Millburn’s Star: Anne Hathaway Recognized with Special Hollywood Honor

By: Megan Roche here is every award in the book for actresses, one might think that a Tony or Oscar would be the greatest honor one can receive. That said, you haven’t truly made your mark in Hollywood until you have that pink and gold star on Hollywood Boulevard and a hometown Millburn girl most recently got hers. Millburn-raised Anne Hathaway now has that shiny piece of sidewalk with her name on it as she officially received her Walk of Fame star in a ceremony on May 9. Her acting career started very early on in the halls of Millburn High School and on the stage at Paper Mill Playhouse. She even earned a Rising Star award nomination for her work as Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress. Hathaway grew up in Short Hills where she attended Wyoming Elementary School in Millburn. She graduated from Millburn High School but left a legacy on the stage. In a 2015 interview, Mickey McNany, then director of theater school at Paper Mill Playhouse, was highly impressed with Hathaway from the start, but knew she’d get far. “As far as main stage thrills for me, I would have to say certainly seeing Annie Hathaway who took her first class here in the theatre school and then the conservatory be so brilliant
in Jane Eyre and Gigi.” McNany said. After her humble beginnings at Paper Mill, Hathaway starred in countless stage shows. Some of her more prominent roles include a schoolgirl in Jane Eyre and another supporting role in Gigi at Paper Mill. Her big break came when she was just 18 years old when she landed the starring role as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries. Hathaway is no stranger to the spotlight; she practically grew up on the stage. Her mother, Kate McCauley, has acted in multiple shows. As she spent time backstage in different theaters, Hathaway fell in love with acting. Much to her dismay, both her parents did not want her to pursue a career in acting. Now acting in movies, Hathaway can be seen in the Princess Diaries, Oceans 8, Les Miserable, The Devil Wears Prada, Bride Wars, The Dark Knight Rises, Ella Enchanted, and Becoming Jane. She has also offered her voice to characters in multiple episodes of The Simpsons and Family Guy. As she accepted her star on the Walk of Fame during the ceremony in May, Hathaway made a long speech, thanking the many people who helped her on her rise to fame, including that of her diehard fans. “What really makes me
excited about this is thinking about it as a shared thing. It makes me so excited that this star can be a space where my incredible fans, who are the reason that this piece of land has been named for me, can pour their own loving vibrant spirit. This is a spot that has meaning to me because of you. You are why I am standing here.” Hathaway said during the ceremony. During the ceremony, Hathaway pointed out that much of her success came from the people who believed in her talents at a young age. With a wide range of thanks to mention, Hathaway offered her
words of appreciation to her family to round out her speech. “The gift of being the focus and recipient of your tremendous and enlightened love is along with motherhood, the most important and profound part of my very blessed life. I am able to walk through this world as I do because you make me feel safe, held, seen, and adored.” Hathaway said. Attending the ceremony with Hathaway were her husband, Adam Shulman, her parents, and many friends. Hathaway’s star marks the 2,663rd time a star has been awarded. Her star is located at 6927 Hollywood Blvd.
