Selecting And Caring For The Perfect Christmas Tree To some, Christmas just is not Christmas without a real Christmas tree. The following are a few hints, provided by The Connecticut Christmas Tree Growers Association, to help you select and then care for that perfect tree from a Connecticut Christmas tree farm. *Decide on where you will place the tree. Will it be seen from all sides or will some of it be up against a wall? Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators, and air ducts. Place the tree clear of doors. *Measure the height and width of the space you have available in the room where the tree will be placed. There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it is too tall. Take a tape measure with you to measure your chosen tree and bring a cord to tie your tree to the car. *Remember that trees sold on retail lots in urban areas may have come from out of state and may have been exposed to drying winds in transit. They may have been cut weeks earlier. Buy trees early before the best trees have been sold and where trees are shaded. Ask the retailer whether their trees are delivered once at the beginning of the season or are they delivered at different times during the selling season. *Choose a fresh tree. A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree. It is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop off. *Remember to choose a tree that fits
where it is to be displayed. For example, if the tree is displayed in front of a large window, then all four sides should look as good as possible. If the tree is displayed against a wall, then a tree with three good sides would be okay. A tree with two good sides would work well in a corner. The more perfect a tree, the more expensive it is. *Make sure the handle or base of the tree is straight and 6–8 inches long so it will fit easily into the stand. *Do a little research on different Christmas tree types. Some Christmas tree varieties will hold needles longer than others. The following are a few tips on how to keep your tree fresh throughout the holiday season: *If you are not putting the tree up right away, store it in an unheated garage or some other area out of the wind and
cold (freezing) temperatures. Make a fresh one-inch cut on the butt end and place the tree in a bucket of warm water. *When you decide to bring the tree indoors, make another fresh one-inch cut and place the tree in a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of water, or a general rule is one quart of water for every inch of diameter of the trunk. *Be sure to keep the water level about the base of the tree. If the base dries out, resin will form over the cut end and the tree will not be able to absorb water and will dry out quickly. Commercially prepared mixes, aspirin, sugar, and other additives added to the water are not necessary. Research has shown that plain water will keep a tree fresh. *Check all Christmas tree lights for worn electrical cords. Use UL- approved electrical decorations and cords. Unplug tree lights at night.
*Miniature lights produce less heat and reduce the drying effect on the tree. *It’s a nuisance to water a Christmas tree once it is decorated with a tree skirt and surrounded by presents. Here is an easy solution, supplied by Gene and Marian Anderson of Guse Hardware (and The Minneapolis Star Tribune) in Minneapolis: Buy a funnel and a 3- to 4-foot length of vinyl tubing to slip over the funnel outlet. Fasten the funnel/tube with a twist-tie or twine in an out-of-the-way but reachable part of the tree. Extend the tubing down the tree trunk and into the tree stand reservoir. Now you can water the tree through the funnel without bending over or disturbing the tree skirt or its ornaments. *Take down the tree before it dries out. Many fresh-cut trees if properly cared for will last at least five weeks before drying out. *Recycle your tree after Christmas. Many communities will pick up trees and turn them into chips. Or put the tree in your back yard and place bread and suet among the branches for the birds. Connecticut Christmas Tree Growers Association was organized in 1960 to encourage the development of the Christmas tree industry in the state of Connecticut. Its website, CTChristmasTree.org, is maintained for CCTGA members and for the public who buy real trees at Christmas. The site includes information about local tree farms, where to purchase trees, and how to care for them. The site also provides a list of officers, members, and membership information.
‘Holiday In Bloom’ At Osborne Homestead Museum DERBY — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announces that for the 2012 winter holiday season each room of Osborne Homestead Museum will showcase a seasonal plant connected to holiday folklore and tradition. As they have done for more than 20 years, volunteers create the beautiful holiday decorations. Volunteers representing Ansonia Garden Club, Olde Ripton Garden Club, The Garden Club of Orange, Naugatuck Garden Club, Roxbury/Bridgewater Garden Club, Derby Garden Society, Pomperaug Valley Garden Club, Oxford Garden Club, and Ye Olde Kellogg Garden Society are again creating decorations for this year’s presentation, “Holiday In Bloom.” Visitors can enjoy the holidays from a new perspective. Featured plants will include poinsettia, pine, Christmas rose, laurel, rosemary/herbs, holly, ivy, mistletoe, and pomegranate. The museum was the home of conservationist, business woman, and philanthropist Frances Osborne Kellogg (1876-1956), who lived in the house her entire life. The exhibit will be on view from November 23 through December 16, with visiting hours and guided tours available Thursday through Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm. On Friday evenings, November 30, December 7, and December 14, the museum will present “twilight tours,” highlighting the special glow of the decorations by candlelight from 4 to 6:30 pm. Group tours are also available; reservations are requested. The museum is at 500 Hawthorne Avenue, off Route 34; telephone 203-734-2513.

This holiday season, smart shoppers are considering not only the cost of their purchases, but hidden expenses that can arise later, such as unexpected repairs, replacement costs, accessories and more. With a little advance planning and by following these shopping tips, you can stay on budget well into the new year: *Shop around. Just because one retailer has it “on sale” does not mean it is cheaper than another’s “regular” price. And if something is on sale in a store across town, calculate your time and cost to travel there. Call ahead to make sure the item is in stock, not in “limited quantities only” or “not available in all stores.” *Save those receipts. Check the retailer’s return policy. Note if there are time limits or restocking fees. Always save receipts and get gift receipts to include with presents. *Protection packages are savings plans. Extended service contracts and cellphone insurance can be a key part of a holiday “savings” plan, to save on future unexpected costs that could hurt your overall budget. Beyond simply extending the original warranty, good service contracts offer free troubleshooting and protect against accidental damage and normal wear and tear. For cellphones and mobile devices, choose insurance protecting against loss, theft and damage, especially if you have kids or travel frequently. “Especially in these times, investing a few dollars now in service contracts for major purchases like expensive toys,
consumer electronics, appliances and sporting goods is essential to avoid unexpected costs for replacing items that are accidentally broken or need costly repairs,” said Jamie Breneman, a spokesperson for NEW Customer Service Companies, Inc, an independent administrator of buyer protection services. “Shoppers increasingly are finding these plans are a great way to gain peace of mind and enjoy products longer.” *Stock up on accessories. Make sure you have purchased all needed accessories, like batteries, memory cards, connectors and wires. Check the box or with the store to learn what is needed for your gift. This way you will not lose precious time or money returning to the store. *Bulk up. Buy in bulk when possible. If you are a parent loaded with toys that drain batteries fast, save by buying them in bulk. Or, if you have several electronics buffs on your birthday or Valentine’s gift lists, stock up now and take advantage of any sales. *Avoid costly DIY projects. Don’t ruin your holiday with a hole in the living room wall. Avoid do-it-yourself installation errors resulting in costly home repairs or product damage. Check if delivery and installation is available, especially on large electronics or heavy items. Make sure such services are timely, so not to get stuck without your latest holiday purchase up and running. By following these tips, smart shoppers can not only find perfect gifts, but will save on time and money — and make sure holiday purchases are protected and enjoyed for years to come.

Christmas Tree Committee Seeking Bright Idea BY NANCY K. CREVIER Diana Johnson and Janet Woycik of the Ram Pasture Christmas Tree Lighting Committee are looking for a bright idea. “We need a good suggestion on how to best light our luminarias that surround Hawley Pond and line Elm Drive,” said Ms Johnson. Every year the committee places hundreds of sand-filled, cardboard luminarias to light the way to the Christmas tree in Ram Pasture when darkness falls on the eve of the tree lighting, which this year takes place at 7 pm, Friday, November 30. The luminarias are usually lit by wax candles. (Other festivities begin at 6:30 pm that evening, as they do every year.) “The candles are beautiful, but we are concerned about safety, and in past years have been asked to find a better way to light them,” Ms Johnson said. Two years ago, the committee tried battery operated candles — “We even tried putting two in a bag,” said Ms Johnson — but they cast only a wan light. “We are hoping that someone can tell us a better way to light the luminarias, without using candles,” she said. The cost for the alternative must be in the same ballpark as the current wax candles, she added. “We spend about 59 cents for each candle,” Ms Johnson said. Ms Johnson and Ms Woycik urge any-
Members of the Ram Pasture Christmas Tree Lighting Committee are hoping the public will help them with a new idea to light the luminarias that surround Hawley Pond and adjacent roads the evening of the town’s tree lighting. The Ram Pasture event will be the first of three consecutive nights of tree lightings in town this year, running November 30-December 2. —Bee file photo one with a brilliant plan to contact them at dianajohnson5418@yahoo.com, as soon as possible. Please include the best way for them to get in touch, should the idea be one that lights them up. The tree lighting event traditionally opens with caroling and live music led by student groups from Newtown High School, and visits from Santa and Mrs
Claus. Hot chocolate and donuts are served following the lighting of the tree. Two More Tree Lightings In addition to the Ram Pasture tree lighting ceremony on November 30, Newtown will host two more tree lighting events that weekend. The 11th Annual Sandy Hook Tree
Lighting will be Saturday, December 1. Sponsored by Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (SHOP), events will begin at 4 pm, leading to the lighting of the tree in Sandy Hook Glen, 2 Washington Avenue, at 6. Local shops and businesses will be offering holiday treats and gifts, face painting, karaoke at the tree, 3-D glasses to view the tree, jingle bell bracelets, eggnog and gingerbread latte samples, live music, hot cider, desserts, balloons, dining specials, and a raffle for one boy’s bicycle and one girl’s bicycle. SHOP is asking attendees to bring a donation for FAITH Food Pantry that evening. Collection bins will be hosted by The Children’s Adventure Center and at PJ’s Laundromat. Newtown Middle School Carolers will be at the tree that evening, continuing the caroling after the tree is lit for the season. Also, Hawleyville will host its 3rd Annual Tree Lighting event on Sunday, December 2. A committee from Stony Hill Four Corners Association is working on the details, but did confirm that this year’s event will run from 5:30 to 6:30 pm and also that it will be dedicated to “two longtime friends of Hawleyville,” Robert “Bucky” Dean and Charles Speidel, both of whom passed away within the last year.
Break Some Rules And Have Fun With Holiday Entertaining
Good Or Bad?
A visit to Santa Claus is supposed to be a fun outing for children of all ages, but all of us have seen photos of children who were not thrilled to be sitting on the bearded man’s lap. Have you or your child(ren) ever been filled with dread when it was time to visit Santa? Do you have a photograph of your unfortunate experience with Santa Claus as a child? or have you captured a less than rapturous Santa moment with your own children? Please consider sharing stories and photos with The Newtown Bee for a special holiday tale of (Santa) woe, at Nancy@thebee.com, subject line Bad Santa. —Bee file photo
(BPT) — “People are always getting ready to live but never living.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson This year as thousands of details that surround holiday gatherings threaten to ruin your holiday memories, take a few moments and think about how much nicer it would be if you could be enjoying the special moments with your family and friends. Instead, each year you spend countless hours in the kitchen, slaving over a hot stove while your guests enjoy themselves in the next room. Imagine if you could spend more time with them, sharing stories and enjoying their company. It can be done. It might be time to tweak some traditions, take a few shortcuts, and rethink your personal holiday entertaining rules. There are many options to help you entertain in style without all the hassle — and you will still get rave reviews. Planning ahead can help you reduce stress and give you back your holidays. Consider these five easy steps to simplify holiday entertaining: 1. Fill your freezer with tasty treats to pull out at a moment’s notice. Premade appetizers, entrees, sides, and desserts that you can thaw, bake, and serve are lifesavers during the holiday season. Many companies make it easy for you to have tasty holiday meals with minimal effort and maximum flavor. They do all the preparation; you get the glory. How would your guests enjoy this menu? Caramelized onion and feta pastry kisses, tender Chateaubriand, creamy mashed potatoes with porcini mushrooms, and a chocolate hazelnut ganache cake for dessert. Or how about a delectable menu of baby brie bites with cranberry chutney, paired with Beef Wellington, twice-baked potatoes, and a sour cherry peach tart? It will look like you spent days preparing this feast and you will be the only one to know it took a few clicks, a look in your freezer that morning, and a few minutes to get the meal on the table. 2. Rethink traditions. Just because your mother and her mother spent two days
preparing the Thanksgiving turkey dinner, it is okay to give yourself permission to create new traditions that fit your lifestyle while tempting the taste buds of the special people in your life. Want to change things up? How about a hickory smoked spiral sliced ham for Thanksgiving this year? Using a fully cooked, slowsmoked ham as the star attraction from the traditional turkey dinner will cut your preparation time on Thanksgiving by hours, and you will still have plenty of leftovers to enjoy after a day of bargain hunting on Black Friday. 3. Use free web guides to pair the perfect wine with your meal. If you want to create the perfect wine pairing for your holiday meal, there are great guides out there. They have done all the work for you, so relax and enjoy the compliments you will receive for making a wise decision when it comes to the perfect palate pleasers. 4. Rent holiday entertainment items. There is no need to store holiday entertaining items you may only use once a year. Many companies rent holiday serving items, china, wine glasses, tablecloths, and more. The items come ready to use and when you are finished with them, you simply send them back. No need to worry about storage space or washing linens. 5. Think potluck for entertaining. People are more than willing to bring a dish to pass for holiday gatherings. Try a simple request like, “We’re going to try something new this year. I’d like you to bring your favorite appetizer, side dish, or dessert. I’ll provide the entrée and beverages.” Few things are more social than a potluck meal. This allows you to get together with your favorite people without doing all the work yourself. Do a little planning up front and you will have a wonderful meal where everyone can take a bow. So this year, break some rules and live your holidays to the fullest. Just remember the words of the late Katharine Hepburn: “If you obey all the rules, you’ll miss all the fun.”

Easy Ways To Support The Troops During The Holidays Supporting the troops is an important thing to do, but sometimes it is hard to figure out how. Here are four easy ways to thank those who keep us safe every single day, even if you do not personally know someone serving. And with the holidays coming up, it is the perfect time of year to do it, as many of service men and women are away from family. Volunteer Your Time Former service members stateside should also be recognized. Show your appreciation for those who have helped protect our country by volunteering at your local Veterans Affairs hospital or nursing home this season, even if only for a few hours. You are sure to meet some fascinating men and women, and you will be bringing holiday cheer to those who may not have many visitors. If you can find the time, consider arranging a fundraiser to raise money to buy phone cards for the troops or even to purchase flowers to bring with you when you visit the veterans’ hospital or home. Similarly, you can volunteer to help their families at home by helping with yard work or running errands. Foster A Pet Foster a soldier’s pet while he or she serves overseas by getting connected with a military foster agency. When servicemen and women are called for duty, the first and best option in arranging for the care of their companion animals is to find a family member, friend, or neighbor who can temporarily take in the animals. But this option is not available to everyone, especially to military personnel stationed far from home. Shelters and private groups, such as Dogs on Deployment (DogsOnDeployment.org), Mili-
tary Pets FOSTER Project (www.netpets.org/militarypet/foster), and Operation Noble Foster (OperationNobleFoster.org.) can able to help place pets in foster homes temporarily. Contact these organizations to learn how to foster a pet for someone in the Armed Forces. Give Blood Giving blood through an organization like the American Red Cross can actually help troops hundreds and thousands of miles away. Military units may depend on rush shipments of blood during times of need, and maintaining an ample supply of all blood types is crucial. Host a blood drive at your workplace or community center, encouraging others to give the gift of life this holiday season. To find a blood drive or donation location near you, visit www.redcrossblood.org. Be Vocal Encouraging others to remember our deployed troops is one of the most wide-reaching ways to support the active military during the holidays. By reminding neighbors that our men and women overseas may need a boost of holiday cheer, you could touch hundreds of service members’ lives this season. Talk to people, post on Facebook, send out Tweets, or include a reminder in your holiday cards. Although the holidays can be a difficult time for deployed service members and their families, there are countless ways you can show your gratitude and appreciation this season. Whether it is a personalized gift, visit to a veteran, or blood donation, you can give back to those who give so much to our country. —StatePoint Media
Tips To Enhance Holiday Meals With Flavor (BPT) — Thanksgiving and Christmas meals often incorporate a lot of traditional foods and flavors, which as a host, may become a bit boring. But when you have friends and family visiting for several days, there are plenty of opportunities to shine with new flavors and interesting meals. As a host, embrace all of the meals you will be serving, which provides you with an excellent chance to show off your culinary skills. To help plan the menus and entertain your guests during their entire visit, Gaby Dalkin (What’s Gaby Cooking) and Lindsay and Taylor Landis (Love and Olive Oil) have tips to make everything much easier. Here are some tips to make holidays meals a memorable time: *Assess your ingredients — including
your spice cabinet — to ensure all holiday essentials like cinnamon, cloves, vanilla bean, nutmeg, flour, and sugar are available, and fresh, for all recipes. *Choose recipes and plan ingredients ahead of time. Purchase dry goods at least a week ahead, and perishable items a day or two before guests arrive so you have everything ready, without stress. *Make nonperishable snacks ahead of time and store them in containers to bring out when needed. Try this recipe from Ms Dalkin to keep your guests happy: Sweet and Spice Roasted Nuts 1 C raw whole cashews 1 C raw whole walnuts 1 C raw whole almonds 1 C raw pepitas
1 egg white 1 tsp water ½ C white sugar ¼ tsp sea salt ½ tsp cayenne pepper ½ tsp ground cinnamon Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper and set it aside. Combine the cashews, walnuts, almonds, and pepitas in a large bowl and toss to combine. Whisk together the egg white, water, sugar, salt, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon. Drizzle the wet mixture over the nuts and toss to combine, making sure they are evenly coated. Transfer the nuts to the baking sheet and spread in an even layer. Roast for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the nuts from the oven and
separate the nuts as they cool. Store in an airtight container and serve as needed. *Add a surprising and special touch to cocktails. Slice a vanilla bean in half and drop it into a bottle of vodka or bourbon several days prior to the arrival of your guests. It will add a delicious and warm flavor to all cocktails. Don’t forget about the children at your gathering either. “I always create interesting cocktails for my seasonal entertaining, and this year, I’m making something special for the kids,” says Lindsay Landis. Her holiday drink gives a festive gingerbread twist to the classic root beer float. Instead of using root beer with ice cream, she instead uses vanilla cream soda and spiced molasses syrup to make the drink taste just like liquid gingerbread.
