Maplewood Woman Brings People to the “Emotional Gym” through Femme

By Megan Roche hen one sits down and speaks with Bernadette Pleasant, her last name represents exactly what that conversation is like. The 55-yearold comes from quite the strict upbringing, where using her voice was looked down upon. Growing up as a Jehovah Witness, Pleasant was given an ultimatum at the age of 17; either marry her then boyfriend or never see him again. She wanted to prove her doubters wrong, so she made the choice to marry him.

“Dating casually was not an option, you had to date to marry. What I was noticing was people making decisions, I felt restriction and the inability to be angry about this or sad about this. I was putting on a mask to feign happiness. I didn’t know what happy looked like because I didn’t see it. There was this never being allowed to show the feeling that I felt. After 10 years, I knew I didn’t want to do this religion thing anymore. It appeases my family, but it didn’t make me happy and I just said I was done,” Pleasant recalled about her past.

After divorcing after 10 years of marriage, Bernadette was eventually excommunicated from the Jehovah Witness faith.

According to the Jehovah Witness faith, unless there is abuse or cheating, a woman truly has no reason to leave her husband.

After her excommunication, she became depressed and was in a mental state that

often had her thinking about suicide as a way out.

“Leaving was the best thing I ever did. I reached a tipping point and I didn’t want to feel that restriction where I couldn’t have my own opinions. I just thought, no more of this bound living. It was also very hard on me because my leaving wasn’t an option according to the religion. I was considered to be doing something that just wasn’t okay.

I didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that I wasn’t doing this religion thing anymore,” Pleasant said.

After her battles, Pleasant has decided that she wants to give people the gift of learning how to use their voices and that’s when Femme was born. Femme is a 90 minute class that has taken Pleasant all over the country. While attending a Femme class, Pleasant takes students through the emotional tour, finding out what the emotions of happiness, joy, grief, and more mean to each individual person in her class.

Her class encourages movement and has live African drums that play throughout the 90 minute session. Pleasant compares her class as the emotional version of going to the gym.

“My work requires that people take the mask off. I do it in a way that nobody is feeling totally exposed and uncomfortable. But, my class has a serious emphasis on healing and doing better and without using those therapy buzzwords. I make people comfort-

able enough where they feel that they don’t have to run toward the door or send someone into a spiral of a traumatic experience.

I want people to carry less weight and feel like they have truly left something behind in my class,” Pleasant shared.

According to the Femme website, Femme is a movement experience that passionately fuses primal movement, sensual dance, meditation, creative visualization and celebration of the human form.

Inspired by African, Tribal and Free Dance interwoven with the somatic and primal

healing arts, Femme! creates sacred, safe spaces and invites everyone to reclaim and boldly display their power.

“I love music. That hypnotic thing that happens when live drums are playing allows someone to disconnect the self-imposed judgements about looking good and not wanting to look messy. The drums help usher in freedom and that’s a beautiful place to be,” Pleasant shared.

Seton Hall University and WSOU Honor Bob Ley, Legendary Sportscaster and 1976 Alum

By: Megan Roche hile he’s won many awards and gone on to major networks and has anchored many major sporting events, Bob Ley has never forgot where he came from. The Bloomfield, NJ native got his start at Seton Hall University and he was recently honored by the folks at the school’s radio station, WSOU. Ley fell in love with the journalism profession long before he entered the classrooms at Seton Hall. From his early beginnings, providing commentary as a correspondent for local newspaper, the Bloomfield boy knew that he wanted to be on the radio. A first-generation college grad, Seton Hall was where it all started.

“I was into sports and I was doing a little sports work about Seton Hall on a small radio station and I was a correspondent for lots of local newspapers on high school sports. I knew I wanted to study journalism and WSOU was the most visible arm of the school that I could see. WSOU is the entire reason I went to Seton Hall,” Ley said.

Ley began his freshman year at Seton Hall in 1972. After joining WSOU, he involved himself fully in the station, taking on many jobs and responsibilities. During his years at WSOU, Ley has served as sports director, program director, and engineer. He also produced play by play content for basketball and baseball games. After graduating, he landed several jobs in the New York and New Jersey area and also served as the PA for the New York Cosmos soccer team. In

1979, Ley began with a new sports channel start up, leaving his comfortable job at Suburban Cable TV 3. That sports channel start up? The network now known as ESPN. “I was coming from a job at Suburban Cablevision TV 3 where I joined the station from blueprints and saw it through to where we were winning major awards. I saw the benefit of being with an organization from the drop and having a blank canvas and having the chance to do whatever your abilities and see where the experiences will take you. I took the ESPN offer which now would have been a no brainer, but 40 years ago, it was a no brainer in the other direction,” Ley said.

Ley returned to his alma mater on Feb. 23 as the Seton Hall Pirates took on the Saint John’s Red Storm to provide commentary on the game played at Prudential Center. This was Ley’s first time back in the broadcast booth since he graduated in 1976. Ley was joined on the broadcast by current WSOU Sports Director, Dalton Allison, and commentator Michael Daly.

“I was so excited to have Bob join us at the broadcast booth,” Allison said. “Just sitting next to him and working with him, I was so impressed by his cadence and play by play work. The day was a great day for the WSOU family.

To be able to have a brother like him in the professional industry, made the day so awesome. It was a great day to be a Pirate. For me personally, this was a dream come true. I continued on page 5

Supply and Demand, Hoarding, Price Gouging -- and the Coronavirus

As the saying goes, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” I would add, “and anti-price gouging legislation in times of crisis.” Yet price increases in the face of sudden shortages are an important impetus to restore supply and demand market conditions that are closer to normal.

As many of us have experienced in the past few weeks, buying toilet paper, hand sanitizer and face masks has become more difficult and more expensive.

The reason, of course, is that unusually large numbers of people are rushing to buy these and other products that might prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It’s normal for people to stock up on supplies during crises. The immediate results are empty store shelves, soon followed by higher prices.

When this happens, politicians around the globe demand an end to the price hikes. The goal is to improve consumer access to the products now in higher demand.

In New Jersey, for instance, at least 10 retailers have received warnings from the government to stop their so-called price gouging. Similarly, the French government announced that it won’t tolerate such price increases and will soon decree a price ceiling on face masks and hand sanitizers. In a move guaranteed to worsen and lengthen the shortages, French officials are even going so far as to appropriate stocks of masks. Just this week, the Department of Justice threatened to act against “bad actors” who raise prices during this time of panic. The list goes on and on.

While well-intentioned, such heavy-handed intervention is a mistake on many levels: First, the rise in prices conveys nothing more than the unusually intense surge in demand for these products. Consumers

Mark Shields value these products more now than they did just a few weeks ago, which is reflected by the higher prices.

But here’s another reality: If prices are kept artificially low, there’s little incentive for shoppers not to buy as much as they can. Of course, only those shoppers lucky enough to get to the stores first can do so. Their hoarding then leaves nothing for shoppers in line behind them.

The fact is there’s no better means of slowing the rising demand -- and, especially, reducing excessive hoarding -- than allowing the very price hikes that governments are trying to prevent.

But price hikes have another important advantage: They create the necessary incentives for entrepreneurs to shift resources toward activities that increase the supply of these goods.

The higher prices encourage higher levels of production for goods like masks and hand sanitizers, which then increases supply. Even some companies that couldn’t afford to produce these goods in the past will be prompted by high prices to now do so. The Japanese electronics giant Sharp started to use its TV factories to make surgical masks when the domestic continued on page 6

think I’m where most sane people are on the coronavirus outbreak: -Concerned but not panicked.

-Calm but not apathetic.

-Taking reasonable precautions but remaining skeptical of what all the purportedly “best experts” here in the United States are telling us about every aspect of their belated crisis management and response (especially on their pimping of vaccine development to prevent the disease).

Here are some plain, nonhysterical facts: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is a bloated federal government agency with a long history of incompetence, fraud, secrecy, mission creep and shady alliances with both social justice causes on the left and private corporations on the big business right. The “deep state” of entrenched bureaucrats embedded in the Beltway bowels is alive and thriving at the CDC. The unelected elites who’ve occupied top offices at the public health-industrial complex are hostile to public scrutiny while clamoring for ever-ballooning budgets. Their recommendations have often been detrimental to citizens’ well-being and freedom.

And, yes, many of the scientists who work there are rabidly anti-conservative and anti-Trump.

It’s a brazen lie that President Donald Trump “slashed” CDC funding, which is being used as an excuse for the agency’s coronavirus unpreparedness. Cognitively impaired and truth-challenged Joe Biden made the claim during last week’s Democratic debate that these purported “Draconian cuts” put Americans at risk. But Trump’s budget proposal to cut some sliver of CDC fat has never been enacted, and Congress increased funding, instead.

At nearly $7 billion, CDC’s annual budget is more than 200% larger than it was two decades ago. On top of that, a shady big business lobbying group called Corporate Friends of CDC has raised hundreds of millions of supplemental dollars -- which raises serious conflict-of-interest

Tom Coburn’s fiscal audit of the agency discovered vulgar expenditures including CDC syphilis prevention funds spent to host a “safe-sex” event with a porn star, CDC HIV/AIDS prevention funds spent on a transgender beauty pageant, and $45 million in CDC funding spent on conferences featuring prostitutes, protests and beach parties.

Despite the flood of money, the agency been caught flat-footed on outbreak after outbreak. They squander untold millions on other health threats in favor of pushing gun control and nanny state hobby horses (TV violence, helmet laws, video games, anti-bullying campaigns and explicit sex education, for example). CDC has one primary job -- Disease Control -- but has managed to botch it without ever learning from past failures.

Let me remind you of some of the CDC’s long history of royal screw-ups: -The notorious 1976 swine flu vaccine scandal was catalyzed by mass hysteria whipped up by CDC junk scientists clamoring for more money; Congress obliged and nearly 45 million Americans were unnecessarily jabbed with a vaccine for a disease that had fizzled by the time the shots were ready. grew up watching Bob Ley on SportsCenter and then to see me on SportsCenter with him, it was absolutely wild. It was a surreal moment for myself and also for my family as well.”

Before the game, Ley was honored with a reception where alumni gathered to thank him for all his service through the years. Amongst attendees were classmates that he had not seen in over 40 years. The folks at Seton Hall also held a pregame ceremony on the court to recognize his career.

When he retired from ESPN in June of 2019, Ley had notched many holes in his career belt. Ley has anchored a number of World Cups, covered the World Series earthquake in 1989, called the World Cup in Paris when the French team was victorious, being part of SportsCenter and Outside the Lines since the beginning, and so many more. While he has had an incredible 40-year career with the network, Ley has always remained true to the Seton Hall student run radio station, WSOU. “It was a great experience to be sitting at the WSOU desk and to be calling a game.

There were also so many people at this event to honor me, some of them I haven’t seen in years. It was also great to see the

students on the current staff and young alums. It made me feel overwhelmed and what I tried to leave with them was that we all have something to offer to this world and to this school. It’s all about staying involved and helping those who come after you and giving values to the programs there.” Ley said.

WSOU General Manager Mark Maben was quick to note what Ley and other alumni mean to the radio station and why honoring Ley was so important.

“I hear alum after alum tell me that no matter what they have gone on to do, their experience at WSOU has been extremely helpful to them in their careers. I think that reflects the high standard that everyone at the station holds themselves to. Bob speaks often about the critical role WSOU played in launching his career and through the decades he has taken the time to mentor and encourage generations of students who were following in his footsteps at WSOU,” Maben said. “With Bob entering retirement, we felt it was important for the station to honor him for both his extraordinary career and all that he has done for the station and the campus community.”

-In 1999, the CDC misspent $22.7 million appropriated for chronic fatigue syndrome

and was investigated in 2001 for squandering $13 million on hepatitis C research.

-In 2000, the agency essentially lied to Congress about how it spent up to $7.5 million earmarked each year since 1993 for research on the deadly hantavirus. “Instead,

Government officials (and pundits) never seem to learn (or remember) that in times of crisis, naturally rising prices are necessary to guarantee that goods, services and inputs are used to maximum social advantage.

When governments prevent price hikes, they unwittingly (SET ITAL)create(END ITAL) shortages of vital supplies. Unfortunately, such government intervention makes it harder for people to recover from disasters or, today, to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

Think about it. Without price fluctuations to provide a signal to manufacturers, how will they know by how much or how quickly they need to increase production? If prices are kept artificially low, factory owners have no way to know for sure that actual demand (and not just hoarding) has risen enough to justify a change in their production schedules. Second, if governments keep prices from adjusting upward, the additional demand for masks might not result in enough

revenue to cover the extra costs of producing and shipping more masks.

The bottom line is that by keeping prices artificially low, governments around the world encourage artificially high demand, from hoarders, for example. Necessary increases to the supply chain will also be discouraged, which results in unnecessary shortages, long lines of desperate customers, empty shelves and black markets in dark alleys.

Aren’t we better off when products are actually on the shelves and available for purchase, even if only at higher prices? When no such products are to be found, except by the politically and socially connected, ordinary citizens lose out.

apparently without asking Congress, the CDC spent much of the money on other programs that the agency thought needed the funds more,” The Washington Post disclosed at the time. The diversions were impossible to trace because of shoddy CDC bookkeeping practices.

-In 2009, the CDC recalled 800,000 doses of swine flu vaccine for children ages 6 months to 3 years after the products manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur failed potency tests.

-In 2012, the CDC’s main building housing infectious anthrax, SARS and monkeypox gases was discovered to have been leaking deadly pathogens due to a flawed engineered airflow system.

-In 2014, the CDC’s lackadaisical response to Ebola virus gave the greenlight to Patient Zero Thomas Eric Duncan and infected medical personnel to board commercial airlines while ill -- exposing untold numbers of travelers to the deadly disease. Expensive isolation chambers that had been subsidized by taxpayers to the tune of $15 million sat buried in a Georgia warehouse.

-For the past few years, the agency has employed a fear campaign to induce Americans to get regular flu shots (formulated based on guesswork) using flawed statistics and despite international scientific conclusions that there is “no evidence” to support the CDC’s assumptions that the vaccine reduces transmission of the virus or the risk of

potentially deadly complications.

-Just this week, the Informed Consent Action Network reported astonishing results from its lawsuit against the CDC to obtain scientific documentation for the agency’s claim that “vaccines do not cause autism” -- specifically for the first seven vaccines given to your child in their first six months of life. CDC had stonewalled, and then finally produced 20 studies -- 18 of which were irrelevant to ICAN’s public records request and two of which suggest that vaccines may indeed cause autism. In other words: The CDC is lying while continuing to smear vaccine critics as “conspiracy theorists” and public health threats.

As if to underscore my point about this agency’s misdirected priorities and rank political pandering, the CDC director this week found it more urgent to condemn Republicans as racist for accurately describing the origins of the virus from Wuhan, China, than to do his job.

Informed diagnosis: The “best people” -- who have now been rewarded with more than $8.3 billion in new “emergency funding” -- are not in charge.

Vetfest Presents Music and Food Trucks This May

By Megan Roche s winter comes to an end, people are itching to breakout those lawn chairs and blankets, longing for days of sunny weather and blue skies. On May 3 (raindate: May 17), head out to Roxbury’s Horseshoe Lake for a day of fun that benefits the greater community of homeless veterans.

Rich Goldberg, the mastermind behind Vetfest, was looking for a way to continue his efforts in helping the state’s homeless veteran population. Through his work volunteering for Community Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Goldberg has come to know many veterans throughout the area who have simply fallen on hard times.

With a passion for music as well, Goldberg combined the two and decided on a concert to benefit them. The first ever Vetfest was held in 2019 and was a major success, raising over $24,000.

On May 3, beginning at 12:00 noon, Horseshoe Lake at Succasunna will be grooving, all for a good cause. Vetfest has the best of food trucks and talent coming together to help New Jersey’s homeless veterans. Goldberg is encouraging families to come and spend the day, with lawn chairs and blankets in tow.

“I’ve gotten to know so many of these veterans throughout our area. These veterans are humble people and grateful people.

All they want to do is get back on their feet, and if we can give them a little step up, a little assistance, that’s really what it’s all about. They did their job and went out and served and did everything for us, and now what I ask people to do, is just to come out and have a fun day.” Goldberg said.

This is all about our veterans. The important thing is to give these vets who have given so much for us, we want to give them a great day, all while raising money to support them. To be able to give them a great afternoon, just like anyone else coming out, that’s what we ultimately want to do.” Goldberg stated proudly.

At the time this article was written, bands were still signing up to come and donate their time with a performance. Currently scheduled are The Frontiers, a Journey tribute band, A Brothers Revival, an Allman Brothers tribute band, Sensational Soul Cruisers, a Motown and R&B band, The Best of the Eagles, an Eagles tribute band, and New York State of Mind, a Billy Joel tribute band.

Early bird prices are $10 for adults, $6 for children, and $25 per family. Ticket pricing after April 15th are $15 for adults, $10 for children, and $35 per family.

An important part of the event, for Goldberg, is allowing children and families to meet some of the folks who benefit from those who attend. There will be plenty of veterans and veteran related organizations present on the day of the event to offer insight and information so bring as many questions as you’d like.

“My dad taught me that when you see someone in uniform, you thank them. My son is 16 and he will not see a servicemember without walking up to them and saying thank you. I wish everybody would teach their kids to respect and honor them because without them, we have nothing.”

Goldberg said.

Dr. Matthew Whelan is Named Next President of Caldwell University

he Board of Trustees of Caldwell University has chosen Dr. Matthew Whelan as the next president of the Catholic Dominican university.

A native of New Jersey, Whelan will become the ninth president of Caldwell and the first male lay president in the history of the institution, effective on July 1.

Dr. Whelan is currently Vice President for University Enrollment Strategy and Relationship Development at Stony Brook University which serves undergraduate, graduate and professional program students from across the U.S. and around the world. Since 2006, he has held key leadership roles at Stony Brook in undergraduate and graduate admissions, financial aid, registrar, enrollment management, student services, fundraising, facilities and strategic planning for several campuses. He previously served as the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Stony Brook.

Laurita Warner, chair of Caldwell University’s Board of Trustees, said that following a national search, the board is pleased to welcome Dr. Whelan. “I speak for all the trustees who are excited and invigorated by the skills, experience and passion Matt will bring to Caldwell University. We value his commitment to our Catholic Dominican tradition and are confident in his ability to innovate and further our upward trajectory of success at Caldwell.”

He has expansive experience leading administrative and faculty teams at Catholic and public higher education institutions including St. John’s University, Hofstra Univer-

sity, William Paterson University and Mercyhurst College.

Dr. Whelan has held a number of positions on national higher education boards and associations, presented nationally and internationally on issues impacting higher education, coached a women’s soccer team to a NCAA Division II Final Four appearance, and taught graduate students in higher education administration. He holds a master’s from William Paterson University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Dowling College in Shirley, New York.

Caldwell was founded in 1939 by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell. Archbishop Thomas Joseph Walsh became the institution’s first president, followed by Mother Joseph Dunn, O.P., who first envisioned the college. Since that time women have held the presidency.

James Caldwell High School Senior to Attend West Point

By Steve Sears ames Caldwell High School senior, Mackenzie Courtright, will call New York state home for the next four years.

Courtright, who is 18, will be stationed at West Point as a member of the United States Military Academy. She will be a student there and will be commissioned into the army after graduation.

“West Point is one of the top engineering schools,” Courtright says. “After speaking with a recruiter over the summer, I began to research West Point more and determined it was a school I was interested in.”

Courtright’s grandfather on her dad's side and great-grandfather on her mom's side both served in the United States Military, but it didn't have much of an influence in her decision to apply. She, therefore, is the first in her family to attend USMA. For Courtright, who received a nomination from New Jersey state Senator Cory Booker, the application process consisted of composing many essays, passing the Candidate Fitness Assessment, passing DoDMERB (Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board), and ultimately receiving a nomination. “The timeframe for me,” she says, “was starting the application process over the summer in August and receiving an appointment in early February.”

Courtright received a call from Sen. Booker’s office, informing her of her acceptance and offering his congratulations. “Helping select our next generation of military leaders is a great honor and tremendous responsibility,” says Sen. Booker. “I am thankful for New Jerseyans like Mack-

enzie who are devoting themselves to the service of this nation. Acceptance to a United States service academy is an enormous accomplishment, and I know Mackenzie will represent our state and our country well.”

In addition, Courtright was recently awarded a Summit Award from the Boy Scouts of America. “Venturing Crew is a part of the Boy Scouts of America. I have been a part of Venturing Crew 59 since 2015. Venturing is co-ed Boy Scouts for older Scouts aged between 14 and 21. It is focused on learned leadership skills, service, and high adventure trips and activities. I have held the positions of Treasurer, Vice President of Programs, Vice President of Administration, and President during my time with the crew and have had many other opportunities, including the chance to staff National Youth Leadership Training, attend the 2017 National Jamboree, and attend SeaBase Bahamas.”

Courtright credits her parents, Gregory and Jeanne, with choices she’s made through her teenage years that presented the opportunity. Her parents say, “We are both so very proud of her. She has worked very hard for everything she has accomplished. We are excited to see where this journey will take her.”

Beckerath Organ at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Celebrates 50th Anniversary

By Steve Sears Beckerath organ, which was built specifically in 1970 for St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Millburn, is celebrating a very special 50th anniversary in 2020.

A series of three recital concerts, one held in November 2019, and one each in February and April of 2020, were scheduled as a highlight.

“The organ at St Stephen’s is unusual in that it is just one of a handful of instruments made by the noted German organ builder, Rudolf von Beckerath, in the eastern United States,” says John Schucker, organist for the church. “It’s installation at St. Stephen’s came at a time when there was a general movement towards recreating Baroque instruments of all kinds to play the music of that era. Nowadays it is quite common to hear the music of Bach, Händel, and Vivaldi played on period instruments, but in 1970, the congregation of St. Stephen’s was very forward thinking in choosing this style of organ.”

The organ was specifically built to fit into a prominent spot in the church, which was built in 1855. “Organs in churches and auditoriums are incorporated into their settings in many different ways,” explains Schucker. “Sometimes most of the instrument is hidden away in compartments as indeed the former instrument at St. Stephen’s was, with just a single row of pipes visible in an arched opening into the church.

The Beckerath organ instead is free standing in the rear of the sanctuary, rising to the very tall ceiling of the church. An antique Baroque organ would have had a richly carved and highly ornamented case. The organ at St. Stephen’s has the austere, modern era design of 1970, but it blends well with the simple carpenter gothic design of the church interior

with its plain, dark, wooden beams and columns.”

For Schucker - whose February recital included works

by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Gottfried Walther, rarely heard pieces by a 20th Century composer named Hugo Distler, and a concluding Sonata by Felix Mendelssohn - playing the Beckerath organ is a pure joy. “The quality of craftsmanship of this instrument is unparalleled with any other organ I’ve known. It’s one of the reasons that I drive an hour from home each Sunday to play for the services there, not to mention the lovely group of people that make up the congregation of the church. In the 16 years I’ve been playing it, the only maintenance it has required besides regular tuning has been related to the electric components of it and not the instrument itself. This is unheard of, really.”

St. Stephen's, a small, intimate congregation, does an incredible amount of outreach to benefit the greater community. The Beckerath organ has been and is still a big part of that outreach. “I think it’s wonderful that they have dedicated resources for the past 50 years to sharing this unique instrument with the community through the organ recital series, giving people an opportunity to not only hear music performed on an instrument of exceptional quality, but also to hear performers from around the globe,” says Schucker.

“In fact, our final recital this season will feature Johann Vexo from the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris on April 19.”

Rev. Paula Toland adds the following. “The 50th anniversary of our Beckerath organ could not have come at a better time. In these days, when there is so much anxiety and fear, anger and hostility, celebrating this magnificent instrument means St. Stephen's is able to share beauty and continued on page 13

est Orange High School junior Justin Peters will represent the township as a National Youth Correspondent at the 2020 Washington Journalism and Media Conference, to be held at George Mason University in Washington, D.C. July 19-24.

Peters was selected based on academic accomplishment and excellence in journalism and media studies. He will participate with fellow National Youth Correspondents in handson learning simulations that

challenge problem-solving skills and explore the creative, and ethical tensions inherent in journalism and media.

Renowned speakers will include prominent journalists, CEOs of major media outlets, researchers, and well-known leaders in the media community.

Justin is involved in the Theater Arts program, the Thespian Society, Glee Choir (treasurer), Tri-M Music Honor Society, and is Entertainment Editor of The Pioneer. He is interested in attending Emerson College,

University of Rhode Island, Rider, SUNY New Paltz, or SUNY Purchase and plans to major in Journalism and Filmmaking/TV/Radio Studies.

Celebrate Earth Day with April 18 Stream Cleanup

Volunteer for Raritan Headwaters Association’s 30th annual Stream Cleanup on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, and see the difference thousands of helping hands can make! Helpers of all ages are needed, and the cleanup will be held rain or shine.

“It’s absolutely true that many hands make light work,” said Cindy Ehrenclou, executive director of the nonprofit watershed watchdog. “In just three hours last year, 1,700 volunteers removed 18 tons of trash and recyclables from 46 sites in Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris counties. They made a big impact in a very short time.”

This year, the 30th anniversary of the RHA Stream Cleanup falls only a few days before the 50th anniversary of Earth Day – a day dedicated to supporting environmental protection and celebrating clean air, water and land.

“The Stream Cleanup is in keeping with the spirit of Earth Day,” said Rebekah Buczynski, RHA’s Stream Cleanup coordinator. “Not only does it beautify local stream corridors, it also protects drinking water supplies and prevents litter from washing downstream to the Raritan Bay and Atlantic Ocean, where it can become a hazard to

marine life.”

sounded like excuses so I decided to check around and see if there was anywhere I could teach locally. I’ve always felt like I live here but I work elsewhere. I reached out to a local place and I think mindsets in the area have changed and there is more receptivity to different things. It’s a beautiful time in our world right now for people to look at something new and decide to try something new,” Pleasant shared.

Throughout her entire 90 minute class experience, Pleasant just hopes that people leave her class feeling some sort of emotional relief and that they can start to help

others.

“When people feel the brightness of learning to express their emotions, it translates. You can see when other people are struggling in their own emotional lives.

When you get clear and to be able to stand in your confidence of your emotions, it’s a very powerful thing,” Pleasant shared.

US Club Soccer Announces Roster for 2020 id2 National Selection Boys Team, Two from Northern New Jersey

The 2020 id2 National Selection International Tour signifies the final programming element of the age group cycle targeting 2006born boys.

In 2011, the boys id2 National Selection team also traveled to England and Scotland, competing against Celtic, Everton and Manchester City. Over the course of id2 National Selection history, other trips have been to Spain, France, Argentina, Belgium, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. That geographical diversity has resulted in games against the likes of FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Boca Juniors, Juventus, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Ajax.

The delegation was immersed in elite competition against top academies and get exposed to English and Scottish cultures, helping these young players to grow on and off the pitch. This is the 11th consecutive international trip for the boys id2 Program, and program director Gerry McKeown

The 18 players selected for this trip began their journeys in northern New Jersey, as the team acclimated to each other in a brief domestic camp. Then, the id2 National Selection boys team traveled across the pond to Glasgow, Scotland, where it was based for four days, before transferring to London, England for the remainder of the tour.

identify the best talent in the United States, we are excited to challenge this talented group of players by playing the best teams in the U.K.,” says id2 Boys Program Director Gerry McKeown.

I Remember Dad: Reflections of Dad’s Camp Meeting Sermons

M

By Richard Mabey Jr. ost people know that my Dad was a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 for over 25 years. And, most people know that my Dad served as Vice President of the Beavertown Historical Society for over 10 years. But, very few people know that my Dad served as a Lay Leader of the Boonton United Methodist Church for nearly 20 years.

Dad was also served with a Christian outreach group that presented evangelistic meetings for Methodist churches throughout the USA. Dad, with Mom’s supporting help, would present sermons for weekend camp meetings, mostly along the eastern seaboard. In time, my Dad developed a very sincere and earnest quality in his sermons.

To clarify, Dad would not be the only speaker on the agenda for the weekend evangelic camp meetings. A good dozen or so individuals would present sermons for the weekend meetings. Dad took this job very seriously. I was so very proud of him for his wholesome, down-to-earth, heart-felt stories that he would share during his Christian presentations.

Dad would draw upon his recollections of his years as a Scoutmaster, the people he met along his travels as a long-distance truck driver, his memories of serving in the Seventh Army Air Corps during World War II, and of course his role as a husband and father.

I was always impressed with the time that Dad spent studying and preparing for one of his sermons. This was

an era before home computers. So, my Dad had to study his Bible the old-fashioned way, without the benefit of Internet cross referencing. Dad loved the Gospel of John. He also often referred to the Book of Psalms and the Book of Proverbs, a lot of times in his Christian talks.

I remember that there was a distinct meter to my Dad’s sermons. Dad was not an emotional speaker. He did not raise his voice. He simply spoke in a most steadfast, compelling manner that rang with a truth of sincerity and a poetic earnest quality. I was always, all so proud of my Dad for all of his hard work to bring truth to the people who came to the camp meetings.

Now, that I’m 66 years old, I find myself reflecting more and more of all of my Dad’s wonderful accomplishments in his life. I so deeply regret that I never videotaped any of Dad’s sermons. They were often simple stories of life lessons and would have a Biblical reference. My father touched the lives of hundreds of hundreds of people with his camp meeting sermons, his many years of volunteer service as a Scoutmaster, his dedicated service to the Beavertown Historical Society, and his friendly spirit that flowed from his heart in his many journeys cross country in his job as a long-distance truck driver.

Founded by UNICEF’s Asia branch, Oky is the world’s first period tracking app co-created with girls, for girls. Packed with information vetted by global health experts, the app is tailored to Indonesian and Mongolian cultures and available in local dialects. To support further advancements in this sector, the app is open source, digitally inclusive and available even in areas where online access is limited. In its next phase, the organization plans to scale and adapt the app for use in East Africa.

3. Schools made from recycled plastic waste There are three significant problems facing children in Côte d’Ivoire: There are not enough schools, there are not enough employment opportunities for adults and there is an overabundance of trash. Daily, the Abidjan metropolitan area produces 288 tons of plastic waste. Tackling all three issues, UNICEF works with Conceptos Plásticos to employ women to recycle plastic into bricks to build classrooms. The bricks, which will be used to build more than 500 classrooms across the country this year, are 100% non-toxic plastic, fire- and wind-resistant, waterproof, insulated and lighter and quicker to assemble than regular bricks.

2. Drones that cut transport times from hours to minutes Drones help reduce carbon emissions and

cut transport times from 1.5 hours driving to 25 minutes flying. Leveraging technology, UNICEF works with drones to deliver crucial medical supplies to the hardest-to-reach areas. The African Drone and Data Academy in Malawi, a first-of-its-kind program, trains and certifies young students across the continent on building, operating and maintaining the drones, building a pipeline of future experts in the field.

1. A warehouse that can send lifesaving supplies to anywhere in the world With the world’s largest humanitarian supply warehouse, the UNICEF Supply Division is able to deliver necessities anywhere in the world as quickly as 48-72 hours. The size

of four football fields, the Copenhagen, Denmark warehouse is equipped with enough health kits, vaccines, rescue gear and more to support 200,000 people at any given time.

The warehouse is also home to an innovation lab that tests, designs and produces new and improved products needed in the field. In 2018, the supply network procured nearly $3.5 billion of goods and services for children in 175 countries and territories. In 2020, UNICEF expects to respond to around 300 emergencies and assist 95 million people with support.

pring is in the air and what better way to welcome the season than with computer classes at the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women.

Basic EXCEL will begin on Monday May 4th and is scheduled to run for six sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and Intro to WORD will begin on Tuesday May 5th and is scheduled to run for six sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. These classes are open to all women regardless of religious affiliation who want to improve their skills for job positions or who would just like to learn for their own personal use.

There is an $85 fee per course. Classes are held at the NCJW/Essex Center for Women 70 South Orange Avenue, Suite 120, Livingston and registration is required.

The Center for Women also offers lowcost career services for women who would like to enter or re-enter the workforce.

est Orange High School senior and AP Art student Ruth Donagher has been awarded a Silver Key in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards competition for her selfportrait.

Over 100 arts and literary organizations partner with Scholastic annually to select top works of art and literature from students spanning grades 7-12 in 29 categories. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Last year, Scholastic received over 350,000 entries for review.

"I am so proud of Ruth's accomplishment,” said WOHS AP Art teacher Heather Young, "and her passion for art and hard work deserves much recognition."

Donagher's award-winning self-portrait is only one in a series of recognitions for the talented artist. She has also received

two back-to-back Governor's awards for Costume and Set Design at the annual Thespian Festival Chapter Select Competition and designed an award-winning mural for the Nikhil Badlani Foundation featuring Nikhil's Pledge, now law in the State of New Jersey.

Students receiving Gold Keys, Silver Keys, Honorable Mentions, or American Voices & Visions Nominations are celebrated within their communities through local exhibitions and ceremonies.

“I’m very excited and honored to be at the Montclair Art Museum," exclaimed Donagher. "It’s a great opportunity to get out into the community and it’ll be a lot of fun to appreciate all of the hard work of the other students I’ll meet there."

5 Ways to Reduce Safety Risks for Young Children

s parents, one of your top priorities is the safety and well-being of your children. With all the potential pitfalls of day-to-day life, however, navigating the risks can be difficult.

These everyday safety tips can help you navigate everything from car seat safety to baby-proofing and safe sleep, keeping your child out of harm’s way as much as possible from birth through his or her toddler years.

Car Seat Safety Always use a valid (typically less than 6 years old), federally approved car seat in motor vehicles.

Ensure the seat is properly installed. Refer to the instruction manual with any questions.

If you use an infant carrier, strap your child in on the floor, never a counter or tabletop.

For at least the first two years of your child’s life, the car seat should be rear-facing.

The safest location for a car seat is in the middle of the back seat.

Choking Prevention Avoid giving your child nuts, popcorn, hard candies, hot dogs and raw fruits and vegetables, such as grapes or carrots, that may present a choking hazard.

Never prop up a bottle and leave your baby unattended.

Inspect toys often to ensure they’re not broken and do not have small pieces that could easily become detached.

Be cautious of strings and buttons on clothing.

Safe Sleep The safest place for your baby to sleep is on his or her back, which reduces the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Avoid placing anything in the crib or bassinet that may suffocate your child, such as pillows, blankets or bumpers.

Keep your child’s room at a moderate temperature and dress him or her appropriately to avoid overheating.

Never leave your baby alone on a bed, couch, changing table, swing or infant seat.

Water Safety Set your hot water heater no higher than 120 F. Test the temperature of bath water before setting your baby in the tub.

Never leave your baby unattended in the bathtub.

Keep toilet lids down and consider installing toilet lid locks.

Baby-Proofing Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and in every sleeping area.

Secure cords on blinds and drapes out of reach.

Keep sharp objects, such as knives, scissors and tools, and other hazardous items, like coins, beads and pins, in a secure place out of baby’s reach.

Store cleaning products and medications in locked cabinets. Never store potentially toxic substances in containers that could be mistaken for food or drink.

5 Tips to Fight Sleep Deprivation

D

espite a desire for perfect sleep, Americans are not even close to getting the recommended eight hours a night, and 1 in 4 Americans believes the sleep they are getting isn’t the quality rest they want and need.

“To put sleep deprivation into perspective, 37% of Americans report they have fallen asleep behind the wheel,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, a sleep health expert for Mattress Firm. “About 5% report falling asleep while driving on a monthly basis. Clearly, sleep deprivation is wide-spread and a risk factor for overall well-being.”

With chronic sleep deprivation, the brain’s ability to maintain attention and focus continues to decline over time. In addition to impairing mental function, lack of sleep has been associated with a host of risks to overall health.

Prevent sleep deprivation and take charge of your mental and physical health with these tips from Kansagra: Nap responsibly. When you’re feeling tired, it’s no surprise the best solution may be sleep. Some research suggests a quick power nap can actually give you a stronger boost than caffeine. However, too much rest during the day can throw off your nighttime sleep pattern. Aim for no more than 20 minutes so you don’t wake up groggy, and time your nap for the mid-point of your wake

cycle (halfway between when you wake up and go to sleep).

Limit screen time. If you turn to your phone to help wind down while you’re in bed, you’re not alone, but you may be doing more harm than good. According to a survey conducted by Mattress Firm on sleep habits, the average person scrolls on his or her phone while lying in bed for more than 12 minutes before shutting down for the night. What’s more, the light from the screen serves as a stimulant, as does the digital content you’re viewing. That means you’re making it physically harder to fall asleep than if you put down your devices at least 30 minutes before bed.

Stick to a sleep schedule. The average person gets less than six hours of sleep per night, according to the survey – a far cry from the eight hours most experts recommend. One way to buck this trend is to make it a point to turn in and wake up at the same time every day so you synchronize your sleep time with your internal clock. While eight hours is the standard, you may need to adjust up or down to find the amount sleep that lets you wake feeling rested.

Develop a pre-bedtime routine. You can train your body to prepare for sleep by creating a pattern or a routine that eases you toward sleep.

According to the survey, those who sleep on their backs at night are most likely to report they slept “perfectly well.” The most common sleeping position, on your side, correlates with the worst sleep reports. trial and error to find the right position that keeps your spine aligned, allows you to breathe freely and evenly distributes your weight.
