Morristown Mom Battles Medical System to Save Daughter So she investigated the symptoms, and found out Patricia wasn’t the lone one experiencing them, with many on the West Coast suffering. “I learned they were caused by the impact of different (environmental) elements on the immune system,” Andrade says this gave her the hope she needed to continue the fight for an answer. And the strength to travel with Patricia to Dallas and meet Dr. Rea, who specialized in MCS. It also meant she and her family were separated: her husband in New Jersey with their 12-year-old son, and Andrade had to quit her teaching job. In Texas, Patricia and Ana-Maria lived for a year in a porcelain mobile home, at an ecological camp for MCS patients under Rea’s care. They experimented with various alternative therapies… but mold and humidity so prevalent in Dallas, made it unsuccessful. Patricia’s condition became so severe she was considered a ‘universal reactor’ to each item she ate, wore and touched. She couldn’t count on her central line for feeding anymore, and was allergic to normal food. It was suggested she try ‘wild game.’ continued on page 6

By Jillian Risberg he spent three years staring down daily challenges to save her daughter’s life as she battled Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). That inspired Ana-Maria Andrade, Ph.D. to self-publish a new memoir: Together Against the Wind. A Mother Remembers. “To give hope to families of other victims of this devastating and rare disease, and inspire them not to abandon the fight to help their loved ones,” says Andrade, who calls penning the book cathartic. She is grateful (to the universe) when she sees her 42-year-old daughter happily married and the mother of three beautiful girls. “Patricia is back to her usual self: full of energy, ready to respond to challenges, and above all, healthy,” she says. But it was a long and arduous road to get there. “My experiences those years opened the door to an otherwise unknown area… allergies,” she says it allowed her to put herself in the shoes of society’s misunderstood outcasts. “Becoming a part of this world presented me with a clearer view of the demoralizing state in which patients with MCS exist, oftentimes for life.” Their first year in New Jersey was the most difficult — her daughter’s symptoms, diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, had no known cause. It was 1995 when Andrade tried to create a chemical-free environment, she swapped her daughter’s bed sheets, pillowcases and blankets with organic cotton bedding. “I stripped her room of even the smallest decoration,” she says while also eliminating stuffed animals that could harbor dust in her bedroom and applied the same techniques to the rest of the house. Despite the detailed decontamination, Patricia failed to improve. To make the situation worse was doctors’ dismissive attitude towards them. “They all thought my daughter’s symptoms were psychosomatic, and I was crazy for believing in her made-up symp-
toms,” says Andrade. “My mother’s instinct guided me to do everything I could to save my daughter.” According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, MCS is a controversial issue as to whether it is a clinical diagnosis or not. They say many in the medical community lean towards the symptoms being physical manifestations of psychiatric illness rather than a primary medical illness. “Even hospitals as famous as Hopkins don’t have all the answers,” Andrade says she’s in communication with several associations in Europe and South America where there are many with MCS. “They call it the ‘invisible illness’ or ‘rare Illness.’ Environmentally ill people in those countries survive best they can, on their own, because of the same lack of support I have found in the USA. “

She couldn’t stand wearing anything washed with normal detergent,” Andrade says. She again looked for dry conditions, this time the desert. In Santa Fe, New Mexico they spent another year in a house in the middle of nowhere, isolated from society and its contaminants. “There, I discovered new alternative treatments that restored my daughter’s health,” Andrade says. As she recently watched a program where a well-known TV doctor presented a young woman “allergic to everything around her,” (with the same isolation from chemicals Patricia had more than 20 years ago) the doc acknowledged

She didn’t have the strength to see her friends, an essential aspect for a teenager.” She is thankful her daughter agreed without hesitation to try all the therapies she suggested, and also feels fortunate her husband always supported her, “Even when he did not agree with my choices.” One would never imagine the anguish Patricia endured if you see her now, according to her mother. “She has a normal diet and can go to restaurants. She can also wear normal clothes.” According to Andrade, Always trust your instinct. “Mine has never failed me, and when I listened to it, I was able to save my daughter’s life.” Together Against the Wind is available in both English and Spanish on Amazon.com.

ignorance about the disease, and the Morristown mom felt compelled to put her story into words. MCS, also known as Environmental Illness (EI) is the appearance of symptoms, such as: asthma, headaches, muscle and joint pain, extreme fatigue, confusion, memory loss, stomach ache, indigestion, fainting, anaphylactic shock, etc., in a person, at any given time, due to constant exposure to low-levels of environment chemicals in (food, house cleaning products, fertilizers, gasoline fumes, electromagnetic field, etc.). Andrade says she is more than happy to help anyone with questions. In the book, she describes arrival at a Dallas clinic and the first consultation with Rea. “Blood tests reveal the presence of several chemicals, including three types of gasoline,” she says the doctor asked if Patricia’s bedroom was located on top of the garage. According to Andrade, it was, and when the car was turned on and off over the years, gasoline fumes travelled through the walls and penetrated her room, the doc said. She inhaled it, which is why it’s in her blood…. “… To think we have been living in that house for 10 years.

Morris County Adopts 2022 Budget Without An Increase in Tax Rate
M
orris County’s 2022 Budget was adopted by the Board of County Commissioners, who held the tax rate stable for another year as they expanded funding for public safety and health, infrastructure projects, human services, education and economic development. “Our 2022 Budget provides the high level of services Morris County residents have come to expect, especially since the pandemic hit, yet it also delivers the type of fiscal prudence demanded by tax-paying families dealing with historic inflation in America. This is the third consecutive year we have prevented an increase in the county tax rate. Still, we were able to increase spending on public health and public safety,” said Commissioner Deborah Smith, a member of the Board of Commissioners’ Budget Committee. The $331.1 million 2022 Budget includes a $62.5 million Capital Spending Plan for the calendar year, which will be offset by $30.4 million in grants, and the budget buffers the county against unforeseeable economic changes by anticipating a $57.9 million fund balance. That balance marks a $1.7 million increase over last year, solidifying the prospects of Morris County maintaining
an AAA Bond rating, which it has held for 46 years. “Maintaining our AAA standing is important to every resident because it enables our towns and school districts, as well as the county, to borrow funds for our important infrastructure projects at the best possible finance rates, saving everyone money in both the short and long term,” said Commissioner Deputy Director John Krickus, Chair of the Board’s Budget Committee. The 2022 spending plan also includes an estimated $34.3 million in educational, cultural and economic development incentives, and dedicates $68.3 million to public safety programs and another $36.6 million toward health and human services programs. “Community-based human service initiatives, such as programs for mental health and drug addiction treatment, along with senior nutrition programs, veteran services and even employment training, are heavily supported by this budget,” said Commissioner Kathryn DeFillippo, a member of the budget committee. The budget includes Morris County’s contribution to the $24.8 million creation of the Morris County Vocational School
District’s new Career Training Center at the County College of Morris in Randolph. The two-story, 45,940 square-foot Center will be financed by $6.2 million from the county and $18.6 million from state under Securing Our Children’s Future (SOCF) Bond Act. The Center has the potential to add 500 more students to the School District, providing them with the skills and training leading to lucrative careers, while expanding the diversity of the county’s workforce and helping leading industries in the region to grow, prosper and improve the area’s economy. Critical Community Investments Among the educational, cultural and economic development incentives included in the 2022 Budget are: • $18.9 million to support the County College of Morris, Morris County Vocational School District, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the Morris County Superintendent of Schools Office • $8.9 million to support the 20,394-acre Morris County Park System • $5.7 million for the Morris County Library and Morris County Heritage Commission • $816,000 for Economic Development and Tourism
The $62.5 million Capital Spending Plan prioritizes road resurfacing with $14 million earmarked for work on 25.6 miles in 15 towns. Another $2.8 million is slated for intersection improvements, and $6.83 million is dedicated to bridge and culvert projects. Road Resurfacing Projects Include: • 2.5 miles of Park Avenue from Columbia Turnpike to Route 124 in Madison, Florham Park and Morris Township • 2.5 miles of Village Road in Harding Township • 2.2 miles of Fairmount Road in Washington Township • 2.2 miles of Green Pond Road in Rockaway and Jefferson townships Intersection Improvements Include: • Boonton Avenue at Taylortown Road, Montville Township • Flanders Netcong Road and Main Street Intersection with Route 206, Mount Olive • Guide Rail Upgrades and Installations throughout the County Bridge & Culvert Projects Include: • Dickson’s Mill Road Bridge in Harding Township • Hurd Street Bridge in Mine Hill Township • Pleasant Hill Road Bridge in Mount Olive

Change Your Genes Everyday Yep…
I
I’m Referring to Your Genes Not Your Jeans
mean you should probably change your jeans every few days as well, but that’s a discussion for another time and another day. You have probably been taught that the genes you are born with are yours for life. You excuse things like your angry behaviors, high blood pressure or your weight on your genetics. My patients often tell me that their illnesses are genetic, and because of that they can’t do anything about it. What if I told you that isn’t completely true? What if I told you that changing the way you think can actually change your life? That might sound like fantasy to some, but it’s true! I know, I know… now you feel like you’ve been living a lie, but it’s time to wake up!! Check this out… Research shows that those who practice Meditation/Yoga can “steer” their DNA, reducing inflammation and reducing their risks for diseases like cancer. You may be asking how in the heck is that possible? Let’s break it down… Our bodies have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) aka “fight or flight” response is
activated by stressful situations. Historically this fight or flight response was needed for survival in the wild. For example, when being chased by an animal the SNS kicks in and all functions that are not needed for immediate survival (i.e digestion…) are shut down. Among other processes, the body speeds up, heart pumps faster, the muscles contract and the brain is more alert. Activating the SNS also triggers the production of a molecule called Nuclear factor Kappa b (NF-Kb), which is responsible for our gene expression. During this process NF-Kb activates genes that release cytokines. These cytokines are responsible for producing inflammation on a cellular level. During a life/ death event this is actually helpful short -term. However, in modern day life this same sequence of events occurs due to every-day stressors (that weren’t present in our early ancestors lives). Things like traffic, work-related stress and finances trigger this same “fight or flight” response, causing the same cascade of events that lead to increased NF-Kb and increased release of cytokines. In fact, just thinking about that stressful situation you had earlier will cause the same cascade of events to take place. Most people in
today’s society are living in a constant “fight or flight” state. This long- term “exposure” to these cytokines are linked to cancer, premature aging, mental disorders (including anxiety and depression) and other diseases. On the other hand, it has been found that practicing yoga/meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS, known as the “rest and digest” state, is the way that the body should be functioning normally. In this natural state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases and digestion takes place. Studies show that practicing Meditation/Yoga, specifically, reduce NF-Kb, therefore turning off the genes that release the cytokines, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response and therefore prevents premature aging and diseases like cancer. This is all happening on the molecular level! You can actually leave a molecular signature on your cells to regulate your own gene expression! Boom… and there you have it! Now all you have to do is start Meditating to experience the benefits for yourself! For more information about Acupuncture, contact Mount Olive Acupuncture & Wellness 973-527-7978.

CCM Students Win Two of Three Awards in National Data Fest Competition
group of students at County College of Morris, calling themselves the Tidy Titans, recently crushed the American Statistical Association (ASA) national Data Fest competition for community colleges, winning both Best in Show and Best Use of Statistical Analysis. Coming up winners, earning two of three awards, were Dylan Jay, of Mendham; Paul Cohen, of Morris Plains; Angela Cavalli, of Dover; Maxwell Bilyk, of Lake Hopatcong; and Zach Herman, of Denville, all students in CCM’s Data Analytics Certificate Program. In the weekend-long competition, the CCM team analyzed data provided by the Yale School of Medicine, consisting of 2 million rows and 131 columns, to determine how Elm City Stories – a game-based program to teach adolescents about making good decisions and avoiding risky behavior – can identify at-risk students. “Dylan led the team, plowing through the data dictionaries and figuring out what all the codes meant,” says Professor Kelly Fitzpatrick. “Paul spent time helping everyone better understand the games and did a great job demoing the games for the class. Max programmed the analysis in Python, while Angela and Zach worked in R. The team then spent five hours on Sunday final-
izing their results. They choose to perform cluster analysis in Tableau after tiding the data in R/Python.” “I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such a talented team of students for this competition,” says Cavalli of her experience competing in Data Fest. “I have been learning R this semester in Professor Fitzpatrick’s Data Science class, which proved to be very useful to tidy the data we received and present a meaningful takeaway. The experience has motivated me to take my coding skills to the next level.” Data Fest was founded in 2011 and has grown into a popular and intense competition for undergraduate students from around the nation. “We are so very proud of our students and the knowledge and the skills they have gained,” says Fitzpatrick. CCM offers a credited certificate program in data analytics. Recognizing the high demand for data analysts, Fitzpatrick applied for and received a $235,000 National Science Foundation grant in 2020 to launch the program. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that data analytic jobs will grow 34 percent by 2026. The CCM Data Analytics Certificate consists of five courses for a total of 16 credits

that can be completed over the course of two semesters. Students in the program learn R, Tableau, Python and SQL programming languages and are qualified to pursue immediate employment upon earning their certificate. No prior experience in statistics
or computer programming is necessary as the program includes an entry level course in Python and lower-level math pre-requisite statistics and data science courses. To learn more, visit https://bit.ly/CCM-DataAnalytics/.

$15,000 Checks Delivered To Chester Small Businesses Morris County Commissioners’ Visit to Chester Borough Highlights Grant Program
wo owner-operated shops in Chester Borough were hand-delivered checks for $15,000 each as the Morris County’s Board of County Commissioners and Morris County Chamber of Commerce continued to invite more small businesses to apply for grants under the Morris County Small Business Grant Program. “The challenges were great for anyone operating a small business during the pandemic, and the businesses continue to be under pressure. Morris County designed this program, using our allotment of federal American Rescue Plan dollars, to help small shops and nonprofits to hopefully recoup some of their expenses over the past year. We hope more will take advantage of this opportunity,” said Commissioner Director Tayfun Selen. He was joined by Commissioners Stephen Shaw and Thomas Mastrangelo, as well as Morris County Chamber of Commerce Vice President Michael Stanzilis and Chester Mayor Janet Hoven, in delivering checks for $15,000 to Barbara Chupick at You’re Not in Kansas Anymore andSusan Nagel of Winky’s Pet Boutique. Both Perry Street businesses in Chester cited expenses they incurred overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic, qualifying them for the maximum grant amount possible under the program. “Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy. As a small business owner, myself, I know how difficult it is running a successful small business in New Jersey. Two years of a pandemic made it that much more
difficult. This program can be the boost many businesses can use to get over the hump as they deal with recovery, staffing and supply chain issues,” said Commissioner Shaw. “We still have millions of dollars not yet committed. I encourage small business owners to apply. There is no cost, so there is nothing to lose. As Mrs. Chupick at You’re Not In Kansas Anymore explained to us, she applied regardless of the fact that she was told by others she would not qualify. She now has $15,000 to invest back into her business.” Susan Nagel at Winky’s said she has touted the program to other Chester businesses, and that she knows many have not yet applied. Operating Winky’s since 2007, she recalled that during the pandemic, the streets of Chester – lined with small businesses – were empty for months. “I built my small business from the ground up, and fortunately I have remained successful. But I know other businesses that closed, and many others continue to suffer. This grant program can make the difference in whether some places can continue, so business owners should check it out, at the very least. Go to the website, read the plain-English information and submit an application,” said Commissioner Mastrangelo. The program, launched on Valentine’s Day under the slogan “Morris County Loves Small Business,” has received 550 applications to date, with 150 already approved and most others still under review. The Commissioners continued on page 13

Most of applications heading for final approval will provide each of the qualified businesses and nonprofits the maximum grant amount of $15,000. While the remaining applications are still being reviewed, the program remains open to new applications. Businesses as well as non-profits are urged to take advantage of the grant offer. There is no cost to apply. The Morris County Board of County Commissioners has committed $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars toward the program, which is designed to provide grants of up to $15,000 to reimburse small businesses and nonprofit organizations for specific pandemic recovery expenses. The expenses must have been incurred on or after March 3, 2021 – a timeline established under ARPA guidelines. The Small Business Grant Program eligibility requirements include, but are not limited to: Business has 25 or fewer full-time employees (or equivalent) In operation since Jan. 1, 2019
Located within Morris County Less than $5 million in sales/revenue Proof of a decline in sales/increased expenses due to the COVID-19 pandemic Read the Qualifications & Apply: morriscountysmallbusinessgrant. com Federal guidelines covering the grant program will determine exactly which expenses qualify for coverage under the grant program and which applications may be approved. The grants are capped at $15,000 per applicant. However, business owners and nonprofits are encouraged to submit applications that include all costs they believe may qualify for the grant, even if the total amount of a single claim exceeds $15,000. A final review may determine that some costs submitted for consideration are not covered under the program guidelines. However, by submitting all expenses that may qualify, applicants increase the possibility of getting the maximum amount of grant dollars possible.

Local Citizens Groups Can Apply for Grants to Protect Environmental and Cultural Treasures in NJ Highlands
L
ocal citizen groups fighting to protect water, other environmental resources, and cultural and historic treasures in northern New Jersey’s Highlands Region are invited to apply for grants up to $5000 through the New Jersey Highlands Coalition’s 2022 Small Grants Program. Applications must be received by June 21, 2022. Grants will be presented on October 12 at the N.J. Highlands Coalition’s 2022 Annual Meeting. “Our Small Grants Program is one of the unique strengths of the Highlands Coalition,” said Julia Somers, Executive Director. “We work at the state and regional levels, but most members of our coalition are from local grassroots groups who are in touch with breaking issues in their communities. They’re our early warning system for threats such as giant warehouses proposed on prime farmland. In addition to giving these groups financial assistance that primes the pump for their own fundraising, we also offer counseling based on our hard-won experience.” Historic projects include “brick-and-mortar” projects for specific historic sites or districts. This is the sixteenth year of the Coalition’s Small Grants Program for environmental projects and the eighth year for projects that protect cultural, historic, and archaeological resources in the Highlands, an important part of the Highlands Regional Master Plan.
Grassroots organizations are defined as nongovernmental organizations with a total annual operating budget of less than $200,000. It is not necessary that the organization be incorporated. To be eligible to apply for a grant, an organization must become a member of the Coalition, but dues are as low as $20 a year. Grants from the Highlands Coalition cannot be used for political purposes. A grassroots group may apply for one or more grants, either environmental, cultural or components of both. But the total amount requested by any one organization cannot exceed $5000. Grant applications should meet at least one of the following five criteria, with the items at the top getting more weight than those below: Projects that focus on developing a stronger Highlands Regional Master Plan (RMP), and/or implementation of the RMP. For example, projects that identify, map, or verify mapped Highlands natural or cultural resources or monitor the implementation of RMP standards at the local level; projects that advocate for and result in municipal conformance with the RMP; Projects that would establish a precedent advancing strong environmental or cultural protection in the Highlands. For example, hiring a consultant to help achieve the most environmentally protective decision by NJDEP,
the Highlands Council, or other regulatory bodies on a Highlands matter, or for meeting local affordable housing needs; Projects that may not help set a precedent, but would assist an organization to fight against a development in the Highlands Region – such as residential, commercial, agribusiness projects, etc. – that seriously threatens or damages natural or cultural resources in the Region; Projects that support capacity building of Highlands Region grassroots organizations, for example, a membership mailing, a strategic planning exercise, a workshop, conference or public educational event, etc.; Projects that educate about Highlands water and resources, and/or increase public awareness of the use and conservation of Highlands water. Applicants are advised to view the full guidelines for the program on the Coalition’s website, particularly for cultural and historic grant components which have very detailed requirements. Go to www.njhighlandscoalition. org. On the menu bar at the top, place your cursor on “Programs,” then click “Small Grants” in the dropdown menu. To join the Coalition, place cursor on “Join Us,” then click on “Organization Membership.” Applicants seeking more information are encouraged to contact Julia Somers at 973-588-7190 or julia@ njhighlandscoalition.org. She welcomes your call.

Paging Your Inner “Nurd”: Long Valley Author’s New Book Reminds Us We Can All Contribute to a Better World
O
By Alexander Rivero ne day about ten years ago, while buying his groceries at Shop Rite, Steve Rampton heard a young man singing over the store’s public address system. The song was badly off key and clearly improvised on the spot, and the lyrics were about nothing more than the simple fact that the bakery department had just restocked its baskets with fresh bread. But what Rampton remembers most about that particular moment was the sheer enthusiasm with which that young man belted out that tune over the scratchy PA speakers, and the rejuvenating energy that pumped through the supermarket in the fleeting moments after the announcement ceased. “I wanted to meet him,” says Rampton, remembering the day. “He was a good looking, nice young man, and I just loved what he did, the life in him. It was contagious, his energy. He was absolutely thrilled to meet a fan, and we chatted for a little bit.” Several months later, Rampton was shocked to learn the tragic news: it turned out that this same young man—star student, college bound, handsome, and with an overflowing sense of mirth—took his own life. Rampton, a Vanderbilt University graduate and former Naval officer, recalls this particular anecdote when reflecting on what it was that inspired him to write his new book, Alpha Nurd: The Historical Revolution of Nerds/ Nurds, published in January by Lifeword Publishing. The book itself is a reflection on some of the more dynamic,
iconoclastic, and misunderstood figures throughout humanity’s complex history, and a call to arms to anyone who for whatever reason doubts that they cannot make a lasting and meaningful contribution to their world. “It floored me when I heard that this young man had taken his own life,” says Rampton. “It was a sort of wakeup call for me in this regard, that even though someone may look like they have everything going for them, we never know the private battles they happen to be fighting internally. We just don’t know.” continued on page 17

Paging Your Inner “Nurd”... continued from page 16 While studying at Vanderbilt, Rampton, who always had a fascination with words and wordplay, coined a new word of his own—“nurd.” Rampton’s word obviously traces its roots to the word “nerd”, itself coined by none other than Theodor Seuss Geisel—known around the world as Dr. Seuss—in his book If I Ran the Zoo to describe a fictional zoo creature, not a human. The term itself has evolved since then, suggesting a whole range of attributes in modern usage, from social awkwardness,
Like us on facebook www.facebook.com/mypaperonline.com • Mendham, Morristown, Black River Life • May 2022 • Page 17
to excessive studiousness, and even an uncanny ease in handling electronic gadgetry. The definitional range of the word “nurd”, on the other hand, includes some of the attributes of its dorky derivative, but expands on them in key ways that make the term a unique addition to the lexicon. Most important amongst these key ways is the word’s heroic implication. Indeed, a “nurd” may very well be dorky, or shy, or socially awkward, or excessively passionate about something few others care for. However,
underneath all of these attributes, a nurd acts proactively with his impulses and passions. He follows them regardless of what the naysayers and critics say. A “nurd” always moves forward, always towards their own individual maximization, and the subsequent use of their gift for the benefit of others. “Take Michelangelo,” Rampton says, as he considers some of his own personal favorite nurds. “Obviously an incredible talent. But he was pretty much doing art to pay his bills. Completely misunderstood by most of the people he dealt with on a dayto-day basis. And today, he’s a household name, and for excellent reason. He fought through, continued doing what he was doing, and humanity owes him a great debt for it. Another noteworthy attribute to nurds is their ability to, as Rampton describes, “fly at 30,000 feet,” a reference to their capacity for foresight and overall intelligence. Here, nurds like Albert Einstein, who was lambasted by many of his grammar school teachers as being too stupid to learn, comes to mind, along with physicist Stephen Hawkins, and the famed Alsatian polymath Albert Schweitzer. “Much of what we have today comes
from these great and influential people,” Rampton points out. “The Carnegies, the Rockefellers. They called them robber barons, but they built our world.” Alpha Nurd takes a look at 50 nurds, 25 men and 25 women, throughout the course of human history, all the way up to the present day. “I met Steve Jobs on a cross-country flight, back when the Macintoshes first came out,” remembers Rampton. “I spoke to one of his assistants, who invited me to go and speak to his boss, and I did. After talking to Jobs at length, he told me to give him the name and phone number of the smartest engineer I knew. He was just insatiable, and he always wanted to learn more, to pick people’s brains and feed his own.” Former New York Giants running back Lee Rouson wrote the foreword to the Alpha Nurd, and both he and Rampton are excited to have it out for the public. The duo is available to speak to students of all ages about what it takes to be a real nurd. To contact Steve Rampton, please e-mail him at info@alphanurd.com. Copies of the book are available for sale at www.alphanurd.com, or wherever books are sold.

DEFUNCT BANK BAGS FULL OF OLD MONEY UP FOR GRABS
Callers line up to get bags full of U.S. Gov’t issued Coins and Currency Important: Strict limit of 3 sealed Bank Bags per household will be strictly enforced Here’s what we know about what’s in the defunct Bank Bags
Each bag contains nearly 4 lbs of old money packed by Federated Mint Operators working the Toll-Free Hotlines are bracing for the flood of calls. The reason is the 48hour deadline applies only to readers of this publication. That means heavy Bank Bags bearing the name of one of several now defunct banks, each full of old U.S. Gov’t issued coins and currency are actually being handed over to the general public by Federated Mint beginning at 7:30 am this morning. And here’s the best part. The price drops from $ 649 to $590 per bag for everyone who claims multiple Bank Bags plus free shipping and free handling as long as they call before the deadline ends. But do not forget this. Everyone who misses the 48-hour deadline must pay $849 for each Bank Bag. That means all those who call the Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s publication are getting Bank Bags full of old U. S. silver coins and currency some dating clear back to the early 1900’s and could be worth up to 100 times their face value including the rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollar, the iconic Peace Silver Dollar, Barber Silver Half Dollar, stunning Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars, the scarce Franklin Silver Half Dollar, the Barber Silver Quarter Dollar,
beautiful Standing Liberty Silver Quarter Dollar, magnificent $1 Dollar Silver Certificate Note, $2 and $5 Dollar Red Seal Notes and collectible $2 Notes just to name a few. In fact, the bags weigh nearly four pounds and contain a combination of over 200 U.S. coins and currency notes. That’s why everyone should be taking the max limit of 3 Bank Bags before the deadline ends. “These heavy Bank Bags weigh nearly four pounds and are full of old U. S. coins and currency which is why we’re guessing everyone will be snapping up as many as they can while they still have the chance,” said Federated Mint officials. There’s one thing readers need to know. Only U.S. residents who call the Toll-Free Hotlines before the 48-hour deadline ends are getting the multiple Bank Bag price. “These heavy Bank Bags bearing the name of one of several now defunct banks, each full of U.S. coins and currency some dating clear back to the early 1900’s are impossible to get anywhere. In fact, they’re only being sold off by Federated Mint directly to U.S. residents who call the Toll-Free Order Hotlines printed in today’s publication”, confirmed officials. To make it fair, special Toll-Free Overflow
Hotlines have been set up to ensure all U.S. residents have an equal chance to get them. Operators are scheduled to be on duty beginning with the first calls being accepted at precisely 7:30 am this morning. So many people are expected to call to get these Bank Bags, callers who cannot get through are being urged to call the special Overflow Hotlines printed in today’s publication.
■ TREASURE HUNT: Operators are bracing for the flood of calls. That’s because sealed Bank Bags whose contents, some dating clear back to the 1800’s, are actually being handed over to the general public beginning this morning. Requests for the bags are sure to be overwhelming since they’re known to contain nearly four pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins and currency so there’s no telling what treasures are sealed away inside.
Contents date clear back to early 1900’s
U.S. Gov’t issued Silver coins, rare Indian Head coins, scarce Buffalo coins, old Wheat Cents - Silver Certificate, Red Seal Notes and more found inside “Breaking the seal of one of these Bank Bags is like stepping back in time,” s a i d Laura A. Lynne, Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint. That’s because you just don’t find Bank Bags like these or pick them up at a defunct bank. Records confirm the origin of each Defunct Bank Bag can be traced back to vaults at the Federated Mint where they were
loaded with a combination of over 200 U.S. coins and currency notes some dating clear back to the early 1900’s and then securely sealed for good. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through each Bank Bag. But you better believe at just $ 649 these Bank Bags are a steal. And it gets even better. The price drops clear down to $ 590 for all those who
take multiple bags. And here’s the best part. Each of these Bank Bags bearing the name of one of several now defunct banks, each full of U. S. Gov’t issued coins and currency some dating clear back to the early 1900’s and could be worth up to 100 times their face value are actually being handed over to U.S. residents who call the TollFree Hotlines listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. As Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint, I get paid to let the general public know when U.S.
coins and currency are up for grabs. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to turn over these heavy Bank Bags full of old money to the general public — Everyone wants to know how much the Bank Bags are worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each Bank Bag weighs nearly four pounds and contains a rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollar and just this one coin alone could be worth R1073R-1

up to 100 times its face value,” confirmed Lynne. The only thing readers of todays publication need to do to get the multiple bag price is call the Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. Do not miss the deadline. That’s because the Bank Bag fee has been set for $849 for residents who miss the 48hour deadline. So it’s
important for U.S. residents to call the TollFree Hotlines before the deadline ends. Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the U.S. coins and currency. Now any U.S. resident who calls the Toll-Free Order Hotlines gets to claim the Bank Bags for themselves and keep all the U.S. coins and currency found inside. Just be sure to call right away because the deadline ends 48 hours from today’s publication date.
Deadline set to claim Bank Bags full of old money Everyone’s heard the saying “the early bird catches the worm.” Well that old saying certainly rings true today. That’s because heavy Bank Bags bearing the name of one of several now defunct banks, each full of valuable U.S. Gov’t issued coins and currency some dating clear back to the early 1900’s and could be worth up to 100 times their face value are actually being handed over to U.S. residents who call the Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s publication. But there is one catch, readers of today’s publication only have 48 hours to call to get the multiple Bank Bag price. That’s why operators manning the Toll-Free Order Hotlines are bracing for a flood of calls beginning at 7:30 am this morning. So if you want to get your hands on these
Bank Bags weighing nearly four pounds containing a combination of over 200 U.S. coins and currency notes, you better hurry to avoid future regret. And here’s the best part. The Bank Bag fee drops from $649 to just $ 590 per bag for everyone who claims multiple Bank Bags plus free shipping and free handling as long as they call before the 48-hour deadline ends. So you don’t want to miss the deadline because everyone who does must pay $849 for each Bank Bag. Operators are scheduled to be on duty beginning with the first calls being accepted at precisely 7:30 am this morning. But with so many people expected to call to get the Bank Bags, callers who cannot get through are being urged to call the special Overflow Hotlines printed in today’s publication.
LIMITS ENFORCED BEGINNING WITH FIRST CALLS AT 7:30 AM TODAY
How to get the Bank Bags full of U.S. Gov’t issued Money Phone lines are expected to be busy, so special Overflow Hotlines have been set up to handle all the calls. That’s because beginning at 7:30 am this morning Federated Mint is handing over sealed Bank Bags bearing the name of one of several now defunct banks, each full of old U.S. Gov’t issued coins and currency to the general public. Please read the following questions and answers before calling the Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s publication. QUESTION: Who gets the Bank Bags? ANSWER: Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the Bank Bags full of old U.S. coins and currency some issued clear back in the early 1900’s. Now any U.S. resident who calls the Toll-Free Order Hotlines gets to claim the Bank Bags for themselves and keep all the U.S. coins and currency found inside. QUESTION: How much are the Bank Bags worth? ANSWER: It’s impossible to say. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but here’s why everyone will be rushing to claim the Bank Bags while they still can. Nobody has knowledge of the dates or mint marks of the U.S. coins and currency inside the Bank Bags, and that is what determines collector
value. But what we do know is after the Bank Bags were loaded from Federated Mint vaults with a combination of over 200 U.S. coins and currency notes they were securely sealed for good. That means there’s no telling what treasures could be found inside these Bank Bags. So you better be-
lieve the Bank Bags are worth every penny, since there’s no telling how much just one collectible coin alone could be worth in collector value. QUESTION: Will the 48-hour deadline be strictly enforced? ANSWER: Yes. Unfortunately thousands of U.S. residents will miss
■ OLD MONEY: Beginning at 7:30 am this morning sealed

the deadline set by Federated Mint to claim the money. That means the Bank Bags are up for grabs and now any reader of today’s publication who calls the Toll-Free Hotlines gets to claim the Bank Bags full of money for themselves and keep all the U.S. coins and currency found inside. The price for each Bank Bag loaded with nearly four pounds of rarely seen U.S. silver coins of all denominations, rare Indian Head coins, scarce Buffalo coins, old Wheat Cents – Silver Certificate Note, Red Seal Notes and more has been set at $ 849 for all those who miss the deadline, but for those who beat the 48-hour deadline the Bank Bag fee is $649 and the best part is all those who claim multiple Bank Bags cover just $590 plus get free shipping and free handling as long as they call the Toll-Free Hotlines before the deadline ends.
48-HOUR DEADLINE: The multiple Bank Bag price will only be honored for the next 48 hours The Bank Bag fee is set at $849 for those who miss the 48-hour deadline, but for those who beat the deadline the single bags are $649 and just $590 for multiple bags as long as calls are received before the 48-hour deadline ends.

Mendham’s Colin Jefferys Mastering Art at Young Age
W
By Megan Roche hen you meet 11 year old Colin Jefferys, he is ready to tell you all about his paintings. The young boy has a true passion for the medium, proudly showing off his artwork around his home in Mendham. Jefferys first took a painting class after his mom became friendly with a local gallery owner. From there, painting has truly taken up residence in Colin’s heart. “There was a small art gallery in the building where my mom worked. She was friendly with the owner who is a local artist. When she asked about art lessons for me, she was initially told ‘no, he’s too young.’ After seeing a picture I had drawn, she agreed to one lesson. I was 6 when I had my first lesson,” Jefferys said. After that first lesson, Colin was hooked. Now five years after that first lesson, the Jefferys home is filled with colorful artwork, many of which look professionally done. For the 11 year old, each of his paintings are special to him. “I’ve painted dozens of paintings and like them all for different, special reasons. My favorite paintings are the snow owl, which took about 2 months. It was my first pastel which I did when I was 8. I also love the pastel of my puppy Cassie which I painted at age 11, The Mountains which took about 3 months at the age of 8, and The Sailboat was my first painting at age 6,” Jefferys shares. Sitting in front of his canvas allows him to immerse himself in art, quiets his mind, and allows him to recreate the world as he sees it. “Painting is relaxing and entertaining. I like to be able to

look at a scene or a picture & recreate it on canvas, as I see it through my own eyes,” Jefferys says. Still loving painting today, Jefferys happily encourages kids and adults alike to get involved in the arts. “Don’t be shy! Look at something appealing to you and recreate it on canvas. Just do it,” Jefferys says excitedly. The 11 year old is supported by his family and friends, but all his creations come from him alone. When asked about his inspirations, he proudly claims himself. “Me. Even though my family supports, encourages and is so proud of me...I am really self motivated,” Jefferys said. For Jefferys, sitting with his paints and easel provides him hours of happiness. Still an 11 year old boy, he’s not sure if art is what he wants to do for a career, but it will always be

IMPLANT DENTISTRY Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants. After careful examination, Dr. Chiu decided she would need very extensive bone repair in her sinuses, done in stages to allow her to have implants placed. This could take two years, because she is already wearing a removable denture. It interferes with the normal bone repair process in the other areas of her upper jaw. That’s why planning ahead is crucial when it comes to a treatment of an implant-supported fixed bridge, especially before the teeth are extracted. Often times, a lot of the “prep” work is done while a couple of teeth remain in the mouth to hold up a fixed temporary appliance. This allows for a faster healing time and more optimal placement of implants to support a fixed bridge. Come and visit Dr. Chiu, who has placed and restored implant-supported fixed
and removable prosthesis for many years. Your comfort and convenience are always Dr. Chiu’s top priorities. To know more about these procedures, please call (973) 377-0224. Morris County is Again Ranked “Healthiest” in New Jersey
M
orris County has been ranked again as the No. 1 healthiest county in New Jersey in an annual, national study released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. “This is wonderful and welcome news, and I think we earned it. The report says Morris County ranked very well on many factors, such as a long life-expectancy, high education levels and opportunities for social associations, while having some of the lowest rates in New Jersey of unemployment, violent crime and child poverty,” said Tayfun Selen, Director of the Morris County Board of County Commissioners. The “2022 County Health Rankings,” a national study of counties in all 50 states, annually places Morris County at the top of its list. Leading community factors examined in the study are crime, education, environment, financial success, disease and mortality rates, lifestyle habits and the availability of nutritional foods, medical care and opportunities to exercise. “The County Health Rankings model illustrates a broad vision for health. The model shows that policies and programs at the local, state, and federal levels play an important role in shaping health factors that in turn, influence a community’s health outcomes. By implementing strategies that target the specific health challenges of a community, there is an opportunity to influence how long and how well people live,” the report notes. The Commissioners celebrated the report, adding that the No. 1 ranking is a product of decades of work by committed public servants and residents throughout the county. “We’re naturally appreciative and proud of this continuous top ranking as the healthiest county in New Jersey. Most people who live here already know we are one the best places anywhere to work, raise a family and live, and that did not happen by chance,” said Commissioner Deputy Director John Krickus. “Morris County can point to generations of residents who have worked and pursued opportunities for themselves and their children by increasing the quality of education, creating a strong economy and employment opportunities, leading New Jersey in open space preservation and with the number one county park system.” The Board of County Commissioners cited a few recent pursuits undertaken to maintain the public health, including: Continued protection of open space, 17,682 acres to date, and enhancement of the largest county park system in New
Jersey, with over 20,394 acres of parkland, 38 recreational facilities and more than 253 miles of trails. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, residents took refuge there, with park and trails visitation increasing fourfold. Long term investments in education, specifically the County College of Morris and the Morris County Vocational School District to enhance skills development, continuously improve the career opportunities and incomes of the local labor force, and to attract business investments. The MCVSD will be expanded by 30 percent after construction begins this year on the district’s new Career Training Center on the college campus, which is designed to provide students and adults the technical skills demanded by the state’s leading industry clusters. Morris County is consistently ranked as having the lowest or second lowest unemployment rate because of its businessfriendly relationship with leading employers and the educational and employment opportunities created here. Morris County’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was heralded as a model in New Jersey by state officials and financial rating houses alike • emergency management leaders were recognized for their strategic distribution of personal protection equipment, as well as their successful set up and operation of a regional vaccination center and local testing sites • the county launched several programs to assist the county’s most vulnerable populations with access to food, shelter, healthcare, vaccines and testing • the commissioners formed a task force to continuously examine the economic and financial impact of the pandemic, resulting in rating houses continuously maintaining Morris County’s AAA rating. “We are proud to be ranked number one in the state. When human services, public health and healthcare collaborate, there is greater opportunity to identify and address social determinants of health at the local level, and promote health equity” said Laura O’Reilly Stanzilis RN, Executive Director of the North Jersey Health Collaborative, who also sits on the Morris County Human Services Advisory Council and works with area nonprofits. The national report concluded that such factors as employment opportunities and resulting income directly impacts the type of health factors that led to Morris County’s top ranking. It also stated that local, state and federal policies and programs can have continued on page 23

Washington Township Plans Memorial Day Ceremony
“Healthiest” in New Jersey... continued from page 22 a major impact on the overall health of a community. “There is a wide range of policies, programs, systems, and environmental changes that can make a difference locally. Some interventions target individual behaviors, such as influencing dietary choices, exercise levels, or alcohol consumption. Other strategies try to tackle systems and structures, such as enhancing opportunities for education, stimulating economic development, and increasing neighborhood safety,” the report states. Celebrating 50 Years
“Health factors represent things that, if modified, can improve length and quality of life. They are predictors of how healthy our communities can be in the future. The four health factor areas in the model include Health Behaviors, Clinical Care, Social & Economic Factors, and Physical Environment. Health outcomes represent how healthy a county is right now. They reflect the physical and mental well-being of residents through measures representing the length and quality of life typically experienced in the community,” the report states.

dults who feel good, eat right and exercise regularly may feel as though annual wellness visits are unnecessary, but nothing could be further from the truth. Data from the Office for National Statistics indicates that, for most cancers, one- and five-year survival rates are significantly higher if the cancer is detected early. But many cancers do not exhibit symptoms in their early stages, or if they do, produce only mild symptoms that do not compel adults to visit their physicians. As a result, annual wellness visits may serve as the only opportunity for physicians
to uncover cancers before they reach advanced stages, where survival rates tend to be much lower. During annual physicals, women may receive routine pelvic exams and pap tests, while men may be tested for colon cancer and prostate cancer. Skipping these visits allows cancers more time to spread, thus complicating treatment plans and potentially reducing survival rates. Annual physicals also may uncover certain factors, such as an unhealthy weight or skin issues like moles, that could be risk factors for cancer or initial warning signs that the disease is present.

Feet ‘N Beyond of New Jersey of Hackettstown Celebrates 15 Years Dedicated to Foot Health
D
By Steve Sears r. Helene T. Nguyen of Hackettstown’s Feet ‘N Beyond of New Jersey tells a painful story. “It’s touched me and to this day,” she says. “I had a 92-year-old patient that came in because of her foot deformity, which were bunions and hammertoes. Her doctor was not clear on the foot procedure or a traditional way to correct her foot problem and told her to live with it. And she’s very active at 92. She drove herself, came to see us, and said, ‘Can you do something for me?’ She even had her shoes cut out to accommodate the bunion!” Dr. Nguyen “felt” and saw both the woman’s emotional and physical pain. “The two pains collided,” she says. “That’s really how I feel about the whole, entire foot health care overall. With the medicine and techniques we have, we have the solutions. The patient doesn’t have to go under anesthesia, no hardware, and virtually low risk. Patients even walk the same day as their procedure.” Dr. Nguyen and her husband, Dr. Yong J. Zhu, opened Hackettstown’s Feet ‘N Beyond in 2007. The practice recently celebrated its 15th anniversary. With Feet ‘N Beyond, the concern is, yes, proper care of a patient’s foot ailment and they do it with the safest, minimally invasive, most effective, and innovative techniques available. That’s the “feet” end. However, there is the previously-mentioned emotional side as well. The “beyond” is Drs. Nguyen and Zhu taking the time to get to know the patient, asking what the patient does with their feet, when their pain arises and how often, and what the foot ailment prevents them from doing? “This is something that has always been the hallmark of what we do in our office and in our practice,” Dr. Nguyen says. “Our mission is to listen to the patient. Coming from a medical background, I’m a surgeon, and when I see a patient with a foot problem, I can do so many things. But is that
really what the patient wants? That’s where there’s a disconnect in the relationship between doctors and patients. That’s not how it’s supposed to be; we’re supposed to be working together. I tell patients, ‘It takes two to tango’.” The foot care duo, fellow New York Podiatry Medical School graduates and parents of one son, 7-year-old Nathan, initially started out doing work with a local hospital, and then started Feet ‘N Beyond as a part-time practice, which has since grown into full-time endeavor the past five years. The unveiling of the Mountain Avenue location opened a lot of opportunities to help the community. “We’re on a very busy street in Hackettstown, and that’s how and why I got involved with the Hackettstown Business Improvement District from a community perspective,” Dr. Nguyen says. “We offer different events; one example is free foot screenings just to help people. There are so many myths, so many misconceptions that are untrue, and we kind of demystify a lot of medical issues that involve feet. We like to educate the community, and that’s what we’ve tried to do. Part of our mission is to educate patients that there is a solution, that there are options.” Regarding the rest of the Feet ‘N Beyond team, which Dr. Nguyen says she and Dr. Zhu rely on greatly, there is a fondness. These folks have been on the journey as well. “We always appreciate past staff members and current staff members,” Dr. Nguyen states gratefully. “We appreciate that they are here to help us to care for people and are aligned with our vision.” Feet ‘N Beyond of New Jersey has their patient’s both good foot health and overall happiness in mind. The practice offers hope to patients who want to live minus foot deformity and pain. “We have our foot structure from our parents, our grandparents, and when it gets to us, now we have a choice to decide how to take care of it, to be healthy,” Dr. Nguyen says.

And since 2007, the answer is available for Hackettstown and the communities nearby. “There is a solution and that’s why Dr. Zhu and I made the decision to have in-office procedure suite. Performing minimally invasive techniques and to be able to get the patient back to a better quality of life is key. These modern foot transformation solutions allow patients to continue to support their
family as well as can play with their kids and grandkids. There is a solution.” Feet ‘N Beyond of New Jersey is located at 188 Mountain Avenue in Hackettstown. Msgr. John Hart Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Ordination
M
By Steve Sears sgr. John Hart, current Pastor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Parish in Morristown, looks back on that special day in 1981. “I was ordained a priest on May 9, 1981 by Bishop (Frank J.) Rodimer. I was ordained at the Church of the Annunciation in Wayne, New Jersey, which is where I served as a deacon – I was ordained a deacon in 1980 – and that was Mother’s Day weekend.” He adds, “I think at the heart of it is a sense of gratitude to God,” Msgr. Hart says. “What motivated me was gratitude to God for having a wonderful mom and dad, and a wonderful family, and it was out of gratitude to God that I wanted to be a priest. I thank God for everything that God has given me. It begins and ends with gratitude.” Msgr. Hart’s first Mass was celebrated at Saint Phillips Parish in Clifton, with a follow up dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall. “It’s hard to believe,” he says. “Looking at it now, it’s gone by quickly. I just can’t really believe it. God has been very, very good to me, and I’ve been blessed.” As Msgr. Hart’s 40th year as a priest comes to a close, a celebratory Mass and reception was held on May 15, 2022 at Assumption Parish. Msgr. Hart was born in Brooklyn and first attended Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in that borough. A nun, the teacher of his third grade class, said, “God is calling some of you to the priesthood and religious life, and if God calls, you should answer.” He pondered her words. “I liked going to church at Saint Michael’s, and I wanted to be a priest
because I wanted to help people. And that’s what I thought at that time. And then I just kept on thinking about it as I grew up.” Msgr. Hart moved with his family to Clifton, New Jersey when he was in the fifth grade, and he worshipped at Saint Phillips Parish. In the parish bulletin, he noticed an ad for Neumann Preparatory School in Wayne. His parents, sensing his desire to serve God, encouraged him to enroll there. After a great high school experience, he applied to Seton Hall University and attended its seminary, and completed his studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington. Msgr. Hart was first assigned to Corpus Christi Parish in Chatham, and in 1987 was also named to the Diocesan Tribunal, on which he still serves. After Corpus Christi Parish, he served at both Saint Ann’s and Saint Christopher’s parishes in Parsippany, studied Canon Law in Ottawa, Canada from 1988 – 1990, served as Bishop Rodimer’s Secretary from 1990 – 1996, then served as pastor at Saint Cecilia’s Parish in Rockaway for 13 years, and while there he was named Administrator of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in the same town. He also served as Chancellor of the Diocese of Paterson from 1999 - 2005, and was a member of the Diocesan Review Board. He was afterwards appointed Chairperson of the Presbyteral Council and Chair of the Diocesan Theological Commission, has been pastor of Assumption Parish since 2009, and since September, 2012 has been Diocesan Director of Personnel. Msgr. John Hart’s life as a priest has been one of wonderful service to God and his flock. He wouldn’t have it

any other way. “As a priest, I’m very, very blessed to serve God’s people. I would do it all over again, and I’m grateful to God.”

A Brunch Spread... continued from page 26 1/2-1 teaspoon chili powder 1 tomato, finely chopped 8 eggs 1/2 cup milk 4 large tortillas 1 cup spinach 1 1/2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled 1/4 cup cilantro 1 avocado lime wedges (optional) hot sauce (optional) Remove steak from packaging and set aside 10 minutes. Once steak reaches room temperature, heat pan over medium-high heat. Rub steak with oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook until medium-rare, approximately 3-4 minutes each side. Remove from pan and cover loosely with tinfoil to rest 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and add splash of oil. Add onion; cook 1 minute. Add red bell pepper and mushrooms; cook 1 minute. Add cumin, paprika and chili powder; stir through. When veggies are tender (about 2
minutes), add tomato and cook until soft. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. In large bowl, whisk eggs, milk and salt and pepper, to taste. Heat pan to medium heat and add splash of oil. Pour egg mixture into pan and cook, lifting and folding eggs until thickened and no visible liquid egg remains. Do not stir constantly. Lay tortillas on flat surface or plate. In center of tortilla, add cooked veggies and top with thinly sliced beef. Add handful of spinach, scrambled eggs, crumbled feta, cilantro and avocado. Fold bottom of tortilla and roll. Serve with lime wedges and hot sauce, if desired. Dine on Deliciously Sweet Doughnuts Brunch is never complete without something sweet to cap off the morning feast, and doughnuts are often the perfect complement to an array of main courses. These Lemon Ricotta Doughnuts pair the bite-sized morsels with lemon curd (if that suits your style) for a sweet-tart combination. They’re made using Domino Golden Sugar, which is made from pure
cane sugar and is less processed than white granulated sugar, as one you can always trust in your favorite recipes. It works cupfor-cup just like white sugar but with a golden color and distinct hint of molasses flavor. Visit dominosugar.com to find recipes perfect for entertaining and celebrating throughout the year. Lemon Ricotta Doughnuts Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 7 minutes Doughnuts: Vegetable oil, for frying 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 3/4 cups Domino Golden Sugar, divided 2 tablespoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons lemon zest 5 large eggs 1 3/4 cups ricotta cheese 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract Lemon Curd (optional): 1 stick unsalted butter, softened 1 1/2 cups Domino Golden Sugar 2 large eggs 2 egg yolks 4 lemons, zest and juice only
1/8 teaspoon salt To make doughnuts: In large saucepan, preheat oil to 350 F. Prepare cookie sheet with paper towel to drain doughnuts once out of hot oil. In bowl, mix flour, 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Add lemon zest, eggs, ricotta cheese and vanilla extract; mix until well combined. Use ice cream scoop to scoop small amounts dough into oil, 4-5 pieces at a time. Fry each batch until golden brown, about 7 minutes. Keep oil at or near 350 F; if oil is too hot, doughnuts will turn golden brown but centers may still be raw. Remove from oil and drain in paper towel. Repeat with remaining dough. While still hot, toss doughnuts with remaining sugar. To make lemon curd, if desired: In large bowl of stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and egg yolks, one at a time. Add lemon zest, lemon juice and salt. Transfer mixture to saucepan and cook at low-medium heat until thick and creamy, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let cool before serving with doughnuts.

A
lmost every get together – whether it’s family, friends or neighbors – always has one dish that’s the star of the show time after time. It’s usually a staple dish, but that doesn’t always mean it’s the main course. It can be a side dish that pairs with almost everything else on the table. The kids gobble it up, and the adults ask “Can I have that recipe?” Side dishes can be some of the most enjoyed foods at every meal. There is a large variety of options and a multitude of possibilities and variations of almost each and every classic side dish. There are a lot of elements that go into making a stellar side, however. It must have lots of flavor and the seasoning needs to be on point. Next time you’re looking for a versatile, delicious side dish nearly everyone will love, try these Horseradish Mashed Potatoes. They have a perfect potato texture and are full of creamy goodness with a horseradish kick to savor. To make these potatoes, start with 2 quarts of water in a large pot. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and 3 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes then boil 15-20 minutes. Reserve 1/2 cup of water from the pot.
In a separate mixing bowl, whisk 16 ounces of sour cream, 1/4 cup of horseradish, salt and pepper. Add butter to warm potatoes then mash. Add sour cream mixture, chives and reserved water halfway through mashing. Once you have the desired consistency, your potatoes are ready to serve with additional butter chives. Morristown Artist’s Illustrations Bring Residential and Commercial Properties to Life
H
By Jillian Risberg er stylized drawings of storefronts, homes, cars, restaurants and a variety of retailers pop off the canvas, to the delight of mixed media enthusiasts in Central Jersey. “Molly’s attention to detail was second to none. The artwork I asked her to complete brought tears to the eyes of the business I commissioned (it) for,” a client says they were thrilled and plan to hang it in their establishment. Molly Brusser offers architectural (exterior/interior perspective) illustrations: houses, rooms, commercial buildings, streetscapes located in Hunterdon, Warren, Morris, and Somerset Counties. They have turned into meaningful keepsakes. “If I sell a portrait of a restaurant or house I want it to be a commemoration of what the building was,” says Brusser. “Like a photograph, it captures a moment in time. For commercial, I really try to get in the character of the building, to show the actual usage of it.”
In off time from her art studio, the illustrator can be found visiting local thrift shops since she also loves to paint and repurpose furniture and home accents. From selling her designs at flea markets, Brusser branched out to her own website and a realtor friend suggested doing house portraits. “Home decor, interior design, architecture, history of furniture… how do we mesh that together and create a theme I like to term, ‘civilized space,’” the mixed media artist says. “I want to start expanding to commercial clients, hone in on different restaurants in the area. My thinking: ‘why stop at houses.’” Brusser has been pleasantly surprised her creations are resonating with people after a random September 2021 Facebook (ad) posted to multiple groups she’s in took off. “I wasn’t expecting anything,” says the illustrator. “I’d get feedback like: ‘as long as you attach that portfolio piece, your work speaks for itself’ and to have something personalized like that is less common now
because everything is digital.” She originally drew pictures of houses for that realtor friend, who gifted them to clients. “Between October and December alone I got 40 orders (only three were realtors),” Brusser says she usually puts a call to action at the end of ads she writes now. “People say, ’I’m interested,’ or ‘send more information.’ It was people like you and me who just wanted a picture of their house.” For commissions she uses graphite marker and acrylic, but the mixed media artist says everybody thinks it’s watercolor based on her drawing technique. “As long as you know your craft well, you can adapt any medium to what you need,” says Brusser, adding that when it comes to the element of art she enjoys the most — lately her stuff has been very stylized. “So, caricature art because people have told me (my) house pictures are playful, like caricatures of their house, created by man-made environments — as opposed to photo realistic.”
Her art journey started young. Back in daycare, Brusser snuck over to the art center even though they were only allowed to do one station per week. “Since (age) five, I knew I wanted to do continued on page 31

Morristown Artist... continued from page 30 something creative and with the arts,” the illustrator says she uses her professional marketing background to generate sales, and recently completed additional schooling in computer graphics. According to Brusser, there are multifaceted creative fields one can pursue, but most colleges — unless they have an intensive art department — you learn to be an art historian or painter. “So I think it gets a bad rep of ‘you’re not going to be able to do anything’ with (the degree), because schools don’t openly market creative careers,” she says. Then the mixed media artist found Hunterdon County Polytech, in hindsight where she wishes she attended instead of college. They have an intense art pro-
gram geared toward juniors/seniors in high school, with the goal of making them employable. She circled back to art because of its current relevance. “When you study creative disciplines like graphic design, user interface, industrial design — it’s more complex than people think,” says Brusser. The illustrator says architecture teaches her about physical structure, human culture and art history. “My art captures the result of existing human usage and potential capability of buildings and furniture,” Brusser says she loves developing her own business and unique relationships with art aficionados. Our Little World: Mendham Author Pens First Novel
K
By Emily Pirrello aren Winn, a West Morris Mendham High graduate, released her debut novel on May 3rd. “Our Little World” is a riveting story of sisters, secrets, and tragedy. The story takes place in a small fictional town in New Jersey— Hammend, (an anagram for Mendham). Winn has created this incredibly gripping, and tender novel with a world parallel to her own childhood of growing up in Mendham. “I tried a different location for the novel at first, and it just didn’t work, ultimately I chose to stick to my roots.” Although this is a fictitious story, Winn found inspiration from some of her own reallife childhood memories. Winn shared that she had quite an “angelic childhood”. “I had an amazing childhood; tragedy didn’t strike us.” By writing “Our Little World” she was able to insert tragedy into a parallel
childhood of her own. This novel takes place in 1985, Winn “loved the idea of not having technology present, it adds to the suspense. The characters are not privy to information at fingertips, it’s a different experience of learning about tragedy. Growing up in these simpler times, preserves the innocence of youth.” Her inciting incident of little Sally going missing at Deer Chase Lake, is actually inspired from a moment in Winn’s own adolescence. “I was swimming at Sunrise Lake Beach Club, and my mom couldn’t find me. The lifeguards emptied out the lake, I didn’t hear the whistles blow, but followed everyone out of the water. I remember these frantic young lifeguards were gathering all the girls asking my mom if “this is her daughter”. Winn says she’ll never forget the look on her mom’s face when she first reunited with her.
This corresponding scene in “Our Little World” is eerie and engrossing—a parent’s worst nightmare. When speaking with Winn, one is likely in awe of all of her accomplishments. She’s always had two strong passions in life, nursing and medicine and writing and literature. Even when she was a practicing Nurse Practitioner in the ICU, she found ways to incorporate her love of writing by writing the hospital newsletter. After moving to Boston with her husband and starting a family, Winn joined a local writer’s group in 2009, and she is still in the same writer’s goup to this day. She “loves having found a community of writers.” In 2016, Winn decided to take the leap of pursuing her novel, “I had written short stories previously and loved the idea of writing a novel because it would allow me the space to deeper explore complex
character development and relationships.” Winn is also incredibly humble, “I feel so fortunate and lucky to be publishing my book, it’s a lifelong dream.” Publishing a novel is no small feat. What’s next for Winn? She is excited to be working on her next novel which takes place in presentday Boston centered around a group of female friends and their relationships. Be sure to mark your calendars as Winn is traveling from her home in Boston to visit locally in
June. On June 11, at 3:00 p.m, an in-person event will be held at The Bookworm in Bernardsville. No advance
registration is required. For more information on Winn, visit www.karenlwinn. com.

Ten Years Later: Morris County Flood Mitigation Program is a Success
M
orris County’s innovative flood mitigation program hit a milestone in March, turning 10 years old and helping towns to obtain 84 floodprone properties that have been restored to open space. The program, which has operated since 2012 through the Morris County Open Space, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust, supplements state and federal programs by helping towns obtain flood-prone lots from willing sellers. The county funds go directly to the municipalities, which purchase the properties from willing sellers and must maintain the land as public open space. “Ten years ago, our board decided to take a sliver of our tax-payer approved open space dollars and dedicate them to buying out flood-prone properties. Right out of the gate, the program won two environmental awards from the State of New Jersey for its innovation. It hadn’t been done before,” said Stephen H. Shaw, a member of the Morris County Board of County Commissioners and liaison to the Morris County Office of Planning and Preservation, which manages the program. By removing the homes and restoring the properties to open space, the land can better absorb flood waters and protect other nearby properties from flooding. The program also offers communities more open space, helps constantly flooded homeowners move out and even eases burdens on first responders who must occasionally rescue people from their flooded buildings. To date, the program has allocated $9.6 million to obtain properties in eight Morris County towns. The Morris County Flood Mitigation Program has been involved in the purchase of 84 properties, with towns using the county funds in conjunction with other funds from

the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the New Jersey Green Acres/Blue Acres program and, in some cases, municipal contributions. Five of the 84 properties were located in the floodprone Midwood Road section of Lincoln Park, next to the banks of the Pompton River, where a total of 20 homes were purchased, removed and returned to natural lands in recent years. On April 7, that area was under water again after heavy rains hit northern New Jersey, deluging the region and leaving many riverside properties in Morris County flooded. This time, there were 20 less structures underwater along Midwood Road and the river waters were more quickly absorbed. On average, for every $1 spent by the county of flood mitigation, there have been $7 in benefits to the participating towns and county, according to the Office of Planning and Preservation. The Flood Mitigation Program is structured with two basic funding tracks, according to Program Coordinator Virginia Michelin. The Match Program offers up to a 25 percent county match to state and federal buyouts. The CORE Program is designed to catch homes that have fallen through other agency’s funding nets, with Morris County providing up to 75 percent of the acquisition cost. Grant applications are considered by the county Flood Mitigation Committee from municipalities on behalf of willing sellers. Every project is subject to a detailed benefit-cost analysis based on FEMA computer models.
