Chester Teacher Plans on Bringing Experiences in Prestigious Supreme Court Summer Institute Back to her Classroom

I

By Alexander Rivero n early June, Victoria Ade, a history and social studies teacher at West Morris Central High School, attended the prestigious Supreme Court Summer Institute in Washington, D.C.--a six-day teacher professional development program that focuses on improving teaching practices as they relate to the United States Supreme Court. Ade returned from the experience with a wealth of information she is now ready to give her students. The program itself, which provides educators from across the country with in-depth looks into how the Supreme Court functions, operates under the guidance of Supreme Court experts, authors and journalists, and attorneys, each of whom give the participating teachers an inside understanding of how the Court selects and decides its cases, as well as what it feels like to argue before the storied bench itself. For years, Ade has worked with materials from Street Law, an educational company that supplements social studies and history teachers across the country

with nuanced lessons in law and civics. On a routine scan of the website for classroom materials, she noticed that the Supreme Court Summer Institute was taking applications for the 2022 session. She decided to give it a shot. “It was a very lengthy process,” she recalls. “I had to write a great deal myself, and I had to get my supervisor to write a letter of recommendation for me.” Her first application was rejected, but then there was an opening and she was admitted. In Washington, Ade stayed in Thomas Circle, and every day as a participant in the Summer Institute, from 8:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening, got a chance to engage with different experts on the world that is the U.S. Supreme Court. From discussions to lectures to moot court sessions to videos, the experience was enriching beyond Ade’s initial expectations, and reaffirmed her own creativity in bringing in fresh and relevant subject matter to her own classroom at West Morris Central High School. “In my classroom this upcoming

year, I’ll be trying out a moot court,” says Ade. “Specifically, in my US I class, I’ll be pulling in some cases that’ll allow us to discuss the constitution in depth.” Ade says that her methods in the classroom, especially those where she calls on students to articulate their thoughts on what is going on in the text, never fails to bring out the best in them. They remain engaged in the lesson, and she feels that introducing something as participatory as a moot court–where classrooms will be divided up on a given issue and each side will argue on behalf of a given point of view–will only add to the students’ interest in the subject matter. “I really love the idea of exposing my students to things that they wouldn’t otherwise have any idea about,” says Ade, referring to the courses and materials she covers, which include not just US I and II, but sociology, and American legal systems. “I love each of these subjects because of how they open doors for students to have meaningful discussions about contemporary issues. It’s a

pleasure for me as their teacher to help usher them into a place where they can have these discussions with each other, and to have them conduct a kind of civil discourse hard to find in many adults today.” Reflecting on who her historical inspirations are, Ade cites Abraham Lincoln for the strength of character it took to prevent the full breaking up of a nation that at the time of his presidency was headed straight for permanent division. She also cites the late Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a profound influence on her life both as a person and professional. “A lot of what I do is geared not only on the short-term goal of teaching my students something they’ll hopefully remember past the summer,” she says, “but on making them better citizens overall. The kids push me to come prepared each day, to keep learning and to keep doing better. I only wish I had more time with them, because in this specific field, there really is so much to learn all of the time. There is no room at all for stagnation, and a common theme in my courses is the need

to grasp and tackle modern, up-todate issues and understand them at a deeper level with the historical issues that preceded it.” Ade points to sociology as one of her favorite courses to teach in particular. “I couldn’t imagine not teaching it,” she notes. “I was given the course when I started teaching at West Morris Central High School. The subject’s main thrust is to come up with an answer for why we are the way we are, and how individuals can work to change society for the better.”

West Morris Mendham High School Teen Well on Her Way to Mastery Over the Saxophone

W

By Alexander Rivero est Morris Mendham High School junior Ginger Meyer got the feeling something special was going on with her saxophone around her time in middle school. Her band director at the time–Kenneth Piascik, DMA–used a skills chart and offered awards for students who made the most progress on their respective instruments, especially whenever they increased the tempo at which they played individual scales. Meyer showed exceptional improvements, moving quickly up Piascik’s chart, and his confidence in her affirmed her own suspicions: she and her saxophone had a date with destiny. She dove head first into her practice sessions with renewed vigor and purpose, emboldened by the fact that her proficiency with the instrument was enough to spark the notice of more experienced musicians and teachers. By the time she reached the 7th grade, specifically during her time on the Classical Regents Band of North Jersey, she was certain that the stars had aligned

for her in the saxophone. Surrounded by the more experienced ninth graders that made up most of the band, she shone nonetheless. “All of my progress with the saxophone has been a bit of a snowball, especially in terms of developing my ability,” says Meyer by phone. “In the beginning, things progress very slowly, but then, if you stick to it consistently, you’ll see that progress speed up and your new abilities will absolutely take you by surprise when they show up.” In May, Meyer competed in the 27th Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band competition, held at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. Competing against over 80 of the most highly skilled high school jazz bands from across the country, Meyer crowned the event by taking home the coveted Outstanding Alto Saxophone Award. The Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival is perhaps the most cutting-edge educational jazz events on earth. Every year, high school

musicians from across North America descend on New York City for three straight days of practices, workshops, jam sessions, performances, and rehearsals at the “House of Swing”--Fredrick P. Rose Hall, the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Her list of accolades and awards does not begin and end with those earned at Lincoln Center, naturally. Meyer has been hard at work building her musical portfolio for years now, and has been promptly recognized at high points all along her journey. To name a few items of recognition, she was recently awarded First Chair in North Region Jazz Ensemble (2022), the All-State Symphonic Band (2022), and the All-State Wind Ensemble (2021). She also recently auditioned for the 2022 AllState Jazz Ensemble and was awarded the highly coveted first chair, alto saxophone. Coming this September, she will begin her rehearsals for the concert, which will be held this upcoming October. To stay sharp, Meyer says she likes to keep her world small.

“I really like focusing on the small things,” she says. “Chest support, for example, making sure my cheeks are puffed out. When I’m improvising, it should continued on page 5

Mastery Over the Saxophone... continued from page 4 be melodic, not chippy, so I pay close attention to that, for that smoothness of sound.” Reflecting on what makes the saxophone so unique as an instrument, she says its special quality begins, for her, with it being a sort of hybrid between a woodwind and a brass instrument. “It’s just such a uniquely sounding instrument,” she says, “and how it has elements of each of those two different worlds. That ‘bite’ of the saxophone–that initial start of the note–has hooked a lot of people, me included. It has extraordinary ‘singability’, and it can almost mimic the sound of a human voice at times.” Meyer cites Johnny Hodges and Gerald Albright–each legendary saxophonists–as some of her top musical influences. A typical practice session, says Meyer, is non-existent, as they differ widely. She usually jumps right into whatever specific area she happens to feel like practicing most on that given day. “After that, I’ll realize I need to do

scales, long-tones, arpeggios. I’d like to work more on patterns, which come from the act of transcribing,” she says, referring to the more meticulous side of a musician’s daily work where she will try to determine whether or a note has a particular rhythm within it, work that requires patience, a sharp ear, and plenty of consistent effort. Asked whether she plays any additional instruments other than the saxophone, Meyer says she used to play the piano, and has played the violin since the 4th grade. She is in the process of learning to play the clarinet to increase her flexibility as a musician, and the fact that she is doing so is by no means an anomaly. “Most master saxophonists,” she says, “have mastered other instruments as well, and it is expected of most saxophonists working the jazz scene to play both the clarinet and the flute.” She certainly is young enough to do it all, and judging by her accomplishments and work ethic, she is driven enough as well.

Long Valley Opera Singer Grateful for Past, Optimistic for Future

E

By Alexander Rivero arly on in her childhood, Chelsea Friedlander’s grandfather noticed something peculiar about the child. She recalls he used to say, “Before she could ever talk she could sing, and before she could walk she could dance.” The words were certainly true then, but they somehow ring truer now, if only because they seem to have hinted at what was to come for his granddaughter in the future. Friedlander, gifted with a golden voice and the spirit of a performer since birth, grew up in Long Valley, where she graduated from West Morris Central High School and went on to attend the Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio. She returned to wrap up her academic training with a masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music, after which she hit the road again, now as a budding professional, to travel the country as a singer. She is an only child and credits her mother Helene, herself an accomplished pianist and musician who also attended the Manhattan School of Music, with first noticing her voice and taking the initiative to nurture it, a decision that required long drives to singing lessons in Dover every Friday, rain, shine, or even snow, to study under master singer

James McClure. Among the most important things Friedlander says she learned from McClure over her years studying under him, she said that maintaining proper vocal technique ranks high. “From the beginning of my studies until now, I think I’ve maintained a healthy vocal technique, and [McClure] helped me with that a great deal,” she says. “It’s the study of proper practicing, and I benefitted tremendously from his ability to foresee what my voice could sound like down the line, and orient my practicing and preparation techniques around that.” Having a healthy technique for an opera star requires having, Friedlander notes, “a supported, controlled breath to prevent us from, among other things, singing from our throats, which many people make the mistake of doing.” Aside from breathing techniques, McClure taught her the importance of proper hydration, sleep, and the need to warm up and rest one’s voice, especially around performance days. At the age of 15, after her training with McClure, Friedlander moved on to study under Juilliard-trained opera singer Lauran Fulton Corson. “From then on—and to this day—she’s been like my second mom, as well as my teacher,” she says.

As Corson’s pupil, Friedlander sang her in an opera for the first time at the Light Opera of New Jersey in Basking Ridge, a place filled with beautiful memories for her, and one she today calls her home stage. She was 16 at the time, and jumped at the small role she was offered in Orpheus of the Underworld, a classic opera, a sort of lampoon of the ancient story of Orpheus and Eurydice. She

remembers the experience vividly still. “I played Cupid and sang a little aria, the full piece, and I remember that Lauran sang the role of Eurydice.” It was a role Friedlander herself would sing at the Light Opera ten years later. Corson—together with her husband Bill—just stepped down as directors of continued on page 7

continued from page 6 the Light Opera, where the two worked in tandem for over 25 years. Both she and her husband, now living in Vermont, remain active members of the Board of Trustees. “I was very lucky as an artist to have had such strong support in my home stage where we liked to try things out before going on to bigger venues,” Friedlander says. “The Light Opera welcomed me and I welcomed each of those opportunities, and I feel particularly happy at the idea that I contributed to moving that company upward.” Now an accomplished performer, Friedlander has better honed her preperformance routines to suit her own needs. Aside from securing enough sleep and drinking enough water, the singer makes sure to avoid any carbonated beverages before performances, as well as coffee, as it tends to dehydrate. She maintains a balanced diet not just for health, but for her own mental clarity. How she feels, she says, has a major effect on how she performs. “Doing concert work is a very concentrated experience,” she says. “You have your dress rehearsals, performance, and you’re done, all in one shot. So what I eat during these days has a lot to do on performance, how I feel, how I execute.” Friedlander says she is constantly inspired by the people who did so much to

help her get to where she is today, and that reminiscing on the sacrifices they made for her fuels her to be a better performer. Principally, she thanks her parents, for insisting on the importance that she keep singing; her husband, for the support he gives her every day in chasing her dream; her wonderful teachers, James McClure and Lauran Fulton Corson, for showing her the craft from the ground up; and her own voice students. “My students teach me so much, and I was especially grateful for them because they helped me stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced so many performing centers to close down,” she says. “I see myself in them, and their love of music and singing and their curiosity makes me a better singer, performer, and student of the craft.” Asked where she hopes to see herself in a few years, she responds without hesitation: “The MET.” If interested in seeing Chelsea Friedlander perform, she will be performing as Cunégonde in the concert version of Voltaire’s Candide on her home stage—the Light Opera of New Jersey—this fall. Friedlander is represented by Athlete Artists, and for more information and upto-date videos, please visit her website at chelseafriedlander.com.

Thinking of a New Hobby? Consider These Tips

uring the pandemic, millions of people found themselves with more leisure time than ever before. Many made the most of that newfound free time by exploring new hobbies and interests. Hobbies are beneficial in various ways. According to Psychology Today, hobbies help structure time; promote flow, a sort of meditative state; foster new social connections; and give people interesting traits and things to talk about. A study at San Francisco State University found that employees who had creative outlets outside of the office were better at creative problemsolving on the job as well. Anyone looking to add a new pastime to their lives can consider these tips as they begin their pursuits. Consider cost Consider financial constraints or even the potential to make money when seeking new hobbies. For example a person who likes to fish may want to expand that hobby by buying a boat and selling deep-water fishing trips. Such individuals must consider factors like the cost of the vessel, fuel, licensing fees, and fishing bait/supplies, among others. Learning to play an instrument involves the rental or purchase of an instrument and possibly a tutor. An individual’s hobbies may be limited by what he or she can or cannot

afford. Explore goals People should investigate what they want to get out of a hobby. Certain hobbies may help individuals get in shape while others may teach them new skills. Some people may simply may want to make friends, which is possible with any joint activity. Investment of time Individuals should determine how much time they need to pursue a given hobby and then consider if they have the time to do so. Some hobbies can start to feel like second jobs if they consume too much of an individual’s free time. Individuals should carefully consider the overall time commitment they’re willing to make to a hobby. Don’t forget interests No one should do a hobby just for the sake of having something to do. A person should carefully consider any and all interests, then pursue hobbies that align with their interests. A person enamored with animals may want to join a birdwatching club. Someone who is an avid baker may want to push that interest to another level by taking a cake decorating class.Hobbies are worthwhile endeavors that can expand knowledge and build new friendships.

Are You Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired? Exploring Another Treatment Option for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities. The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue. The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire. The etiology of CFIS is still unknown, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination.

For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue. Instead, doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms. As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- bycase basis. A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Since chronic fatigue manifests differently in each person, this method of diagnosing is superior. The treatment plan is then formulated based on the individual’s diagnosis. As you can see in the chart- one Acupuncture treatment plan will address all of the individual’s symptoms as well as the illness as a whole. This is known as a root and branch treatment. Addressing the root cause of the chronic fatigue is addressing the illness as a whole while treating the branch aims to relieve all of the symptoms associated with the illness. A single Chinese herbal formula can also be prescribed to treat both the root and branch of the chronic fatigue syndrome. For more information about Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue Immunodeficiency Syndrome, call Kearstin R. Tripi, L.Ac at Mt. Olive Acupuncture & Wellness 973-527-7978.

By Steve Sears uth Nortje, Director of Project Horses for Forces in Long Valley, sets the scene for those who have yet to take the lovely trek up Keltz Lane. “When people come, they will often tell me that the moment they start driving down that driveway, they can start feeling the stress drop off their shoulders and they can start feeling the heavy burdens just going,” Nortje says. “And of course, initially when they first join the program, that feeling only lasts for a couple hours after they leave, but then as they keep coming, that feeling starts to last longer and longer, and that becomes part of their system again. They feel that peace, and that this farm is just a very, very, very serene, beautiful and peaceful place.” Nortje is describing the entrance to the Drakestown

Nortje, who competed in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics as well as the PanAmerican Games, has both owned and worked with horses since she was young. A PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, she also worked at an Adaptive Riding & Equine Assisted Activities & Therapies Facility for

almost 10 years, so she knows horses and the benefit of them for healing. She explains the difference between Project Horses for Forces and other programs. “First, we provide programs obviously free of cost,” she says. “Some programs do charge for them, but we provide programs free of continued on page 11

continued from page 10 any cost for any of our participants.” Secondly, Project Horses for Forces includes the whole family. There are a number of visible and non-visible wounds that could affect veterans and their loved ones. A short list includes PTSD, traumatic brain injury and its side effects, substance abuse and its side effects and after effects, back problems that don’t allow function or ability to walk, and perhaps even being physically disabled. “That affects their family, so the whole family suffers together and the whole family heals together,” Nortje says. “And the awesome thing is when you see families telling you that it has changed their family dynamic, it has brought them together.” Then the third thing that sets Project Horses for Forces apart is that they have no cutoff points. Nortje explains why. “If you consider that they (returning veterans of war) get about 60% improvement in those sensations in their symptoms, they’re sleeping better, they have less flashbacks, or they start to feel more serene, on a daily basis and then on an hourly basis. They start to feel more relaxed; they can breathe again, they don’t feel the anxiety and all those things. We don’t abandon our warriors once they’re in our program.” There are 25 horses on the farm, and

Project Horses for Forces, which celebrated five years in June, has access to about 15. There are programs for individuals or for groups, and horsemanship with optional riding lessons are offered. As for those who wish not to get involved with the horses, there is the option of doing vegetable gardening, maintenance work on the pasture, stalls or the barn itself, upkeep of the riding arena, clearing of the forest trail, or other facility needs. And, it’s all done among nature. Of the volunteer team at Project Horses for Forces, some are civilians, but some are veterans. “We have a lot of veterans that are part of our volunteer group, and I will tell you they are dedicated,” Nortje says. “The principle is, for healing to happen, you want a sense of comfortableness around one another. And then of course, the horse is the one who brings this recognition and awareness to the person, and they learn from that and change their ways from that. Then, the environment helps to rewire their brain and get the brain relaxed again, for that sense of well being to become more of a standard feeling instead of a momentary thing.” For more information about Project Horses for Forces, visit www. horsesforforces.weebly.com.

More Precious Than Gold, Be The Gift of Mentoring A Young Person

I

By Richard Mabey Jr. n September of 1966, I began the eighth grade at Chapel Hill School in Lincoln Park. It was a most magical and enchanting time for me. Once again, I was able to walk to school in the early morning. There was the chirping of the song birds, the scurrying of squirrels climbing up and down the trees that adorned Main Street. There was a certain joy and happiness of once again walking to school with the old gang. For just a few months ago, I had been recovering from a full-year battle with dreaded Rheumatic Fever. And, all through seventh grade, I had tutors. For that entire year, my feet never touched the ground. continued on page 13

But in that year, something very special happened in my life. From both, my hospital bed at times and my bed at home, I began to write feature stories for the old Lincoln Park Herald. Mr. Nicholas Marino, the Editor-in-Chief of the old Lincoln Park Herald, took an interest in my writings. While I was battling Rheumatic Fever, I would write stories about Boy Scout Troop 170. My mom would type them up and hand deliver them to Mr. Marino at his little newspaper office, located close to my home. During my year-long fight with Rheumatic Fever, I wrote dozens of little news and feature articles for Mr. Marino. And, he graciously printed them all. But if it wasn’t for my mom, typing them up for me, I would have never had my start in life as a writer. I do not think that I ever chose to be a writer. I think God called me to be a writer. There were way yonder too many coincidences in my journey to find success in the writing arena. I was to write news

articles and feature stories for the Lincoln Park Herald, for many years. Mr. Marino was a tough editor, but he also had a heart of gold. He was an old school editor, all the way. Now at 68, I look back at the people who helped me in life. For the most part, most of them have gone on to be with the Lord. It’s too late to tell them thank you. I guess that’s one of the side effects of growing old. If there’s someone who has reached out a helping hand to you, please do consider letting them know just how much you appreciate their kindness. The sands of the hourglass are forever flowing, the clock is always ticking, the pages of the calendar get torn away far too quickly, and the years pass in a seemingly blink of an eye. Appreciation and thankfulness are virtues that are more precious than gold. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. He can be reached at richardmabeyjr@ hotmail.com. Please put on the subject line: More Precious Than Gold.

Chester Thrift Shop Offers Boutique Experience

D

by Elsie Walker ecades ago, when the bishop was dedicating the Church of the Messiah in Chester, he nicknamed it St. Elsie’s. That was because the church was built on the site of the stable of an old dairy farm and “Elsie” was the name of a famous cow (Elsie the cow, the Borden’s trademark). In 2010, when church member Diane Cardillo of Califon was looking for ways to fundraise for the church, she came up with the idea of a thrift shop. That shop, which took up residence in the church basement, was dubbed with the church’s nickname, “St. Elsie’s Thrift Shop”. Located at 50 State Route 24 in Chester, St. Elsie’s Thrift Shop has grown since then and now takes up eight rooms in the basement of the old section of the church. There people can find gently used and new clothing for men and women, household items, and home décor items. It is run by nine volunteers; the co-managers are Cardillo and Linda Ochs of Branchville. Recently, Cardillo talked about the thrift shop offerings, guidelines for donating, where unsold items go and more. “[There’s] a need for this in today’s economy,” shared Cardillo in talking about the thrift shop. Opened on Thursdays from 1pm – 5pm and Saturdays from 10am – 2pm, the shop offers affordable prices on all its merchandise. Cardillo noted that something she enjoys about volunteering at the shop is “seeing the excitement of someone getting a bargain.” In addition, to its usual low prices, there are clothing sales two times a month. One is a 50% off sale and the other is a dollar day sale on items without tags. The shop also participates in the Morris

County Clerk’s Operation Give Back Veteran’s ID card Discount Program. “I take pride in it,” said Cardillo of the shop which is setup like a boutique and includes two dressing rooms and a bathroom. She noted that in its early days, the shop got some help from an outreach program of Walmart which came in and set-up hardware for displaying the shop’s items. Cardillo shared that the shop “[has] a relaxing atmosphere” and that the volunteers are “one big happy family”. Some work the front desk and some work in the back going through donations, sorting, and putting out stock. However, the store could use more help, and anyone interested in volunteering can reach out to it. Cardillo sees a variety of benefits in the church having a thrift shop. Its proceeds help support church operations and outreach. Also, having the shop promotes community comradery. Of course, there is the benefit of people getting a bargain on goods. Some shoppers take advantage of that to buy goods to send overseas to help family members. Not everything gets sold. However, Cardillo noted that “We try to find a place for everything.” As needed, items go to Market Street Mission. Blankets and towels that can’t be sold are given to animal shelters and clothing and other textiles that can’t be sold at the shop are sold per pound to a firm which sells them in third world countries or recycles them. The shop gets its merchandise through donations; however, it doesn’t take everything. It takes certain types of items in new or gently used condition, not stained, continued on page 15

continued from page 14 cracked or damaged. When asked about guidelines, Cardillo shared, “If you wouldn’t buy it at a bargain sale, if you wouldn’t pay for it, don’t donate it.” The shop doesn’t take items such as furniture, hangers, electronics, children’s clothing, baby items, medical supplies, toys or puzzles. (The only exception is if the toys or puzzles are brand new.) To learn more about donating and what the shop doesn’t take, see its webpage at www. messiahchester.org/aboutst-elsies.html. A problem the shop has with donations is that people will leave off large, heavy bags of items that are difficult for the volunteers to maneuver. “We prefer smaller bags to overstuffed large bags, “said Cardillo. New Help for Veterans and Active Military from Project Help

T

hese unprecedented times are only getting more concerning and contributing to a higher level of anxiety, particularly among our Veteran population. The constant streaming of mostly discouraging news, along with a reduced ability to freely mingle with others to keep spirits up, makes it difficult for many military and veterans to maintain their morale. A Warrior’s Welcome, Transitioning and Remembering, is a military and veteran’s community, wanting to help those who have given so much. A new secure place for Veterans to come together to help each other through issues they are having, is being launched by Project Help. “The meetings will be facilitated by Reno Schwind, a Marine Corp veteran and resident of Sussex County,” said Sandy Mitchell. During a veteran’s military service, their base, ship or shore station is a place to call home – a safe haven to share in the company of some of the finest men and women with a mission in common. A Warrior’s Welcome aims to create that same spirit of brotherhood at its weekly gatherings. A Warrior’s Welcome will consist only of active service and veterans, and will provide a safe place for all veterans to communicate and engage with other veterans on a level that is simply not possible in most social networking environments. A Warrior’s Welcome gathering encourages informal discussions on a wide range of interests – from problems

they are dealing with, local community concerns, uplifting stories and humor and other topics as the group determines as favorable at the time. Quite often the discussions are about issues these warriors are trying to handle. With a number of members suffering from combatrelated and other health issues, AWW’s weekly network support gatherings provides a safe environment where veterans can discuss the situations they face each day. As deemed necessary and desired, there will be experts in the field join the meeting. Once every other month there will be a webinar that is open to all to help with issues, answer questions and bring in experts to supply real answers to the problems faced by our warriors. In support of the Military/Veteran community at this difficult time, they invite you to join A Warrior’s Welcome via the following link: https://projecthelp.us/warriorswelcome/ AWW will quickly evolve into a hybrid event, meaning it will be virtual and live at the same time, so more service men will be able to participate. This networking group is for men only. There will, in time, be a group for women only. All questions can be directed to Reno Schwind at renoschwind@gmail.com or Sandy Mitchell at Sandy@ ProjectHelp.us. Need an urgent response? Call

The 1920’s Life in Morris County

I

By Henry M. Holden f we open the window of history into the Morris County of the 1920s, we will see images of smartly dressed people, flappers, jazz bands, and speakeasies. Fast cars, pleasure-seeking adults, energetic stock markets, and the birth of Hollywood’s “golden age” are also in this window of history. In fact, Morris County was a microcosm of America. But there is another side to the story. The decade started on a positive note with the end of the Great War and the worldwide pandemic that had combined killed millions of people. But it also ended with the economic turmoil unleashed by the 1929 stock market crash, the resulting Great Depression, and the shadows of another world war. But what happened between the beginning of the decade and its end? James Thomas, Department Head of the North Jersey History and Genealogy Center at the Morristown & Morris Township Library, and his team have put together an outstanding photo exhibit that explores life in Morris County during the “roaring 20s”

“It took about 27 hours to set up this exhibit,” said Thomas. “It is the first exhibit I’ve been part of where we focused on just one decade. We have a great team here and we worked long and hard on the exhibit. I learned more about the 1920s in Morris County than I knew before we put the exhibit together. I was reminded of the important changes in society in the 1920s. This is our first onsite exhibit in three years,” said Thomas. “We began the research on the exhibit last summer (2021).” Captioned on many of the photographs are histories that have been forgotten. For example, Lou Gehrig, of New York Yankee baseball fame, played in Morristown under an alias, “Lou Long, “and “Lou Bush.” As a student athlete at Columbia University, Gehrig was banned from playing in any pro or semi pro capacity. However, the young Gehrig managed to sneak away and spend the 1922 season playing for the Morristown Colonials, at Collinsville Field. With the end of World War I, Morris County and all of America would begin to witness the great military industrial power put to civilian use. A fledgling auto

industry at the beginning of the war was now capable of producing thousands of automobiles for civilian use. And it did. America soon became mobile, driving to vacation and tourists’ destinations

and homes in the now-growing suburbs like Morris County. The explosion of automobile ownership affected not only the daily lives of residents continued on page 22

continued from page 20 but also strongly changed the character of neighborhoods and downtowns. The developing middle class resulted in a residential building boom and greater discretionary income. There was a new form of advertising introduced during this decade. Two hallmarks of America’s 1920s corporate culture were the emphasis on bureaucratic standardization, and managerial hierarchy to maximize productivity and profits. Retailers embraced customer focused sales practices to indulge the public’s comfort and desires, whether in extravagant downtown department stores or the dry goods stores on Main Street. Store owners began to allow customers to inspect and handle goods unsupervised, as opposed to the traditional method of keeping products safely behind a counter under a clerk’s supervision. On January 16, 1920, one year after its ratification, the enactment of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating beverages. However, it did not prohibit the private possession or consumption of alcohol, which allowed legal loopholes for consumers possessing alcohol. The exhibit explores the role of local governments as they attempted to enforce unpopular Prohibition

laws while battling corrupt officials. Several illicit clubs operated in Morris County with relative impunity, and where corrupt officials squared off against reformers. “On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified which guaranteed women the right to vote,” said Thomas. “Voting rights allowed more women to enjoy new careers and less domestic drudgery thanks to laborsaving devices.” People enjoyed new entertainment choices thanks to the many fads, films, and radio programs of the era. Radio also played a role in the formation of American society. From music to mystery, to “breaking news” the radio became a must-have household appliance. “We haven’t used QR Codes very much in the past,” said Thomas. “But for this exhibit we used two. One is on John Pinkman, an early historian. Pinkman’s love of history led to his appointment as Morristown’s official historian, where he meticulously documented its African American community. The other QR Code is of Buster Keaton, the silent screen actor. Keaton’s first independently produced film, “One Week,” (a 19-minute silent film) was one of the 1920s top grossing releases.” The exhibit also discusses the second rising of the Ku Klux Klan. “There was much Klan activity in Morristown and the surrounding area,” said Thomas. “The first Ku Klux

Klan formed in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War; however, increased law-enforcement greatly diminished its activities.” However, there was also a resurgence of the Klan in the 1920s. Much of the recruiting was done in secret at fraternal organizations in Morris County. The Klan sought to preserve the status quo for establish citizens and particularly those of white native-born Protestant Americans. The Klan targeted African Americans, immigrants, Jews and Catholics with racist and xenophobic rhetoric, and ideology. “Despite numerous public meetings and reported cross burnings around Morris County, the Klan had a difficult time gaining traction in many parts of New Jersey. This was especially true in Morristown,” said Thomas. “This is mainly due to the large percentage of foreign-born and Black residents that made up the population.” The twenties also witnessed a rising Black middle class and entrepreneurial working class in Morris County that exercised its newfound economic strength by starting successful businesses and constructing new homes. The Twenties: Big Business, and Daily Life in Morris County, 1920-1930, is on view on the second floor of the F.M. Kirby Gallery of the Morristown & Morris Township Library, through December 2022.

Blast from the Past: Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center – A Legacy of Education

T

By Henry M. Holden he Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center opened in 1998, and is home to a permanent collection of photographs and artifacts that document the inspirational life of the winningest player in baseball history, Lorenzo (Lawrence) Pietro Berra, but known to everyone as “Yogi” Berra. “Yogi Berra cared so much about education,” said Eve Schaenen, Executive Director of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center. “We built a site that would honor Yogi and his emphasis and caring about education.” “Yogi, and his wife Carmen, had this idea to educate kids using baseball as a vehicle for learning,” said Schaenen. “If I had to distill the work that we’re doing now it would be to make sure that we are saving his legacy by promoting the values that he stood for. The values are written all over the museum’s walls, as part of the permanent collection. They are teamwork, respect, determination, and humility.

These were the qualities that defined Yogi as a human being, not just on the ballfield but throughout the course of his life and they really inform all the education that we do.” The museum is home to various objects, including the mitt Yogi used to catch the only perfect game in World Series history. “We are using Yogi and all that goodness in those values to teach kids everything from language arts to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, (STEM)”. There are four topics listed on the website, Race, Immigration, Women in Sports and Financial Literacy. These are virtual field trips. The program on race grew out of an exhibit from the Negro leagues in Kansas City. “It’s the story of the Negro Baseball leagues, and the players” said Schaenen. “It’s also about taking aspects of their lives and using it as a way to talk about structural racism. The program talks about the Negro continued on page 24

Blast from the Past...

continued from page 23 leagues in such a way that allows us to get into the social justice issues.” ‘The program has seen a lot of success locally. Every seventh grader in the school district has seen it. It’s very gratifying to see the success of this program, and the fact that we’re reaching as many students as possible.” The museum just opened an exhibit on Women in Sports, featuring Billie Jean King, the tennis great. “We want to honor and inform people that her efforts were crucial in eventually bringing equality to women in sports. We also want to recognize her commitment to support the LGBT+ community as an activist in a time when it was not fashionable to take such a position.” There is a one-week summer baseball camp where kids learn the fundamentals of baseball on a ball field and is located on the campus of Montclair State University. “For the rest of the year, we have both in-person and remote field trips.” Yogi was a son of Italian immigrants who grew up in an immigrant neighborhood on “The Hill,” in St. Louis. He had a typical mid-20th century immigration story, where the family was important. “It’s very rewarding to see the response from schools about immigration as well,” said Schaenen. During World War II, Berra served in the US Navy as a gunner’s mate on the attack transport USS Bayfield during the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach. He received several commendations for his bravery. During an interview on the 65th Anniversary of D-Day, Berra confirmed that he was also sent to Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion. Berra earned a Purple Heart, a Distinguished Unit Citation, two battle stars and a European Theatre of Operations ribbon. “He came back, to play baseball and raise a family,” said Schaenen. “We use that as a way of accessing other immigrant stories. That unit really addresses the immigrant experience, and everybody has an immigration story.” While playing in American Legion baseball team, Berra received the nickname “Yogi” from his friend Jack Maguire. After seeing a newsreel about India, Maguire said that Berra resembled

a yogi from India whenever he sat around with arms and legs crossed waiting to bat or while looking sad after a losing game. “The Financial Literacy subject came out of feedback from educators. We found that some young people have very limited exposure to ideas of financial literacy. This course is a way of getting into that. We created a board game that kids can play that allows them to map out what it would feel like to be a rookie ball player making a certain salary. It allows them to think about how they would spend money. We try to create these topics in such a way that they would be appealing to young people.” Women in sports is now front-page news. “The women’s soccer team is now earning equal pay as men. That is progress,” said Schaenen. “And women are on the front page of every newspaper lately regarding the gender issues around competitive swimming. It’s addressing some of the inequalities in sports. Billie Jean King’s advocacy is one reason why women are getting paid in sports. We try to make sure that we are not just talking about an isolated moment in history. By using Yogi’s full story, we are able to shed light on all sorts of topical issues today.” Yogi is also famous for his “Yogi-isms” aka malapropisms. “You can observe a lot by just watching,” “We made too many wrong mistakes,” “The future ain’t what it used to be,” and perhaps his most famous one, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” “In 1972, Berra was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame,” said Schaenen. “But the legacy of Yogi Berra extends beyond the playing field. We encourage people to come to the museum and that view Yogi not only as a Hall of Fame great but as a Hall of Fame human being.” Berra was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and has his picture on a US postage stamp on July 1, 2021. Berra passed away in his sleep, at the age of 90, on September 22, 2015. For more information, visit yogiberramuseum.org/visit. The museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 12-5pm, Closed to the public Mondays & Tuesdays.

Centenary University Launches New Concentration in Equine-assisted Service

C

entenary University’s Equine Studies Department will launch a new concentration in equineassisted services for the fall semester. The concentration will prepare graduates to provide therapeutic riding services to children and adults with cognitive, physical, and social-emotional disabilities. The program will also cultivate leadership skills necessary for graduates to step into administrative roles in the largely nonprofit field. Centenary is a higher education member of PATH International, which leads the advancement of professional equineassisted services to support more than 53,000 special needs individuals, including nearly 6,000 veterans, through a variety of equine-assisted services. For many years, the University has offered a therapeutic riding instructor training program, which is an eight-credit course sequence that allows both matriculated and non-degree students to fulfill all hands-on requirements for PATH’s certified therapeutic riding instructor (CTRI) application and prepare for the certification exam. The addition of a degree concentration and minor in equineassisted services is an expansion of this wellestablished instructor training program.

Karen Brittle, assistant professor of equine studies and director of Therapeutic Riding At Centenary (TRAC), said the University’s new concentration will address a nationwide shortage of certified therapeutic riding instructors and administrators. “There is an ever-expanding need for trained professionals in this field, which was founded in the late 1960s and early 1970s and continues to grow rapidly,” she said. “As our visionary founders reach retirement age, there is a need for a next generation of industry leaders to carry the EAS industry forward. This degree will put our graduates on the leadership track.” The University is already well known in therapeutic riding. Centenary University Professor Emeritus of Equine Studies Octavia Brown ’08 HA, Ed.M., D.H.L., a trailblazer in the field, is a founder of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, the precursor to PATH International, and the former director of TRAC, an accredited adaptive riding program that provides equine-assisted services to individuals with disabilities. Through TRAC’s veterans programming, the University also provides the benefits of therapeutic riding to military veterans and their family members. One of the top college equine studies

programs in the country, Centenary University has produced countless leaders in the field, as well as numerous nationallyranked riding teams. Academically, the University has a competitive track record for student acceptance to selective veterinary schools. The University’s riding teams also have an impressive history, placing first at the 43rd ANRC National Equitation Championship this spring—Centenary’s third national title in nine years.

Brittle said the University is proud of its reputation in equine-assisted services: “When we send young people out into the world to work in this industry, the more related experience they can have, the better. It’s not easy to provide these services. It takes a lot of maturity and experience to do it well. Having additional educational credentials will make Centenary graduates more prepared to serve the industry.”
