Library Patrons Learn And Listen About Famous Musicians
By Brianna Kudisch aryanne Christiano-Mistretta has found a way to transform learning by combining storytelling with music. She is the founder of “Learn and Listen,” a recently-created program that illustrates the lives of famous musicians. Every Wednesday for the month of July Caldwell Library has hired ChristianoMistretta to present her "Learn & Listen" music program. “I present a half hour biography on a famous entertainer followed by live music,” she said.
The program is two-fold: the first part involves Christiano-Mistretta reading the biography of the musician and then the second part consists of live music from performers acting as the musician. There are currently six different musicians to choose from within the program. The famous musicians portrayed involve Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Johnny Cash and John Lennon. Christiano-Mistretta of Kenilworth aimed to create something that would en-

gage listeners of all ages through the lives and musical styles of different musicians. She has other lectures that libraries often host, but the “Learn and Listen” program is the most popular one by far. Christiano-Mistretta started up coming up with public speaking programs for libraries during 2013. She started the “Learn and Listen” series about a year ago. The first one was held last summer and it has since grown to a crowd-pleasing event that local libraries often book months in advance. She emphasized the broadness of music’s reach, saying that not only could seniors enjoy it through reminiscing on artists such as the Beatles, but additionally younger people could also gain a deeper appreciation for that music, despite the age gap. “Music transcends all generations; it’s something that everyone can relate to,” explained Christiano-Mistretta. Christiano-Mistretta plays a dual role in each program. Not only does she individually write each biography but she also acts as the host of the show, reading the biographies aloud to the crowds. The biographies are each about five pages long. De-
spite the length, ChristianoMistretta doesn’t memorize the material. Instead, she knows it well enough to naturally present it to the audience. Each show encourages audience interaction. Christiano-Mistretta tries to be upbeat as possible, illustrated by the plethora of fun facts provided in each biography. She also includes facts such as number of records, notable accomplishments and other achievements from their lifetime. The famous musicians are portrayed by performers
Ruben Castillo, Stephen Fuller, and Keith Beck, depending on which performer is shown. The program has been performed over 22 times. Usually held at libraries, the “Learn and Listen” program receives funding from different sources, including the government and Friends of the Library. The crowd at a show can vary anywhere from 15 people (which would be considered a small crowd) to over 100 (the turnout for the recent show at Teaneck Library). Christiano-Mistretta
mentioned the possibility of adding more people to the series, specifically female musicians. She looked forward to the thought of including notable women, such as Stevie Nicks. “I’d also like to have more women come back. I had a woman who [performed as] Ella Fitzgerald [but] she’s taking a temporary break.” The next two showings will present Johnny Cash and Nat King Cole. Cash was scheduled for July 20 at 6:30 p.m. and Cole is scheduled for July 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Caldwell Library.

JCHS Student Earns Spot At Competitive Summer Musical Theatre Program
ames Caldwell High School (JCHS) junior Mollie DeFilippo loves to act and sing, and those talents earned her a spot this year as one of only seven students nominated for an Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards Program. Created in 1996 to encourage and reward exceptional accomplishments in the production of high school musical theatre, the Rising Star Awards, presented by the Investors Foundation, is a statewide competition of New Jersey high school musicals modeled after Broadway's Tony Awards. DeFilippo was nominated for her performance last spring in the West Caldwell school’s rendition of “Seussical the Musical” as Gertrude McFuzz, friend and admirer of Horton the Elephant, who believes that Horton will find her more interesting if she had more than a one-feather tail. “This is quite an honor for one of our students, and we couldn’t agree more with the committee’s selection of Mollie as a finalist,” said Principal Jim Devlin. “The show was bright, colorful and entertaining, and Mollie certainly contributed that.” DeFilippo found out about her nomination on Mon., May 9, when Paper Mill Playhouse and HomeTowne Television - Your Neighborhood Network announced the nominations for the 2016 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards presented by the Investors Bank Foundation. The awards are presented for outstanding achievement by students and educators in the areas of performance, design, direction, choreography, technical production and overall production excellence. This is the second time a JCHS production received a nomination. They were
nominated and awarded the Educational Impact Award in 2014. “These awards are not easy to earn,” said musical director Kerry Baglivio. “Simply being nominated is a huge achievement and honor. So, earning two nominations in three years is quite impressive. Mollie should be very proud of her nomination.” The Rising Star Award Corps of Evaluators is comprised of theater professionals, performing artists, designers, and theater arts educators. More than 100 student productions from high schools across the state are reviewed for nominations, and the Tony Awardsstyle Rising Star Awards Gala Ceremony is presented on the Paper Mill stage. Award-winners are presented with an engraved crystal award from Tiffany & Co. Four $1,000 cash awards are presented to outstanding individual students who plan to continue studying theatre or technical theatre in college. A fifth cash scholarship of $1,000 is awarded in memoriam of Rising Star Nominee Douglas Michael Krueger. DeFilippo did not win her category, but as a final nominee in the lead acting category, she did win a scholarship to Paper Mill Playhouse's competitive Summer Musical Theatre Conservatory, a professional training program which along with advanced classes in singing, acting and dance.
Nominees perform on the Paper Mill stage during the annual New Voices Concert. “Mollie will continue to make us proud this summer and we can’t wait to see her on the stage again,” added Devlin. “And, there’s always next year.” For additional information on the Rising Star Awards, or to receive application information, contact 973-315-1668.

Magaletta Transforms Properties To One-Of-A Kind Masterpieces
By Cheryl Conway ustom, creation, transformation, specialization, originality and endless options come to mind when describing the services provided at Magaletta Design Environment in Parsippany. With 25 years in the industry, business owner Matthew Magaletta of Florham Park knows how to transform any property or backyard into a sensational yet functional space that carries with it that “wow factor with any glance of the eye. Magaletta Design Environment is a full landscape design, custom pool builder specializing in outdoor kitchens, full masonry work, decks, outdoor lighting, lawn maintenance, waterfalls and just about everything for outdoor properties. Magaletta Designs is not a “typical landscaping company. “There’s a lot of landscapers out there, says Magaletta. Anyone can cut lawns or plant bushes. “People call me when they want their properties and backyards to stand out beyond the rest. When they want to wow their neighbors, that’s when they call me in. Involved in landscaping since he was 13, Magaletta started out cutting lawns for neighbors. He worked with his neighbor who was a landscape designer.
“I loved working outside, explains Magaletta. “I took a liking to it, and continued throughout high school and college. His experience and passion for the landscaping industry “just grew and grew and grew, he says. “I have the eye for it, he adds. “Everyone has their niche in life; this is my niche. I can create anything and turn it into a work of art. Unlike other landscape companies, at Magaletta, “We specialize in custom designs for our clients, he says. To ensure that customers like the project that is planned, Magaletta provides a 3D video design to the customer. “We show them a 3D design, so they can see what their house will look like on the outside when the project is completed. While other companies offer a 3D video, Magaletta’s “specialty design is quite spectacular, he says. Most of Magaletta’s client base is for private homes in Morris and Essex counties but he has done some industrial work such as the landscaping and design at Park Savoy in Florham Park. “We work where the client wants us, says Magaletta, adding that it will travel even further like to South Jersey if requested. No matter the locale, “every job we are doing is a cus-
tom project, he says. “We custom to customers’ likes and wants. He uses all kinds of products and equipment, all different patios and paver stones. All of the lighting work is LED; “that’s the norm now. Working in the landscaping business has been enjoyable for Magaletta. “What I enjoy the most is going to my client’s house and transforming their properties to showcases in the neighborhood. I feel proud that my signs are on their properties. I become personable with clients; they become my friend. Homeowners will not be disappointed contracting with Magaletta for all of their outdoor property needs. “We are a reputable company with over 25 years of experience, says Magaletta. “We are honest, we are knowledgeable and you will have an owner, myself, on the projects. For the month of September, Magaletta is offering three different promotions: 10 percent off any landscaping construction job; $150 off landscaping design of property; or buy 10 LED lights and get three free. For more information, go to magalettadesigns.com. To arrange for an appointment or contract a project, call 973539-1818.

Grover Cleveland Middle School Music Program Reigns Superior At Music Festivals
usic ensembles from Grover Cleveland Middle School (GCMS) traveled to Jackson and Allentown, Pa., on May 26 and June 10, to participate in the annual adjudicated music festivals, receiving ratings of “Superior” on all seven of their performances. On Thurs., May 26, the sixth grade band,
chorus, and orchestra each received superior ratings at the Great Adventure Music Carousel Festival in Jackson. At the High Note Festival on Fri., June 10, in Allentown, the grade seven/eight chorus, seventh grade band, eighth grade band, and grade seven/eight orchestra also received superior ratings. All groups performed for
an audience of high school and middle school students from other area bands, orchestras and choruses. In addition, professional musicians judged the students’ performance and provided comments and suggestions to improve their playing. To earn the superior ratings, the three groups performed selec-
tions of their choice. Performances average 20 minutes in length and are critiqued by evaluators. Ratings of superior, excellent or good are assigned to each group. “These students work hard and make us proud each year, traditionally receiving all superior ratings,” said Supervisor of Music continued on page 14

ifth-grade students at Wilson Elementary School, West Caldwell, participated in their annual friendly Connect Four competition, turning lunchtime into a game, and resulting in two good friends competing for the top spot. continued from page 15 round until the ultimate winner is crowned. “I like this competition because everyone has a fair chance of winning,” said Keena. “It is voluntary, although everybody usually plays, and it is always fun to see which two students make it to the final round. This year, two good friends sat across the table from each other to see which one would win the title of champion.” Keena creates a chart similar to that of March Madness, writing in the names of each round’s winners. The final round is a series of seven games, with the winner needing to win four out of seven.

This year, Harry Boland and Jordan Catrambone competed for the title of Connect Four champion. As their peers looked on, wishing them luck and rooting them on, the two finalists battled for seven rounds, with Catrambone finally winning the wellmatch competition. “The fifth graders really look forward to the competition,” added Keena. “It is something special just for them, and it is a great way to bring students from different classrooms, different activities, and different interests together.” For more information on Wilson Elementary School, visit www.cwcboe.org/Wilson.
