By Elsie Walker lthough people may not recognize his face, Richard Tomlinson’s voice is familiar. The resident at the Long Valley border is better known to radio listeners and DJ fans as Doc South.

Doc South Shares Some ‘Blurps’ In New Book Many have heard him as a DJ at the annual Memorial Motor Madness in Hackettstown and weekly at the Chatterbox in Sussex County, along with other venues. For years, he was heard on the airwaves of WRNJ and WNTI, both in Hackett-
stown. In addition to sharing the music of the great oldies, he had an afternoon talk show called The Front Porch. Though no longer on radio, Doc is keeping on the air through his own free webcast, and he is also entertaining and inspiring people through the written word. He’s published two books: “The Book of Doc: Blurps, The Starter Set;” and “Aunt Barb’s Magic Oven.” The former is available on Amazon.com and either book can be ordered for $12 plus shipping by contacting Tomlinson at docsouthshow@yahoo. com. One might wonder how Tomlinson got the handle of Doc South. Tomlinson explained that he had lived in the northeast, but moved to North Carolina for a few years in the early 1980s. While in the south, he was a rescue person, what he described as being between an
EMT and paramedic. Many of those he helped were unhappy about being ill and he found that bringing them some kind of smile helped. When he came back north and got into radio, his experience inspired the handle, Doc South. Tomlinson also noted that rock and roll started in the South so the name is also homage to that. As part of one of his radio shows Tomlinson would share what inspired his first book; he’d share blurps. What is a blurp? “It’s a cross between a blog and burp,” shared Tomlinson. People may understand what the word “blog” has to do with it, but when asked about the “burp” part, Tomlinson went on to explain that it comes from a story he wrote about God creating man. In the story, God shows an angel a special feature he included. When the angel presses on man’s
stomach, he lets out a noise. The noise becomes an interesting feature as it can come out at the most unexpected times and be the source of giggles. A blurp is an unexpected “aha” moment or smile. Tomlinson shared that he was inspired to look for, and capture, those moments by his granddaughter, Sadie. He and Sadie were getting ready to leave on a road trip. She was about age four or five and came up to Tomlinson with a fist full of four leaf cloves. When he asked where she got them, she told him that she picked them in his yard. He replied that he’d never seen any there. Sadie told him, “They are there. You just have to look for them.” That’s what Tomlinson
started doing, keeping his eyes open for those moments that bring a smile and capturing them in short pieces. “I’ve been trying as best I can to pleasantly change people’s attitudes,” he says. “Without preaching and scolding, I try to point out many of the great gifts in life that many of us don’t even notice.” He noted that he’s shared some blurps on his Doc South Facebook page. Also included in “Blurps The Starter Set,” are some short stories. His other book, “Aunt Barb’s Magic Oven,” actually started as a Thanksgiving Day blurp that took on a life of its own. Tomlinson gave an continued on page 2

continued from front page overview of the book. “A short description of the plot “Aunt Barb’s Magic Oven” might go like this: On a visit to relatives for Thanksgiving Day, I die in their living room on Thanksgiving Day Eve. An angel named Gabe comes to me and gives me a tour of the very afterlife that we all will someday face. He also takes me on a tour through existence. Gabe also puts me through a kind of test. The test is that my services are required to help with a giant worldwide Thanksgiving Day Feast. Finally, I have to choose if I want to remain as a human or take the next flight into the afterlife.” He noted that the story is full of imagery and shared as an example, a scene where he is talking to his
grandmother in the kitchen and the pictures on the calendar behind her start to talk, giving him advice. “My story deals with religion and our existence, but not in a serious way,” says Tomlinson. “This story of mine tries to point out that life on Earth and life in Heaven can be more fun and much more meaningful than any of us could ever imagine.” While it is clear that he loves sharing his stories, and hopes that through them he inspires and brings a smile to people, he has another love- radio. “I no longer work for regular radio,” he says. “Mostly, I do my webcast which features oldies of all types from the 20’s through the 70’s. I do a Saturday live webcast on my sta-
tion every Saturday from the Chatterbox [in Sussex County]. I also interview folks of interest on my station and do odd music webcasts from my home overlooking the Musconetcong River.” His webcast can be heard at http://playe r. s t r e a m l i c e n s i n g . com/4798?l&stream_ id=9009. The webcast is free and without commercials. It can be heard via computer or any mobile device at any time. Tomlinson noted that having a free station like that is costly. He has a GoFundMe page for donations to help defray some of the costs of having a free station and his other endeavors. That site is https://www.gofundme.com/ismj90.

Whiffle Ball Tournament Hits Home For Friends And Family Of Long Valley Teen
P
By Cheryl Conway roceeds from a Whiffle Ball Tournament held in May in honor of a 15 year old Long Valley girl who lost her battle to cancer will serve as seed money for a new foundation. A youth ministry, The God Squad out of St. Luke’s in Long Valley, hosted its second annual Whiffle Ball Tournament Sun., May 21, from noon to 4 p.m. to support a local family who lost their daughter, Sarah Crowley, to leukemia a month prior. More than 200 people played on 26 teams, with more than 100 fans cheering on the sidelines. The $2,500 raised from the tournament will be used to establish the Sarah’s Fight For Hope Foundation.
“We will use the funds to aid in the start-up of Sarah’s foundation,” said Ingrid Crowley, mother of Sarah. “This will allow us to continue Sarah’s fight! We fight in memory of Sarah. We fight for the families that are battling every day. We fight for the children and families that will receive the diagnosis that will forever change their lives. We fight for the angels that we will forever cherish.” Made up of 52 members, The St. Luke’s God Squad is a youth group which often organizes fundraisers for a cause. “We do all different fundraisers in different areas in different needs,” explains St. Luke’s Youth Minister Nina Dorlon. “We try to do something special for someone every year.
This year, they had planned the whiffle ball tournament back in February to raise funds for Sarah’s family, who are members of the church. Sarah was still fighting her cancer and organizers and youth members were hoping that she would have been able to attend, says Dorlon. “Kids were really affected with Sarah passing away,” says Dorlon. “When we were planning the tournament Sarah was still alive. We were hoping she’d get out of the hospital; it turned out she passed away before the event took place.” The God Squad continued on its mission and still held the whiffle ball tournament despite Sarah’s passing on Tues., April 18. “We did it as a celebra-
tion,” says Dorlon. “We decided to still have it as a celebration for her life.” Dorlon’s husband, Kevin, set up six whiffle ball fields behind the church and games were held throughout the day. “Between the DJ, hot dogs, pizza, doughnuts and pickles on a stick, the participants were having a ball,” says Norlon. “Love,
support and laughter filled the six whiffle ball fields. The teens raised more than $2,500 for the Crowley family, but more importantly they gave them a day to celebrate Sarah and be surrounded by so many people who care for them.” Dorlan says, “all you could hear was laughter; seeing each other, giving hugs, telling stories about
Sarah,” who was a freshman at West Morris Central High School. Sarah’s father, Jen Crowley, played on the “Scared Hitless” winning second place against the third place team “Crabby Cousins,” on which Sarah’s older sister, Briellen, played. The first place winners were “A Case of the

What Moms Need To Know About Summer Nutrition For Kids
Established 1991 Morris County’s Top Restaurant

ith summer in full force, kids are busy with physical activities and whether it’s little league baseball games, swim team or summer camp, they’re more active than ever. Moms, nutritionists and pediatricians alike know active kids and developing bones and muscles need essential nutrients to grow strong, but The Dietary Guidelines for Americans say most Americans, including children, actually aren’t getting enough fiber, calcium, vitamin D and potassium in their diets.

Moms can keep up by making sure kids fuel their bodies with proper nutrition and stay hydrated at the same time. As a drink kids already love the taste of, milk is a great choice when moms want to serve delicious and natural, high-quality protein for kids before sending them off on summer adventures. Many are also surprised to learn that milk can help hydrate after exercise due to its natural electrolytes and fluids. Milk plays an important role for kids’ meals and snacks, providing three

of the four nutrients most Americans, including kids, aren’t getting enough of (calcium, vitamin D and potassium), and it’s the top food source of these nutrients, to boot.1 Plus, with 8 grams of protein per every 8-ounce glass, the farmfresh beverage is a great way to help the whole family kick start the day. One way to hit a home run for your kids is by stepping up to the breakfast plate with delicious baseball pancakes. Served with an 8-ounce glass of milk, this breakfast is the continued on page 18

A Sweet Cherry Season
W
hether fresh cherries are a favorite or a treat you’ve yet to try, the time to enjoy them is now. Orchards in the Pacific Northwest, the nation’s largest growing region, experienced a long, cool spring, which often translates into more time and energy a tree can put into the fruit. When combined with the superior growing conditions characteristic to the area, this season’s fruit showcases what Northwest cherries are known for: their large size and sweet flavor profile. Popular varieties grown
in the Northwest include the mahogany-red Bings and super-sweet, yellow Rainiers. Rainier cherries, with their unique golden color and red blush, tend to ripen earlier in the year. Growers pick Rainier cherries over multiple weeks, selecting the ripest fruit each time. Other varieties include the early-ripening Chelans and Tietons, followed by the often larger and darker Skeenas, Sweethearts and Lapins. Aside from the light-hued Rainier (which has juice that doesn’t stain) you can typically spot sweet cherries by their dark
red skins – in general, the darker, the sweeter. Outside of summer get-togethers, cherries make for a better-for-you late-night snack option as well. A cup of fresh, sweet cherries contains only 90 calories along with a low glycemic index of 22 making their cold, sweet crunch a tasty way to satisfy hunger cravings. Plus, they boast melatonin, which helps regulate circadian rhythm and promote healthy sleep patterns. Fresh cherries should be kept in a sealed bag or container, and keep for approximately two weeks when
refrigerated. To extend the cherry season and enjoy their health benefits after summer fades, buy an extra bag or two and preserve cherries by rinsing, packing and freezing them. Basic freezing instructions 1. Select 3-5 pounds of firm, ripe, Northwest-grown sweet cherries. 2. After rinsing and draining, spread whole cherries with stems in a layer on a baking sheet. 3. Place in freezer until firm then pack into freezer-proof containers or plastic freezer bags. Remove excess air and cover tightly.
4.Add frozen cherries to smoothies or juices, or defrost and put in hot cereal, pies, turnovers, cobblers and more. Or enjoy as a frozen, sweet late-night treat. To create a festive cherry dish for the summer season, try this Cherry Bruschetta as a snack or
appetizer. Find more recipes and cherry tips at nwcherries.com. Cherry Bruschetta Serves: 8 18 slices (1/2-inch thick) small baguette-style bread 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 1 1/2 cups pitted Northcontinued on page 20

ith origins in China and Japan, sushi is an Eastern delicacy. However, there is no denying the popularity of sushi elsewhere in the world, particularly in North America. As with many ancient foods, sushi’s origins have an element of mystery to them. The original type of sushi is believed to have first been developed in southeast Asia before spreading to southern China. Sushi was eventually introduced to Japan around the 8th century, where it would evolve into the type of sushi many people enjoy today. According to The His-
Love For Sushi Continues To Grow
tory Kitchen, a division of PBS Food, one origin story for sushi involves an ancient Japanese wives’ tale. According to that tale, an elderly woman began hiding her pots of rice in osprey nests, fearing that thieves would steal them. When she collected her pots, she found the rice had begun to ferment. She also discovered that fish scraps from the osprey’s meal had mixed into the rice. Upon sampling the mixture, she found the rice helped to preserve the fish. She also found that the resulting meal was tasty. Early Chinese sushi involved fermenting fish on rice to preserve it. The rice
was thrown away and the fish was eaten when desired. The Japanese took their own approach to sushi, deciding to eat the rice with the fish. Sushi innovator Matsumoto Yoshiichi began seasoning the sushi rice with rice wine vinegar. This made it possible to eat the sushi immediately, instead of waiting months for it to ferment. Through the years, enterprising individuals began selling sushi to others. In the 19th century, rather than wrapping the fish in rice, sellers placed it on beds of rice and sometimes other ingredients. This presentation of sushi, credited to a man named Hanaya Yohei,
became very popular. This type of sushi is called “nigiri sushi” (finger sushi). After World War II, the sushi style of presenting fish was adopted by western cultures. Sushi preparation and dining is an art form that
continues to evolve. New influences have changed sushi even more by marrying traditional recipes with “fusion” styles. Demand for sushi continues to increase. According to Statistic Brain’s sushi industry
statistics, there are 16,000 sushi restaurants outside of Japan, with close to 4,000 in the United States alone. What began as a method of preserving food has transformed into a billion-dollar industry.

Acupuncture Can Enhance Your Endocrine System and Optimize Your Health
id you know that your endocrine system produces 30 distinct hormones each of which has extremely specific jobs to do? Your endocrine system is responsible for all hormonal functions in the body. Your endocrine system governs your physical growth, mood, reproduction, mental functionality, your mood and your immune system. Needless to say, it is very important to have your endocrine system operating optimally at all times. When not working properly, you can become susceptible to infertility, various diseases and your ability to overcome infection will become weakened. Your endocrine system impacts every area of your health and yet unknowingly it is bombarded on a daily basis with the foods you consume and the amount stress you allow in your life. The cornerstone of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture has always been about prevention and helping the body to restore balance to the various organ systems and meridians or pathways that cover the entire body. If these pathways or meridians become
Deborah Waddell, Dipl. Ac., C.A.
obstructed or depleted you can suffer from a myriad of symptoms such as: tiredness, weight gain, depression, digestive problems, infertility, hair loss, arthritis and feeling cold all the time, regardless of the temperature. The following are a list of each of the endocrine glands and their functions: Thyroid – The thyroid gland produces thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) and Triiodothyronine (T3) and Free Thyroxine (T4) which control the growth, your temperature and function of every cell in your body. Your thyroid controls your metabolism – a high TSH combined with a low or normal T4 generally indicates hypothyroidism, which can have a detrimental effect on fertility, your energy level and your ability to lose weight to name a few. Sometimes a diseased thyroid gland will start producing very high levels of T3 but still produce normal levels of T4. Therefore measurement of both hormones provides an even more accurate evaluation of thyroid function. Reproductive Hormones – Your reproductive glands consist of either ovaries or
testes and secrete hormones that control the development of male and female characteristics. Women have two ovaries and their function is to release egg cells and to produce hormones. They usually produce one egg per month and their function is quite unique. The normal ovary produces two very important hormones but in a very special unique way. For the first half of the menstrual cycle only Estrogen is produced but in the latter half the ovary also starts producing another hormone Progesterone. The ovary also produces small amounts of testosterone. Did you know that when a baby girl is born, her ovaries contain all the egg cells (ova) she will ever possess? The egg cells are formed in utero and no new egg cells are formed after birth. This differs substantially from the male, who start producing sperm only at puberty and then continues to produce sperm for the rest of his life. This is why women enter the menopause with all their egg cells used up. The first half of a women’s cycle is considered Yin as is Estrogen, while the second half
of a woman’s cycle is Yang in nature and is Progesterone. It is vitally important that both are balanced to ensure a good menstrual cycle and provide a fertile ground for conception. In males the Testes are glands are responsible for making testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, and for generating sperm. The semen is considered a Yin substance while the sperm and its ability to swim is considered to be more Yang. Therefore, sperm volume, motility and morphology come under the auspices of both Kidney Yin and Yang. Hypothalamus/Pituitary – The hypothalamus/ pituitary glands provide the primary link between the endocrine and central nervous systems. Nerve cells and hormones signal the pituitary gland to secrete or suppress the release of various hormone messages to your other glands. The pituitary gland secretes your growth hormones. The hypothalamus controls the autonomic nervous system and acts with the limbic system to regulate emotional and behavioral patterns, regulates eating and drink-

ing, and controls your body temperature. It also controls pituitary gland secretions. In response to stimuli such as stress, pain and emotions, the hypothalamus can exert effects on the pituitary gland to order to respond to these stimuli. Adrenals – Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and regulate your body’s response to stress and are made of two parts, each of which secretes a separate set of hormones. The adrenal cortex or outer part produces hormones’ that are vital to life, such as cortisol (which helps regulate your metabolism and your body respond to stress). The medulla or inner part produces hormones such as adrenaline which helps your body react to stress. Over time, chronic elevated stress levels can lead to weight gain, decreased resistance to infections, fatigue, muscles aches and low blood sugar. Pancreas – Your pancreas makes pancreatic juices and hormones, called insulin and glucagon. Both these hormones are secreted directly into your bloodstream, and together, they regulate the level of glucose in the blood. Insulin lowers the blood sugar level and increases the amount glucagon (stored carbohydrate) in the liver. Glucagon increases your blood sugar level if it falls too low. If the insulin secreting cells do not work properly, diabetes occurs. Pineal – Your pineal gland is also referred to as the “third eye”. It is the spiritual Third Eye, our inner vision and it is considered the seat of the soul. It
is located in the center of the cranium. It produces the serotonin derivative melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/ sleep patterns and seasonal affective disorders. As you can see from the information above, your endocrine system is vital to maintaining homeostasis or balance to your life. A healthy endocrine system which secretes just the right amount of specific hormones will slow your aging process and keep you vibrant and healthy as you age. When treating an endocrine condition with Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, my job is to determine the root cause of your imbalance and then treat both the root cause and the branch (your symptoms). The endocrine system is tied to the internal balance of your yin and yang energy. I like to use this analogy, imagine that the Yang energy is like gasoline that fuels your car, and the Yin energy is the coolant for the car’s engine. Without the coolant, the engine overheats and begins to burn out. Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture work to make sure the Yin and Yang are equal within the body restoring your internal balance. The root of the body’s Qi or energy in Chinese Medicine is the Kidney Organ System. Treatment used to strengthen the Kidney System and movement of Qi throughout the body is used to strengthen the Kidney Organ System thereby restoring your endocrine glands.

By Cheryl Conway he community is invited to learn about and support a new non-profit organization to help provide a safe dwelling for women who have been victims of sexual exploitation. Come spend the afternoon on Sat., June 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for Health, Wellness, Nutrition at Healing Path Massage Therapy and Spa in Long Valley. All proceeds will benefit Zera House, a faith based organization that will provide a home for women who need to experience healing after being rescued from the horrors of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Healing Path Massage Therapy and Spa will not charge an entrance fee but proceeds for services will go toward Zera House. Participants can get a massage for $1 per minute; and a 10 minute skin care analysis for $5. For those who want to enroll in any Isagenix system- which includes solutions to weight loss, energy, performance, healthy aging and wealth creation50 percent of the referral bonus will go toward Zera House. There will be refreshments, Isagenix samplings, music and a special presentation from Ariel Wagner, co-founder, director and C.E.O. of Zera House. Wagner, 35, of Phillipsburg, co-founded Zera House in Dec. 2015 along with her friend Katie Van Gorp of Atlanta, Ga. For extra support, they partnered with School For Life in West Virginia as well as support from the church

community. The motivation behind the organization began eight years ago when Wagner was first introduced to the concept of humans being trafficked, sexually exploited and sold into slavery, she explains. In Feb. 2012, she went on a two week mission to Thailand with a non-profit group that rescues children- Remember Nhu- and worked with orphanages with 75 children aged two to 18 targeted for such abuse. The purpose of her trip was to help with programs and projects such as music lessons and exercise classes, and to go into villages of local Thai women to see if children were at risk of being sold into slavery for child prostitution. If she found any in an unstable environment, they were removed and brought to a safe home. “This just grieved my heart for so long,” says Wagner, who decided to share her vision with Van Gorp to establish a refuge in the mountains to help women heal. Wagner had been working for ten years as a massage therapist in Phillipsburg, from 2007-2017, when she says “I was called to do this, to do Zera House. “The lord gave me this vision.” After being in a “bad relationship” for almost three years, that had involved sexual, mental and emotional abuse, Wagner had to go through her own healing before realizing the need for Zera House, she says. “I came out of my own abusive situation and said
I want to help others heal too,” says Wagner. Zera means seed in Hebrew, hence the name of Zera House, which translates into the hope ‘to plant seeds into their hearts and souls so they are equipped to live out their purposes of their lives.” The program is faith based, with a holistic approach involving sustainable living practices. “We at Zera house have a passion for helping women who have been subject to the horrors of human trafficking & sexual exploitation,” as stated as its mission. “We have a home where these women can come and heal. Our mission is to share the love, hope and grace of our loving father in heaven.” In Aug. 2016, Zera House was given a physical house in the mountains in McDowell County, West Virginia, a poverty-stricken area compared to that of a third-world country, describes Wagner, with drugs and prostitution, sewage under homes and no-running water. The house, which will be able to help four to five women at a time, is being renovated and is expected to open by the end of this summer, she says. Since April, Wagner has been living in a loft in a large school with many rooms to board women, whether for a week, month or year. The school has been provided by School for Life, an organization that contacted Wagner through her church, The Chapel of Warren Valley in
Washington, where Wagner’s parents are members. At that church, volunteers got involved with Jersey Crew, a dedicated group that visits that impoverished area of West Virginia at least five times a year to help with repairs and construction. When her mom told the founder at the School for Life about her daughter’s idea about Zera House, he said “this is where she needs to be.” Wagner says, “I came here to visit; when I first got here I said ‘I can’t do this. It’s very sad, very poor area. I knew this was going to be the first area to have our home.” She so far has a nine year old in her care, given to her by the child’s guardian after the child was taken from the mother who was involved in prostitution; as well as a 35-year old woman who was homeless and involved in drugs and prostitution. “I am helping her stay off the streets, stay out of trouble and go through the healing process emotionally,” says Wagner. “She’s doing very well,” and just graduated from nursing classes. “The house is equipped with all that it needs to support Zera House including room to house the women and to garden and live sustainable and a community where they can learn to work and go to school,” as stated in materials provided by Wagner. “There women will receive counseling, building necessary life skills, volunteer in the community, learn about sustainable living and more. The
main goal is to equip women with the skills, community and personal resolve they need to function adaptively in society without returning to exploitive industries.” Once women are in her care for up to a year, her plan is to provide transitional housing by putting them up in apartments and teaching them about budgeting, balancing a checkbook and grocery shopping. “Some may not have a high school diploma; we will help them get their GED’s. Helping them find what they love and turn it onto a career,” is her plan. Also to keep them close “so they can be mentored; they need that accountability still.” In her first project, Wagner is working to get women off the streets from all over the country. She is working with four organizations and volunteers helping her locate these women and provide transportation to Zera House. She has also hired a certified counselor to provide in depth therapy to her clients. Money to pay for utilities as well as repairs, maintenance, food, groceries and services to the
residents will come from fundraisers and donations, she says. A dinner benefit held March 2 at The Farmhouse at the Grand Colonial in Hampton to raise awareness about Zera House provided $20,000 as seed money. “We thought it would be five years to open our first home,” says Wagner. Instead it’s taking only two years since incorporated. While children being trafficked is just as disturbing, Wagner decided to help women 18 years old and up first since “there is not enough” organizations out there that provide such a service. “We want a program established and strong before we take on children,” says Wagner. She shares some statistics based on research by the N.J. Coalition Against Human Trafficking. “Sex exploitation and trafficking of men, women and children is a $32 billion industry in the world, more than Nike, Coca Cola and Google combined. The U.S. holds $9.5 billion of that; N.J is number seven in the country when it comes continued on page 25

help by donating funds, as well as gardening tools and volunteering their time. “If this is something that tugs at their heart, they can partner financially,” says Wagner. “If they want to volunteer a talent or craft, they are welcome to come,” like makeup artists to help women with their makeup, or those who make jewelry or scarves, or those who just want to visit to have tea with the women. For more information, visit www.zerahouse.org.
To donate or volunteer, contact Wagner at ariel@ zerahouse.org. “Ultimately, I believe I want to live out the purpose of my life that’s helping others,” concludes Wagner. “This demographic has grieved my heart for so long. Instead of watching it happen, I want to do something about it. These women are so broken. I believe it is my calling to piece these women back together and become whole again.”

Long Valley Painting Party Fundraiser Benefits Fire Company
By Dawn M Chiossi ick up the paintbrushes for a good cause and let the inner artist free! On May 19, folks in Long Valley received their chance to do just that with their fundraiser to benefit the Long Valley Fire Company Number One, courtesy of the Ladies Auxiliary. There is a delight in painting. Just by creating the picture and letting the brilliant colors fly, it can accomplish so much. In addition to tapping into the mind’s sea of creativity, putting paint to a blank canvas can quiet the mind, achieve catharsis and fashion something beautiful. As an added bonus, it is fun. And in the case of the Painting Party Fundraiser, it can even raise money for a good cause. This event was open to everyone, residents and non-residents alike. Whether they were interested in painting itself, or just helping out to benefit the fire company, or just wanted a fun night out, all were welcome. Funds raised were approximately $600.
This friends and family event was the brainchild of the Ladies Auxiliary, and more specifically member, Maggie Carberry. Always seeking for new and creative ways to raise funds for the fire department, they embraced this new idea eagerly. The party boasted of approximately 41 participants painting. This was their first year of having such a party, but hopefully not the last. Artist Sharon Calle of ARTSI Studio, and facilitator of this event, hopes that there will be many more in the future. Enthusiastic and passionate on the subject of art, Calle remarks, “Hopefully this fundraiser will be an ongoing thing.” In fact, the Ladies Auxiliary have already expressed interest in holding another Painting Party Fundraiser in the fall. In the spirit of community and having fun, painting parties are actually quite popular for many occasions, especially for birthdays or fundraisers. They are a great way to engage people, get them to relax and enjoy and to let
them test their own artistic and inventive waters. This event is guaranteed to give lasting memories as well. When asked about painting parties, Calle says “People seem to just love them. It is a great experience for everyone. As well as having fun and learning about art, they have a memento they can hang on the wall. “ Calle gives the personal touch to her painting parties, so no beginner or non-beginner has to worry. Calle’s experience as an artist and certified art educator helps her guide artists of all skill levels to success. “The twist I bring [to the parties] is that I give a lot more detailed instruction than a lot of other art studios. In the end, I want participants to be proud of the painting they made.” And this was surely the case. Painters not only put their talents and energies to their creation, but they put their community spirit in it as well. Those 41 painters made a step by step landscape painting inspired by a real life location in Long Valley. Thanks to the

fundraiser’s painting party participants, the beauty and serenity of the Gilette Trail of Long Valley itself is captured forever in art. The painting was based on a photograph taken by Calle. “It is a beautiful spot that I pass by every day,” she says. The location just seemed to speak to her, since as an artist she gravitates to the country feel and open spaces and greenery of the scenery. “It is the spirit of Long Valley,” she enthuses. “For the painting I wanted to offer a familiar subject that locals could connect to.” The Painting Party Fundraiser guests were full
and varied. All ages were represented. Even three generations of a grandmother, mom and daughter showed up to enjoy and support the Long Valley’s fire department. Calle was proud to see that “When people came they were saving seats for friends.” In addition to the painting itself, the Ladies Auxiliary made sure that they put the party in the event. In addition to BYOB, they served refreshments such as snacks, finger foods, cheese and crackers. Guests were encouraged to bring treats as well. The night was a chance to unwind and have fun. As well as the laughs and cre-

ativity, no one forgot that this was a chance to raise funds for such a great organization. And this resonated with everyone when the painting party had a surprise visitor, Carberry’s husband. “One of the fire fighters from the fire company stopped by,” Calle shares warmly. “He stood there in his uniform, and just wanted to thank everyone for what we were doing to help, and for the fundraiser itself. He was so grateful.” For more information on the ARTSI Studio LLC, or for further details on painting fundraisers, visit www.artsi-studio.com.

about habitat and species loss. Tallamy provides the narrative thread that challenges the notion that humans are here and nature is someplace else. Inspiring stories of community commitment to conservation landscaping illustrate Tal-
