Art Studio Gives Back to Community Through Library Program in Little Falls

The Little Falls Public Library held a free seminar for some of its youngest patrons on July 19. A children’s book reading followed by a hands-on lesson in drawing was held by the owners of a local art studio.

Jerry and Karen Winick, owners of Pencilworks Studio, gave a presentation that consisted of reading children’s books that they recently wrote, illustrated and published. The three books, which chronicled Jerry’s love for drawing that developed when he was a young boy, was immediately followed with a drawing class he gave teaching children how to draw a dog, a cow and a cat.

The Winicks say they are happy to work with the library and give back to the community that has embraced them for so many years. It’s their second time hosting the program at the library.

“We have so many kids from Little Falls that come into the art studio that do paint parties and birthday parties,” Karen said. “We’ve written three children’s books and they’re about a little boy who loved to draw. It’s all about Jerry when he was young and used to get in trouble in school for drawing a lot.”

The books, “Gerald Draws His Friends,” “Gerald Draws His Teacher” and “Gerald Draws the Animals at the Zoo, Can You?” were published with the help of IngramSpark, an online self-publishing company.

Karen introduced the books prior to reading them, explaining to the young artists that the character Gerald in the books is about Jerry when he was a young boy.

“The stories are about Gerald, and actually Gerald is Jerry when he was a little kid,” she explained. “He loved to draw.”

Then Karen told the true story of how one day Gerald decided to start drawing in school and drew one of his teachers. Some of his classmates who were watching him began giggling. His teacher noticed the commotion and had Gerald bring up the drawing to the front of the room. Gerald became so nervous that he was going to get in trouble, but when the teacher looked at his drawing she said, “It looks just like me!”

“That was really when Jerry started drawing,” she said, adding that he also began drawing all of his relatives, including other animals and objects. “But his teachers always told him to hold off on drawing until after class because he needed to pay attention.”

Local resident and parent Erin Wilks thought it was great that Jerry and Karen offered the reading and art class for the kids at the library.

“It’s really exciting to see the children follow step-by-step and the Winicks are super patient with the kids,” she added. “My older daughter goes to their painting class on Tuesdays so now we can’t miss anything when they offer it.”

Children’s Librarian Linda Belen said she was pleased with the turnout of over 40 children.

“The response to Jerry and Karen Winick’s program at the library is overwhelming,” said Belen. “They do an awesome job teaching the kids to draw and we can’t be more pleased with so many children.”

Belen also emphasized the patience the Winicks have when it comes to art instruction with children.

“Jerry is always great with the kids, showing them how to draw when they come in,” she added. “They walk out with a product they can be proud of and I’m really thrilled with

that.”

Little Falls Police Salute 2023 Junior Police Academy Cadets

The Little Falls Junior Police Academy was back again in its fifth year of transforming middle school students into cadets and giving them a taste of what it’s like to be a police officer, including a look at other careers in law enforcement.

The Little Falls Police Department (LFPD) runs the five-day program each summer for one week, that culminates in a ceremony bestowing certificates of completion for those who made it through boot camp. This year’s week-ending ceremony was held at School No. 1 on June 30.

Some of the action-packed activities in this year’s program comprised of CPR demonstrations, administering basic first aid,

how to use a tourniquet, examining a state police chopper and a visit to the Eastern State Penitentiary, located in Philadelphia.

Police Chief Bryan Prall spoke to the cadets and their families that gathered prior to distributing the certificates. He acknowledged those who have helped the program come to fruition each year, which includes Mayor James Damiano and Township Council, who were on-hand for the ceremony. He also thanked the LFPD officers who devote their own time to take part in the program, and thanked the parents of all the participants this year.

“Thank you for trusting us to take care of your kids this past week,” he said.

He also said that partnerships are vitally important

for running the program, including the schools and businesses of the community.

“The program is widely beneficial for us to have, especially in 2023, to increase engagement with kids in the community and the relationships they’ve created with the officers will continue,” he noted. “Congratulations!”

Borough Wide Trash to Treasure Community Garage Sale!

It’s back by popular demand! New Photography Studio Opens in Little Falls

Anew professional photography studio just opened in the Township. Dina Drew Duva Photography was welcomed with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the studio’s grand opening on April 1. Located at 85 Main Street, owner Dina Drew Duva is thrilled to have her studio open in Little Falls.

Dina, who is a professional actor, hails from Fairfield. She used to appear in national commercials during her acting career.

“I still work on television shows,” she said, adding that her husband Rich is also a professional actor. “Around eight years ago, things were getting slow with commercials and I wasn’t getting as many. They were also giving less money because they were moving to the internet. This was when I told Rich that I needed to do something else.”

According to Dina, it was at that time she received a DSLR camera as a Christmas present from Rich. Not knowing how to use it initially, she decided to take a class at Unique Photo in Fairfield to get acclimated with it.

“I started to practice with it for the class and started doing headshots for my friends,” she added. “Rich took a look at my work and thought it was actually pretty good so he encouraged me to start my own website.”

After launching her website, a friend needed a hot chocolate stand for her Christmas pictures.

“Rich built for me a hot chocolate stand and that’s when I took my friend’s pictures to put them on Facebook. I asked if anyone would like them and it just blew up,” she explained. “I worked that entire Christmas in my backyard

For the next few years, Dina worked out of her house and taught herself everything, many times watching howto videos on YouTube.

“I call it YouTube University,” she quipped. “If I didn’t know how to do something, I figured it out with a YouTube video by looking it all up. Whatever I needed to learn I taught myself.”

Over time she took more classes and year-after-year kept getting busier as her sets kept getting bigger. She then realized that she needed a bigger space, and after taking a small sublet for a couple of months in another section of town she decided it was time to get a place of her own.

“Debbie, my landlord is amazing and I love Little Falls! The Mayor and council members have been so welcoming

and are so supportive, so I’d like to thank them,” she added. On-hand for the ribbon-cutting was Mayor James Damiano and the Township Council. Damiano commended the opening of the photography studio.

“I’m very happy to have a new type of business in town and this is going to be a great addition to our downtown area,” he said. I wish you nothing but the best and we’re very excited to have you here in town. I hope to see you thrive right here in Little Falls.”

Dina also thanked her family and friends for all their support and everyone for coming to the event.

“I could not have done this without you,” she added. “I’m so grateful to be in Little Falls and I’m so blessed to be here.”

Woodland Park Library at Berkeley College Opens

“The building you are standing in now had undergone extensive renovations and had been reimagined as a hub for student services and a gateway for the community,” said Berkeley College President Diane Recinos, EdD. “Today, the vision comes full circle. Libraries symbolize empowerment, knowledge, and lifelong learning. All ideas that align with our mission.”

Berkeley College welcomed the Alfred Baumann Public Library to its Woodland Park campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Woodland Park Public Library (WPPL) at Berkeley College, as it will be known during its estimated two-year stay, will offer all materials, services, and programming on campus while the Borough embarks on the construction of a new, state-of-the-art library facility.

The "grand partnership" event featured tours of the campus and Library facilities, live music, refreshments, and the kickoff to the WPPL Summer Reading Program.

“This partnership reaffirms our commitment to fostering a culture of learning, discovery, and innovation where minds are nurtured, ideas are exchanged, and futures are shaped,” said Library Director Linda Hoffman. “It is a remarkable chapter in our pursuit to continue to give access to our patrons while we undergo construction.”

The Library is located inside Renaissance Hall on campus, 44 Rifle Camp Rd., on the second floor, with easy access off the main road and ample parking.

Mayor Kazmark's Final Meeting

zmark served at his final Borough Council meeting on June 21, his last before his departure from Borough service on July 9. He assumed the position of Village Manager of Ridgewood on July 10. The Council presented him with a plaque that included the key to Woodland Park in recognition of his dedicated 22 years of service to the community, as well as a proclamation.

The plaque was presented in appreciation for his

tireless work and dedication that has left an indelible mark on the community.

“Under your guidance, our town has grown and prospered,” it read. “We are a better place because of your vision and your hard work. You have set a standard of excellence that will inspire generations to come. We thank you for your selfless service, your leadership, and your unwavering commitment to our community. You have left a lasting legacy and we are proud to honor you for your many years of public service.”

Mayor Kazmark was first elected to public office in 2002 at 23 years of age, the youngest member in the history of Woodland Park’s Council to be elected as a councilman. He served three terms as a councilman. In 2011, he was elected as the mayor and he was reelected in 2014, 2017 and 2020.

What to Look for in a New Grill

KENTUCKY — There’s never a better time than the present to up your grilling game — and your grilling game starts with the barbecue you are using.

Whether you are buying your first backyard grill or looking to replace or upgrade your current grill, there are a few key elements and features you should be looking for when making your decision. Here are some items you should take into consideration when you are searching online or walking down the barbecue aisle at your local distributor, courtesy of Napoleon:

Fuel — The first question to ask is what kind of barbecue you want. A classic charcoal grill? Or will you use propane? If your home is equipped with a natural gas connection outside, a natural gas grill is easy and convenient — you never have to worry about the tank running out while you are in the middle of cooking.

Heat — The whole point of a barbecue is to cook. The hotter the barbecue gets, the better. This is typically measured in BTUs (the short form of British Thermal Unit, the amount of heat required to warm one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit) and the higher the number the better. But there are other factors that can influence how hot your barbecue will get. Air flow has a significant influence on heat; proper ventilation means an even, consistent cooking temperature. Too much and the heat isn’t retained. Not enough and your food may burn.

Size — Know the space where you are going to put the grill, and how many people you are typically going to be cooking for. If you are a single, a couple without kids or

empty nesters, there may not be a need to buy a massive six-burner grill with a two-head cooking system. But if you have a big family and/or you entertain with a big backyard, you want to find a grill with sufficient cooking space.

Materials — The type of metal used in the barbecue — and its quality — will not only determine the durability of the grill, but will also determine its performance. A cast aluminum firebox will heat quickly and help retain heat. Heavy gauge stainless steel is ideal for burners that will last, and a stainless steel hood will help retain heat.

Features — Today’s barbecues are more than a grill over flame. Infrared side burners bring a new dimension to searing meat and locking in flavours. Back rotisserie burners bathe your food in even heat as it rotates on the spit. Smoker tubes give you the flexibility to add new flavours to

your dishes. Lighting makes grilling after dark an easier task. Charcoal trays make your gas gill truly versatile, giving you the option to cook over charcoal — and all the flavours that come with that.

Assurance — Check the warranty that comes with the grill. What does it cover, or perhaps more importantly, what doesn’t it cover? A lifetime warranty on burners isn’t very helpful if the firebox rusts away to nothing, or the cooking grids crumble into dust. Concert in the Park Series Kicks-Off For Fun Summer Evenings in Little Falls

The Concert in the Park series is in full swing.

The concerts are held at Memorial Park at the corner of Main Street and Wilmore Road .

The Little Falls Alliance for a Better Community (LF ABC) is celebrating its 22nd year and the 16th marketplace season with a host of musical acts and that will run on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, throughout the summer months.

RB Express was featured on July 6 performing oldies music, including many DoWop era favorites. “Downtown,” “Dance with Me Tonight,” “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Runaround Sue” were some of the hits the band covered that livened up the audience and had some attendees getting up to dance.

The following acts scheduled to perform for the remainder of the summer are:

- A journey to the early days of rock n’ roll.. all the way to the 70’s

The Little Falls Boy Scouts Troop 14 will also be on hand to sell hot dogs and sausages. Vendors selling handmade accessories,

clothing, paintings, jewelry, and lotions are also among the vendors participating, New vendors are always welcome. There is also a 50/50 Raffle every Thursday!

Rod Visser of Wayne came by to attend the concert with his friend Brian Kowalchuk, a Little Falls resident.

“I really enjoy coming to the concerts each year during the summer,” he said. “They always have great acts and you spend a nice evening outside.”

Little Falls Annual 4th of July Street Fair Enjoyed by Attendees

Attendees filled the streets during the annual Little Falls 4th of July Street Fair to enjoy items from retail vendors and great food.

The event also included activities for the kids such as face painting, games, as well as other entertainment and attractions. It also gave kids to a chance to visit with members of the Little Falls Police Department (LFPD), Little Falls Fire Department (LFFD) and Little Falls EMS, and checkout their vehicles and equipment.

Local businesses showcased their shops and offered specials to those passing by. The annual event is sponsored by the Little Falls Police Benevolent Association (PBA) 346 and was set up along Main Street with over 80 vendors. Attendees walked along several blocks to enjoy a fun, summer day, and check out the merchan-

dise and food being offered by vendors. Tent exhibits highlighted craft vendors, services, including a variety of food and refreshment trucks.

Mayor James Damiano, along with Council President Anthony Sgobba, Councilman Chris Vancheri, Councilwoman Christine Hablitz, Councilman Michael Murphy, Councilwoman Jayna Patel, were on-hand to greet attendees. Members of the Little Falls Police Department and Little Falls PBA 346 also greeted those passing by.

According to PBA President Kevin Sayad, this year’s attendance topped last year’s attendance and said the event was very successful.

“Despite the brutally hot and muggy weather, attendees still came out in droves and we had double the amount of vendors compared to last year’s amount

of 40 so it was way bigger than last summer,” he said. “I thought the temperature would keep people from coming but it didn’t and I was very surprised and happy with the turnout.”

Also featured at the event was Sayad’s brother, Dr. Michael Sayad, who recently joined the Foot and Ankle Center of New Jersey, located at 96 E. Main Street, as a podiatrist and foot surgeon.

“My brother works for the center and it was nice to have his tent set up next to the PBA tent,” Sayad explained. “We’re both from this town and we love it here. I’ll be bringing him to other PBA events coming up this year.”

Some other vendors featured at the event were that the PBA wish to acknowledge are Kona Ice, Cousins Maine Lobster, Pickle Me, The Mozzarella God, Messy Fancy Funnels, and Spread the Health. Craft vendors

were also featured.

“Kona Ice seemed to be the busiest because it was a great way for attendees to cool off on a hot day like that with some shaved, flavored ice so it was a big hit,” he added.

Emergency trucks and vehicles from the LFPD, LFFD, Little Falls EMS and the DPW were also on exhibit for kids to have an opportunity to inspect and touch all the vehicles’ gadgets. The LFFD opened up the fire hydrants to cool down the crowd with mist and sprinklers.

“We appreciate all of our first responders coming by and setting up just off Main Street to host a visit from children, including the LFFD cooling everyone off in a splash zone,” he explained.

Sayad also wished to thank We’re All Tied Up for coordinating the event.

“We partner with them to help us run these events and we appreciate it,” he noted.

Little Falls Public Library Kicks-Off Summer Reading With Carnival Fun

The Little Fall Public Library welcomed summer with a bang during its first-ever Summer Reading Program Kick-Off Carnival on June 17.

The celebration featured bounce houses, cornhole, Giant Jenga, Giant Connect-Four, axe-throwing, crafts, and even button-making! Refreshments and ice cream were also served, including hot dogs for a donation to the local Boys Scouts Troop 14.

On-hand for the festivities was Mayor James Damiano, Councilman Chris Vancheri, Councilwoman Christine Hablitz, Councilman Mike Murphy, Councilwoman Jayna Patel and Library Board President Anne Kahwaty. The library’s staff was also on-hand consisting of Jennifer Cole, Library Director; Michelle Jordan, Adult Services; Linda Belen, Youth Services; Joseph DeCesare, Circulation and Digital Services and Matthew Hardy, Community Outreach and Marketing Coordinator.

With this year’s library theme of “All Together Now,” attendees also gathered to enjoy some face-painting and add their names to a cut-out of their hand to add to the “hand leaf tree” inside the library’s children section. The tree signifies unity within the community.

Cole said that the entire library staff was thrilled to see the turnout for the Summer Reading Kick-Off Carnival.

“It was great to see so many people signing up for the summer reading and enjoying the festivities,” said Cole, adding that she and the entire library staff are thankful for the continued support of the library’s patrons, the Little Falls Library Board of Trustees, the Little Falls Police Department, the Little Falls Department of Public Works and the Little Falls Township Council.

Councilwoman Hablitz also commented on the library’s initiatives.

“I am so proud to see all these events coming to fruition for the library,” she said. “Jennifer Cole, our library director, and her staff, have done amazing things.”

Tracy Kallert was sworn in as Acting Mayor on July 9, following the resignation of Mayor Keith Kazmark, who has vacated his roles as both Borough Administrator and Mayor to take a position as Village Manager in Ridgewood.

Kazmark was first elected to public office in 2002 at 23 years old and served three terms as a councilman. In 2011, he was elected as the mayor and he was reelected in 2014, 2017 and 2020.

Acting Mayor Kallert will

seek a full three-year term as Mayor in November. As a lifelong Woodland Park resident, Kallert has been a member of the Borough Council for 11 years, serving as Council President in 2015, 2020, and 2023. She has also served on the zoning board and flood board.

Acting Mayor Kallert after taking the oath and being presented with the gavel by Kazmark, former Mayor Pat Lepore, and former Mayor Gary Colletti, noted that she does not take the position lightly.

“I'm excited. I'm nervous.

I'm everything I should be feeling to keep myself in check and to make sure every morning I wake up and realize the responsibility I have to the 14,000 people who are now trusting me to deliver a finer life for them,” she said. “Woodland Park has been there for me, and I plan on leaving my mark just as Woodland Park has always left the stamp on my heart.”

When you are experiencing pain, a good thing to do is look down to see if your feet look the same. Is there swelling, redness, both, or something else that is different about one foot?

Having a good one to compare the bad one too does make it easier for us to make an accurate diagnosis. It’s also easier for you to determine whether you should be concerned.

A common condition that happens just below the ankle often makes one foot look different than the other. Sometimes the appearance is subtle and sometimes it’s quite obvious.

The affected foot often has swelling and sometimes redness.

To see it best, looking down while you are standing gives you the best picture.

Pain and swelling in this area is a sign of a common form of tendinitis.

This condition usually occurs without an injury. Women who are over 40 years of age are more prone to it than males.

People with flat feet typically are the most prone. There is a simple test you can do at home that indicates whether this tendon is the culprit. It would be best to hold onto the wall or something while doing it.

Start with keeping 1 foot on the floor and the other raised just off the floor.

Try to go up on your tiptoes on the foot that’s on the floor.

If this is no problem for you, then the tendon isn’t affected. Switch to having the other foot on the floor and the opposite raised, and then try to go up on your tiptoes again. It’s a classic sign of this major tendon being a problem when the affected foot can’t raise up onto the toes. When there is pain and swelling caused by this form of tendinitis, ICE, rest, better shoes, anti-inflammatories, and physical therapy will have a minimal affect. The longer this condition exists the higher, the risk of the tendon tearing.

Tri-Town Fishing Derby

The Borough of Woodland Park, Township of Little Falls, and Borough of Totowa recently held the annual tritown fishing derby at Henderson Pond at Zaccaria Park. Over 40 families took part.

Great Falls Bassmasters President Antonio “Go Go” Gomez's team was on hand to measure the fish caught and help the children out. During the three-hour fishing window, when a child would catch a fish they would bring it to the pavilion to be measured and logged. Following the serving of refreshments, prizes were awarded in three age groups to those who caught the most fish and those who caught the biggest fish.

The most fish caught during the event was 10. The smallest fish caught was 4 inches and biggest fish caught was 12.5 inches.

Two recent Passaic Valley High School graduates, Michael Post and Nathan Stone, were recently honored for their accomplishments at the Township Council Workshop Meeting on June 12.

Two recent Passaic Valley High School (PVHS) graduates were acknowledged for their accomplishments at the Township Council Workshop Meeting on June 12. Michael Post and Nathan Stone each received recognition from Mayor James Damiano and the Township Council.

Post is a recent graduate from PVHS and is set to begin eight weeks of basic training in San Antonio, TX. He will then take part in technical training and advanced fighter

aircraft integrated avionics at Sheppard Air Force, located in Wichita Falls, TX, and will eventually be stationed at the 177th Fighter Wing and National Guard Base.

Post plans to serve in the Air National Guard for the next eight years while working towards his higher education.

Stone attended all three schools in the Little Falls School District as a youngster and was involved in the Little Falls Athletic Club (LFAC), participating in baseball and soccer programs, as well as traveling club soccer

teams. He recently graduated PVHS with honors as a superintendent’s ambassador, and as a top athlete on the high school’s track team. He volunteered in the community while working part-time, including the American Legion Post 108. He also his received his Eagle Scout award upon the recent completion of his project, which entailed the shelving construction for organizing and storing baseball, softball and soccer equipment at the LFAC, making it much easier for coaches and players to access items throughout the season.

Stone will attend Montclair State Univer-

sity in the fall and plans to study business finance, with a concentration in entrepreneurship.

Mayor Damiano congratulated Post and Stone during the meeting, adding that both have demonstrated “outstanding dedication, talent, and community spirit.”

“We are proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing their continued contributions to Little Falls,” he further added. “Congratulations to both Michael and Nathan on everything they have accomplished!”

New Palestinian Restaurant ‘The Olive Bistro’ Opens in Little Falls

It was then they decided early on that they would eventually make all the recipes of those delicious Palestinian dishes they love so much so that others can enjoy them as well..

“We’ve been in the business now for over 20 years and we first started off with catering, so we ran catering halls together,” said Anwar. “When the pandemic first hit, we went into cloud kitchens and we always said that we’d work to get our own place. Everyone loves our food and kept telling us that we should open our own restaurant.”

Osama said he was very excited to own the restaurant alongside his brother.

“I’m very happy and look-

ing forward to others enjoying our authentic cuisine as we always have,” he said.

“My brother and I came over to this location to sign the deal and now it’s a reality. This is a true Palestinian restaurant with our parents’ and grandparents’ recipes.”

A ribbon-cutting grand opening ceremony was held for The Olive Bistro on March 20. Mayor James Damiano and council members gathered at the restaurant to celebrate with the Mansour brothers, along with their families.

Also on-hand for the celebration was the brothers’ father Mustafa, who said one of the crowd favorite dishes

that his sons make is the Makluba dish, also known as a “flipped pot,” consisting of stewed meat of chicken or lamb, rice and fried vegetables, that are placed in a pot. The pot is then flipped upside down onto a serving dish to make a tower of flavor.

“I’m very happy for them and look forward to seeing them thrive in their restaurant,” he said.

Damiano said the addition of the Olive Bistro to Little Falls is extremely exciting.

“I’m looking forward to having some Palestinian cuisine here in town,” he added.

romas are bundles of nerve tissue growth in your feet. These benign growths typically develop on the ball of your foot, between the third and fourth toes.

Neuromas usually feel like you're standing or walking on a small rock, or as if your sock’s wadded under the ball of your foot. You may also experience burning, stinging, or numbness
