December 17 At Edmond Town Hall—

Holiday Classic To Continue Someday Cinema Series The Someday Cinema Series will feature two screenings on Sunday, December 17, at 4 and 7 pm of Frank Capra’s holiday classic, It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) at Newtown’s historic Edmond Town Hall Theater, 45 Main Street. Tickets are $3, and for those with hearing impairment, the matinee will be captioned. The film’s sponsors, Charles and Kristyn Galda, have been attending the classic films at Edmond Town Hall since the series began, and sponsored Wuthering Heights last year, as a gift to Kristyn for Mother’s Day. It’s a Wonderful Life is one of their family’s favorite films for the holidays. It’s a Wonderful Life is a heart-warming story of a young business man, George Bailey (James Stewart), who is frustrated by his sense of obligation to serve his town and family, yet desperately wants to escape. A careless mistake leads to big trouble when the antagonist financial magnate takes the advantage and threatens to ruin George’s business and possibly send him to jail. Desperate, George contemplates that the world would be better off without him. Fortunately an angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) literally jumps in to show him how things would have turned out if he’d never been born. Since 2014, Newtown Cultural Arts Commission has presented popular films of yesteryear, now called the Someday Cinema Series, coordinated by Jennifer Rogers, a longtime resident of Newtown. “The idea to show some classic films at the Edmond Town Hall Theater had been on my mind since college [late 80s],” said Mrs Rogers. “I would frequent a small theater in Cincinnati, which showed several films a day in repertory on their single screen. The films ranged from vintage classics to B movies to modern second-run films, and the pricing was very low, just like at my hometown theater in Newtown. “I saw Citizen Kane there

A traditional film for the Christmas season, It’s A Wonderful Life will be offered twice at Edmond Town Hall in December. Screenings of Frank Capra’s celebrated fantasy-drama-comedy of 1946, starring James Stewart and Donna Reed, will continue the Someday Cinema Series. on reel-to-reel, which was not a great print, but it was powerful,” she continued. “I just couldn’t fathom how it would be affordable to replicate that model here unless the Town Hall changed over to a digital projector. In 2012, Ms Rogers started talking to friends at the town hall about how great it would be to show films from 1939 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Greatest Year in Film, which was approaching in 2014. “I’d heard that distributors were going to stop using reelto-reel, so all theaters were going to have to convert to digital. This was my sign, I thought, so I proposed the concept of a film series to the Board of Managers in 2013 and they accepted,” Mrs Rogers said. A member of Newtown Cultural Arts Commission at the time, Mrs Rogers also presented her idea to that group, and received positive feedback. The key piece that was needed to make the series

successful was to find a sponsor to cover the licensing cost for each film. “The truth is that people want to support this theater, and we have been blessed to have found the sponsors we’ve had, both businesses and residents,” said Mrs Rogers. “One year, all but three films were sponsored by private citizens, which made me realize that the community supported us. There have even been quite a few sponsors who have even repeated their generosity.” Two Judy Garland films bookended the first year, beginning in May 2014 with The Wizard of Oz and ending in December with Babes in Arms. Those who were there will remember the special event for Gone with the Wind, screened in November 2014: enthusiastic audience members dressed in costume and an intermission buffet spread was served in the Alexandria Room. In the succeeding years, films have ranged from the 1931 Dracula, the earliest

offering, to 1992’s My Cousin Vinny. Every decade has been represented, and just about every major star and director has been featured larger than life on the high definition screen of the Edmond Town Hall Theatre. “Not only has it been wonderful to see some of my favorites on screen for the first time,” says Mrs Rogers, “but we’ve had young kids come with their great-grandparents, who remember seeing our oldest films for the first time when they were originally released. We’re bringing generations together, as well as attracting new patrons from outside our local area.” After the success of the first season, the Board of Managers decided to set aside the ticket proceeds from the cinema series for future technology improvements, focusing on the sound system first. This past September, ETH Operations Manager Sheila Torres announced to audiences that, “It’s kind of oldfashioned to save up for

things, but that’s what we did. “Because of the support of our sponsors, we were able to set aside 100 percent of the ticket proceeds to put toward improvements in our theater while concessions proceeds covered our operations expenses. We now have raised enough money to begin improving our sound system, which will be completed soon,” Ms Torres told those gathered for screenings of the 1971 feature Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. Since the digital high definition projector replaced the theater’s original reel-toreels, theater improvements have been ongoing. Theater Manager Tom Mahoney described the process of showing the old films as expensive and labor intensive, involving splicing the films together, which came shipped in separate “cans,” then unsplicing them again to ship out. The old projectors had to be monitored carefully, too, in case the film misfed. If that happened, he said, a film could get stuck in one position, and the hot lamp in the projector would melt the film, and could lead to fire. There’s no risk of that now with the digital projector, and the second-run movies actually run off a digital download, so no shipping costs. “We can now show classic films in better condition, many times, than when they were first distributed, especially if we get a restored edition on Blu-ray disc,” says Mrs Rogers. “Restorations not only crisp the images, they restore the contrast and true colors of sets and costumes, and even upgrade the sound recording. The result makes the film look as if it was just created.” Fans of classic, and modern classic, films can follow the Facebook page for Someday Cinema Series, or visit bit.ly/ SomedayCinemaSeries for this season’s details. Those interested in sponsoring a film, or becoming a contributor, are invited to contact Jennifer Rogers at sundaycinemaseries@gmail.com.

Tips To Reduce Holiday Spending, Without Cutting Back On Cheer (StatePoint) — Amid the merriment of the holiday season is a hard reality: nearly six in ten Americans do not have enough savings to afford an unexpected expense like a $500 car repair or $1,000 emergency room bill, according to a bank survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associations International. While 83 percent of US consumers are expected to spend $1,189 this holiday season, an amount equal to or more than they spent last year, there is no reason to enter the new year in bad financial standing if you do some smart planning and spend wisely. Here are some great ways to reduce your seasonal spending, without cutting back on the cheer. Figure out how much you can spend on gifts, decorations, etc. Divide the total amount into a per-gift limit. If it doesn’t add up, cut back the gift list or consider making a baked item

or other homemade gift, or giving a gift certificate for a service you might provide, such as babysitting, car washing, or housecleaning. Shop wisely. Watch for special sale days and coupons. Many online retail sites offer free shipping, discounts, and other promotions during the holiday season. After the holidays, look for deep sales on wrapping paper and greeting cards to save for next year’s celebrations. Spend differently. New ways to pay for items can make the task of budgeting organized and straightforward. Check out specialty e-retailers like Purchasing Power, which is offered by many employers as a voluntary benefit, and gives workers an opportunity to shop for thousands of brand name products they need now, for which they can make manage-

able payments over time through payroll deduction. With no credit checks, hidden fees, or interest, it is a service you may find gives you more flexibility over a traditionally expensive season. “It’s not always possible to pay for big ticket items in-full when you need them, whether you’re buying a tablet for your teenager for the holidays or a family vacation package next summer,” says Elizabeth Halkos, chief operating officer for Purchasing Power, LLC. “We created this solution to empower people to budget more wisely, and buy the things they need, while avoiding penalty fees and ballooning interest associated with other payment options.” Suggest a family gift exchange. Spare the expense and frustration of trying to find gifts for each member of your extended family. Instead, pull names from a hat and find something

special for just one person. For extra fun, play “Secret Santa,” keeping gift-giver identities concealed until the gift exchange. Spend time together. In lieu of gifts, bring everyone together over the holidays. Have a board game night or a day of service, such as serving meals at a shelter. Enjoy the season. There are many ways to celebrate spending little to no money. Curl up for a holiday movie marathon, bake cookies, or look for free holiday concerts in the area. Shopping malls and community centers typically offer a schedule of no-cost holiday entertainment. For a better financial start in the new year, spend wisely this holiday season. Smart budgeting and new payment options can make it easy.

Eight Tips For Navigating Holiday Food Temptations

(BPT) — The holidays throw in a lot of temptations from every direction if dieting or watching your weight. Holiday parties and get-togethers in particular can be a healthful eating challenge. Caught up in conversation among friends and family, surrounded by tasty food and drinks, it is easy to lose track of what and how much is being eaten. Registered Dietitian Sarah Galicki offers tips for staying the course through the holidays. “There are a lot of calories packed into this time of year,” she says. “You’re doing your holiday baking, people are dropping off candy and treats, there are parties with all-you-can-eat buffets and creamy drinks like eggnog, so it’s important to be prepared. It is possible to navigate the holidays without gaining weight by doing these things.” Eat first. Never go to a party hungry. If you do, chances are you’ll wind up eating too much, too fast. Eat a snack before you go, such as some Greek yogurt, which is loaded with protein and calcium. Add fruit for extra taste and nutrients, and top with pistachios for crunch and good fats. Drink wisely. If you want to indulge a little bit, have some champagne or white wine. A 4-ounce glass has approximately 100 calories. By comparison, a cup of traditional eggnog has 344 calories and 19 grams of fat (11 grams saturated fat). Skip the creamy drinks. The best bet is to avoid alcohol altogether if possible. Drink a spritzer made with sparkling water, cranberry and a lime instead. It looks festive, tastes great, and has

There are ways to enjoy holiday treats without going overboard. hardly any calories. Fill up on finger foods. Small, bite-size appetizers limit the calorie impact. A good option? Pistachios. They’re great to snack on; 49 have exactly 150 calories,

and they satisfy that crunchy craving. Plus, they’re full of nutrients and fill you up. The healthy fats will help regulate your blood sugar level throughout the night, which is really helpful if you’re drinking. Wrap some up decoratively and take along for a hostess gift to be sure there’s a healthy choice on hand. And everyone loves pistachios. Survey your options. Mindful eating is always key in any situation. Once the buffet table opens, take a visual sweep past it before jumping in line and making your selections. This way you’ll avoid piling one of everything onto your plate needlessly when you eventually pass through. Don’t be first in line. The food in a buffet line looks pretty in the beginning. Once people serve themselves, it’s not as appealing and you’ll eat less. Get a small plate. This trick helps limit portion size. Avoid the white stuff. Given other options, skip the white rice, white pasta, and white bread. They’re loaded with calories but no nutrients. Choose items with whole grains instead. They’re full of nutrients and have fiber, which will fill you up so you won’t eat as much. Delight in dessert. Dessert is probably the toughest temptation of all. But there’s no reason to skip. Most of us have a sweet tooth. Satisfy that sweet craving with some fresh fruit. To make sure it’s available, bring some as a hostess gift; it’s always welcome. “Overall, pace yourself,” advises Ms Galicki. “Enjoy the food and festivities.”

50th Annual Gingerbread Village And Christmas Bazaar

MIDDLEBURY — The holidays start early at St George’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury, most notably marked by the distinct warm scents of gingerbread and candies wafting through the halls. This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of the beloved Gingerbread Village and Christmas Bazaar, and promises to be an extra special celebration full of both joy and delight. Fifty years ago, the village humbly began as a few small gingerbread houses in the corner of the church Christmas Bazaar. Today it has evolved into an eight-day tradition celebrated by the entire community, and will be conducted Saturday, December 2, through Saturday, December 9 Each piece displayed in the village is handcrafted and completely edible. Houses are often built not just from gingerbread, but pretzels, pasta, beans, candies, gum, and breakfast cereal. In addition to houses, visitors will likely see sleigh riders, snowmen, reindeer, and perhaps even Santa. All items are on sale, and will be available for pickup on the final day. In addition to the village, gingerbread kit houses will also be for sales that provide everything needed to create a masterpiece at home. The bazaar offers a bake

shoppe (with delicious breads, cookies, cakes, muffins, etc), the opportunity to decorate your own gingerbread cookie (fun for all ages), raffle baskets galore (with many great gifts), and even the church’s version of a dollar store with holiday items. The children of St George’s will again host a room with Christmas crafts for sale. Proceeds support their mission work with the Indian nation of South Dakota. Lunch will be available on Saturdays, December 2 and 9, from 11 am to 2:30 pm. An all-you- can eat breakfast will be served on December 9, from 8:30 to 11 am. The church is at 393 Tucker Hill Road, at the intersection with Route 188. The village is open December 2, 10 am until 7 pm; Sunday, December 3, noon to 7 pm; Monday through Friday, December 4-8, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm; and December 9, 9 am to 4 pm. Admission and parking are free, and the church is handicapped accessible. For more information, visit gingerbreadvillagect.com. For general information contact the church at 203-758-9864 or stgeorges9864@att.net. Group appointments can be scheduled by calling 203-758-9557 or 203-217-4246.

Firehouse Fundraiser Returning On Black Friday

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue firefighters, friends, and family members quickly unloaded and sorted by size all 800 Christmas trees that had been on the back of an 18-wheeler on November 25, 2016. The trees had been shipped from Fontaine’s Tree Farm in Vermont, cut just hours earlier, and represented the inventory for the annual Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Christmas Trees Sale. This year’s event will again begin on Black Friday, November 24, with another arrival of fresh-cut balsam and Fraser fir trees. Trees up to cathedral height will be available, with the sale continuing to Christmas Eve or while supplies last. The event, which also offers wreaths in two sizes, cemetery boxes, pine roping, and kissing balls, is a fundraiser for the company. Sales will be weekends from 9 am until 9 pm, and weekdays from 6 to 9 pm (and earlier by chance). Call 203-270-4392 for additional information. SHVFR President Bradley Richardson and his daughter Kari checked trees as they were placed on stands last November, just prior to the opening of the fire company’s annual holiday fundraiser. Firefighters will again be selling Christmas trees, wreaths, kissing balls, pine roping, and cemetery boxes at their main station this holiday season. —Bee file photos

NYFS is licensed by the Connecticut Department of Children & Families as an outpatient clinic for children, and by the Department of Public Health as a psychiatric outpatient clinic for adults and as a facility for the care or treatment of substance abuse or dependent persons. It is not a crisis center, but a place where residents across the greater Danbury area can participate in ongoing support groups, receive individualized counseling, or take part in any number of activities and events that are created for all ages. NYFS is a nonprofit mental health clinic and youth service bureau. It is not a crisis center. Three Newtown Tree Lightings Planned By Shannon Hicks Newtown will once again hold three tree lightings this holiday season. All are scheduled for the first weekend of December. The 33rd Annual Ram Pasture Tree Lighting is scheduled for Friday, December 1. The event will begin with musical performances at 6:30 pm, with the tree lighting at 7, and continue with additional caroling, refreshments, and visits with Santa and Mrs Claus. In the hours leading up to this year’s event, Newtown Parks & Recreation employees will be placing luminarias around Ram Pasture, and on nearby roadways leading to the historic property. Residents along Main Street, Main Street South, Glover Avenue, Elm Drive, and Sugar Street will still be responsible for lighting the luminarias — cardboard boxes with cutout designs, again being donated by Curtis Packaging in Sandy Hook — but Parks & Rec will take care of setting them out, according to Renia Marini, who is helping to organize the event. “Residents will still be responsible for extinguishing the candles by 10 pm that night,” she added. The Newtown Chamber of Commerce is again hosting a fundraiser to cover costs associated with the event. Donors may contribute $10 for a bulb or luminaria to honor or memorialize someone special. A drop slot is available on the door of that office, so donations can be securely left if the office is not open when donors stop by. The 17th Annual Sandy Hook Tree Lighting will take place the following night, on Saturday, December 2. The event is being coordinated by Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity, and additional details are expected within the next week. The 8th Annual Hawleyville Tree Lighting and Toy Drive will then follow on Sunday, December 3. Residents are invited to gather at Barnabas Plaza, 23 Barnabas Road, for the one-hour event scheduled to begin at 5:30. Santa and Mrs Claus will be arriving via a Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company fire truck. The event will also include snacks, hot drinks, singing and dancing, and a toy drive for The Newtown Fund. This event is organized by Stony Hill Four Corners, a business association covering the Hawleyville section of Newtown and the Stony Hill section of Bethel.

Annual Open House Honors Past Traditions

Junior Docent Ellie Newton stands next to a tree decorated with handmade ornaments similar in style to what would have been created circa 1750, around the time The Matthew Curtiss House was built, during last year’s Newtown Historical Society Holiday Open House. The historical society will host its annual holiday open house this year on December 3. The public is invited to view traditional holiday decorations while enjoying light refreshments. —Bee file photos

With pins gripped in nimble fingers, Amelia Schill and Caitlin Farrell carefully strung cranberries and popped corn into a decorative garland during last year’s Newtown Historical Society Holiday Open House. Christmas with Santa Claus did not emerge until the 19th Century. With The Matthew Curtiss House — headquarters for the town’s historical society — focusing on items and traditions from the mid to late 18th Century, the docents were dressed for and demonstrating how young adults would have celebrated the season of that era. The public is invited to join historical society members for the annual open house on Sunday, December 3. The Matthew Curtiss House, at 44 Main Street, will be open from noon until 4 that afternoon. Admission is free; donations are welcomed. Call 203-426-5937 for additional information.

Woman’s Club Holiday Ornament Celebrates Longstanding Newtown Farm Newtown Woman’s Club, GFWC, Inc has unveiled its 30th annual pewter Christmas ornament, this year honoring Ferris Acres Farm. The 2017 ornament, which was again produced by Woodbury Pewter, depicts the barn, silo, and outbuilding that has been in the Ferris family since 1864. The farm has long been a Connecticut Dairy Farm of Distinction. William Davis Baldwin Ferris purchased the farm now known as Ferris Acres Farm in 1864 from Captain Hart Shepherd. Ferris was a descendant of Zachariah Ferris, who settled in Newtown in 1708, according to a brief history of the property written by Town Historian Dan Cruson. Each ornament is sold in a clear hard plastic case, and accompanied by a copy of Mr Cruson’s write-up. The barn depicted on this year’s ornament, according to Mr Cruson, is believed to have been raised sometime in the 18th Century. The barn was expanded in the early 1900s. Additions have enhanced the farm over the years, with major growth occurring in 1968 and 1995 as needed to accommodate milk production. Two wooden silos were added in 1958 and 1963 from defunct farms in the area. A cement silo was added in 1977.

The milk house burned down in 2003, and was rebuilt. The following year Charles III and his wife Shirley decided to open a creamery to help sustain a growing family. The result was the successful transition of a traditional dairy farm to a modern business that supports today’s sixth generation of a traditional dairy farm to a modern business that supports today’s sixth generation of the Ferris family. It stands as a model of what cre-

‘A Broadway Holiday’ FAIRFIELD — The New Haven Symphony Orchestra and Tony and Grammy Award nominated singer and actor Bryce Pinkham will perform and sing Christmas favorites from the Great White Way and holiday hits like Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride.” “A Broadway Holiday” will be performed Friday, December 15, at 7:30 pm, at Sacred Heart University’s Chapel of the Holy Spirit, 5151 Park Avenue. Tickets are $35. Bryce Pinkham is widely known for his work on television, including Mercy Street, and on Broadway, notably his role of Monty Navarro in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, for which he received nominations for both a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical as well as a Grammy Award (Best Musical Theater Album). After more than 700 performances of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Mr Pinkham went on to star in the Broadway revival of The Heidi Chronicles as Peter Patrone, for which he was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award as well as the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance in 2015. In the fall of 2016, he returned to Broadway leading the cast of Roundabout Theater and Universal Pictures’ Holiday Inn. Mr Pinkham also originated roles in Ghost the Musical and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson on Broadway. His upcoming film and television appearances include a series regular role in the second season of Mercy Street as well as performances in the Robert DeNiro comedy The Comedian, and Baz Lurman’s Netflix drama The Get Down. Previously, he has appeared on The Good Wife, Person of Interest, and the PBS miniseries God in America. Mr Pinkham is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama and Boston College. Tickets and additional information are available by calling 203-371-7908 or visiting edgertoncenter.org/special_events.php (Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts is the theater at SHU, so ticket sales are being handled by that venue).

ativity, ingenuity, and hard work have achieved to maintain this important family farm. Launched in 1988 featuring the town’s rooster weathervane as designed by Lorraine VanderWende, the Woman’s Club Christmas Ornament Project is an ongoing fundraiser for the club. Earlier ornaments have included Edmond Town Hall, The Budd House, C.H. Booth Library, the former Hawleyville Post Office building, The Little Theatre, Middle Gate District School 1850, Newtown Meeting House, Newtown Middle School, Newtown General Store, The Yankee Drover, and even the logo of The Newtown Bee, among others. Last year’s ornament memorialized Hawleyville’s Union Chapel. Ornaments are $15 each. They can be purchased at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street; Ferris Acres Creamery, 214 Sugar Street; the office of The Newtown Bee, 5 Church Hill Road; The Toy Tree, 14 Church Hill Road; and the Office of the Town Clerk at Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street. Proceeds from the annual project are donated by the club to local civic organizations. For additional information, contact Woman’s Club members Pat Bailey (203-426-3287) or Lisa Goosman (203-426-4192).
