West Caldwell Police Recognized for Traffic Safety

By Anya Bochman he Traffic Officers Association of Essex County (TOAEC) is an organization dedicated to enhancing traffic safety in the state, while serving as a resource for its members to exchange ideas and build working relationships. On Feb. 21, TOAEC, along with event sponsor AAA Northeast, recognized several Essex County police departments and individual police officers for their efforts in promoting traffic safety in their respective communities, including the West Caldwell police department.

The purpose of TOAEC is to organize traffic safety officers in order to keep them apprised of the latest technology, training and legislation in the areas of road safety.

Additionally, the association aims to provide guidance and educational techniques as well as communicating with New Jersey citizens via statewide safety committees.

To the end of promoting safer driving, the annual TOAEC traffic safety award is presented to individuals or organizations which “go above and beyond to serve their community and promote traffic safety,” according to WCPD. The department’s Traffic Unit members, Corporal Raymond Foster

The WCPD maintains a Traffic Unit of several officers who are assigned to patrol squads. Responsibilities of the Traffic Unit include investigating motor vehicle

Chief of West Caldwell Police Gerard Paris attributes the department’s successes with traffic safety and reducing fatalities from vehicular accidents to a comprehensive public awareness program that includes a number of initiatives. Along with a bicycle safety program and a drunk driving educational endeavor, Paris cites the department’s participation in “Click It or Ticket.” “Click It or Ticket” is a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign aimed at increasing the use of seat belts among young people in the United States.

The initiative relies heavily on

targeted advertising aimed at teens and young adults.

“The strategy is in part about enforcement, and educating the public about safer driving,” Paris said.

Seat belt use and impaired driving are the primary traffic-related issues that WCPD officers enforce, with a result of no reported fatalities from motor vehicle accidents in the past year, something that Paris regards as “very fortunate.”

The police chief’s primary concern for the West Caldwell community, in terms of traffic safety, is the amount of drivethru vehicular traffic from other towns, which makes cell phone use and distracted driving harder to regulate. To that end, Paris emphasizes awareness of surroundings

and wearing a seat belt while driving.

The primary way that WCPD works to improve traffic safety is through training programs, public events and social media; the department has its own message board to facilitate

community outreach.

“The public has been receptive and there has been a reduction in traffic accidents,” Paris said of WCPD’s strategies. “We’re all in the same boat here; we want people to be safe.”

According to mother, Nicole Sabato, her son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when he was 22 months old. At the time, that diagnosis was vastly different than it is today. “We didn’t know what that meant,” Sabato shares candidly. “It was like being transplanted into a foreign country, where you couldn’t speak the language, didn’t know the culture or customs.

Learn as you go, they did. Soon they realized that there was not much out there for people with Autism and Sabato set out to change all that. She credits all of the wonderful people out there who aided Michael with early intervention and outside the box thinking, quickly realizing that they would have to think less in black and white absolutes to conquer her son’s challenges.

“That’s key,” she says. “Together we were determined to make my son the best he could possibly be.”

That included mainstreaming him in the public school and integrating him in the school goings-on. “There were such good people around him,” Sabato praises.

In particular she mentions Dr. Heather Payne, Michael’s long-time behaviorist. Describing how she not only aided Michael, but also all of the teachers, coaches and aides around him, Sabato enthuses, “Without her none of this would be possible.

She’s a gift.”

Then there’s Michael John Sabato himself, more than just a diagnosis, he and everyone around him--especially teacher Jarrod Cappello and head coach Chris Benequista-- realized that he enjoyed athletics.

“He ran track, and it was such a success,” his mother says. Then he became part of the football team--helping them out, “being as much a part of the team as he could possibly be,” Sabato relates.

She can’t say enough about West Essex.

“They are amazing,” she enthuses, describing how they made Sabato a part of things such as making him a part of the ritual pasta dinners and Senior Night.

Seeking for her son to continue to grow and flourish after graduation, they came up with the idea of Mission Team 94. This non-profit’s mission is to help young adults who are dealing with the challenges of Autism as they grow and evolve out of a school-based support system that normally gives assistance to people who are much younger.

Opening up a new chapter for people

who are enduring autism, Mission Team 94 seeks to help these young adults with day to day living skills such as payments, receipts, grocery shopping and the like. “All stuff we take for granted,” Sabato says.

“With Mission 94 we strive to give them a voice, to give them a full and happy life.

At Mission 94 we start a conversation about Autism and what we can do to help to open a valid program to get a full and happy life. It’s what they deserve.”

There has been an outpouring of support for both this event and organization.

“Everyone is so willing to help. It restores my faith in people,” Sabato prides. “It’s amazing.”

For Nicole Sabato, Mission Team 94, the Color Run and its subsequent fundraisers, it’s all about giving back. What began for her and her family as an unfamiliar, insecure journey, became something else: “Everyone opened their arms to my son all the way. I am so grateful,” she shares. Now with Team 94, and their various fundraisers, she hopes to open her arms to others.

Reverend Monsignor Robert E. Emery Named New Pastor of Saint Aloysius Parish

By Steve Sears hen Monsignor Michael Desmond recently retired after 14 years as Pastor of Saint Aloysius Parish in West Caldwell, the Archdiocese of Newark was quick to name a successor who would shepherd the flock.

That man is Reverend Monsignor Robert E. Emery, J.C.L., V.E. His appointment date was February 15, but he will be officially installed on June 1.

He speaks to the challenges he faces.

“It’s really just adapting to a new environment, a new set of circumstances, a new way of living and being. Meeting new people, establishing new relationships, coming to understand the history and local traditions of the new parish where you find yourself.”

Entering a new realm, however, means exiting another. Msgr. Emery looks back fondly on his twelve years at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in South Orange. “It was

comfortable, but mostly to leave people.”

Msgr. Emery, born in Hoboken but raised in Ocean Township, loves the nature of the beach. “I’m a Monmouth County guy and I’m a beach lover.” He graduated from Kean College in 1983 with a degree in Elementary Education, and then attended Immaculate Conception Seminary for his Priesthood studies and was ordained on continued on page 8

Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. His first assignment was with Saint Catharine’s Parish in Glen Rock, where he served from January of 1988 to June of 1990. In June 1990 he was appointed Secretary to Archbishop Theodore McCarrick, and in September of 1992 traveled Catholic University in Washington, D.C. to study Canon Law, eventually receiving his Licentiate in Canon Law in June of 1994. Upon his return to New Jersey he was assigned as parochial vicar at Saint Peter’s Parish in Belleville, staying there until June of 1998. While there, he served for one year as the Kean University Campus Minister and in June of 2000 received an M.A. in Counseling from the university. In June of 1998, he was appointed as Archbishop McCarrick’s Secretary for one year and then was named Pastor of Saint Lawrence Parish in Weehawken. He served there until June of 2004, and from 20022004, he also was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese on a part-time basis.

After departing Saint Lawrence Parish, Monsignor Emery was named Vicar General and Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark. Pope John Paul II conferred Papal Honors on him in May of 2005 with the title “Prelate of Honor”. In February of 2007, he was named Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows, where he served until early 2019.

While at Our Lady of Sorrows, he in September of 2011 was appointed Assistant Judicial Vicar in the Marriage Tribunal on a part-time basis, where he served for two years, and on July 1, 2013 was named Essex County Regional/Episcopal Vicar. Early in 2016, he was also

appointed as the Archbishop’s Representative to the Archdiocesan Review Board.

In addition to pastoring Saint Aloysius, Msgr. Emery still remains Regional/Episcopal Vicar for the county.

“He left me a parish that is very well established,” says Msgr. Emery of Msgr. Desmond. “It has its own rich tradition and history. The stability, the richness, it’s a very active, vibrant parish, there are many ministries and programs, and has a very active spiritual and liturgical life. Those are the biggest things that strikes me.”

Msgr. Emery in his early days at Saint Aloysius is still an observer, watching and listening, getting to know the parish and the parishioners. “Once I understand the fullness of what’s going on in the parish, I’ll be able to work together with our Pastoral Council and our staff to work on some goals and a vision for the future.”

“But it seems a lot of good stuff is already going on. I see my first several months as time to observe, to learn, and to evaluate. ” He also plans to continue to help Trinity Academy, the parish’s K-8 school continue to grow.

Msgr. Robert Desmond has accomplished much in his 32 years of being a priest, but none of the titles and accomplishments trump his biggest: serving God. “While I’m very proud of all that I’ve accomplished, what means the most to me is being a priest and serving the people, bringing God to people, and bringing people to God.” Founded in 1892, Saint Aloysius Parish is located at 219 Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell.

Caldwell Library Children’s Room Reopens

By Kimberly Redmond fter a flood destroyed part of the Caldwell Library last summer, the community opened its wallets to help repair the damage.

Now, after collecting more than $25,000 for its “Reimagine & Rebuild” campaign, the library is opening its doors to host a party to thank donors for their generosity.

Scheduled for Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the library will host a grand re-opening event for the public, offering activities, raffles, balloon animals and a visit from book character Pete the Cat. The afternoon will also include the dedication of the library’s donor wall and new artwork in the children’s room.

In her spring newsletter, Library Director Claudine Pascale said “Thank you to all who donated money, books, time and a supportive shoulder as we went through the process of rebuilding the lower level of the library. The end of the ordeal is in sight and we want to celebrate!”

In early August 2018, the library was among the many properties in town damaged after a severe thunderstorm with heavy rainfall dumped nearly five inches of water in parts of Essex County and prompted a series of floods.

Caldwell was among the hardest hit areas in the state, reporting the highest level of rainfall during the storm – 4.92 inches. The storm also damaged Caldwell’s municipal building, as well as community center parking deck.

The library partially reopened later that month, however only the upper level

was used since the downstairs area, where the children’s room is located, was left unusable after flood waters rushed down the ramp and into the room.

Besides mud and water on the floors, hundreds of books were damaged and thrown out as a result. The library also lost all of its toys, musical instruments and furniture.

Fortunately, boxes that were part of a local history archive that sustained water damage were salvaged after being sent to a specialist to be dried and cleaned, according to the library.

Many programs wound up being cancelled, including the annual Summer Reading Wrap-Up party. Though some children’s programming was still held in other parts of the library, it wasn’t the full array of activities normally offered.

“Saturday, August 11, 2018 is a day we here at the Caldwell Public Library will never forget,” Pascale said last fall.

In her newsletter in September, Pascale wrote that she and the staff are committed “to providing the best possible service” and thanked the community “for its outpouring of support during this trying time.”

In November, the library launched a fundraiser to collect $25,000 to rebuild its beloved children’s room. Among the repairs needed: cleaning, dehumidifying, ripping up old floors and installing new ones, and repainting walls.

In addition to financial contributions, the community also donated toys, musical instruments, games, puzzles and books to help their hometown library.

Shortly after the start of the New Year, the children’s room reopened, offering its

full schedule of activities and programs once again.

There are approximately 1.2 million Rotarians in 167 countries, but there is probably only one Rotarian who wears a tattoo of the Rotary International on his arm.

Anthony Deluca, a Bloomfield resident, and Kearney Banking executive was a member of the Rotary Club of the Caldwells and says the club’s words, “Service above self…” are not just hollow praise. The proof is tattooed on his arm.

Deluca’s tattoo shows the Rotary Club’s distinctive logo on the underside of his left arm. “You don’t get more dedicated than our members,” said one member.

Deluca joined the Rotary Club in 2014 and told the Caldwell News that he got his tattoo on Feb. 6.

Deluca spent his first day as a Rotarian at Camp Merry Heart Service Day, alongside other Rotary Clubs, he recalled. “From that point on, I was hooked.”

“They were just so warm and accommodating, they made me feel like family. I just loved what they were about. It reminded me of all the things I used to do in my younger years.”

“I’ve always considered myself a humanitarian,” said Deluca. “When I was younger, I would participate in my church’s outreach programs.

From there I continued trying to help people.”

“I was just so hungry to do

that as an adult but I wasn’t finding any opportunities and suddenly there it was! Rotary became like a second family to me.” Deluca said.

“Rotary is one of the greatest things to have come into my life. To have the opportunity to help others locally and internationally is simply amazing; the possibilities are endless. To say I am surrounded by such wonderful people is an understatement. As fellow Rotarians and I say, ‘It feels good to do good.’ I have made solid connections, bonds and family members through this amazing organization, all while impacting the lives of those in need.

I apply Rotary’s 4-Way Test in my professional and personal life, which has served as a moral compass for me.”

After college, Deluca became a volunteer firefighter for two years but had to give it up because of an injury.

“From there I looked around and said well now what? I started my career in banking and when I went to Kearny Bank the first thing I did was look for a Rotary Club because it just means so much to me.

The signs were all around town with their logo and where and when to meet. I reached out and started asking questions.

It turns out that the club had dissolved years ago. There wasn’t a succession plan, and the charter had expired and that was it.”

“I said to myself well I’m here in town and I’m making some good connections why not just start a club?”

Since working out of Kearny, Deluca has spearheaded the creation of the Kearny Rotary.

“The first couple of months it was tough. It was mostly

prospecting and educating the people on what Rotary was. We held our first meeting in December 2017. It was a monthly effort to get people acclimated. Eventually word spread and it grew.”

Deluca expects the charter for the Kearny Club to be approved in late April or May. Before Deluca left Caldwell, they had a service project in the Dominican Republic where they had built a clinic. “We held a grand opening and did a diabetes screening. We were meeting people in a very impoverished area who needed help and we were there for them.”

“We visited the local school house. The children had no shoes, and everything we looked at was in shambles. The

roof had holes in it. The library had bookshelves that were broken. They had a few books, but they were very old. The restroom was a shack outside leaning over ready to collapse.

It just broke my heart.”

“We had a small party and we were singing and dancing with them. The kids just couldn’t believe it. There was one little boy, maybe six years old. He pulled my shirt to get my attention and he reached in his pocket and gave me this individually wrapped piece of hard candy. I knew that this was the only thing he had, and he wanted me to have it. It was his way of saying thank you. I still have that piece of candy and will never give it up. I’d like to do something like that with our new club.”

he Garden State Yacht Club on Lake Hopatcong will offer a US Coast Guard-sanctioned boating safety course on Sat. May 4.

Given in one day, students are eligible to receive the NJ Boating Safety Certificate at the completion of the course and

passing the exam. All boaters are required by New Jersey law to have this certificate.

Students Luke Maida and Lina Minichino earned the honorable awards on March 6 for the 7th & 8th Grade Basketball League First-Year Awards, given to one male and one female recreation basketball player for outstanding sportsmanship, leadership, and ability. All recreational basketball teams in the area were considered by league coaches and other officials who voted on both the boy’s and girl’s awards, and judge not only on the students’ ability to play basketball well but, and maybe even more importantly, on said students’ clearly displayed grasp of sportsmanship and leadership qualities.

Luke’s mother Nikki also expressed how very proud she is of her son and his win.

“I’ve always pressed upon my kids to be humble and kind, and this reward shows me I did something right,” Nikki stated. “Winning or losing means nothing, because when you play recreational it’s more about teamwork and everyone playing together and having fun, and not so much about constantly scoring and winning,” Mr. Al Josephsen, a founding member of the Caldwell-West Caldwell (CWC) Recreation Commission which began in 1947, created the Boys 7th & 8th Grade Basketball League First Year Award. Due to its popularity, some years later in 1963, Kay Slattery, a community advocate who proudly served on the CWC Board

of Education and as a Caldwell councilwoman, supplemented the Basketball League awards by developing the Girls 7th & 8th Grade Basketball League FirstYear Award.

West Caldwell Councilman Michael Crudele, who presented Lina Minichino with the award, said that he was lucky to watch her play, improve, and grow as a recreation basketball player for the past three years, and also how she exemplifies the definition of teamwork and sportsmanship.

“After many years coaching recreation basketball, and getting to know Lina quite well, it was my pleasure to present her with the Kay Slattery award.

“I try my best to be a good team player, work hard, and have fun, and I am very happy to have received this award,” Lina said.

Sportsmanship is perhaps the most important quality in sports and competition: To paraphrase the old saying, win or lose, it’s all about how you play. A strong sense of fairness, respect, graciousness, and generosity towards your teammates, as well as your opponents, is what sportsmanship is all about.

Good sportsmanship is also extended toward the coaches, officials, parents, and fans,

and should be practiced by all. And it is undeniably a very good thing that over the past few decades, embracing and teaching true sportsmanship has become much more crucial to children and adults than years past when bullying and teasing were more accepted and blandly tolerated.

“It was such a proud moment to see her accept this award,” Lina’s mother, Pattie, shared. “Lina works hard and gives it her best all the time.

each other, but it’s also important to have a positive attitude, give your greatest and best effort, always shake hands with your opponents before and after the game, verbally support teammates on both sides by saying out loud “nice try,” or “good shot,” and never criticize any team member on either side.

Being a good sport means to accept the judges’ and officials’ calls and decisions, and to never argue with them.

Show respect to the opposing team and never tease or bully anyone, always follow the rules, address when another player has fallen or slipped and help them up (younger sports teams are encouraged to “take a knee” and kneel down where they currently

stand at play when a member has fallen or gotten hurt), take pride in winning but don’t be obnoxious or rude by rubbing it in. By the same token, accept a loss without whining, getting angry, or making excuses.

By being a good sport, you learn respect for others as well as graciousness, acceptance, and self-control, which arguably can help you manage many other aspects of your life as you grow. They’re also key skills toward becoming a mature, respectful, and successful adult. As far as receiving an award for such a good human character? As Nikki Maida shared: “The greatest honor one can receive is one of leadership and sportsmanship.”

Turtle Back Zoo’s Turtle Rescue Sets Turtles Free

By Dawn M Chiossi ver at West Orange Turtle Back Zoo, it’s like having the world in the backyard, filled with animals to discover and learn about. One of the most interesting of those animals are the sea turtles.

On February 26th, Turtle Recovery officials were thrilled to announce that they set free seven injured sea turtles back into the wild. There’s something majestic about these sea creatures. They are one of the most ancient of animals, having been around for an extraordinary 110 million years. Unfortunately, all species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered.

The Sea Turtle Recovery Organization, located inside the Turtle Back Zoo, opened its doors in December of 2016.

This non-profit is the only long-term care organization for sea turtles in New Jersey.

More importantly, they are advocates for these creatures helping them to survive.

They have helped approximately 37 sea turtles to date.

According to Co-Executive Officer of the Sea Turtle Recovery, Brandi Biehl, sea turtles can become endangered for all kinds of reasons including boat propeller strikes, illness, trash ingestion and much more. Sea turtles are different from other turtles because their shell is streamlined for swimming through the water. Unlike other turtles, where retracting into their shell is a defense mechanism and a protective action--sea turtles cannot do this.

In a very real way, it makes them vulnerable.

In the case of these recently rescued seven sea turtles, they were cold stunned in Cape Cod Bay. That’s where the efforts of Sea Turtle Recovery come in. They are responsible for the vet care, medicine, surgeries, staffing, education, and other needs of sea turtles. Even more, these passionate people are advocates for these sick and injured creatures. Their mission is to set them free once they re-

cover.

The inspiration for the Sea Turtle Recovery Center came from two devoted marine scientists, Bill Deerr and Brandi Biehl seeking to provide injured sea turtles in New Jersey the same kind of immediate long term care that other sea turtle recovery centers out of state have.

That way the turtles do not have to endure stressful travel outside of the state.

“A number of sea turtles came in when they failed to migrate to warm water before temperatures become too cold. They stop eating and become lethargic, they need help to survive. While sea turtles do not nest in New Jersey, four species use our coast frequently for feeding and travel,” Biehl explains.

Before being set free, the turtles were microchipped to be studied.

So why aid sea turtles? These creatures are important to humans regarding food sources--green sea turtles will graze on and control sea grass for fish nurseries that will ultimately provide us with food.

According to Biehl, sea turtles can be an indicator species as well. That means if their populations get sick and start washing ashore in massive numbers, they may indicate problems with their and our food supply such as crab, clams, fish and other seafood that is so very beneficial to the ecosystem.

“In a world that seems so full of negative stories and events, you only have to look so far as the sea turtle for hope,” Biehl shares. “Some of these turtles come in with a weak pulse, failed kidneys, propeller cuts all the way through their shells, ingestion of balloons...they have every reason not to survive, but they never give up. Even when they are in shallow water kiddie pools that are just inches deep, they push themselves off of the bottom and try to gain strength to swim, they take deep breaths and lift their heads high, they eat or respond to tube feeding and never give up. Each day they fight to survive...They inspire hope by beating the odds over and over.”
