the event. Pascale said, “We want to toast and celebrate them. We have such wonderful residents.” Larkey added, “It warms our heart and makes this community what it is.” Pascale and Larkey presented the seniors with gifts of flowers and Caldwell Library tote bags. And students from Wilson School K-Kids, affiliated with the Kiwanis Club, created handmade birthday cards. Accordion stroller, Eric Kerssen, kept the party going with great tunes including: “The Way You Look Tonight,” “That’s Amore,” “Sunny Side of the Street,” “Young at Heart,” “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” “It’s Now or Never,” “Spanish Eyes,” and the top song from 1927 – one hundred years ago – “Someone to Watch Over Me.” And, of course, “Happy Birthday” was played while birthday cake was passed out. Mary Nolfi, 95, of Caldwell, said she attributes her long life to being physically and mentally fit. Weather permitting, she walks every day. “God’s been good,” she said. Kay Pollala, 92, has been a Caldwell resident for 40 years. “Moderation in everything,” is her mantra.

Betty Matey, 102, of Caldwell, feels she’s lived a long life because she has “that good Irish blood.” Marie Gallo, 90, of Caldwell, believes she’s lived this long because of health and happiness. Joe Emmanuelle, 96, of West Caldwell, thanks his family of seven children for keeping him going. Jane Young, 95, of Caldwell, swims five days a week and does water aerobics. She’s a charter member of the Caldwell Community Center for the past 17 years. She also enjoys reading and going out. Young lives in the same apartment complex as Peter Pirrello, 92, who was sit-
ting at her side. She said, “He’s my boyfriend, but we don’t live together.” According to Young, she and Pirrello have been dating for 20 years. Two husbands predeceased her. Jokingly, she said, “My daughter worried that I’d kill him [Pirrello] too.” Tom Calandra, 100, said being a hard worker kept him young. He worked in construction and always exercised. Toby Santoro, 103, of Caldwell, was the oldest of the celebrators. He said he stays young by “eating the right foods – Italian, pasta, and bread.” Former library board member, Carol Shenuski,
attended the event in honor of her late mother, Eleanor Shenuski who passed away December 2015 and would have been 95 this year. The Caldwell Public Library celebrated their centennial on June 17 with a plaque unveiling designating the library as Caldwell’s First Historic Landmark Building. The library was designed by noted local historian and architect, Lynn G. Lockward, and built with a donation from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It opened its doors to the public 100 years ago.
