Bridal Shows Across Connecticut This Year Finding vendors for all facets of a wedding can be exhausting and time-consuming. It can also be fun. Statistics show that most couples become engaged between December and February — Christmas and Valentine’s Day — which is why so many bridal shows and extravaganzas are scheduled for the first few months of the year: vendors want to take advantage of the excitement of a new engagement. A few shows have already taken place in January, including The Connecticut Bridal Show Expo, billed as the largest bridal show on the East Coast. Plenty of shows still remain, however, for those ready to start planning their big day. The following have also been announced for 2016 in Connecticut: *The 19th Annual Saint Clements Castle & Marina Bridal Show, 1931 Portland-Cobalt Road in Portland; Sunday, February 7, 11 am to 3 pm; admission $10; professional vendors, photographers, videographers, women’s and men’s bridal fashions, limousine service, and entertainers; grand prize Clements Castle wedding reception giveaway; 860-342-0593, saintclementscastle.com. *Mill on the River 2016 Bridal Expo, Mill on The River Restaurant, 989 Ellington Road in South Windsor; Saturday, February 20, 11 am to 3 pm; admission $10 (promotion through The Knot: fee waived for bride and groom when Knot ad is mentioned); sample hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and housemade wedding cakes, meet professional wedding vendors, reservations requested; 860-289-7929. *Wedding Steps Bridal Show Extravaganza-Trumbull, Trumbull Marriott 180 Hawley Lane; Sunday, February 21, 1 to 4 pm; admission $8; first 50 brides at show will have chance to win $25,000 for their wedding; also vendors for photography, videography, transportation, bridal fashions, invitations, jewelry and more; door prizes and grand prize honeymoon Caribbean cruise; 203-746-1648, info@weddingsteps.com, weddingsteps.com. *Women’s Health & Bridal Expo at Mohegan Sun, Mohegan Sun Casino (Grand Uncas Ballroom, use Riverview Garage for parking), 1 Mohegan Sun Boulevard

Veils Are A Continuing Tradition For Brides By Nancy K. Crevier
The tradition of the bridal veil goes back many centuries, to the times when the Romans painted a bride’s veils with fire symbols, to scare off the evil spirits. It has also served as a religious symbol of humility and respect for God, to show honor to a space, and as a symbol of virginity. In Christian theology, the veil served as a reminder that the bride was dying from her previous life, and entering into her new life, with her husband. In arranged marriages of yore, the face of the bride was kept veiled, in order that her husband might not see her face — just in case it was displeasing to him. The husband’s lifting the veil up was considered symbolic of consummation of the marriage, and that she was now his possession. It is still customary in the 21st century for brides to wear a veil, but for very different reasons. While the veil once indicated modesty and purity, the modern bride considers the veil as an accessory that adds a special touch. Melanie Mattegat, owner of Julie Allen Bridals in Newtown, estimated that 80 percent of brides today wear some kind of a veil, “or something, in her hair,” she said. Less common, said daughter Lauren More-
house, her assistant, is the “blusher,” or veil over the face. “It’s not too common; maybe 10 to 15 percent of the brides choose a blusher, and it’s more common at religious ceremonies,” said Ms Morehouse. The bride who does opt for a blusher most likely will lift the veil herself, a sign of today’s women’s independence. A veil can be attached forward on the crown, fixed far to the back, or placed anywhere from crown to nape that the bride desires, using any number of attractive accessories. Julie Allen Bridals offers “loaner” veils for brides to take to the pre-wedding hair trials. Bobby pins and hairspray used during the experimentation of hair styles for the wedding day can cause damage to a veil. “A veil at the hair trial is really only needed for judging placement,” explained Ms Morehouse, and loaners ensure that the actual veil, which can range from $80 to more than $500, is in perfect shape on the big day. Nearly all veils are made of tulle, Ms Morehouse said, a thin, soft netting, but those veils come in many styles. The tiny, sheer “birdcage” veil falls forward, just below the eyes. A “fly away” veil barely brushes the shoulder, and the fingertip veil extends to below the hip. Ballet veils will fall below the knee, but not to the floor, as does a “Chapel” veil. The Cathedral veil sweeps down to the
A tiny birdcage veil is the perfect addition to a tailored gown, say experts at Julie Allen Bridals.
The floor-sweeping Cathedral veil is a traditional and still popular choice for brides this year. Many brides detach this trailing veil for the reception, says Julie Allen Bridals Owner Melanie Mattegat.

floor and trails behind the bride, anywhere from 96 to 120 inches in length, Ms Mattegat said. “For us, at Julie Allen,” said Ms Morehouse, “veils generally start at elbow length, although the birdcage veil is available.” But the most popular veil these days, said these two bridal experts, is the Cathedral veil. “The brides love the look of the Cathedral veil as they go down the aisle. Many of them, though, then take off the long veil at the reception,” said Ms Mattegat. An alternate hair ornament often replaces the veil, for that event. Brides who visit Julie Allen are currently drawn to the simple veil with a beaded edge, or the lace-edge Mantilla style, Ms Mattegat has observed. The veil is often dictated by the dress, she added. A fit and flare style of dress, or the trumpet dress, calls for the simplicity of the birdcage veil, for example, while a ball gown or A-line dress is complemented by a more traditional style of veil. The veil, Ms Morehouse pointed out, can change the whole look of the dress. With so many veil options, a bride can truly feel special in her bridal gown. There are occasions when a bride insists that she does not want a veil. But years of experience have shown Ms Mattegat that “There’s always that little bit of tradition that kicks in, at the end. We even suggest she get just a simple veil. Sometimes, the bride finds that she does want one, for the traditional photographs,” she said.

Options Available For Gowns After
Wedding dresses do not have to be worn only once. Generations of women have carefully cleaned and then stored their wedding gowns with the hope that their daughters will someday wear them. Others hang on to them, not knowing what they will eventually do with what may be the single most expensive piece of clothing a woman will purchase in her lifetime. Still others decide to give their dress to Goodwill or other thrift shops, allowing someone else to have a beautiful dress for their big day. They may be one of the most emotional purchases of your life, but donating your gown after your big day can help someone else have their dream wedding. For those who want to donate their gown, many groups and organizations exist that will not only reuse a wedding gown, but will also give a second life with a purpose. Adorned In Grace provides bridal and formal wear to benefit victims of human trafficking. The AIG Bridal and Formalwear Shop, located in Portland, Ore., sells new and gently used wedding gowns, formals, petticoats, veils, and accessories. All
proceeds are used to promote awareness and prevention of sex trafficking as well as restoration for trafficking victims. A community effort, the store is staffed and managed by volunteers, and has received monetary and in-kind support from many local individuals, businesses, and generous brides who donate their gowns. Since June 2011, The Fred Meyer Corporation has provided a 2,800-square-foot retail space rent-free and all of the items sold have been donated. The proceeds from every sale are be used to combat the problem of sex trafficking in Portland. Gowns must be of circa 2005 or newer; formals, petticoats, bras, veils, hair accessories, jewelry, children’s special occasion and other wedding supplies and décor are also accepted. AIG accepts mailed donations, and asks that gowns are bagged to avoid water damage. US Mail and UPS are the preferred forms of shipping. Donors who include a self-addressed stamped envelope, or even a piece of paper with their email address, will receive a receipt for their taxes in return. Send e-mail to info@adornedingrace. com or visit adorned-in-grace.squarespace. com for additional information. The Arthritis Foundation Thrift Shop will sell donated bridal gowns to raise money for the foundation’s ongoing re-
search efforts to “find a cure for arthritis, advocate for better access to care, and connect families to the treatment and support they need,” according to the shop’s website (arthritis.org/new-york/about-us/arthritis-foundation-thrift-shop). Located in the upper east side of Manhattan at 1430 Third Avenue, the shop accepts donations weekdays between 10 am and 5 pm; an employee working on January 11 said they prefer to receive donations
after 10 — and not as early as 9, as stated online — because they don’t always have employees to cover both the sales floor and help those who bring in donations. Later in the day is better, she said. Gowns should be clean and in good condition so that AF Thrift Shop employees can immediately put them on a mannequin, and sell them. Gowns can be dropped off at the Big Apple location, or at Arthritis Foundation New England Region office in Rocky Hill; call 860-563-1177 for additional information. Gowns can also be shipped to the store, but shipping must be covered by the donor. The store cannot accept COD items. Deployments, financial hardships, and other challenges unique to servicemen and women can make it difficult to plan a wedding. Established in 2007, Brides Across America gives military brides a nearly free gown during the biannual Brides Across America Nationwide Gown Giveaway. Military brides are asked to make a $20 donation to Brides Across America per event. While BAA is headquartered in Andover, Mass., events are held twice a year in partnership with bridal salons across the country. The program has reportedly given away more than 14,000 gowns since its inception. Brides Across America tries to give away gowns that are currently in fashion. For that reason they only accept gowns that are no more than five years old. All sizes are accepted. Those interested in donating their gown should visit bridesacrossamerica.com/ give-a-dress and fill in the form on that page, which asks for designer, size, style number, year purchased, price, alterations if any, and additional items being gifted. There is also space for supplementary information. Former brides with unique and/or vintage gowns are encouraged to contact Brides Across America, however. Some such dresses are accepted, following email and photo submissions. BAA accepts veils, tiaras and accessories, but no undergarments or petticoats. Once a gown is accepted, BAA will send information on how to ship it. Tax receipts are also provided upon request. For additional information call 877-6503309, send e-mail to info@bridesacrossamerica.com, or visit bridesacrossamerica. com. The Bridal Garden is, according to its website, the only not-for-profit bridal boutique in New York City. Donated designer gowns are discounted up to 75 percent off their original retail prices, and
then proceeds benefit education for disadvantaged children. Prices start at $795 and can increase to several thousand dollars. Accepted gowns will range from size 0 through 18, will have been purchased within the past five years, and will be in “fairly clean, sellable condition.” Donations are tax deductible. Donations of veils, headpieces, sashes, boleros, shawls, and jewelry that can be worn on a wedding day are also accepted. Call 212-252-0661 or visit bridalgarden. org for additional information. St Mary’s Catholic Church in Barnesville, Md., has a twin parish, St Joseph’s
Parish, in Carcasse, Haiti. Among the North American church’s ongoing missions is Brides For Haiti, which collects gowns to give to brides in its twin parish. BFH also sells gowns to raise money to fund its outreach in Haiti. Vintage wedding gowns are not accepted, nor are gowns older than seven years old. The program accepts wedding gowns, as well as prom and Quinceañera gowns. Donors are asked to clean gowns before donating them. The church provides tax receipts for those who send an SASE with their gown donation. Contact Brides For Haiti Donations Director Patti Bohr at pabohr164@ yahoo.com for details. Success In Style has a mission of assisting women and men in crisis become employed and self-sufficient. The nonprofit provides free business attire, practical fashion advice, and interview counseling. Its sister organization, Cherie Amour, sells donated wedding dresses to help fund Success In Style. This is one of the few organizations found that accepts not only contemporary gowns but also antique and outdated styles. “Puffy sleeves, awkward waistlines, difficult fitting? No problem! Our skilled designer volunteers and interns can transform and renew old dresses to make them ready for the sales floor,” Cheri Amour’s website promises. “Give an antique gown another chance to be appreciated down the aisle,” it also suggests. Cherie Amour also accepts and resells related wedding attire including tuxedos and bridesmaid dresses. Donations are tax deductible, and donors can receive a $20 gift certificate to Charity’s Closet, one of Success In Style’s thrift shops. For details including donation guidelines, call 301-498-5035, send e-mail to donations@successinstyle.org, or visit successinstyle.org. Fairytale Brides on A Shoestring, out of Rockville, Md., sells wedding gowns for up to 75 percent off their retail price.
The nonprofit boutique (501c3) is operated by volunteers; there are no paid staff members. All net proceeds are then donated to charities helping women. Fairytale Brides has contributed to Victims’ Rights Foundation and Rockville Pregnancy Clinic. It has also donated to Brides Across America. Donations, which are tax deductible, should be five years old or less. Fairytale Brides also accepts mother of the bride, prom dresses, bridal accessories, veils, jewelry, and flower girl dresses. Donations are received from former brides, as well as salons and designers. Dresses should be cleaned, but if that isn’t possible the salon asks that donors cover the cost of a cleaning. Dresses can be delivered to the salon or shipped; visit fairytalebrides.org/dress-donation for details. NICU Helping Hands was created in
the summer of 2010 because of an “overwhelming need in Fort Worth, Texas,” according to the group’s website, for a local organization that could support parents of babies wh ve care unit, or NICU. One of NICU Helping Hands’s programs is The Angel Gown® Program, which takes donated wedding gowns and pale colored bridesmaid dresses and turns them into handmade gowns for final pho-
tos and/or burial services for babies who are stillborn or die shortly after birth. Wedding gowns are distributed to any one of more than 700 volunteer seamstresses through the United States, who convert the gowns into garments that a family can use to wrap their baby in for their final journey. At this time, however, the program is not accepting any more wedding gowns. The program has been overwhelmed with gown donations, and is doing fundraising to cover the cost of shipping Angel Gowns across the country. Those who are considering a gown donation are being asked to hold on to their gown, and watch the program’s website, NICOhelpinghands.org, for updates. St Anthony’s Bridal helps lower and moderate income brides in the Washington, D.C., area purchase a gently used gown for $150, regardless of their value — and St Anthony’s has been gifted everything from Christos NYC and Jim Hjelm to Vera Wang and Hailey Page. The 501(c)(3) organization also offers educational workshops to help couples learn how to have a beautiful wedding on a budget. Workshops also teach wedding crafts for those looking for more DIY activities. Currently located in Bethesda, Md., St Anthony’s Bridal began a closeout sale in December to liquidate all 700 gowns in its inventory… so that the project could relocate from its original location within a dog daycare and boarding service business into a space of its own, with an entrance of its own (until now, St Anthony’s Bridal clients had to access the bridal project by going through the dog daycare business). The new location, in a commercial space in northern Virginia, will also provide space for workshops to be held more frequently; a meeting location for brides-tobe and past brides to exchange reception ideas and items; and church programs for the community “to encourage marriage in a culture that typically delays marriage,” according to the program’s website. The new location will also allow St Anthony’s Bridal to increase its hours from two hours each Saturday to 15 hours per week. St Anthony’s accepts wedding gowns, veils, belts, and other bride accessories, including reception items. It does not accept crinolines, bridesmaid gowns or prom gowns. For additional information visit stanthonysbridal.com. Founded in 2010 in Santa Clara, Calif., Wish Upon a Wedding is a nonprofit organization that provides weddings and vow renewals for couples facing terminal illness and serious life altering circumstances, regardless of sexual orientation. The Knot Unveils Top Trends In Weddings For 2016 The Knot, a leading wedding resource, has announced its annual Wedding Trends Report of the top trends for 2016. Two-in-One Dresses & Fashion-Forward Florals: Instead of a complete dress change from the ceremony to reception, brides are opting for dresses that combine a formal ceremony gown and a fun reception frock. Wedding Concierge Pros: If an extra hand is needed to execute any element of the day that falls out of the realm of traditional planner duties, there’s a professional (and many times, an app) for that. Popular services include proposal assistance, bridesmaids for hire, and bachelor party planning gurus. Satellite Bars: In addition to the standard mixed drinks, beer and wine setup, this second bar is designated for a special spirit. Contemporary Choirs & Late-Night Karaoke: Special musical performances aren’t new, but this year’s trend is: think 20-person ensembles. For those hosting an after-party, karaoke is king. Sweet Endings: Cakes are getting an update with graphic prints and textile-like motifs, while plain tiers are acting as canvas for video displays. Wow-Worthy Websites: Weddings have become weekend-long celebrations, making wedding websites a must-have for all the details guests need. Couples are hiring design gurus to create a completely custom site with a unique URL, bespoke details and personalized illustrations. Total Personalization: From serving the couple’s favorite dish from a local restaurant or having an ordained family member officiate the ceremony, elements will reflect their favorite tastes and interests, making their wedding day uniquely their own. 3-D Printing: Couples are creating memorable 3-D save-the-dates that set the vibe for a modern celebration, and even making a 3-D printed cake topper that looks just like the bride and groom. Some are even printing bridesmaid jewelry and groomsmen cufflinks to gift a one-of-a-kind wedding day look. Food-Inspired Floral Elements: Bouquets and centerpieces are getting a style boost thanks to untraditional floral elements, like fruit and vegetables. Couples are even including ingredients off the dinner menu in their centerpieces, like kale or artichokes. Stylish Grooms: Grooms are switching to a dinner jacket for the reception or making a simple wardrobe change to a different bow tie and pocket square. Locally Sourced Food: The wedding menu will mimic the offerings at your local farm-to-table restaurant. Metallic Palettes: Add a metallic to the color palette for a hint of glitz or make a statement with rose gold sequin bridesmaid dresses, or a sparkle-dusted cake.

Trending: From Prints For Bridesmaids To By Eliza Hallabeck
Some of Newtown’s fashion experts recently offered examples of trends for wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses, rehearsal dinner dresses, and mother of the bride and groom dresses. Sequins and lace, bridal consultant and co-manager at Julie Allen Bridals Lauren Morehouse said, are two trends for wedding dresses this year. A-line and ballgown silhouettes, sweetheart necklines, and beaded belts were just some of the notable trends among dresses that Ms Morehouse said represent the trends of this year when asked to share examples. Lace of many variations — shiny, crochet, beaded, and floral — were noted as trends
for bridal gowns by Ms Morehouse, who also chose dresses with detailed bead work and embroidery, like an Allure Couture wedding gown, as an example of this year’s wedding dress trends. Lace was also a trend for rehearsal dresses, bridal shower dresses, and mother of the bride or groom dresses, Ms Morehouse noted while finding examples among the offerings at Julie Allen Bridals. For bridesmaids dresses, Ms Morehouse said print dresses have been a hit, with large or small floral patterns, like an Allure Bridals gown that has a sweetheart neckline and rouched bodice. Floral patterns, Ms Morehouse said, also make dresses appropriate for a number of
occasions, from bridesmaids to bridal shower dresses to wearing the dress as a guest to a wedding. Ms Morehouse referred to one dress, a floorlength gown by Bari Jay, as “the Pinterest dress,” because she said it perfectly portrays so many postings by Pinterest users online. Ms Morehouse noted the dress’s rose gold color, all-over sequins, and flattering cut make it ideal for brides, bridesmaids, and soon-to-be brides attending rehearsal events. For flower girls’ dresses, Ms Morehouse noted bridesmaids dresses that come in smaller versions for the younger girls, dresses that match the bridesmaids dresses in color but are different styles, and one Rosebud dress with a

Ms Caufield noted dresses with illusion details, high necklines, cut-out styles, and/or embroidery as trends this year. “They keep getting more and more elegant,” said Ms Caufield. This year was the first time Ms Caufield said she noted two-piece dresses, with the top and
bottom separate. Bridesmaids, Ms Caufield said, tend to wear more classic styles, but she said they have been a bit more “out of the box” recently, like evening gowns. She also said brides have been choosing to tailor the bridesmaids dresses for each bridesmaid by picking different dresses in the same color. Sleeves, Ms Caufield said, have been a hit, especially with mothers of the bride or groom. Ms Caufield also noted floral print dresses, like a Sherri Hill short length dress with ( continued on page 10 )

a plunging illusion neckline, and sequins as trends. Another bridal trend Ms Caufield said she has taken notice of this year is buying a second dress to switch into after the wedding ceremony. She said wearing a big dress for the ceremony and a different dress more suited for dancing has been a popular idea with a number of brides. Some recent brides, Ms Caufield said, have chosen to stray from the traditional white gown and opt for lavender, champagne, or blush colors dresses. Buying dresses around a theme, like where the wedding will take place, especially if it is a destination wedding, has also been a trend, according to Ms Caufield. Labels + Tags’ PJ Yochum and store owner Christine Ruzek chose a number of items to display at their store when asked to offer examples of wedding trends this year. Choosing dresses based on where the wedding is being held, Ms Yochum said, can lead to some cute outfits. A short white dress with lace details, she said, would perfectly match with cowboy boots for a dress rehearsal or wedding held at a barn or local family venue. Examples Ms Ruzek chose as of this year’s trends ranged from classic cuts for rehearsal events or bridal showers, to short edgier options with cutouts or floral details for bridal showers or bachelorette parties. A black jumpsuit paired with a belt, Ms Yochum pointed out, would also be a great choice for almost any wedding, as the bride-to-be or guest. Ms Yochum advised picking “something classy but fun” for most wedding events, and Labels + Tags’ PJ Yochum said these outfits, three dresses and a black jumpsuit, could be worn to any wedding occasions, such as rehearsal dinners or bachelorette parties. —Bee Photo, Hallabeck

T This Allure Couture dress, Julie Allen Bridals’ Lauren Morehouse said, features beaded tiers and embroidery. —Bee Photo, Hallabeck added that many outfits could be used during the honeymoon or when traveling, like a short blue dress with cutouts on display at the store on January 8. Pink has been a big color this year, Ms Yochum said, adding that she recommends women look into trends and then search for outfits for each of the special occasions. Shopping at stores like Labels + Tags— a resale store with fashion apparel, shoes, jewelry, and accessories — offers the buyer unique finds and beautiful items, without spending a fortune, Ms Yochum said. From long dresses to casual short dresses, Ms Yochum said the store has many pieces for wedding occasions. “We have dresses for whatever venue you are getting married at,” said Ms Yochum. Julie Allen Bridals’ Lauren Morehouse said this Jasmine Bridal dress, featuring a wine colored lace and a sweetheart neckline with a high neck lace overlay and low back, also with lace overlay, would be on trend for bridesmaids, as a rehearsal dinner dress, or for wearing to any wedding occasion. —Bee Photo, Hallabeck ed there are dresses that would be ideal for mothers of the brides or grooms that include the shoes and associated jackets. Some dresses, she said, still have tags on them and were never worn. Pockets hidden in the folds of skirts or dresses were also notable at each of the locations. At Labels + Tags one short white dress with asymmetrical top featured pockets with bow details. One bride-to-be at Julie Allen Bridals was overheard as she walked out with her hands slipped inside a dress’s smooth and flowing skirt, “It has pockets.” For her, it was a reason to smile.

Share Your Good News! The Newtown Bee publishes engagement and wedding announcements free of charge. Whether you and/or your groom are current or former residents of Newtown, we’d love to share your good news. We have engagement and weddings announcement forms available to make it easy for you. The forms are available in the front office of The Bee Publishing Company, online at NewtownBee.com (click on Services, and then scroll down to Announcement Forms), or you can contact us to have one mailed to you. Engagements should be announced once a wedding date has been established. Wedding announcements must be received no later than six months after the date of the wedding in order to be published. Engagement Publicity Forms include spaces for your full names, hometown, education history, profession and current employer, and parents’ names and hometowns for the bride- and groom-to-be. There is also a spot to let us know who is making the announcements. Weddings used to always be announced by the parents of the bride to be, but these days an engagement can be announced by the bride, the groom, the engaged couple, the parents of the bride, or the parents of the groom. The Wedding Announcement Form allows newlyweds to share the full name of the bride and groom, the wedding date, location (church, synagogue, etc) and town in which the ceremony took place, the officiating clergy, and where the reception was held. It also includes sections for the education history of the bride and groom, their occupations and employers, the location of the honeymoon, and postwedding hometown. Information can also include the bride’s parents’ names and hometown, and the groom’s parents’ names and hometown; who gave the bride away; a description of the bride’s dress; the name and hometown of the maid or matron of honor, and a description of her dress; the names and homes of bridesmaids and flower girls, and
their dress descriptions; and the names and hometowns of the best man, ushers, ring bearers, and other attendants. You can provide only the basics or all the details. Tell us as much as you want, or share only the basic details. Couples are also welcome to use these forms as guidelines to write and then submit their own announcement. We can also use black and white photos, color photos,
slides, negatives, and electric files to run with your announcements. Photos sent with an SASE will be returned; all others are held in the office and can be picked up for up to one year. A confirmation phone number is also required, but never published with the announcements. Call Associate Editor Shannon Hicks for additional information at 203-4263141 or send e-mail to shannon@thebee.com. Announcements can be mailed to Miss Hicks c/o The Newtown Bee, 5 Church Hill Road, Newtown CT 06470, or e-mailed to her at the same address above.
