Cubs Collect Coupons To Help Military Families Overseas

By Catherine Bialkowski iger Den 1 of the Cub Scouts of Chester is participating in a “Troopons”- coupons for troops- drive throughout the month of April. The collection of manufacturer’s coupons is bene-

ficial to the military troops and their families, and can make a huge difference in life overseas. The prices of food, clothing and other goods are inflated in other countries such as England where, off-base, a dollar is worth 66 cents.

“This is an easy drive for younger participants,” said Sara Lohrmann, Tiger CoDen leader. “It provides instant gratification for them.” Kids and adults alike can easily take part in this donation drive. The Scouts are collecting individual printed coupons for items in the categories of food, baby supplies and common household goods, cut-out individually and separated into small sandwich bags. They are not collecting coupons for specific stores, vouchers, restaurant coupons, food stamps or internet coupons. They will, however, accept expired coupons, as long as they have not been expired two months past the pick-up month of April. The coupons to be donated should be packaged into the sandwich bags and labeled with their respective category “food,” “baby,” “non-food.” Participants should write the approximate value of the coupons on the outside of the bag. If

a coupon does not have this information, estimation is acceptable. “It’s been going really well so far,” Lorhmaan said of the Troopons drive. “Any little part people can do to help out the soldiers and to do community service is greatly appreciated.” Lohrmann says this drive has been perfect for her troop because of its simplicity.

“I’ve been looking at some fundraising ideas that our younger scouts can participate in,” she said. “This is great for the Tigerssomething they can easily get their hands on.” Donation boxes for the month of April, through the 28th, are located at the children’s room in Chester Library, outside the office at Bragg School on Route 24 and at the front entrance of

Black River Middle School. A recent Scientific Survey showed that more than 60 percent of the military families served by the program use Troopons several times a month, and that 33 percent said they use it weekly. These families can use the money they save with the coupons to send their children to college, pay bills and more. Every donation makes a difference.

Long Valley Thrift Boutique... continued from page 2 2015, the store hasn’t seen a huge shopper turnout, despite the impressive selection. Barron said a handful of repeat customers sing the shop’s praises and many have worn RACKS items to the office, graduations, holiday events and even to weddings and formals. Overall, though, shopper turnout has been lower than expected, so the group is trying to spread the word, and is offering the $5 deal, which applies to every item in the store. “We just want more people to stop in and see for themselves all the great items we have here,’’ Barron said. “If our hours aren’t convenient, we’ll schedule a time for a private shopping session.’’

Despite the slow shopper turnout, RACKS has been a boon to the community. The club has donated 75 coats to the Morris County Foster Parent Association. Additionally, 40 suits were donated to Dress For Success Morris County, a charity that strives to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing them with support and professional attire. The club has also been a valuable resource to area families who were displaced by fire or floods in recent months. Families were invited to shop for free in the boutique. The shop stocks only the finest quality clothing donated. Clothing that isn’t deemed RACKS-worthy is donated to the nonprofit

Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Junior Women’s Club is 60 members strong and has historically supported the community through its contributions to the police department, the town’s first aide squads, the library and its volunteer fire department. Battered women’s shelters, local food pantries, cancer research organizations, recreational programs and elementary school programs have also benefitted from the club’s past fund-raising efforts. The store is open Tues., Wed., Fri. and Sat. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Thurs. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Check the Junior Women’s Club’s Facebook page at www. facebook.com/racksthritboutique to confirm hours. For more information, or to

schedule a private shopping session for a group, email Barron at bmkpc2@yahoo. com. Recently, the club set up a large, white donation bin in the parking lot behind

A

the store. Anyone wishing to donate clothing or accessories may now do so at any time of day or night. Donors get a tax deduction for making a charitable contribution and receipts

will be given if needed, Barron said. More information about the club and the store is available on the club’s website, www.lvjuniors.org.

T

he Art of Dance Studio in Chester is proud to congratulate six of their teen dancers on their professional performance in The Delbarton Mothers Guild Annual Fashion Show and Gala. With exceptional dance training and versatility in dance styles, they put on a spectacular show as they opened the “Alice in Wonderland” themed event as dancing Alice’s! The dancers were a welcome opening number and were enthusiastically received as part of Delbarton’s fantastic fashion show. As members of the Performing Company, the six dancers have been students at the Art of Dance for in some instances up to 15 years! They dance up to 5 days a week and have proven to be dedicated dancers with wonderful performing quality. The Art of Dance Performing Company consists of 50 dancers ranging in ages from six to seventeen years old. They study all styles of dance, including tap, ballet, jazz, and hip-hop. The Art of Dance Performing Company has won many high awards throughout this dance season, including the Critic’s Choice Award at the prestigious New York City Dance Alliance competition, (the highest honor that they give). They have also won the Class Act Award for age-appropriate choreography, costume and presentation. Studio director Valerie Harman says, “We are so proud of these dancers that have followed their passion for dance and performing. All our dancers work so hard, and we are

It’s Happening At the Art of Dance!

so proud of each and every one of them.” This summer the Art of Dance will be offering exciting dance classes, camps and Intensives for all ages and levels of ability from beginner to pre-professional. Children’s themed (Princess, Trolls and Frozen) camps will be a blast with dance, crafts and more for 3-6 yrs. New this year is Princess in Training camp for 2 1/2-3yrs because it’s never too early to start dancing. Weekly fun in tap, ballet, hip hop, theater and Weekly fun in tap, ballet, hip hop, theater and Irish camps are available for dancers who want to immerse themselves and focus on a particular style with a show at the end of the week. Our renowned Dance Intensives for intermediate and advanced dancers age 7 through 19, features faculty from Broadway, American Ballet Theater, So You Think You Can Dance, and the Rockettes. There is no need to travel to NYC to get great training, this amazing faculty comes to the Art of Dance to share their knowledge and training with young aspiring dancers! The Art of Dance also offers the very popular, boys only classes starting at age 5 in tap & hip hop and has male teachers on their yearly faculty to be role models for the boys. Ms. Harman says, “We offer a Men’s class because it is important that boys dance like boys. At our Summer Intensive we bring in a lot of male teachers like Mike Cusamano who has been in several Broadway shows. The Art of Dance provides an environment to foster

that passion. The phenomenal Master Teacher Kat Wildish and the highly acclaimed Kenny Easter from the American Ballet Theater will again be teaching an unforgettable Ballet Dance Intensive. Open to all ballet students throughout the area, this is an incredible week of technique, variations, partnering and fun. The dancers will learn excerpts from Sleeping Beauty with a performance at the end of the week, with costumes! To give back to the community and show our appreciation to our wonderful customers, everyone is invited to the Art of Dance’s 1st Annual Open House/Friends and Family Picnic, on Sat. May 20 1p.m.-4p.m. The rain date is Sun., May 21. Families and friends can expect to take part in free dance classes for all ages, a special Open Floor event, allowing all performers to sign up to take the stage and perform songs or dances to the crowd! There will also be a demonstration by the Chester Karate Academy. Hot dogs, raffles prizes and discounts on all Summer Classes and Camps will be offered! With excellent dance training and a supportive community, this local dance studio will continue to produce the stars of tomorrow. Adjacent to the dance studio is the phenomenal dance boutique, the Essential Dance Shop. It is a one-stop shop for all of your dance needs. Whether it be an appointment for a pointe shoe fitting, or clothing, gifts and accessories, you will not find a more

convenient, welcoming and family oriented place for you and your children. To see all of the Art of Dance great dancers, come see the Dessert and Dance performance on May 5 starting at 6:30 p.m. or

Dental Implants, Insurance And Payment

arely do patients come to me in need of dental implants without questions about costs, insurance, and payments. This issue of Dental Digest will hopefully shed some light on these issues. Insurance: • Dental insurance does not behave like medical insurance. Dental insurance has a maximum, meaning once your insurance company pays out that amount, they will not pay any more for that benefit period, typically a calendar year. Therefore, if your plan’s maximum is $1,500 and your expected treatment is $5,000, your responsibility will be $3,500. • Implant coverage: We are finding more and more policies cover den-

tal implants, but this is a very broad and general statement. When someone undergoes dental implant treatment, there are multiple services that are performed. Coverage for each service is what you need to know. Examples of these services may include: the implant itself, an abutment, a crown, extractions, and grafting. Also, remember the point made above: once the maximum is reached, the insurance company will not pay out any additional funds. • Pre-determinations: When you ask your dentist to find out what your plan covers, you are asking for a pre-determination. However, these documents serve very little purpose, except to find out if a procedure is covered under your plan. IT

OPEN HOUSE

SUNDAY JUNE 4 1pm-3pm

IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF PAYMENT! Just because the document states it is a covered procedure does not mean that it will be paid. There are MANY limitations and exclusions that apply. BEWARE! Investment: • Dental implants should be thought of as an investment, not an expense. You are investing your time and financial resources into your health. Understanding this concept will help you get away from the restrictive nature of insurance and guide you towards other methods of affording dental implants. Payment: In my practice, we perform many dental implant procedures for our patients and the patients of other

dentists. We recognize the financial needs of people, and we offer many opportunities for people to be able to afford the treatments they need and desire: • Cash & Check Discounts: Many people have the funds for the services they are requesting, but like all smart consumers, they look for discounts. We will offer those discounts for payments made my cash & check. • Home Equity Lines Of Credit: If you own your own home, and with interest rates so low, this is the cheapest money you can borrow. You pay yourself back as you see fit, with no (to little) penalties. • Healthcare Financing Companies: There are multiple companies that will

lend money for your healthcare needs. Some examples are CareCredit, Lending Club, and Health Credit Services. Plans offered by these companies range from interest-free loans to extended loans at higher interest rates. In summary, whether your needs are a single implant or complex care such as All-On-Four®, insurance, financing, and your thought process are all important considerations. We help our patients every day with these considerations here at Morris County Dental Associates. About the author: Dr. Ira Goldberg has been performing implant procedures for 22 years, and is recognized as an expert

Middle School Students Create And Donate Mobile S.T.E.M. Carts To Local Hospitals

STEM 4 THEM” Service Project won first place at Destination Imagination NJ State Finals. Team Entourage, a seventh grade Destination Imagination team from Black River Middle School in Chester, is proud to donate its first STEM 4 THEM mobile cart to Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, with more cart donations to follow. Eight months in the making, STEM 4 THEM is an award-winning community service project created by seven Black River Middle School students as part of an educational challenge through Destination Imagination to identify and solve a community need. At Black River Middle School, STEM is a popu-

lar course taught by Andrew Gray. His course inspired the team to develop their service project idea. They asked themselves, “Who could benefit from STEM?” “How can STEM make an impact?” Recalling times when they themselves were stuck at home and sick in bed, the team hatched the idea that STEM would be a great activity, 4 THEM, kids going through an extended hospital stay. “We knew how much we loved working a STEM project, and wanted to share it with other kids,” says Entourage, which includes Scarlet Kitts, Sean Smith, Daniel and Michael Catrambone, Caitlin Joyce, Genna Smith, and Drew Cembrinski.

Over the winter, Entourage organized crowd funding and social media campaigns and collected material donations through school. They even went door-to-door in downtown Chester seeking community partners to help their cause. With more than $1,300 raised and boxes of donated supplies, the team researched STEM projects and purchased colorful carts, STEM books and stocked the carts with supplies for hundreds of projects and science experiments like slime, putty and lava lamps. They also added inspirational quotes and a creativity journal for patients to write about their projects and pass along tips for others to read.

The first STEM 4 THEM cart was donated to Goryeb Children’s Hospital, where it has made an

impact and put a smile on many a child’s face! Children’s Specialize Hospital in Mountainside is the next

recipient. With more fundraising, Entourage aims to expand STEM 4 THEM throughout New Jersey.

weeks ago and is currently taking reservations for clients to try. “I thought it would fit nicely in the area,” says Tylee. “It’s a new technology in the fitness and wellness industry; no one else in the Chester area that has one. It’s a good service to offer my members and people who live in the Chester areas. I’m on the cutting edge.” Stemming from the Greek work “Cryo,” which means cold, Whole Body Cryotherapy was originally developed in Japan to treat pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, as described on the NitroFlex website. During the past two decades, WBC was researched and refined in Europe and is used by sports, health and spa professionals

in the U.S. for muscle recovery, inflammation reduction, pain management and skin care. Tylee noted how “all of the NFL football players, especially, use WBC to help

heal their injuries as well as baseball and hockey teams, Mixed Martial Arts and fighters. “Over a series of treatments, maybe three or four,” continued on page 22

Page 22 • April 2017 • Tell Them You Saw It In The Black River News • Like us on facebook www.facebook.com/mypaperonline.com Local Gym... continued from page 21 certain problem conditions “goes away,” says Tylee. A three minute process, clients step in a chamber known as a cryosauna, “which uses gasiform nitrogen to rapidly lower the skin surface temperature to about 32°F.” The cryosauna temperature ranges between negative 238 degrees to negative 274 degrees. “The brain reacts to the skin sensors by stimulating the regulatory functions of the body and releasing anti-inflammatory proteins and endorphins into the bloodstream,” the website describes. Different from an ice bath, WBC provides extreme, dry cold that reaches just the top skin layers and cold receptors causing the brain to restrict blood flow

to an internal cycle. The three minute process deals with “any injury, muscle soreness,” says Tylee, “gets rid of any issues.” It can even repair tissue and help with the healing process with those who had surgery, he adds. Some choose to use the WBC for weight loss as “you can burn 500 to 800 calories per session,” says Tylee. “A lot of Hollywood people are using it for weight loss” as some would think it is “much better than going on a treadmill for an hour.” Calories are lost as the “body is fighting to keep itself warm so it’s burning those calories,” he says. WBC also helps those with arthritis, chronic pain, skin conditions, stress, depression and improves sleep, says Tylee.

The cryosauna is available to members and non-members by appointment. To reserve, visit the gym or sign up at nitroflex. com. Tylee has so far invited his staff and trainers to use the crysauna, and even over-trained himself for two weeks to test the results. “I trained my upper body really hard,” he says. “On Sunday morning I was really sore. I went in on Monday that helped me a lot.” When he went in again on Tuesday, he says there was “no more soreness.” He was planning on experimenting with his legs next. To prevent frostbite, users of the sauna are provided with protective clothing including thermal dry socks and slip-on sandals for their feet as well as thermal

hen it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection. Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay, such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma,

California. Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easy-drinking red varietal.

arm, hearty meals, including stews, casseroles, soups, and chilis, make for great comfort foods when temperatures drop. Another advantage to these types of meals is they can easily be expanded to serve extended family. Also, when prepared using a slow cooker, these meals can be easily transported to a friends’ potluck or relative’s home. Beloved for their turnit-on-and-forget-it convenience, slow cookers allow cooks to start meals in the morning and then return home at night and have dinner ready and waiting. The True Fountain Of Youth, Telomeres, The Key To Longevity, Increase With A Plant Centered Diet

he global anti-aging market will be worth nearly $200 billion by 2019. An aging population and new beauty technologies, many of which don’t work, make anti-aging products big business! Did you know there is an anti-aging treatment for the health of our body, and not just for the surface of our skin? Yes, there is a way to fight not only wrinkles but also biological aging leading to disease and death. Research about the molecular pathways underlying cellular aging and how the foods we eat affect these pathways to slow down or

L

cell death. Each time the cell divides, the telomeres on the end of each chromosome get shorter. Studies have shown that people with long telomeres live longer and healthier lives than people with short telomeres. The telomerase keeps the chromosomes from “Fraying.” Telomerase is an enzyme that rebuilds telomeres and keeps DNA from Fraying. In 2009, Elizabeth Blackburn, a scientist, was awarded the Nobel Prize for her discovery of telomerase, found in the roots of bristlecone pines, but also in humans.

So How Can we Increase Telomerase and Protect Telomeres? Many studies have connected plant food to longer telomeres and higher telomerase activity. A study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, showed data from 3,660 U.S. adults and looked at diets rich in carotenoids and telomere length. They study found that a carotenoid-rich diet, that is a diet high in brightly colored fruits and vegetables was linked to longer telomeres. Dr. Dean Ornish, in 2008, teamed with Blackburn and found that eating

a plant based diet in just 3 months significantly boosted telomerase activity. In 2013, Ornish and Blackburn did a follow- up study which was published in the Lancet Oncology which showed that telomeres increased over the course of 5 years by 10% when participants ate a plant-based diet. The control group in the same study, which ate the standard American diet (SAD), not only did their telomeres not grow, but rather they shrunk by 3%. A plant-based diet is high in antioxidants that can both fight the oxidative stress responsible for telomere

shrinking while preventing and even reversing cellular aging. Medical, cosmetic, and technological advances have allowed people today to look younger and possibly live longer, but at what cost. Most people are not living better, they’re just dying longer! To that end, plant foods are the best answer yet. Although this article is not about Acupuncture, it is about living a longer healthier life and for that reason and the science to back this up, I wanted to share this important news!

Life Expectancy Across The Globe

ife expectancy is defined as the average number of years a person in a specific country or region is predicted to live if mortality rates were to remain steady in the future. Factors that can impact life expectancy include the

speed up the clock. We do have an anti-aging secret, one that can keep us young inside and out, and it’s the best-kept one to date. TELOMERES, a Key Part of the Aging Process Telomeres protect our DNA by acting s buffers at the ends of our chromosomes. A good analogy is they are like the small plastic sleeve at the end of shoelaces to keep the shoelace from fraying. Instead of protecting shoelaces, telomeres prevent our DNA from fraying, and over-replication. The average cell divides between 50-70 times before

availability of healthcare in a given nation, genetics, infectious diseases present, and even political unrest. The average life expectancy has grown in most developed nations over the last couple of centuries. In the 1800s, infant mortality

drove down life expectancy numbers. However, many people still reached nearly 60 years of age. More than 200 years later, many people now live well into their 80s. According to the World Health Organization, 71.4

years was the average life expectancy at birth of the global population in 2015. The organization routinely analyzes health and longevity trends around the world, and many nations boast impressive life expectancies from birth. Countries that

have some of the highest life expectancies include but are not limited to the following (numbers indicate life expectancies as of 2015): • Australia: 82.8 • Austria: 81.5 • Belgium: 81.8 • Canada: 82.2 • Chile: 80.5 • Cyprus: 80.8 • Denmark: 80.6 • Finland: 81.1 • France: 82.4 • Germany: 81 • Greece: 81 • Iceland: 82.7 • Ireland: 81.4 • Israel: 82.5 • Italy: 82.7 • Japan: 83.7 • Luxembourg: 82 • Singapore: 83.1

• Switzerland: 83.4 • United Kingdom: 81.2 • United States of America: 79.3 Certain nations in Africa, including Chad and Nigeria, have low life expectancies, with ages in the mid-50s. Healthy eating, routine medical visits and exercise can increase life expectancy. Access to medications that treat chronic illnesses can also increase life expectancy and improve quality of life. Reducing risk factors for illness, including quitting smoking, avoiding illegal drugs and moderating alcohol consumption, also can increase life expectancy.

ashington Twp. Mayor Kenneth W. Roehrich presented a proclamation affirming April 2017 as Child Abuse Prevention Month to Pat Reidy Fontana, who serves as the state project chair for the initiative focusing on child abuse prevention. This cause, selected through a process initiated by the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, will be ongoing for two years. The program, promoted as Awareness of Child Abuse in New Jersey, will focus on programming that includes positive childhood experiences, quality parenting and healthy child development. Plans include pub-

lic awareness campaigns, parenting education programs, workshops and professional training that promote parental involvement in children’s education and the essential role parents have to nurture, develop and sustain healthy children in safe environments. The Long Valley Woman’s Club will support the

Child Abuse Prevention program through its programs which will include a speaker in the fall. Over the last several years, the Club has supported other State Project causes, including Autism Awareness, NAMI (National Awareness of Mental Illness) and Homeless Shelters.
