Aboriginal Happenings From Across Canada Treaty agreement in principle signed with KÕ omoks VANCOUVER -The B.C. and Canadian governments took a critical step Saturday in reaching a treaty with the KÕ omoks First Nation on Vancouver Island by signing an agreement in principle.

If the final negotiations are successful, the deal will give the KÕ omoks $17.5 million in cash and 2,043 hectares of land in the Courtenay-Comox area. The deal will also recognize the first nationÕ s right to have a say on a larger traditional territory, access to water, fisheries and traditional hunting rights. “This is the first step toward a prosperous future for my people. It is a historic day for the KÕ omoks Nation. I am proud to have been a part of this,” Chief Ernie Hardy said in a statement. Federal Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development John Duncan and B.C. Minister of Aboriginal Relations Mary Polak also signed the agreement.

Two Ontario First Nations communities declare state of emergency ONTARIO -Two First Nations communities in northern Ontario have declared a state of emergency and are evacuating residents as ice breakup on a nearby river causes jams and flooding. The evacuation of “vulnerable residents” in the First Nations of Kashechewan and Fort Albany began as a precaution yesterday and is continuing today.

A spokesman with OntarioÕ s Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services says the plan is to evacuate some 300 residents today and take them to the northern Ontario towns of Kapuskasing and Wawa. Greg Flood says approximately 50 people were taken from Kashechewan

to Kapuskasing yesterday, where preparations to house them have been made. He says a breakup of ice on the Albany river has caused localized flooding and ice jams near the two communities which sit on the James Bay coast. Flood says weather conditions, mainland access for residents on an island and aircraft availability may impact the number of people evacuated from the communities today. The ministry says vulnerable residents being airlifted out include the elderly, women, children and people with medical conditions. The operation is being co-ordinated by Emergency Management Ontario and the Ministry of Natural Resources, in collaboration with federal, provincial, municipal and First Nations officials. The ministry has said the first priority of everyone involved is the health and safety of the residents of the communities. SOURCE -WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

announced like UFC 152 which will be held in Toronto on September 22nd and UFC 154 in Montreal on November 17th.

Well UFC stands for Ultimate Fighting Championship. UFC 149 has been announced that it is going to be coming soon but it will be visiting Calgary in Canada. The company has been all over the United States but Canada is still pretty new live territory so this will be a huge change in the relationship between the UFC and Canada.

Canada has a lot of events coming up soon that should do nothing but

Wright has even gone as far to claim that Canada has never had a closer relationship with the UFC He says that the sport is being embraced in a way that has never happened before.

The mixed-martial arts powerhouse announced the debut of a life UFC showdown in Alberta. UFC 149 will be held in Scotiabank Saddledome on July 21st.

There is a lot of talk about how nice it is that the UFC 149 is debuting in Alberta. White goes on to talk about how the place has been the mecca of mixed martial arts sense he set foot in the country. Wednesday wasnÕ t the only big news for Canada fight fans. In addition to the UFC 149 there were also a couple of other events

That just shows that a lot of people in Canada really do want to have UFC events closer to home, and to enjoy the live experience of the sport. There are fans world wide so expanding doesnÕ t do anything but promote the sport and build on the existing fan base. Ò The pay-per-view in Calgary has been coming for a long time”, said Wright. Edmonton and the Alberta cities are constantly the top in the worlds market for pay-per-view. The UFC is also aware of how many people who go to events like that even if they have to travel to get to the event.

The UFC president Dana White and Tom Wright, who is the UFC director of Canadian operations, recently met up to announce the long awaited UFC 149.

The event will be estimated to have 20,000 tickets which are expected to become sold out. The main event is going to feature reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

The UFC doesnÕ t normally announce events this far ahead but believe it is such a huge deal world wide they decided it would be great for the fans. improve the relationship between Canada and the UFC which will be great news for fans worldwide. At the interview with media Wright said that these events would become big for the company in 2013 and 2014. He had been quoted saying that it speaks to the strength of the sport in Canada and how important it is to developing the sport in Canada. He goes on to say that having consistency

It seems the UFC really wants to engage the fans into this event and want to build up momentum and get everyone ready long before it even happens. There will be a lot of buzz about this event but only time can tell what will happen. I for one will be front and centre to what is sure to be a bone crunching night of action.

Calgary Ecstasy Deaths Reports online from Calgary, Canada, are that a large number of deaths are being blamed on a drug sold as a pill and called ecstasy. These pills are reportedly also laced with another drug known as PMMA. The deaths are blamed on the PMMA. However, there are also deaths reported about people who had taken just the ecstasy pill. Police are very concerned and are trying to educate people about the dangers of ecstasy. There is a secret popular assumption that ecstasy is as harmless as a few drinks. That assumption is totally false according to the police who have been called upon to investigate the recent deaths linked entirely to the drug ecstasy and to laced ecstasy pills. The information given about these ecstasy caused deaths in Calgary and in Edmonton is as follows. On Monday, Calgary police reported that 7 people had died as a result of using ecstasy that they reported as having been tainted. These deaths have been occurring since July according to the Calgary police. The ecstasy pills are mixed with paramethoxymethamphetamine that is also known for short as PMMA. The police were made aware of the laced ecstasy pills when a victim of those pills, Cody Gorlick, age 23 was given an autopsy and the paramethoxymethamphetamine was found in his system. The toxicology determination as the reason for the sudden death of Cody Gorlick was performed by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology on Cody GorlickÕ s body. Evidence of the drug known as ecstasy was also found in his system.

On Sunday, the death of a 37 year old man was investigated and it is supposed that he had taken the PMMA laced ecstasy pills. Until a toxicological report is done and evidence of his having used the PMMA laced ecstasy pills is found in his body, the police are only assuming that he died from the laced ecstasy pills. The police conjecture that his death is due to the laced ecstasy pills because two of his friends who had been partying with him admitted that they two had been taking drugs and ecstasy. The two friends were taken to the hospital where they are reportedly in serious condition. The police released that information through Sergeant Mike Bossley who added that the two friends of the diseased 37 year old man were all partying in the same residence where the drugs were being used. The residence mentioned was raided by he police and drugs of all descriptions were taken and given to their crime lab to be tested. Besides these reports of drug users found dead in Calgary, news of laced ecstasy was reported on Monday in the afternoon from Edmonton. A woman was taken to a Calgary hospital from Edmonton after being taken ill when taking a laced ecstasy pill on Saturday morning according to the friend who took her to the hospital in Calgary from Edmonton. The friend told police that he and his girlfriend had been partying in the Republik Nightclub in Calgary. Sergeant Bossley wants the public to be made aware of the dangers posed by the pill known as ecstasy. He said that contrary to popular opinion, ecstasy is not a harmless drug that is known to be taken by people in their

own homes, in bars and wherever they can take it at parties. He said that the pill called ecstasy can cause death if mixed with other drugs. In other news about the ecstasy laced pills being used in Canada, there are reports of the death of 18 people in British Columbia who had taken the laced ecstasy pills. Another person was also found death and is being tested to determine if his death was also a result of having taken the laced ecstasy pills. That would bring the numbers up to 19 of those having died due to the laced ecstasy pills being ingested. To date, toxicological reports indicate that 5 of the 18 dead from ecstasy also had PMMA in their system. These reports show that while the deaths from ecstasy is being reported as due to their having been laced with PMMA, some of those deaths were caused by the ecstasy pill itself and not connected to their having been mixed with PMMA. The reports also indicate that ecstasy pills are considered a social drug in Canada and their spread is almost unchecked. Police are trying to bring attention to the public that ecstasy is not a harmless social drug comparable to liquor. The sudden deaths caused by the ecstasy pills are proof that some people can be affected differently from others by drugs like ecstasy that is a death causing drug especially if mixed with other drugs. The alarming number of deaths of people who were known to have taken ecstasy is prompting the police to release their names to the public at large.

The Teenage Role Model It is a well-known fact that the greatest influences that a child has in its life are parents and peers. Parents are there to act as authoritative life guides; ultimately showing kids the way until they reach adulthood. On the other hand, interacting with peers gives kids the opportunity to put into practice the things that theyÕ ve learned from their parents. But who do kids learn from when their parents arenÕ t around and other children are nowhere to be found? Who do kids learn from when an issue is too complex to seek out the help of a peer, and completely foreign to their parentsÕ generation? The answer 18

is simple: teenagers. Whether they be family members, neighbors or complete strangers, any interaction that a child has with a teenager is bound to be a learning experience. Although they didn’t sigh up for the job, teens are role models for younger generations. Because children will emulate what they say and do, it is their job to keep a watchful eye and make sure that they are presenting admirable behavior.

strive to put their best on display for all to see. Children who watch teenagers slacking off will receive the message that such behavior is appropriate to do once they reach that age. Those who have younger siblings should make it a point to let those youngsters see them putting an effort towards something; it will show children that working hard can be rewarding and enjoyable. Those who are participating in team sports, for example, can invite youngsters along to watch Strive to Do Your Best a practice session or a game. No additional effort will be needed, Being a role model does not mean and kids will be able to see how that teenagers cannot have fun. hard work and practice can pay off It simply means that teens must in the long run.

Show Respect for Others What often goes hand-in-hand with self-respect is respect for others. Children are not usually allowed to bicker and argue amongst themselves. While teens should definitely interact with their peers, it is important for them to interact with those individuals who are positive influences on their own lives. Teens should strive to maintain healthy relationships - whether they be romantic or otherwise - and remove themselves from those that tear away at their sense of self.

Honor Your Word While it is important to be able to trust others, kids should be taught the importance of being trustworthy. Teens are able to help this process along by honoring their word and making good on promises. Whatever promises teens make to their parents or younger siblings should be followed by action. This will teach children the importance of accountability.

by Christine McFarlane cover photos by John Medeiros

Angeline Joe is a strong Dene woman who knows what it means to work hard. She approaches everything with a positive attitude, no matter how challenging a situation may become and credits learning this positive attitude from her parents and family and the fact they raised her to never dwell on the past and to only look ahead to the future.

and her father, a former member of the Army at Currie Barracks, she tries not to let the impact affect her as “my parents never spoke of their difficult childhoods, they did the best they could with what they had, and though we never had much growing up, we always had love, a roof over our heads, warm meals on the table and the love of family and our community.”

Joe, a member of The Champagne/ Aishihik First Nation in Haines Junction, Yukon Territory who now resides and works in Alberta says, “I was raised as the granddaughter of a traditional Chief Hutchi Joe, and my grandfather provided not just for his family but his entire village. We were raised to always respect and help our Elders as they are the only link to our past and we were taught to always look out for our youth because they are the only hope for our future.”

It was life in The Yukon for Joe while growing up that taught her to never complain because she recalls how “Honestly, while growing up, there wasn’t enough time to complain because it was just a way of life that we didn’t always have running water or electricity. It was my cousins and I who would run down to the lake, play, go boating and then come back home again packing our water for our family. We also spent our entire summers camping, cutting and gathering wood, hunting and storing food and berries for our long cold, dark winters. We helped our Grandparents take excellent care of our dog teams as they were the only chance for our survival in the winters on our trap line, and our summers were spent fishing, along with cleaning and smoking salmon in our villages.”

Growing up in The Yukon in Haines Junction, a small remote village (2 hours from the Alaskan Border) was challenging but Joe believes that “growing up there with my beautiful Dene people and my family taught me many valuable life lessons. These lessons included learning the importance of hard work, survival in the harshest of conditions and many traditional cultural values and beliefs.” Joe shares although her parents had difficult childhoods, I love and respect them dearly as they never had the same opportunities we have available to all of us today...her mother had been a survivor of residential school

When Joe ventured out on her own out of the Yukon down South to Alberta to pursue further educational and career opportunities, she believes that “it was through the love and nurturing of family” that gave her the courage to do what she is doing nowpursuing her dreams, and giving to the Aboriginal community not only in Alberta but still always maintains her

close ties to her roots back home in The Yukon as well. Leaving The Yukon for the city was a difficult transition for Joe. She relays how “I initially left for Alberta with nothing but the clothes on my back and my car and I told my family, I was only going to go for six months, and here I am, in Alberta fourteen years later. At first I had culture shock going from a small town to big city life and I felt a little fearful venturing out on my own but I persevered. I have made a wonderful, healthy life and I’ve stayed connected to family stay active in my community through volunteering and I still go back as often as I can to share all that I’ve learned so far on my journey. Education is important to Angeline Joe, and so is culture. Along her journey she has worked hard to become a ladies Fancy Powwow Dancer and she says “I feel I have been blessed with a wonderful, beautiful, extended Powwow family that extends from Alberta, across Canada and into the States. My beautiful Powwow teachers shared their gifts of nurturing, caring, guidance and dancing and have given me so many wonderful opportunities to compete and earn my way to share my love of Powwow through performances as a Spirit Eagle Dancer at the Calgary Stampede Grand Stand Show, a Multicultural Gala at the Epcor Theatre of Performing Arts and the Worlds Skills where we met the Honourable Prime Minister of Canada.” When asked how she felt about NEW TRIBE APRIL 2012

COMMUNITY education, Joe replied “education is very important for the youth of today. She relays that “In order for our youth to survive and thrive in today’s world, we need to do everything we can to encourage and help our youth to obtain a good education in order to allow them the same opportunities for learning, growing and developing their careers so they too can give back what they’ve learned to their people and their communities.” Joe’s educational career has involved numerous scholarships which include winning the: * Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth Scholarship (National 2002) * Eric Harvie New Sun Fund Native Memorial Scholarship (SAIT 2002) *Field of Study-ManagementChampagne/Aishihik First Nation ( 2002) *Highest Overall G.P.A.- Champagne/ Aishihik First Nation *Academic Achievement Scholarship from Indian and Northern Affairs (2001)

While also concurrently earning a Diploma in Accelerated Accounting at (SAIT) Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Business Administration-Accounting, and further utilizing her SAIT Diploma to apply to the University of Lethbridge where she was given advanced 3rd year standing in their Post-Diploma Business Management Degree Program. She attends evenings and weekends at the University while also working full time as the Casino Accountant at Grey Eagle Casino. Education to Joe means multiple things to her. While she believes “Learning comes in many forms to us…education, career, culture” it is her education and upbringing that have given her a solid foundation, and the courage to pursue many exciting career venture opportunities. It is through her hard earned education that she has been given the ability to work for some of the largest wellknown organizations in Canada. These organizations included working at the Council of Yukon First Nations in Accounting/Finance while in the Yukon, working for the Royal Bank of Canada as a Personal Financial Services Representative upon her move to Alberta, and then

competing nationally to become the Head of Trust Accounting for Indian Oil and Gas Canada. Through her education at SAIT, her previous work experience in finance at the Royal Bank of Canada and the Federal Government of Canada in Accounting as well as working toward her current Business Management Degree at the University of Lethbridge that gave her the knowledge, skills and courage to again compete nationally and become part of a new exciting business venture at Grey Eagle Casino where she has worked as Casino Accountant since they first opened going on 5 years strong this year. Joe’s current goals are to continue working towards her Business Management Degree at the University of Lethbridge (Calgary Campus) while also working as the Casino Accountant at Grey Eagle Casino with the hopes of one day working towards a position in Management. In closing, her one message to youth is if I can do it anyone can…“don’t be afraid to try and don’t be afraid to fail…the true fear should be in not trying at all…if you don’t try, you’ll never know and appreciate the rewards of true accomplishment.

My Guardian Angel Waits by the Door A story of Hope by Vincent E. Cardinal

My guardian Angel someone once said your guardian Angel waits for you by the gates when you’re in prison I’m prisoner I don’t really know its hard to comprehend that my guardian Angel is waiting foe me I thought they were supposed to protect us. Watch over us then again someone told me God is always with us everywhere now I know that is all true I got the non-believers telling me no there’s no such thing. People push, they fight, kill, steal, and lust there’s a lot of evil people a lot of dishonesty and the liars. Deceitful people I am use to there’s a lot of those people in my life they thought they were harming me yet they were teaching me. They taught me how to take defeat how to swallow my pride how to give in and how to give up. Now I know what not to do is listen to those people they belittled me they thought they were better than me why do all my stories end up like this? Maybe its these prison walls getting to me I’ve been in here for 77 days that’s is two months and 21 days or something like that I am not great at math. Every night and day a different pain a different struggle asking myself how to get through this day wondering what’s going on the out-side. Realizing this time drags on tic-tock is all I am thinking hopeless then I realize that this ain’t what it’s supposed to be. I am supposed to be in the fields, meadows, trees, hills, mountains, springs, lake waters, and the ocean. A Mother words can keep you strong a grandmothers love letting you hold on and then the sweet words from your children and their unfailing love for you. My so-called friends calls go away the feeling you felt fades away the missed times, missed days, and the missed years and one day you open your eyes and think where did it all go? But you realize that it was your family who felt the pain who struggled with worries and prayers for me. So I ask my guardian Angel to watch over them if my guardian Angel is waiting by the door then please watch my family my loved ones and my little one. My parents will also be there to help protect my family the thing I am suppose to be doing and that is being the protector of my family. I believe that God will watch over and protect me I pray that he takes care of my family. The life from inside and from a prisoner who believes that the time we’ve wasted is not really being wasted except moments with our loved ones or close friends. My family don’t forget that Jesus loves you the creator watches over you God sees our struggles hold on and be strong. We only got one life to live so take it as a learning experience and remember that our Guardian Angel will reunite with us when we leave this place. (Prison) When leaving this place remember to call your spirit to follow you home and remember if no one loves you our Lord Jesus Christ loves you be safe, take care, and hold on…………………………... Be strong and stay away from Prisons.

GOODBYE WINTER by Susan Gallaway

I spent the winter working at my auntÕ s diner serving lumberjacks and the few locals in a town of eighty-eight. Every day it was the “But Mom,” I said, “I have plans same people, eating the same food,

She never missed a day in the thirty years she owned DellaÕ s Diner. Well she missed one, when she slipped and fell. Ben, my aunt’s cook, kept the diner open that day by himself. I watched her in fascination, she did not gossip. She talked to them with interest. She would smile at them, flashing her even white teeth and dimples. I would bring Henry Wilcox his eggs over easy, with two pieces of my auntÕ s homemade sour dough bread, and potatoes without onions or gravy. Sarah Maye Farmer would have her usual the Lumberjack Stack, a slab of bacon and a pint of coffee to wash it all down. Old Hank would come in and sit at the counter, my aunt would hand me his usual oatmeal.

Turn up the Volume By Katty Jo Rabbit

Caveman Coco Beware Why does this album name seem so nostalgic, there is something strangely familiar about Coco Beware, maybe some of you cool cats who were avid fans of WWF will remember this was the name of a wrestler, who became a superstar, and who is now a name of the past, could this be a premonition? With lead vocals coming from Matthew Iwanusa, this five piece ensemble from Brooklyn has some mad skills they also have a bass player with some experience Jeff Berrall there is no pressure. A lot of the sound that is created is nice to listen too, its soft, melodic and really quite an easy album to receive. The concept on the other hand is a little confusing, with a name like Coco Beware, there is a general sense of curiosity with a warning, nowhere in the albums overall delivery is there a place where there is relevant to the name of the album. At times misleading, this album is a pretty general first foot forward, they don’t stand out, and they don’t blend in, they manage to stand alone even if it is not in the spot light. Some stellar standouts that create a good idea of what may come from this band are My room, Thankful and Decide.

Belle and Sebastian Late Night Tales Volume 2 Having being once compared to the Smiths it is now a little more obvious as to why that would happen, listening to this compilation of music reveals the jazzy, and poetic side of this particular sound. Hiding in the folds of obscurity this music is definitely a blended taste of wistful pop and real indie alternative. A musical taste for only the truly dedicated individuals, because a lot of the time it could get a little redundant. Part of the allure in this album is the fact that they have released 27 installments, and through it all have managed to keep this 70’s inspired theme incorporated into their sounds. They have also been able to keep it fresh, a lot of bands who have tried to own this style have failed horribly and managed to lose a lot of their fan base. With B&S they have only gotten stronger, reinforcing the fact that if you make good music no matter what the genre people will notice and keep it alive. And what better time to release this album but in the spring where a lot of the old becomes new again, if you are new to B&S definitely check out some of the older stuff and build your way up to this album you will be able to appreciate the music scene they have set out before us. With rare sampled beats, and psychedelic threads intertwined into the fabric this should appeal if you are a fan of the 70’s era rock.

Music You Can Feel In Your Toes The Hunger Games Songs from District 12 and beyond by Various Artists Not being a fan of the book series, or even really knowing the story line, this soundtrack was a little too country. Then after reading up on it, and finding out that the main character Katniss is from this mining town, it makes more sense. Though it was surprising to hear Kid Cudi, The Decembrists and Arcade Fire were all contributing artists. After the first listen, the whole entire mood was dark, lonely, and a little to stark, but imagine you have to fight to your death, so it was fitting, though at times a little boring. Almost like letting your granny listen to the radio and all it plays are those old songs from the thirtyÕ s with soulful despair ebbing at your heart and reminding you of the good ole days. LetÕ s hope the movie has a little more to offer which it most likely will. It was over heard that some of the viewers of the movie were so into it, that after the character Rue dies, and everyone stands up and holds up three fingers, there was some people in the theater that did this as well. Sounds like this album wonÕ t have any trouble appealing to the tweenÕ s of the world. With a track listing of 17 songs, you will definitely find something you will enjoy, as a whole album they seem to fall short of the mark, only because who wants to pump themselves up to go and kill other children while listing to Taylor Swift, too bad Kill Switch Engage, or 36 Crazy Fists didn’t get in on the action! But don’t worry you never know, because this is the one of three that is set to be released.

Madonna MDNA How is it that this 80 year old woman still remains in the spot light and has relevant music, shouldnÕ t she be knitting and enjoying her old age? Well looks like it is another round of withering on stage and kissing awards presenters for this woman. At least she has the money to tuck it in, and nip it up. As you guessed Madge is not going to give it up, she would rather parade around with a 20 year old guy and convince you and others that she still has what it takes. With her twelfth studio album, songs like Gang Bang, which seems to be something she knows a lot about, takes us to the club. Why is it that all these older woman just want to dance in the club? And on the speakers no less, (mom if your reading this don’t get any ideas) it just doesnÕ t sit well with the daughters of the world who have to endure this. But it seems that is how they express themselves, and there really is nothing wrong with that, only the music should have a warning on the label that reads: Warning may cause seizures or unwanted attention to the old lady dancing on the speakers. Joking aside this is a feat in itself, to be able to remain in the spot light after so much else, we must all bow down to the self claimed Queen of pop. It also must be pointed out that she has a huge following from the alternative crowd which most likely makes for album sales. So if youÕ re a fan donÕ t hold it against others if they donÕ t go out and buy up all the sequined hot pants they can. NEW TRIBE APRIL 2012

MOVIES

See You at the Movies Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth HereÕ s something to look forward to since everybody is talking about The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins’ first installation of the trilogy already coming to the big screen. The movie did a just portrayal of how violent and cruel The Games really are in the futuristic world of the country of Panem. A boy and girl pair between the ages of 12-18 is selected from each of the countryÕ s twelve districts to compete against each other in The Games. It is a case of children fighting and killing other children for the entertainment of the countryÕ s privileged people as it occurs as a reality show.

The Hunger Games

Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss, did well in rendering character development and showing that she values the survival of her family and herself the most. The comparison was well done between the surroundings of District 12 and the Capitol. The movie starts in an interesting way, and later the ending becomes more focused on how the games develop and there are cardboard characters whose roles are not given depth in the movie. There is an issue about the movie. It is rated PG-13 which is technically safe for children and young adults to watch, but the movie has some violent situations which are not really safe for young viewers. Starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum Head on for a hilarious ride with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street. Two policemen go undercover and observe a local high school. It is a story of friends helping each other out. Their assignment is to pose as high school students on 21 Jump Street where a new drug is being sold. Although their work turns up in progress, there are also some funny scenes in the movie. Some issues also are misleading because in one situation they throw a party and serve alcohol and drugs to under-aged partygoers.

Tatum is now into comedy and fits in very comfortably with his role. Hill is funny and witty. Some original members of the 80’s TV series make appearances for nostalgiaÕ s sake and lend a sincere take on the movie. There are also some insights on how the local police department works. Although there are portions where the story line becomes dry, it develops into an action movie. For some viewers, this makes for light viewing, and being a comedy-action film at that, viewers might be able to give a satisfactory rating. Tatum and Hill make a good cop duo and they get to help each other out as partners and as friends.

Starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins

John Carter

John Carter is a story about discovering that Barsoom (Mars) is being inhabited by tall barbarians and a princess in need of a hero. John Carter is a former military captain and becomes involved between parties of epic proportions. Taylor Kitsch plays John Carter and the movie provides an overview of a futuristic and exotic planet and the struggle of its inhabitants. Rated PG-13, some of its performances are not favorable among top critics. Its creatures appear to be a mess, and the origin and nature of the inhabitants of the planet seem to have been overlooked. It might be an ambitious film, but it has failed, only succeeding in pace and breadth of the story. There are some violent scenes which surprisingly passes the PG-13 rate. Many of its viewers say it is a disappointment and that it feels more like a rip-off and a violation of the original work (source: rottentomatoes.com). Some elements of romance and humor are lacking. It’s not missing but lacking, sometimes passing off as generic. In the end, it becomes too loaded with action, but its visual effects are also convincing. However, for creative credit, more work has to be done, with high expectations set for Stanton.

Starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly This is a psychological thriller and We Need to Talk About Kevin focuses on the relationship between mother and son. Here we are faced with the elements which make the viewer examine the makings of a murderer. The character sketch is on Eva and the family portrait that paints the situation. There are films that make the viewer think about plots and possibilities, and this one does it too.

We Need to Talk About Kevinr

The cinematic treatment is subtle but draws a punch and it stays true to the novelÕ s intentions and story. Although some of its events are juxtaposed and there lies the thin line between dream and reality. It is the mother who provides her version of the family portrait. If the film aims to provoke thoughts, it does the job. Certain scenes are painful to watch and it intends to make the viewer feel nauseated after a while. We Need to Talk About Kevin may have mixed comments and reactions from critics, but it is still a talked-about movie, and that’s what the film intends to do. NEW TRIBE APRIL 2012
