The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) states, “Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every year.” Not only will this preserve the health of those receiving the shot, but it will also prevent influenza from spreading to others. The fact remains that “the flu is five times more likely to cause severe illness in a pregnant woman than a woman who is not pregnant.” - Dr. Glade Curtis, author of Your Pregnancy, Week by Week. This stems, for some, due to safety concerns surrounding the fact that the flu vaccination contains certain toxins and preservatives. Experts have observed and noted that the manufacturing of the flu vaccination year after year could only create a stronger strain of the flu and, in turn, cause a widespread pandemic more devastating than what happened in 1918. Other experts in the fields have been watching scientists work on the flu vaccination year after year, as well, and are questioning whether or not they are focusing on the correct targets when formulating inoculations. Being True To Yourself

Life is not a smooth road, no matter how much we would like it to be. Learning to manage the ups and downs in life is something that we are all continuously trying to learn. Sometimes it is easy to go along with your life pretending that there is nothing bothering you. You smile; you laugh and joke around, yet on the inside you know that there is something that is nagging at you. As children, we may have been told that being strong is good, and that showing any insecurity or shedding any tears in front of people makes you weak. HANDMADE GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS The transition of seasons from autumn to winter bring with it the anticipation of the arrival of a very special holiday, a celebration that fills many adults and children alike with a sense of laughter and delight, filling them with feelings of satisfaction and contentment Christmas. Unfortunately, that’s how Christmas should be, but for many people, Christmas is one of the most stressful holidays of the year, specifically for those who are going through some troublesome and tough financial times. It may not be such a delightful experience after all for parents and guardians who happen to be struggling to make ends meet. For many, 18

Think about your basic and necessary materials. Each craft that you can find online, in a magazine, or in a craft book most likely requires varying materials. However, most crafts use an array of common and recurring basic materials, such as colored construction paper, markers, crayons, glue, and scissors. Most of these items are available at your local dollar store or discount outlet - which happens to be a great place for shopping on a low budget. Remember, it is the creativity of the project that counts, and not necessarily the quality of the materials used to make it.

Fortunately, cost-effective ways to create hand made gifts DO exist - you just have to plan it right. Often times, we tend to overlook items that we already own in our day-to-day lives - not because we don’t want to use them, but because we don’t always think to. If you know where to look, shopping for extra materials isn’t always something that you have to do, and you can save a lot of money by using as many scrap materials as possible. For example, say that you stumble upon a craft that requires some of those googly eyes that you saw earlier at the craft store - there are many cute, unique, and original items that will work as fine replacements. In this case, buttons could be used to make a great eye replacement, and the perfect buttons may just be hiding in the threads of that old sweater that you never wear anymore. Don’t feel bad about using scrap items, either - your little one will most likely love going on a hunt for spare household items and putting them to creative use.

Your children may come up with some amazing things - but deciding which crafts to work on together and discussing what will be used to make them ensures that materials will not be wasted, and this is important

Libraries are probably the best location that you can start. They are an invaluable way to obtain information on any given subject, and therefore, a great start for your search. Another convenient way to obtain information on holiday crafts is by using the internet to do a search. Even if internet service is not available in your household, the library also offers this, too, and using a library computer is a free service for anyone to use for any given amount of time. Making it through the holidays is possible, even when working with a budget. You just have to know in what places to be creative, in what places to be thrifty, and in what places to be resourceful. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel - and the holidays are no exception.

She says she likes a lot of things about being involved in boxing. ”Sparring is at the top of the list. I also love when we go on trips together out of the city. Sheena says of watching Alexis train, ”it’s an amazing feeling. She has such deadly look in her eyes when she’s workin the hand pads with coach John. She knows how to turn it on and turn it up when she sparring especially when they’re bigger than her or they’re boys. It brings some type of blessed feeling. I had no idea she’d fall in love with the sport the way she did. It’s brought a whole new meaning to “mother-daughter” time, especially when we get in the ring and spar each other.” Alexis says of following in her mom’s footsteps into the ring, ”some people think it’s very cool, others think it’s crazy and I shouldn’t do it. But that’s ok, I like it so I’m going to do it.” Sheena is definitely an ambassador for the sport. ”For any females who might be thinkin of training, DO IT! At least go give it try. Sometimes

the hardest part is the first day. But push all insecurities aside. Walk in with confidence and the desire to learn. Help the rest of us females prove that we belong there too.” With her amateur career winding down, Sheena says, ”I’m in process of reaching one goal I had for boxing; working towards my professional debut. After I sign that contract, I have a next goal in mind already, WORLD CHAMPION!” Boxing is not an inexpensive sport. In addition to training costs, Sheena says, “some of the bigger costs for being a boxer include boxing gear, like trunks, tops (for competing), boxing shoes, boxing gloves, and travel expenses. However we are very fortunate to have such a great gym that helps out a tremendous amount.” She also points out that she has a couple of sponsors, making sure to mention ”a huge thank you to Seraph Tattoos & Piercings in Lloydminister and AHRD Oil Field Services in Fishing Lake Métis Settlement for their continued sponsorship.” She’s quick to give credit where it is due. ”There’s no way I could be where I am in life as a mother, and as a boxer, if it weren’t for my family! I owe it all to them.” Sheena also has a 9 year old son Jarome. ”He’s not so much into boxing,” she says. ”He loves to come and support me and Alexis when we fight but other than that he stays clear of the boxing gym. He’s into taekwondo.” In addition to being a boxer,

Sheena’s also a member of ACTRA, the Canadian actors union. She’s an actor and voice actor, who contributes 3 voices in the Aboriginal cartoon, ”Raven Tales”. And she is hip hop artist Sheena Kaine. She’s on Instagram @STKAINE and says, ”I post motivational pics, videos, ideas for work outs at home, etc. I also have a page on Facebook ‘Sheena Kaine’ to help promote any upcoming fights I might have as well as some posts and info on my hip hop music.” She’s worked with Chris Copeland of Chay Originals in Calgary,AB , Edward Robinson of G.P.P Music in Virgina, VA as well as others. ”I post up past performances and future plans in regards to recording more music and performing more on stage.” She wants other single moms to know, ”When your babies or kids see you working hard an pushing to reach your goals, it inspires them. It motivates them to do better and be better and make smarter, healthier choices in their lives.” ”I know first hand that being a single mom can be tough,” she says. ”But don’t give up on your personal dreams.” She lives by that. Sheena plans to make her professional boxing debut in Calgary in January 2014, and no doubt Alexis will be cheering her on. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring Sheena Kaine as a professional boxer or if you want more details, please message slic@live.com

ALBERTA FOSTER CARE DEATHS Roughly 9 percent of Alberta foster children are Native Aboriginal, but they count for over 75 percent of the total deaths of foster care children in Alberta, Canada since 1999. Many have argued that the statistics may be a fluke, but there are some details which indicate that they may be due to external circumstances regarding the care Alberta Aboriginal children receive. Aboriginal children have a greater death rate if they are put into foster care on reserve. This statistic indicates the disparity that gives Aboriginal children who live off of the reserve more services and support. 26

NEW TRIBE DEC/JAN 2014

Roughly 145 children have died in foster care since early 2000. Of the 145 that have died, a staggering 74 are listed to be Aboriginal. There are some disparities with the statistics. Some of the children that died during the conducting of this study did have ethnic information provided. While many argue that this is a statistical fluke, many people who work in foster care place the blame on substandard housing situations and a lack of resources. Poverty and substance abuse are also believed to be a large factor in what has been responsible for the deaths of these children. These communities also have

a tendency to lack the required supports and services necessary to assist each child. A huge element of this situation is the funding disparity between on-reserve and off-reserve foster care agencies. Alberta’s on-reserve child welfare agencies began in the early 1970s. These agencies take care of children who live on the reserves. Children that live off of reserves are taken care of the family services agencies that are funded by the province. The Canadian government initially believed that delegating the responsibilities of taking

COMMUNITY care of these children to agencies on reserve would tailor the programs to mirror Aboriginal culture and put the children more at ease. In 2002, a child care agency was suspended after a string of deaths occurred. Understaffed agencies with huge caseloads of foster care children may have been too blame. It’s also believed that large amounts of funding during this time may have been spent in poor ways.

It is based on the premise that only six percent of children on Aboriginal reserves will need foster care. In reality, the number is actually much higher. This may be what causes the lack of resources to be passed around, including quality human resources. The actual rate of children who require foster care has fluctuated between thirteen and twenty percent.

In recent years, the Canadian government has rolled out a different funding formula for providing care to these children, but many argue that it hasn’t been enough. Many of these foster care deaths are related to policies being breached. The way that the foster care system investigates and reports its deaths requires a change to the overall infrastructure of the Alberta There have been many foster care system. complaints about the lack of funding given to these agencies Lack of funding for foster in recent years. resulted in many deaths to be reported as natural causes. In reality, these deaths need to be reviewed independently to find out the real answers so that solutions can be implemented. There is still no clear cut answer to what is causing the deaths of these foster care children. The particularly high number of Aborigine deaths may attribute the problem to a lack of funding. A drastic overhaul to the Canadian foster care system may be the best way to determine where the largest holes in the foster care system are. While poverty is a huge factor in these foster care deaths, there may need to be stricter training protocols for the care workers that take care of the children. Some argue that foster care often goes to abandoned Aboriginal children who may have serious birth defects. These defects may result in negligence by the agencies that need to find stronger mental health care professionals to take care of the children. The overall biggest proponent is likely never to be known unless a independent review is conducted on the deaths of these children.

Turn up the Volume By Katty Jo Rabbit

The Hunger Games Catching Fire Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

With 13 tracks to offer listening to this album made it easier to imagine being in District 12, the first album was good, but this one is even better. It captures the ideals behind the movie and the social commentary of living in a society that seems to feed off of others drama. Could you imagine having to work yourself up to stab someone? Anyways morbid thoughts aside, the movie itself is said to be one of the greatest sequels of all time, which I think speaks volumes and it is most likely why you see a lot of heavy hitters come to the reaping to make their contribution. With big name bands and singers like Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Christina Aguilera, and Sia there is a lot to offer for the mainstream. With your more alternative bands like Of Monsters and Men and Lorde, who does a perfectly fitting cover of the Tears for Fears song: Everybody wants to rule the world; which actually got approval from Curt Smith who is the lead singer in Tears for fears in an MTV interview. Helps to attract other listeners that would normally not bother, this kids is marketing at its finest. So if youÕ re a super fangirl and or fanboy of the books, the movies and Jlaw then you for sure want to check this out, it would make a good stocking stuffer anyways. The only let down is that there wasnÕ t a track offered by Lenny Kravits, I think Fly would have been a good throw back but since it is about futuristic society it would have been nice to hear some new stuff from Lenny. Just saying. Dam Funk & Snoopzilla 7 Days of Funk From Snoop dog to Snoop Lion to Snoopzilla, no matter what he calls himself he is still one of the best and will always be a rap legend. For those of you that donÕ t know, Snoop is actually making tribute to Bootsy Collins, who also called himself Bootzilla. Although labeled a funk album this seven-track record is really just a side project that sounds terrific, especially if you enjoy that puff-puff-pass style that Dam Funk and Snoop are notoriously known for. Produced by Stone Throw records, this is said to be a big move for the independent label as it will definitely gain some cred if the album does well. This will most likely happen since there are a lot of cats down with Snoopzilla. With the feature on funk and how it has inspired a lot of hip-hop, it feels like a breakdown of roots where Snoopzilla is channeling his old school influence and making it more polished. With his ability to channel Reggae, hip-hop and the West Coast style that is always oh-so-fly, you know that this collaboration is just one of many to come. On the flip side Dam Funk keeps it real by throwing in the R&B while the hip hop lyrics keep the flow slick. Check out the track Hit da pavement. This just proves that if you know what works and you have a partner in crime who you gel with, why mess with a good thing. Better to just go with it, until it burns out and is Faden Away.

Music You Can Feel In Your Toes Leona Lewis Christmas, with Love This is definitely a formulated x-mas album where soft heart-felt, soul searching ballads and loved by the spirit of Christmas melodies are the focus. With classic songs like: White Christmas, Silent Night, Ava Maria and O holy night, you know what youÕ re getting into. So donÕ t be disappointed when you donÕ t hear any dance club Christmas songs because this X-Factor winner is not taking it there. Which is understandable, with all the success of her past two albums this UK singer is going to need the baby Jesus on her side to make a strong comeback and what better way to do that then with a Christmas album? Mariah Carey did it, letÕ s just hope that she keeps it respectful and not so sexy-Santa-suit like Mrs. Carey-Carter did, because letÕ s face it, there is nothing sexy about Santa hats. One redeeming factor is Leona actually writes and sings three original songs on this album, a little gift to her hardcore fans. On a side note of interest, while making the album she actually played the movie Labyrinth that stars David Bowie as the goblin king for inspiration. (Her cool factor just went up in my books) So for those of you with the Auntie who has everything Christmas from the little Christmas light earrings, to the ugly Christmas sweater; you can definitely put this on the list of possible cheesy X-mas additions to add to her collection. Deathmetal Christmas Hellish Renditions of Christmas Classics All metal heads rejoice, you wonÕ t have to suffer through another Ann Murray sings the best of Christmas classics. Instead you can head-bang your way through the season with this five song track of some of the darkest Christmas hymns that are out there. Wait until you hear the rendition of the Nutcracker: Dance of the sugar plum fairy. With guttural thrashings, amazing guitar solos and sick blast beats this album would make any thrasher Christmas party host proud to present. Although a little short with the songs, it could be a lot longer as O silent night, could definitely be remade into a death metal Christmas song. It has all the elements, spooky chorus, dark under lying theme, but it didnÕ t make the cut. So hopefully they meaning the bassist for Hate EternalÕ s J.J Hrubovcak and the boys take heed of the situation and make a part two. Being a Christmas album you would think it would be a cheesy rendition of songs that appeal to the general public, everything being all “holy baby Jesus” but it is actually a really good death metal album first, then a Christmas cd. I really like the different elements that come through, because unlike the rest of the masses in church there has always a fear of death and burning for eternity; which I feel lingers in the sub text of the bible. The duality of the music and the message of the hymns really work with each other to make for a devil-horn saluting, head-bowed to the lord, thrashing good time! NEW TRIBE DEC/JAN 2014

See You at the Movies

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire takes us back to the world of Panem and the Katniss Everdeen. In the first film, Katniss and her partner/love interest Peeta broke major ground. They became the first-ever players in the history of the tournament to break all the rules and rise up and become the victors. Now she and her partner live in the Dystopian District. All seems well for her and her friends. However, President Snow has not forgotten the tournament, or what has happened. He has not forgotten that Katniss and Peeta openly defied the rules. It’s under the advisement of the new game master that President Snow hatches a plan. He intends to use their win as propaganda, all the while discrediting the two of them at the same time. His plan is to take the 75th anniversary of the Hunger Games and destroy the two lovers, as well as others who could potentially stand in the way. The first Hunger Games was inspired by the Suzanne Collins’ novel. In many places it seemed a bit flawed and the direction seemed a bit ill-contrived. But with the switch of directors and a bigger budget, Catching Fire seems to make up for where the first film lacked. Looking at the set design and the cinematography, the second film seems to be more balanced than the first one did. The director brought a better game plan to Catching Fire than what was in the first one. Michael Arndt and Simon Beaufoy stepped up their game. Bringing in these two heavy weights to attend to the script was a major benefit, a benefit the first film didn’t have. Their writing helped to get to the heart of the story. It wasn’t simply about the survival techniques that the first film had, though that is important too. Katniss is not only aware of her own survival, but the world around her as well. There is more wit and charm with the second one. We also get added scenes in the movie, scenes that the book never gave us. The only downside is that the death scenes weren’t as sustainable as in the first, creating sometimes a long and drawn-out storyline. Overall, Catching Fire sets up the plotline for the two-part final very nicely. It becomes less about video and more about the character and the political thread.

See You at the Movies Starring Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel

DisneyÕ s reputation has been at stake for the past decade or so. ItÕ s been long-questioned whether Disney can fare up against companies such as Pixar, DreamWorks and Blue Sky. Disney is the founding father, the one who created all of this, and now some are wondering if it can even hold itÕ s own weight anymore. The hope is that DisneyÕ s Frozen will beat the odds and help maintain that legacy. Looking at the film though, I would have to say that itÕ s close to being at the top. the acting is wonderful, as well as the animation. Not to mention that itÕ s surprisingly feminine. We havenÕ t seen something like this in a long time. The story itself is very small. It gravitates to these two Princess sisters, young Anna and older sister Elsa. The older one is about to be crowned the Queen. ItÕ s a pure princess story, told with strong conviction and no mockery in the story at all. It doesn’t poke fun at the Love-at-first-sight idea;nor does it sidestep the issue that you can find true love in other forms, not just in a fairy-tale. All of the characters are genuine and charming. There is also a surprising lack of evil in this movie. Elsa may be seen as the bad guy by some, but she is simply choosing to hide herself away from the world. She has used her powers in a dark way and in an unjustifiable fit of rage. After doing this, she chooses to lock herself away. The only evil in the movie comes from the Snow Queen. When comparing Elsa and the Queen together, you genuinely feel sympathy for Elsa. The subtext of the film is a girl being told to hide away what makes her special. She is told to do this, even by those who claim to love her. This storyline is seen quite widely with homosexuality and how women are constantly punished for not conforming, so the stark commonalities reside with the overall tone of the movie. At the core is the relationship of Elsa and Anna. As they go through periods of questionable parenting, selfdoubt and fear. Frozen pushes the fairy-tale storyline forward, instead of staying stuck in the past. This film, overall, proves that Disney is still a company to be reckoned with. Through this film Disney comes to terms with itÕ s own legacy and itÕ s voice. NEW TRIBE DEC/JAN 2014

Book Reviews For the restless mind

The Elf on the Shelf by Carol Aebersold, Chanda Bell The elf on the shelf - a Christmas tradition is a delightful children’s book by author Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chandra Bell. Coe Steinwart beautifully illustrated it. The book was self published in 2005 by Carol Aebersold. It is a Christmas tale about how Santa sends a little scout elf to a family with little children the day after Thanksgiving. When the family adopts the elf and gives him a name he gets Christmas magic allowing him to sit silently watching and listening all day. When everyone is asleep, the elf will fly back to the North Pole to tell Santa Claus everything that happened during the day. He tells Santa if the kids were naughty or nice and details what they did all day. This book helps explains how Santa can keep track of all those children. Each morning the elf always appears in a different place so the children have to look for him. The rule is that no one can touch the elf or he will lose his magic powers. His job is just to sit, watch and listen. He cannot move or speak when anyone in the house is awake. His job is to keep Santa informed about the behavior of the children in his care. The elf remains in the house to watch over the children until Christmas Eve. That is when he flies back to the North Pole until the next year. The book written in rhyme explains how Santa keeps track of the entire how well the children behave. This is a wonderful picture book for children from two to 8 years old. It is a great Christmas tradition idea. The hardcover book usually comes with a little North Pole scout elf and a little keepsake box used to store the elf until the next year. Children love the idea of adopting their own personal scout elf to watch over them at Christmas time. They love waking up every morning and looking for the elf is new hiding place. A family tradition started in the author’s family in the 1970s. The family had an elf from sent from Santa to watch their behavior from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve. This was the inspiration for the book Elf on the Shelf The book has become very popular and has won numerous awards. The book has become so popular that the Elf on the Shelf got a spot in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2012.

Book Reviews For the restless mind

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb I AM MALALA is the astonishing story of a family in the middle of a terror campaign in the Swait Valley. It is the story of a girl named Malala and her battle for girls’ education. It is an autobiography written by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb, a multiple foreign Correspondents award winner. Little Brown and Company published the book October 8, 2013. It has 352 pages. Malala lived with her parents, two brothers, and two pet chickens. Her father was Ziauddin Yousafzai, a poet, school owner, and involved in building and coordinating the resistance in further, higher and adult education... He ran a chain of schools known as the Khushal Public School. Malala attended school but got most of her education came from her father. He encouraged her to write and go to school. In 2009, when Malala was 10 years old, she wrote a blog under a fictitious name for the BBC describing in detail her life under Taliban rule and the ways they were trying to take control of the place she lived in, She also affirmed her outlook on encouraging education for girls. In late 2008, the BBC Urdu website set out to find a pupil to blog anonymously about her life there. They went to Ziauddin Yousafzai for advice. When they could not find any students willing to do it because it was too dangerous, Yousafzai recommended his daughter Malala, She was eleven years old and and in seventh grade at the time. The BBC agreed but insisted on her using a phony name. Her first blog entry was her thoughts as the first battle of Swait was taking place outside. In later posts, she wrote about how her school closed and the Taliban made it a law that girls could not attend school. The blog posts that follow give a fascinating look at how an ordinary family lives under the Taliban. The next year a New York Times documentary filmed about her life as the Pakistani forces intrude in the region leading to the end of the Second battle of Swait. Following the film Malala increased in notoriety, granting interviews and turning up on television. The Taliban were truly taking notice now. October 9, 2012, Taliban gunmen shot Malala in the head and neck in an assassination attempt. This happened when she was coming home on a school bus. Gunmen entered the bus demanding, “Who is Malala?” Then they shot her directly in the head. After a miraculous recovery, Malala goes from the remote village in Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. She has become a symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest person ever nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. NEW TRIBE DEC/JAN 2014
