By Megan Roche or 17-year-old Brennan Horn, the importance of service and sacrifice is something he’s always felt the need to do. When he spent his youth in Arkansas, his family was constantly contacted by teachers and community members to help fill needs of the less fortunate. When the Horn family moved to the Chester, NJ area in 2018, Horn felt the need to continue his mission, but found that most needs were already being met. After brainstorming, he began his foundation, Children of Wounded Servicemen, (COWS) to continue his efforts of giving back.

Horn has no connection to military service, except his brother is currently a Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. Brennan simply saw a need and wanted to be the one who worked to fulfil it.

“I thought that the military was a degree of people who don’t receive a lot of attention and you always hear about Wounded Warrior Project or organizations similar to them, but you don’t see any organization that is specified just for children of servicemen.” Horn said.

The junior at West Morris Mendham High School has raised over $20,000 towards his charitable efforts, simply through word of mouth or by setting up donation tables outside many local businesses in the Chester area. His donations have helped supply Christmas and birthday presents, sports equipment, and school supplies for children of wounded servicemen. Horn uses servicemen as an all-encompassing term, not just for the military but for policemen and firemen as well.

“Seeing a smile on a little kids face when they have something to open or the ability to compete in recreational sports, that is unimaginable and unexplainable. To make a difference in a kid’s life by doing a small act of kindness is just an incredible feeling.” Horn shared.

“Recently, there was a firefighter who was diagnosed with Leukemia. He has been bedridden for months, and he and his wife didn’t have the money for Christmas presents for their kids. After doing a speaking engagement at the fire department, we presented the wife and the firefighter with a cart full of gift baskets and you could just see the emotion on their faces, and it was just so heartwarming.” Horn said.

Local Dentist, Dr. Ira Goldberg, Teaches Other Dentists about Specialized Implants

D

r. Ira Goldberg, a leading local authority on dental implants, spent time teaching other dental implant clinicians about a specialized dental implant known as a “pterygoid implant.”

Over the past 7 months, Dr. Goldberg has been a participant in an advanced implant residency program in Puerto Rico, but was asked to guest-lecture about this implant technique.

Exploring Another Treatment Option for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities. The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue. The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire.

The etiology of CFIS is still unknown, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination.

For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue. Instead, doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms.

As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- bycase basis. A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Since chronic fatigue manifests differently in each person, this method of diagnosing is superior. The treatment plan is then formulated based on the individual’s diagnosis. As you can see in the chart- one Acupuncture treatment plan will address all of the individual’s symptoms as well as the illness as a whole. This is known as a root and branch treatment. Addressing the root cause of the chronic fatigue is addressing the illness as a whole while treating the branch aims to relieve all of the symptoms associated with the illness. Supply and Demand, Hoarding, Price Gouging -- and the Coronavirus

As the saying goes, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” I would add, “and anti-price gouging legislation in times of crisis.” Yet price increases in the face of sudden shortages are an important impetus to restore supply and demand market conditions that are closer to normal.

As many of us have experienced in the past few weeks, buying toilet paper, hand sanitizer and face masks has become more difficult and more expensive.

The reason, of course, is that unusually large numbers of people are rushing to buy these and other products that might prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It’s normal for people to stock up on supplies during crises. The immediate results are empty store shelves, soon followed by higher prices.

When this happens, politicians around the globe demand an end to the price hikes. The goal is to improve consumer access to the products now in higher demand.

In New Jersey, for instance, at least 10 retailers have received warnings from the government to stop their so-called price gouging. Similarly, the French government announced that it won’t tolerate such price increases and will soon decree a price ceiling on face masks and hand sanitizers. In a move guaranteed to worsen and lengthen the shortages, French officials are even going so far as to appropriate stocks of masks. Just this week, the Department of Justice threatened to act against “bad actors” who raise prices during this time of panic. The list goes on and on.

While well-intentioned, such heavy-handed intervention is a mistake on many levels: First, the rise in prices conveys nothing more than the unusually intense surge in demand for these products. Consumers

Mark Shields value these products more now than they did just a few weeks ago, which is reflected by the higher prices.

But here’s another reality: If prices are kept artificially low, there’s little incentive for shoppers not to buy as much as they can. Of course, only those shoppers lucky enough to get to the stores first can do so. Their hoarding then leaves nothing for shoppers in line behind them.

The fact is there’s no better means of slowing the rising demand -- and, especially, reducing excessive hoarding -- than allowing the very price hikes that governments are trying to prevent.

But price hikes have another important advantage: They create the necessary incentives for entrepreneurs to shift resources toward activities that increase the supply of these goods.

The higher prices encourage higher levels of production for goods like masks and hand sanitizers, which then increases supply. Even some companies that couldn’t afford to produce these goods in the past will be prompted by high prices to now do so. The Japanese electronics giant Sharp started to use its TV factories to make surgical masks when the domestic continued on page 6

CDC: Centers for Damaged Credibility

think I’m where most sane people are on the coronavirus outbreak: -Concerned but not panicked.

-Calm but not apathetic.

-Taking reasonable precautions but remaining skeptical of what all the purportedly “best experts” here in the United States are telling us about every aspect of their belated crisis management and response (especially on their pimping of vaccine development to prevent the disease).

Here are some plain, nonhysterical facts: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is a bloated federal government agency with a long history of incompetence, fraud, secrecy, mission creep and shady alliances with both social justice causes on the left and private corporations on the big business right. The “deep state” of entrenched bureaucrats embedded in the Beltway bowels is alive and thriving at the CDC. The unelected elites who’ve occupied top offices at the public health-industrial complex are hostile to public scrutiny while clamoring for ever-ballooning budgets. Their recommendations have often been detrimental to citizens’ well-being and freedom.

And, yes, many of the scientists who work there are rabidly anti-conservative and anti-Trump.

It’s a brazen lie that President Donald Trump “slashed” CDC funding, which is being used as an excuse for the agency’s coronavirus unpreparedness. Cognitively impaired and truth-challenged Joe Biden made the claim during last week’s Democratic debate that these purported “Draconian cuts” put Americans at risk. But Trump’s budget proposal to cut some sliver of CDC fat has never been enacted, and Congress increased funding, instead.

At nearly $7 billion, CDC’s annual budget is more than 200% larger than it was two decades ago. On top of that, a shady big business lobbying group called Corporate Friends of CDC has raised hundreds of millions of supplemental dollars -- which raises serious conflict-of-interest

Tom Coburn’s fiscal audit of the agency discovered vulgar expenditures including CDC syphilis prevention funds spent to host a “safe-sex” event with a porn star, CDC HIV/AIDS prevention funds spent on a transgender beauty pageant, and $45 million in CDC funding spent on conferences featuring prostitutes, protests and beach parties.

Despite the flood of money, the agency been caught flat-footed on outbreak after outbreak. They squander untold millions on other health threats in favor of pushing gun control and nanny state hobby horses (TV violence, helmet laws, video games, anti-bullying campaigns and explicit sex education, for example). CDC has one primary job -- Disease Control -- but has managed to botch it without ever learning from past failures.

Let me remind you of some of the CDC’s long history of royal screw-ups: -The notorious 1976 swine flu vaccine scandal was catalyzed by mass hysteria whipped up by CDC junk scientists clamoring for more money; Congress obliged and nearly 45 million Americans were unnecessarily jabbed with a vaccine for a disease that had fizzled by the time the shots were ready. -In 1999, the CDC misspent $22.7 million appropriated for chronic fatigue syndrome

and was investigated in 2001 for squandering $13 million on hepatitis C research.

-In 2000, the agency essentially lied to Congress about how it spent up to $7.5 million earmarked each year since 1993 for research on the deadly hantavirus. “Instead,

Government officials (and pundits) never seem to learn (or remember) that in times of crisis, naturally rising prices are necessary to guarantee that goods, services and inputs are used to maximum social advantage.

When governments prevent price hikes, they unwittingly (SET ITAL)create(END ITAL) shortages of vital supplies. Unfortunately, such government intervention makes it harder for people to recover from disasters or, today, to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

Think about it. Without price fluctuations to provide a signal to manufacturers, how will they know by how much or how quickly they need to increase production? If prices are kept artificially low, factory owners have no way to know for sure that actual demand (and not just hoarding) has risen enough to justify a change in their production schedules. Second, if governments keep prices from adjusting upward, the additional demand for masks might not result in enough

revenue to cover the extra costs of producing and shipping more masks.

The bottom line is that by keeping prices artificially low, governments around the world encourage artificially high demand, from hoarders, for example. Necessary increases to the supply chain will also be discouraged, which results in unnecessary shortages, long lines of desperate customers, empty shelves and black markets in dark alleys.

Aren’t we better off when products are actually on the shelves and available for purchase, even if only at higher prices? When no such products are to be found, except by the politically and socially connected, ordinary citizens lose out.

apparently without asking Congress, the CDC spent much of the money on other programs that the agency thought needed the funds more,” The Washington Post disclosed at the time. The diversions were impossible to trace because of shoddy CDC bookkeeping practices.

-In 2009, the CDC recalled 800,000 doses of swine flu vaccine for children ages 6 months to 3 years after the products manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur failed potency tests.

-In 2012, the CDC’s main building housing infectious anthrax, SARS and monkeypox gases was discovered to have been leaking deadly pathogens due to a flawed engineered airflow system.

-In 2014, the CDC’s lackadaisical response to Ebola virus gave the greenlight to Patient Zero Thomas Eric Duncan and infected medical personnel to board commercial airlines while ill -- exposing untold numbers of travelers to the deadly disease. Expensive isolation chambers that had been subsidized by taxpayers to the tune of $15 million sat buried in a Georgia warehouse.

-For the past few years, the agency has employed a fear campaign to induce Americans to get regular flu shots (formulated based on guesswork) using flawed statistics and despite international scientific conclusions that there is “no evidence” to support the CDC’s assumptions that the vaccine reduces transmission of the virus or the risk of

potentially deadly complications.

-Just this week, the Informed Consent Action Network reported astonishing results from its lawsuit against the CDC to obtain scientific documentation for the agency’s claim that “vaccines do not cause autism” -- specifically for the first seven vaccines given to your child in their first six months of life. CDC had stonewalled, and then finally produced 20 studies -- 18 of which were irrelevant to ICAN’s public records request and two of which suggest that vaccines may indeed cause autism. In other words: The CDC is lying while continuing to smear vaccine critics as “conspiracy theorists” and public health threats.

As if to underscore my point about this agency’s misdirected priorities and rank political pandering, the CDC director this week found it more urgent to condemn Republicans as racist for accurately describing the origins of the virus from Wuhan, China, than to do his job.

Informed diagnosis: The “best people” -- who have now been rewarded with more than $8.3 billion in new “emergency funding” -- are not in charge.

It’s very mind-opening about how blessed and how much we take for granted.” Horn said.

Morse and Vail first met in the fall of 1837.

“Morse was demonstrating the telegraph to one of his colleagues at NYU, when Vail, who had been looking for Morse walked into the room,” said Maressa McFarlane, Head Educator at Speedwell Village. “At the time the telegraph was unreliable. By the end of the evening the two had become partners. The two men did significant work on the batteries and worked on developing a satisfactory wire to transmit the signals.”

“Eventually they purchased hatmaker’s wire and wrapped it with cotton thread to in-

sulate it. They worked on the project together from the fall of 1837 through the winter and into January 1838.”

The first successful public demonstration of the telegraph occurred on January 11, 1838, in the Factory Building, which is considered “ The Birthplace of the Telegraph.”

The perfection of the telegraph is considered the start of the telecommunications revolution.

“We have several exhibits that use turning a crank or pushing a button. You turn the crank and the original sender starts to operate sending a message to the receiver which reacts to the signals with lights or clicking noises.”

The Factory Building is also where the two men demonstrated the first use of the Morse-invented “Morse Code” specifically for the telegraph. Morse, was originally an accomplished portrait painter before becoming an inventor.

Initially, the Morse code, transmitted over the telegraph system, was recorded as marks on a piece of paper that the telegraph operator would then translate into English.

However, it soon became apparent that the operators were able to hear and know the code just by listening to the clicking of the receiver, so the paper was replaced by a receiver that created more pronounced beeping sounds.

In 1843, Morse and Vail received government funding to test their telegraph system between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland. On May 24, 1844, Morse sent Vail the historic first message: “What hath God wrought?”

The answer was the first step in transforming how people communicated and conducted business. Rather than taking

weeks to be delivered by horseback or railroad, pieces of news could be exchanged between telegraph stations almost instantly.

The telegraph also had a profound economic influence, allowing “money” to be transmitted across great distances.

By the end of the 19th century, new technologies began to appear, many of them based on the same principles as the telegraph. Eventually, these technologies would render the telegraph obsolete. The telegraph has since been replaced by the even more ubiquitous devices such as the mobile telephone, fax machine, and Internet, that have rendered the telegraph a museum piece.

However, its invention stands as a milestone in the way the world communicates.

The Vail House offers a glimpse into the lives of the Vail family from 1844 to 1864.

Fully renovated by Stephen Vail in 1844, the home has original furnishings, antiques, and portraits of Stephen and his wife, by Samuel F.B. Morse in 1837, and given to the Vail family as gifts.

Speedwell Village is also where the design and building of the engine and many of the S.S. Savannah parts took place. The S.S. Savannah was the first steamship to cross the Atlantic in 1819.

Morris County Vocational School District Academy for the Performing Arts Dance Program Celebrates 20th Year

By Steve Sears he Morris County Vocational School District Academy for the Performing Arts Dance program is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special concert on May 15.

The event will be held at County College of Morris in Randolph.

MCVSD head Dance instructor, Lisa Peluso, has been working hard to combine the artistry of seasoned alumni and professional artists to make the special production in May happen. The well thought out and planned, 12-piece program should last about two hours.

Ruth Clark, the program’s founder back in 2000, will also attend that evening and speak about the program’s history. Peluso herself was a student of Clark’s while the latter was a professor at Montclair State University.

“I’m excited about it,” says Peluso, who has been at MCVSD since 2015 and is in charge of planning the May event. “I’m having a good time because I get to bring all the partners together that’s helped the program grow - obviously the founder,

Ruth Clark - and a lot of the guest artists who are performing who have their own companies and who have worked with the students, they’re performing.” Regarding collaboration with the three companies 10 Hairy Legs (the first guest artist to work with the program), Freespace Dance, and Von Howard Project - she says, “They’re all really New Jersey-based dance companies, all professional, and all three have been around I think for over a decade.” The evening also highlights current students, dance program alumni (some from the initial graduating class in 2004), and the County College of Morris Dance program. Peluso also knows many of the alum who will take part, because she was a guest artist near the program’s 2000 inception.

Performing Arts Dance Program... continued from page 14 Technical Education classes in the respective career area” she says. “The Morris County Academy for the Performing Arts is housed at Morris Knolls High School and is open to any student in Morris County through a competitive application process and audition. Students apply in the fall of their eighth-grade year and have a choice among three majors: dance, theatre, and vocal performance.” She then speaks to the attraction of the program. “Students have the opportunity to fulfill their graduation requirements while following their passion to develop their craft. Being a part of the academy affords students the unique opportunity to enroll in rigorous course work, work in state-of-the-art facilities, participate in master class workshops, and work with seasoned professionals from each field.”

The Academy for the Performing Arts Dance Program is tailored to prep students who seek careers right after high school or perhaps take up the same in college. Also,

completion of the course often prepares the students for other careers outside of dance, like technical theater, nutrition, and other related careers the department touches on in its curriculum. “What I noticed that they leave with which is great,” says Peluso, “is a lot of leadership skills, because their sophomore and junior year they get to choreograph their own pieces.”

Students schedule auditions, research their piece, music and costume choices, hold an audition, then finally cast their piece. “They see it from the beginning all the way to the end,” Peluso adds with satisfaction.

Peluso says of May 15, “Hopefully it will be a great way to honor dance that’s been here in this county, at the Morris County Vocational School District. I think we a lot of the time put a lot of focus on nonarts things, and I think it’s really nice to do something. I’ve been here for 20 years, and it’s been supported.”

Let Color Transform Your Home

nterior designers routinely use colors to transform a space – it can make a large cavernous room feel instantly cozier, it can take a dark and dreary space and make it come alive. Some designers will use a bold accent wall or like me, an unexpected pop of color on the ceiling. Whether it’s Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams or Pantone, the world’s premiere color matching system, there is always a lot of hype when each company announces their “Color of the Year”. They produce slick videos and even offer classes to designers so we can all be well versed in what the coming trends are. For 2020, these companies went in vastly different directions – from moody blues to light pastels. Let’s take a closer look.

Moody Blues Both Sherwin Williams (Naval) and Pantone (Classic Blue) selected dark blues for 2020. These are not colors for the faint of heart. These classic blues can be used to dramatic effect as cabinet colors in kitchens, an accent wall or even an entire room (if it’s got the right lighting). Accent these colors with golds for an elegant touch or crisp white for a more casual feel.

Airy pastels Benjamin Moore (First Light) and HGTV by Sherwin Williams (Romance) chose light and airy pastels for their 2020 colors of the year. First Light is a soft, rosy hue that pairs just as beautifully with charcoal grey as it does with creamy whites. And HGTV’s Romance has soft apricot undertones.

These colors are perfect for a bathroom or master bedroom – the soft pink makes any skin tone look lovely!

Inspired by Nature Both Behr (Back to Nature) and Farrow and Ball (Duck Green and Sap Green) picked beautiful shades of green.

Much like taking a walk in the forest, these colors bathe us in nature and help us to feel more connected. Green is thought to be a stress-relieving, calming color – that’s why you’ll find lighter shades in hospitals. Because it’s a ‘nature’ color, it pairs beautifully with other earth tones, warm sunny yellows, rusts, and browns.

Raritan Headwaters Honors Seven Outstanding Volunteers

hen Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) needs a hand, who steps up to help? Last year, 2,200 volunteers contributed a combined 8,600 hours of service.

They monitored streams for water quality, removed invasive plants, picked up trash along river and stream banks, planted trees, maintained trails, promoted well testing, helped out at Nature Day Camps, built bird nesting boxes, served as RHA ambassadors at public events, and more.

On Feb. 27, Raritan Headwaters honored seven outstanding 2019 volunteers at its annual member meeting and volunteer recognition dinner in Oldwick.

“We are incredibly grateful for our volunteers,” said Trish McGuire, RHA volunteer manager. “Their contributions and passion enhance our ability to carry out our conservation mission.”

She added: “One of my favorite quotes is, ‘Volunteerism is where everyone committed to strengthening the common good comes together.’”

The volunteers honored were: Nick Romanenko of Califon received the Suki Dewey Volunteer of the Year award for his 13 years of dedicated service. He began volunteering in 2007 as a trustee of the

South Branch Watershed Association, and continued after it merged with the Upper Raritan Watershed Association to become RHA. As an avid fisherman and member of Trout Unlimited, he leads volunteer stream restoration projects; as a professional photographer, he donates his time and talent to fill RHA’s archives with beautiful images. He is a loyal volunteer at RHA events, including the annual Country Fair. And he has a perfect attendance record at Board of Trustees meetings.

“Nick is a stellar volunteer, enthusiastically supporting our watershed protection mission for over 13 years,” said McGuire.

“We are truly grateful to Nick for his dedication and service and very happy to recognize him as our Suki Dewey Volunteer of the Year.”

Kim Nowicki of Basking Ridge was honored for her leadership in bringing students from the Bonnie Brae School to work on land stewardship projects at RHA’s campus, the 170-acre Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve. “When Kim began supervising the boys on their trips to RHA, we watched the program flourish,” said McGuire. “Kim shows the boys how to work by digging into the project and leading by example. She motivates the group with positive feedback

Ken Snyder of Morristown was honored helping restore the health of RHA’s properties with his volunteer land stewardship work. “He knows his mission, it parallels ours: healthy ecosystems on our land ultimately lead to high-quality water in our streams,” said Rebekah Buczynski, RHA’s stewardship manager. “One such ecosystem that Ken is now expert in stewarding is

that of the diminutive, yet fiercely beautiful bird of prey, the American kestrel.” Snyder, who is retired, has also installed bat boxes in Fairview Farm’s meadows and owl boxes in the forests.

Cierra Harris of Morristown was honored for her assistance with RHA’s Nature Day Camp last summer. She started as a camp helper through the Morris County Vocational School District’s Structured Learning Experience program, and stayed out of continued on page 24

ven if you’re not Irish, a green treat like this Luck o’ the Irish Mint Pie can get you and your guests into the festive spirit. With enough seasonal flavor to go around, this recipe makes two pies, so be sure to cut every leprechaun a generous portion.

Luck o’ the Irish Mint Pie Makes: 2 pies (9 inches each) 3 3/4 cups heavy whipped cream, divided 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 1/4 cups, plus 2 tablespoons, powdered sugar, divided 5 drops green food coloring 1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided 1/4 teaspoon mint extract 1 bag mint chocolate candies, chopped, divided 2 chocolate cookie crusts (9 inches each) 1 bag mint chocolate candies To make filling: In bowl of stand mixer, whisk 2 1/2 cups heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Transfer to bowl.

In separate stand mixer bowl, beat cream cheese on high 2 minutes. Gradually add 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar and green food coloring; mix until smooth.

Add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and mint extract; mix well.

Fold prepared whipped cream into cream cheese mixture. Fold 1 cup chopped mint chocolate candies into filling.

To make frosting: In bowl of stand mixer, whisk remaining heavy cream and remaining powdered sugar. Add remaining vanilla extract and mix until stiff peaks form.

Pour filling into crusts and smooth tops.

Fill decorating bag with frosting and pipe thick band around edges of pies.

Then pipe circle dollops evenly around edges of pies.

Scatter 1 cup chopped mint chocolate candies in middle of pies. Place whole mint chocolate candies into each dollop of frosting around edges of pies.

Refrigerate until firm, 5-6 hours.

Sweet Potato Walnut Falafel Bowls Falafel: 1 raw sweet potato (12 ounces), peeled and cut into chunks 1 cup cooked quinoa 1/2 cup California walnuts 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 cup flour 1 egg vegetable oil Tahini Dressing: 1/4 cup tahini 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4teaspoon garlic powder sea salt, to taste Bowls: 4 cups loosely packed curly kale, coarsely chopped 2 cups cooked quinoa 1 cup julienned carrots 1 avocado, sliced

To make tahini dressing: In small bowl, whisk tahini, lemon juice, water, maple syrup, ground cumin, garlic powder and salt.

To prepare bowls: Place equal amounts kale, quinoa, carrots and avocado in four large salad bowls. Place four falafel balls in each bowl and drizzle with dressing. Garnish with toasted walnuts and minced red onion, if desired.

Morris County Heritage Commission Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

By Michele DiPasquale he Morris County Heritage Commission celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and offers special programs to highlight relevant aspects of Morris County’s compelling history. The programs will include topics that celebrate and recognize much of Morris County’s rich history.

For history buffs, The Morris County Heritage Commission is a fountain of riveting information. It is the Heritage Commission that designates points and places of relevant history by providing the site markers to honor historical locations, much of which date as far back as the 18th century.

The Historic Site Markers are those familiar dark red signs with white lettering seen frequently throughout Morris County, marking locations of historical interest. The historic site marker program has been in place since 1975. For those interested in the process of site marking, there is information available to read about the guidelines for marker placement on their website.

It’s fascinating to look up some of the site markers on the site, which is crammed with relevant, engrossing historical facts and points of interest scattered throughout Morris County.

“The Commission is also charged with conserving and preserving materials in the County archives,” explained Peg Shultz, Director of Archives and Heritage Affairs.

When asked what makes Ms. Shultz and her colleagues passionate about Morris County’s history, Shultz explained that the staff, as well as volunteer members at MCHC, hold degrees in history.

“Exploring, understanding, teaching and appreciating the county’s history and heritage shows us how the past has shaped who we are today, as a community and society,” she said.

“The Commission does this through caring for the County Archives, which holds rare documents related to the county from as early as the 18th century, offering public programming in a variety of Best Practices workshops which cover things like Long Range Plans and grant writing skills, along with programs on a wide array of topics central to Morris County and New Jersey history,” Shultz explained.

For those wondering what the process of getting something site marked is all about, Shultz recommended going to the website and searching for Marker Guidelines.

“And then, an applicant should read over the guidelines, call or come into the office to discuss the application and process. If the site meets the criteria, a member of the staff will assist with the application. The final application that will be presented to the members of the commission for consideration will consist of the application form and materials supporting their request,” Shultz said.

The MCHC’s new online virtual exhibits program will enhance topics presented in the displays at the County Courthouse and Cultural Center and provide a new way to learn about Morris County history.

Furthermore, The Morris County Heritage Commission publishes a series of tour brochures featuring a brief history of each town in the county with photographs and notes on its historical sites. These Historic Highlights brochures have been completed for about two-thirds of the county’s

39 municipalities.

The MCHC offers historically rich publications and books, covering such topics as colonial and revolutionary Morris County, Morris County and the Civil War, Historic Sites of Morris County, and the Slavery Debate in Revolutionary Morris County.

Alan Stultz of Annandale was honored for his dedication to monitoring water

quality in local streams. He started as a stream monitor volunteer and expanded his involvement by taking on additional responsibilities. He participates in biweekly chemical sampling of stream water as part of a partnership project with Raritan Valley Community College, allowing RHA to identify problem sites that will be part of future case studies and analyses. “Alan donates his time to ensure that our water is being tested with enough frequency that we can detect any significant problems and

try to mitigate in a timely fashion,” said Maria Berezin, RHA watershed scientist. “This helps to advance our mission and expand our capacity.” Stultz also helped monitor water turbidity during the removal of the Burnt Mills dam last fall, and spent time talking to residents of the area about the project and its importance to water quality.

Mendham Resident and CCM Professor Receives National Faculty of the Year Award

Parnell Distinguished Faculty Award from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

“Dr. Eber has impacted the lives of thousands of students. She is a stellar professor with an impact that has a profound influence on CCM,” said Dr. Anthony J. Iacono. “It is no exaggeration to state that CCM would not be the quality institution of higher education that it is today without her many contributions. She also is a highly sought after mentor and advisor by students and also other faculty members who recognize her commitment to their success.”

At CCM, Eber directs the work of 60 professors. She has served as chair of the college’s Curriculum Committee for more than a decade and also has served as chair of the college’s Academic Standards Committee, General Education Task Force and Academic Integrity Review Board. She has chaired numerous search committees and was interim dean of the School of Liberal Arts three times.

“I desperately wanted to be a teacher and have such a great love for my discipline.

I am so fortunate to be part of this community,” said Eber. “Receiving this award is such an honor. I’m gratified beyond mea-

sure.”

“In all that she does, Dr. Eber is a model of character. She lives up to the high expectations she sets for her faculty and students, expresses the courage of her convictions and leads a career of selfless service,” said Dr. John Marlin, vice president of academic affairs. “She is a treasure for CCM, and is most worthy of this recognition.”

The award was presented to Eber on March 30 at the national AACC conference.

Mendham Teen Establishes STEAM Non-Profit

By Dawn M Chiossi elieving that students can reach for the sky no matter what, STEAM Forward nonprofit organization believes that there should never be a price put on the potential of others-- literally and figuratively.

STEAM Forward was the inspiration of Mendham teen Nicholas Vitebsky, as a way to tangibly combine his love of computer programing, music, and giving back to others.

Investing in people in the community here and abroad, STEAM Forward was founded in 2017. With the goal of empowering students and enriching their lives, this nonprofit runs computer coding workshops, content, and musical concerts for thousands of low-income students. By working with large corporations and nonprofits, they bring students, technology professionals, and musicians together to end education inequality in STEAM fields.

To date, approximately 3,700 students have taken advantage of the STEAM Forward initiative. Vitebsky was even awarded the PPM Prize for Social Change for his efforts.

Vitebsky shares that he came up with the idea for STEAM Forward when he was not able to find personable, high-quality resources online or in the community specifically for kids without a supportive financial or family situation.

“We are very unique, producing community workshops to mostly middle and high school students,” Vitebsky says, explaining that they often teach classes such as Python, Java, website development, and Scratch. STEAM Forward is a win-win for everyone from the student volunteers to help mentor the students, to the participants

themselves.

Truly a pioneer in its field, STEAM Forward focuses on innovative ways to build on the new instead of clinging to the outdated. Armed with the knowledge that young people face a plethora of challenges today and that it takes a different perspective to meet an overcome them, Vitebsky was determined to make STEAM Forward a different type of nonprofit. “It is a whole new way of teaching, of learning,” he explains.

“At STEAM Forward we don’t want learning to be boring. We engage the students in various ways. It isn’t just hearing a passive lecture. Some students are visual learners, but some are not, so the programs reflect that. Some of our programs are auditory, and some are even tactile, with sensory and interactive technology. When students are engaged, they are learning at their fullest capacity and are successful.”

Some of his favorite activities include having the students go outside to use and maneuver drones, and web site development where the students can enjoy using graphics and animation on the screen.

The program is extremely relatable for both students and teachers. “Students enjoy STEAM Forward because we know how they think and assimilate information.

Teachers like it because they see valuable teaching techniques and want to use them in their own classes.” Vitebsky shares.

With a deep conviction that traditional fields such as music are just as important as the more modern fields of coding for students’ self-expression, STEAM Forward runs charity concerts. As a music lover and a jazz musician at Mendham High School, Vitebsky is particularly excited about this aspect of the organization. He is gearing up for the large concert being held in June.

Garden State Yacht Club to Host Boating Safety Course and Two Open Houses

he Garden State Yacht Club on Lake Hopatcong will offer a US Coast Guard-sanctioned boating safety course on Saturday, May 2, 2020. Given in one day, students are eligible to receive the NJ Boating Safety Certificate at the completion of the course and passing the exam. All boaters are required by New Jersey law to have this certificate. The cost of $75 covers materials, the exam, and lunch.

and connection with others most of all. He recalls a student from Queens in one of his workshops. “Originally we couldn’t have been more different,” Vitebsky says, “But during the classes, he was so enlightening.

We found a way to connect. It was super special.”

Reverend Beau Nelson Shepherds Two Congregations in an Active, Energetic Way

By Steve Sears everend Beau Nelson is Pastor of two congregations: Saint Mark Lutheran Church of Morristown and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Florham Park.

He started at the latter in May 2019 and was officially installed as Pastor in both churches on the same day, last November 9, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. respectively.

He had been serving at another Lutheran church in Jersey City prior to his new callings.

Nelson has been referred to as “young and energetic,” a description which draws a laugh from the 34-year-old. However comical he finds it the description may be an apropos one. On Sundays, he has 9:15 services at Saint Mark, and then treks in his car 12 combined miles north up Route 287 and east on Route 24 to Good Shepherd for 11:00 worship. “The difficulty,” he says, “is I can’t be with both congregations as I’d like to be,” he says.

Both Good Shepherd and Saint Mark within the past few years had pastors leave either due to retirement or switch to a different congregation, and were every weekend served by visiting clerics in the pulpit. Nelson was named the permanent “leader of

the flock” when both worked with the Bishop of the New Jersey Synod of the Lutheran Church and agreed to a Shared Ministry, where Nelson is part-time Pastor of both.

“Oh, my goodness! It’s incredibly exciting to be in both of these communities,” Nelson says regarding being Pastor of two parishes.

“Excitement and possibility. The folks here at Good Shepherd are committed to this ministry continuing for decades to come, and because they are committed to the Gospel message being proclaimed in word and deed, they are committed to doing what God is calling us to do. It’s very exciting, but at the same time we also have to live in the here and now.” At Saint Mark, there is a hunger to be a bigger community presence. “To do the work Jesus has called us to do; not just sit in church for an hour and just leave. They want to be a real part of the community.”

Both congregations have about 100 members but are different. Florham Park is an older in age congregation with a lot of emphasis on activities for senior citizens, the congregation primarily that age group.

“They are seniors with lots of energy,” says Nelson, who will be married this upcoming Easter Sunday for one year to his wife, Alex-

is. “They do so much in the community, and there are so many organizations that we partner with (a list of how the congregation serves can be found at www.good-shepherdchurch.net). Nelson calls the reach a “global and local connection.” “While we are an aging congregation, there is lots of energy.

They appreciate my energy and enthusiasm, and I also appreciate their willingness to dive right in and be excited about ministry.”

As for Saint Mark, there is not a large senior membership, but is a working age group congregation with a number of families with

babies to college students. “A lot of our ministry there is focusing on, especially as we’re dreaming ahead, how do we - knowing that families are very busy and still want to have some spiritual connections and be filled spiritually – serve as Jesus told us to serve our neighbors? We’re working on that,” says Nelson.

Celebrate Earth Day April 18 with Stream Cleanup

“It’s absolutely true that many hands make light work,” said Cindy Ehrenclou, executive director of the nonprofit watershed watchdog. “In just three hours last year, 1,700 volunteers removed 18 tons of trash and recyclables from 46 sites in Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris counties. They made a big impact in a very short time.”

This year, the 30th anniversary of the RHA Stream Cleanup falls only a few days before the 50th anniversary of Earth Day – a day dedicated to supporting environmental protection and celebrating clean air, water and land.

“The Stream Cleanup is in keeping with the spirit of Earth Day,” said Rebekah Buczynski, RHA’s Stream Cleanup coordinator. “Not only does it beautify local stream corridors, it also protects drinking water supplies and prevents litter from washing downstream to the Raritan Bay and Atlantic Ocean, where it can become a hazard to ma-

rine life.”

Vetfest Presents Music and Food Trucks This May

By Megan Roche s winter comes to an end, people are itching to breakout those lawn chairs and blankets, longing for days of sunny weather and blue skies. On May 3 (raindate: May 17), head out to Roxbury’s Horseshoe Lake for a day of fun that benefits the greater community of homeless veterans.

Rich Goldberg, the mastermind behind Vetfest, was looking for a way to continue his efforts in helping the state’s homeless veteran population. Through his work volunteering for Community Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Goldberg has come to know many veterans throughout the area who have simply fallen on hard times.

With a passion for music as well, Goldberg combined the two and decided on a concert to benefit them. The first ever Vetfest was held in 2019 and was a major success, raising over $24,000.

On May 3, beginning at 12:00 noon, Horseshoe Lake at Succasunna will be grooving, all for a good cause. Vetfest has the best of food trucks and talent coming together to help New Jersey’s homeless veterans. Goldberg is encouraging families to come and spend the day, with lawn chairs and blankets in tow.

“Hang out for the day, there is going to be so much there to do for kids and adults.

This is all about our veterans. The important thing is to give these vets who have given so much for us, we want to give them a great day, all while raising money to support them. To be able to give them a great afternoon, just like anyone else coming out, that’s what we ultimately want to do.” Goldberg stated proudly.

At the time this article was written, bands were still signing up to come and donate their time with a performance. Currently scheduled are The Frontiers, a Journey tribute band, A Brothers Revival, an Allman Brothers tribute band, Sensational Soul Cruisers, a Motown and R&B band, The Best of the Eagles, an Eagles tribute band, and New York State of Mind, a Billy Joel tribute band.

“I’ve gotten to know so many of these veterans throughout our area. These veterans are humble people and grateful people.

All they want to do is get back on their feet, and if we can give them a little step up, a little assistance, that’s really what it’s all about. They did their job and went out and served and did everything for us, and now what I ask people to do, is just to come out and have a fun day.” Goldberg said.

Food trucks include; the Empanada Truck, Cubano X-Press, Kona Ice, Jersey Rollz, Clubhouse Dogs, Cas’s Polish Food, Thai Food Addict, Bearded One BBQ, and Wood Fired Pizza. There will also be free entertainment for the kiddies in the family with bounce houses. Tickets are on sale for early bird pricing until April 15th.

Early bird prices are $10 for adults, $6 for children, and $25 per family. Ticket pricing after April 15th are $15 for adults, $10 for children, and $35 per family.

An important part of the event, for Goldberg, is allowing children and families to meet some of the folks who benefit from those who attend. There will be plenty of veterans and veteran related organizations present on the day of the event to offer insight and information so bring as many questions as you’d like.

The Monarch Sanctuary Installation Arrives at the Morris Museum

erreform ONE, an architecture and urban design research group based in Brooklyn, New York teamed with BASF to launch the Monarch Sanctuary installation at the Morris Museum. The installation is a nearly full-scale mockup of a building façade system that doubles as a vertical meadow for monarch butterflies. It is an object study in enhancing urban space with satellite habitats, designed for other species that convey new possibilities for a more biodiverse and hospitable built environment.

The installation was originally created for Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Design Museum’s Nature – National Design Triennial, displayed in New York City in 2019. “This installation is a great fit for the Morris Museum given the recent announcement of it being the sole museum in the state of New Jersey with a Smithsonian affiliation,” said Cleveland Johnson, Ph.D., Executive Director, Morris Museum.

For more than six years, BASF and the Morris Museum have worked together offering children opportunities to explore the connections between science, chemistry and their environment. “BASF’s sponsorship of Terreform ONE’s Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is another opportunity to reinforce the need for biodiversity and educate the community about the importance of the monarch butterfly,” said Molly Borst, BASF, Manager of STEM Education - North America and Morris Museum board member. Beginning in March, BASF also sponsored Springtime Super Science and Dino Family Fun Day. Terreform ONE’s mission is to combat the extinction of planetary species through pioneering acts of design. Led by Mitch Joachim, Ph.D., an architect, Fulbright Scholar and TED Fellow together with architect Vivian Kuan, this exhibition embodies their current research which points to a catastrophic reduction in species.

“As we strive to re-make cities and overlay new socio-ecological principles and technologies, we must thoughtfully design the interactions between humans and nature,” Joachim said. “With this installation, our objective

is to create an experience that not only reorients towards a more conscientious future, but also provides a possible solution for the future of a delicate species.”

To create this prototype installation, Terreform ONE engaged BASF. Specialists of the company’s Master Builders Solutions Technical Center in Beachwood, Ohio engineered and tailored solutions to meet the special requirements for the museum exhibit. The team incorporated lightweight materials and an integral color admixture to enable suspended display and aesthetics. “Our goal in collaborating with partners such as BASF, is to tap into their incredible material resources to introduce new applications and novel solutions,” said Kuan.

Terreform ONE is working to integrate this technology and concept into the built environment of cities. Working with Kenmare Square, developers in New York City, Joachim and Kuan developed the concept to turn a townhouse on Lafayette Street into an ecological way-station sanctuary.

“This is a pioneering building concept – one that aims to be ecologically generous, weaving butterfly conservation strategies into its design through the integration of monarch habitat in its façades, roof and atriums,” Joachim added. “This building façade offers a new biome of coexistence for people, plants and butterflies. The project alone will not save the monarchs, but it will raise awareness about our much-loved insect residents.”

The monarch butterfly is an iconic species that can be simply identified by its bright orange color and unique markings. Interest in this species has increased in the last decade due in part to a decline in the eastern monarch population over the last 30 years. Conservation can take many shapes, from farmers establishing habitat in non-productive crop land to urban and suburban households working milkweed into their gardens. “Monarchs have a phenomenal innate ability to find milkweed,” explained Chip Shilling, Sustainability Strategy Manager, BASF. “Unique concepts like the Monarch Sanctuary can allow butterflies to find food, increasing their survival. Providing a habitat, by incorporating

milkweed into your gardens, you’re providing a forage area for monarch butterfly larvae,” added Shilling. For example, BASF’s conservation project Living Acres #MonarchChallenge works with farmers and golf courses to protect native milkweed and re-establish new habitat outside of farm fields and in out-of-play areas of golf courses.
