Registration Open For NYFS Holiday Festival Events The annual Holiday Festival, which traditionally takes place along Main Street the first Sunday of December, will look very different this year. The 35th annual event will include a series of virtual, at-home, and socially distant activities taking place over the course of December 6-12. Registration, which raises funds for Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS), is open at newtownyouthandfamilyservices. org. NYFS, also the producer of the festival, is a nonprofit youth service bureau and mental health clinic for children, teens, adults, and seniors. The proceeds received from the festival fund autism programs, various community programs, and mental health services. The Holiday Festival staff and planning committee have put together a festival the community can participate in from the comfort of their own homes or while safely distancing. They have transformed favorites from the traditional event and have come up with new and exciting experiences. Event Details Registration and additional information is available from NYFS at 203-270-4335 or info@newtownyouthandfamilyservices. org, or on their website. The Festival of Trees is returning, and the community can participate in a few different ways. Donations of a decorated tree, wreath, or centerpiece are currently being sought. The public can then participate in the event next month by visiting and bidding on the donated items in person at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, on Sunday, December 6, between 10 am and 6 pm, and/or Sunday, December 12, between 9 am and 2 pm. The trees, wreaths, etc., will also be available for viewing and bidding online this year. Raffle tickets will be sold during the live events. Details on virtual participation and bidding are available on the NYFS website. New for 2020 are Elf Chats — Live

from the North Pole. Children of all ages can have a personalized 10-minute video chat with an elf in Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole. During their personalized scheduled Elf Chat, children will get to see the toy their elf friend is working on, find out what it’s like to help Santa get ready for Christmas, ask questions, read a story, etc. Various times are available throughout the week of the festival. This year’s festival marks the debut of The Merrymakers — Carol-O-Grams. Spread some holiday cheer and send a small group of carolers to brighten the day of a friend or family member, or schedule a visit for yourself.
The Merrymakers is a group of 6 to 8 carolers who will safely distance — 12 feet apart — and wear masks while singing three non-denominational songs. Various times are available through the week. While immediate family members of performers will be the only ones allowed to view the live performance of The Nutcracker Suite by students of Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet & Voice, the rest of our community can still enjoy the show. Those who offer a donation of any amount to NYFS will receive a link to view a recording of the December 6 performance. Also new this year is the Road To Disney
Scavenger Hunt. The grand prize is five one-day hopper Disney World tickets. Gather your “quaranteam” and embark on a scavenger hunt. The hunt starts at 1 pm on Sunday, December 6, with teams departing from and returning to NYFS on Berkshire Road. The contest will take participants to eight different locations within Newtown and Sandy Hook. Cost is $5 per team, which is one carload. The Edible Creations Competition is back for the second year. Sugar cubes, gumdrops, marshmallows, graham crackers, and more… this is more than just gingerbread. The public can participate by building an edible creation and/ or voting for their favorites. Photos of entries will be posted on social media during the festival, and the community can vote for their favorite one. Local businesses like Castle Hill Chocolates, BD Provisions, and Nutmeg Olive Oil are donating stockings and baskets filled with goodies for the Secret Stocking Silent Auction. This is not your average secret stocking event. Bidders will know who put together each offering, and will get a preview of what each includes, but the rest will remain a mystery. The silent auction will be conducted done online the week of the festival. There will also be an Elf on the Shelf Competition via social media where residents can show off the crazy antics their elf is up to, virtual Bedtime Stories with Santa at 7 pm on Monday, December 7, and Thursday, December 10, and Letters to Santa. Children are invited to drop their letters off at The Toy Tree, 14 Church Hill Road, through December 18. Santa will respond with a personalized letter. The Holiday Festival is the area’s longestrunning holiday event and is the largest annual fundraiser for NYFS. Support from the community and longstanding sponsors like Newtown Savings Bank, the festival’s platinum sponsor, make the Holiday Festival possible.
Bethlehem Still Planning Christmas Town Festival
BETHLEHEM — COVID-19 restrictions and concerns have made it necessary to adjust the size and scope of this year’s Christmas Town Festival, but organizers are still planning an event for the first weekend of December. As of November 9, the 40th annual event will run from 5 to 8 pm on Friday, December 4, and from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, December 5. The festival is in the center of Bethlehem, at the junction of Route 61 and Route 132. Friday night at 6 pm will be the tree-lighting ceremony. WFSB-TV Channel 3 news personality Irene O’Connor will help Santa light the town’s beautiful 85-foot Christmas tree. Santa will stay for the balance of the festival, giving families the opportunity to take their own safe distance memorable photos with him. There is plenty of free parking available behind the town buildings along the west side of Main Street (Route 61). The festival’s 2020 Christmas ornament, celebrating “Santa’s Other Ride,” will be available for purchase. Ornaments from many previous years will also be available for purchase. Several of the town’s nonprofit organizations will be selling food and/or beverages. In addition to Santa photos, on Saturday there will be a series of free music concerts on the town green. COVID-19 restrictions and concerns have made it necessary to adjust the size and scope of this year’s event. There will be no craft vendors and no commercial food vendors. Previous years have seen up to 70 vendors, set up indoors. Staging such an event this year would mean spacing between booths and asking customers to line up at least six feet apart from each other, among other challenges. There will also be no train or hayride, and no indoor bell concerts this year. All Connecticut COVID-19 restrictions in effect on December 4-5, such as wearing face masks and maintaining social distance, will apply to this year’s festival. Organizers say this year’s festival should still be a joyous

event for those who are able to attend. Saturday Morning 5K On Saturday morning there will be a 5K “Santa Made Me Do It” road race before the start of the festival. The race will begin at 10 am and is limited to the first 150 runners to register. Registration must be done in advance through santamademerun.com or by downloading the application from that website and mailing it in; there will be no race day registration available. Cost is $25 per person, $10 for ages 12 and under. Christmas attire/costumes are welcomed. There will not be a 2-mile walk or Kids Run Fun this year. On race day, there will be a paper bag for each runner, arranged alphabetically on tables, for people to pick up. Each bag will contain a race bib and safety pins, T-shirt, commemorative race ornaments. Packet pick-up opens at 8:30 am. Runners will be required to wear masks at the start line.
They can remove masks only after clearing the start line. Staggered starts will begin every 30 seconds, with 20 people in each wave. The race course has been reconfigured to create a better flow this year. The race starts from in front of Memorial Hall. From there, runners will head north on Main Street South (Route 61), then turn onto West Road, heading west. They will take the next right, onto Munger Lane. At the end of Munger, they will turn right again, this time onto Bellamy Lane, heading east. Near the intersection with Main Street North, runners will turn around, and then travel west on Bellamy until they reach Lake Drive. They will do another turn around once they near Lake Drive’s intersection with West Shore Drive, and travel south on Lake. When they reach Bellamy Lane again, they will turn right, this time heading west; then turn left onto Munger, heading south, again for the full length of that road. At the end of Munger they will turn right, onto West Road, and head east until they return to Main Street North. At Main Street North they will go north until they reach the finish line at Memorial Hall. Runners should park behind Bethlehem Town Hall, Bethlehem Library, Memorial Hall, or Christ Episcopal Church, all along Main Street, opposite Bethlehem Green. There will be no volunteers and no water stop on the course. Post race, there will be bags for runners, containing a water bottle, granola bar, and a piece of fruit, all laid out on a table. There will also be plenty of hand sanitizer. The goal of the annual celebration is to raise funds to support Memorial Hall, the community center of Bethlehem, by holding an affordable, family-friendly Christmas festival. For additional Christmas Town Festival information call 203-266-7510, e-mail info@christmastownfestival.com, or visit christmastownfestival.com.

Show Your Pet You Care This Holiday Season
During the holidays, there are endless ways to show humans around us how much we love them. Finding ways to extend the joy of the season to pets who are a part of the family takes a bit more creativity. Here are five ideas for celebrating with furry friends this holiday season: Spend quality time together. Between shopping, cooking, and decorating, the hustle and bustle of the season can be distracting. Regardless of what’s going on, though, it’s important to spend quality time with your pet each day. Go on some extra long walks with your dog, extend your cat’s playtime sessions, and brush your pet’s coat. These activities may help alleviate situational anxiety brought on by shifting holiday routines.
Pamper your pet. The holiday season can be tiring and stressful on every member of the family, including dogs. Consider canine relaxation and CBD-infused treats. Whether your dog is in incredible health or is experiencing discomfort, these chews can have calming and soothing properties, which may help ease a pet’s situational anxiety should travel or house guests be part of the plans this season. Containing human-grade ingredients, no fillers and no chemical preservatives, one brand many pet owners turn to is Pet Releaf CBD-Infused Edibites. These handmade chews come in flavors like Peanut Butter & Banana, Blueberry & Cranberry, and even Pizza. Stuff your pet’s stocking. A whopping 72 percent of pet par-

ents plan to give their pets a gift or stocking stuffer this holiday season, according to a recent Pet Releaf survey conducted by the Harris Poll. Not only is hanging
a stocking for pets a fun way to include them in a family tradition, it’s also a great opportunity to give products a test run. Look for pet products offered
in trial or small sizes. Decorate safely. When selecting holiday décor, prioritize a pet’s safety above all. Steer clear of plants toxic to pets, like holly, poinsettias, and mistletoe, and avoid stringy items such as tinsel, curling ribbons, or other tree and gift trimmings that, when ingested, can cause intestinal blockage. Outfit your pet. Taking a festive family portrait for this year’s greeting card? Just want your pet to be comfortable and stylish on all those winter walks in the months ahead? With several major retailers offering ugly holiday sweaters for pets in a variety of sizes and designs, it’s easy to get your pet in on the fun. The holiday season is all about showing loved ones you care. This year, make sure that also includes furry friends.
Keeping Traditions Alive During An Unusual Holiday Season This holiday season may look a bit different due to social distancing, but just because everyone is not physically together does not mean families cannot share their favorite traditions. The Olesen family of O&H Danish Bakery in Racine, Wisc., knows how important holiday traditions are to feeling connected to loved ones. Now in its fourth generation, the family-owned and -operated bakery is sharing its best tips for creating holiday cheer from anywhere. Celebrate virtually. In a survey commissioned by the bakery and conducted by SWNS Media Group and OnePoll, nearly 80 percent of respondents say time with family is their favorite part of the holiday season. Whether the tradition is a Christmas movie marathon, a caroling session
Pronounced “hoo-ga,” the Danish term hygge means creating a cozy atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life, such as the warm glow of candlelight, a steaming cup of cocoa, or home baked goods that carry with them the joy of the season. —StatePoint Media photo
around the piano, or eating certain foods and baked treats, all of these activities can be celebrated together over video chat this year.
Share traditional foods. The sensory memories that good food creates are powerful. In fact, 44 percent of people say the holiday spirit
wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t have their traditional holiday dessert. For many families, that favorite dessert is O&H’s Kringle, a traditional Danish treat made of 36 layers of butter and pastry. Over the past 70 years, the award-winning bakery has shipped Kringles to more than 100 countries, making landfall in all seven continents, including Antarctica. This year, doorstep delivery from even more vendors makes it easy to order a traditional favorite for your own household or send a gift to family members near and far. Check with your favorite local bakery to see what their plans are. Many are adopting take-out, curbside, delivery options this year. Plan ahead. When it comes to ordering gifts and specially
baked treats, make sure to account for busy schedules and congested delivery services to ensure everything arrives on time. Take note of shipping times and policies, as well as ordering deadlines for each company. Create hygge. Evoking the sights, sounds, and aromas of a typical holiday season will help make this year feel more cheerful. Take a cue from Danish culture and embrace hygge. Pronounced “hoo-ga,” it means creating a cozy atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life, such as the warm glow of candlelight or a steaming cup of cocoa — and there is no better time of year to do it than the holiday season. This year might be especially difficult for families who are physically separated, but there are many ways to spread cheer and keep traditions alive.

A Wm. H. Zinn trade card, from the collection of Historic New England and a historic mincemeat trade card from the collection of Lynn Museum, Lynn, Mass. Both will be among the illustrations used by Ken Turino during his “Spirit of Christmas Past” lecture hosted by the Lockwood-Mathews Museum in early December.
England, for “The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in New England.” The virtual talk will be presented Sunday, December 6. It will begin at 5:30 pm and is expected to last one hour. Turino will take questions from viewers after his presentation. This well-illustrated lecture traces the development of the celebration of Christmas, from the time it was outlawed in 17th Century New England through the beginning of the 21st Century, when all the trappings of a traditional Christmas were in place. For many, the celebration of Christmas today is the most important holiday of the year. Many of the customs that are taken for granted as part of the current holiday festivities and religious celebrations are actu-

Among the topics discussed will be how the Christmas tree became popular, halls were decked, and Santa Claus came to town. Wilton Historical Society Hosting Livestream ‘Gingerbread Man’ Puppet Show Following their sold-out holiday puppet show at Wilton Historical Society last year, WonderSpark is returning virtually for the 2020 holiday season. Puppets and kids can get into the holiday groove with an engaging, livestreamed performance of The Gingerbread Man on Saturday, December 5, from 2 to 3 pm. Fusing puppetry and storytelling with memorable characters and sing-along songs, this is the classic story of a little running cookie with a holiday twist. Watch the Gingerbread Man outwit and outrun various hungry animals — and figure out what he really wants for Christmas. Dubbed the Best Puppet Theater In NYC by TimeOut New York Kids, WonderSpark engages kids of all ages as they listen, laugh, interact directly with characters, and can ask questions about puppetry and story-
telling afterward. This ancient art form engages the imagination and kickstarts a love of theater at an early age. Includes a DIY puppet craft activity following the show. WonderSpark Puppets performs highly interactive puppet shows around the world. Since 2009 they have been entertaining family audiences at New York City landmarks like Central Park, the New York Public Library, and Bryant Park, and since 2020 have been streaming online to schools and families internationally. Cost is $25 per family, and registration is essential. Register by sending e-mail to info@wiltonhistorical. org or go to wiltonhistorical.org. Once registered attendees will be e-mailed the Zoom code and instructions for interacting and submitting questions.
A classic story with a holiday twist, The Gingerbread Man will be offered as an online puppet show hosted by Wilton Historical Society.
Spread Joy To Everyone From Anywhere This Holiday COVID-19 restrictions mean the 2020 holiday season will be different this year, but that does not mean anyone needs to become a Grinch. Although extensive travel, large group gatherings, and many traditional activities cannot happen, there are imaginative ways to be just as joyful with a dash of creativity. In fact, many people are embracing this as an opportunity to take a unique approach and discover new ways to make one-of-akind memories with family, friends, and coworkers. Alternative Work Holiday Parties The annual work holiday event is typically a time to enjoy good food and celebrate a job well done. With the pandemic causing many offices to go remote and placing restrictions on gatherings, this year will have to be a celebration of a different kind. Fortunately, technology is making many things possible. Employers who want to show employees they care are expected to shake things up in creative ways, such as sending meals to everyone through home delivery and then meeting online to enjoy them together. Consider the fun of a video gathering for an ugly sweater contest paired with games that can be played digitally such as bingo and holiday trivia. Hiring a musician to play for a virtual happy hour sing-a-long is another possibility, and of course, there’s always karaoke. Online Shopping Expected To Soar Last year, 56 percent of consumers reported they would make their holiday purchas-

es online vs at retail stores, according to the National Retail Federation. The experts at Purchasing Power — an employee purchase program — have witnessed this trend growing exponentially since March and expect at-home shopping to soar over the upcoming holidays. With so many people continuing to work or attend school at home, Purchasing Power anticipates the most popular (and practical) gifts will include new laptops and home electronics, personal health and fitness equipment, and ergonomic office furniture.
Toys, video games — there are many new products and gaming systems this year for youth and adult gamers alike — and small luxury items will also bring smiles to those longing for an unexpected surprise during the 2020 holidays. Making More Memories At Home With health officials recommending avoiding all but essential travel, people with health and safety on their minds have minimized the use of airline travel considerably. Many people will not be heading back to visit parents and grandparents, celebrating
traditions like the baking of holiday treats together or sharing good tidings of the season in person. Consider other alternatives this year and plan a family video chat time to bake cookies together. Select and share a recipe ahead of time and then sign on to a digital device to talk with each other while everyone also prepares dough, then bakes and enjoys treats. This might be the perfect time to tackle that traditional family recipe that has been handed down for generations and see who proves most successful. For younger children with shorter attention spans, families might have success with a virtual cookie or cupcake decorating party, or perhaps it is time to get crafty and teach the little ones to cut out paper snowflakes or create colorful garlands from paper loops or festive, seasonal strings of popcorn and cranberries. As everyone adds the perfect touches to their holiday treats, exchange memories of holidays past and even pull out old family photo albums or videos to reminisce. Make sure to enjoy a few treats together and take still photos, in addition to video, to capture these special moments for future celebrations. Finally, wrap the fun up by reading a traditional holiday book to little ones before bedtime. The 2020 holiday season is sure to be unique, but “different” can still be good. With an optimistic mindset and clever ideas, everyone can put a new spin on family and workplace traditions and make some lasting memories.
Giving Back At The Holidays Can Fit Into Retirement Plans When the holidays approach, Americans feel moved to open their wallets a little more to help those in need. For retirees, that seasonal urge can fit neatly into their overall retirement plan — if they’re intentional about how they go about it. Patrick Rush says charitable giving is a frequently neglected area of financial planning. It is, however, “important for one’s financial health and spiritual and emotional well being,” according to the CEO of Triad Financial Advisors and the ForbesBooks author of Gain Big and Give Back: Financial Planning with Intention. “I think it’s a valuable thing to do at any stage of life, and just because you’re retired doesn’t mean you have to cut back,” he added. “You can combine your passion for a cause with smart tax and investment advice.” Adding a charitable-giving com-
ponent to someone’s financial plan is not always simple, though, and not just because everyone has different amounts of money they potentially could set aside for such largesse. “Every person comes into my office with a unique set of experiences, values, wants, needs, fears, hopes, and desires,” Rush says. “Consequently, you could give five people $1 million each and they’re all going to respond to it in a myriad of different ways. Each financial plan must account for these emotional and personal nuances.” That said, Rush has suggestions for those who want to satisfy their urge for charitable giving — and take advantage of deductions the tax laws allow before December 31: Donor-Advised Funds These are personal charitable accounts opened in the name of
one or more donors and held in custody by a nonprofit organization, such as a community foundation, university, or other IRS-qualified charity. Here’s how it works: If someone has $50,000 in a stock, they can sell that stock and, instead of paying the capital gains tax, place the money in a donoradvised fund, and claim the full $50,000 as a charitable deduction. They do not have to donate the money all at once. The money remains in the fund and can be donated bit by bit over a period of years. In the meantime, it draws interest. “You save money and benefit a worthy cause,” Rush says. “That’s a win-win for all parties.” Qualified Charitable Distributions This tax strategy is available to investors over the age of 70½, and can be especially helpful to those
72 and older who must take IRSmandated required minimum distributions from their IRA or 401(k). “If you’ve accumulated a lot in these accounts, this often means you’re forced to withdraw way more than you actually need,” Rush says. “But an option is to write a check to a favorite charity from the retirement account. In that way, the distribution is not taxed, but still counts as your required withdrawal. The donation also lowers your taxable income.” A Coronavirus Relief Bill Exception Generally, if the standard deduction is taken when filing income taxes charitable giving cannot be deducted. An exception was created, however, as part of the coronavirus relief bill passed in March.
For 2020, taxpayers can count up to $300 as a charitable deduction when they file your taxes in 2021, even if they take the standard deduction. That is worth remembering as December 31 nears and taxpayers are feeling the holiday spirit. “Those charities and nonprofits certainly could use the money,” Rush says. Rush says it is important to remember that charitable giving and community volunteering have meaning beyond money. “Each December, you can find our employees ringing bells for the Salvation Army,” he says. “Some of our clients get involved, too, and my family turns out as well. It’s important to me to inculcate these values in my children. “It’s never too early to learn to be grateful for what you have and to express that gratitude by giving something back.”

The Town Players of Newtown is presenting a virtual holiday fundraiser to help raise money for The Little Theater. The special event will feature a performance of an original one-act play following by holiday caroling. The event will open at 2 pm Sunday, December 20, with Always, Anastasia, a one-act mystery written and directed by Michele Leigh. The play follows Nick (played by John Squires), a disillusioned cop whose wife, Grace (Nikki Yatsenick), disappears on Christmas eve. Nick’s partner, Danni (Joy Harris), investigates the case. Always, Anastasia was first performed at the Producers’s Club in New York City and was selected for publication in The Best Plays from the Strawberry Festival. Following the play, the audience will be invited to enjoy old-fashioned holiday
caroling, led by Amy Cabot and Leif and Clara Smith. Lyrics will be shown on the screen. A minimum donation of $10 will be rewarded with a link to join the virtual holiday fundraiser. For details and registration visit newtownplayers.org or donorbox.org/tp2020.
Simple Tips For A Safe And Healthy Holiday Season
Traditionally, the holiday season is a time to gather with family and friends to reminiscence and celebrate all that has happened throughout the year. With an ongoing pandemic, however, many are left looking for new and unique ways to enjoy those timehonored traditions in a way that keeps everyone safe and healthy. So while things will likely look different than we are accustomed to, that does not mean families and friends have to miss out on those most important and cherished traditions. Instead, consider trying these tips and tricks for safe, socially distant holiday fun.
Host Safely For those who plan to host, there are a few precautions that can take to keep guests safe. If possible, take gatherings outside where physical distance and airflow can be increased. Choose outdoor activities, such as a bonfire or an active game. On colder days, bring out the hats, coats, and gloves. Try using a patio or porch heater to warm up. To limit travel, it is best to only invite people from the local area and limit the number of attendees. Provide information to guests about local safety guidelines and take steps to prevent spread by providing masks and hand sanitizer. Get Help From The Experts With everything to consider this year, there is nothing better than receiving a help-
ing hand in the kitchen, especially one that can be delivered right to your doorstep. Many restaurants have fully prepared, precooked holiday meal spreads, as well as a la carte sides and desserts that can be delivered to homes, or pre-ordered and picked up. This helpful solution is also perfect for those taking extra precautions during this unusual holiday season. Go Virtual, And Plan Ahead With many people unable be able to see family and friends in person this holiday season, consider spending time with loved ones from afar by using one of the many apps and programs that people use to gather virtually. To keep the conversation flowing, prepare a list of fun topics, questions to ask, or games to play while digitally celebrating the season together. Shop Conveniently Instead of heading out to crowded malls or stores, do as much online shopping as possible. Be sure to start early, as shipping times will likely be delayed and supplies of the season’s most popular gifts may be limited. For those who do plan to shop in person, be sure to check for the latest local guidelines and then follow them to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy. Don’t let the pandemic steal joy and ruin time-honored holiday traditions — and who knows? This year’s adaptations may even lead to new traditions.
