Financial Support Brings New Suspension Program And Playground By Local Non-Profit
S
By Ann Marie Barron pecial needs children receive the intense therapies they require in a caring, social environment, thanks to a West Caldwell nonprofit and its supporters. “We’re trying to give kids more therapy to make bigger gains over shorter periods of time,’’ said Scott Matthews, executive director and founder of Intensive Therapeutics, http:// intensivetherapeutics.org , which also operates out of its original location in Fanwood. Intensive Therapeutics offers physical, occupational and speech therapy to children in their offices, but also provides summer programs and other programs in public facilities and parks. The variety helps physically challenged children acclimate to society better than traditional, home-based services, Mat-
thews said. “They kind of get stuck in their homes,’’ he said of the children, many of whom have been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, or have suffered a traumatic brain injury. “Kids with at-home services don’t get to experience other kids. Here, they get used to a school-like setting. They get to interact with other kids and do the things that all kids do.’’ Intensive Therapeutics serves between 250 and 300 children each year at its two locations, in West Caldwell, and the original office in Fanwood. The two-story West Caldwell location comprises 14,000 square feet, while the Fanwood location is slightly smaller, Matthews said. A popular summer program serves 50 children at a time for six hours a day for four weeks. “It’s that kind of inten-

sive therapy that will help these kids get better,’’ said Matthews, who founded Intensive Therapeutics in the basement of his home nearly 12 years ago. He opened the Fanwood facility in 2007 and the program has flourished ever since. Some of the children require one therapy, but many require more, Matthews said. “Kids with those types of disabilities usually need one, two or all three therapy services to be able to perform life skills better,’’ he said. The program charges fees on a sliding scale, helping those families that are financially challenged by medical costs. “We also have scholarships for those families that can’t afford services at all,’’ Matthews said. Recent facility improvements have made a huge impact, Matthews said.
A recent grant from The Montclair Foundation helped the program purchase a LiteGait, a suspension system that can lift a child slightly as they walk over a treadmill and “unweight” their legs from their full body weight. The suspension allows children to learn to use their affected leg for walking with less stress on their joints, Matthews said. “We’re very, very appreciative of the Montclair Foundation for its support,’’ Matthews said. “I can’t stress enough how grateful we are.’’ Another capital improvement is a brand new playground, slated to open this spring in the West Caldwell location. It will make acclimating children to social situations even easier, Matthews said. “Kids will get out of the house and work on those social skills, those play
skills, in a more natural context,’’ he said. “We’re really trying to fit in to the services that are already out there,’’ Matthews said. “We can

Many Contribute To Caldwell Swim Teams’ Success
W
By Josh Lashley ith nearly two decades at the helm as the head coach for the Caldwell High School swim program, boys and girls teams, Stephen Trivino has seen many outstanding performances by his student-athletes, individually and collectively. This season is no different as both the girls and boys squads have competed at a high level on a consistent basis in each and every event. The girls team captains-Holly Buoye, Natalie Dalla Riva and Linnea Endersby as well as the
boys team captains-Jon Housel, Nick Gutierrez and Tom Murray are doing their best to lead the way for the Chiefs. “Each of the captains was voted by their peers on our team at the end of last season,’’ Trivino said. “In our 18 years history no two swimmers ever doubled as champions in two events apiece as Linnea and Natalie did this year. Natalie won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke while Linnea surprised the entire crowd and won the 50 and 100 freestyle at the Essex County Championships hosted at Raritan Bay YMCA. Junior Perry Mes-
cia finished second in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, he was the first boy to place this high (at the Essex County Championships) since Dave Burton in 2014. “The return of senior tri-captain Jon Housel this year after shoulder surgery kept him out of the water for the entire season last year, has made all the difference in our boys’ team having seven wins and being over .500 for the first time since 2010 season. Senior tri-captains Tom Murray and Nick Gutierrez along with other seniors like JB Mollet, Andrew Trespasz, Sara Stoma, Meredith Donlin, Rach-

elle Everswick and girls tri-captain Holly Buoye fill up our outside lanes and have helped us live up to our team motto of ‘winning from the outside in.’’ There have been plenty of other contributors to the success of the Caldwell girls swim team this winter. “On the girls side our juniors who have always been a solid part of our team for three years in so many events,’’ Trivino said. “Madison Tahbaz has scored high in the sprint events as Alyssa Krisinski, Emily Ibarra and Amanda Lecuona have been aces in the hole in a variety of swims. One more junior Tali Tukachinsky has become an absolute weapon for the coaches in the 100 butterfly and in relays and
the occasional 100 breast stroke entrant. “The sophomore class cannot be left out as Elizabeth Murray has become a distance force in our county,” he said. “This young girl has gone from a last minute addition last year to the 500 freestyle to as dominate a swimmer as Dalla Riva and Endersby have been for us. Other sophomores like Jenna Dolce and Victoria Soder keep our team in the run for our second State Championship.’’ The Chiefs are rife with talent and balance on the boys’ team as well. “Underclassmen have been very strong and keep us competitive at every meet,’’ Trivino said. “Juniors Ken Axe, Alex Rosa,

Dave Labruno and Chris Debellonia have scored many valuable points for the boys and have filled relays with a strong desire to win. Freshman Andrew McLaughlin has been a huge surprise to the coaches becoming a stud in both the 200 IM and 100 backstroke all season long.’’ “Our program has enjoyed great success over the course of my 18 seasons. I have seen our first inaugural team with a handful of swimmers make their way through their infancy to this year’s team which boast a 9-3 record on the girls side and a 7-5 record for the boys.’’ The statistics listed above were from meets through Jan. 30.

last year’s political debates and election. The recent election, as contentious as it was, remains uneasy for many who question the next leadership; and if the other candidate would have won, that same uneasiness would have still been present. As readers look back at 2016, and then forward to what lies ahead, we must not forget the importance of sticking to core values, good ethics and morals, and proper etiquette which can range from being kind to others; having respect for all people; being honest and giving to those who may be struggling. Throughout the past year, the local community has been an outreach in so many ways to help others both near and far. Readers
of the “Caldwell News” were inundated with so many positive stories. In Caldwell, the community made an effort to honor first responders with painted blue lines on town roads to support police; the Caldwell Women’s Club stuffed stocking for veterans; an 89-year old North Caldwell man hosts a music concert to support food pantries; a 40-year old West Caldwell woman gives back by getting involved in various acts of kindness for 40 days to celebrate her milestone birthday; a ‘book lady’ in Essex County delivers free books to nail salons and beauty shops to encourage reading among children; local students at Caldwell University trick-or-treat for non-perishable goods

Non-Profit Passes On Funds For Cribs To Keep Babies Safe
By Jason Cohen hen a child is born parents worry non-stop. Well, one New Jersey organization is attempting to assuage those concerns by making sure babies are as safe as possible when they sleep. On Jan. 26, Keeping Babies Safe (KBS), a Warren-based non-profit, was the recipient of a $25,000 grant for its ongoing “Project Safe Crib” campaign in Essex and Passaic counties. “We really get our funding through donations and grants, which are so important,” said Joyce Davis, the president and founder of KBS. “We’ve definitely impacted lots of families. The majority of tragedies are preventable.”

The grant, which was funded partially by the Partners for Health Foundation, will help purchase 127 cribs in Bloomfield, Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Clifton, Essex Fells, Fairfield, Glen Ridge, Little Falls, Montclair, North Caldwell, Nutley, Roseland, Verona, West Caldwell and West Orange. Davis started KBS in 2006 after her four monthold son Garret died because of a supplemental mattress in his crib—a mattress advertised as suitable and safe. Since then she has made it her mission to educate people throughout the country about what types of cribs to purchase and how babies should sleep. sized. In fact, beginning June 28, 2011, all cribs manufactured and sold, including resale, must comply with new and improved federal safety standards. The new rules, which apply to full-size and nonfull-size cribs, prohibit the manufacture or sale of traditional drop-side rail cribs, strengthen crib slats and mattress supports, improve the quality of hardware and require more rigorous testing. According to Davis, drop side cribs are extremely hazardous and at one point, more than three million were recalled. She said cribs are much safer today, but it is crucial for babies to always sleep in their own crib. If a baby is going to sleep in a play

Commission. Since its inception, the organization has run programs in more than 1,200 hospitals and allocated money for more than 10,000 cribs nationwide. Davis explained that she and her colleagues teach hospitals about crib safety and then with the assistance of the hospitals, they find families that need cribs. Part of the process is also showing families a safe sleep video for babies. One issue she often runs into is grandparents passing on old cribs to grandchildren. “Parents really need to educate grandparents,” she said. group of Caldwell University students and faculty and staff spent a week in January volunteering in an impoverished village in Belize. They helped repaint a school, spent time playing with the children and were treated to gracious hospitality and home-cooked meals. Marisa Juliano, a senior, who attended for the first time, said “I saw things that broke my heart a little and things that were so beautiful.” Working with the schoolchildren made her heart “grow 10 times bigger. As soon as I met them I wanted to do 10 times more. I wanted to paint the whole town for them.” Senior Sean Puzzo was on the mission trip for a third time. The villagers are not rich in material things,

he said, but they are certainly rich in “community, spirit and respect.” Sophomore Zachary Weinberg found his first
mission trip a rewarding experience. The villagers “don’t have half of what we have, but they have joy in their simple life,” he said.

In the evenings the group was treated to Belizean meals prepared by Miss Olive, a woman Caldwell students have gotten to know over the years. “She taught us how to cook some of the traditional items, and it was really nice to have that interaction,” said Crista Cattano. “We call her our Belizean mom. She takes such good care of us.” The students stayed at a retreat house in Punta Gorda, run by the Jesuits,
and were off the grid from technology, eating dinner at night and sharing the day’s activities for hours. “I love being disconnected for the week,” said Cattano. “They have a simple way of living. You become very present to the environment you are in and why you are there.” Henrietta Genfi, Caldwell’s director of advisement, was one of the chaperones. She said the students were grateful for the opportunity to help

Holiday Generosity Hits Home For Many
hristmas 2016 was one of the best years for The Human Services Dept. of Caldwell/West Caldwell in part due to major contributors and partnerships Director Maria Burak has developed over the years. One of those more recently developed partnerships has been with the tenants of Carlyle Towers in Caldwell. Lead again this year by Joanne Zascone, along with the cooperation of building management, Zascone organized a Christmas Giving Project focused on families with children in Caldwell. The tenants of Carlyle Tower immediately joined in the effort to give this Christmas extra special
meaning for these community members. Many of Carlyle Tower’s residents have participated generously in years past and did so again this year. The items which tenants donated were new toys and gifts selected from “personal wish lists” along with new winter clothing and warm fashionable boots. Holiday “food essentials boxes” accompanied by generous grocery gift cards were provided to each family by a prominent Carlyle tenant. All this added to the holiday cheer and gave the holiday meal an extra festive feel. Zascone also enlisted the generosity of area merchants to enhance the adult seniors Christmas experi-

ence. Some seniors shared in the holiday festivities by receiving a beautiful poinsettia plant, donated by Shop Rite of West Caldwell. While others received lovely holiday treat gift bags, constructed by Zascone, using all of the delicious cookies, coffees, chocolates, crackers and supplies donated by our generous area merchants. Everyone who participated, both tenants and merchants alike, expressed their joy in contributing to the Caldwell community. Many, many thanks go to all the tenants whom participated in the “in house” collection effort as well as the partner merchants.

Caldwell Resident At Mount St. Dominic Academy Distributes Care Packages In Newark
Mount St. Dominic Academy student collected travel size personal products to donate to those in need at Saint John’s Church in Newark. Caldwell resident Regina Rasmusson helped organize and distribute the care packages. Rasmusson took part in the school’s collection drive asking for mini size shampoo bottles, soaps, shaving items, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Students packaged the personal products into small, easy to carry bags for distribution to people in the soup kitchen line at Saint John’s. Rasmusson and fellow students handed out the care packages to grateful
recipients. The items were delivered to Saint John’s Soup Kitchen in early Jan. In addition, 300 sandwiches-to-go made by the students were handed out along with the care packages. Mt. Saint Dominic Acad-

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to promote their long-term health. The CDC recommends that men and women age 65 or older who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strength-training activities that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit older men and women with no preexisting
health conditions are capable of these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity coupled with strength training may also provide adequate physical activity for aging men and women. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women should consult with their physicians to discuss any limitations they may have and how to manage those risks while still being physically active.

U.S. Power Squadron Offers State Boating Safety Course
N
orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS), plans to offer the New Jersey State Police approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. beginning Tue., March 7. .The course taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of NJ, and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining a NJ State Boating Safety Certificate, will run every Tuesday evening for seven weeks which includes a night for review, and a night for the required state
examination. The cost of the course is $98. Legislation in NJ was passed a number of years ago requiring all boaters, 16 years of age or older, operating a power driven vessel including a personal watercraft (PWC), to complete a boating safety course. The legislation requires a minimum of eight hours of instruction with at least six hours of in-classroom study and a proctored examination. Those successfully completing the course will receive a NJ Marine State Police certificate that must be in the operator’s possession when on the waters of the state. Failure to exhibit the cer-
tificate is presumptive evidence that the person has not completed an approved boating safety course and is subject to a fine. This certificate is separate from the license required for boating on lakes. Registration is made through the Continuing Education office at James Caldwell High School, after 6 p.m., Mon.-Thur. Call (973)228-2092; email: http://www.cwcboe.org/continuinged. Questions concerning the USPS course can also be addressed to the Boating Course Chair, Bob Rosselot at (973)228-5329; email: rosselot17@aol.com.

ed living facilities spreading holiday cheer throughout West Essex. According to outgoing President Ray Liptak the Dans and their chapter quartets, Gimme Four and The B Team visited more than a dozen facilities. The chapter performs a 45-60 minute show full of music and laughter featuring lots of audience participation. These performances are given free of charge as part of the society’s mission of community service. The chapter is currently preparing for another annual event. They sell singing valentines the week of Feb. 14. A quartet can be hired to sing two love songs to a sweetheart for a nominal fee. Everyone sings. Some sing better than others, so
to help insure that everyone can reach their full potential as a singer, the Dans offer a program entitled Ready, Set, Sing! This is another community oriented program offered several times a year at no charge. It is run several times throughout the year. The Dapper Dans are part of the Barbershop Harmony Society; a 22,000 member organization based in Nashville, TN with affiliate associations throughout the world, The BHS has made it their mission to promote music in the community, the home and in schools as a tool for enriching life. Their mottos “Keep the Whole World Singing” and “Making the music that’s making the difference” are ideas that the Dans live by. They founded a youth chorus to introduce young men
to four part harmony singing which has existed for ten years . The chapter gives several scholarships to local music students and are exploring a youth in harmony workshop to be held either in the fall of 2017 or spring of 2018. Barbershop is currently experiencing a surge of interest from young people as a capella singing. Men of all ages are welcome to come to a rehearsal and see the fun for themselves. Members range in age from teenagers to 94. Meetings are Tues., at 7 p.m., in the West Caldwell civic center. Everyone is welcome. For more information go to www.dapperdansofharmony.org.
