Dewey Fladd’s “Repent,” with its straight-up view of a truck decorated with religious slogans, contrasts with Marna Bell’s “Luminous Journey 11,” which both depicts a landscape and reflects on landscape imagery. Other interesting images include Bob Gates’ “River of Play,” part of a series looking at playground areas when people aren’t around, and Ryan Terhune’s “Baroda Noir,” with its portrayal of a train station in India. The latter photo concentrates not on the station or people waiting there but on the shadows right next to a train. In “Jummah Service, East London Mosque,” Robert Knight uses a long exposure, creating an illusion of worshipers in motion. As in the past, Made in New York displays few sculptures. Look for Meg Beaudoin’s stoneware trio, “Three Seasons,” and Jack Elliot’s “Carnis,” which consists of scorched and unscorched wood. The exhibition encompasses other noteworthy pieces: Maria Rizzo’s stark, incisive acrylic “Willow Tree”; Eric Shute’s “Equilibrium,” with its emphasis on form, lines and blue and red color; “Too Much and Too Little,” another fine charcoal-on-paper work by James Skvarch. Made in New York 2016, selected by jurors Ann Clarke and John von MemorBergen, presents more than 70 artworks and has room for various media and styles. It’s an annual show that reflects choices made by a new set of jurors. And it’s an exhibition that provides fine exposure for artists from Syracuse, Rochester and throughout New York state. The exhibit runs through May 22 at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn. It’s open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and free for children under age 12. SNT

Pearl

A Celebration of the SU Hoops Legend Text by Skip Murphy Photos by Michael Davis

5.4.16 - 5.10.16 | syracusenewtimes.com

Syracuse University basketball great Dwayne “Pearl” Washington, 52, died April 20 from brain cancer. The 6-foot-2 point guard helped catapult Coach Jim Boeheim’s squad to national prominence during Washington’s career from 1983 to 1986. Although perhaps best-remembered for his “shake and bake” crossover dribble technique that stymied opponents, there were other reasons why Pearl’s legacy is cherished by Orange fans everywhere, including longtime sports journalist Skip Murphy. Mention the name Pearl in Syracuse, and a smile inevitably appears, for Pearl Washington was as much loved as anyone who was ever connected to the gray Salt City. He came in 1983 from the housing projects of Brooklyn and brought with him a streetwise style of basketball that was raw, exciting and hugely creative. Before Pearl, basketball in upstate New York looked more like the movie Hoosiers. Play was slow, methodical, hardly electric. Pearl changed all that. This young man with a boyish face and an Irish-like glint in his eyes lit up the hearts of Orange fans as soon as he arrived. A whirling dervish on the court, Washington found seams that didn’t exist, made passes that had never been tried before, and carried teams on his broad shoulders. And he did it all with his trademark smile. Syracuse, the community, really needed him at that time. This Rust Belt town was reeling, and life was dull. Mario Cuomo was governor and Lee Alexander was still mayor, just prior to his six-year stay in the Big House. The Caroma Restaurant was the place to eat in the daytime, the All-Night Egg Plant during the late evening. Atlas Linen Company was the big band in town. Helen Reddy and the Four Tops headlined at the New York State Fair. The Dinosaur Bar-B-Que was just getting started as a roving concession stand. Something was needed to charge up this town, especially in the winter. In comes Pearl Washington. Pearl was at the center of a sports Perfect Storm. The newly formed Big East Conference was starting to take hold, and sports on cable television was exploding and in dire need of programming. With star teams like Georgetown and St. John’s, star coaches like John Thompson and Rollie Massimino, and star players like Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin and the Pearl, the Big East grabbed center stage. Syracuse’s Carrier Dome became the hallmark arena for college hoops second only to the venerable Madison Square Garden. The excitement changed winters in Syracuse forever. Pearl led this change. He did so as a humble yet seemingly happy kid with a real flair for finding the fun in sports, and he warmly brought the fans along. We are sad to hear of his passing, but thrilled to be able to have shared part of our lives with the Pearl, and happy that he came to share part of his life with us. SNT

Facing page, clockwise from left: The Carrier Dome was Pearl’s oyster, where he performed plenty of dazzling hoops moves; Dajuan Coleman and Michael Gbinije wear tribute T-shirts in honor of Washington before the Jan. 30 Georgia Tech game; and Washington poses for a February 1997 Syracuse New Times cover story. Clockwise from top left, Pearl Washington provides commentary with Dave Ryan for a cable TV broadcast of a 1997 Orange game; the point guard struts his stuff against Boston College during the 1983-1984 season; and Washington announces his decision to leave Syracuse University for an NBA career in May 1986. syracusenewtimes.com | 5.4.16 - 5.10.16

THE HONOR ROLL

At the April 30 dinner and ceremony held at Drumlins, the Syracuse Press Club named former Syracuse New Times publisher Art Zimmer as the 2016 honoree for the club’s Wall of Distinction (which is actually in the lobby of downtown’s Mulroy Civic Center). In his speech, Zimmer didn’t dwell on his own accomplishments, although he impishly suggested that the dinner guests could purchase his recent autobiography, Making It Count: From A to Z, The Life and Times of Art Zimmer, from Log Cabin Books. (A sequel is on its way, too.) Instead, Zimmer noted past and present colleagues who

kept the alternative weekly going through thick and thin: editors-in-chief Mike Greenstein, Tina Schwab Grenis, Molly English, Bill DeLapp and the late Roland Sweet (who was missing, alas, from the evening’s In Memoriam tribute), photography editor Michael Davis, and longtime staffers Lesli Mitchell, Deana Vigliotti, Reid Sullivan, James MacKillop, Walt Shepperd and Jessica Novak. “The staff deserves most of the credit for this award tonight,” Zimmer said, while also noting that his wife, Shirley Sherburne Zimmer, was “the go-to person for everything, the problem solver for every department.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your ability to accomplish magic is at a peak, and will continue to soar for at least two more weeks. And when I use that word “magic,” I’m not referring to the hocus-pocus performed by illusionists like Criss Angel or Harry Houdini. I’m talking about real feats of transformation that will generate practical benefits in your day-to-day life. Now study the following definitions by writer Somerset Maugham, and have faith in your ability to embody them: “Magic is no more than the art of employing consciously invisible means to produce visible effects. Will, love and imagination are magic powers that everyone possesses; and whoever knows how to develop them to their fullest extent is a magician.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20) According to author Vladimir Nabokov, the Russian word toska means “a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness.” Linguist Anna Wierzbicka says it conveys an emotion that blends melancholy, boredom and yearning. Journalist Nick Ashdown suggests that for someone experiencing toska, the thing that’s yearned for may be “intangible and impossible to actually obtain.” How are doing with your own toska, Gemini? Is it conceivable that you could escape it -- maybe even heal it? I think you can. I think you will. Before you do, though, I hope you’ll take time to explore it further. Toska has more to teach you about the previously hidden meaning of your life.

silence, but a limit of hearing,” writes Jane Hirshfield in her poem “Everything Has Two Endings.” This observation is apropos for you right now. There are potentially important messages you’re not registering and catalytic influences you can’t detect. But their apparent absence is due to a blank spot in your awareness, or maybe a willful ignorance left over from the old days. Now here’s the good news: You are primed to expand your listening field. You have an enhanced ability to open certain doors of perception that have been closed. If you capitalize on this opportunity, silence will give way to revelation.

ography is on my pillow,” writes Cancerian poet Buddy Wakefield. “I put it there every morning after making my bed so I’ll remember to read it before falling asleep. I’ve been reading it for six years. I’m on Chapter 2.” What’s the equivalent phenomenon in your world, my fellow Crab? What good deed or righteous activity have you been pursuing with glacial diligence? Is there a healthy change you’ve been thinking about forever, but not making much progress on? The mood and the sway of the coming days will bring you a good chance to expedite the process. In Wakefield’s case, he could get up to Chapter 17.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) In the 16th century,

European explorers searched South America in quest of a mythical city of gold known as El Dorado. Tibetan Buddhist tradition speaks of Shambhala, a magical holy kingdom where only enlightened beings live. In the legends of ancient Greece, Hyperborea was a sunny paradise where the average human life span was a thousand years and happiness was normal. Now is an excellent time for you to fantasize about your own version of utopia, Leo. Why? First, your imagination is primed to expand. Second, dreaming big will be good for your mental and physical health. There’s another reason, too: By envisioning the most beautiful world possible, you will mobilize your idealism and boost your ability to create the best life for yourself in the coming months.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) “Anytime you’re going to grow, you’re going to lose something,” said psychologist James Hillman. “You’re losing what you’re hanging onto to keep safe. You’re losing habits that you’re comfortable with, you’re losing familiarity.” I nominate these thoughts to serve as your words of wisdom in

the coming weeks, Virgo. From an astrological perspective, you are in a phase when luxuriant growth is possible. To harvest the fullness of the lush opportunities, you should be willing to shed outworn stuff that might interfere.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) On Cracked.com,

Auntie Meme tells us that many commonly held ideas about history are wrong. There were no such things as chastity belts in the Middle Ages, for example. Napoleon’s soldiers didn’t shoot off the nose of the Sphinx when they were stationed in Egypt. In regards to starving peasants, Marie Antoinette never derisively said, “Let them eat cake.” And no Christians ever became meals for lions in ancient Rome’s Colosseum. (More: tinyurl.com/historicaljive.) In the spirit of Auntie Meme’s exposé, and in alignment with the astrological omens, I invite you to uncover and correct at least three fabrications, fables and lies about your own past.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Poet Charles Wright marvels at the hummingbird, “who has to eat 60 times his own weight a day just to stay alive. Now that’s a life on the edge.” In the coming weeks, Scorpio, your modus operandi may have resemblances to the hummingbird’s approach. I don’t mean to suggest that you will be in a manic survival mode. Rather, I expect you’ll feel called to nourish your soul with more intensity than usual. You’ll need to continuously fill yourself up with experiences that inspire, teach and transform you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “Anybody can become angry,” said Greek philosopher Aristotle. “That is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way, that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.” I’m pleased to inform you, Sagittarius, that now is a time when you have an exceptional capacity for meeting Aristotle’s high standards. In fact, I encourage you to honor and learn all you can from your finely honed and well-expressed anger. Make it work wonders for you. Use it so constructively that no one can complain. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) To celebrate your arrival at the height of your sex appeal, I’m resurrecting the old-fashioned word “vavoom.” Feel free to use it as your nickname. Pepper it into your conversations in place of terms like “awesome,” “wow,” or “yikes.” Use a felt-tip marker to make a temporary VAVOOM tattoo on your beautiful body. Here are other enchanted words you should take charge of and make an intimate part of your daily presentation: verve, vim, vivid, vitality, vigor, voracious, vivacious, visceral, valor, victory, and VIVA! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) When he was a boy, Mayan poet Humberto Ak’ab’al asked his mother, “What are those things that shine in the sky?” “Bees,” she answered mischievously. “Every night since then,” Humberto writes, “my eyes eat honey.” In response to this lyrical play, the logical part of our brains might rise up and say, “What a load of nonsense!” But I will ask you to set aside the logical part of your brain for now, Aquarius. According to my understanding of the astrological omens, the coming days will be a time when you need a big dose of sweet fantasies, dreamy stories and maybe even beautiful nonsense. What are your equivalents of seeing bees making honey in the night sky’s pinpoints of light? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “Sometimes, a seemingly insignificant detail reveals a whole world,” says artist Pierre Cordier. “Like the messages hidden by spies in the dot of an i.” These are precisely the minutiae that you should be extra alert for in the coming days, Pisces. Major revelations may emerge from what at first seems trivial. Generous insights could ignite in response to small acts of beauty and subtle shifts of tone. Do you want glimpses of the big picture and the long-range future? Then be reverent toward the fine points and modest specifics.
