Chester Borough Police Raise The Bar With Accreditation

By Anastasia Marchese he world is constantly changing and the way that government officials and police officers interface with the community due to these changes needs at times to be analyzed and addressed. That is one of the reasons why Chester Borough Chief of Police David Jara decided to seek accreditation for his department through the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. Back in Sept./Oct. of 2014, Jara initiated the accreditation process. It usually takes a police department around two years to go through the steps required. The Chester Borough Department focused in on what needed to be done and completed it quickly. Due to their hard work and effort they were able to finish the evaluations and reviews in February of this year. In May of this year, the department was officially recognized for this accomplishment during a Council Meeting. Departments going through the accreditation process “usually have one person devoted to it,” said Jara and Sar-

gent Kristen Cebo was the officer spearheading the process for the Chester Borough Department. When asked why Jara sought out the accreditation he responded that he wanted to “make sure we are following the best practices for police. Some of our policies and procedures were outdated.” He said that there were policies that had not been revised since the 1990’s and it was time to reevaluate exactly how the department was handling situations. “It is more clearcut now on how we should operate,” he said. “Every officer knows what to report and what channels we are supposed to go through.” The Chester Borough Police department received a grant of $50,000 to make this possible, through the Morris County Municipal Joint Insurance Fund. The accreditation process is organized by the Rodgers Group which works in conjunction with the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police to organize and manage the accreditation of New Jersey Police Departments. According to the organization's website, “The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) is a professional membership organization serving New Jersey's law enforcement and private security executives.” It also describes the organization's mission as “firmly centered on helping members and their personnel achieve their potential - both as professionals and people.” There are a set of 105 standards that the departments need to follow in order to reach full compliance. The departments have evidence audits as well as personnel reviews by an oversight committee to determine if the standards are being implemented. Chester Borough only had one clerical error sited on their report, a sign that the department is accurately and fully implementing these new procedures. The accreditation needs to be reassessed every three years. The evaluations are done by a team of retired police

W

chiefs and the department needs to keep a certain number of proofs to be checked. According to the NJSACOP website, “Accredited status represents a significant professional achievement. Accreditation acknowledges the implementation of policies and procedures that are conceptually sound and operationally effective.” When a town has an accredited police force it can benefit the town in a number of ways. Accredited departments may qualify for insurance cost reductions, due to the extra training and planning that it requires. Chief of Police David Jara, Sargent Kristen Cebo, and the entire Chester Borough Police force are to be saluted.

Chester School District Wraps Up Forward-Thinking Year

C

By Ashley Bouwense hester School District’s 2015-2016 school year proved to be a successful one, as the district not only saw its talented students make staggering strides in scholastic and athletic endeavors, but it also became the only school district in North America featured in the latest Google Classroom ad campaign. “This year held a number of good mem-

that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning.” Find out more about the program at destinationimagination.org. Chester’s elementary schools, Dickerson and Bragg, were instituted with two new

ories,” Superintendent of Schools Christina Van Woert said. Bragg School’s fifth grade Destination Imagination (DI) Team placed fifth at the Global Finals at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville; the team ranked highest in New Jersey. The sixth grade DI Team placed third in N.J. As explained on the DI website, “The [DI] program is a fun, hands-on system of learning

STEM courses. “[The courses] were hugely popular and introduced our youngest students to the concepts of problem-based learning and STEM,” said Van Woert. “[They] were very successful.” Girls’ athletics also made names for themselves this year: The soccer and cross country continued on next page

There are plans to replace the current windows with more energy efficient ones at Bragg School this winter. When the next school year rolls around, Chester School District is hoping to kick-off its Strategic Planning process, which will help the schools articulate the dreams, hopes and aspirations for its children. “The Chester School District is just a fantastic place to grow, develop and shine as a child and young adult,â€? Van Woert praised. “We have a committed and involved community, a dedicated and energetic faculty and everyone is driven to provide our children with the best educational program possible to help them thrive as young adults and beyond!â€?

Unfortunately, Howard lost Elinor in 2005 but he is very lucky to have an adoring family that includes his step-daughter and husband, and two step-grandchildren and two stepgreat grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Prior to coming to Heath Village, Lindemann founded Lindly & Company in 1949 in Mineola, N.Y. An optical and technical equipment company for illuminated microscopes, Lindly & Company invented the first Narrow Yarn Inspector to inspect yarn for flaws and broken filament in multi-filament line such as nylon and acetate. They were the first to design such equipment. Up until this time, all inspection was done by sight. Lindly invented other equipment for textile quality control as well. All American suture material and all tire cord were inspected on Lindly equipment at one point. They had agents throughout Europe. The company was sold and reorganized in 1998 – the same year he and Elinore came to live at Heath Village. Outside of his successful career, Lindemann had many hobbies and was very active. He helped build several pieces of playground equipment for the Friendship Center, the intergenerational preschool located on the Heath Village campus. He also built furniture and shelving for the Heath House library. As recently as this past March, Lindemann participated in Heath Village’s Grand Re-Opening of its craft shop. As his love was to ski, Lindemann won ski racing medals and is in the 70+, 80+ and 90+ Ski Club. His last ski trip was to Gray Rocks in Canada with his granddaughter and her family at age 92. Lindemann is one of the oldest residents ever to have lived at Heath Village. He is also the oldest living graduate of Lafayette College where he studied engineering and was in the 100th Graduation Class of 1932. He also received his master’s degree from Cornell. Lindemann is a truly a remarkable individual and Heath Village is incredibly lucky that he and Elinor made the decision to come to live here. We can never thank him enough for all his contributions. Washington Township Celebrates Grade-A School Year

By Ashley Bouwense ashington Township School (WTS) District had so many memorable moments this school year—hundreds, in fact—that it was difficult for Superintendent Jeffery Mohre to choose only a few to highlight for this School Wrap-Up story. The 2015-2016 school year proved to be one of innovative programs, student awards, new technologies and looking to an even brighter future for the district. One memorable moment Mohre pointed out was when the district shined “a spotlight on school programs as part of the Board of Education’s (BOE) Board Meetings at Our Schools program. During the gathering, the schools’ principals hosted a meeting where they—along with their students and faculty— presented a school program of their choosing. The BOE learned about art, personal wellness, nutrition and other programs from the array of opportunities for involvement afforded to Long Valley Middle School (LVMS) students.

Some other memorable moments include: LVMS Destination Imagination Team’s trip to this year's Global Finals competition in Knoxville, Tenn.; the art, dance, theater, choral, instrumental and sporting performances student performances; WTS' and Sodexo's third annual Taste of Washington Township Junior Chef's Competition; WTS' Memorial Day observances featuring visits with U.S. Veterans; the district's outstanding, year-long Professional Development series; and the 50th Birthday Celebration of Old Farmers Road School. The culmination of all of these events led to the celebratory eighth grade commencement ceremony June 15, where 318 students graduated from LVMS. The district also added new technologies this year, and Mohre said, “The additions of new technologies are perennial features in our schools. A 3-D laser printer was instituted to the middle school’s STEM program this year from a BASF Science Education Grant. The students received the printer and they

learned about 3-D design and how to print three-dimensional objects. “The power of technology has added a fascinating element to instruction and learning here in the Washington Township Schools, said Mohre. The district’s primary grade levels partnered with the Institute of Multi-Sensory

Education this year to enhance reading education. Forty-two teachers were trained in the art and science of Orton-Gillingham— a method of multi-sensory approach to reading instruction—where educators learned strategies to further enhance their instructional practice. continued on page 15

U.S. Department Of Veteran Affairs Posts Seventh Grader’s Patriotic Poem

by Ashley Bouwense he historical writer Plutarch said that “…poetry is painting that speaks.” Seventh grade Black River Middle School student Michael Giannattusio transformed Plutarch’s colorful metaphor into a reality. Giannattusio’s homework assignment this May was to create something called a Digi Poem. His language arts teacher, Joseph Pizzo, created this assignment based on the class reading, “The Giver,” by Lois Lowry. In the novel, Lowry brings to life a dystopian universe devoid of color. The main character, Jonas, begins to see color as he journeys throughout the novel, which gives him a full, enlightened perspective of his surroundings and the world. A Digi Poem is an original work of poetry presented through technology. Pizzo described the project, “We discussed the importance of color and the prominent place color plays for the main character Jonas. After my students wrote their poems, I gave them the opportunity to use technology to celebrate color in a more vivid manner.”

Giannattusio originally wrote about the colors red and white, but he knew something was missing. Pizzo remembered when Giannattusio approached him with concern: “I don’t have a passion for this. Can I change the poem?” he said. Following Pizzo’s mentorship, Giannattusio knew he wanted his Digi Poem to be about the American flag. “Michael wrote an amazing poem!” Pizzo praised. The poem, “Stars and Stripes,” is a tribute to the nation’s flag. The vivid imagery and profound metaphors both honor the country in a manner that rivals and even surpasses some professional poets’ works. Pizzo told Giannattusio, “This is your best work!” Pizzo knew that “Stars and Stripes” had to be shared outside the walls of Black River. After permission from Giannattusio and his parents to share the poem, Pizzo immediately searched for organizations willing to showcase the work; he wanted Giannattusio to get the recognition his poem deserved.

One of the places Pizzo inquired was the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in Washington, D.C. The reviewer was thrilled with the writing, and wanted Pizzo to author a guest blog to display both the Digi Poem and Pizzo’s explanation of the project that inspired the powerful, patriotic work. The

poem was posted to the blog, “A Salute to ‘Old Glory’ from the Eyes of a 7th Grader: The Poetry of Patriotism,” to commemorate Independence Day 2016. Pizzo praised Giannattusio’s poem in the blog, “He speaks of red as a color that repcontinued on next page

continued from previous page resents ‘The color of hardiness and valor, / A sentinel to safeguard and protect.’ He describes white not ‘as the absence of color’ but ‘a mĂŠlange of colors in opalescent form / Colors dancing around to make one beautiful and pure color.’ He describes blue as ‘The color of vigilance and justice / Freely donating freedom to all.’ In the final stanza of his poem, Michael gives recognition to ‘The morals, / Purity, / Innocence, / Vigilance, / Valor, / Hardiness, / And justice (that) coalesce into a great country.’â€? “It’s important to showcase student work outside the classroom,â€? Pizzo explained. “It gives the student a sense of importance. It shows them language arts is among all of our days. When they see their work inspiring others, it validates them.â€? The seventh grade language arts teacher has taught at Black River Middle School for 42 years and received the 2016 New Jersey Association for Middle Level Education (NJAMLE) Educator of the Year award. Pizzo is always looking to encourage his students in their educational pursuits, and that includes presenting their work outside of the

classroom. “Learning has to be social in order to be significant, Pizzo explained, taking what he learned from the educational psychologist Lev Vygotsky. Pizzo also bases his pedagogy on another educational psychologist, Howard Gardner’s, multiple intelligence theory. “Everyone has genius, he said, quoting from Gardner’s theory. Pizzo meets students at their needs; he works with students to help them create pieces of which they are proud, providing a vehicle for confidence and agency within each child. Pizzo said that Giannattusio is a “terrific kid; he has a “wild sense of humor and a sharp, analytical side. This year, Pizzo directed Giannattusio in the play “Into the Woods Junior, where Giannattusio played the narrator and the comedic Goose That Laid the Golden Egg. Giannattusio and Pizzo have been invited to Congressman Leonard Lance's Westfield office, where Giannattusio will be presented with a flag that has flown over the Capitol. The meeting is scheduled for July 20. To view “Stars and Stripes, visit www.blogs.va.gov.

t a time when many dance studios slow their programs down to compensate for vacations and other summer activities, the Art of Dance Studio, in beautiful downtown Chester, has taken the opposite approach. The Art of Dance continues to offer opportunities for students to experience a variety of summer programs for the pre-professional dancer and the recreational dancer, both young and not so young. Dancing is a fun way for the dancers to spend their summer and stay fit both physically and mentally. It is a great way to break up the monotony of the long hot summer days. The Art of Dance offers weekly classes in tap, ballet, jazz, Irish, and hip-hop for preschooler’s, children and adults. The Boys Only classes in tap and hip hop continue to grow in popularity. The Art of Dance is hosting a stellar line up of faculty for their 16th annual Summer Dance Intensive and Ballet Intensive in July. American Ballet Theater (ABT) season at the Met are teaching a weeklong intensive of ballet that includes partnering, technique and choreography from Romeo & Juliet. While the dancers are receiving the best possible ballet training, these amazing teachers keep it upbeat and positive while challenging the dancers so that they enjoy working hard to accomplish the difficult but beautiful art of ballet. What makes this week of dance different is that these teachers make ballet so much fun. This ballet intensive runs from July 2529 for dancers nine to 19 years old. Guest teachers at the Dance Intensive include an incredible faculty of teachers direct from the Broadway stage. Michael Cusamano – An American in Paris / Chicago; So You Think You Can Dance Tour, Alexia Meyer season 12; and Jon Bond from the Netherlands Dance Company, touted as the best dance company in the world. Bond is formerly of Cedar Lake Contemporary Dance Co. who has a way of getting dancers to move in a new and expressive way and shed their inhibitions and

is a favorite particularly with the teenagers. The Art of Dance, which is known for its great tap dancers and strong tap program is excited to welcome Sarah Savelli, just off a tour with Savion Glover. It’s amazing to see how she shares her knowledge with the students and manages to get the young dancers to move their feet at lightning speed.

Also joining the intensive line up are current faculty members Jen Savelli-Montaldi who appeared in six Broadway shows including Spider Man and Boy from Oz and a former Rockette; and Linsey O’Neal of Dana Foglia Dance Company. New this year is Legally Blonde Musical continued on page 15

"'03 41&$* # Vernon Twp. $269,900 This Bi-Level, renovated in 2016, is in move-in condition, and is waiting for the right family to call it Home. Visitors are greeted by a patio-block walkway past a cozy gazebo to the front door. The house features a new eat-in country kitchen with granite island and counters and new stainless-steel appliances. There are 2 full and 1 half bathrooms, all new. New carpeting was laid in each of the bedrooms and in the living room and family room. The dining area has a slider to a new deck. The kitchen, dining area and hallways have gleaming hardwood floors. The house is centrally air conditioned, and is fueled by oil, served by an above-ground tank (an underground was removed in 2014 and certified by the town). The home is situated on nearly 1 acre of park-like grounds complete with gazebo, and wishing well.

Grade-A School Year Scholastic achievements abound at WT schools, Mohre explained. Two student award ceremonies were held this spring—one for the elementary students and one for the middle school students— to celebrate students’ gifts in the arts, sciences, linguistics and mathematics. While there are a multitude of memorable moments to look back upon, there are exciting initiatives to look forward to in the upcoming school year. Mohre said the district should bring two solar fields to utilize the sun’s energy for LVMS and Benedict A. Cucinella School. The district will also launch its Next Generation Science Curriculum at the middle school, unveil a new standardsbased report card in the elementary schools, continue its literacy partnership with the University of Pennsylvania, further enhance teacher skillset in teaching and reading through Orton-Gillingham literacy training and update WiFi districtwide. “Here in the Washington Township Schools, we enjoy tremendous support from the members of our school community whose devotion to our town’s children serve as the cornerstone for school success,” praised Mohre. “From students’ parents, to our faculty… our administration, board of education, public safety personnel and the youth organizations who support our schools in countless ways, we are indeed fortunate to have so many positive forces helping to provide for and guide the youth of our community. I feel great pride knowing that our primary focus will continue to be on the development of healthy, well-rounded young people in our community.”

he Morris County Agriculture Development Board this week permanently preserved a 43-acre nursery products farm on Flocktown Road in Washington Township owned by the estate of the Scheller family. The purchase of the development easement on this property by the Morris County CADB restricts the land from non-agricultural uses, thus permanently preserving the farm. It is the 128th preserved farm in Morris County and the 74th preserved agricultural property in Washington Township, according to Katherine Coyle, director of the Morris CADB. The Scheller Farm is located within a half-mile of four preserved farms and adjacent to Washington Township’s Cataract Park. The easement purchase was made in conjunction with a grant from the State Agriculture Development Committee, which provided 55 percent of the $889,065 acquisition price, or $491,397 to preserve the farm. In contrast to open space preservation, the agricultural landowner retains ownership of, and may even choose to sell, the preserved farmland. But the land retains a deed restriction ensuring that it cannot undergo non-farm development. Agricultural development of the farm is permitted and the type of farming activity can change in the future.

toric Preservation Trust Fund provided the remaining $397,668. “This is terrific program that has over the past three decades been very effective in preserving Morris County agricultural roots, and effectively creating a permanent and viable agricultural business district in the county,’’ said Freeholder Christine Myers, the county governing board’s liaison on preservation matters. The farm was owned by George Scheller Sr. and his son George Scheller Jr. Both passed away a few years ago and their estate had to resolve legal issues before preservation could proceed. The farm has an interesting history. Many years ago, the property was owned and used as a hunting preserve and also once served as a back lot film studio for Thomas Edison. After the county purchased the development easement on Wednesday, the Scheller estate then sold the newly preserved farm to the Fleming family, which currently operate a Christmas tree farm and plans to expand production to this property.

Acupuncture Treatment For Many Common Addictions

ack in the mid-1970’s a medical doctor at the Lincoln Hospital in NYC modified an existing system of auricular (ear) acupuncture into a technique for the treatment for drug addictions as an alternative to methadone. The acupuncture treatment was extremely effective and became known as the “NADA protocol.” NADA - is Spanish for “nothing” and is also an acronym for the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. NADA was established in 1985 by Dr. Michael Smith and others promoting the integration of the protocol in the treatment of addiction. Originally the NADA protocol developed from just electrical stimulation of the Lung point in the ear to the protocol that exists today which consists of 5 acupuncture points on the outer surface of the ear. The points used in the NADA protocol are: Sympathetic, Shen Men, Kidney, Liver, and Lung all of which are located on the Ear!

Addicts treated with the NADA protocol report an overall sense of well-being with many stating that they feel “energized” and “lighter” and most importantly feel “much calmer.” Over the years I have used the NADA protocol to help a woman get off methadone, which is almost impossible without acupuncture treatment, as well as alcohol and cigarette addictions. I add electrical stimulation to many of the points stated above depending on their addiction. In addition to NADA, I often add body acupuncture points as well. Many studies have been done on the efficacy of the NADA protocol. The following are a few of the benefits reported by patients as well as their health care providers: more optimistic attitudes about detoxification and recovery; reduced cravings; reduced anxiety; better retention in drug treatment programs; better sleep; and reduced need for pharmaceuticals.

Although the NADA protocol is a tremendous help in detoxification, it should be an adjunctive treatment with other modalities such as counseling and support groups. I don’t feel the need for counseling with cigarette cessation but definitely with alcohol and drug addiction. The US Department of Justice BJA Drug Court Technical Assistance Project, together with the American University’s School of Public Affairs in DC, have published a review of evidence regarding the use of NADA as an adjunct treatment within addictions programs. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals also support the adjective use of the NADA protocol for heroin, alcohol, and cocaine addictions treatment (Bergdahl et al., 2012, Santasiero & Neussle, 2007, to name a few. Please contact Skyland’s Acupuncture at 908-875-3643 for more information on how Acupuncture treatments may help with your addictions.

xercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Many people establish bold fitness goals with a mind toward getting in shape. It’s tempting to jump right in, especially when friends or relatives reach their own fitness goals. However, inactive men and women risk injury when diving right in and not taking a gradual approach to fitness and weight loss regimens. To reap the most rewards from exercise, take the proper precautions and follow these guidelines. • Speak with your doctor before beginning an exercise regimen. Get medical clearance before you begin a new exercise regimen, especially if you have any preexisting medical conditions. Your doctor may suggest certain modifications that can reduce strain on certain parts of the body or advise you on the most effective activities for people with your condition. Healthy individuals may be cleared outright and can begin their fitness regimens immediately. It’s also wise to inform doctors of fitness plans and goals so they can help track your

progress. • Don’t eat heavy meals before exercising. Avoid large meals before engaging in strenuous physical activity. A light, healthy snack gives you a little fuel without affecting your ability to exercise. After eating, the body diverts blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract to aid with digestion. Exercising while this blood flow is centralized in the gastrointestinal tract may cause muscle cramps or generalized weakness. Nutrition experts at the University of California, Los Angeles, say that people who exercise strenuously on a full stomach also may experience reflux, hiccups, nausea, and vomiting. Wait at least an hour after eating full meals to exercise. • Warm up. It’s important to warm up muscles before beginning a workout. Stretches, light movements and range of motion exercises can improve flexibility and prepare the body for more to come. If muscles aren’t fully stretched and warm, injuries like strains and tendon tears may occur. Take the time to warm up; otherwise, you may find yourself on the

Get Fit The Smart Way

sidelines. • Wear the appropriate equipment. Invest in quality athletic shoes and other equipment made for the activity you will be performing. The right equipment can help prevent injury. Athletic shoes that fail to provide adequate support can increase your risk of injury. Good shoes do not have to cost a fortune, as there are plenty of brands that will work quite well. If you need suggestions, discuss your exercise regimen and goals with a podiatrist or orthopedist. Orthotic inserts can be used to modify footwear and provide additional support. You also may need equipment specific to a given activity. For example, wrist supports and quality gloves are essential for kickboxing classes. Speak with a trainer or gym employee if you need assistance. • Take weather into consideration. Ice, snow, rain, and wind can make jogging or other outdoor activities more challenging, if not dangerous. Always exercise caution when your workout regimen involves exercising outdoors. Stay indoors if you see thunder and lightning. • Stay hydrated. The Better Health Channel of the Victoria State Government says a person can lose around one and a half liters of fluid for every hour of exercise. Drink water before, during and after each exercise session. If you need water while exercising, take small sips. • Be aware of your body. Take notice of how you feel. If something doesn’t feel just right, then stop immediately, rest and/or seek medical attention. • Pace yourself and take the time to rest. Don’t try to do everything all at once. Slowly build up your durability and stamina by gradually increasing the intensity of your workouts. Give yourself time to recover between workouts as well. Exercise is a key part of a healthy lifestyle. Remember to do so safely and effectively.

Thanks to beautiful weather, a dedicated student committee, and inspiring participants, the West Morris District came together to fight back against cancer and celebrate those who have

Relay for Life is a true testimony to the unity within the community, as despite school rivalries, students from both Mendham and Central are able to work together to raise funds and awareness for a disease that touches the lives of everyone across the globe each day.

Branda’s Italian Grill Remains Fresh After 15 Years

By Cheryl Conway nown for its fresh ingredients, like its homemade dressing and delicious eggplant, Branda’s Italian Grill in Budd Lake will be serving dishes that are even fresher with ingredients straight from its very own garden. A new vegetable garden was just landscaped last month behind the fence at the restaurant to offer the freshest produce to its customers, such as basil, green beans, mint, thyme, “Whatever we can grow,” says Claude Branda of Nutley, owner of Branda’s Italian Grill. The fresh garden ingredients can be used in his delicious salads or favorite dishes. Branda has invited his employees to help grow the vegetables so they can all take part in providing the best to the customers, he says. In business for 15 years on May 23, Branda’s Italian Grill was scheduled to hold a celebration Sat., July 9, at 11 a.m., with the Mt. Olive Twp. Mayor and some township officials to recognize the restaurant’s anniversary. Open every day 11 a.m. and Sundays at noon, Branda’s Italian Grill features recipes from Southern Italy but has a menu so diverse that “you can eat here every day and never eat the same things twice,” says Branda.

Many of his recipes stem from his mom’s cooking from Barci, South Italy, but he also does some cream dishes which is more central or northern Italy, as well as scampi which is more northern Italy style. “We cook what’s good,” says Branda. “People like alfredo; they like Franchese. We like dishes that are appealing. We sell hot dogs; we do hamburgers,” he laughs. “Our menu is very diverse. “We make our own dressings, it makes a difference,” says Branda. “There’s no additives. We use good ingredients”. The raspberry vinaigrette dressing is amazing and the “honey mustard dipping sauce is ridiculously good. Antipasto Italiana is superb. Mozzarella we make our own; grilled chicken wraps, bruschetta. We make that ourselves. That’s why you should eat here. We buy fresh wings bake them, deep fry them. We don’t use frozen wings. Lots of stuff we prepare.” The eggplant, “ours is the best you’ve ever had. We make it homemade. Eggplant lasagna is my mom’s dish. She made it for my birthday. It’s just off the charts.” Branda also raves about his “great coffee” which is 100 percent Columbian and his homemade desserts. “We have a pastry chef. She makes it special every week. We make our

own cannoli cream.” Branda’s trick, he says, is “we work on stuff. If we could continued on next page

Branda’s Italian Grill... continued from previous page make it better, we make it better,” like the tomato sauce, or the cannoli cream “if it needs another drop, needs less sugar, more cinnamon. You work on it for a month straight. The food is on point.” Branda also offers catering as well as delivery. He delivers up to nine miles away. First three miles are free; every three miles after that is $2 per mile. In the food business all of his life, Branda says he enjoys the people the most and feeding others a great meal. “I really enjoy working for the customers, whether it’s a pizza or a dinner,” he says. Most of all, he likes “feeding people. It kills me if something was wrong or if it was over cooked, it’s devastating. When I hear good things, it makes me happy.” Branda was working in food sales for 30

years when he came across LaGrada Brick Oven, the former restaurant before it became Branda’s Italian Grill. Branda worked for a food distribution company and would supply the food to LaGrada. When he found out that the owner of LaGrada was going to sell the place, Branda decided to buy the restaurant, officially becoming the new owner on April 15, 2001. After renovating, preparing and coming up with a new menu, Branda opened his Italian grill on May 23. Business was not always strong, admits Branda, especially at first. Turning a restaurant around was a challenge and Branda was close to ‘walking out’ and closing the doors. But then it was Valentine’s Day 2004, when things turned around for the new restaurant owner. “We were here for three years so we did a

terrific Valentine’s Day,” he describes. “We were so good; place was decorated beautifully; candles along the walkway, menu was just right, service was excellent, food was excellent. Instead of putting the key in the door and walk away, it was a magical night. Here I am 15 years later.” That night, definitely changed the business. “Anytime you have a really good service, they’re going to talk to other people. “The business is tremendous now,” says Branda. “We have a pretty solid footing in the community,” being very involved with the schools with discounts and donations, with feeding the high school sports teams. Having a consistent staff, currently 15 employees, has also helped the business. “When you have changes, have had different cooks, even if you are using the same ingredients, it changes. Everyone’s pinch and splash is different.” With the same cooks there for three years now, “consistency is important.” Branda was raised in the food industry. His dad, Frank, owned and Italian food distribution company in Hoboken from 1946 to 1989. Branda went from washing floors, to

loading trucks, then became a purchasing agent, importing all over, “mushrooms from China, tomatoes from Italy, anchovies from Portugal. “I was a buyer; I had to taste everything, sample it.” When his dad died, Branda and his brothers continued the business for four years then went to work for DiCarlo Food Distributors in N.Y. “We built their routes in the country,” he says. “That’s how I learned food, a lot of years, a lot of good eating,” says Branda. “Once you are in food, you can’t leave it. You always come back; it’s addicting. You got to love it. You got to have a passion for it.” The same goes with cooking. “I used to cook dinner for my kids every Sunday,” says Branda, it is a “tradition in the Italian family; Sunday dinner and family. From that it grew. My daughter would ask if she could bring a friend. Three or four people ended up with eight or ten. I’ve always had a passion to feed people. It is the highlight of my day.” For hours, menu and more information, go to brandasitaliangrill.com.

Fuel Your Day The Healthy Way

etween balancing work with family and friends, squeezing in a healthy meal can be hard, and finding time for a workout can be even harder. A busy lifestyle demands quick, portable and convenient foods that let you refuel your body with better health in mind. When time is tight, it may be tempting to reach for prepackaged snacks or fast food, but you can make your own grab-and-go snack packs and meals at home in less time than it takes to get through the drive-thru lane. A cool and refreshing superfood smoothie can give you a much-needed boost when your energy is dragging. Another smart snacking tip: fill sandwich bags with servings of fresh fruits and veggies that you can carry in your purse or gym bag to nibble on when hunger strikes. Options such as watermelon cubes or sticks are a great choice because they are high in fiber and water to help fill you up with nutrients instead of calories. Also be mindful of how you answer sweet tooth cravings. A naturally sweet treat such as a slice of watermelon is a satisfying alternative to cookies or candy. In fact, work-

ing sweet flavors into your regular meals is a way to keep cravings at bay. This salad combines an ancient grain high in protein and nutrients with the sweet crunch of fresh watermelon for a rich taste and texture. Homeless Solutions Earns Four Star Rating

omeless Solutions’ strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a four-star rating. “Homeless Solutions’ exceptional fourstar rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” according to Michael Thatcher, president & CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our four-star rating. Homeless Solutions continues to be a part of a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its four-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support

Homeless Solutions.” Homeless Solutions has had a four-star Charity Navigator rating for 12 of the past 14 years. “It’s important our donors trust that we’re using their donations wisely in our work to provide shelter, services, and supportive housing to homeless and low income people,” said Homeless Solutions Chief Development Officer Stephanie Cicale. “Our four-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability.” Homeless Solutions is a private, nonprofit organization that has been helping the homeless and working poor in the Morris County area since 1983. Their staff and programs give people the tools they need to rebuild their lives, and as working people move to independence, Homeless Solutions provides sustainable homes people can afford. Upcoming Family Day Event

esidents of Morris County and surrounding communities are invited to a Family Fun Day and Resource Fair on Sun., July 31, from noon to 4 p.m., at Central Park of Morris County. The feature of this free event – held rain or shine – will be a competitive Wheelchair Softball Game at the park’s Challenger Field from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Those attending will have the opportunity to experience firsthand Morris County’s fully accessible ball field and playground, while gathering valuable information presented by vendors about a range of available disability services and resources in the community. The event is being sponsored by DAWN Center for Independent Living, a non-profit agency serving people with disabilities in Morris, Sussex and Warren counties. “This event will provide an opportunity to bring together all members of the community not only to have a fun day with the family, but also to gather valuable information on disability services and supports available in surrounding communities,” said Carmela Slivinski, executive director at DAWN Center for Independent Living. “Last year, this event observed the 25th anniversary of the

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It was such a success that the staff and board of Directors at DAWNcil decided to make it an annual event.” DAWN Center for Independent Living (DAWNcil), based in Denville, is a non-profit agency that assists individuals with disabilities in Morris, Sussex and Warren counties with many services, including advocacy, information and referral, peer support, independent living skills trainings, employment opportunities and more. DAWNcil also administers the Morris and Sussex County Early Intervention Service Coordination Units, offering quality services and support to families of children from birth to three years who have delays and disabilities. Table space is limited. Vendors or organizations wishing to reserve a table at the event should call DAWNcil at 973-6251940 as soon as possible to request a reservation form. Vendors must provide their own cover in the event of inclement weather. For more information, call DAWNcil at 973-625-1940 or email info@dawncil.org.
