By Dawn M Chiossi o one should ever be hungry: It is a basic humane belief, and it is one that Caldwell Methodist Church takes seriously. On February 9th, they sought to make a dent in the grave problem of hunger in society with their second annual Rise Against Hunger event, and they were elated with the results.

Approximately 181 people signed in for this meal packing event to send meal packages abroad to those who are starving. During this expansive event, people

from all over gathered together to assemble 20,000 meals for those in need. According to Reverend Vivian Rodeffer, Pastor of Caldwell Methodist Church, “When you break it down at 29 cents a meal, that’s $6,000,” she enthuses. “This was double the amount of last year!”

Proving that many hands could make a huge difference, she is pleased to announce that many people showed up including members of various organizations, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, continued on page 2

Rise Against Hunger ... continued from front page neighbors, members of the church and so many more. This event was so popular, that people of all ages attended.

According to Rodeffer, who has been pastor for the church for six years, this is a mission close to her heart.

“The main mission of Rise Against Hunger is to end world hunger by 2030.

They partner with countries all around the world, where severe food shortages threaten lives. They work to resolve the root causes of famine in addition to providing meals. Last year, meals went to aid people Uganda, while this year the destination for the meals is still unknown. People will hear where the meals are going in a few weeks.” Rodeffer said.

In two shifts, this extensive group formed an assembly line packaging the meals comprised of rice, soy, dried vegetables, vitamins and other essential nutrients. The bags of food are five to six servings of nutritious food that people add

water to. There were stations where people measured ingredients and filled plastic bags, measuring stations, sealing stations, and stations were everything was labeled and boxed up. There was a muscle team on each shift--those who replenished supplies by lifting the 50 pound bags of rice and 30 pound bag of soy.

Children even had the opportunity to be a real part of this event, working as runners carrying bins of bags from one station to another. While everyone worked in tandem, the Rise Against Hunger event was by no means a somber one.

Rodeffer tells that everyone had a great time laughing, working, dancing along to the music that was playing.

“This was so much fun,” Rodeffer shares.

Additionally, one of the most enjoyable, most motivating aspects of the entire day was the gong that was brought in.

“For every thousand bags that we packed,

someone rang the gong. We rang the gong 20 times that day,” Rodeffer prides.

“My favorite thing about the whole event was seeing all of the people who came out that day,” she says. “The variety of all ages participating. It just showed that everyone can come and participate.

“This event was so positive, that we want to keep it going,” Rodeffer relates.

Rodeffer tells that Caldwell Methodist Church does so much to fight hunger, both abroad and in the community, working with CUMAC in Paterson, Interfaith Hospitality Network in Newark, Caldwell Food Pantry and much more. For her, the outpouring of support for the cause of Rise Against Hunger was just as important as the cause itself.

“We are not a big church but everyone came to participate. We do so many wonderful outreach things, giving the personal touch,” she says. “Everyone being together was such a joyful time. It was special.”

Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Launches New Joint Task Force to Combat Crime

“One of the most effective ways of extending the reach of law enforcement is by sharing information and personnel,” Stephens said in a press release on the new task force.

“Criminals do not recognize borders particularly when it comes to property crimes. By working together, we can identify patterns that we hope will enable us to solve crimes quicker and disrupt criminal crews that may be working in multiple communities,” the acting prosecutor added.

Officers from the nine departments will focus on three aspects of crime prevention: deterrence, education and detection, he said. And, they’ll

coordinate on activities such as safety checkpoints and cooperative patrols, Stephens said.

Forming a joint initiative came about after local law enforcement “saw a need to help each other combat auto thefts and burglaries” in the county, North Caldwell Police Chief Mark Deuer said.

“Although we have always had a great working relationship with each other, this new unit brings us all together as one team with one mission,” said Deuer, who also serves as president of the West Essex Chiefs Association.

Essex County’s West Caldwell School of Technology to Undergo Expansion and Modernization

By Steve Sears hen the 2018-19 school year for Essex County West Caldwell School of Technology ends, a flurry of activity will begin.

On Wednesday, January 30, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and the Essex County Schools of Technology signed a Project Labor Agreement with local construction trades unions to ensure union workers will be hired and work on a $30-million-dollar project to expand and modernize the facility. The project includes construction of a two-story addition onto the front of the school, renovations to current space to accommodate current and new curriculum, and creation of an outdoor courtyard.

The slated project completion date is January 2021.

While the project is on-going, students will attend classes at Bloomfield Technical School, which was recently closed but will be briefly reopened during the renovation project.

“That building was a factory,” says DiVincenzo. “The county purchased it in 1976, so from 1976 until now it was one of our vocational schools. Our vocational school system here in Essex County has approximately 2,200 kids in all three of our buildings, and now that school (West Caldwell) houses approximately between 250 – 300.”

Each year, more than $1.2 billion in personal items and accessories are swiped from cars in the U.S., according to data from CNN. Experts estimate that there are about 1.85 million thefts a year, as well as thousands and thousands of attempted break ins.

Some general safety tips from police include: Park in

busy, well-lit areas and avoid concealment from larger vehicles. The greater the chance that someone may see a crime in progress, the more a thief will be deterred, lock the doors, and close windows and the sunroof, either hide from plain sight or remove all valuables (cash, iPad adapters, power plugs, GPS units). Also, remove any items with personal identifiers (wallets, vehicle papers such as registration, and cell phones) and use the trunk to store shopping bags instead of keeping them in plain view.

Don’t leave a garage door opener in the car and don’t leave your car running when you pop into a store to grab something quickly. Finally, consider an anti-theft system, such as an alarm, steering wheel locks, steering column collars or brake pedal locks.

Caldwell Community Mourns Loss of Devoted Educator, Go Fund Me Raises $51K for Family

By Evan Wechman he devastating disease of colon cancer is not often talked about among friends and family, as it is an unpleasant and morbid subject.

According to the American Cancer Society, it is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women in the United States. It is expected to cause about 51,020 deaths during 2019.

These figures at first glance may not mean much if one has not been personally affected by the illness, but it

has now hit home for the residents of Essex County. On January 19, beloved Caldwell educator, Christina Siedler, passed away from her battle with colon cancer, leaving behind a devastated family. She was married to Bob and leaves behind two beautiful young daughters, Ava and Leila.

In addition, she leaves many friends and colleagues left to mourn for the loss of this tireless educator. The stunned communities of Caldwell and nearby towns have joined together to contribute over $51,000 on a Go Fund Me page to help ease the burden for the Siedler family. The campaign seems to be trending upwards with many people sharing stories of the energy and

compassion this woman brought to others.

Tina, as she was affectionately referred to by her loved ones, worked full time for the ARC of Essex County and was also an adjunct professor at Montclair State University. According to Sue Brand, principal of the Stepping Stones School in Roseland and Director of Early Childhood at the ARC of Essex County, Tina will be terribly missed. “She made a significant impact on everyone she worked with from students, current and former families, and friends.

Tina left an incredible lasting impression on everybody she came in contact with.”

Brand, who was Tina’s supervisor, came to value her over time as a great

friend, besides being a tremendous teacher. Tina began working for the ARC in 2009 as a Special Educator for the Shapiro Center Early Intervention Program. There, she worked with infants and children in a home setting, providing support and guidance for those at risk of developing a disability.

A few years later, she transitioned to the Stepping Stones School where she again devoted her time to students needing specialized instruction.

cording to Brand, she showed the same level of compassion towards the other staff members as she did to the students she so lovingly enjoyed working with. “She had a way of making you feel special by the way she intently listened and engaged in conversation. Up until the last conversations she had with myself and others here, Tina was still asking questions about everybody else’s life and getting on with business as usual.”

She was open about her illness but “If Tina was struggling, we did not know about it. Tina was a special person who made a significant impact on all of us who knew her at The ARC of Essex County. Her loss is profound and we will miss her very much,” said Brand.

Grover Cleveland Middle Schooler Chosen for Region Chorus

ailin Egan (8th grader at Grover Cleveland Middle School) was accepted into the NJMEA Junior High Northern New Jersey Region Chorus. The Junior High Region Chorus is a prestigious ensemble made up of 7th-9th grade singers from the seven Northern Counties of NJ. Egan will be performing with at the Junior High Region Chorus on Sunday, March 17th at Mountain Lakes High School.

Garden State Yacht Club to Host Boating Safety Course & Open House

he Garden State Yacht Club on Lake Hopatcong will offer a US Coast Guard-sanctioned boating safety course on Saturday, May 4. Given in one day, students are eligible to receive the NJ Boating Safety Certificate at the completion of the course and passing the exam. All boaters are required

by New Jersey law to have this certificate. The cost of $75 covers materials, the exam, and lunch.

Parishes of West Essex Announce 2019 Faith Quest Lenten Speaker Series

he 2019 annual Lenten adult spirituality program, Faith Quest, will be held Wednesday evenings March 20, March 27, April 3 and April 10 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Notre Dame Church at 359 Central Avenue in North Caldwell.

The program is open to the public and the three speaker topic areas focus on: Prayer and Spirituality, Sacred Scripture, and Faith in Practice.

Wednesday, March 20 Prayer and Spirituality - “The Conversion of St. Monica: The Other Story in Augustine’s Confessions” by Father Douglas J. Milewski, professor of theology, Seton Hall University. Among Father Milewski’s areas of expertise are the Fathers of the Church and the theology and history of early Christianity. Father also serves at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Roseland.

Sacred Scripture - “The Women in Jesus’ Life” with Sister Honora Werner, O.P., a Sister of Saint Dominic of Caldwell. Sister Honora has taught extensively from the elementary school to doctoral level and most recently she taught and directed the doctoral program in preaching at Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, Missouri.

Faith in Practice - “How to be a Peacemaker: In Society, In the Church, in My Heart” by Father Timothy Graff, director, Social Concerns Office, Archdiocese of Newark. Father Graff also serves in pastoral planning, government relations and labor relations for the Archdiocese.

Wednesday, March 27 Prayer and Spirituality - “My Petitions vs. Thy Will Be Done” with Ginger Grancagnolo, Ed.D., OPA, lecturer, author and counselor. Grancagnolo holds a doctorate in Christian ministry and has a background in education, psychology and theology.

Understanding Sacred Scripture - “The Saint John’s Bible: From the Middle Ages to the 21st Century” with Marie Marmo Mullaney, Ph.D., professor of history at Caldwell University. Attendees can view the sacred art of The Saint John’s Bible,

the first illuminated, handwritten bible of monumental size to be created in more than 500 years. Dr. Mullaney is a historian who has taught numerous courses including “The History of Catholics in America” and “The History of the Catholic Church.”

Faith in Practice -“Our Invisible Neighbors: Detained Immigrants in New Jersey (and beyond)” with Ken Boccino, treasurer and member of the board of trustees of First Friends of New Jersey and New York, an organization which works to uphold the inherent dignity and humanity of detained immigrants and asylum seekers through volunteer visitation, resettlement assistance and advocacy. Boccino is a deacon at St. George’s Episcopal Church, Maplewood, NJ. Wednesday April 3 Prayer and Spirituality - “The Eucharist: The Meal that Nourishes, That Unites and That Identifies” with Father Robert Laferrera, pastor of Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament in Roseland, New Jersey. Father Laferrara is former associate director of the Office of Worship, Archdiocese of Newark and former chair of the Archdiocese Liturgical Commission.

Understanding Sacred Scripture - “As I have Done” with Sister Donna Ciangio, O.P., D.Min., a Sister of St. Dominic of Caldwell and chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark. Sister, who also serves in St. Rose of Lima Church, Short Hills, will focus on how Jesus gave a great commandment to do as he did and how that affects all areas of life in accompanying others on the journey of discipleship. The discussion will focus on ways to live the command: “As I Have Done”.

Faith in Practice - “Sharing Faith, Sharing Life,” with E. Denise Peoples, double lung transplant recipient, community educator, faith based coordinator and family services coordinator for the NJ Sharing Network. She is an advocate for organ and tissue donation and for the effects the process can have on families and communities. She also founded Mae’s Plate, a non-profit named in honor of her mother,

that serves home cooked meals, resources and donated supplies and clothes to individuals who are in-between homes.

Wednesday, April 10 Prayer and Spirituality - “The Gift of Our Stories: Christian Spirituality and Evangelization in Our Social Media World” with Father Antonio “Tony” Ricarte, parochial vicar at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament in Roseland. He holds a Licentiate in Missiology from the Gregorian University in Rome with a special focus on dialogue and new evangelization.

Understanding Sacred Scripture - “The Gospel within the Gospel: The Parables of Luke 15 and Lent. A Scriptural Exploration of the Prodigal Son” with Rev. Christopher M. Ciccarino, associate dean for seminary and academic studies, Immaculate Conception Seminary and editor for the revision of the New Testament of the New American Bible.

Faith in Practice - “Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching” with Jonathan D. Lace, who teaches Biblical studies and iOS application development at Seton Hall Preparatory School and is the creator of the Theologica iphone app.

An offering of $3.00 per session or $10.00 for the four week series is requested to help defray expenses. Pre-registration is also requested. Checks should be made payable to Notre Dame. Faith Quest began in 2007 as part of the Archdiocese of Newark’s New Energies Initiative.
